Players under pressure, new guys under the microscope, and we’ll tell you what are the weakest position groups on the Denver Broncos roster coming up on today’s episode of Locked on Broncos. You are Locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Broncos country, welcome in. We all blinked in the off season. It passed us by. Denver Broncos training camp begins with veterans reporting on July 22nd. And you know what that means? It means that football is officially back in the air. Welcome into today’s episode of Locked on Broncos. My name is Sarah Bettinger. I’m the co-host here at Locked On Broncos as well as the site expert at predominantly Orange.com. And here’s what you can expect on today’s episode of the show. We’re going to talk about some players under pressure entering training camp, including some recent draft picks who might already be on borrowed time. We’re going to talk about the most anticipated players going into Denver Broncos training camp. And I think it’s fair to say that that includes a list of the newest guys on the team, right? and we’re going to talk about the best and worst position groups on the team where the Broncos might actually be looking to add guys in case of injury or maybe just to upgrade their depth here as they get on the field and get underway because we know a general manager’s job is never really done. But welcome into today’s show which is brought to you by our friends over there at FanDuel. Right now, new customers at FanDuel can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. And we got to talk about players under pressure, players on the hot seat heading into Denver Broncos training camp. And there’s always going to be a lot, right? And when you ask the question, who are you looking forward to seeing going into training camp? I think it’s always interesting to hear everybody’s responses and let us know. you drop us a comment on YouTube, send us a message on social media. Let us know who you’re most excited about heading into training camp this year. But I think it’s also fair to say that we’re kind of just interested in getting everybody back out there and seeing which players are going to step up and we’re interested to see which guys we’re not even really considering or thinking about stepping up and making us interested in talking about them. But there are a lot of guys that are just inherently going to be under pressure entering camp because of a variety of reasons, right? We got jobs on the line. You got roles that they had last year that may be on the line because of new additions and potentially in some cases I think roster spots are in question. And so let’s start with the running back position right where Jal Mclofflin and Audrey Estame seemed to be battling it out for one roster spot heading into training camp. I think that at this point, unless the Broncos keep four or five backs, and that’s totally possible for them to do, it feels like only one of these guys is going to make the team because we haven’t seen a ton of either of them playing on special teams. Jal Mclofflin, in my opinion, is going to open up as the favorite to be on the roster over Audrey Esté. But at the same time, you kind of get the impression that with Esté being one of the youngest guys on the team that it would be foolish for the Broncos to give up on him, right? And unless there’s something behind the scenes that they see with Esté that they just really don’t like, it feels like he’s the one guy who offers that sort of power back to the roster, right? Other than JK Dobbins, who he creates yards after contact. He was very good last year in terms of breaking tackles. But if JK Dobbins suffers an injury, and history tells us that’s kind of an issue of his, right? It’s one of those situations where you just don’t want to be caught without a backup option in terms of somebody who can kind of take that beating that you oftentimes need running backs to take because Jalil Mclofflin was worse last year in every category compared to his rookie season where he played under 200 snaps and was super effective on the snaps that he did play. His yards per carry was down. His yards per reception was down. Yards per touch obviously as a result of that was down. And not only that, but yards before contact, yards after contact. Every metric that you can potentially even think of for Jal Mclofflin last year was worse in terms of an efficiency per touch rate. And I think that does have to matter going into this year because the Broncos set out on a journey in the 2025 off season to find that joker for the offense. And yes, Evan Ingram can play that role at tight end, but keeping in mind that maybe one of the biggest advantages that Jalil has is his ability to be sort of that scat back. You know, with the speed, he’s got the ability to make guys miss in space. you really wanted to see more of that last year and we just didn’t see enough of it, right? Not enough of a dynamic presence in the passing game in order to really count on him being a joker possibility going forward. So, I I don’t think Jal offers that Joker possibility. And I think because of that, he’s got to add value elsewhere. And we’ve discussed on this show previously that maybe special teams could be an area where he does add that value as a return specialist, which he’s done in the past and he’s done pretty well. So that could be an interesting factor in his favor. But for Esté, you really get the feeling that he has a huge opportunity before him because of JK Dobbins’s injury history. And because the front office and coaching staff are undoubtedly aware of that, it gives him an advantage because he does have that size that nobody else in the Broncos running back stable has. And to be able to stick your nose in there in pass protection, you’ve got to have some, you know, size to you. I mean, yeah, you might ask your smaller backs to do it on occasion, but you also want to protect them from those situations to where that’s not their full-time job, right? I mean, RJ Harvey at 5’8, you know, even though he’s over 200 lb, even though he’s kind of looking like Quadzilla out there already, you don’t want him always in pass protection. You want other guys doing that stuff. And he’ll have to step up and do it at times, right? He’s got to get better at that, no doubt. But for a guy like Estimate, that can be an area where he really takes over a role in 2025 is on third downs, not just as a pass catcher, but also protecting the quarterback. I think defensively you have a similar situation with Drew Sanders at the linebacker position. It just feels like there’s this tension between, okay, he’s got the potential, right? He’s got the potential to be this, but how long can we cling on to that potential? Well, the Broncos have not shown a willingness to really just get rid of draft picks early on in their contracts under George Payeyton and Shawn Payeyton as we’re seeing with a good percentage of the 2022 draft class still on the roster heading into training camp. But I think a guy like Drew Sanders is under pressure to prove that he can stay on the field, stay healthy, make plays when he’s on the field, and provide that added value, not just on special teams, but showing that you could be a factor defensively. We talk in the offseason about can he compete for a starting job. And now we’re about to finally see. I mean, get out there on the field and do your thing. You’re a former third round pick, a high third round pick, an all-American at Arkansas, somebody that this team feels can provide value as a pass rusher on third downs as well. So, there’s a lot to like about a guy like Drew Sanders, but to me, he’s on the hot seat this offseason. I don’t think he’s in danger of being cut. I think he provides enough value on special teams that that he’s not going to be getting cut. But what I do think is that he has a this year a chance to really prove, okay, this guy can be a part of our future plans because regardless if it’s Dre Green Law and Alex Singleton this year, the Broncos might be able to make an educated guess going into next off season to say, “Hey, we saw enough from Drew out there last year at training camp, last preeason, every day out there in practice to be able to bank on him being a starter in 2026, if not 2025. five. So, this is a very crucial training camp for a guy like Drew Sanders. And also, I would say Jaquin McMillan in the slot defensively. You got Jade Baron under contract late last week. The Broncos got him his four-year deal done. And so, you solidify that situation, but now you’ve got a competition going on for that nickel spot. And Jaquin McMillan has played at a high level the last couple of years. And yes, he gave up some plays last season, but I think you look at the last two years and what he’s done, especially considering he was an undrafted guy. I think he’s one of those guys that doesn’t get talked about a ton being in a contract year, really stepping up here at training camp and seizing his role over somebody like Jade Baron, who it’s kind of just assumed that Jade is going to come in and be one of the top five defensive backs on the team. of course, as a first round pick, as a top 20 pick. You hope that he can do that. But also, I wouldn’t write off Jaquan McMillan just yet. Although, I would say I do believe he is on the hot seat, firmly entering Denver Broncos training camp here in 2025. But not only do you have players on the hot seat, you got players under the microscope, right? Especially new additions to the team. So, we’re going to discuss that coming up next on today’s episode, Locked on Broncos. Today’s episode of Lockdown Broncos is brought to you by FanDuel. There are plenty of players under the microscope at Denver Broncos training camp and aside from quarterback Bo Nicks, we are focusing big time on the newest additions to the team. We’re excited to see all these guys out there on the field and what kind of impact they can make on a team that won 10 games last season and Broncos country. And you can sound off and just let us know your thoughts and what you’re excited about here for Denver Broncos training camp starting up this week. It’s going to be exciting to have the guys back out there on the field. And it’s going to be great to be able to see all the new additions out there soon. They’ll be in pads and we’re finally going to get our first look really at Dre Green Law. We’re going to get a look at JK Dobbins for the very first time. Of course, everyone is excited for these new additions because on paper, they make a team that won 10 games last year look like they could take a huge leap in 2025. And I think that these new additions are going to be crucial toward the Broncos actually making a run at the Kansas City Chiefs here in the AFC West. And so let’s start with what I believe is the most important guy offensively that this team added in 2025. That would be tight end Evan Ingram. Ingram is the missing piece for the Denver Broncos offense. Now, we’ve also talked about the fact that with Ingram’s injury history, and I think that it’s a bit overblown, right? last year had a couple of freak injuries that he dealt with, but before that he was kind of enjoying a long stretch of multiple years in a row without really having anything significant. I think the injuryprone label for Evan Ingram actually predates his time with Jacksonville. It goes all the way back to sort of early in his career with the New York Giants. So, let’s just kind of throw that out there now that perhaps the injuryprone label for Evan Ingram is a bit overblown um in terms of just the concern over him getting the amount of money that he did in free agency and the faith the Broncos are putting in him as a piece in their offense. And it’s not just a piece in the offense, it is the missing piece potentially of the offense, which last year we saw was lacking tremendously a threat over the middle of the field on a consistent basis. And that’s where Evan Ingram, who nearly set the NFL record among tight ends for receptions in a season, can play such a huge role. Not only can he sit down and beat zone coverage, not only is he good in the middle of the field, but he’s great after the catch. He’s excellent at the catch point. He’s a weapon in the red zone and we’re looking forward to seeing what kind of impact he can make as far as getting that chemistry going with Bo Nicks early on in training camp. And one thing that we heard from our good friend Ryan Edwards after mini camp, after OTAAS, is that it really felt like Ingram was working his way toward becoming the Denver Broncos easy button offensively. What does that mean? It means that when you need easy offense, you go to easy E. You go to Evan Ingram, right? And he’s that type of player that you can rely on. He’s got strong hands. He’s a veteran. He’s evolved in his game much more than what we would have seen or assumed about him back when he was young player with the Giants, right? When it was like, oh, he’s just a big slot receiver. Those types of things. He can work from the slot. He can work as a big slot. But I think we’re going to see a versatile role for him as as in he’s going to line up out wide. He’ll line up in line. We might see him in the back field. We’ll see him going in motion. I think we will see Evan Ingram as a focal point in this offense. But of course, early on in training camp and all throughout the offseason program, this guy has been under the microscope because if he does get injured, the Denver Broncos don’t really have anything that resembles even closely what he brings to the table elsewhere on the roster. And that’s what we’re going to talk about in the next segment on terms of roster weaknesses. Little uh spoiler there, but Evan Ingram is that type of guy that you really feel like he can elevate this offense to another level. Give you that easy button on, you know, early downs. You need a quick four yards, five yards, get the ball to Ingram. He’s got strong hands. He’s going to get open. He’s way more athletic than most linebackers and safeties trying to cover him. He’s way bigger than slot corners that’ll try to cover him. So, he does offer you that potential for easy offense. Now, defensively, the new addition that’s under the microscope for me is going to be and for everybody right in Broncos country is Dre Greenaw, the linebacker coming over from the San Francisco 49ers. And you just you look at last year’s defense for Denver, the biggest weakness over the course of the season was unquestionably the inside linebacker position, right? Because this team was shuffling guys all throughout the year and that led to communication issues. It led to tackling issues. It led to teams being able to bleed out the clock late in games because guys weren’t filling their gaps properly. You’ve upgraded that position so substantially with Dre Green Law that it can’t be overstated. However, Dre has obviously missed a lot of time over the last couple of years. Suffered the torn Achilles or the ruptured Achilles in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs and then came back last year only to appear in two games. I mean, it says a lot of folks are saying he played in two games. Well, he played 30 snaps in one game and he played four snaps in the other game before he was taken off the field and shut down for the rest of the year. So, with a pulled quad this off season, Dre is expected to be ready for training camp. He’s not on the PUP list. He’s not expected to even necessarily be held back at the start of training camp, although we’ll have to kind of wait and see on that one. But this guy being out on the field changes the dynamic of the Denver Broncos defense completely. He’s a tackling machine. He’s instinctive. He can play in coverage. He’s athletic. He does everything well at the linebacker position. And in my opinion, he gives the Denver Broncos one of the top 10 easily linebackers in the NFL if he’s fully healthy. And if Alex Singleton is healthy next to him, shoot, the Broncos might be cooking with gas out there at linebacker this year. and we didn’t even necessarily realize it or we were worried about nothing, right? But I think until we see this on the field, it’s fair to be a bit, you know, conservative with our optimism about linebacker. And I think the Broncos right there at that position group. We talked about Drew Sanders sort of being a wild card, being on the hot seat this year. Justin Cernod finally gives you some proven depth at the position, but doesn’t also inspire a ton of confidence long term. So, that’s where I think the Broncos are stuck between a rock and a hard place here is that they may have some short-term solutions, but do they have any long-term solutions at linebacker? That’s the question I think Dre Greenlaw and maybe Drew Sanders can help answer this off season. Also, defensively, the new additions that we’re looking at it, you focus in on a guy like Talanoa Huang. We hear a lot about his impact on the field and just how I think you want to see this guy do what he did in San Francisco, which is making it feel like you’ve got 12 players out there on the field at all times, right? That’s the kind of just tenacity that he has. The way that he attacks the football, the way that he creates turnovers, he’s kind of like the Tasmanian devil or the bat out of hell who just causes chaos simply by being out there on the field. quarterbacks are always looking for where Hufanga is and he somehow sneaks up on everybody no matter what. So really really excited to see what kind of impact he can make on the back end of this defense there with Brandon Jones who had a tremendous first season in Denver in 2024 as well. Offensively, once again to circle it back, new additions, JK Dobbins, what is he going to bring to the table for this Denver Broncos team? Is he going to look like the best running back out there or is he going to be really getting uh he’s is he going to have guys like RJ Harvey nipping at his heels, right? Because you figure that the rookie is going to play, but is it going to be a situation where Dobbins is clearly established as a top back on the team. I think we’ll find out pretty early in training camp just how much this team has faith in Dobbins. They signed him obviously to a one-year deal and they gave him some decent money as well. So, he does figure to be a major factor in the offense this coming season, but new additions all over the board are going to be in focus for the Denver Broncos as they open up training camp here in 2025. And you know what? There’s some strong positions on this roster. But there’s also some weak positions where the Broncos might have to look for additional depth in free agency or the waiver wire coming up. We’re going to tell you exactly what the weakest position groups are on this roster heading into 2025 training camp on today’s episode, Locked On Broncos. So, where will general manager George Payton look to be adding to this Denver Broncos roster as the team opens training camp? And where are the team’s weakest position groups? That’s exactly what we’re going to talk about here on today’s episode, Lockdown Broncos. But once again, want to say thank you to all of you that make us your first listen of the day every single day. We appreciate you so much for rocking with us, especially as the Denver Broncos get ready to open up training camp. And we’ve talked about how important Evan Ingram is to the offense. And what I think really can’t be overstated is the fact that this Denver Broncos team desperately needs to find depth at the tight end position. We hoped that last year it could be Lucas Croll emerging as one of those top receiving threats at the position. And while he did lead the team at tight end in receptions, it was only 19 catches. and we really didn’t see the fullness of his, I guess, skill set unlocked by the team last year. So, I feel like the Broncos could still use talent and depth at the tight end position. And it just so happens that an old friend, Noah Fant, was cut by the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks didn’t want to pay him his 8.5 million this year, so they just cut him. And um couldn’t trade him surprisingly, despite the fact that I feel like tight end position around the league is lacking for talent. Right. We just saw the Miami Dolphins bring Darren Waller out of retirement. So, it must have been a price thing with a guy like Noah Fant, but he’s got those dynamic abilities in the passing game to be the effective depth piece the Denver Broncos need. Now, will he agree to that? Will he agree to a significantly reduced role to come back to Denver? Because Adam Troutman’s going to play. Nate Atkins is probably going to play. This team’s going to keep Caleb Loner on the roster. I just don’t think that gives the Broncos the type of depth that they maybe want or need at the position. They’d be taking a leap of faith with especially Loner, but certainly with Nate Atkins to say that he can continue to emerge as a passcatching threat because he’s sort of that jack of all trades on the offense that we feel like maybe he can potentially be a fullback and, you know, kind of a guy that just floats around the formation depending on what you’re trying to do or what looks you’re trying to give a defense. So, he does have value in that regard, but as a pure pass catching option proven at the tight end position, Noah Fant would make a lot of sense for the Denver Broncos to add. I also would not be mad at the idea of potentially seeing what the Packers want for Luke Musgrave, who the Broncos really liked in the pre-draft process in 2023. He’s firmly stuck behind Tucker Craft on that depth chart there in Green Bay. So, that could be an interesting situation to monitor as well. What happens with him there? Is there a player for player type of deal that the Broncos could make with the Packers who are, you know, really bad at cornerback? Maybe there’s something there that the Broncos could look into. But either way, it just kind of feels like the Broncos are one injury away. Whether it’s Ingram or Troutman, they’re one injury away from being stuck in a really, really bad position at tight end. And this is the time when there’s still free agents sitting out there. When there’s talented guys still sitting out there, this is to the time to bring those guys in. And and I know it takes two to tango when it comes to all right, you want to bring in a guy like Noah Fant. He’s going to want a decent role. Like he’s going to want to go out there and catch some passes. He’s going to want to maybe if it’s a short-term deal, he’s going to want to hit free agency next year at the age of 28 and say, “I want to make as much money as possible.” Do the Broncos offer him the best opportunity to do that? That from that perspective, you can kind of see why teams don’t just go out and oh well, let’s let’s add Noah Fant. He would be great depth to our team. You got to consider the players situation there as well. But swinging a trade for somebody like Luke Musgrave could be an interesting option if the Broncos don’t go after more high-profile depth like a player of Noah Fance caliber. I think the linebacker position is another one that we’ve talked about. brings a lot of uncertainty for the Broncos. And again, linebacker play across the league is considered to be down. So maybe the Broncos are almost in an enviable position with even injury risk players like Alex Singleton and Dre Greenlaw. And then you have the proven depth now with Justin Cernad finally getting a chance to start on a regular basis last year and then a wild card and Drew Sanders. But certainly wouldn’t hurt the team to bring in additional depth. We’ve seen them bring in tryyout players at the linebacker position. They’ve got undrafted guys fighting for spots and so we’ll kind of see what happens there. Also, the Denver Broncos are opening training camp with just one player on the PUP and that is going to be wide receiver at Perry. And to me, and I think to a lot of fans in Broncos country, that is one of the most disappointing pieces of news possible because at Perry was really one of the only wildcard options at wide receiver that you felt could truly contend for a 53man roster spot. Now, I know Shawn Payeyton has warned against the idea of sort of counting our chickens before they hatch with the roster. Maybe somebody like Michael Bandy can finally crack the 53 this year. But to me, it just feels like the Broncos have a clear top six. That pecking order at receiver with Courtland Sutton, Devon Veillay, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, and then special teams ace Trent Sherfield. It feels like they have an absolutely established top six. So, you need somebody with a combination of talent, a little bit of experience, maybe athletic traits, all those sorts of things to be a wildcard factor at that position and maybe force the team to make a tough decision on the final roster. And at Perry was one of the only guys, if not the only guy, barring a breakout from one of these undrafted players the Broncos brought in, which is entirely possible. You never know what can happen at training camp. young guys, unheralded guys, undrafted guys. They step up all the time. But that wide receiver position is one where maybe the Broncos get a look at some of these young guys at camp. They suffer an injury. We know Vle already has missed some time this off season and obviously Perry’s on the PUP. Maybe they say we need to raise the floor at camp. We need to bring in an established guy. Maybe receiver is one position where they look to do that. But the youth movement continues on for the Broncos at this point in time. So, those to me are those position groups on the roster where you could say either the weakest or least proven at this point. Tight end, linebacker, wide receiver. Everything else though feels really good going into training camp, doesn’t it? I mean, your running back position has a number of guys that you’re intrigued by. Uh, the offensive line and the defensive line, they are the two strongest units on the team. Edge rushers, you feel really good about that group of guys. corners, probably the best cornerback room in the entire NFL. And then safeties, you have so many different guys competing for roster spots who have played significant uh football at the NFL level. So, there’s a lot to watch for obviously at Denver Broncos training camp. We’ll be keeping tabs on as many of these situations as we possibly can, Broncos country, and we’ll be reacting to the veterans reporting to Denver Broncos training camp on July 22nd. What is Shawn Payeyton saying about the state of this roster? How is everybody’s time off? How are we looking ahead at this upcoming season? And who’s going to start standing out early on at Denver Broncos training camp? We’ll be breaking it all down so don’t miss a single episode of the show. Subscribe if you haven’t already done so. Great job Sayre😊enjoy your day❤very appreciative 🎉locked on BRONCOS a must first listen of the day DB4L
Let's BO 🎉🎉 AFC CHAMPS THIS SEASON
I have to be honest, I'm looking forward to seeing our new offense.
I really want to see Bo this year with all of his new toys.
Im most excited to see RJ Harvey
I think safety is one of the weakest as far as depth behind Hufanga.
Excellent commentary without so much chatter.
I don't want summer over yet but boy am I ready for football this year
Great solo show Sayre! Have a blessed week
At the end of the day I want the best 53, and hopefully camp and preseason define that roster. Theres going to be some surprises I think, but we need to win the West and host at least one playoff game
I know it’s in-division, but I’d love to know the price on Michael Mayer. Still only 24, and very underrated imo.
Harvey and Mims can do what Jaleel does but better. Estime is pure power keep him easily
every Broncos Channel: "this is Sean's Joker, this guy could be a Joker, is this the Joker, joker, joker, joker". so tired of hearing the term. there are multi-threat players and there have always been, quit acting like just because Sean said the word joker that the idea of a multi-threat player is a new concept, joker
