MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs Kansas City Royals – Jul 22, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Cubs. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. your Chicago Cub. [Applause] Just about set to go. And on the hill for the Cubs, Daniel Palencia. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. Ready to go. Jonathan Indie at the plate. And that’s through there for a strike. And this one is off and running. [Applause] swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. One down. And here now the lineup for the Royals. The sluggers in this lineup might not be too happy about the fact that the wind is blowing in today, Chris. Yeah. And you hear pitchers talk about how good it feels when the wind is at their back. And for hitters, you almost feel like beyond just the pitcher coming at you, you’ve got this other force coming against you. So important to try to get on top of the ball in terms of hitting line drives, you know, maybe really hard ground balls with a good exit velocity that’ll get you a base hit because it’s very frustrating. You just hit one on the screws, think it’s going to go out of the ballpark, and an outfielder is camped underneath it in front of the warning track. And that’s a little bit high. And the count is 2 and 0. And a pop up on the left side of the infield. Bruhan has it sized up. That’s out number two. Batting third, the first baseman number nine, Vinnie Pascantino. So up now for Kansas City, Vinnie Pasquantino. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. There’s the strike. Oh, and one that misses. One and one. One and one. That’s down and in. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Hat under this one. Makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. No score as we head to the bottom of the first. back here at the friendly confines and on the hill in this one, Noah Cameron. How about a report on him, Chris? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. I mean, it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point. Maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Michael, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Cameron goes 6′ 3 in 220 lbs and he was drafted in the seventh round in 2021. Next pitch misses way outside. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. That’s outside and it’s three and0. [Applause] And that’s him for a strike. puts it in the air out towards left center. And there’s one away. Let’s take a look at the lineup. And an important bat for them, batting fifth in this one. Carson Kelly. Yeah, definitely someone I always enjoy. You know, when I get a chance to watch him, whether he’s hitting in a game or even taking swings during batting practice, man, this guy is always so focused on what he’s doing on that task at hand. He’s got so much attention to detail that when he steps in the box, his success rate is really high. Kyle Tucker batting with one down, takes a strike, one out, base is empty. That finds the mark on the inside corner. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. One down, base is empty. Ball one. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Two two count. Inside. Just missed. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Ninth pitch of the atbat do next. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. outside and that is ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. If I were him, I’d be nibbling around the plate as well. I mean, this guy’s just capable of getting pitches outside of the zone and driving them a long way. And here is Seya Suzuki. Foul ball there. [Music] Tucker leads off first with one away. Ball. One ball, one strike. Just missed. [Applause] [Music] on the ground and it goes just foul. Pitch misses outside and that’s ball three. Man at first, one away. fouled off again and it remains three and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. First inning going a bit long. 23 pitches to this point on the ground right side. Four, six, three. It’s a double play and that’ll do it for the inning. Nothing for the Cubbies in the opening frame. Onto the second now for Wrigley with no score. Second inning, set to go. Here’s the third base. Mel Garcia. Garcia. Palencia back to work. This one popped up right side. Suzuki makes the grab. One pitch and one out. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. He’s been known to jump all over the first pitch. So that seems like a missed opportunity right there. swings through that one for strike two. Ed Drummond behind the plate calling balls and strikes. Maybe one of the most respected umpires around the league. He’s not the kind of umpire that you’re likely to notice back there. And that can be a huge compliment really. So if you’re just kind of quietly doing your job, staying consistent with your calls, hitters, pitchers, managers, even fans, they’re all going to appreciate you. Ed Drummond, he’s that kind of umpire. frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Swang and a miss. That one at 99. Only two now. Up the middle. Porner. Jump throw across his body on the money. Nice play. Royals bats are quiet there. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. We see Pete Co Armstrong now. How about this? Both of his parents are actors. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. [Music] And that one fouled off. [Music] 0 and two now. Fast ball. Almost got him there. [Applause] That’s a swings and misses. Struck him out. Batting. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. Kelly. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Nothing. Nothing here in the bottom of the second. Just missed. [Applause] That one misses. Three balls, no strikes. And that drops in for a strike. [Music] And now the count filled up. Three and two. The count is full. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls. But because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. Two out space is empty. Come on, Ian. That one hammered but pulled fouled. That’s a little bit low. Really good take especially with two strikes. fights that one away. Still one and two. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Next offering down in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here 2. He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. And now it’s filled up. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] And it’s ball four. He missed down low. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Two walks are never good, especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout. But he’s still in a good spot. He’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order. [Applause] Dansby Swanson in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Runner on the go. Strike in there. Throw to second. Out at second. That ends the inning. Well, trying to get into scoring position, but a great catch and throw to end the inning. That’s the way to pick up the pitcher on the north side of Chicago. John Chami and Chris Singleton. New inning getting started at the plate. John Rae that catches the zone for a strike. Going to one. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, hitters aren’t touched it. Swing and a miss at 100 m an hour. Line drive. Fair ball. really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Now here is Freddy Fine. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. [Music] Just missed. I got a ball. One strike. The kick in the pitch. Runner goes. ground ball up the middle gets it to first and one away in the top of the third. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Kyle Isbel in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Ray leads off second with one gone in the inning. There’s the strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. That one’s in there. And it’s one and two. And there’s a ball. Got some cut action to it. Velocity pretty good on that slider so far. Moving the ball around nicely. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. really tight bite on that slider and just couldn’t get the barrel to it out front. You’ve got to try to pull those hands tight to the body to get it through. And I’m thinking he probably wanted that pitch to end up even more inside to keep it out of the danger zone. But it had enough late break and deception to get the job done. So the lineup flips over. Jonathan India digs in now. That’s in there and it’s 0 and one. Two outs and one in scoring position. And now the count is even. One and one. [Music] And that’s it in for a strike. two runner at second. Two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Swinging and a miss. And that is that. So, one hit is all they get. We head now to the home half of inning number three. No score. bottom of the inning and here comes Dansby Swanson. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. pitch misses one and0. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. And the one thing about that is speed never goes into slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Next pitch is outside. [Music] This one in the air. Garcia under it and makes the grab. One up, one down. Patting the second baseman, Nico. So, here’s corner now. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris go Chris through the early stages. He hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Right through there for a strike. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. He makes the catch and there’s two. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it did produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Vidal Bruhan stands in now and watches strike one. Foul ball still tied at zero. Last of the third. Gets a piece and stays alive. That one in the dirt. It’s a ball in two strikes. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. [Music] and that just misses. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. Here comes the pitch. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Due next. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and that’ll fall for a base hit. He saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle. Now batt back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. Michael Bush the next Cub to hit. Fly to left his first time. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] back that to right. He makes the grab and the inning is over. No runs, one hit, no errors and a man left. Three innings complete. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. Back here at Wrigley Field, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Bobby Wit Jr. The shorts stop takes the ball. Whit Jr. is one of only two players in ALL history to have 20 home runs in 20 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. Boo. The other player Rodriguez hat makes the grab. One away. Now battling the first baseman. Vinnie. And here’s the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. He’s 0 for one. Ball one. No strikes. out to center. He’s got it. And there’s two away. The batter, the third base, Mike Garcia. Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals. Fly to right. His first time. Chicago. That one down the line. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing here this half to the bottom of inning number four now. No score. Bottom four. It’s only now for Chicago. Kyle Tucker. The designated hitter. Kyle Tucker in his sixth season. 28 years old. A former first round pick back in 2015. [Music] misses off the play. One ball, one strike. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Check swing called. Strike. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. just missed. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Music] Swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one. came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Suzuki takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. One down. Base is empty. Well struck left field. Banks off the wall. Now he’ll turn for second. The relay throw and in there with a double off the wall. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left. didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence, but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases. Now, let’s see if they can put up the first run of the game. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Pete Crow Armstrong. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport in the dirt and no movement on the bases. It’s ball one. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mount. The pick behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Down the line. It’s a base hit. Suzuki headed for the plate. He will score. The Cubs take the lead and it’s an RBI single. One- nothing. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. One down, runner first. Now at the plate, Carson Kelly right through there for a strike. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Pro Armstrong the runner at first with one gone to the inning on the ground to short with fires to first in time. The left fielder number eight, Ian P. in half up to hit. He reached out to walk his first time. [Applause] There’s a swing and a drive and that gets down into the gap. Run comes in from second and they take a two-run lead. Waste no time there. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. Danby Swanson is going to get a chance to hit. And there’s a foul ball. [Applause] man on second. Two down. Bullpen action for the Royals. Michael Lorenzan, the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up. Clark getting cranked up as well. [Music] There’s the strike. One ball, two strike. Chases that one out of the zone. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. We played four. It’s the Cubs two and the Royals nothing. We go to the top of the fifth and now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Perez. Valencia back to work. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. He just hoping he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Yeah, the slider just misses. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. That’s outside and it’s two and two. [Applause] Foul tip into the mix. Stuck him out. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and velo to it. And to the plate for Kansas City, Jack Kaggle Leone. That’s a strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Fought off foul. The Royals trailing by two and we’re in the top of the fifth. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two and that’s down and away. Two strikes and that one popped to short Swanson. Two down. [Applause] John Ray steps in for the Royals. One for one with a single so far. There’s the strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. first pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. No balls, two strikes, two outs, swing and a miss. Struck him out now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. KC down in order. They’re still down. It’s two zip. We head to the bottom of the fifth. There’s Nicoer, the second baseman. Nicoer and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Feels like almost every bat has gone full. They’ve worked a full count six different times and that’s the main reason his pitch count is so high right now. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and the leadoff man aboard now third base. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Noah Cameron won’t go any further tonight and it wasn’t his best start but he kept them in it to this point and we’ll come back with a new arm. Now pitching for the So the Royals bring on a new arm, Michael Lorenzo. They know that he can get a right-hander out, but he’s in position to face a couple of lefties this inning. Man at first, nobody out. And now it’s Vidal Bruhan. Put together a great bat last time. Really battled. Ended up with the base hit. just missed [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] right through there for a strike. One and one. Rolled to short. Could be two to India. Second for one. Relay to first double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. My gosh. Michael Bush the next Cub to hit. Go for two in this one. That one to first and foul ball. All right. Come on, Michael. Bull. That’s out. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Hit hard on the ground to the right side. And that’s a fair ball. [Applause] Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle. Two outs, runner at first. Kyle Tucker, the next Cub to hit. A strike out and a walk. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Bush off of first with two away. Let’s go. King swing and a liner foul off to the right. That one not close now. One and two. [Music] Stays alive. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. That’s hard hit on the line. Dives and he can’t hang on. They’ll throw to third and that’ll put runners at the corners with two away. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Here’s a big power threat. Sea Suzuki. That’s in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and2. [Music] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Inside the count one and two. Corners are occupied with two down. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. [Applause] And they tack on three. It’s five zip. Already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. That slider on the outside part of the plate is typically hit the other way. But to be able to get to it, pull the baseball and get it up in the air for a home run. I’m just really impressed. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Michael Lorenzan done for the night. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. [Applause] Steven Cruz on a pitch out of the pen here. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it. Base is empty with two away. And now the center fielder, Pete Crow Armstrong. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] Called strike right there. And that one got a piece of him. He had two strikes on him. Eddie Hill now batting catch. And up next for Chicago, Carson Kelly. [Music] Runner on the move. That’s it for a strike. Throw there. See [Applause] that was close. But Stackcast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts. Chris, yeah, you see that plus speed and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag. Such a threat on the bases. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. [Applause] Outside low. One and two to count. Swing in a ball line to center and that gets down for base hit. They extend their lead as the runner scores from second. It’s an RBI single and it’s now a six-run lead. Ian Hat, the next Cub to hit. Former first round pick out of the University of Cincinnati. Grew up in Pittsburgh. There’s a strike on the ground. Right side. tosses to first. Inning over, although plenty of damage done. They get four runs on five hits, no errors, and leave one. Five innings complete. It’s the Cubs six and the Royals nothing. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Shota Ianaga. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. Fine in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. Movement in the bullpen. Ryan Braier preparing to come on if needed. Horton warming up as well. And that one pulled foul. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Swings and misses on the fast up in the zone for the strikeout. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Isbel in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Rip towards third. Bruhan to first in time and a couple of quick outs. So the Royals batting order turns over. The batter now Jonathan India [Music] and that’s a strike. The Royals with a lot of ground to make up and we’re the top half of the sixth on the ground right side. Horner tosses to first. Royals set down in order. Three up, three down for him there. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Cubs six and the Royals nothing. Bottom of the sixth inning. So up now for Chicago. Danby Swanson Swanson and first offering is fouled off. The short stop takes a ball. Swinging a foul straight back. Come on in the air. right field. Kaggle Leone pulls it in and there’s one away. The batter number two will come up to hit. One for two. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. felling at bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the six. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. Good eye right there. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Belly showed a lot of conviction with the fast ball there. Not just because of the velocity, but also the ability to command it on the inside part of the plate. The last thing you want to do with two strikes is just get too far in there and it gets away and it hits the batter. So when I see a two- strike fast ball bunch up a guy like that, it tells me there’s a lot of confidence in that pitch. Bruhan up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. That misses. Ball two. Two and0. Right through there for a strike. Two balls, one strike. Come on. Just off the outside edge. Three and one now. Michael Bush waiting to hit for the Cubs. That’s in there. Three balls, two strikes. We got full count. And he hits a ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing happening there for the Cubs. They lead it though six zip. Well, this game isn’t very close. Singy, let’s see if we got any messages from those tuning in today. I know we got some good stuff in there. All right, singing. When you played, how much of a fashionista were you? Would you come to the ballpark dressed to the nines? No. Went out. Even on the road trips, I was, you know, pretty average. There were some guys that would dial it up and there’d be some outfits where you’re kind of double taking and saying, “Where in the world are you going?” But overall, I’d say I kept it lowkey. Up next for the Royals, the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. Counts one and0 in the dirt, but kept close. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Shoda 31 years old and he was born in Japan. And that’s a little bit high. Now 2 and 0. Well, the laid off man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Next offering is in for a strike. Boo, the runner at first, needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. And a foul ball. Swing and a broken bat roller towards third. in time to Bush. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Well, that actually works out for the hitter. If it’s not a broken bat, it’s hit hard enough for a double play. But with the slower roller, defense does a nice job at least getting one out of it. And next up for the Royals, Mikel Garcia. Garcia checks his swing. Now it appeal to first and he went around according to Clyde Washington. Whit the runner at second with one away. Off the mark there and it’s a ball and a strike. One and one. [Music] Check swing. No appeal. [Music] That one missed. Three balls, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Headed towards the corner. This looks like extra bases coming home. He will score. [Music] Up next for the Royals, the designated hitter, Salvador Perez. Salvi steps into the box now [Applause] and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. One’s the count. [Applause] Missed inside with the curb. Run around to third, one gone. [Applause] Nope. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] He swings and drives one out to deep left field. Half ranging back on it. And that one’s gone into the bleachers. He made him pay for that one. And they slice into the lead. It’s 6-3. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. He got on plane with that high fast ball. And look how his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Absolutely crushed that pitch. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Shota Imanaga won’t go any further. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching for they go with one of their more experienced arms in this spot, Caleb Thebar. Caleb, he’s into the game, but the base is empty. [Applause] Base is empty, one away. And now the right fielder, Jack Kaggle Leone. That one outside. Ball one. The bar a very difficult guy to get hits off of. It’s really rare for teams to string stuff together against it. He wins every pitch and for a hitter sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches. Next offering is fouled back. Unless he beats himself somehow can’t find it, doesn’t have the control command that day, you can pretty much forget about it. [Applause] As a hitter, there’s even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake, right? Yeah. And you’re hoping that, you know, somehow someway, whether it’s a hit by pitch, a walk, something bad happens because outside of that, stuff is just too good to fail. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball three. And he’s got deception in his delivery. And it’s not that he’s trying to deceive the hitters. He just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up. It gets on him a little bit quicker than they anticipate even though they know what the velocity numbers are. For the Royals, one down. John Ra steps in for the Royals. [Applause] Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Fouled off left side. [Applause] Fly ball center field. Cro Armstrong drifts towards it, makes the grab, and there’s two gone. [Applause] Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. Now batting catcher Freddy Fine. [Applause] That’s in there. Strike one. [Music] [Applause] grounds one to short. Swanson handles, throws to first. That’s a third out. Two-run shot for the Royals this inning. It’s now 63. Major League Baseball is on the show. pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Sam Long. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. So, digging in, Michael Bush, one for three. The first base, Michael Bush on the ground to third. whips it across. One up, one down. Talk about being able to dial up the velocity. That first base over there might need a little pad inside that first base’s mid. So, here’s Kyle Tucker. Now, with this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. Out towards right center. That’s well struck. That one back there. And it’s into the bleacher. It’s out of here. Kyle Tucker sends it out and they add a run. It’s 73. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the press shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. [Applause] Sea Suzuki getting ready to hit. He’s already homered in this game. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. [Applause] hit hard on the ground to short. Throws to first in time. Now batting the center fielder Pete. And next for the Cubs, Pete Crow Armstrong. He’s a guy, Chris, whose highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms of the sport. That one hit at the knees for a strike. Yeah, the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance, he’s going to throw it from the warning track if he has to. Swing and a miss at a slider. No balls, two strikes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Third out and that ends the frame. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 73. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Ryan Braier. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. And now it’s Kyle Isel. The Royals in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. And that clips the inside corner. Here comes Bullpen with some action. Kade Horton up and throwing for manager Craig Councel that keeps the corner. Struck him out looking. Well, not much you can argue with there as a hitter. That pitch was dotted on the inside corner of the plate. I think even if he swings the bat, it blows him up and not really able to do anything with it. Anyhow, I think if you see that early, then perhaps you can pull those hands a little bit tighter and get the fat part of the bat to it. But I’d say overall, you just have to tip your cap on that one. Great execution. Jonathan India steps in for the Royals. 0 for three in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Ball one, no strikes. Here we go. Check. Swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. I got one ball, one strike. The Royals down by four and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Music] and a one-two swing and a miss at 96. Struck him out coming out of the bullpen and throwing bees. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Suzuki makes the play and it’s out number three. onto the bottom of the eighth. Leading off Carson Kelly, [Applause] Long back to work. Fast for a strike. swings and misses. That’s strike two. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. As a hitter, you don’t like it. But he’s commanded his fast ball and out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. [Music] One ball, two strike. Fights it off. He’ll see another lifted in the air right center field and it falls. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. You know what they say, he couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second base and dropped it in there. So a man aboard in half the next to hit. He swings and fouls one off. [Music] And it’s fouled away. All one. This one in the dirt. Way inside. Good job to fight that one off. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the offspe pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. popped in the air left side and there’s one down. The batter number seven, shortstop Gansby Swanson. Swanson digs in. Swanson, former first round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Vanderbilt player in college, college World Series player, all that good stuff, but really coming into his own. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. 0 and one. Next offering way upstairs to third and it gets by him. Now batting two on, one out. Here’s the second base, Nico Horn. And that one upstairs. And another ball. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. [Music] And that one fouled off. Let’s do line drive. Base hit down the line. Here comes Kelly. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores and the lead is up to five. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Sam Long will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching new pitcher in the game for the Royals, Taylor Clark. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Runners are the corners here. One away. Vidal Bruhan the next Cub to hit. And that one almost got him. Brothers at the corners, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] On the ground to second, might be two. Whit for one and that’s quick work out of the pen. One batter, two outs, inning over, but the RBI single pushes across a run. Last chance coming up for the Royals. We go to the ninth. So up now for Kansas City, Vinnie Pasquantino. Pasquantino. [Applause] And the first offering a fast ball for a strike [Music] [Applause] [Music] and that skips in the dirt. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. [Applause] [Applause] Off the plate inside. The countdown two and two. breaking ball in there. Got him looking and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Tremendous job of bringing that ball back over the plate. He gets you just enough of it to get the call. And tell you what, as a hitter, it starts out of the zone. It looks really far away. And for it to catch the outside corner, you just have to tip your cap to the pitcher. Stepping in, Mikel Garcia. [Applause] There’s a strike. [Applause] Way out front for strike two. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Royals down to their final out. Well, that event seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Back up the middle and a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. And to the plate for Kansas City, Jack Kaggle Leone and first offering is fouled off. Perez leads off first with two down to the inning. Check swing and that’s a ball. Two outs. They’re down to their final strike. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. Brazier is just one strike away in the dirt. [Applause] This one smoked out to left. Ball game. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. 83 the final in this one. The Cubs go home a winner for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us. Heat. Heat. Double move.
