CHICAGO WHITE SOX vs TAMPA BAY RAYS (JULY 22 2025) WHITE SOX vs RAYS MLB GAME – MLB THE SHOW 25
It’s the Chicago White Socks taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set to go. And on the mound in this one, Ryan Pepio. What do you have on him? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. [Applause] fought off foul one and strike two strikes. swing and a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Austin Slater stands in right through there for a strike. [Applause] Back to the mound. It hit him to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Catcher coming out to check on him. It looked like it got him on his back leg. So, you’ll wonder if that might be a problem for him in terms of pushing off the rubber. Yeah, it’s a great point. And we’ll have to see how he looks, but to me it appears he’s moving pretty well. I think it’s just going to sting for a while, but hopefully nothing more. First and second, no outs. Edgar Caro steps to the plate for the White Socks. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 [Applause] on the ground. Right side down the line and it’s fouled. My draw the lead runner at second. Slater on out of first with nobody out. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Just missing there. One and two to count. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. squirts away a little bit. Nothing happening on the bases though. Got him swinging. And that is a big first down. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off the two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. [Applause] And next to hit for the Socks, Miguel Vargas. [Applause] And that’s in there for strike one. Runners at first and second with one gone. [Applause] There’s the strike, man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low end fast for some pitchers. [Applause] And now one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] Upstairs. That one misses. And now it’s filled up. Three and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. One out. Runners at first and second. Foul ball. And it remains a full count. [Applause] Strike three. And that’s two in a row. It’s a strike out, but they’ll be in good shape if they make their outs as difficult as that one. Those grinding abs take a toll on the pitch as the game goes on. [Applause] Here’s Mike Tman. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. lifted in the air down the left side. Walls makes the play and that’ll do it. White Sox strand a couple and now the Rays will get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Tropicana Field and on the hill, Aaron Savali and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Here’s a high chopper. Vargas steps on first for the All right, let’s take a look at the Rays lineup. a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Taylor Walls. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Hassan Kim in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Next pitch is outside. One out. Base is empty. And that one’s a little bit high. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] That finds the mark on the inside corner. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. That to right flying after this one. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it safely into second. He’s got a double. One out, runner at second. And now the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. bull. That’s just out. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. [Music] Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield heading to the plate now. A long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in and it’s one- nothing. I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. runner on at first with one gone. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Junior Camero. [Music] [Applause] Ball two. [Music] [Applause] Sliced hard but foul. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Just missed. [Applause] And ball four to a board. Christopher. First and second, one out. Morell the next to hit. Ground ball left side. Could be two. Quick feed to South for one and that’s two. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s an early one- nothing lead. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now in Tampa Bay. Here’s the center fielder, Luis Robert Jr. Robert, the native of Cuba, signed with the White Socks in May of 2017. The first offering a fast ball for a strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Caviierro, [Applause] one out. [Applause] And here is Sosa to the plate. Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average, but one of the things in today’s game, the value in the fact that he hits both righties and lefties, slice the other way and foul. They’re so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris, and it’s huge when you don’t have to sit a guy or platoon them. When you can hit, you know, both sides in terms of pitchers arms, you’re a guy that it’s hard to take out of the light up. And I think it’s very important today when everything is under the microscope. Swing and a miss as he is out front. One two [Applause] line drive. They’ve got it for out number two. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Coulson Montgomery stands in with two away as he takes a ball and that one clips the corner. That’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, it should be a good outing for him. Next offering misses. Now two balls in a strike. Ripped on the ground to second and the White Socks go quietly. Nothing doing for the White Socks. They trail here one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Jake Mangum. Mangum. Mangum getting the start in right. 29 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019. Takes it in for the out. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Now it’s Chance in the head. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. Brings it in. And there’s two away. Third base. Two out. Space is empty. And now it’s going to be Jose Caviierro. That just misses and it’s one and0. Two out. Space is empty. Close but called a ball. Ball two. softly hit back behind third and foul ball. cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. Rays go in order 1, two, three, but they lead it one to nothing. New inning getting started. Here’s the veteran outfielder Michael A. Taylor Pepio back to work. Ball one and a pitch inside. [Music] Ball two. And a foul ball. makes the count. Two and one. And there’s a ball. One strike. Fast ball for a strike. You got a full count. That one misses. So a lead off walk [Applause] back to the top of the White Sox lineup. Stepping in the White Socks leadoff man Chase Maid. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single in the air on the infield. Diaz moves under it, makes the grab, one down. Oh, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Austin Slater steps to the plate for the White Socks. Reached on an infield single his first time. Just missed. 10. Taylor stands at first with one out. That one finds the zone and it’s one and one. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. puts it away from the eye. [Applause] Here’s the catcher, Edgar Caro. [Applause] Pickoff move to first and he’s back in safely. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Oh, and one. [Applause] Oh, that’s off the plate. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Swing and a miss. Strike him out and pay his third of the game. So, one left for the White Socks. They’re down one- nothing. And we’re back. Set for the bottom of the third. And stepping in for the Rays, Taylor Walls. [Applause] Little Chopper rolls. Foul [Applause] now. [Applause] swings through that one for strike two. One ball, two strikes. That’s ripped and this one could be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. The throw in. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now the center fielder grounded out his first time. That’s off the mark. One and0. [Applause] And a pitch. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third. This one chopped on the ground but fouled. just misses with that one. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. Off the mark there. Three balls, two strikes. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. And ball four, two aboard. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Now the number two hitter, Hassan Kim, doubled his first time up. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Just off the inside edge. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Music] That puts the corner. One and one. Outside low and it’s two in one. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. That one misses and the count is three and one. Foul ball there [Music] on the ground. The second might be two. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. That was a productive at bat. You know you’re doing something right anytime you help move two runners into scoring position and give your team a chance to drive in a few runs, even if it’s still kind of early in the game. Yandi Diaz now singled and drove in a run his first time through. Ripped to third. Slings to first in time. So now the DH spot. Junior Camroero walked his first time in there and it’s 0 and one. Second and third, two down. [Applause] Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. 0 and2 now and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two on, two outs, and ball one. Two straight. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. this to third in plenty of time to first. That’s the inning. So they strand a pair. Three innings complete. It’s the Rays one and the White Socks nothing. Back here at Tropicana Field. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Miguel Vargas. Swinging a miss as he was late. You know, these White Socks as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. Fast ball is outside. The one two knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. That one missed. Three and two. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the laid-off walk. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. That one hit to right. Mangum squeezes it and there’s one away. And up next for Chicago, Mike Tman. He’s 0 for one. Swinging a foul out of play. White Socks down a run. liner and this could be trouble around first heading for two and the tying runs at second base with a double. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. One out, runner at second. Now Luis Robert Jr. Grounded out his first time up. And that drops in for a strike. Oh, and one. [Applause] The delivery to Robert and a breaking ball misses outside and a count one and two. This one popped up. found ground first base side. Two lay down. [Applause] Now it’s going to be Lennin Sosa. 0 for one so far. And the first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Applause] a little out front there as he swings through. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] White Socks down a run. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Field two. All one person misses. It’s a strike out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Bottom four now the left fielder Christopher Morell [Music] turned on but foul wide of third. Well, these Rays doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. [Music] Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt onto first. Gets him one away on a drop third strike. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Jake Mangum. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one inside. Two and0. And another ball. [Applause] and he takes a strike. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. And it’s through for a hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. [Music] Danny Jansen ahead here. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Check swing called strike. Mangum leads off first with one away. The 1-1 is fouled off. Here’s a one, two. Had a good eye there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Cut out and miss. Curve ball struck him out. Now up for Tampa Bay. Jos Caviierro struck out swinging his first time. Rudder takes off. Pitch misses. Chris, his wheels were the difference maker on that play. Just got in there. Yeah, with Statcast’s help, we see his top speed on this stolen base. And that’s a big number. I mean, man, he really made his athleticism work for him on that one. Swag and a miss and the count one at one. I got a ball. One runner at second. Two down. [Applause] Riner base hit round third headed to the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single. It’s two nothing. Good two strike hitting right there, B. A bit of a lost start for S. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Runner at first with two away. Taylor Walls now at the plate. Checks over to first. Back safely. Runner on the move. Pitching for a strike. Throw to second. Out there. And the inning is over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Ready now for the fifth inning. Now the third baseman, Coulson Montgomery. And that’s off the inside edge. And that is ball one. There’s the strike. [Applause] and he grounds one to the right side. Kim handles, throws to first and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Here’s the left fielder, Michael A. Taylor worked a walk in his first trip to the plate and a foul ball. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Inside the count even one and one and that’s in there at the knees. two. The White Socks down by a pair and we’re in the top of the fifth. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] That one 95 to finish him off. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens. So up next for Chicago, Chase Maid swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field brings it in and that is that. One, two, three, go the White Socks. They trail it here. Two nothing. Back now in Tampa Bay. And now the shorts stop. Taylor Walls. Taylor. And first offering is fouled off. Walls 28 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2017. The shorts stop takes a ball. A two. One ball, two strike. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Tacman makes the play and there’s one away. Chandler. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. That’s a little bit low. And that misses. And that’s ball two. Late swing. Fouled to the left. [Music] 32 [Applause] [Music] right through there. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. And now here is Hassan Kim. One for two. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. And a foul ball. Hit hard on the ground to short. On to first. That ends the frame. Down in order go the Rays, but they’re on top two nothing and welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the top of the six. Here’s the White Socks DH. Austin Slater. Pepio back to work. Just missed. and that’s outside and the count two and nothing. [Music] That’s a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with late with the swing there. It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. [Applause] And that’s outside. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Applause] [Music] that one misses. So, a leadoff walk that could jumpst start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. Edgar Carol steps to the plate for the White Socks. Goal for two in this one. And that is out of play. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. [Applause] Caught looking for the K. Well, they had a great plan of attack for him tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach. Just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game. I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach, figure out how they’re beating him. make this adjustment really quick cuz Word will get around the league in a hurry. And now Miguel Vargas [Music] swings through that one for strike one. One ball, one strike. [Music] That’s down and in. Fouls one off. Two and two. Got him. Make it seven strikeouts for him. Now it’s the right fielder Mike Tman. His split numbers between June and July there. fast for a strike. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. Consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. That’s down and in. A slider missed. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. And that is cut on and missed. And the count one and two has been able to go inside as well as outside effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. [Applause] This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. And that’s the third out. Make it six shut out innings for him out there. Now it’s the Rays two and the White Socks nothing. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Jonathan Cannon. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. 345 do up for the home team. And here’s the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. There’s the strike. Movement for the White Socks in their bullpen. Tyler Alexander, the lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Number 66, the right-hander also getting loose. Swinging a ground ball up the middle, sends it to first. Leadoff man retired in the six. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Junior Camro. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that one fouled off. [Music] One down. Base is empty. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Morel. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Christopher Morell. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. Tapman ranging back and it’s caught just in front of the wall. Three up, three down for him there. We’re through six full. It’s the Rays two and the White Socks nothing. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Mason Engler. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Luis Robert now. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. And then maybe you get two or three up the middle and that squirts through. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Stepping in Lennin Sosa outside low and that’s ball one. The tying run at the plate and that one fouled off. [Music] Swinging and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Garrett Clevenger warming up for manager Kevin Cashetta warming up as well. Tying run at the plate. That one the other way. Kim with the throw to first. Awesome play there. And next to him for the Socks, Coulson Montgomery has grounded out a couple of times. Moved to second, Robert dives back in. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. Hit in the air, center field. He’s under it. puts it away for the out. And up next for Chicago, Michael A. Taylor. [Applause] First pitch and it just misses [Applause] late on that fast ball. I think he was sitting off speed there. [Applause] way out front for strike two with the tying run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven [Applause] in the dirt and on the wild pitch he goes down to third even with a good secondary lead sometimes it’s hard to see just how far that ball’s gotten away from the catcher and if you can make it to third base pretty much standing up well that time. He seemed to have a pretty good read. Gets to third safely and now he’s just 90 ft away from scoring. [Applause] Hard hit right side over to Diaz. Out number three. The White Socks lead one. They’re still down. It’s two zip. [Music] Bottom of the seventh. And now the right fielder Jake Mango. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. That one at the knees for a strike. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base. Pitch misses inside and it’s two and one. He swings and fouls one off. On the ground to the left, zips it across and the leadoff hit intercept down to open the seventh. Danny Jansen digs in now. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. One down, base is empty. outside low and one and one swings through that. One ball, two strike. And that skips in there. And it remains two and two. Okay. [Music] And down on strikes he goes. And there’s two away. Jose Caviierro next to hit for the Rays. There’s the strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in a count. in the air left field down the line and it’s just fouled. Man, just a matter of inches right there. If that stays fair, it’s at least a double [Music] on the ground to third. Montgomery fires over to first. Rays retired in order. Nothing doing for Tampa as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. We’re in the top of the eighth. Stepping in the White Socks lead off man Chase Maid Angler a 64 righty. He features a four seam fast, a slider, a curve, a change up, and he works in a two seamer. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Over to Diaz and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. right side. Mangum makes the grab for the second half. Now that number seven, Edgar Carol getting ready to hit. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. on the ground right side. Loves it on the dive. Boots it. Oh, this is unfortunate because it looked like it was going to be an awesome play. Something we see on the highlights tonight and tomorrow. But you have to applaud the effort on the stop. And if you don’t take care of the throw, it goes from a wow moment to one you regret really quick. At first and now the first baseman, Miguel Vargas, 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out inside. Just missed. Tying run at the plate. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Two outs and one fouled off. [Applause] Hit hard on the ground to the right side and it goes just fouled in the air right field and that is So, one left for the White Socks. They trail things here. Two nothing. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jordan Leisure. He’s been so good against lefties. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Taylor Walls. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a belief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Right through there for a strike. [Music] Checks win. Went around. 0 and two. Good eye in that spot. Out and that’s outside two. fights it off. He’ll see another. Still two and two after the foul ball. outside [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the air out towards left center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Chandler. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. In there at the knees, it’s 0 and one. Activity in the pen for the White Socks. Tyler Alexander, the left-hander, up and throwing. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Yeah, big swing and a miss. 02 is the count. [Music] Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and that’ll fall for a base hit. So, a man in first, Hassan Kim next to hit for the Rays. One for three. Check on the runner and he dives back in safely. First pitch misses. [Applause] ground ball to the right side, but it kicks fouled. Next pitch misses and it’s two and one. swing and a highf fly ball left field. Taylor under it and makes the grab and there’s Jul pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. And here’s the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. There’s a swing and a miss. Talk about tying a guy up. Ugly. Up the middle. My drop. That ends the inning. One left for Tampa, but they hold a two nothing lead. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Pete Fairbanks. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Mike Tman steps to the plate for the White Socks. [Applause] Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] [Applause] And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. [Applause] Missed with a change up. It’s a ball in two strikes. Two strikes down. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted. And now it’s Luis Robert and first offering is fouled off. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] sets him down on strikes and they’re down to their last out. This is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer. Come in and just destroy all hope. First two batters, two strikeouts. See if he can strike out the side. [Applause] [Applause] Sosa in the box now as he leaves that one up high. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Next offering is down low. [Applause] And the White Socks down to the final strike. Got so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. That’s way outside. Three and two now. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. [Applause] Fairbanks is just one strike away. Got it. And that’s the ball game. Well, it’s a lot of good pitching and defense in this ball game. When you have a lowscoring game, it’s imperative that the players stay on their toes, ready to make plays behind their pitcher, and they did exactly that. It’s an excellent win. Everyone goes in the clubhouse feeling really good about themselves. Two nothing your final here in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at ML.
