Paul Skenes Dazzles in Bucs Win | Pirates vs. Tigers Game Highlights (7/21/25)

Paul Skeins taking the mound here at PNC Park. His first start since the All Star game taking on a Tigers team that by winning on Sunday now back in the best record in baseball and so it will be a formidable foe here tonight. A little weak dribbler and an easy play for the first out is familiar with Gleyber Torres who batted in that first inning first pitcher in baseball history to start the All Star game. His first two major league seasons, a little weak shallow right field and a nice running catch out there for nick Gonzalez over the shoulder grab on the dead run and shallow right two up two down here is Riley Green back to the heat striking him out and Paul schemes a 123 1st in the Bucks Skes. He’s still not allowed to run in the first inning in any of his last 26 starts dating back to August of last year, Jack Flaherty facing this Pirates lineup, 10 straight decisions. Flaherty has won against the Pittsburgh Pirates. 32 pitch is a base hit fastball grounded sharply so a leadoff hit for Spencer Horwitz. Here’s Mccutchen swing and a miss strike three. There’s the slider, tight breaking ball from Jack punch out number one and a swing and a miss. It’s a fastball at 93 that time for a second straight strikeout here. Now, nick Gonzalez after leadoff hit back to back cases. Ground ball gets through Meadows charges it keeping Horwitz 2nd 1st and second. Two outs for o’neil Cruz got him fastball painted at the knees on the inside corner. Neil Cruz takes a called third, two soft singles. Three strikeouts for Jack Flaherty in his scored his first bottom of the second. Here’s keep Brian Hayes against Jack Flaherty Hayes, a 333 career hitter versus Flaherty. There’s a line drive base hit in the right that was blistered by Hayes leadoff single and now Jackins that is a swing and a miss on a filthy curveball below the zone. So Winski is down and throws one of the best curveballs in all of baseball. Henry Davis and it’s launched to center field Meadows is back. He’s still going. Parker is there to reel it in Parker Meadows an outstanding effort to find the ball in the triangle out there and put away out. Number two brilliant Hays with a leadoff single. Still there here with two away, be pushed up to second on the walk second straight inning. The Pirates have had a couple of base runners on against Jack Flaherty’s spencer singled in the first fighting this one off. A flyball shallow right field drops in for a hit. Pirates take the lead. Skeens has the lead and every run is going to be so big with Paul Skeens on the mound. Here’s andrew Mccutchen and a walk bases are loaded for Reynolds coming up with Skeens on the mound. It is imperative that you don’t let this inning unravel fly ball toward the line at right field long run and drops it for a base hit. This will score a couple. Brian reynolds delivers a two run single to right. Pirates lead three nothing in the second inning. Nice lead when you got Skeins on the mound. Three is a tough task against Paul Skeens who’s kept every ball in the infield so far. Now, skes with nice margin here early. There’s a base hit Parker Meadows tags a curveball and goes rolling. Second base. It’s a leadoff double for the Tigers. Center fielder, soft little tapper to third. Brian Hayes gets around at fields and fires and gets no state at second. It will be runners at 1st and 2nd. Nobody out. Now. Trey Sweeney, it’s a pop up shallow, right? A sweeper that was in on a catch made and Reynolds will not be tested and out. Number one here in the third, Keith’s the ground ball kitz tries to start it safe. Colt, Keith just did beat the ra winners at 1st and 3rd 2 outs. Can Skeens get out of it. Tigers have not scored labor Torres at the plate swing of the , as he struck out 99 miles an hour in on his hands, the big guy strikes out a couple hit by pitch puts two on and two out runner Torkelson with a single parker medals, high heat strikes him out. Skes gets out of it again. Still three pirates. Mccutchen has struck out and walked and Mccutchen softly served in the center field Willie. That base hit 2233 career hits for Andrew Mccutchen. Mike Schmidt is next. How about that? Incredible names? And he’s passing by fifth innings has struck out four called third strike fastball. The top of the zone, there’s just certain pitches he throws, you just have no chance, no change. He has not walked a batter since July the first against the ST Louis Cardinals before the free pass to Keith. He struck him out with a sweeper looking sixth strikeout for Paul Skeens and he caught labor torres looking on the sweepers, certainly on board with how the players are handling him and these innings, that’s the second out. And now zack Mckinstry fly ball to center field back is Cruz warning track and he’ll have room to make the catch final out. That could be the final batter for Paul Skeens a 12366 shutout innings for Skeins seventh inning and it is Braxton Ashcraft now on in relief for the Pirates who lead three to nothing. That’s a good start. Get him through the seventh. And my guess is we see Santana and Then David Bednar Parker Meadows has doubled and struck out a little bunt three basement bare hands. Hayes throws and get him. He Brian Hayes pounces on that and gets meadows put down a pretty good bunt Hayes was well off the line. It was bunted a little firm but still had to be a great play to retire him. Balls grounded to the shortstop and hustling to the bag. Kiner FFA right behind. Second gets there before Beerling arrives for the force and it’s time for the seventh inning stretch. Pirates lead hopefully smooth waters the rest of the way for the Pirates three nothing. Dennis Santana takes over for the Pirates here. Eighth inning leading three nothing in PNC parks swing and a miss and a strikeout for Dennis Santana long at bat Keith. But he goes down the 12 th pitch of that at bats. Haven’t done much against this righty. A ground ball up the middle to second base. That’s off the glove of Gonzalez and the Tigers get a baserunner here in the eighth inning. The door creaks, I think even if he fields it cleanly, very tough to throw out torres at first Riley Green at the plate swing and a miss, he went to the change up and got him second K two outs, snowballs, two strikes , two outs runner at first base. Pirates lead 3 to 0 swing and a Miss Dennis Santana strikes out three of the four, he faces go to the bottom of the eighth inning David Bednar trying to close it, save it for Paul schemes. Looking for his 14th save er, a of 245. David just 27 hits in 33 innings. 45 punchouts. Who’s there? What an effort from Tommy Pham? That was something special from Tommy Pham. He has been so impressive that ball was hit pretty well by the lefty tailing back a bit towards the left fielder, Tommy Pham. But man, great angle, great timing on the dive big first out and now Dyllan Dingler with one away dingler shoots it to right field. The Tigers have a pulse here in the ninth, one runner on one out. Tiger trying to score for the first time tonight and a one hopper to second to the shortstop Kiner-Falefa and Kinder falefa will not get a throw off ball actually comes out of his hand. They get the force at second two outs. Uh 46 put out. So Meadows at first, here’s matt Beerling. He got him for Pirates blank the Tigers and open the series with a 30 win here tonight and the Pirates shut out the team with the best record in baseball tonight. 30. They beat the Tigers and get Paul Skeens his first win since May 28th.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on July 21, 2025. Paul Skenes went 6 innings with 6 strikeouts. Bryan Reynolds brought in 2 RBI, Spencer Horwitz added an RBI and Ke’Bryan Hayes had 2 hits and 1 run on the night. David Bednar got his 14th save of the season.

  1. Yinz, let's face it… we all wish Paul Skenes could pitch every game! When he pitches we win more… I was at the game on Saturday against the White Sox, worst record in baseball! We got swept by them all 3 games! Yet, we can beat the best record in baseball, the Tigers?! This makes no sense at all, or does it? See, it's our bullpen! It's still so very weak. The pitcher left the game Saturday with a lead, 4-2… our bullpen gave up 8 runs combined! This can NOT happen if we want to win ballgames and be competitive for the Playoffs again! Strengthen the bullpen Coach!

  2. Finally, Paul's got a win! The small ball concept paid off, and the bullpen didn't implode. What are they saving his arm for? To maximize the trade value to the Yankees or Dodgers for cash considerations?

  3. I already know we are going to put up a great push at the end of the season. It’s going to be too little too late again. That’s why we need to sell this team. The team with what it has now has serious potential, we are spending too little and don’t improve our hitting with better coaches.
