MLB LIVE🔴 Cleveland Guardians vs Oakland Athletics – Jul 20, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
just about ready to roll here. And today’s starter, Joey Kantio and Singi, that may be his name, but the strikeout is his game. Well, Boo, I can tell you’ve been working on that one, but yes, you are right. This guy strikeout per nine over 11. I mean, that’s just getting it done. There are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup, and when you look at what he’s able to do, man, it’s going to be a fun one to watch today. Ready to go now. The A’s designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. Yeah, that’s in for a strike. And away we go this afternoon. And a pitch. One, one ball, one strike. Swinging a ground ball towards first, but foul. The one two swing and that ball smashed on a line. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner around first and hustling for second and he’s got a leadoff double. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Ripped that one down the line and kept it fair and even when you hit it that far out front, you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory. And that right there was perfect. Now it’s the shortstop Jacob Wilson. Strike to the outside corner. Going one man at second. turned on but foul wide of third. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. One ball, two strikes. Count foul ball still a one and two count. Runner at second. Nobody out. And there’s a base hit to right field. Now a long throw home. Oh, he botches it. picks himself up an RBI. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. Now a chance for Nick Curts swing and a fly ball well struck left field. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. And no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Nick Curts Boo. He’s really been showing off the pop in this series so far. Two homers and you know he’d love to add on with another shot today. I’m interested to see how they approach him. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. Possibly thinking about home run number 100 here. He’s just one shy of that milestone. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He really committed to that fast up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. Swings and blasts one deep to left center and it’s gone. A massive home run. His second homer of this series. It’s three nothing. Singi. That’s a special one. His 100th career home run. Man, 100 career homers. Pretty impressive. That one was a hanger. And pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. So, one out, nobody on. Tyler Soderstrom the next to hit and a swing at a line drive out of right field. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Two outs. Space is empty. Giorella steps in. And it skips into dirt. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Stepping in Maxie late with the swing there. All one’s the count. Two outs. And that’s outside. Good job to fight that one off. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. The A’s with a two-run blast. It’s now three nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. back here in Cleveland. And on the hill, Jeffrey Springs. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. We go to the bottom of the first now. The left fielder Steven Quan just missed upstairs. Now two and 0. Two and 0. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Last round. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. Snuck the fast ball by him. Not too often you’re going to see a sub 90 mph fast ball get by a hitter for the strikeout. Especially when it’s in a very hitable location like that. Makes me think he’s either looking for something else completely or he tried to do way too much with that swing. Nolan Jones in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. He’ll touch them all. His fourth home run of the season. And they inch closer. It’s 3-1. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. With a low 90s fast, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. waited for it was like BP all over again. Base is empty, one away. Next to hit, Jose Ramirez. Fly ball down the line and it falls. And that’s going to get into the corner. Now around second going for third. the relay, the tag, and he’s out trying for three. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. He probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Two down, base is empty. And now the DH Kyle Manardo. And there’s the strike. That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper. Next offering way off the plate. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Two down to that one pushed to the left and fouled. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Two out. Space is empty. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Stays alive. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Nice grab on the run. And that is that. But not before they answer back with a solo home run. And this is now a 31 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Second inning set to go. And now here’s the A’s catcher. Austin wins. Kantio back to work. Wins will handle the catching duties in this one in the eighth spot in today’s lineup and he was a 10th round pick back in 2013. And that is out of play. just missed. Two balls, one strike. And it’s even up. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. swings through him for the K. Had him out front for strike three. I mean, there aren’t many curve balls in the sport today that break like that thing does. Huge movement. It’s so difficult to get on the same plane and even think about squaring it up, let alone get a piece and hope he throws something else to keep the atbat alive. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Denzel Clark. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Ball one. No strikes. One out. Base is empty. Cleveland in for a strike and now it’s even one and one. Gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one. Well, with Simmons, it’s not always your standard strike zone. Boog. It kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others, but I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent. So, you got to stay ready up there. Yeah. One of those umpires you just have to know what to expect, right? Exactly. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. Butler stands in with two away as he takes a ball. two outs. Breaking ball misses down and away. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. down to the dirt swing and a miss. Bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Two down on and that’s outside and it’s three and two. Jacob Wilson in the on deck circle for the A’s. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again up the middle. Sends it to first. The A’s go quietly. So they make short work of them there. Down to the bottom of the second. It’s the A’s three and a Guardians one here in Cleveland. And now it’s the switch hitter Carlos Santana. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. first offering and it just misses. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So when you have somebody so solid over there, uh you can breathe a little easier. And that one fouled off. Two-1 And that’s a little high. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times and he just handles them so well. So he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. fouls one away and now three and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. Remember Mark Katse is a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Bo Naylor at the plate now. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. misses inside. One and0. Right through there for a strike. Santana aboard here at first with nobody out. That one missing inside. Fouls it back with two strikes. struck him out. Luki, that was pretty nasty. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up and a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it’d be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. And now Anel Martinez. Fast for a strike. Man at first. One away. Well struck right field. That ball’s carrying and that ball is out of here. He leaves the yard to right, his second home run of the series, and it ties it up. It’s 33. That’s a great way to fire up this crowd. They’re feeling it now. When you have a team that hits home runs at such a high rate, they can get back in the ball game so quickly. That’s why that leadoff walk was extremely costly. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Jonathan Rodriguez digs in for the Guardians and the first pitch misses for ball one. Fly ball to right. Rooker puts it away for the out. And there are two down. Here’s Brian Rochio. And first off is fouled off. blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. Cleveland with a pair on this blast. We’re tied now at three apiece. You’re dialed into the show. And we’re back. Here’s the shorts stop at the plate. Jacob Wilson. The pitch. It’s been a rough start on the mound for this guy. This third inning so important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. Next offering is in for a strike. out to short. Roio whips it across. Lead off hitter gone in the third. Now that number 16. And now here is Nick Curts. Up and in. Ball one. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. Hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Tied up here in the early going. And that is downstairs and the count two and one. Swing and a highf fly ball. Well struck that one. Carry gone. A gigantic blast. Just like that. They move in front. It’s 43. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one. Boo, we knew it wasn’t coming back. The pitcher knew as soon as that ball left his fingertips, it was trouble. Right on a platter, right down the heart of the plate. I’m sorry, but big league hitters don’t miss that pitch. One out, base is empty. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. And that chops in for a strike. And that one in the air center field. He’s got it. There’s two away. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Two outs, base is empty. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. He’s 0 for one. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one. And another ball. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. That one is absolutely belted. And that gets down in the corner. Now he turns and heads for second. Not in time. It’s a double. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s Gioella, one for one with a single so far. That misses and that’s ball one. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. The lefty, the one, and that clips the inside corner. Movement in the bullpen. Slade Sone getting loose out there. Sabrowski, a left-hander, also throwing swing and a tapper that rolls foul. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Two outs and one at scoring position. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming man on second. Two down. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another. got him looking and he didn’t like the call. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Athletics four and the Guardians three. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the Cleveland leadoff hitter, Steven Quan. That one misses in the dirt. You know, these Guardians doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming and that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. Center field. Clark pulls it in and there’s one away. Now here’s Nolan Jones. He’s already homered in this game. And a foul ball. Next pitch misses and it’s a ball and a strike. Swinging a foul straight back. Pitch misses inside. Two and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And it remains two and two and delivers outside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. And that one lifted in the air center field. Two down. Now it’s Jose Ramirez. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Slice down the right side. Line drive. Nice grab. Guardians fail to score. Still down a run. It’s 4-3. A new pitcher in the game, Slade Sakone. Still pretty early in the ball game, so this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Now it’s the second baseman, Maxy. Struck out swinging his first time. in there at the knees and that is strike one. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. Fast ball for a strike. One and two. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. That’s off the inside corner. Three and two now. popped up first base side. Pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Austin. Next up for the A’s, Austin Wins struck out swinging his first time. That one laced to center and a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Waste no time there. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a T. Denzel Clark up next for the A’s. fought off foul. A’s leading by a run. Right through there for a strike. ball in the dirt but kept close. One ball, two strikes. Next pitch is outside. caught him looking for the K. He was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him look, that was just nasty. And next is the designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. One for two. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And a ground ball to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. The A’s strand one and it remains a 4-3 game. Back now at Progressive Field. Bottom four now. The four-hole hitter for the Guardians. Kyle Manzardo. Just missed. 10. Well, it was bumpy in the early going for the lefty, but he settled into a really nice groove. Next offering upstairs, two balls, one strike. Swinging a foul out of play. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. Here’s the 2-2. Battling here as he fouls it away. That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to play off some really close pitches and somehow Berg, he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Santana in the box now. Takes strike one. Oh, and one. Santana swinging a drive. this one deep. Feeling for the wall as he makes the catch. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. And next is the Guardians catcher. Bone Nailer went down on strikes his first time through. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. All one. One and one. Swinging a miss. And the count. One and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. in the air. Left field down the line. He’s got it. Two down. Anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians. He’s already homerred here in this one. the bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Okay, swing now. He had his mind made up. As soon as that ball left the hand of the pitcher, he was going to swing at it. Two outs. Late swing fouled off. Ball one there. That’s inside. Manardo off of first with two away. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And now two balls and two strikes. Fast ball is outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Jonathan Rodriguez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. So, no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on base. We played four. It’s the Athletics four and the Guardians three. We go to the top of the fifth. Digging in, Jacob Wilson. Wilson measures 6’2 in 22 years old. A former first round pick in 2023. Right down to shoot strike one. The shorts stop takes a ball. One and one. Here’s a swing and a line drive and a base hit to right field. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Yeah. The batter now, Nick Curts. Swung on. Belted. That one back. absolutely hammered it to left center. Another homer, his second home run of the game. And they add a pair. It’s 6-3. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive. And it paid off. Get as many high fives as possible. This guy’s a ball of energy right now and having the game of his life. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. Foul ball can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Fast ball in for a strike and it’s 0 and two. I think he was sitting off speed right there because he just let the fast ball go by. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning and we’re in the top of the fifth. This one in the air right field. Rodriguez sizes this one up, brings it in. One away. So digging in, Tyler Soderstrom. And a strike in there. Still only one out here in the inning. Hit on the ground to short. Roio slings to first in time. Now here’s Gio Urchel. Yeah, that’s too high. Pop foul out of play off to the right and a one-1 called strike right there. Now, just a submit mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it on the ground to third. Fires across the diamond and that is the inning. The A’s with a two-run blast. It’s now 63. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton and set to get us started. Bottom five, Jonathan Rodriguez. Springs back to work. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. JP Sears, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Lopez also throwing and now the one that one fouled off. Cold strike three on the fast ball and that ran back over the inner half. Oh, it’s a tough at bat right there. You go up trying to be aggressive, fall behind 02 in the count and then spit on one you think’s a ball only to get rung up. Probably a little too close to take though. Yeah, he had it right. Stack Cash showed that one missing the zone, but not by a lot. So, up next, Ryan Rochio. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Tap foul at the plate. Next offer is in for a strike. And that’s down and away. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Fouls it off. Still one and two. The shorts stop takes a ball. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. So two down now and here is Steven Quan for two in this one. Gets the slider in there for a strike up the middle and that chance handled. Throws to first. Guardians go down in order. Nothing doing for the Guardians there and they’re still doubled up. It’s six-3 back here in Cleveland. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six and here is Max Muny and that’s through there for a strike and it’s 0 and one. This one in the air center field. Jones makes the play and there’s one away. Austin wins up next for the A’s. on the outside corner for a strike. One and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. That’s towards center. Jones under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Two down. Base is empty. Denzel Clark up next for the A’s who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Just missed. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Cut on and lifted in the air. Rodriguez makes the catch and that’ll do it. Nothing doing for the offense that time. 234 do up in the home half of the six. It’s the A6 and the Guardians three. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, JP Sears. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. And up next for Cleveland, Nolan Jones. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boo. He didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here. Off the plate. And that’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Justin Sterner getting ready to go. Edo also getting ready. Hit in the air. Center field makes the grab. One down. Here’s Jose Ramirez singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Oh, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Hey, I got one ball, one strike. He swings and fouls one off. One down. Base is empty. That to right. And that’ll fall for a base hit. Kyle Mansardo digs in for the Guardians. He’s 0 for one. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Ramirez, the base runner at first with one out. Fouled off. He was late. In the air to left center, Soderstrom on the move to the alley, stretches out and hauls it in. Gotta love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. And now the first baseman, Carlos Santana. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Foul ball there. Two outs and they’ll do it again. Next offering is down low. This one in the air. Wins pulls that one down and that is the third out of the inning. One left for the Guardians and can’t cut into that 6-3 deficit. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Colobby Allard. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Lawrence Butler getting ready to hit. One for three. And first offering is fouled off. Swing and a ball driven out to center. That’s back there onto the tractor and he makes the catch. And now the short stop, Jacob Wilson. The emmo for him is contact. A guy who’s going to deliver average. Not a ton of power. He’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere. Well, that’s why it’s a team. And when you look at a lineup, he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate. One down, base is empty. Action in the pen down there. Kade Smith, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Seaw wall warming up as well. Liner snagged first. number 16. So, digging in, Nick Curts. He’s got a couple homers already, so can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit. And he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Well, he hasn’t gotten the result yet, but it’s got to feel pretty confident. Three foul balls in a row. He’s right on this guy. Up and in, and the count is one and two. And that’s in the dirt. grounds one to short in plenty of time to first and that is that nothing doing there for the A’s but they still lead it 6-3 we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Justin Sterner. He comes on for the 35th time this year. And now it’s going to be bone nailer. And Chris, his big strength is defense. But it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played, a good defensive catcher is considered differently. Whatever you get offensively is a bonus, but he’s got to put the fingers down. He’s got to present pitches to the umpire. They’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes. Outside low and the count even one and one. I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page. And that’s something that this guy does really well. Gets in sync with his pitchers. Boo. His preparation is off the charts. I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit. He’s so buried in that video room, it’s hard to get a chance to talk to him. Next offering down in the dirt. Two balls, two strikes. Gets a piece and stays alive. Now three and two stop center field. So he ends up with a hit after seeing a lot of pitches. That was a good at bat. That ball was blasted, Boo. And as broadcasters, we can go weeks without seeing a ball hit 115 m hour, which is what Statcast tells us there. Man, he really got the bat through the zone and did not get cheated. Yeah, that ball was absolutely smoked. Now it’s going to be Anel Martinez. First pitch just misses. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Naylor gets his lead at first with nobody out. Next offering is fouled back. Ball in the dirt and it gets away. No advance though. Ruer at first with no outs here and a foul ball. He stays alive. That one off the mark. Full countdown. Those first two hitters really making him work out there. Already 14 pitches this inning. Good played appearance there. able to take the walk and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Base knock and now a free pass. This has the makings of a big inning if they can get a couple more quality at bats. Now it’s the right fielder Jonathan Rodriguez and fouled off. That one misses and it’s one and one. Tying run at the plate in the dirt. Count moves to two and two as the runners hold. Swing and a miss and he struck him out. And that is a big first out. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Justin Sterner departs and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Jacob Lopez. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. So up next, Brian Rochio. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. The short stop takes the ball. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. rolled softly, but that goes foul. The tying run at the plate. Swing and a highf fly ball in the air. Left field calls it in. Two away. Oh, such a confidence boost for a reliever to come into the ball game and get the first hitter he faces. Just makes everything slow down a little bit and then from there can really settle in. Steven Quan stepping in now for a critical at bat. 0 for three in this one. And the first offering is not close. And that’s him for a strike. with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. Swaying at a ball popped up and that is the inning. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Paul Seawald just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now the right fielder Brent Rooker. on the ground of first. Santana throws the first in time. First out in the top of the eighth. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. And that one is inside ball one. And that’s through there for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. One down, base is empty. So a foul ball makes it one and two and Gary Simmons punches him out. That’s a strike out. Two outs, space is empty. Gio Shell to the plate. Yeah, that’s fouled off. The one swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Come on. Here we go. He goes down looking and one, two, three go the A’s as they’re unable to add to their 6-3 lead. And we’re back. Bottom of the eighth. And now Nolan Jones. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. on your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Lopez in his rookie season, 26 years old, and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Fouled off to the right instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended. Tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. swing and a popup. Muny gets under it and out number one on the grab. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Jacob Lopez done for the day. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Oswaldo Beo. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Jose Ramirez digs in for the Guardians. in first strike. It’s 0 and one. Some hitters are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. 0 and two now. knocks that one away and will do it again. The A’s leading by three here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Foul ball still 0 and two. And that one popped in the air left field and there’s two away. Now batting Kyle Manardo digs in for the Guardians. and ball strike. That one finds the zone. That is strike two. It’s amazing to look up and see 88 miles per hour on that change up. Back in the day, that’s a pretty good fast ball, but with high velocities these days, that speed differential is ah, that ends the inning. So, we take a break. So, they go quietly there. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the A6 and the Guardians three here in Cleveland. Here’s the second base, Maxy. Seaw wall back to work. That’s a little high and it’s one and0. Movement in the pen for the Guardians. Cade Smith appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. And that one is lifted in the air. Jones makes the grab. One away. Now that is catcher Austin. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Austin wins. A little bit high maybe. Ball one. Sliced hard but foul. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a miss. And it’s one and two. One ball, two misses. It’s a strike out. Oh, I think he was waiting on the change up right there and he got it. It just drifted too far in on him. I think that pitch is just a little more out over the plate. Probably squares it up, but instead he’s going to have to go take a seat on the ground. Martinez tosses to first and the inning is over. Nothing doing here this half. 56 and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the A6 and the Guardians three. Here comes the closer here in the ninth. Michael Lich a chance at his first save of the year. Number 20. Carlos Santana digs in for the Guardians. Carlos, that one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And that’s a little bit high. And there’s a foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Out to center. Clark under it, makes the catch, and there’s one gone. He’s two outs away. And here’s the catcher, bone nailer. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And that one clips the corner. No ball. Two strikes. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. The Athletics trying to close out a three-run lead here in the last half of inning number nine. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. got him swinging and they’re down to their last out. Sitting off speed there. Timing wasn’t quite right on the fast even to try to late emergency hack and foul it off, but very quality pitch located. I like that little two seam armside run to the outside corner of the plate and first offering is fouled off. They’re down to their final strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. One strike away. Pitch misses and a count one and two. That turns out to be a really good take right there, but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. The Guardians trailing by three. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Got him. And that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 6-3 our final score. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
