MLB LIVE🔴 Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago White Sox – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
So, just about set now and our pitcher tonight, Mike Burroughs. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. [Applause] Fouled off. He was late. First pitch 640 [Music] pitch misses at one and one. That’s inside. That’s inside. [Applause] Swing and a chopper out to short. Not in time. An infield knock to start the inning. Batting second, the designated hitter. Now the number two hitter, Chase Maid. Counts one and squirts away a little bit. Tacman aboard here at first with nobody out. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Get that’s a strike and it’s one and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Applause] [Music] puts it in the air out towards left center. Gonzalez snags it on the run. At the lineup, one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, Andrew Benendi. And Boo, he’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. Andrew Benendi batting with one down. Takes a strike. And ball one. to first. Might be two. There’s one. Not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. And here is Sosa to the plate. Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average, but one of the things in today’s game, the value in the fact that he hits both righties and lefties. Swinging a foul out of play. Two outs. That one misses and that’s ball one. They’re so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris. And it’s huge when you don’t have to sit a guy or platoon him when you can hit, you know, both sides in terms of pitcher arms. You’re a guy that it’s hard to take out of the lineup. And I think it’s very important today when everything is under the microscope on the ground to the left. You know, two out errors are kind of like two out walks and sometimes even worse. You know, you think you’re out of the inning, but all of a sudden you got another out to get and the offense has a great opportunity. they’re looking to take advantage of and make you pay for. First and second, two outs. Kyle Teal steps to the plate for the White Socks. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Come on, you can do it. Two on, two outs. And that one upstairs. That one fouled off. two in the dirt to third. Tag got him. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. So, one left for the White Socks. And now the Pirates will get their first opportunity. No score. Back after this on the show. Back here in Pittsburgh. And getting the nod for the White Socks. Shawn Burke and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Spencer Horowitz, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Music] That missed by a lot and the count is 2 and 0. Spencer swings and sends a rocket to right. Robertson makes the catch. One away. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Krian Hayes. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. [Music] Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. And down on strikes and there are two outs. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. Reynolds. Two out. Space is empty. Brian Reynolds here. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. To the right side. Sosa tosses to first and the Pirates go one, two, three. Bucks go down quietly. scoreless after one. All set for the start of the inning. And now Kyle Teal. Kyle Teal. Burrows back to work. And there’s the strike. [Applause] And that’s him for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Breaking ball misses down and away. One ball, two strikes out. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Luis Robert now. Pitch misses inside and it’s one and0. [Applause] One out. Base is empty. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. jump throw across his body and they get the out. Batting seventh, short stop. Coulson Montgomery. Two down, base is empty. Coulson Montgomery the next to hit. And that one off the outside edge. ball that’s out. Pitch misses there and it’s three and0. Carl, I would expect in this three-0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. That’s ball four. tried another fast ball but missed the spot. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Josh Rohox in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Second inning here. No score. off the mark there and it’s a ball and a strike. Come on, Pirates. And that one clips the corner. Hayes. They take the force out. Out number three. The White Socks leave one. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. And stepping in is the speedy Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. Ground ball left side. A dive. Nice stop to first. Got him. Nice play. That is fifth designated hitter. My goodness, Singy. That was a great diving stop and maybe even a better throw. Yeah, this out is all about athleticism. I mean, this guy did a great job knocking it down on the dive, but he doesn’t get the out without the cannon of a throw. That was just impressive all around. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. And there’s the ball. [Music] One down. Base is empty. Lifted in the air down the left side. Benitendi hustling after it. He’s got it out number two. Off to a great start. He’s really cruising out there on the mound. He’s got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches. That could set him up to go deep into this game. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. Let’s go Pirates. Come on Pirates. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] Had a breaking ball. Misses outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Let’s win. Come on. Yeah. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Two down. Doon swinging a high-fly ball. Pulled foul. And that’s out of play. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. We’ll move to the third with no score. Well, here we go. Top of the third, scoreless game. And now Will Robertson. Come on, Pirate. A dive. He’s got it from his backside on the money. Nice play. Cadillac reflexes on that one. Makes the dive. Has to get up. Clean exchange to throw a strike across the diamond. And what a tremendous play. Here’s Mike Tacman. Reached on an infield single his first time. That’s too low. And that is ball one. Tacman getting to start at first, hitting lead off in today’s game. And he was a 10th round pick back in 2013. One down, base is empty. Top of the third, no score. misses the zone and he gets him to chase. One ball, two strikes. That one way inside [Applause] [Music] and it remains two and two. struck him out swinging. Pulled the string of the change up. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Chase Maid now at the plate. First pitch swinging. 0 and one. Swings through that. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. And down on strikes he goes. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Down in order go the White Socks. And we are still scoreless. As we go to the last of the third and now the center fielder, Jack Sinski. Sinski. And a foul ball. That’s in there and it’s nothing in two. Hit in the air right field. That one way back there. And that is way gone. His second homer of this series. And that gives him a lead. It’s one nothing. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. [Applause] No matter how this outing ends, that pitch is going to haunt him for a while. An O2 mistake. That’s supposed to be a pitch out of his own. He left it in the spot that the hitter could do some damage with. And that’s exactly what he did. Here’s Julie Bart now. Not even close there. Ball one. [Applause] just missed. Burke maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get cussed up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. [Applause] pitch is in there and the count is three and one. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Swing and that ball smashed down the line. Makes the grab. One away. Batty Knight the short stop. Here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. [Applause] That’s in there. Strike one. The shorts stop takes a ball. [Applause] Pulls that one foul. [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Coritz stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. [Applause] There’s a swing and a drive. That’s back. Makes the catch, gliding onto the warning track. Cannonball coming. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark onto the fourth and attending up here. Boo. One really cool moment I remember at PNC Park is the 2006 home run derby during Allstar weekend. David Ortiz and Ryan Howard each hit homers into the Alagany River on the fly. Really awesome to watch. And there’s a strike to the outside corner. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. So up next for Chicago, Lenny Sosa 0 for one. He into a fieldielder’s choice his first time. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. A one down. And that one lifted in the air center field. Sinsky settles underneath it. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting catcher Kyle Teal. And here’s the catcher Kyle Teal. Struck out swinging his first time. That one outside and that’s ball one. White Socks down a run. that misses. And that’s ball two. And another ball and he walked him. Take your base. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. So, a man aboard and up next for Chicago, Luis Robert Jr. grounded out his first time up. And that one upstairs. Ball one. That clips the corner. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it broken back as you jog back to the dugout. This one in the air. Conor Faleppa. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. So, one left for the White Socks. They still trail one- nothing. Bottom four. Here’s the second base, Andrew McCutchen. Second base, Andrew McCutchen. That’s a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Well, one [Music] swinging a foul straight back. And that skips in the dirt. Swings and miss has struck him out. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Ryan Reynolds grounded out his first time. Reynolds. in the air, left field, down the line, and that lands in no man’s land. A foul ball [Music] way high. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Then he really sells the change up with that arm action. That one misses. Two and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it and kind of a gift in a two strike count. But sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. Gonzalez batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So off speed pitches may be a good complement to that fast ball. That’s to third. Zips it to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Bucks go down quietly. They lead it one- nothing. Back here at PNC Park. There’s the shorts stop at the play. Coulson Montgomery Burrows back to work. Breaking ball inside. Ball one. You know, these White Socks just haven’t produced as many competitive at bats as I’d like to see in this one. They haven’t run a single count full in this ball game. And that’s just wild to me. That stat alone shows they’re making it way too easy to get them out. Fast ball for a strike at 95. And there’s a foul ball. Three and two. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk and he hits a ground ball right side, gets it to first and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Well, I’m impressed with this guy’s internal clock. He knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step, secure his grip on the baseball and make a strong, accurate throw. Here’s Josh Rojas. He’s 0 for one. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. White Socks down a run. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Fast ball for a strike. Hard hit left side. Rolls across the diamond and the first two set down in the top of the fifth. Now batting right fielder Will Robertson. So up next, Will Robertson. First time up, he grounded to third. Just missed. [Music] Blind into right. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Not stopping. He’s going for three. And this is going to be a two out triple. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Mike Tachman will hit next. One for two. That misses and it’s one and0. Two outs with a runner at third. [Applause] Swang and a miss. One and one and a count. One and two. [Applause] Line drive. That’s a base hit. In comes the run from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 1-1. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Go ahead run on base. Chase Maid digs in now. Go for two in this one. Swinging a foul straight back. Two gone, but the go ahead run is at first. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. That’s a hit. And now they’ll have runners on the corners with two away. back-to-back singles that pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Now, the left fielder, Andrew Benendi [Applause] inside. And that’s ball one. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. Strike one. On third, my draw at first. Two out of the inning. [Applause] In the dirt. Throws sails on him and it takes off down the line. Maid draw crosses the plate and he scores on the wild pitch. I’m a little surprised he’s still in this game out there on the mound. He’s starting to show some signs of fatigue and in my opinion when that happens the mechanics break down. You try to do too much with the baseball and stuff like this is way more likely to happen. Here’s a 2-1. Just missed. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. [Applause] Fouls one away. And now three and two. [Applause] stays alive [Applause] and ball four to a board. It feels to me like his time on the mound is running short, starting to show some signs of fatigue. So, we’ll see how much longer they let him go. Now, it’s the second baseman, Lenny Sosa. [Applause] And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That was just eight on the first pitch fast on the ground to third. They get the force. They limit the damage here, but two runs for them and they jump ahead. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates one. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the DH O’Neal Cruz. Cruz. [Applause] Well, a little problem at this location there, but now the bigger problems at first base. Tons of speed over there. He’s going to have to manage the running game and find the strike zone. No outs. Runner at first. Up next for the Pirates, Kean Hayes. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Fast ball in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. 0 and one. [Applause] And that’s in there at the knees with two strikes. may see some movement over there in first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. [Applause] Ball one there. Two strikes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] outside loan and that’s ball two. Way to lay off that pitch down. Chases that one out of the zone. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up. had two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Jack Sinski, the next Pirate to hit. He’s already homerred in this game. Burke checks over to first and he’s back. Slap the other way. Foul. [Applause] and fouled off. [Applause] That’s down and in. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball. those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Pirates the next to hit takes ball one. Tying run is at first. Last half of inning number five. Nope. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Back to right. Nobody can get there. And it’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Burke keeping an eye on him [Applause] at the belt and fires too low and it’s ball three. Here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense. 3-1 count. Be ready to turn on a fast ball. 3-1 now. hit hard on the ground is short and that is the inning. So no runs, no hits, no errors and a runner left. Five innings complete. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates won. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Andrew Heene. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Well, one-run game. Kyle Teal getting ready to hit. This one in the air. Horowitz one down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it out. Luis Robert Jr. So here’s Robert now. Robert in his sixth season, 27 years old, and he was born in Cuba. Ripped on a line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting short stop Coulson Montgomery. Two outs. Base is empty. And now the shorts stop Coulson Montgomery. Let’s win. Come on. And first offering is fouled off. Basketball for a strike. movement in the bullpen. Number 47 loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Ramirez a hard throwing right-hander up as well. That one just misses and the count one and two. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. just misses with that one. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And the White Socks go quietly. So they go quietly there. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates one. Bottom of the six. Digging in. Isaiah Kinder Fa Isaiah Kerfa. [Applause] And that one way outside. Ball one. Late swing fouled off and a count one and two [Music] [Applause] and just misses with that one. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll lead at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. [Applause] Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. [Applause] And a foul ball. stays alive [Applause] [Music] [Applause] out towards right center field. Robertson sizes this one up, calls it in, and there’s one away. Now batting, first baseman, Spencer. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Spencer Horowitz. [Music] And that one almost hit him. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the sixth. strike on the inside corner. One ball, two strikes. In the air out to center. That one gets down for a hit and they have their first hit since the third inning. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. These days, most downfielders play pretty deep, and I’m not sure if that was a factor there or not, but off the bat, you’re thinking it’s going to be a pop out. And it just kind of nestled into that spot where no one was able to get to it. McCutchen in the box now. Takes strike one. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s his eighth strike out of the game. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can be calm when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Ryan Reynolds and fouled off. Horowitz the runner at first with two gone. [Music] That’s a ball. Action in the pen down there. Steven Wilson preparing to come on if needed. Leisure also throwing. in the air. Left field down the line and that is foul [Music] on its way to the corner and that’s a foul ball. [Music] And a ball evens a count. Rip to short. Whips it to first. Inning over. One hit, one left. We’re through six full. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates one. New inning getting started now. The third baseman Josh Rohos. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. That one missed right side. Hard hit throws to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Now batting right fielder Will Robertson. Will Robertson steps to the plate for the White Socks. Pirates. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. Next offering is fouled back. And that one a little bit high. One ball, two strikes down. That misses and it’s two and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. 22 now. Battling here as he fouls it away. Still two and two after the foul ball. Now this is in the air down the line and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. One down. Base is empty to third. Pays fires across the diamond. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. And here’s the first baseman, Mike Tacman. He swings and fouls one off. up and in. And the count is one and one. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. up the middle, dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and he’s out at first. Now batting designated hitter Chase Maid. So a man at first, Chase MRO steps to the plate for the White Socks. And that one is inside. Let’s go Pirates. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Reynolds makes the grab and that is that. The White Socks leave one as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Steven Wilson. 32 appearance. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Nick Gonzalez. He’s grounded out a couple of times. [Applause] And that one fouled off. [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Got him. One away on the strike out. A big first out here in the seventh of the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. O’Neal Cruz now at the plate. And there’s the strike. trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh in the air. Left field. Benendi is there. Makes the grab for the second out. Up next for the Pirates. Third base. Ke Ryan Hayes the next Pirate to hit who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts fought off foul. Come on, you can do it. and downstairs. No, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. Pirates, let’s go. The 1-1 is fouled off and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Down in order, go to Pirates and our score remains 2-1. Now, welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Caleb Ferguson just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Andrew Benendi steps up. Socks left fielder Andrew Benendi in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. There was nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. Now, here’s the cleanup hitter for the White Socks. Lenny Sosa 0 for three in this one. That is upstairs for ball one. And that is out of play. Benitendi gets his lead at first with nobody out. And that one hit to first, but it kicks fouled. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Lined into left center. Base hit. throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. First and second, no outs. And next to hit for the Socks, Kyle Teal. Zack Bunt towards third. Hayes. Runners advance on a good sack bunt. [Applause] Now batting the center fielder, Luis Robert Jr. And now here’s the big center fielder, Luis Robert. Golden opportunity right here. You have to find a way to score the runner from third, especially with less than two outs. Wait for the pitch you want and hit it as hard as you can. Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make calling for the intentional walk and that loads up the bases and the force play is now in order. Coulson Montgomery. So bases loaded with one away. Coulson Montgomery the next to hit. That’s off the mark. And that is ball one. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Next offering way off the plate. Pressurees on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. [Applause] On the ground right side down the line and it’s foul. Next Auburn in there for a strike. And now two and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. So they’re all loaded up. [Music] [Applause] Drilled in the air high and deep right field. Reynolds going back on this one onto the track and he makes the catch. Runners tag up from second and third. He’ll score on the sack fly and they lead by two. In that situation, you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air. Worst case scenario, a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third. Josh Rohox steps to the plate for the White Socks. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. [Applause] Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. misses inside. One and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Number 47 loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Ramirez also getting ready. [Applause] Pop dump squeezes it and that’ll do it. One run in the inning, but they leave two. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the White Socks three and the Pirates won. Bottom of the eighth at the plate for Pittsburgh. Jack Sinski. Pittsburgh. Wilson back to work. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. You know, these Pirates just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. That one is upstairs. [Applause] That one misses and now 3 and 0. [Applause] swing and a miss as he was out front instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended. Tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. This to third. Rohas throws on to first and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Catcher Joey Bart. This is Joey Bart. Go Pirates. Swing and a miss. Strike one. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. Go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. One down. Base is empty. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] misses and a count one and two. Really nice two-strike pitch right there. Very tempting but couldn’t get the chase in the air right side. Robertson gets under it. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting shortstop Isaiah Connor Falefa to the plate. There’s the strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Next offering is in for a strike. hit on the ground to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. And one, two, three go the Pirates. And they still trail it here. Three to one. Now pitching. New pitcher now number 47. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of them right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Will Robertson steps to the plate for the White Sox. Will Robertson. [Applause] There’s the strike. 0 and one [Applause] swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Fouls it back with two strikes. [Applause] and misses inside. [Applause] Swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center. makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting first baseman Mike Tman. So digging in Mike Tman. [Applause] There’s the strike. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Carmen Majinski loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. [Applause] ripped into right field. Base hit. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Chase Maid steps to the plate for the White Socks. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Taken over at first with one away. [Applause] That one hit to right. Reynolds on the run. Makes the grab on the run. Two down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Ben Tendy to the plate. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. [Music] There’s the strike. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] Two balls. One strike. This one in the dirt [Applause] just off the outside edge. Now three and one. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Popped up. Foul territory behind the plate. Bart makes the grab and that is that. So, one hit is all they get. To the bottom of the ninth we go. Top of the order. Do up. It’s the White Socks three and the Pirates won. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Grant Taylor. I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So, it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. Back to the top of the order now. And now the Pirates lead off man, Spencer Horowitz. Ball one, no strikes. Taylor, a 6-3 righty. He features a four seam fast, a cutter, a slider, and he occasionally uses a curve out towards left center. And Ben Tendy able to make the grab. Now batting second base Andrew. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. [Applause] That misses the zone. Ball one. The White Socks trying to close out a two-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. That clips the zone and that is strike one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. The pitch to McCutchen outside and the Cal is two and two. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. On the corner at the knees for a strike. [Applause] two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. That’s outside. [Applause] Taylor is just one strike away. Here’s a 2-2 swing and a miss. Struck him out and that is the ball game. Well, we saw a lot of good pitching and defense in this ball game and when you have a lowscoring game, it’s imperative that the players stay on their toes ready to make plays behind their pitcher and they did exactly that. It’s an excellent win. Everyone goes in the clubhouse feeling really good about themselves. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
