MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals – Jul 19, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

almost ready to get underway. And on the hill, Jake Irvin and Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, but he doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Fernando Tatis Jr. leading things off and takes a strike. That one missing inside. Fernando Tatis Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. Two balls, one strike. And here it comes. Not even close there. Three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Luis Arise. Luis Arise stands in in there for strike one. Irvin over to first. Tatiz dives back in. Nobody out. Runner at first. [Music] And he boots it. Still manages a throw. The throw won’t get there in time. And that leaves them with runners at first and second. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. First and second, no outs. Here’s Machado breaking ball through there for a strike. No outs. runners at first and second and Manny gets a piece [Applause] the O2 and Machado able to spoil that pitch. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. One squirts away a little bit. Nice job behind the plate there. [Music] One, two now. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Strike him out. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Now Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit. swaying at a ball popped in the air and a base hit. Relay throw to third and he’s in there as a run scores on the play. Wastes no time there. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there and you know on the mound it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. that misses and a count one and two. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Runners are at the corners, one away. Next offering upstairs in this situation. He’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. [Applause] swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field in comes the runner from third. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. That’s a good job right there. You got two strikes on. You just got to battle. Two on, one out. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Music] [Applause] That’s inside. Now a fly ball to right center. Young on the move to the gap. He’s got it. And there’s two down. Batting seven. The designated hitter Luis. Take a look at the lineup singing. This righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher. Yeah, Boo certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom. And I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one. You’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed when you roll out a lineup like this. Maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit. Perhaps that’s it. trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues and a foul ball. [Applause] [Applause] And that’s way high and that is ball one. First and second, two down. Ground ball right side and it goes just fouled. comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. That completes the strike out. Inning over, but two runs for him and they jump ahead onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Padres’s two and the Nationals nothing. back here in Nationals Park and on the mound for San Diego in this one, you Darvish singing. He’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind him, but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. Alex Call, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across, this is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. And that drops in for a strike. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plate. Here’s a 2-2. We got full count. got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Here’s Nathaniel Low. back up the middle in a base hit. Just kind of slice that one into center. Betting third. Josh Bell at the plate now. Josh Bell [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 and one. [Applause] Nope. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] That’s down and in. There’s the strike. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Music] Get out of here. He gets there with the slide. The feed for one. He’s out to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Just so impressed with the movement on that plate. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there and of course the most important part was getting the out. Now it’s Paul De Young up to the plate. out of the ground to third to second. There’s a glacius. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. Nationals leave one. They trail things here. Two nothing. Back in Washington DC. Top of the second. So digging in now for San Diego. Bryce Johnson. Irvin back to work. That’s a little bit low. Johnson getting the start in left in the eighth spot in today’s lineup. And he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2017. That one inside now two and0. Dave Lawrence behind the plate today. Consistent and pretty accurate with the balls and strikes. Yeah, he’s one of those guys, Spook, that just keeps the game moving. Nothing overly unique about the strike zone that he calls and as a result, he’s appreciated by both sides. Next pitch is outside. Well, I would expect in this three- 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if they’ll walk you. That’s in there. Three balls in a strike. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher’s got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitter’s got to hit to his strength. So, you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 32. He goes off speed, gets the out. Here’s Elias Diaz. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. [Music] Two balls. No strikes. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] Line drive. Fair ball. That play looks routine defensively, but with all the little hooks, it can get real tricky down in the corner. Kept it to a long single. Nice defensive play. So, man aboard, one down, and it’s Tatis at the plate. The walk and a run scored his first time. And that one is in for a strike. [Applause] [Music] That one outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. Two consecutive base hits for this team. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. First and second, one out. And here’s the first baseman, Luis Ais. Ball one, no strikes. Diaz, the lead runner at second. Tatis over at first with one away. swing and a ball lined out towards center. Young snags it for the second half. Here’s Manny Machado. Now, he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Fast ball in for a strike going. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. [Applause] in the dirt. Slow roller up the middle. Young handles, throws to first. Machado is out and that is the inning. Padres’s leave a pair but they hold the two nothing lead. Bottom half of inning number two and now it’s Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia Hard hit left side. Bogarts with the throw to first. One up, one down. Batting six, third baseman Brady House. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. right side. Arise steps on first for the out batting seven right fielder Dalen Lyle. Two down, base is empty. And here is Dalen Lyall. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. Two out. Space is empty. That one the other way. Tosses to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nationals go quietly. They trail it here. Two nothing. Top half of the third inning. There’s Bogarts now. Short stop. Xander Bogarts. Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter. Inside one and0. You know, these Padres’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Popped up to Young. Pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one away. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Jackson Merrill at the dish. Now, if you look at his early accomplishments, most start by calling him the youngest player ever to do something. Yeah. Do you have an example? Of course I do. Jackson Merrill is the youngest player all time with a multih homer game, including a walk-off home run. Now, that’s a good night at the yard. lifted in the air now the left side Young in position makes the catch and there’s two down up next for the Padres’s second two out is empty now a chance for Jose Glacius Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this 01’s the count. The 01. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Line to left and that’s a fair ball around first. Digging for two. Throws to second and that’s a double. So now the DH spot, Luis Compusano. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. Just missed. The Glaciius at second with two down. Next offering away upstairs. Strike one. Oh, that’s that slurp right there. Threw it extremely well. Talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to. hauls it into Indiana. One left for San Diego as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Up now for Washington, Riley Adams. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that is out of play. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. A little out front there as he swings through it. One ball, two strikes. hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field, just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now up for Washington, Jacob Young. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. This one popped up middle of the infield. Hauls it in for the out and a couple of quick outs. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Call in the box here. lets that one go for a ball. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. And a swing to miss. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Two strikes. out towards right center field. He’s got it. And that is out number three. And we’re back. Here’s the left fielder, Bryce Johnson. Bryce Johnson. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. Let’s go. On the ground out to short. Throws across the diamond and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. And now it’s Elias Diaz. One for one with a single so far. First pitch misses. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Little bit low. And now 2 and 0. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. That catches the top part of the zone and it’s two and one. Just missed all three. ground ball right side. It squirts through. So that will bring up the top of the order with one away. Up next for the Padres’s right fielder Fernando Tatis Junior. So the San Diego batting order turns over. Fernando Tatis Jr. the next up for the Padres’s turned on but foul wide of third. fouled off. He was late man at first. One away. [Music] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. and El Nino is stifled for the K. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Arrives at the plate and takes high there. One and0 on the ground right side gets it to first and that’ll do it. Padres’s leave one but they’re on top two nothing. Back here in Nationals Park. Bottom of the fourth. Nathaniel low up to hit hitter. Nathaniel low. Oh, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than 100 wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. Yeah, that’s downstairs and outside. One ball, two strikes down. [Music] Swinging a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. And there’s one down. Up next for the Nationals, first baseman Josh. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. He’s 0 for one. First pitch. Not close. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Line drive caught. It put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard. You know, line drives don’t always find a hole, but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit below, the better off you’re going to be in the long run. And the batter will be the shorts stop, Paul de Young. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Next one off the plate inside and it’s 2 and 0. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The relay throw. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So runner at second, two down. Next to hit for the Nats, Luis Garcia grounded out his first time in there and it’s 0 and one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. And he’ll one in the dirt to third. Tag got it. Bang bang play and the inning is over. No runs, one hit, no errors and no one left. We played four. It’s the Padres’s two and the Nationals nothing. Back in Washington DC ready now for the fifth inning. Manny Machado up to the plate. Irvin back to work. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Young grabs it on the run. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. The pitcher’s his friend. He’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Bogart’s 32 years old and he was born in Aruba. Clips the corner and now it’s even one and one with a short stop. Takes the ball. [Applause] Off the mark there and a full countdown. That’s the third. House sends it across to first. Bogart’s retired. Up next for the Padres’s, centerfielder Jackson Merrill. Next for the Padres’s, Jackson Merrill. Oh, you got to give him credit out there on the mound. on this outing. Started off a little shaky, but he’s found a way to settle in and turned this into a pretty good start. Kind of shows you a lot about his mental makeup as a pitcher. Jumps, throws in time. Got him. Nothing doing there for the Friars. They’re up two nothing. [Applause] And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Up now for Washington, Luis Garcia. And the slider catches the zone. Well, these Nats need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Go. [Applause] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Let’s go. Come on. Machado makes the grab. One down. Now batting. Third baseman Brady House. Now the third baseman Brady House grounded out his first time up. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. [Music] Darish delivers. And now one and two. [Applause] gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] swing and a miss. Struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. And now the right fielder Dalen Lyle. First time up he grounded to third. Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Oh no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Couldn’t get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. [Applause] Adams takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. No strike. Lyle the runner at first with two gone. Let’s go. That missed by a lot and the count is 2 and0. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. [Applause] The count two and one and a swing and a miss there. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down. That’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. This might be a steal situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. And there’s a ball. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Jacob Young in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. You got this. Ground ball to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, one left for Washington and they’re down two nothing. Now pitching for the back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher Andre Lara pretty tight game so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Glacius up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. You know these Padres’s really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. Cut on and lifted in the air. Young long run on his horse. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Couple of hits in a row for him here. You know what they say. Couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second base and dropped it in there. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. At the plate, Luis Kusano. Rudder at first with no outs here. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. The 1-1 on the ground right side and a base hit. lead runner to second. So two on and nobody out. Now batting left fielder Bryce Johnson. The batter now Bryce Johnson for two in this one. One in the dirt. Counts one and0. First and second here. No outs. Breaking ball misses down and away. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Next offering misses. They’re now 3 and 0. I got three and0. And there’s the automatic clearly taking all the way there in that 3 0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle and they’re all loaded up. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. So, they’re all loaded up. Elias Diaz the next to hit. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] First pitch and that’s in for a strike. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter, can’t be over anxious. That pitcher is up against the wall. Make him come to you. The one down the line dives. What a play. All three runners tagging up. He’ll score on the sack fly. Three nothing. Huge defensive play right there with the bases loaded. Oh my goodness. If that ball gets by him, everyone scores. Tremendous diving catch and a lot of guts to go after that one. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here calling for the intentional walk and that loads up the bases and the force play is now in order. So bases loaded with one away. Luis Aas the next up for the Padres’s one for three. [Applause] And that’s outside ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. All loaded up and we’re the top half of the sixth. Hit hard on the ground to the right side and it’s just fouled. That was close. Right through there for a strike. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. He’s dealing with a great two strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. [Applause] This to center field. Base hit. One run is in. Here’s the throw, but it’s offline. He will score. It’s 5 nothing. Well, there you go. with the RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pen. Andre Lara will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for number 61 on the pitch out of the penny here. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It here comes Manny Machado. [Applause] And that is downstairs and it’s one and0. [Applause] Two on, one out. Runner on the to go. Next offering is fouled back. Here’s the pitch. Ruer goes again. Little chopper rolls foul. Still only one out here in the inning. [Applause] Base hit and a run comes in. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] [Music] Ball one to Bogarts. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. Minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch. The 1-1 is fouled off. Three. Swings through him for the K. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Up next for the Padres. So first and second with two outs. Jackson Merrill, the pride of Sivera Park, Maryland. Same hometown as Mark Tasher. Text message. This kid grew up with text messages. Yeah, he did. We’re the first generation or the last generation that grew up without the internet. And that makes us morally superior to these kids, Chris. Yes, we can think and do research in books. That’s right. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. One ball, two strikes [Applause] way high. [Applause] Two on, two outs. And that one ripped into right. And foul ball. [Applause] That’s down in a slider missed. And that one ripped to left. Paul squeezes it and that’s the third out. So nine batters come to the plate, four of them score. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Padres’s six and the Nationals nothing. Bottom of the sixth inning and now the center fielder Jacob Young. Center fielder. Every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Darbish kicks delivers. fall off foul. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Got it. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him the chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. Call batting with one down. Takes a strike. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. That’s off the mark. And the count one and two. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. Check swing. No appeal. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting two down. Base is empty. Nathaniel Low now at the plate. One for two. Swing and a miss as he was late. No, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Two outs and one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. Fouls it off. Still one and two. fouls it back with two strikes. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] It goes down looking. So, another good inning for him on the mound. Six shutout innings. Now it’s the Padres’s six and the Nationals nothing. Well, this game isn’t very close. Singy, let’s see if we got any messages from those tuning in today. I know we got some good stuff in there. Sing, you grew up in the Bay Area. Did you have a favorite player as a kid? Yeah, I love the A’s lineup. I mean, guys like Ricky Henderson, Dave Kingman, Terry Steinbach, um, I mean, you just go on and on. Tony Armis, uh, just some tremendous rosters back then. And I loved as a kid getting on the BART train, the Bay Area Rapid Transit, pulling up right there to the stadium, and then going in and watching the game. You also had the pleasure of going over and hitting and taking batting practice at a big leaguer’s house. Who was that? Yeah, Willie McGee, one of the greatest of all time in my opinion. Not in the home neighborhood. Yeah, his folks live right down the street from me. And that’s where his batting cage was. I used to look out of my backyard down the hill and just dream of one day maybe being able to go over and hit with them. And that dream became a reality when I was drafted by the San Francisco Giants. Capusano stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. Ground ball right side. Bell tosses to the pitcher covering the bag and two away to start the seven. A well thrown slider like that one can be tough to get in the air. Good downward break on that one. Two outs, space is empty. Bryce Johnson will hit next. Hey, all one’s the count. [Music] The one out to short, fires over to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Padres’s go down quietly, but they’re on top by a count of six to nothing. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Alec Jacob. He last pitched two days ago. Now pitching for San Diego. Number 37, Alec Jacob. Here’s Josh Bell. Leading off for Washington. First baseman Josh Bell. That’s too low. Ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Ryan Hoing, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. The 10. Two balls, no strike. Swinging a foul straight back now. One miss. [Applause] And a ground ball to first. And he handles it himself for the out. Now batting shorts stop Paul D. Young. And now Paul D. Young. Come on now. And there’s the strike. 0 and one. and downstairs. One ball, one strike. Just missed. [Applause] The other way. arise and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting second baseman Luis Garcia. Two down, base is empty. Luis Garcia getting ready to hit. lifted in the air right field and makes the play. And that’s out number three. New inning getting started. And here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. Nope. Ball one. Was good pitch there. One and one. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Just missed. Three balls, one strike. [Music] That’s out to center field. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. He’s so solid. Calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air. And you just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. That misses the zone, it’s a ball and two strikes. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Remember Mark Kat was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. And Tati is able to stay alive. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. That one close rule the ball and it’s three and two on the ground to third and that’s just foul. Tatiz waits and that is low for ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. When you go that deep into it at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Runner on at first with one gone. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count and you can play around a little bit more as the bat expands. The Padres’s up big in this one. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another foul ball. Still 0 and two. DC fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] Let’s go. The two swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. Well, you see him trying to pull that inside pitch right there and that’s not the kind of approach that you want to have. Even if you do get to it, it’s going to be very difficult to keep it fair. You’re just going to make it a long strike at best. You have to be able to stay within the baseball on the inside of that path to it. And that way, if you’re a little quick, ball gets hit hard somewhere and it’s not foul. Machado in the box now as he leaves that one up high. [Music] Outside low, two balls in a strike. Two outs. That misses ball three. So now two on and two outs. Now batting. So two down. It’s Xander Bogarts now. In there for strike one. One’s the count. Two on, two outs. A change up missing. And it’s one and one. One and one. [Music] Swung on. Popped up left side. House. And that is that. Padres’s leave a pair. They lead it though six zip. And we’re back out of the bottom of the eighth. And now up for Washington. Brady House. Brady House. Jacob back to work. And that one upstairs. Ball one. That’s in there. And the count one and one. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t. Right there. In for a strike. Now, one to two. Now this one’s crushed down the line. foul ball. Oh, it’s a really good pass of the ball right there. Just a little bit too quick. Got to find a way just let it travel a hair more. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] towards first. Arise takes it to the bag and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Dalen Lyle next to hit Dalen Lyle. upstairs and that is ball one. Bases empty, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is downstairs to third. Handled by Machado. Zips it across. Two up, two down. Now batting the catcher, Riley Adams. And now the catcher comes up to him. Riley Adams. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Tap foul at the plate. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Swing and a ball popped up. Bogarts makes the grab and that’s the inning. Three up, three down for Washington. Still up against a six nothing deficit. Now pitching now on the mound for the Nationals. Mitchell Parker bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. [Applause] Here’s the center fielder Jackson Merrill. Center fielder Jackson Merrill. [Applause] That clips the corner [Applause] right through there for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that off. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. And that’s downstairs. Going to count one and two. Oh, that’s in. [Applause] Right side. hard hit in plenty of time to first and they get the lead off man in the ninth. Now batting second baseman Jose Ilacius. Jose Eacius the next up for the Padres’s and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. The Nationals have some action going in the pen. Andrew Chaffen looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Garcia also throwing. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. That’s to third. House tosses to first. Two up, two down. Now batting designated hitter Luis Compan. Two out. Space is empty. Now at the plate, Luis Compusano center field. Young makes the catch in. So no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Padres’s six and the Nationals nothing. Now pitching for back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Brian Hoey and we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say spin rates very high and it just breaks a ton. Jacob Young digs in now for Washington. Center fielder Jacob Young [Applause] and that drops in for a strike [Applause] inside ball one. [Applause] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. [Applause] And a breaking ball misses outside. [Applause] Highf fly ball out to left field. Johnson makes the play and there’s one away. Now batting left fielder. And now here’s the Nationals leadoff man, Alex Call. 0 for three in this one. Little bit low. [Applause] right through there for a strike. The Nationals with a lot of ground to make up here. The last half of inning number nine up the middle. Glacius throws to first in time. That’s an out. Up next for the Nationals designated hitter Nathaniel. No. So, it’s their last chance in this one. And here’s the DH for Washington. Nathaniel Low. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. Ground ball to short. This ought to do it. Throw to first ball game and the Padres’s take this one in a blowout. Good win by six runs. Always nice when you can win by a touchdown or a couple of field goals. You want to keep that momentum going knowing the offense can score at will bring it into the next one and get another W. 6 nothing is how this one ends for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long. What the move?
