just about set to go now. Now the starting pitcher in this one, Mike Sroa. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Fernando Tatis Jr. the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Off the mark there and it’s two and one. Come on. And misses inside and that’s in for a strike. Three to one count. Saying to himself, I’ve got to get a fast ball here. Just spins a get me over breaking ball to bring the count full. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still fires to first. Too late. And the runner is safe. And the misplay costs him. Pretty much gifted a lead on base runner right there. And as an offense, this is where you really want to take advantage. Apply some pressure this inning. Make that error hurt. Luis Arise stands in. Sroa throw over. Tatiz dives back in. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Swang going to grounder. Foul first base side to second. There’s one to first, but it pulls him off the bag. Batting third, third base, Manny Machado. Here’s Manny Machado. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Outside low ball one. Arise stands at first with one out. That’s a ball. Two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count his pitches and get back into this at bat way high. No strike. And ball four to a board. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left-hand bat. He’s been a great free agent sign. That one misses. That’s five straight. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. One out. Runners at first and second. Highfly ball right field. This could go the distance. Home run. The Padres’s score first. It’s 3 nothing. Boo. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. Bu clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Now here is Jackson Merrill. One down. Base is empty down the line and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. One out. Base is empty. swing and a miss. Struck him out and there’s two down. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And here is Xander Bogarts. And that one fouled off. The next offering misses. Two balls in a strike. Two out. Space is empty. 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it. Two walks in the first has to be some cause for concern. I mean, you’re talking about a guy you want to pitch deep into the ball game. It’s not going to help with the pitch count right there. They can’t afford to hand out free bases at this rate. Now, here’s Jake Croninworth. Little bit low. and the one miss is low. He’s been trying to tease the zone with that slider, but these hitters have showed patience not going outside the strike zone. Two outs. That one’s spoiled and The count now two and one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. And a pinch. And strike two. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Battling here as he fouls it away. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. Young ranging back going gone. It’s their second home run of the inning and they add to their lead. It’s five zip. took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there, too. He gave it a great effort, but you know, those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it. That one pushed foul. Oh, one down. Bullpen already springing into action here in just the first inning. Number 61 looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Fast ball for a strike. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. Swing and a hard hit grounder to third. Brown first and hustling for second. The throw in, but he’s in there easily. Good two strike hitting right there, Boog. A bit of a lost start for some, so that was nicely done to beat the odds. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Mike Sroka out of the game and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Now, here’s a new pitcher from the pen, number 61. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It So, runner at second, two down. Here’s Elias Diaz. gets the slider in there for a strike. Two outs and one in scoring position. Now one and one. Next offering is fouled back. Next one misses. Now two and two. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Brooks on it second with two down. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Swings and misses. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. But two round tripers in this inning. Long ball was working and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back getting the nod in this one. Dylan Cease. What do we have on him? Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of ERA, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. CJ Abrams, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Top of the zone for a called strike. and one and two. No way. And a good eye there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Good eye right there. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Got him looking for the strike out. Called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands. So digging in Jameswood that misses the zone and that’s ball one. Well struck right field and that one is out of here. Homer number 25 on the year and they cut into the deficit. It’s 51. That home run narrows the gap between these two. This one isn’t over yet. When a guy’s got a real hard fast ball, you can’t overswing. All you’ve got to do is get the bat head to the spot. If you do, he supplies the power and you’ll get to jog around the bases like he did right there. One out, base is empty. Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals on the ground right side. Steps on first for the out. batting for it. Here’s Dave Martinez lineup for the Nationals. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Jacob Young. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Josh Bell in the box now. No balls in a strike. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. That completes the strike out. And that’ll do it. One in the inning for the Nationals on the solo homer. It’s now a 51 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. This guy who grew up in big league clubouses. Got to be a nice feeling, Siggy, when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom late on that fast ball. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark. For those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, them being on the baseball field, for some it’s pressure for them. They feel that they are right at home in the air left side. Wood makes the play and there’s one down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left and first offering is fouled off. Arise throws right, bats left. 27 years old and he was born in Venezuela. There’s a swing and a drive and that one hops the wall and he’s got a double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced. He squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. One out, runner at second. And now it’s Manny Machado. He walked and came around to score his first time up. Edge of the zone for a strike. Go and one. And Manny gets a piece. Washington got him. Dave Lawrence rings him up. Now batting Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. He’s already homerred here in this one. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Arise at second with two down. And a strike. Grounded to low. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One left for San Diego. They’re up 5-1. back here in Nationals Park. And now the first baseman, Nathaniel Low. Nathaniel Low. Cease back to work. Close but called a ball. One and0. Come on. Line drive base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning with that fast ball. Even though it’s high velocity, you’ve got to live on the outer edges when it’s right on a tee right down the middle. Professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. Man at first, nobody out. Next to hit for the Nats, Brady House. Laid off, man on. It’s time to play a little small ball. Get some base runners. Try to dig yourself out of the hole. Here we go. And there’s the strike just off the inside edge. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That one ripped. Sheets puts it away. One down. Batting seventh, right fielder, number 51. So up next, Dalen Lyle. Strike one. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn two quickly. Just off the inside edge. Dave Lawrence behind the plate today. Consistent and pretty accurate with the balls and strikes. Yeah, he’s one of those guys, Spook, that just keeps the game moving. Nothing overly unique about the strike zone that he calls and as a result, he’s appreciated by both sides. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there and it’s gone. He’ll circle the bases. Third home run of the season and they cut into the lead. It’s 53. That’s a great way to fire up this crowd. They’re feeling it now. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden, they’re back in this ball game. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. Liner caught at second. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. So, two down now. And here is Jacob Young. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season, Chris. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in at bottom half of inning number two. That catches the corner. Got him swinging. Nats pick up a pair in the inning on this two-run homer. It’s now a 53 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back in Washington DC, new inning getting started. Stepping in for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. First pitch and he just misses. Let’s go check swing called strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Come on. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter and that one upstairs. Ball one and a swing and a miss. Clearly it was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Croninworth stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Swinging a drive deep right field. This one’s got a chance and it hits the fence. Croninworth around second headed for third and this is going to be a two out triple. Putting some good swings on the ball. That’s his second extra base hit in this one. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. So, a runner at third, two men out. Trenton Brooks the next up for the Padres’s. First pitch just misses nuts. That one missing inside. Dives and he can’t hang on. Flip to the pitcher is in time and they get it out on the play. Padres’s leave one then it remains 53. Bottom of the inning for CJ Abrams now taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Late with the swing there. I guess you throw it that hard, you can get away with locations like that right down the middle. But I still think it’s a dangerous pitch. Don’t want to do it again. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another in the dirt and a count one and two. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. He’s already homered in this game. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. Swing and a highf fly ball. Well struck. That one’s deep. And it is out of here. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 54. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. We take another look as Stackcast tells us that ball took off at 110 mph and plenty of distance as well. I mean, that was an impressive home run. Boog. He squared it up and knew it was gone. And now up for Washington. Luis Garcia grounded out his first time off. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Here’s Josh Bell. He’s 0 for one. Pitch misses. Ball one. Swinging a foul out of play. swings and misses and the count one and two. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Jason Adam getting loose out there. Peralta also getting ready. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. On the ground, left side, six, four, three, double play and the inning is over. But not before they answer back with a solo home run. It’s now a 54 ball game. Start of the fourth. So digging in now for San Diego, Elias Diaz. DC. And that one misses up and in. And that’s ball one. Ripped to first. Caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. And that one is lifted in the air. Lyall makes the grab for the second out. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s. Check swing went around. Strike one. swing in a line drive. Base hit out into center field. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting third, Manny Machado coming to the plate for the Padres’s after homering earlier in the game. Yeah, and nobody has hit more home runs for the Padres’s franchise than Manny Machado. You’re right about that. And it was just last year when Manny passed a member of San Diego’s inaugural team from 1969. Nate Colbert for the top spot upstairs. Two quick outs. Needed to get that third one. Wasn’t able to do it. Now you bring up the heart of this order. You got to find a way to get it done right here. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. Gone. his second homer this series and they add to the lead. It’s 74. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. The batter now, Gavin Sheets. There’s the strike of the knees and one. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. way inside and that hit him. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s Full for two in this one. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swing and a ball hit out towards left center field. Lead runner gets the stop sign at third. It’s a two out double. Second and third now. Well, that’s one of those knocks where you almost expect to get some jabs from your teammates when you get back to the dugout. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pen. Number 61 is done. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, they turn to the lefty in this spot, Mitchell Parker. And this is a really tough spot to come into as he tries to keep this one close. You almost have to forget about the runners in scoring position. They’re not going anywhere. Focus on the hitter getting that one out your team needs from you. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. He is struck out and he is walked. Swinging a liner foul off to the right. Sheets at third. Merrill at second with two gone. Next pitch is outside. Chopped left side. Slings to first. Bogart’s retired. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Manny Machado with the blast for the Padres’s. It’s now a 74 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom four up now for Washington. Nathaniel Low. The Nationals in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Swing and a highf fly ball. pretty well struck right field. Chhatis going back and gone. He nails one out to right. It’s 75. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Well, he went up there O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases and the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Dylan Cease gives way. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound with tons of movement. There you go. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. He’s over for one and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. This one in the air center field. Merrill calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting number 51. Yeah, the batter now Dalon Lyle. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. swings through that. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. One down. Base is empty. Got him swinging for the strike out. Pulled the string on the change up. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. And now the catcher comes up to him. Riley Adams 0 for one so far. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Ball one. No strike. Two down to that’s a little high and now two and 0 strike on the inside corner. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. That one is upstairs. Jacob Young in the on deck circle for the Nets. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Two outs, runner at first. Here’s the center fielder, Jacob Young. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. There’s the strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Two outs. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Small one. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again with the tying run at the plate. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Let’s go outside and the count now even up left fields drops into the glove and the inning is over. Nats draw just a bit closer thanks to the solo home run and it’s 75. Back after this on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Stepping in for San Diego Jake Croninworth and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Parker measures 6’4 in. He features a fourseam fast ball, a curb, a splitter, and he works in a slider. Next offering is in for a strike up the middle. Got him on the offbalance throw that takes care of Croninworth. Up next for the Padres’s first base, Trenton Brooks the next up for the Padres’s. One for two. And that drops in for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. Next pitch is downstairs and that one hammered. Wood going back on this one. Pulls it in on the warning track. Now batting catchery. Two down, base is empty. And now Elias Diaz. First pitch misses. Well struck left field back there. Unbelievable. And that’s going to bang against the wall into second and he’s got a double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left. Didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence, but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases. So, runner at second, two down. insteps El Nino Fernando Tatiz Jr. Let’s go DC and it’s fouled away. Rudder at second. Two down. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and one. check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Outside. And that one upstairs. Hey, you got this. Swings and misses. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. One left for San Diego. They lead it seven to five. pitching back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound. Wandy Peralta. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Well, these gnats doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. The numbers say their chase rate or swings at pitches outside the zone is under 25%. And I think that’s a big reason why they’re scoring runs. 0 and2 now. bows that off to the left and will do it again. By not chasing out of the zone, they’re getting good pitches to hit. When you can do that, you have a much better chance to square up the baseball and do damage like they have so far. Outside low, one and two cow. Chases that one out of the zone and that’s the first out. Oh, tough night at the dish. punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. So digging in Jameswood first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Do it again. just missed. Let’s see. Let’s go. Swang in a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. Way back there. Gone. And he’s gone yard again. That’s his third home run of the game. It’s 76. Singi. The ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact. Man, it’s been impressive. He’s putting on quite the show with the dish here in this one. and he’s just so locked in with this swing and he’s just not missing right now. A three homer game, man. It’s so special and I tell you what, it’s a lot of fun watching him pull it off as well. Base is empty, one away. Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals. First offering and it just misses. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. looking to get the tying run on base and delivers outside. Peralta maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run. Chris, yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. One down, base is empty, and that one fouled off. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. And now the switch hitting first baseman, Josh Bell. Josh Bell. And that one is inside. Just missed. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Right side hard hit. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But the Nationals get one back on the solo homer. It’s now a 76 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Jose A. Ferrer. This southpaw has been really good against left-handed hitters. Jose A. Now the DH for the Padres, Luis Arise. Luis Arise in the air pretty deep out to center field. That’s it. That’s puts it away for the out. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting third base Manny Machado. Here comes Manny Machado. He had a big swing back in the fourth. A two-run homer and that helped them get the lead. And what a swing it was. Boo. Poetry in motion. And those are the type that you hardly feel when you connect with the baseball. Just so smooth. A great feeling off the bat. Just missed activity in the bullpen. Luis Garcia up and throwing. Irvin warming up as well. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. That one back there. Out of here. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 86. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. To the slight opposite field into the gap. man. Making it look easy, that’s for sure. So, one out, nobody on. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Gavin Sheets. A little out front there as he swings through it. Here comes the one. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Now batting center fielder Jackson Merrill. And now here is Jackson Merrill. One for three. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second and that is out of play. Man at first, one away. That one’s in there. No balls, two strikes. That front door slider, such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So, you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane. One ball in the dirt. Sheets at first. One gone. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Oh, you got to be pretty quick with the bat speed these days. So many guys throwing in the upper 90s and you see the velocity on that one. Just tough to catch up to. I mean, guys are coming in and they’re going max effort. They’re not looking to go a long distance. They want to get as many strikeouts as they possibly can. Bulgart stands in now and watches strike one. gets the outside corner with that one. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Laser could be trouble. And that’s going to kick into the corner. Coming home and he’s out. Cut down. And that ends the inning. Textbook defensive execution right there. Outfielder hits the cut off man. Relay throw to the plate. A perfect strike and a great way to end the inning. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer Robert Suarez. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0. swings through that one for strike one. Just not able to catch up to that velocity. Come on. Knocks that one away. Healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Just misses with that one. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. And a swing and a miss. And now just two outs away. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. Had a strike right through there. That one triple. Next pitch is outside. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. And that one hit 97 on the gun. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Swing and a miss. Three and two now. Fly ball down the line and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That’s back there and gone. He flexes his power with that swing. It’s 8-7. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. One down. Dalen Lyle digs in now. Just missed one more time. And that one off the outside edge. A onun lead. And the home team trying to pull it out. Swing and a miss. 98 on the gun. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Toughest pitch to hit. Fast balling on the outer black. Man, sometimes you just got to tip your cap. So, they’re down to their final out. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals as the Nationals are down to their final out. Swing and a miss. That one at 101. This one driven deep way back there and it’s gone. We are tied. He sends a rocket to left. Second home run of the inning for him. It’s 88. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. So many times a sinker inside is a foul ball off the ankle for the batter, but that time he did a really nice job of staying inside the pitch and getting through it. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Robert Suarez to parts and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Yuki Matsui. and he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. And now the center fielder, Jacob Young. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. That misses one and0. trying to send this extra innings. Swaying and a ball popped in the air and that lands in no man’s land. A foul ball comes up empty. That’s strike two. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Brian Hoing, the young right-hander up and throwing. grounds one to short. Boggards handles the chance. Throw in the dirt and he can’t come up with it. How about Well, I definitely think the speed down the line played a factor on that throw. He had more time than he thought, but as a fielder, the speed of the game and the speed of the runner sometimes can get in your head. And he just rushed it and failed to make a clean throw. So, two down. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. Well, with pretty good speed over there at first base, I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit. step off. Just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base stealer just off the inside edge. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Over to first and save. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. That one finds the corner and it’s one and one. Backto-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. The lefty ready and a 1-1 swing and a chopper out to short. Bogarts with the throw to first. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working all even now at eight apiece. You’re dialed into the show. Back here in Nationals Park. Now it’s the second baseman Jake Cronin. Jake Cronin. Ferrer back to work and he takes one right on the black. It’s 0 and one. up and in and he gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. Splits the plate. Now he’s in a one-two hole. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you get hurt. Zips it across and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Good armside run to that same side hitter right there. Very difficult to put that ball in the air or get through it. Just bores in on the hands. So up next, Trenton Brooks. sliced hard but fouled down the left side. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. Goes down looking. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go-ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. Drove it off the wall last time, just missed out on a home run. First pitch and he just misses. Two down. go ahead run in scoring position. And that one hit 97 on the gun. Well, out there on the mount, he’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out, get out of this inning. Good hitters count the 200 out to short. Abrams zips it to first. Padres’s go down one, two, three. So, no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on. Seventh inning stretch time. We are deadlocked at eight apiece. And we’re back. Set for the last half of the seventh. And now up for Washington, James Wood. And that’s through there for a strike. Going one. I think he was sitting off speed right there because he just let the fast ball go by. Fought off foul. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Next one is off the play now. One and two. Good job to fight that one off. MVP. MVP. Got him. Outside pitch. Got the better of him that time. Now batting. Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals. Known for his late inning heroics. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is, I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. And fouled off with the winning run standing at second here in extra innings. Right through there for a strike. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Big strike out there as he works to strand that go ahead run at second base, but job’s not done yet. Got to get that last out before you can exhale and get back into the dugout. It’s kind of tough to do with this home crowd applying so much pressure. Now it’s the DH. Josh Bell 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Fast ball is outside. The winning run on second base and now it’s even up. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. So they bring on their closer in the eighth, Kyle Finnean. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to them. Go ahead. Run on base. Fernando Tatiz Jr. getting ready to hit. This is a big spot for a big time player. Heater at 98. And that one a little below the knees. One ball, one strike. Tap foul at the plate. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Shoot him down. Squirts away a little bit. Runner holds tight as the count moves to two and two. Fights it off. You’ll see another Here’s the 2-2 and a foul ball. He stays alive. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit. Outside corner got him looking. He can’t believe it. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Next is the designated hitter Luis Az. down the middle for a strike and it’s 0 and one. There’s the strike. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Andrew Chaffen up and loosening in the pen. Irvin also throwing one out. The go-ahead run is at second. And here in extra innings, gets a piece and stays alive. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. These first two hitters really making him work out there. Already 14 pitches this inning. That’s off the mark and it’s two and two. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. struck him out looking. Most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base paths and can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat. You’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position. Here’s Manny Machado now looking for his third home run of the game. Yeah, he blasted his second of the game in the sixth inning. Guy looks like he’s playing on beginner mode in this one. Beginner mode is where it’s at, Chris. And the first pitch misses for ball one with the go-ahead run standing at second. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. is there. The countdown two and two. Fouls it back with two strikes. And a pop off right side foul territory. And that’s the third out. So, it’s no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. We are deadlocked at eight apiece. Back in Washington DC, ready for the bottom of the eighth. Here’s Nathaniel Low. Man at second, nobody out. And Chris, certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah, the way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. Yeah, I think part of that goes into it’s just so hard to come up with hits in today’s game. Starters don’t go deep and so hitters are seeing multiple pitchers every night and that makes it more challenging just to come up with a single. The next pitch misses and a count two and one. In the air, left field down the line. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. Throw comes into third. Safe at third and a winning run is on the doorstep. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Just a blue pit behind third right there. And that’s a really tough play for a third baseman or shortstop to get to. And the same for the left fielder. So, he just found a perfect place to drop that one in right there. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Here’s the third baseman, Brady House. Golden opportunity right here. And there’s the strike. skips in and excellent work to corral. That one could have been dangerous. And that one missing low. He’s got a base open so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. Swang and a miss. It’s two and two. Bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Fast ball is outside. Dalen Lyall in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Call four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. Lined and that’s a base hit. Throw is offline. This one’s over and they will walk it off in extra innings. Well, you come to the ballpark hoping you’ll see something special that day. Whether you’re a player or a fan, a walk-off win. Nobody forgets that. A memorable moment that’ll be logged in the backs of the minds of everybody that witnessed this here today. And the final here today, 98 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
