MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
just about set to go. And today on the hill, Mel Kelly and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Tap foul at the plate. And now the one swinging a foul back that’s out of play. [Applause] And that skips in the dirt. and misses inside. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. And it remains two and two. Breaking ball misses down and away. Strike him out. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. It’s a strike out, but they’ll be in good shape if they make their outs as difficult as that one. Those grinding abs take a toll on the pitch as the game goes on. Ivon Herrera batting with one down takes a strike. Kelly, he gets a lot of swing and miss and he keeps the ball in the yard. Not to mention the fact not too many hits either. Lifted in the air right center field. Carol moves towards it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out to right. Here’s a Cardinal lineup now, Singy. This lineup has the benefit of playing behind a great pitching stat. They’ve got a really low ERA. Yeah. And you know, with that said, there’s not as much pressure on the offense, but make no mistake about it, players want to hit the ball hard and they want to score runs. They want to jog around the bases hitting the ball over the fence. So, regardless of how dominant the staff can be, the attitude is we want to go out there and have some fun with the bats. So, we’ll see. One big inning in this one, you know, could be all they need, but you’d like to have multiple big innings. Alec Burlson stands in now and watches strike one. Check swing. Did he go? No, he didn’t. Even some of the best guys in the sport are going to give up home runs from time to time, and he’s an exception. Yeah. And even with those home runs, if you’re throwing strikes and keeping base runners off the paths, then those home runs are solo shots. But to this point, he hasn’t had to worry about it. Struck and out looking with the off speed stuff. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. And now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Chase Field on the mound for this one. Steven Mats, what should we keep an eye on here? Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. RA in the low threes very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. We go to the bottom of the first and now the right fielder Corbin Carroll trying to bunt his way on and save. He busted it down the line for that infield single. This is a big part of his skill set and he puts himself into situations where he can rely on his speed to impact the ball game. And this is just another example of it. And we’ll see what else he can do now that he’s on first. And here is Jake McCarthy. Come on. Safe and second. And that was not close. I think that steel kind of sets the tone not just for this game but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back runner at second. Nobody out. That’s inside. One and two to count. Here’s a player known for playing better in day games, which is not always the case. I mean, day games are different, boo. Things change from game times to your daily routine, but he sure makes the transition look easy. Well, they clearly didn’t recognize that curve ball out of the hand and tried to check the swing. Just went around too far and you’re hoping the umpire maybe missed it and they bail you out. At the plate, Haldo Peromo and that’s outside. One ball go straight. [Applause] turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline out to short. win. Fires over to first and they got him. Betty for first base. Time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup. And the challenge for this lineup today, Singy finding a way to have success against the sinker ball. Yeah, it’s a tough pitch to hit Boo and even harder to elevate. Got to set your sights a little bit higher when you’re at the dish. They’re struggling with it. I’d expect them to make some type of adjustment. It won’t take long to see how well that sinker is working today. Chopper to second and that chance handled to first. Third out and that ends the frame. One left for Arizona. Scoreless after one. Back here in the desert, top of the second and stepping in for the Cardinals, Wilson Contrus. Inside one and 0. [Music] That one missed. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire. And out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. Right through there for a strike. Nasty 20 slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. And a foul ball. [Applause] Liner picked on the hop at first and very nicely done for the out. Batting fifth, third baseman Thomas Saji. Thomas Sajayzy next up for the Cardinals. And that drops in for a strike. Swinging a highfly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance and one hops the wall and he starts his afternoon off right with a double. He was all over that one. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. One out, runner at second. Mason Win now at the plate. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. A short stop takes the ball. S Jay-Z the runner at second with one away. Outside two balls, no strikes. Larry Bullard, our umpire behind the plate. Boo. Bullard’s got a pretty standard strike zone. Sometimes they’ll have you guessing a little bit, but overall well respected umpire in the league. And that misses and now 3 and 0. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitters got to hit to his strength. So, you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four guys nicknames. Now, this ball is down and could score a run. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Batting seven left. Show a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Jos Fairmine next up for the Cardinals. Slice the other way and foul. First and third, one down. [Applause] and fouled off [Applause] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two on, one out. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Next pitch. Not close. Up high. [Applause] upstairs [Music] [Applause] in the dirt. It gets to the back stop. Win up to second. Runner at third. Hold. So, both runners are now in scoring position. Got to take advantage of this opportunity now because of the wild pitch. They’ve got two runners in scoring position. Good time for the hitter to lock in. Put the ball in play hard somewhere. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. He fouls it off. Will do it again. [Applause] Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Thomas sizing it up. He’s got it. Runner attacks from third and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead. That’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough and that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. Pedro Pah getting ready to hit. [Applause] And ball one. [Music] [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] Swang in a line drive, slicing into right field. That’s a hit. The run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. The batter now, Victor Scott hit in the air, left field. Guriel handles the chance. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Cardinals two and the Diamondbacks nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Suarez up to hit now. Baseio Suarez. [Applause] That’s in there. Going one. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Next offering is in for a strike. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. [Applause] [Music] That one missing inside. One and two. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. And he deals two and a swing and a miss. And now one away. Batting six left. Here’s Guriel. Lordes Guriel Junior. Right down to shoot. That’s strike one. just off the inside edge. [Music] And there’s a foul ball. that one the other way. Makes the grab for the second out. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Alec Thomas now Let’s get it going. Off the plate. And that’s ball one. And a foul ball. Two outs on the ground to third. [Music] zips it across. Three up, three down. Inning over. Offense held in check there. We play two full. It’s the Cardinals two. And the Diamondbacks nothing. And we’re back. Now it’s the second base, Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. Donovan hitting leadoff in today’s game. and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2018. Fouled off left side. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. Oh, and two [Applause] that misses the zone. Going to count one and two. One ball, two strikes, and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. That K is his third of the game. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. [Music] And one swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Lifted in the air right field. Carol calls it in. Two away. Now batting right fielder Alec Berles. Two outs. Space is empty. Now it’s the right fielder Alec Burlson. Toss to Naylor. That’s out number three. Redbirds down quietly as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. Back here at Chasefield set for the bottom of the third. Digging in Bla1 Alexander. Blaze Alexander. Mats back to work. That one hooked. Foul way out front for strike two. Oh, this can be kind of frustrating for the hitting coach right now. This lineup seems to be swinging at everything. And now one and two. One and two. [Applause] To third and it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he starts the bottom of the third with a double. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks on the ground right side. Over to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. It’s early, but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score. exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. [Music] [Applause] Carol batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Alexander stands at third with one gone in the inning. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Winner from third comes across. It’s an RBI single and they trail by one. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jake McCarthy went down on strikes his first time through. Swings through that one for strike one. One strike. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. Runner on the move. Pitch misses. Save. That’s a score base. man at second. Runner on the go again. Swing and a miss. And the throw is at third. Well, I can see you had a big lead out there at second base, so it wasn’t a shock when he took off, but trying to steal third right there. It’s kind of risky, man. You’re already in scoring position, so you got to make sure that you could make it there safely. That wasn’t the case. just misses there. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Slow roller to first the flip and he gets him. Nicely done. But the RBI single pushes across a run and it’s now a two-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. Start of the 40 now of the Cardinals number four hitter Wilson Contras. That’s out to center field. Thomas makes the grab. One pitch and one out. Now batting third baseman Thomas Saji. And up next for St. Lewis Thomas Sajay-Z doubled in his first AB foul ball there. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Foul ball still 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Just off the outside edge and count one and two. just misses the mark outside the zone. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. [Applause] Pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there’s two away. Now batting short stop down base is empty. Mason win next up for the Cardinals. Singled and scored his first time. Just missed. Two outs. Base is empty. Little bit low. Two and 0. Swinging a foul out of play. Two down. Dolman on. Fouls one off. Two and two. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. One, two, three go to Cardinals. They lead it 2-1. back here in the desert stepping in as the switch hit shortstop. Heraldo Pomo Heraldo Permo just missed. You know, these Dbacks as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. Ball to strike the pitch. Out in front. Rip foul. hit on the ground to the right side. Contras steps on the bag. One up, one down. Now batting the first baseman, Josh Naylor. Here’s Josh Naylor grounded out his first time. And that’s in the dirt. Home team down a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And now two and0 strike on the ground to first and it goes just foul. One down, base is empty. [Applause] probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Outside low and the count’s full [Applause] the other way. This one could be trouble around first. Digging for two. Not in time. It’s a double. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. [Applause] One out, runner at second. Auheno Suarez up to the plate now. Just missed. One ball, go straight. man at second. That’s to third. Tosses to first and there’s two away. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. 0 for one so far. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Maybe a surprise here as the bullpen is already stirring. Sunny Gray up and throwing. Liberator, a lefthander also throwing. Naylor on at second with two down. [Applause] And that is out of play. [Applause] Got him looking. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. New inning getting started now for St. Louis. Jose and the slider just misses. That one misses and the count is two and0. Right through there for a strike and that skips into there. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here on the corner for a strike. And now it’s three and two. [Applause] Keeps the attack going with a foul ball. This one in the air right field. Carol puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah RBI single his last time up. hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit and they have their first hit since the second inning. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Could get in the air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. And now Victor Scott bunting for a hit. Naylor offbalance feed. There’s one, but no throw to first as he’ll hold on to it. Now that is second baseman Brendan Donovan. So the lineup flips over and here’s the St. Louis leadoff man Brendan Donovan for two in this one. Kelly moved to first and he’s back in safely. And that’s in there at the knees. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. And that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point. Two outs. Foul ball. [Music] That’s a ball. [Music] Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. gets a piece and stays alive. You got this. And he chases that one. Now five strikeouts for him on the M. So one left for the Cardinals as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shelby with my buddy Chris Singleton. Set to get us started. Bottom five, Alec Thomas. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One and0. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. That’s above [Music] comebacker to the mound and it’s the room for a hit. Off to a good start for the lead off DN. Well, that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over. Tying on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. No outs. Runner at first. Next to hit, Bla1 Alexander one for one with a double and a run score. Little chopper rolls foul. Rudder at first with no outs here. [Applause] The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. And that’s through there for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Two balls in the dirt. Blocked. And the runner stays where he is. [Applause] And that’s downstairs. Three balls, two shots. Way to lay off that pitch down. Hard hit down the line and left. Should be extra bases. Lead runner touches second. Headed for third. Coming home now. A relay to the plate. Save. We are tied at two. Well, he gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. A now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Steven Matz is done and a decent effort considering he’s normally a reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. Now pitching for they turn things over to the southpaw. Matthew Liberator. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. And now the switch in catcher Jose Herrera 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Fouled off. He was late. man at second. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Applause] Strike three on the fast ball and that ran back over the inner half. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the play today. This is Corbin Carroll. There’s the strike. [Music] Yeah, that’s fouled off. That one not close. Yeah, the count one and two. Rarely will you see a pitcher just waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Foul ball still a one and two count. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Now the number two hitter, Jake McCarthy. And that one fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Oh, one. popped up to the left into foul ground, makes the grab and that will end the inning. Dex with a runscoring double and we’re deadlocked now at two a piece. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. All set for the top of the sixth. Here’s the Cardinal DH. Ivon Herrera Kelly back to work. Right side. Carol moving under it. Brings it in. And there’s one down. Now that right fielder Alec Burles. Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. Burlson in his third season, 26 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020. That one’s in there 0 and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. John Curtis up and throwing for manager Tory Lavell. DFani warming up as well. Missed with a change up and the count even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. All tied up and we’re in the top half of the sixth. Next offering upstairs. Wow, that’s a tough pitch to lay off. One down. Base is empty. Sea strikes him out for the second time today. Well, that was the cutter down and in right there. And typically, if you’re going to have a chance with the pitch, if it’s down, that’s your best chance of doing anything with it. It’s kind of like a mini slider, just with a little less vertical movement. But still, that one tied him up and he couldn’t get the barrel to it. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. [Music] misses inside and it’s one and0. One ball, no strikes [Music] and it’s fouled away. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. fouls it off. Still one and two. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Not close with that one. The countdown now two and two. And there’s a ball. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Due next in the air out to center. A dive and he can’t haul it in. Up next for the Cardinals, manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Mel Kelly won’t go any further and a nice effort out of him, no doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. Now pitching ready out of the pen, Jake Woodford. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. Go ahead run on base to Jay-Z. Digs in now. One for two. And a popup right side. Foul territory. And a foul ball the 01 and that one upstairs. Ball one. Contraras the runner at first with two gone. And that’s outside. and foul ball. Two outs on the ground of first and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. Nice work from the snake pen there. Hard in the order. 345 coming up. We are tied 2-2. And we’re back now. It’s the shortstop. Heraldo Peromo. That one drifts inside. Well, these Diamondbacks digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. And that one lifted in the air center field. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting first baseman Josh. And now it’s Josh Naylor. [Applause] A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. fought off foul. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Swaying in a ball popped in the air and it’s fouled. That one outside and the count is one and two. [Applause] fights it off. He’ll see another fights that one away. Still one and two. And that one upstairs about to see the 11th pitch of the at bat here. That one the other way. Slides for the stop. Gathers and throws. It’s there. And that’s a great play. Well, Boo, as an infielder, you have to be ready for anything. In that spot, it required going to the ground, getting a little dirty, and making a strong throw for the out. Great play. Now, up next for Arizona, Au Heno Suarez. There’s the strike. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Has room and he makes the catch. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. Score remains 2-2. Back here at Chasefield. And now the short stop. Mason win. Mason win. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. You know, these Cardinals just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Toss to Naylor. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Now batting left fielder Jose Fine. Jose Fermine the next to hit. Just missed. And there’s a foul ball. And that drops in for a strike. And that’s in the dirt. [Music] [Applause] That misses the zone. Full count. Three and two. got him looking. That was pretty nasty. And up next for St. Louis, Pedro. [Applause] Just missed. One and0. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. And he hits a ground ball right side and that’s just fouled. In the air to left down the line. Guriel sizes this one up and makes the play and that’s out number three. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Now pitching for John King takes over on the mound. Oh, I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team. And there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad Guriel Jun. Guriel in the box now. No balls in a strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Oh. [Applause] A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. Yeah, that skips in the dirt. Real two strike. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Pulled the string on the change up. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him. Here’s the center fielder, Alec Thomas. Swing and a chopper out to short. Sends it across to first and that quickly. Two away. Now batting second baseman Blaze Alexander. Bla1 Alexander. Fouled off down the right side. Clips the outside corner and it’s nothing in two. swinging a ground ball, fires across the diamond and Arizona is set down one, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona and this game is still tied at two and two. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. John Curtis now pitching He’s been so good against lefties. Number 46, John Curtis. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. This guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths, swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Applause] out to short Pomo. Fires to first and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Here’s the second baseman Brendan Donovan 0 for three with three strikeouts. [Applause] at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Kevin Ginkle, the closer is getting loose. [Applause] Not even close there. And the count is one and one. [Applause] Slashed foul down the right side and a hook off into the seats. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. I really think the outer half is open. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Guriel brings it in. Two down. now batting. And now it’s Ivon Herrera for three with three flyyous [Applause] and fires in a fast ball at 95. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. swaying at a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. Fast ball off the plate a little bit, but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. Go ahead run on base. Alec Burlson now at the plate. Pitch misses. Ball one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Next offering in there for a strike and the count one and one. That one missed. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. And that one fouled off and down. Move to first. Here back on a dive. Two gone. the possible go ahead run at first and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. [Applause] Swing in a liner. Base hit out into right center field. Runner around third. The throws offline. He’s saved. It’s 32. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into a cal, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Here comes Wilson Contreras. One for three. [Applause] Ball one there. Burlson at second with two down. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Next offering way upstairs. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. [Applause] [Applause] Man on second, two down. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Guriel handles the chance. Cards on the board with this double. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in the desert ready for the bottom of the eighth leading off Jose Herrera. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Check swing, but it’s put in play. Contraras, he steps on the bag. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. Next to hit for Arizona, Corbin Carroll. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. That clips a corner. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Ryan Hley, the closer getting cranked up for a possible save opportunity. holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that one is inside. [Applause] That’s a hit. And the tying run is on base. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. John King done for the afternoon. And he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Sunny Gray on for his 20th appearance of the year. Jake McCarthy getting ready to hit. 0 for three in this one. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. [Music] [Applause] Runner on the go. Pitch misses in and that’s a stolen base. Not even close. And now he’s up to three stolen bases in the game. Well, it seems like 90 ft is such a big deal in a tight one-run game like this one. Maybe it’s a little bit risky, but they felt good about it and it paid off. Let’s see if they can turn this into a big run. So, the tying run at second on the ground right side. Takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks. Partner, next up for the Diamondbacks, Heraldo Peromo. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth. Holding on to this narrow lead. This is exactly what they were looking for. [Applause] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Going chew now. One and two. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. The tying run is 90 ft away. [Applause] High-fly ball out into left center field. Fine grabs it on the run. Oh, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Anthony Dclani and he’s had a struggle so far this year as you can see the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Now up for St. Louis Thomas Saji [Applause] swing and a miss as he was late that time. Action in the pen down there. Number 43 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Graveman also throwing [Applause] and a popup on the left side of the infield. Suarez. He’s there. He’s got it. One down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. So digging in, Mason Winfani, a 6’2 righty, 34y old vet, and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2011. There’s the strike, [Applause] slapped foul. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Soft contact in the air and a base hit. Now batting left fielder Jose Fine. One down. And up next for St. Louis, Jose Fairine. The tag and he’s out. batting catcher Pedro. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah. [Applause] Just missed. And another ball and one-run game here in the top of the ninth. Next offering is in for a strike. And that’s a little bit high. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Victor Scott up next for the Cardinals. fouls one away and now three and two. [Applause] Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Win around third now. A long throw home, but it’s offline and they lead by two. Comes through with the RBI. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] That’s down and in. Just missed with a good breaking ball in. Looking for that hitter to chase and perhaps get some weak contact or swing and miss. Good job on both sides. [Applause] Fly ball center field. Thomas gets under it and he makes the catch and that’ll do it. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now 42. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Ryan Hley. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. [Applause] Naylor in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. And the one that one fouled off. Hey, look, we’ll see how it factors in. I just can’t emphasize how much that insurance run in the top of the ninth means. I mean, just such a big difference mentally when you’re chasing two runs instead of one. Swing and a highf fly ball. Well, that’s back there. And that one is out of here. He leaves the yard to right. his 12th of the season. It’s 43. That’s a great way to fire up this crowd. They’re feeling it now. Most times it’s the pitcher looking at the scoreboard for velocity, but in this case it’s the hitter. He just turned around triple digits at the dish. I don’t even know how he saw that pitch. Maybe he didn’t, but he got a home run out of it. Next to hit, Au Heno Suarez. That one in triple digits. A onun lead. And the home team trying to pull it out. just off the inside edge. Just missed with that good fast ball inside, but it plants a seed in the hitter’s mind. He’s got to be ready for that pitch, which will open up the outside part of the plate. [Applause] Swing and a miss. That is strike two. One ball, two strike. [Music] looking to get the tying run on base. Slider misses outside and a swing and a miss. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Well, we see it a lot more these days than we ever did when I played, but a slider in the 90s still catches your attention even if you’re sitting on the pitch. Good luck recognizing that tight spin and adjusting to the late break. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. There’s the strike. trying to close out a one-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And that drops in for a strike. swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt onto first. Got him. Two gone after the strike out. You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach. And that’s a great example why right there. If he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits, he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt. on the other side. Still a nice two- strike pitch though. So they’re down to their final out. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that is out of play. [Applause] [Music] The D-Max down to their final strike. popped up. Foul territory behind the plate. He’s got it. Ball game. And the Cardinals hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, you take a tie ball game into the ninth on the road. You know that you’ve got some work to do. You got to score, but then you’ve also got to get three outs in the bottom half of that inning. They did just that today. Very well played ball game. Get this win on the road. Everybody’s happy with the W. Double move.
