🔴LIVE🔴San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals/July 18/ Mlb Envivo/ MLB The show 25

Start of the weekend is upon us. It’s Friday evening baseball on the show. It’s the San Diego Padres’s and the Washington Nationals. First pitch coming your way next. Please welcome your Washington Nationals. Just about set to go now. Starting on the mound in this one, Jake Irvin and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Fernando Tatis Jr. the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. So two balls and no strikes. [Music] And another ball top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Ground ball up the middle and that one handled. One up, one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. Singy, this righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher. Yeah, Boog certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom, and I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one. You’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed. When you roll out a lineup like this, maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit. Perhaps that’s it. Luis Az comes up empty with a swing there. And a swinging a miss. Foul ball still 0 and two. One out. Base is empty. [Music] Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Young makes the catch. Two away now. And now it’s Manny Machado. Another solid power season. Machado goes 6 feet 3 in hitting third in the lineup. A former first round pick back in 2010. Swing and that ball smashed on a line. Young grabs it on the run. Padres’s go down quietly. Now it’ll be Washington’s turn. It’s a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. Today’s starting pitcher you Darvish. What do we need to know here? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that erra will have dropped over time. Alex Call, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Next offering is fouled back. The 1-1 is fouled off. battling here as he fouls it away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Gets a piece and stays alive. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. On the ground right side and it goes just foul [Music] and a foul ball. He stays alive. Come on, Alex. And a base hit. And after grinding through that at bat, he gets the best of him. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Here’s Nathaniel Low. fought off foul on the ground to first. Could be two. Good feed. That’s one. Back to first. Double play. 363. Nicely done. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play, and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Josh Bell at the plate now and the first pitch misses for ball one. Darvish kicks, delivers, and it’s fouled away. Darish delivers. Swinging a miss at a slider. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you get hurt. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. First frame of the night behind us and it’s nothing nothing. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. And here is Xander Bulgarts. Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter late with the swing there. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. Slapped hard the other way but foul. punch him out. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Outside low now. One and two. [Music] And there’s a ball. Really good take, especially with two strikes. stays alive. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Jackson Merrill the next to hit. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately under the Mendoza line so far this month. check swing and he went strike one. No score here in the second. [Music] Next pitch is outside. Dave Lawrence assigned to work home plate in this one. Good umpire, Boog. Very fair, very consistent. Now, I did hear some feedback that he opens up the outside corner a little bit on left-handed hitters, which, you know, for me, I’d be kind of salty. So, maybe something to keep an eye on and see if that factors into this one at all. Fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires. I mean, you see them a lot. Yeah, B. They’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level. So when you respect that, I think over time you can develop a relationship with them. So a man at first, here’s the veteran second baseman, Jose Glacius and takes low for ball one. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four guys, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Seven. The designated hitter, Luis Campus. Luis Campusano, the next up for the Padres’s looking for his first big league hit right here. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Runners at first and second with one gone. Swing and a miss. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Two on, one out. He goes down looking. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout. Making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. Stepping in Rice Johnson. Called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. First and second, two down here in the top of the second. Down the line, it’s a base hit. Runner around third. He scores and they have the lead. Now the throw comes in. Runner holds it third. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know on the mound it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. So two outs with runners on the corners. Elias Diaz the next up for the Padres’s and downstairs line drive. base hit right field. Runner from third comes across. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Comes through with the RBI. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. 0 for one so far. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Comes up empty. [Applause] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout, but two runs for him and they jump ahead. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Padres’s two and the Nationals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second and now for Washington, Paul D. Young. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darish. He has more than a hundred wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Darvish back to work and that’s in for a strike. 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swings and misses and it’s nothing and two. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing anding miss and get through this at bat. And that one is lifted in the air. Tatis makes the grab. One down. And now it’s Luis Garcia. Garcia. That one’s in there. And that is strike one. Next offering is fouled back. That one just misses. And that one is inside. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Let’s go DC swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Here’s the third base, Brady House. Third base, Brady House. [Applause] [Applause] And that is downstairs. One and0. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. [Music] In the dirt. Blocked. Garcia leads off first with one away. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Johnson makes the grab and there’s two gone. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Number 51 Dalon Lyle digging in for the Nationals. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. DC. First pitch just misses. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it. They make moves on the base paths. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. And it’s one and two. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Two outs in the air to left down the line and that lands in no man’s land a foul ball. Righty delivers. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Batting eight catcher Riley Adams. And here’s the catcher Riley Adams. started to go after it. Now it look down to first and he went around. That’s ruled a swing. Let’s go DC on the corner for a strike. 0 and2 now. Probably the best one we have seen. throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. That’s towards center. Merryill on the move. He makes the grab and that’s the inning. So, the Nets leave a pair. They trail things here. Two nothing. top half of the third inning. So digging in now for San Diego, Luis Az and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next offering is downstairs. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Leading off for the Padres. Man at first, nobody out. Stepping in for San Diego. Manny Machado. He’s 0 for one. San Diego. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Runner at first with no outs here. Runner on the go and Manny gets a piece. Runner goes again. The one-1 is fouled off. Nobody out. Runner at first. And Machado able to spoil that pitch. Good job to fight that one off. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Bell steps on the bag for one to second. tag safe. So they get one at first but can’t complete the double play. Xander Bogarts and a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. His first at bat was a strikeout. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. man at second. That one’s in there. And the count is 0 and two. [Applause] The shorts stop takes the ball. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. And it’s even up. One out and a runner at second. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Music] Goes down looking. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. Next to hit, Jackson Merrill can’t get to it as it drops into the corner. The run comes in from second and they lead by three. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. On the ground right side and that’s just foul. Man on second, two down. Hit in the air center field. Young has this one sized up and makes the grab. And that is that. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now three nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Nationals Park as we go to the last of the third up now for Washington, Jacob Young. And that misses ball one. Next offering is fouled back and he grounds one back up the middle on the run. Sends it over to first and it beats him. What a play. Just an outstanding play going up the middle right there. And the exchange to get the throw off to first just shows you why he’s one of the best shorts stops around. So smooth yet so quick at the same time. And any slower. And those wheels burning down the first baseline are going to turn that into an infield hit. Now a chance for Alex Call. swing and a miss and it’s 0 and two to the right side sends it to first and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. designated hitter Nathaniel Low. Two down, base is empty. Nathaniel Low up to hit. He’s 0 for one. Let’s go. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a two out knock keeps the inning alive. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Low. The runner at first with two gone. up the middle. They take the force out and that is that. So one left for Washington. Still down three nothing. Back in Washington DC. And now the DH Luis Compusano. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. First offering misses badly for ball one. Campusano goes 5 feet 11 in 230 lbs. And he’s usually a catcher. Today he gets off his legs a bit. He’s the DH. So a foul ball makes it one and two. [Music] keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Next offering upstairs. Woo! I thought he’d bite right there. Next offering is down low. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Up next for the Padres’s leftielder Bryce Johnson. Bryce Johnson the next up for the Padres’s singled and drove in a run his first time through. Fouled off left side. glove side, but it gets through. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Backto back singles. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield, so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pen. Jake Irvin will depart. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. number 61 takes over on the mound. At this point of the ball game, we’re talking about middle innings. And he need a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen. We’ll see just how many outs he’s able to give his skipper. First and second, no outs. Here’s Elias Diaz outside low. And that is ball one. First and second, no outs. Top half of inning number four. That’s off the inside corner. Two and0. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Music] That’s in there. And the count two one. Just missed. And that’ll load the bases. Not the easiest thing when you’re talking about a guy that’s, you know, perhaps was going to be in the rotation, you know, maybe a long relief guy. To not start an inning, to come into an inning with pressure on it and and try to get yourself comfortable. Late swing, fouled off. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter, can’t be over anxious. That pitcher’s up against the wall. Make him come to you. And a swing and a miss. And that is a big first out. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it. and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put him away. Did a nice job right there. Louisa Rise stands in, squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. Fast ball for a strike. Base is loaded. One away. The one-1 is fouled off. away right here in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. One run is in. Oh, the throw is wild. Nicely done. Brings home two. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Here’s Manny Machado now. Swinging a ball lifted to center field. Young pulls that one down. Two down. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind swirling around out there. Now Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Lifted to left center way back there and that is gone. And they add to the lead. It’s 8 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. So, two down and the batter now Jackson Merrill and that one fouled off. Two out. Base is empty. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. [Music] Off the mark there. And it’s one and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. So, a three-run shot for the Padres’s here. It’s now an 8 nothing game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Paul D Young, the short stop takes a ball. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. Right through there for a strike. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. Just missed. Clearly down in this ball game, and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. [Music] Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Outside with a breaking ball. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Go. A breaking ball in that 3-2 count. Kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. So a man aboard. Luis Garcia now at the plate. One for one with a single so far. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. To third, Machado to second. There’s one. And that’s two. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Two outs, space is empty. Now the third baseman Brady House flyed to left his first time. There’s a strike. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. He swings and fouls one off. swaying and a miss. Struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Washington and they’re on the short end of an eight nothing score. Mitchell Parker into the game. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season. and that’s not where you want to be at all. So, we’ll see how he does here. So, digging in now for San Diego, Jose Glaciius, one for two. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. You know, these Padres’s really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. And that one finds its way through. had a good start to the inning. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. And next is the designated hitter, Luis Compucus. Oh, this one high and deep way back there. Forget it. His first homer of the year. and they boost their lead. It’s 10- nothing. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Bryce Johnson the next up for the Padres’s. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And that’s through there for a strike. One and two. Tap softly third base side. A swinging bunt and foul ball [Music] inside and the count is even. Two and two. [Music] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another base hit center field. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. That’s about as textbook as it gets. got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a TE. And now it’s Elias Diaz. This one in the dirt. Snap throw to first. Johnson back on a dive. Johnson gets his lead at first. Nobody out on the ground to second. Might be two. Off balance feed. There’s one onto first. Double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Fernando. So the batting order turns over. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. 0 for three in this one. He’s a guy, Chris, whose highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms in the sport. Breaking ball in there for a strike. Yeah, the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance, he’s going to throw it from the warning track if he has to. And that misses one ball, one strike. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. That missed by a lot. And the count is two and two. And a good eye there. fouls it back with two strikes. [Music] Two down to hammers that one deep left field and forget it. He circles the bases. It’s their second home run of the inning and they add a run. It’s 11 nothing. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pin. Mitchell Parker out of the game. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching now on the mound for the Nationals, Andre Lara. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. So digging in, Luis Ais in the air left field call. Sizing this one up. Nabs it. And that is that. But two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working. Home half of the fifth coming up. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. This game’s a bit of a blowout. Sing. Let’s talk about something random. Let’s do it. Sing. Did anybody ever give you the silent treatment? I don’t remember that they did. I think they were pretty cool with me in terms of celebrating my rookie year. first home run came in Anaheim against the Angels. And I always love to watch now, though, especially when that player is unsuspecting. You know, some guys, they’ve they’ve been around long enough to know there’s a good chance I’m going to get the silent treatment, but when that player’s maybe been grinding it out for a little while and finally gets that home run, is expecting the big lift coming into the dugout and they just stonewall him, it’s awesome. Next offering is in for a strike. Every once in a while they’ll work that same trick on a veteran player if say he’s been cold or hasn’t hit a home run in a long time. And that’s always fun when you don’t see it coming at all and everybody in the dugout goes crickets on them. Yeah. And and that veteran player’s usually got a response for those individuals with one or the other hands. And first off is fouled off. That was your worst start one year. Didn’t you start like three for 33 or something? Oh, it was awesome. It was I mean it was awful. Not awesome. It was awesome for It was awesome for pitchers facing me, but it was awful for me. It sounded like some type of deal at a fast food restaurant. Like three for 33 or something. That’s to third. Machado throws to first in time. Old man for the fifth inning. Moving along. Two quick outs. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Two down, base is empty. Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. And that misses and it’s one and0. swinging a popup. That one gets down for a hit. And that turns the lineup over. Now batting left fielder Alex. Next a hit for the Nats. Alex Call. Let’s go. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. And there’s a foul ball. [Music] Going to count one and two. Young leads off first with two down to the inning and he chases that one. That K is his third of the game. Nationals leave one. They trail in this one 11 to nothing. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Stepping in for San Diego, Manny Machado pops it up as he checks his swing. Fair ball. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. man at first. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Xander Bogarts. He’s already homered here in this one. First pitch, not close. Plenty of offense in this one. Singy, I guess you’d say kind of what we expected, though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um, but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. The Nationals have some action going in the pen. Luis Garcia looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Chaffen getting loose as well. [Music] Maybe a two ball. Five, four, three, and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays look simple. Two outs, space is empty. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Swing. And this one’s bounced to the ground. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One hit in the inning but no one left. 234 do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Padres’s 11 and the Nationals nothing. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Yuki Matsui. And he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Now it’s the DH Nathaniel Low right through there for a strike. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Alec Jacob preparing to come on if needed. Hoing warming up as well. The 01 and that one upstairs. Ball one just missed. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swing and a ball lifted left field. One down. Up next for the Nationals, first baseman Josh. Here’s Josh Bell for two in this one. And first offering is fouled off. gets the outside corner with that one. The Padres’s up big in this one here in the bottom of the sixth. That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Hard hit right side to first and there’s two away. Now batting short stop Paul. Two down base is empty. Now it’s the Nationals cleaned up hitter Paul De Young. Clips the corner. 0 and one. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office. Even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter, not able to get anything going. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now we’re talking, baby. So up next, Luis Garcia, second base [Music] Garcia. Fast for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Two outs outside low and the count is one and two. And that’s downed away. Just misses with that one. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that’s a foul ball. [Music] Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back there. Pulls it in on the warning track. So one hit is all they get. We’re through six full. It’s the Padres’s 11 and the Nationals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Glacius. Laura, a 6’4 righty, 180 lbs, and he was born in Venezuela. Just missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way, and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And another ball. The guy at the plate could recognize. Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. That one is absolutely belted into the bullpen and gone. He sends a rocket to left. It’s 12 nothing. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Could be pretty dangerous when you fall behind in the count. 20. You’ve still got to try to find a way to keep that hitter off balance. Well, he wasn’t able to do it there. The hitter did a nice job of turning that pitch around, not missing it in a hitter’s count. So, here’s the Padres’s DH, Luis Compusano. Deep drive down the line. Foul ball all over the first pitch fast ball right there, but just a little bit out front. Got to let it travel just a bit more. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. That’s the third house. Slings it across. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Rice Johnson the next up for the Padres’s. Three for three with three singles. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Swinging a foul out of play. One out. base is empty and a run in here in the top half of inning number seven. That misses the zone. Now one and two. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch in the air to left center and there are two outs. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of them that’s saying, “Hey, where you at outfielder? call me all, but he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Elias Diaz, the next up for the Padres’s. That one hammered left field. That’s back there. Stretches out and holds it in. The Padres’s get one in the inning with a solo blast. Seventh inning stretch time. Major League Baseball is on the show. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the third base. Brady House. Third base. Brady House. Matsui back to work. Swinging a miss. Strike one. and one highf fly ball out towards left center and puts the squeeze on that one. One away. Now batting and now the right fielder Dalen Lyle. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the seventh. And that’s a little bit high. Two and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Foul ball there. [Music] this to third. Machado throws to first in time. That’s out number two for the National Catcher Riley Adams. Two outs. Base is empty and now up for Washington. Riley Adams. Fast for a strike. Let’s go. headed towards the corner and that’s a fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. Not in time. He’s got a double. Up now for Washington. Jacob Young. [Music] There’s the strike. Adams on at second with two down. Ball one there. That’s out to center field. Merrill settles under this one. makes the grab and that is that. This one pretty well decided at this point. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s 12 and the Nationals nothing. Back here in Nationals Park, we go to the eighth. Up now the Padre leadoff man, Fernando Tatiz Jr. in for a strike. Going one warning track wall and you can touch them all. Baseball man. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And they add on. It’s 13 nothing. That’s their fifth homer of the game. Man, they’re all getting into the action. It’s starting to feel like a home run derby up here. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Andre Lara won’t go any further tonight. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. Now, the new pitcher in the game, Luis Garcia. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Next for the Padres’s, Luis Arise in there and it’s 0 and one. swings through that one for strike two. He doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. going to now. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Now batting third base Manny Machado. Man at first, nobody out. Manny Machado the next up for the Padres’s. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first and that’s going to be ruled to swing. Rolled to short. Possible two ball to Young. Over to second now to first. And it’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Two down, base is empty. Now here’s Xander Bogarts now. He’s already homerred in this game. He had a foul ball. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck way back there and gone. He’ll touch them all. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. It’s 14- nothing. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. So digging in now for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. And there’s the strike. And that one sliced fouled. [Music] Swings and misses. Struck him out. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. Back after this on the show. Back in Washington DC, here’s the left fielder, Alex Call. Alex Call. And the first pitch misses for ball one. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. with that. You don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. Falling behind two and one and that one missing low. There’s the strike. Three and two. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and it one hops the wall into second easily with a leadoff double. All over that one right there. That’s a good sound coming off the bat man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. So, a man aboard, Nathaniel Low digging in for the Nationals. Up and in. And that’s ball one. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind him. This is where they need to get going. Right through there for a strike. Pitch misses there. Now two balls in a strike and that one hammered. Ranging back towards the wall. He’s got it. Grounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Next to hit for the Nats, Josh Bell. This is the classic manufacturing a run situation. A runner at third, less than two outs, and a golden opportunity to bring him home. Breaking ball through there for a strike. Call stands at third with one gone in the inning. Way outside and the count even one and one. swinging a ground ball, base hit, and a run in to score. Picks himself up an RBI. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Now, it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. There’s the strike. next offering is fouled back. Well struck left field. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Two on with one out. Here’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia. One for three. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Two on, one out. Liner base hit. One run across. Another scores. Two runs in on the play. It’s 14-3 now. Right there. Does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Yuki Matsui departs. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Alec Jacob comes on now. And something to be aware of, the long ball has been a little bit of a problem for him this year. Runner on at first with one gone. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. Just missed. Now one and that drops in for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Cut on and lifted in the air. Puts it away for the out. Now batting number 51. And now up for Washington, Dalen Lyall. lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Squeezes it. That is the inning. Three runs on four hits. No errors and one left on. Ninth inning coming up. Padres’s leaded 14-3. All set to start the ninth in this one. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Glacius. That clips a corner. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. Popped up foul territory behind the plate. Adams makes the grab. One away. Luis Compucusano the next up for the Padres’s. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one and he hits a ground ball right side. The throw to first. Two up, two down. Now batting leftielder Bryce Johnson stepping in for San Diego Bryce Johnson. Just missed. [Music] Not even close there. And that’s ball two. And another ball. [Music] That one catches the zone and the count is three and one. There’s the swing and a miss. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. And down on strikes he goes. And it’s a three up, three down inning. All set for the bottom of the ninth. Now Riley Adams. Riley Adams. That one finds the corner. One and one. Foul ball. Fast ball is outside. Next pitch just misses. Two balls, two strikes. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] Swanging a ball drilled center field. hauls it in for the out and there’s one down. Up next for the Nationals Centerielder Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. Young, you talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. Close, but called the ball. One and0. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. Boo. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. reaches over the wall and he’s got it. Alex Call. So they’re down to their final out. Alex Call digging in for the Nationals on the ground and this should do it. Throw to first ball game and the Padres’s take this one in a blowout. Offensive explosion today for these players. They gave up a few runs, but they had more than enough firepower to turn this one into a blowout. 14-3 the final score for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
