What a joke this organization is.

  1. There, there. Their ineptitude knows no bounds. They’re trying their best there.

  2. Little dude is betting on himself, good for him. Also idk if I could turn down 2 mil at that age lmao

  3. Guessing the kid figures he can go to school, get redrafted higher and get a bonus 4x that.
    Good luck to him.

  4. They even saved some money on other picks. He must have wanted significantly overslot or just he wasn’t going to go pro If that is the case, then that is a major fumble by the front office.

  5. I think he’s either getting bad advice from someone close to him or not listening to good advice.

Obviously he could hurt his arm, but I’d think the much likelier risk is that he just doesn’t wow anyone and ends up having to take 4th round money or something.

I read recently that these deals for the HS guys also generally include a guarantee that the team will fully cover 4 years of college if the guy doesn’t make it. Which UCLA will assuredly not do if he ends up unable to play for whatever reason.

Anyway, stupid risk/stupid decision even if it works out for him. Should be a decently major black eye for Cherington — extremely uncommon for anyone taken this high not to sign.

  6. You’d think they wouldnt draft a kid without a deal in place when it’s that high. I get someone after round 10… But your second. Jesus right when I try to give Cherrington credit for having better drafts

  7. This always seemed like a risky pick. This is probably why they drafted the 3 high school pitchers in the late rounds. Maybe one of those guys will accept a high bonus from the money saved from the college bats.

  8. Hope the best for the kid. But it must’ve been hard to turn down $2 million especially with how often young arms are getting arm/elbow injuries. Maybe we’ll draft him again in 3 years.

  9. Dang, admittedly i don’t know as much about MLB draft as other sports but this can’t happen that often right?

  10. I remember when Marc Appel did this, and it felt like the worst thing that ever happened to the Pirates.

Oh, well. Good luck to the guy. This happens sometimes.
