MLB LIVE🔴 Detroit Tigers vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 21, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

from the home of the Pirates. We’re at beautiful PNC Park. Inner League Baseball on MLB The Show. It’s the Detroit Tigers going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. First pitch coming your way next. And now [Music] Pirates about to get started here. And today’s starter, Mitch Keller. And for some reason, he’s not quite as effective here in front of his home crowd. Chris. Yeah, Boo. And the fans are well aware of that. For him, he’s got to just not press and go out there and say, “Hey, I’m just treating this like any start. Home, on the road, it doesn’t matter. My job is to focus on that catcher mit, attack hitters, and just try to move through a ball game. So, if he can find that kind of focus, doesn’t matter where he’s pitching because he has good enough stuff to go out there and win a ball game. And a foul ball. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And the count is 0 and2. The short stop takes the ball. O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. Good job to fight that one off. Stick him out looking. Here’s Glabber Torres in there and it’s 0 and one. [Music] The wine to kick the pitch and the sweeper is off the plate. One out. Base is empty. Next offering is in the dirt. [Music] Chop back up the middle. Gonzalez. The throw to first. Two quick outs in the top of the first here tonight. Let’s take a check of the Tigers lineup. This has been a good, productive lineup so far this year. Currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boog. I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing going for the fences. But if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. You get more guys on base and then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. Swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can forget it. He muscles that one out the opposite way. He’s up to three home runs in the series. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. There was a cutter away. Kind of works like a slider. You got to stay on it. Let it travel a little bit and then get your arms extended. Really good piece of hitting right there. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Spencer Torqulson. Foul ball. Two outs. Base is empty. And that one fouled off. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two and ball one. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Solo shot for Detroit this inning. It’s now one- nothing. Back after this on the show. Back here in Pittsburgh and starting this one, Jack Flareity. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trusted, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Spencer Horowitz, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Slapped [Music] hard the other way, but fouled. [Music] Just missed. gets the top of the zone for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Next offering way off the plate. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Pretty good spot on the outside, but just couldn’t quite clip the zone. That’s a stone cold take. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. And he swings and misses at the initial offering. [Music] and the pitch is outside. Ball one. One. Horowitz aboard here at first with nobody out. That misses the zone. Two and one. [Music] And a foul ball. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Music] The pitch to McCutchen swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. And there’s one down. Here’s a Pirates lineup now. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Krian Hayes. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Brian Reyn stands in now and watches strike one. out to short. Keith to second and he pulls the short stop off the bag. First and second, one out. And stepping in is the speedy Nick Gonzalez. Fast for a strike. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. One out. Runners at first and second. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Double play ball to second. There’s one throw to first, but he beat it. Here’s Tommy Fam. In the grand scheme of things, this at bat might not feel important because it’s early, but it could create a domino effect for things to come. Control what you can here and have a strong at bat. And that one fouled off. Runners on first and third. Two away. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Just a bit late on that 01 breaking ball. 02 hole. Now he’s going to have to shorten up, tighten things up if he’s going to have a good at bat. And that’s off the inside edge. Now one and two. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Full count in the dirt. Blocked the tag and got him. It’s second. Bang bang play and the inning is over. So one left for Pittsburgh. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. Back here at PNC Park. And now the catcher comes up to him, Dylan Dingler. Keller back to work. Ball one there. And there’s the strike. Woody Keller making the calls behind home for us today. And Boo, something to keep an eye on is how pitchers utilize the top part of the strike zone. We see a lot more of that in today’s game with pitchers going up there with hard stuff. Keller definitely an umpire that isn’t afraid to call strikes up in that part of the strike zone. To the right side, Gonzalez to first in time and quickly one away in the second. Zack. Zack McKinstry the next to hit. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris That one fouled off. [Music] The 01. That’s hard hit on the line. Makes the grab. Two down. Mattling. Two down. Base is empty. Matt Verling up now for the Tigers. popped up to the left into foul ground. Hayes sizes this one up, makes the catch and that is that. Nothing across here this half. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Tigers one and the Pirates nothing. Bottom of the second at the plate for Pittsburgh. Tommy Fan first pitch and he just misses on the ground right side. He’ll do it himself. One up, one down. Jackinski. Jack Sinski, the next pirate to hit. Slider for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Swinging a foul straight back. 0 and two now. And a swing and a miss. Two away. Well, classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out. That fast ball on the pitch before was up. It was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder, but then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and you can’t make contact. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two outs. No, good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That’s inside. The right-hander gives up the two out walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Two outs, runner at first. Henry Davis now at the plate. fouled off down the right side. Pittsburgh that one back up the middle and it gets through. Ruer puts on the brakes at second. So, it’s first and second with two out. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. First and second, two outs. Here is Isaiah Kinder Fa. Really strong hitting performance recently. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. Now just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s going to be Parker Meadows. Come on. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Got him swinging. Quick three pitch strike out. And you look at the sequence, the plan was clearly to work him inside. Didn’t want to let him get his arms extended, make him a little bit uncomfortable in there, and he ended up overmatching him in the process. That’s one you have to take note of as a hitter for next time you come to the plate. Bobby Bayz digs in right side. There’s the strike. Bayz measures 6 feet even 32 years old a former first round pick back in 2011 and he’ll one deep drive down the line foul ball he was ready for that fast ball right there really turned on it hit it hard the distance but just too much hook to it so might want to make a little bit an adjustment. Let it travel a little more and see if you can keep that thing fair. One down, base is empty. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Back to the top of the lineup. And up next for Detroit, Colt Keith. He was a strikeout victim his first time. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. That misses off the outside edge. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. The short stop takes a ball and now it’s even up. That’s to third. Over to first and the Tigers retired. One, two, three. Tigers are shut down there, but they lead it one to nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the bottom of the third. And now the Pirates leadoff man Spencer Horowitz. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and0. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire in the air. Pretty deep out to center field. Hauls it in for the next. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. He’s 0 for one. top of the zone for a called strike. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Outside one and one, one swing and a miss. One, two. [Music] That misses the zone and it’s two and two. Two balls, two strikes, and downstairs. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] Got him. That K is his third of the game. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center and he makes the catch. That is the inning. Back here in Pittsburgh now, the number two hitter, Glabber Torres. to the right side. Slings to first and Glabber Torres retired. Tigers left. Here’s Riley Green. He’s already homerred here in this one. Boo. One really cool moment I remember at PNC Park is the 2006 home run derby during Allstar weekend. David Ortiz and Ryan Howard each hit homers into the Alageney River on the fly. Really awesome to watch. There’s the strike. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an offspe pitch on this next one. Next offering way upstairs. Cut out and miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. And next up for the Tigers, Spencer Torqulson. Struck out swinging his first time. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. And that misses off the outside edge. Next one is off the plate. And now two balls and two strikes. Puts it in the air out towards left center. And that’ll do it. back here at PNC Park. Ready to go. Bottom four at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick Gonzalez. Yeah, that’s fouled off. The 01. That one lifted to left dives and he can’t hang on. So, a man on base to start the inning. Anything but pretty right there, but he’ll take it every time. He’ll take those boop hits off the end of the bat all day long. It doesn’t mean you put a great swing on it, but hitters deserve to get a lucky hit every now and then. And now let’s see if they force some action with There goes the runner swing and a miss. Throw to second. And the tying run is now in scoring position. That was close, but Stackcast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts. Chris. Yeah, you see that plus speed and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag. Such a threat on the bases. Misses inside and the count even one and one. Gonzalez stands at second with no outs. [Music] And that one fouled off. Squirts away a little bit. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Jack Sinski in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. tying run and scoring position. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one down the line to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Tough play and a nice backhand stop. had to be perfect with the exchange and throw to get the out, but it looked like he had to dig in there a little deeper, like he was trying to get a split finger grip or something. Close play, but that little extra time on the transfer made all the difference. Jack Sinski, the next pirate to him, struck out swinging his first time. fought off foul. [Music] Pitch is in there and the count is 0 and two. No ball. Two strikes. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And that is a big first out. Ke Ryan Hayes, the next pirate to hit, worked to walk in his first trip to the plate. Fast for a strike. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Two on, one out. That one just misses. One and two count. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Next offering way off the plate. [Music] swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Here’s the Pirates catcher now. Henry Davis, one for one with a single so far. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Downing ball here. Rolls foul. Two on, two outs. In for a strike. And now just one pitch away from surviving the inning. Foul ball still 0 and two. inside just missed. Really good take especially with two strikes and a foul ball. He stays alive. Two aboard, two outs. Now one out to right and that is the inning. Pirates strand a couple. They trail here one- nothing. Ready now for the fifth inning. Leading off Dylan Dingler. Keller back to work. That’s in for a strike. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Throw is high and over his head. Doesn’t get too far away. So, no one moves up. Well, it’s been a struggle on offense for them in this one. So, maybe that wakes him up a little bit, you know. An error can certainly give the opposing lineup something to get excited about. You got somebody on base. So, we’ll see if they can make something of it. Zack McKinstry up now for the Tigers. 0 for one so far. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just kept it simple. played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. First and second, no outs. Verland digs in now. 0 for one with a fly out. That one a little bit high. One and0. First and second, no outs. And we’re in the top of the fifth. just missed. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied them up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Next, Alford in there for a strike. Two balls, two strikes, [Music] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Just off the outside part of the plate. That’s a really good take. First and second here. No outs. Foul ball and it remains a full count. And that one hit to first and foul ball. Got him. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. Struck out swinging his first time. Ball one, no strikes. And there’s the strike [Music] and a count one and two. Runners at first and second with one gone. Two-2. [Music] That one not close. Ball three. Javier Bayz waiting to hit for Detroit. Drilled in the air. High and deep right field. That one carrying caught just shy of the wall. Tangs up from second and he’ll head to third. Excellent play out there and he does it in a huge spot. That wall, it can very easily jar the ball loose when you bang into it. So that could have been a really different outcome. Here’s Bayz. There’s the strike up high and it’s 0 and one. Now it’s Belton deep to left. Way out of here. Home run. A three-run homer. His 11th of the year. And they add to the lead. It’s 4 nothing. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments and right there made a statement big time. So many times a sinker inside is a foul ball off the ankle for the batter, but that time he did a really nice job of staying inside the pitch and getting through it. Now a chance for Colt Heath for two in this one. And that’s through there for a strike. One swing and a miss. Looked off balance that time. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Carmen Majinski loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. He also getting ready. Two down. Nobody on. The shorts stop takes a ball. Ripped on a line. Sinsky makes the catch in and over. Three-run shot for the Tigers. It’s now a four nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Isaiah Connor Falefa up to the platefa and first offering is fouled off. You know these Pirates looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on. But it just hasn’t happened for him yet. They only have one hit with runners in scoring position. So a lot of squandered opportunities. It’s tough because those are moments you just can’t get back. Next offering is in for a strike. Now a blooper back behind short takes it in for the outer. So the Pirates batting order turns over and here’s the first baseman Spencer Horowitz. First pitch just misses. One ball, no strikes. And that drops in for a strike. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. And it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Andrew. Two out. Base is empty. Here’s McCutchen. Line drive. Green makes the catch and that’ll do it. Bucks go down quietly. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. Pirates with a new arm on the mound. Carmen Majinski. He last pitched two days ago. Here is Glabber Torres. He’s grounded out a couple of times. And there’s a foul ball. Torres goes 6’1, 205 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. That one ripped back there. That one is gone. He’ll touch them all and they add on. It’s five zip. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. So, Singy, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives going over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball. get out of the ballpark for him. It’s kind of a mistake, but you know what? When you have such a good approach, every now and then you’re going to run into one. Digging in, Riley Green. Next offering is fouled back. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Up and in at the count one and two. Straighten them up a little bit. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Run on the move. Swing and a miss. Throw to second tag and they got him. Gosh, that’s just a terrible jump right there on first base. It really cost him and it wasn’t even a great throw, but it still allowed him to slap the tag on him just in time. Boogie looked like it was you running or something. When you get off the blocks that poorly, you’ve got to be willing to shut it down and get back to first. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike and it’s nothing in two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Swings and misses the high heat. Too much on that one. Well, a pretty big contrast in that at bat. first couple of pitches down in the zone. And those are competitive pitches, so you have to respect it as a hitter and then with two strikes ran that fast ball by him up high and there was just no catching up. Dingler up for the third time and takes ball one. Action in the pen down there. Number 47 appears to be getting loose. Haney also throwing the one inside. Just missed. He swings and fouls one off. Next offering upstairs 3-1 that catches the corner. Cole Knight tonight. And that’s a pretty firm fast right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. Got him looking for the strike out. Basketball the letters frozen for strike three. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further and the lead is now 5 nothing. And we’re back. John Shabi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Brian Reynolds. That one misses. Ball one. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. A one two count. And all he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. outside low. Two and two. Two ball. Two strikes. And they’ll do it again. [Music] Tap back to the mound and they take care of Reynolds for the out. second base. Now it’s the second base Nick Gonzalez one for two. Just missed. One ball. No strike. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. One down. Base is empty. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. No, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Fam stands in with two away as he takes a ball. [Music] swinging a foul out of play. And now the count one and two after the swing in the miss. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider. And he got him. Strike three. And that’ll retire the side. And one, two, three go the Pirates. It’s 5 nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top of inning number seven and the batter now, Zack McKinstry. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. The 20 is in for a strike. What about a playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a move during a game, it’ surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Two now. That’s down and in. Detroit and a ground ball to first. Horowitz steps on the bag and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. And next to hit for Detroit, Matt Verling. Base hit center field. [Music] And up next for Detroit, Parker Meadows misses off the plate. Ball one. One ball, no strikes. right through there for a strike. Pirates on the ground and that one finds its way through and out to a board to third. Tag got him. Well, it’s always a risk when you’re pushing for third like that. A bang bang play. Had a chance to make it. Maybe a little better slide around the tag, but a nice job by the defense to cut off that runner. So man aboard Javier Bayz up now for the Tigers. Top of the zone for a strike. 0 and one. And a foul ball. Meadows off of first with two away. Next offering upstairs. One ball, two strikes. That one missing inside. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Next pitch is outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Swing and a miss at 96. Struck him out. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So, it’s no runs on two base hits, no errors, and one man left. Midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Tigers five and the Pirates nothing. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Reese Olsen. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. And now the center fielder, Jack Sinski, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Pick and bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. Next pitch misses way outside. And that’s outside. Tap foul at the plate. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Oh, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Pay in the box now. No balls in a strike. Movement in the bullpen. Chase Lee getting loose for AJ Hinch. And it’s fouled away. Nobody out. Runner at first. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. checks going to the 02. Appeal to first. Did not go. Little trouble with this one behind the plate. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. And now a man into scoring position. This is something that’ll happen to him from time to time behind the dish. The defense is a part of his game. He’s trying to improve, but right there just couldn’t squeeze it and it cost him into center and a base hit. Solinski around third. He will score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 5-1. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole. I believe very good at bat with two strikes. Man at first, nobody out. And here’s the catcher, Henry Davis. Get on base here and keep building off this momentum. They’re getting closer, but they still got some work to do now. These guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. One on, nobody out. A run in here. The bottom of the seventh. Two balls, no strikes to count. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher’s afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Next pitch is downstairs. No strike. And there’s the automatic. Rudder at first with no outs here. That one’s in there and it’s three and two. Full count and ball four, two aboard. Oh, now he’s got two runners on after that walk and things can get out of hand in a hurry in these situations. So he’s going to have to find a way to get back into the strike zone. First and second, no outs. And now the shorts stop. Isaiah Ker Falefa. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two hawks in the inning already. And he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. No outs. Runners at first and second. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate and a swing and a miss down on strikes and that’s the first out. Typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone a hitter if he’s prepared for it can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s Torlson over to second for one return throw to first. Got him double play and that’ll do it. So it may be too little too late but they’re on the board here in the late going. It’s now 51. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Andrew Heene. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. And here’s the Tiger leadoff man, Colt Keith. 0 for three in this one. started after it. Appeal to third and he went around. That’s ruled the swing. Lifted in the air right center field. Sinsky on his way over. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. just missed. [Music] And another ball that clips a corner. Back to back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. High in the air out to right. Reynolds trying to get there. Two away. And next up for the Tigers, Riley Green. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boo. He didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here. up the middle dives but it kicks off his glove. No throw and he reaches safely. Tigers. Now here’s the Tigers cleanup hitter Spencer Torqulson. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. And first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Breaking ball inside. One ball, one strike. just missed. Two-1. That one missed. swings and misses. Now three and two. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. [Applause] That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast ball. First and second, two outs. Here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler. First off, spring and it just misses. Green the lead runner out at second. Torqulson on first with two down on the ground to the left and it goes just foul. The 1-1 is fouled off in the dirt to third. Tag. Got him. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. Tigers leave one. They’re up 5-1. Ready for the bottom of the eighth at the plate. Andrew McCutchen. Olsen back to work. Pitches in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Tigers bullpen with some action. Chase Lee getting loose for AJ Hinch. Kanley getting cranked up as well. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike’s over. Seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Reynolds at the plate now. That’s ball one. Foul ball there. The Pirates down by four near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Started to go to one, two, a check on it to third and he held up. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Well, he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pulled the string on the change up. Well, you see him trying to pull that inside pitch right there. And that’s not the kind of approach that you want to have. Even if you do get to it, it’s going to be very difficult to keep it fair. You’re just going to make it a long strike at best. You have to be able to stay within the baseball on the inside of that path to it. And that way, if you’re a little quick, the ball gets hit hard somewhere and it’s not foul. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Nick Gonzalez. One for three. And he hits a ground ball right side and that’s just foul. Here’s your one. One upstairs. Next offering is downstairs. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count on the ground right side and foul ball. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. Number 47 takes over on the mound. He’s pitching on two days rest. And now the catcher comes up to him. Dylan Dingler. Swinging a miss on one. No ball, one strike. They say you win. [Applause] Swang and a miss. Stuck him out and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, that seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. McKinstream batting with one down takes a strike. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Johan Ramirez loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Bednar a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Fly ball pretty well struck right field. ranging back and caught on the warning track. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. The in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Ground ball scooped up. Key Brian Hayes throws across the diamond and that is that. No runs, no hits, no errors. 5, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Tigers five and the Pirates one. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Tommy Canley. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Here’s the left fielder, Tommy Fan. Leftiel Tommy. [Music] That’s in there. Strike one. Kanley in his 10th season. He features a change up, a fourseamer, a slider, and he works in a sinker. Next pitch downstairs, and it’s a ball and a strike. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Battling here as he fouls it away. The two and there’s a ball. bows it back with two strikes. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. So, a man at first. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Jack Sinski, a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. One ball, no strike. And that one wrapped foul. Fam gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Not close with that one. Two and one. That one ripped right center field way back there. and out of here. [Music] That’ll fire up the dugout. His second homer this series. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 53. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. The pitcher knew as soon as that ball left his fingertips, it was trouble. Right on a platter, right down the heart of the plate. I’m sorry, but big league hitters don’t miss that pitch. So, digging in, Kebran Hayes. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Makes the catch up against the wall in foul territory. Henry, here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Tommy Canley will depart. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Will Vest comes on trying to close it out. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Henry Davis, the next pirate to hit. That’s out to center field. Two down. Now that last chance now for the Pirates and the batter will be the shortstop Isaiah Ker Falefa. You got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base, turn this lineup over so the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off. And that misses and it’s one and0. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. And the slider just misses and that drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Two down. Nobody on. Just missed. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in here in the last half of inning number nine. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. This could end it. Lifted to left and that should do it. And that is the ball game. Well, M, four games wasn’t too long of a losing streak, but they’re definitely happy to be back in the win column. Now, you can turn things around, get on the right track, and probably start a winning streak from here. A 53 final score in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB The Show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
