MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about set to go. And on the mound here today, Zack Gallon. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this, every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark, in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Brendan Donovan leading things off and takes a strike. First pitch 640. And there’s a foul ball out towards right center field. Griet brings it in. One down. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinal lineup. wins. This has been a good productive lineup so far this year. Currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boog. I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing going for the fences. But if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. You get more guys on base and then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands on the ground. And that’s just foul. [Applause] [Music] This one in the air. Marte makes the grab and there’s two gone. Two outs. Base is empty and now Wilson Contrus and takes low for ball one. Ball one. No strike. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. The 2-2 on the way. And that one is inside. Two outs. Base is empty. Bows it back with two strikes and down on strikes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Chase Field, our starting pitcher in this one, Eric Fetty. What do we need to know here about the right-hander? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. I mean, it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point. Maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Catel Marte, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Here comes the pitch. That’s to third. sends it across the first. They get the out on Marte. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Corbin Carroll and Boo. He brings a big bat to this lineup. He’s on pace to hit more than 40 home runs this year. And that’s a guy where if it’s more than a couple of games without a dinger, guys are wondering what’s going on. You’re so used to seeing him round the bases. You put a guy like this in the middle of the lineup and just put it on autopilot. Big- time hitter. Always a ton of fun to watch. Corbin Carroll, the next to hit, takes ball one right through there for a strike. No, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. [Music] One down, base is empty. And that skips in the dirt. [Applause] The two- two. Good eye right there. Really good take especially with two strikes outside and that is ball four. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, batting third left. Here’s Guriel. Lordes Guriel Jun. Fetty throws over and he’s back in easily. in there and it’s on one. Just missed. Carol the base runner at first with one out. Swang and a line drive slicing into right field. The throw to third and the throw is offline. Safe at third. He was all over that one. Show willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Auheno Suarez up to the plate now. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And the count is two and0. just off the inside edge. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. That’s a strike. And they’re all loaded up. Two walks in the first has to be some cause for concern. I mean, you’re talking about a guy you want to pitch deep into the ball game. It’s not going to help with the pitch count right there. They can’t afford to hand out free bases at this rate. Here’s Josh Naylor. Rips that one to right. Makes the grab. Here comes the runner from third. In comes the first run of the game as the Diamondbacks take the lead. Well, he hit that one pretty well. I think he would have went a lot more than a sack fly if not for that nice play by the outfield track down. Good job of getting the run in. Randall Griick. Now I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Knee high strike. Another one. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two. Two aboard, two outs. Swing and a miss. All you got to do is concentrate and execute this next pitch. Get yourself out of the jam back into the dugout. [Applause] swing at a highf fly ball left field. Nukebar and the inning is over. Two men left stranded but they do push across one. Onto the second inning here in the desert. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Cardinals nothing. Back here in the desert. Second inning set to go. And now the right fielder Alec Burlson. Burlson getting to start in right. 26 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020. There’s a strike. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. And that’s off the inside edge. One and one. James Kingsley, our played umpire. Consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah. He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with them. Climbing the ladder with that fast ball, one and two. What about some nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly uh you call the umpire blue, you better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. And here’s the catcher, Johel Poso. [Music] Come on back. Come on. You can do it. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four guys, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Left field. Guriel settles underneath it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there are two outs. Batty six leftielder digging in. Lars newbar. This one popped up right side. Naylor brings it in for the third out and down in order go the Cardinals. They’re down one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom half of winning number two. Leading off, James McCine [Applause] drive ripped down the left side towards the left field corner. So, runner aboard to start the inning. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad job. Those small moments can be costly. Alec Thomas now [Applause] and that one fouled off. Next offering is fouled back. McCann gets his lead at first with nobody out. Foul ball still 0 and2. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Almost got him. Highf fly ball down the left field line. He’s got it. Runner tagging from first. The throw in. Man, Boo, I love watching an outfielder take on the make that play and it’s a lot easier to watch from up here because that can be painful in the end. You know the wall’s coming up on you quickly. So, you have to maintain concentration in able to make that catch and hold on to it after contact. Peraldo Purdom stands in here. Takes ball one low and one out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. Lift it in the air. Left field pretty well struck. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Now batting second baseman Catel Marte. So back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Catel Marte will hit next. Grounded out his first time up. [Applause] And that one just misses a ball and no strikes inside. Just missed. Oh, no need to go right at this guy. First base is open. He can hurt you, so make him expand his zone. If he doesn’t, give him a walk. Oh, that’s just out. Corbin Carroll waiting to hit for the Dbacks. Runner at second. Two down and ball four. Two aboard. He did not take the bat off his shoulder. The entire bat. This is Corbin Carroll. He walked and came around to score his first time up. That one misses. That’s five straight. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. That one the other way. He’s got it. And that is out number three. So they strand a pair. We head on down to the top of the third. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Cardinals nothing. And we’re back. Top half of the third inning. Here’s the rookie third base, Thomas Sajay. Gallon back to work. That one found hard the other way. [Applause] heading down the line and that drops foul. The O2 knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Ball one. Strike him out. Swing it a miss. Stock him out. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, Nolan Gorman stands in now and watches strike one. [Applause] Let’s go. One down. Base is empty. Slice the other way and foul. Here’s the O2. One ball, two strikes. That one missed. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. Thomas moving back. Pulls it in on the warning track. Betty ninth. Centerfielder Victor Scott II. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. First pitch misses and another ball. Come on. right side. Marte tosses to first and that will end the inning. Redbirds down quietly. They still trail one- nothing. As we go to the last of the third, here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. First pitch, not close. You know, these Dbacks showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan, and it’s working. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] to the right side and that chance handled. Throws to first in time. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Now batting third baseman Auadio Suarez up to hit now. Walked his first time. Hammer down the right side but foul. One out. Base is empty. Next pitch is downstairs. I got a ball. One strike. And that one fouled off. The one two and they’ll do it again. And that’s down and away. Swings here and drives one well left field way back. And you can’t forget it. He’ll touch them all. He’s up to three home runs in the series. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after bat. He’s that confident. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. And now it’s Josh Naylor. And foul ball and it’s fouled away. [Applause] Just off the inside corner. Now one and two [Applause] foul ball left side. He’ll see another. [Applause] Fouls it off. Still one and two. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Swings and miss has struck him out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Gritic in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. just misses the mark outside the zone. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the last half of the third. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and the inning is over. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now a two nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here at Chasefield. And now the DH Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. Just missed. fought off foul [Applause] and he hits a ground ball right side and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting shortstop Mason Win. Mason Win digs in now. First time up was a pop out. The shorts stop takes a ball. The Cardinals hitless so far in the game. They say you win. I got one ball, one strike. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Fights that one away. Still one and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. One down. Base is empty. Foul ball still a one and two count. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I’d call it a power curve ball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Two down. Base is empty. Wilson Contreras now at the plate in there at the knees and that’s strike one. Swang going to ground her foul first base side. out towards right center. That’s well struck back there and into the pool. It’s out of here. He flexes his power with that swing. His 13th home run of the season and they’ve got their first run. It’s 2-1. Well, there goes the shut out just like that. They’re still behind, but this is a start. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Burlson the next to hit takes outside. And another ball maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. There’s the strike. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. McCann gathers, throws to first. That completes the strikeout and that’ll do it. One for the Cardinals on the solo home run. And it’s now a two-1 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Back here in the desert. Bottom four. Here’s the catcher, James McCann. James Mccan. That’s towards center. Scott under it. Makes the catch and there’s one down. Now betting the center fielder. Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas the next to hit. Fly to left his first time. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. 01’s the count. Hard ground ball base stop. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting short stop will hit next. Fly to left his first time. Pickoff throw. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes ball outside. throw and they got him. Now, I got to admit, I’m kind of shocked he got caught stealing right there because of how big the lead was over at first base. Catcher doesn’t throw very well either, but for whatever reasons, things came together and they got the out at second. Really impressive job, I’d say. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back in the air pretty deep out to center field. Scott under it and he makes the catch. That is the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Johel Poso. Poso goes 5′ 11 in 27 years old. And he was born in Venezuela. Ball won there. Next pitch off the play and now two and 0. [Applause] He’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss in the air right field. Now batting left fielder Lars Nar. Lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals. He popped out his first time. [Applause] Little bit low. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Tying run is at first and we’re in the top of the fifth [Applause] and it’s fouled off. Clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back [Applause] up the middle. Slings to second. Throw to first, but he beat it. Now batting third baseman Thomas Saji. Here’s the third baseman Thomas Sajay-Z went down on strikes his first time through late with the swing there. He’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Swings and misses and the count is 0 and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay on the double play right here. One ball. This one in the dirt. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. And now a man into scoring position. Well, that right there erases the chance at the in ending double play. So, good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch. changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way. Next offering upstairs. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. One out and a runner at second. [Applause] Full count. Nolan Gorman in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Oh, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Runners of the corners here. One away. Gorman getting ready to hit. Fly to center. His first time in the dirt, but kept close. No advance. Good job behind the dish. at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. And another ball. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. And that one is in for a strike. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. Swing at a line drive. Base hit to left field. In to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single. We are tied at two. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. First and second, one out. Scott now at the plate. 0 for one so far and fouled off. One out. Runners at first and second. Sliced hard but foul. [Applause] That one not close. And that’s ball one. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Two on, one out. This one kicks away from McC. And the runners will move up. Got to take advantage of this opportunity now because of the wild pitch. They’ve got two runners in scoring position. Good time for the hitter to lock in. Put the ball in play hard somewhere. That one misses and it’s three and two. [Music] So Jay-Z on third. Gorman over at second with one down. [Applause] That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. He knew he had a little wiggle room with the open base, but now that disappears. Mistake to this next batter, and this inning might really break open. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Zack Gallon out of the game and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching the new pitcher in the game, Jake Woodford. And he has some nasty breaking stuff. Jake Woodford, Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] and that’s outside. Base is loaded. One away [Music] on the ground. Could be two. Feeds to second. Out there. Back to first. Double play. Nice job getting over. And that ends the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run. Two- two game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter, Catel Mare. Catel Marte. In there at the knees. Well, these Diamondbacks digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve been lining the ball all over the ballpark and unfortunately sometimes it’s right into a glove. But still, they’ve hit nine line drives so far and that’s something they should feel very good about. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. Speaking of those line drives, you can’t get too discouraged when they don’t drop in for you. It’s important to remember that you pretty much did everything right and that’s just baseball sometimes. Nukebar calls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Diamondbacks, Corbin Carol stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s 0 for one. Late swing foul to the left. 82. And that’s ripped into left base here. So, a man aboard now with one away. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. And it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. One for two. Runner on the go. Swing and a miss. Safe at second and he easily steals the bag. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. One out and a runner at second. Last half of inning number five on the ground right side and it’s just fouled. That was close. The O2 and downstairs. One ball, two strikes to count. Bows it off. Still one and two. [Applause] And there’s the ball. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. [Applause] Spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball out to short in plenty of time to first. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Third baseman Auo Suarez. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Au Heno Suarez. He’s already homered here in this one. [Applause] that misses the zone and it’s one and0. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Sunny Gray up and throwing. Palante a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Two outs and one in scoring position. So, two balls and no strikes and misses inside. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play the game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. First and second, two outs. Josh Naylor stands in now for the diamond pass. and that one fouled off. [Applause] That’s a ball. [Applause] on the ground to third to Jay-Z. They take the force out and that is that two left on. We’re through five. We are tied 2-2. And we’re back. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now, here is Mason Win. That pitch in for a strike 0 and one. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. Number 27 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. DFani the right-hander also getting loose. Jack Swain called strike and it’s nothing at two and that’s in the dirt. Two straight [Applause] and a swing of miss and there’s one down. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. just needs to let the ball travel a little more. His timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Here comes Wilson Contreras. He’s already homered in this game. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And another ball. [Music] [Applause] [Music] and a foul ball in the dirt and it’s three and two. inside and that’s ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what, he earned that one. Go ahead. Run on base. Now up the Cardinals number four hitter Alec Burlson 0 for two in this one. Not even close there. Ball one. maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. [Applause] That one finds the zone and the count one and one. Squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. [Applause] Got him swinging. And now the catcher comes up to him. Yo Pos, that one’s upstairs. 41. Counts one and 0. [Applause] Two outs. Tapped softly on the ground, but a kicks foul. fights that one away. Still one and two with a go ahead run at first and we’re in the top half of the sixth. [Applause] Sit him down. Next offering misses down and away. [Music] Punch him out. Two two on the way. Swing and a miss and he struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. So, it’s no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on base. 6782 in the bottom of the sixth. We are tied 2-2. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Sunonny Gray. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season and keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Randall Gritick digs in now for the Diamondbacks. Right fielder Randic. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Riley O’Brien appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Romero the power lefty up as well. Sneaks through base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. All over that one right there. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield. And even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. Here is James McCann, a guy who’s turned himself into a good framer. was originally drafted by the Tigers. Second round pick in 11. Gritic gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Applause] On the ground to third to Jay-Z to second. There’s one and they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. First pitch just misses. And that’s in for a strike. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Poly hell. He had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Now up next for Arizona. Ruer takes off. Pitch outside. Throw to second. Out at second. That ends the inning. The catcher definitely looked ready for that stolen base attempt. got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Number 27. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. And now it’s going to be leftielder Lars Nuke. Come on. Now one missed and another ball. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, the go-ahead run is on base with a knock. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got it to an advantage count. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Go ahead run on base. Now the third baseman Thomas Sajay-Z center field Thomas gets under it brings it in and there’s one down. Now batting second base Nolan Gorman. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. Not close with that one. And that’s ball one. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run. Stands at first. Ball left outside. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. [Applause] Next one misses. Three and one now. Calling this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. M. And there’s a hit. And the go-ahead run into scoring position. One away. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Now a good opportunity to potentially jump ahead in this game here in the later. Next to hit, Victor Scott. Guriel handles the chance. That’s out number two. Up next for the Cardinals, the designated hitter, Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. [Applause] And he takes one right on the black and it’s 0 and one. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. Fly ball to right. Gri out. No runs on two hits. No errors and two men left stranded. Seventh inning stretch time. We are tied 2-2. [Music] Back here at Chase Field. Bottom of the seventh. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Gray back to work. And there’s the strike. ball. One and one. [Applause] Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. One ball, two strikes. The shorts stop takes a ball. Two two count. And that one is inside. [Applause] Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] Ground ball right side and it goes just fouled. This to third and that one handled. Gets it to first. He didn’t make things easy for him there, but they still get the out. Second baseman Catel Marte. Catel Marte up to the plate. Not your prototypical leadoff guy. Gets on base. Yes. But also some power. Fouled off left side. [Music] That’s outside and the count even. One and one. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Everything came together for him. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. Hit that hard. It makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. And next is the designated hitter, Corbin Carroll. And that is out of play. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. No ball. Two strikes. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping the ball at base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. So up next, Lordis Goreel Jr. First off, bringing it just misses. Griel gets a piece and that misses. And it’s two and one. [Applause] Cut on and lifted in the air. dives, but it kicks off his glove. And that’ll put runners at the corners with two away. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with the pitch in that location, but somehow he got the to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. Really important at bat coming up now. Go ahead run is at third and next will be the cleanup hitter Aueno Suarez. Got to be careful with a slugger like this because he can turn it into a three-run game in the blink of an eye. [Music] [Applause] Two on, two outs in the air left field. Nukebar gets there. He’s under it. And that is the inning. Diamondback strand a pair. And this game is still tied at two and two. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Anthony Dclani. And if you dig into his walk, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats. Now it’s the short stop. Mason win for three in this one. Late swing, fouled. All [Applause] to the right side. He takes it on his own. First out in the top of the eighth. Good armside run of that same side hitter right there. Very difficult to put that ball in the air or get through it. Just bores in on the hands. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. [Applause] That’s in there. That’s strike one. Movement in the bullpen. Kendall Graveman up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. [Applause] Yeah, there’s the strike. outside loan going to count one and two. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch and just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Sets him down looking. went back to the slider and it was a good idea. Now that Alec Bur 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Declani 34y old vet and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2011. lined and that’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. I love that swing and I’m sure his hitting coach does even more. Took a pitch right on the low outside corner of the zone and just ripped it for a base hit. And that’s easier said than done. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at first. Pinch running here. Garrett Hson. Garrett Hson. Go ahead run on base. And now Joho one for three. Ball one and a pitch inside. Here’s [Applause] a rocket to right field. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. So, one left for the Cardinals. Score remains 2-2. [Applause] now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Riley O’Brien. He’s doing the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. You see that RA and that’s where you love Josh Naylor. Naylor in the box now. Takes strike one. And that is downstairs. And that is ball one. There’s the strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger. And perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. [Applause] And it remains two and two. I got three. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. It’s a lead off one. And that’s the go-ahead run. A breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. No outs. Runner at first. Now it’s the right fielder Randall Gri [Applause] inside corner. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. There was a high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. [Applause] Oh, great stop. The feed for one out. Relay to first double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. McCann in now. towards first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Diamondbacks down quickly. Score remains deadlocked to 22. Now pitching for the on the mound. The closer Kendall Grave9 Kendall Graveman. [Applause] Here’s the left fielder, Lars. Left fielder, Lars Nuke. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] [Applause] on a line, stretches out and holds it in. Great swing of the bat right there trying to get on as that go just wasn’t able to find a hole. Now here is Thomas Sajay-Z. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. John Curtis up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. [Applause] Fought off. Foul all tied up here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] line drive. He’s got it. There’s two away. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. [Applause] Gorman in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. [Applause] cut on and missed 96 of that basketball. He’s been great in this one. Eye hand coordination just failed him a little bit right there. Highf fly ball out to center field. Thomas gets under it, makes the grab and that’s the inning. Nothing doing for the offense that time. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. We are tied 2-2. back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Jojo Romero. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better runs in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. So, digging in, Alec Thomas for the Diamondbacks, center fielder, Alec Thomas. [Applause] That one finds the zone. Strike one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Ryan Helley, the closer is getting loose. [Applause] That one almost got him. There’s a 1-1 popped up foul territory behind the play and out number one on the grab. Now batting shortstop Heraldo P. Here’s the short stop at the play. Peraldo Pomo. [Applause] Gets the outside corner with that one. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Popped up. Gorman and it’s caught for the out. Now batting second baseman Catel Marte. Here’s Catel Marte. One swing is a lot easier than getting two or three hits to win this ball game. You better believe he’s going to be all in to hit the ball over the fence somewhere. [Applause] Little chopper rolls foul. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And they’re at the knees and it’s 0 and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. trying to send this to extra innings. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Applause] Foul ball. Still a one and two count. This guy’s got good power. With one swing, he can win it for him. Uhoh, that got him. And the potential winning run is aboard. Now that next is the designated hitter, Corbin Carroll up the middle. A dive. Nice stop. Got him. A great play to send us to extra innings. So they can’t come up with the winning run and that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. We are tied 2-2. On to extra innings now up for St. Louis. Victor Scott. Now this guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. Graveman back to work. Fouled off. He was late. [Applause] This ball’s chopped on the ground and they’re at the corners with nobody out. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. making a move at third. Coming in as a pinch runner, Jose Farine, Jose. Now it’s the DH, Brendan Donovan. [Applause] That one finds the zone. Strike one in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring with the go ahead run in third here in the top half of the 10th. Breaking ball inside and it’s one and one. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open [Applause] line. And that’s a base hit. runner from third comes across and it’s an RBI single and they’ve got the lead in extra innings. Just so sound in his mechanic gets against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Now the number two hitter Mason Win. [Applause] just missed. First and second here. No outs. [Applause] In the air to left center. Thomas sizing it up. Squeezes it. Runner tags it second. And the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Good read there at second base to move up to third. Now it’s a lot easier to get that run in with one away. Here’s Contrarus now. [Applause] Hit on the ground. Might be two offbalance feet. There’s one on the Naylor. They get two. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a 32 ball game. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer, Ryan Hley. This is an extremely confident pitcher. He loves the pressure. Actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable three-run save opportunity. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now, the left fielder, Lordis Goreel Jr. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. So, the tying run at second. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And the count now two and nothing. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. And at second, gets a piece. [Applause] bows it back with two strikes. [Applause] Up and in. And it’s three and two. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. [Applause] Swinging a drive deep right field. Hson going back. Won’t get to this one. It drops foul. [Applause] Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Didn’t miss by much right there. Just couldn’t get the call off the inside making move at first on a pinch run. Jake McCarthy. First and second, no outs. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Diamondbacks. AU Heno Suarez. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. [Applause] That one in triple digits. Power relievers one after another coming out of the bullpen these days. Got to be ready for that first pitch heater. [Applause] That one hammered but pulled fouled. Oh wow, that was so close to ending this one. Man, just bent into foul territory at the last second. I’m telling you, it can be tough to refocus and and get back into the rest of this swing and a miss. Struck him out and that is a big first out. So up next, Josh Naylor. Well, if he gets the save here, he’s going to have earned it. Just getting through this hitter is going to be a challenge enough. [Applause] Swing and a ball driven out to center. Going back onto the track and he makes the catch. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Randall Grinch stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Got to deliver as the hero. [Applause] Fast ball. Almost got him there. Straighten them up a little bit. [Applause] And the one just missed. [Applause] Two outs. swing and a miss as he was late that time. As a hitter, you got to learn something from that pitch. You clearly wasn’t timed up on the fast ball in a 200 count. You have to be ready to do damage. Next offering upstairs, James McCann in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] That’s a strike and he inches closer to getting out of the jam. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. [Applause] The Diamondbacks down to their final strike. Flying drive and that’s a base hit into center field. The run comes in to score from second. It’s an RBI single and they’ve tied it again. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. First and second, two outs. And here’s the catcher, James McCann. And that one hit to first. Contrarus steps on the bag. They limit the damage here. One run in the inning, but they lead two. We push on to the 11th. All tied up at three a piece. [Applause] Now pitching for the diamond. We’re in extras. And there’s a new arm on the mound. John Curtis. John Curtis. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Now, it’s the veteran outfielder Garrett Hampton. Entered the game as a pinch runner. First plate appearance for him here. Strike one. [Music] [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Now just to submit makes her slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Man at second. Fights that one away. And the count remains 0 and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Next pitch. Not close. Up high. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. [Applause] And there’s a base hit to right field. And they get it in quickly. First and third now with nobody out. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him? Boy, it’s hard to say. That runner on second to start extras is critical and you want to make sure you don’t waste him. If they don’t score this inning, there’ll be some second guessing for sure. Here’s the catcher to hit. Yoel Po [Applause] and that’s him for a strike. with the go ahead run in third. And we’re here in the top half of the 11th. Turned on but foul wide of third. He’s getting the barrel to the ball. Just got to work on that timing a little bit. Chases that one out of the zone. Huge strike out there. So, he needed a strike out there and he got it. And now we’ll see how they play defensively. Yeah, now they can move the middle infielders back a little bit, get into double play depth, then look for a ground ball and roll it up, get a big double play, get out of this inning. I tell you what, that was a big strike out in a spot where they really needed one. Here’s the left fielder, Lars Nbar. Here’s the pitch. Run around the goal. This one chopped on the ground, but fouled. Brothers at the corners. One away. We are in the 11th. Check swing and he went and it’s 0 and two. [Music] [Applause] Two on, one out. Inside and the count is one and two. That’s down and in. [Music] [Applause] Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position and two strikes. just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. And now here is Thomas Sajay-Z. [Applause] Close but called a ball. Ball one. two on, two outs. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball two. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Contrarus at third. Hampson at first. Two out of the inning. Next pitch in for a strike. And the count is three and one. And that one fouled off [Applause] up the middle on the run. Sends it over to first. Nicely done for the eye. So it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. One run can win it as we move to the bottom of the 11th. All tied up at three apiece. back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Phil M. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season averaging more than one per inning. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Thomas getting ready to hit. [Applause] And that one fouled off. [Applause] Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man at the board to start the inning. Next to hit for Arizona, Peraldo Peromo. [Applause] squares, pushes at it, misses it. It’s a strike 0 and one. Bunts it in the air, reaching for it, makes the catch. Now batting second baseman Catel Marte. Big at bat coming up for Catel Marte. This is a big spot for a big time player [Applause] in there at the knees. One. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the cal so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Next offering is in for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down. And one and two. One away. And the gamewinning run stands at second. [Applause] Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] Next offering is outside. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Winning run stands at second inside. Almost got him. Three balls, two strikes. The counts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Got away with that curveball. No doubt about it. It passed right through the heart of the strike zone and he just couldn’t get the bat on it. When you strike out on one like that, that’s when you start having conversations with yourself and they’re not usually very friendly. Now Corbin Carroll to the dish for a big at bat out to short win. They get the force beats him to the bag and that means we’re playing 12. So they strand a pair. 12th inning coming up. All tied up at three apiece. Pitching back now. We’re in extras. And there’s a new arm on the mound. Kevin Ginkle and he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Go ahead run on base. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Fermine. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] Ball one. I got one ball, one strike. [Applause] Swag and a miss. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Swinging a ground ball. safe at first as they can’t make the play. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott, and the pitch is outside. Ball one. [Applause] And a base hit on the line. In comes a runner from third and they’ve got the lead in extra innings. Back to back singles. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. First and second, no outs. And next is the designated hitter, Brendan Donovan. In the dirt, blocked [Music] [Applause] [Applause] ripped on a line to center. Makes the grab. Runner tags at second and the throws offline. Safe at third. Now we’ll see how moving up to third there pays off for him. He didn’t have to tag and go, but now he can score a lot of different ways. Doesn’t have to be a base hit. We’ll see what happens. And now the short stop, Mason Win. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. That one misses and it’s one and0. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. And a foul ball. Fine. The runner at third. Scott over at first with one away. Double play ball to second. Over to Perdomo. That’s one. Not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. I promise you, they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Kevin Ginkle won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching a new of the game, the righty number 67. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. And up to hit is Wilson Contras. First base Wilson Contras. [Applause] He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Two runs across in the inning and we’re deep into extras. right through there and that’ll do it. They put two on the board with a couple of hits, no errors, and one left. And now we’ll see if what’s left of this crowd can rally their troops. Bottom of the 12th coming up, it’s the Cardinals five and the Diamondbacks three. Back here in the desert and the batter now, Jake McCarthy leading off for the Diamondbacks. Left fielder Jake McCarthy. Right down to shoot. And that’s strike one. [Applause] There’s the strike. No ball. Two strikes. [Applause] base hit runner around third. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they trail by one. Well, back within one as he brings home the run. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Auheno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks that puts the corner. [Applause] move to first and he dives back in safely. [Applause] Runner on the go. Pitching for a strike and that’s a stolen base. Not even close. And the tying run is now in scoring position. a onun lead and the home team trying to pull it out. One ball in the dirt and an excellent job keeping it right there. [Music] [Applause] So the tying run at second. Fast ball and he gets out of the way. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. Coming home. Here’s the throw. It’s off and he scores. It’s 55. Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. Hey, that’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Phil Mod will depart and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching for we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. John King bringing in the lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. So, a change being made at first base. Dax bringing on a pinch runner, Bla1 Alexander. Blaze. No, runner at first. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Josh Naylor. lays down a bunt to the right side, tosses the first out on the sack bun. There was a time where that sack bomb was just hoham, very basic, but as increasingly difficult as it’s become to get bunts down in the big leagues. Nice job right there. Randall Gritic will hit next. Well, first base open. Really no reason to pitch to this hitter right here. put him on, have the force at second, first perhaps getting inning ending double play. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. [Applause] And delivers outside. Ground ball up the middle. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Looked to me like he got on the side of the ball a little too much right there. Maybe a little too casual as well with the throwing motion. And when you don’t stay on top of the ball and really get out front and finish with a good release point, it’s very easy to lose control of it to either side. Two on, one out. Here’s the catcher, James McCann. McCann fouls one off. That pitch in for a strike. 0 and two. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch that’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. [Applause] Winning run at third. One down. [Applause] One ball, two strikes. [Applause] to third. It gets through. That’s it. The winning run crosses the plate and the Diamondbacks win it in 12. [Applause] This team was hoping they wouldn’t have to hit in the bottom half of this inning, but they did because the other team scored that run, but they battled back. got the runs they needed for an awesome walk-off win. [Applause] [Applause] 65 the final here today. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. I believe.
