MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 24, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
joined by my partner Chris Singleton. I’m John Shami. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the St. Lewis Cardinals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, just about set now and for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michaels. What do we have on him? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So, when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing. the home run to win ball games. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Going to count one and two. One ball, two strikes to count. Little bit low. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count off at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. That one misses and now three and two. [Applause] And a pitch fouled off again and it remains three and two. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Tatis tries to hold up. Appeal to first. No swing. Gary Simmons with the call. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Luis Arise stands in. Tatis dives back in. That one catches the corner for a strike. in for a strike and a count is 0 and2. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat. If he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Hit hard should be extra bases. Here comes Tatis around third. He will score and they take the lead. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Manny Machado, the next up for the Padres’s. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] Man at second. Highf fly ball out to left field and an automatic double as it hops the fence as a run scores. Oh, this one started with a bad jump. a bad read off of the bat. He ends up having to try to leap out of desperation. Can’t come down with it and it turned into extra bases. It’s Xander Bogarts now and a foul ball. Runner at second. Nobody out. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Pitch misses and a count. Two and one. Next offering is fouled back. No outs. Runner on second. [Applause] on the ground to third and it gets by him. And now runners at the corners, nobody out. That is fifth left fieldielder Gavin Sheets. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. First off, it just misses. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. That one back up the middle and it gets through. In to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single and they’re up by three. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. First and second, no outs. Digging in, Jose Glacius. Swinging a foul out of play. Bulgarts the lead runner at second. Sheets on at first with nobody out. And it’s even up. Grounded to third. Could be two. There’s one relay to first. Double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Jake Croninworth. Now here’s Jake Croninworth and that one fouled off. [Applause] Two outs late on that fast ball. I think he was sitting off speed there. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. Onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Padres’s three and the Cardinals coming up. And we’re back. Today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know it is. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. And he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. Ground ball right side. Croninworth throws on to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinal lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Victor Scott. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position, are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Ivon Herrera in now takes ball one off the plate. swinging a foul pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. The 1-1 is fouled off. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Swinging a miss that one in the dirt. Diaz down to first with it. Gets the out. Two down after the strike out. You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach. And that’s a great example why right there. If he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits, he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt. On the other side, still a nice two strike pitch though. Alec Burlson stands in now. Looks at that one inside. rips one to right. Fair ball. [Applause] Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Bad at first. Here’s Contrarus now. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Slider misses outside. Swing and a miss and the count is one and two. Clearly it was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes and that is downstairs. Two balls, two strikes. Hit in the air center field. Tatis pulls it down. And that is that. The Cards leave one. They trail in this one. Three nothing. Back here in St. Louis, digging in as the switch inning outfielder Rice Johnson. Michael back to work. And first offering is fouled off. And that’s a fair ball. Batty Knight catcher. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Man at first, nobody out. Elias Diaz the next up for the Padres’s. Fouled off down the right side. Michael throws to first. Johnson on at first. Nobody out. Grounded to third, could be two, one at second, and they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. So, the batting order turns over and now the center fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. And there’s a foul ball. Two outs. Base is empty. Go St. Louis. Come on, St. Louis. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Win sends it across to first and they take care of Tatis for the out. That ends the frame. Padres’s go down quietly, but they lead it three nothing. We head to the bottom of the second and stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Aronado. Nolan Aronado in there for a strike at the top of the zone. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game and it’s fouled away. [Music] 0 and two now. That’s down and in. A slider missed. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. [Music] Fouls it off. Still one and two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. That one not close. Now two and two. Darvish delivers. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Darbish kicks. Delivers. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Come on. Breaking ball. Misses down and away. In the air. Pretty deep out to center field. One away. Batting six. The shorts stop Mason. And now the short stop Mason win. He’s been on fire at the dish lately. Working on a fiveame hitting streak. Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. Right side. Hard hit. Tosses to first and they got him. Fast ball groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air. Maybe drive it into the gap. Two outs. Space is empty. And now Joho. This to third. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still finds a way to get off a throw. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over and down in order go the Cardinals. They trail it here. 3 nothing. Back here in St. Louis. New inning getting started. Stepping in for San Diego. Luis Arise. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Arise batting second in today’s lineup. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. ripped but a curls foul. It’s been a rough start on the mound for this guy. This third inning so important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. The O2 swings through it and that’s a strike out. Now batting third base. Here’s Manny Machado. One for one with a double and a run scored. And first offering is fouled off. One out. Base is empty. strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough if you’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Bulgar stands in now and watches strike one. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. That’s a little bit low. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball and that will fall and that keeps the inning going. Now batting Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s singled and drove in a run his first time through. Bogards dives back right through there for a strike. [Applause] The goal one swing and a ball lifted left field. Burlson on his way over. He’s got it and that’ll do it. One left for San Diego, but they lead it three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the right fielder, Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker. Swing. A highf fly ball. Hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. That one is gone. And they close the gap. It’s 3-1. First pitch hacking and it paid off for him in a big way. [Applause] Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. [Applause] And there’s a rocket into the outfield around first. Digging for two. The throw into second and he’ll pull in there with a standup double. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Challenged him with the fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Now up for St. Louis. Brendan Donovan 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at the strike. One on, nobody out. A run in here in the last half of the third. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Tatis calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting designated hitter Ivon. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. 0 for one so far. [Applause] Darvis checks on the runner and dives back in safely. [Applause] [Music] Base hit. Throw comes into third and they’re at the corners with only one out. Oh, that’s a smart decision to hold up with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Don’t want to run into an out at home plate. Runners at the corners here. One away. Burlson getting ready to hit. One for one with a single so far. [Applause] And that misses. And that is ball one. [Applause] [Music] And that one fouled off. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. [Applause] And a count one and two. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] Foul ball still a one and two count. [Applause] And that one is inside. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] [Music] line drive and that’s a base hit. The run scores from third. It’s an RBI single. They trail by one. It’s 32. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into a count, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Perrera on third. Burlson over at first with one away. Next offering in there for a strike had a count even at one. [Applause] That’s down and in. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Next pitch is outside. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Two on, one out. This one smoked out to left. Makes the grab. Here comes the runner from third. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 33. Sometimes that can be a little tough to score on. It was hit so hard that getting back to the bag, the tag takes a little bit of time by the time that outfielder catches it, but a really good job of getting that run in from third. Here’s Nolan Aronado. [Applause] And that one upstairs tied up here in the early going. [Applause] And now two and nothing. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. Two outs and a foul ball. [Music] [Applause] Got him swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for a strike three. So they get three in draw even. On to inning number four. All tied up at three apiece. Back here at Bush Stadium as we go to the top of the fourth. Now it’s the short stop. Jose Glaciius. [Music] First pitch misses. Oh, after scoring runs. This is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. That one misses. Two balls, no strikes. And there’s a ball. Three balls strike. Back to back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run. Though he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Go ahead run on base. So digging in now for San Diego. Jake Croninworth struck out swinging his first time. Runner on the move. Late swing. Fouled to the left line. And that’s a base hit. Runner holds it second. But they’ve got something going on here. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high leverage spot right there. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. First and second, no outs. Now, here is Bryce Johnson. That’s off the mark. And that’s one that one missed. Two balls. No strike. [Applause] Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Sunny Gray up and throwing. Graco also throwing. First and second, no outs. Top half of inning number four. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball and a swing and a miss. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. But when you commit to throwing inside fast ball to your glove side across the strike zone, especially with two strikes, if you’re going to miss, you want to miss off the plate in. You do not want to leave it out over the part of the plate. So, that was excellent execution on that pitch. really tied him up and he couldn’t get a piece at all. Here’s Elias Diaz swing and a tapper that rolls foul. [Applause] Next offering misses one and one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Highf fly ball out towards left field into the corner but foul. Two on, one out in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there [Applause] in the dirt. But no advance from the runners. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. 3-2 now. He fouls it off. Will do it again. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. create just a little bit of illusion at the end and that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Miles Michael is done and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. [Applause] Now, so they turn things over to the righty, Andre Palante. Well, he struggled quite a bit. So, this is another opportunity to get on the right track. He’s given up more than one hit per any pitch so far this season. Now, it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Golden opportunity right here. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. fought off foul. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base pads. That one misses and the count one and two [Applause] and just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And it remains two and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Check swing appeal to first and he punches him out. He went around Luis the next up for the Padres’s. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. And there’s the strike. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands and takes low for ball one. So they’re all loaded up with two outs and it is two and one. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing the run. The 2- two on the way in the air left field down the line and that’s a foul ball. [Applause] Two outs. Three, two, Manny Machado in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Oh, he can’t hang on. Still manages a throw out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed. Pods leave him loaded. Score remains tied at three. [Applause] Bottom four and stepping in for the Cardinals. Mason Win [Applause] out to short and he beats the throw. Shows off the wheels right there. an infield single. Well, that’s one of those where you just have to tip your cap because he couldn’t have played that one any better. Stood no chance with the speed running down the line. And now the Cardinals catcher Joho. He’s 0 for one. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo [Applause] the one and another ball. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one [Applause] on the ground. Could be two off balance feed. There’s one on the first double play. Up next. Nice soft hands on the back hand right there in the six hole. Starts the double play. That’s not an easy throw, but he puts it on the money. really good job to get that double play started. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered in this game. Strike one. [Music] Yeah, that’s too high. [Music] Swing and a miss at a slider. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone. And that slider that’s down, that’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. Ripped on a line and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Everything was mechanically sound with that swing right there. I mean, that’s pretty much what you’re wanting to replicate with every rep you take. You want good balance, barrel directly to the baseball, and good long extension after contact out in front of home plate. Man, there are a lot of doubles in a swing like that. Next to hit, Victor Scott out to center, brings it in and the inning is over. So, no runs on two base hits, no errors and one left on base. We’re headed to the fifth. All tied up at three a piece. And we’re back. Top five, John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Manny Machado. Palante back to work and that one fouled off. You know, these Padres’s, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Right through there for a strike. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] Fouled off and they’ll do it again. One and two here. Outside corner. Got him looking. Well, really nice job of finishing the hitter off right there. Long side command. Fast ball burn to the outside corner. Tell you what, very difficult to do anything with that pitch even if you do swing. Bogarts in the box again. Takes a strike. Now fly ball to right center. Walker makes the catch and they’re two down. Next for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets and first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. check swing and he went and it’s 0 and two ball two strikes and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two down on well struck right field and that one hops the wall around first and hustling for second and that’s a double. Nice double right there. Loud contact coming off the bat. Didn’t get enough air under to drive it out of here but he’ll take that swing and that result every time. So runner at second, two down. Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one [Applause] and fouled off. Sheets at second with two down. Got him swinging. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. Back here in St. Louis. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. [Applause] And that one sliced foul. You know, these cards digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve logged six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. That one misses the zone at the count. One and two. [Applause] Highf fly ball out to center field. He’s got it. And there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you, Darvish. And it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. Now pitching for They hand the ball over to a new arm, Jeremiah Estrada. Well, he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin. His strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season. Next is the designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. One for two. [Applause] In for a strike and one ball one there. All tied up. Last half of inning number five. [Music] And that’s downstairs. And it’s two and one. You got two balls, one strike. And a swing and a miss there. Two balls, two strikes. on the ground to short Glacius throws to first. Play is made. Two out. Now batting left fielder Alex. Now the left fielder Alec Burlson. [Music] And that one clips the corner. Movement in the bullpen. Yuki Matsui, the left-hander up and throwing. getting loose as well. Two outs. just missed. One and one. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Red Birds down quietly. Still tied three and three. Back here in St. Louis, top six stepping in for San Diego. Jake Croninworth delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands. If I’m out there on the ball, I’m going right back in there. Got him. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Not right. So up next, Bryce Johnson. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a belief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Johnson, 29 years old, and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2017. And another ball check swing and he went. Now two balls in a strike. One strike. Fast ball is outside. Come on. The other way. Aronado. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Up next for the Padres’s catcher Elias Diaz. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] That’s towards center. Scott moving under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And that is that. Nothing doing for the offense that time. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. All tied up at three apiece. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here comes Wilson Contrarus. [Music] That misses and it’s one and0. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Jason Adams up and loosening in the pen. Jacob warming up as well. right through there for a strike. The next offering misses and it’s two and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Battling here as he fouls it away. lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Tatis sizes this one up and there’s one down. Now batting third base. Here’s Nolan Aronado for two in this one. Come on. [Applause] And the first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. Here’s the O2. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. And the next pitch is way outside. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. And that just misses. [Applause] And downstairs, still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. And there’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make the call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Cole’s pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. win in the box now. Takes strike one. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the short stop. Takes the ball. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. [Applause] fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] Swings and misses. Struck him out. Slider got him for strike three. Oh, that Slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. And here is Johel Poso. [Applause] Ball for a strike. All one’s the count. [Music] Cardinal. Let’s go. [Music] Two outs. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Ow. And two. Now that’s a ball. [Applause] spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Aronado leads off first with two down to the inning. Just missing there. Ball two. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Swag and a miss. the velocity blasted it right past him. So, it’s no runs, no base hits, no errors, and one man left. We’re six full all tied up at three a piece. Top of inning number seven. And now it’s going to be Fernando Tatis Jr. Singy, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Fast ball for a strike at 95. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat, he think that one drilled left field to the warning track, makes the catch. Great swing of the bat right there trying to get on as that go ahead run. He just wasn’t able to find a hole. Luis Arise will hit next. There’s one guy that I can think about Boog who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. that misses the zone. One, two, the to. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. You talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle end. Kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to where you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it and not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it and that misses at one and one. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Next pitch, not close. Up high. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Padres’s down in order. So no change in the score. It’s 3-3. Now pitching for out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Jason Adam. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Now up for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. He’s already homered here in this one. Walker outside low and that’s ball one. Next offering popped in the air right field. Johnson pulls it down and he makes the catch. One up, one down. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott. Here’s the center fielder Victor Scott. And that’s fouled off. All tied up here in the bottom of the seventh. That’s out to center field. Tatis should have this one. And there’s two down. Now batting second base. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man Brendan Donovan. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. [Music] That one close rule to ball. And that is ball one. Ball two. Two and out. And another ball. Ivon Herrera in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Here’s a three 0. The sweeper catches the outside part of the zone upstairs and that is ball four. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Swing and a highfly ball right field. Johnson makes the grab on the run. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Phil M. He’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. Bon. That here is Xander Bogard. The designated hitter Xander Bogart. [Applause] That to right and it stays fair. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Sheets, [Applause] swinging a high-fly ball out towards right field. drops into the glove and there’s one down. Now batting shorts stop Jose Iglacius. So digging in Jose Eacius. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. [Applause] Fast ball gets the corner at the knees. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Ryan Helley, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Romero also getting ready. [Applause] Now the swinging a foul out of play. The two strikes may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. waves at defender for the strike out. I mean, there aren’t many curve balls in the sport today that break like that thing does. Huge movement. It’s so difficult to get on the same plane and even think about squaring it up, let alone get a piece and hope he throws something else to keep the at bat alive. So digging in now for San Diego. Jake Cronin work one for three. Pickoff throw. Bogart dives back [Applause] up the middle. Win throws to first in time. That takes care of Croninwood. Out number three. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. All tied up at three apiece. Back here at Bush Stadium onto the bottom of the eighth. Now the left fielder Alec Burlson. Burlington. [Applause] Adam back to work. And that misses. One and0. [Applause] And that one missing low. Two balls. No. [Music] [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with [Applause] and a swing to miss. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. Here’s a 2-2 and this is inside. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and an automatic double as it hops the fence. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Bird, you don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Now a move being made at second base. On a pinch run, Garrett Hampton and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. Just missed. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. [Applause] And the one got it started a little too early. Strike one. One and one. [Applause] [Music] There’s the swing in a miss. Big time gem right there. I hate it as a hitter, but standing in center field, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit. Go ahead run and score in position. Nobody out. Got him. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. a strike out and there’s one away. No, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone and then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Started to swing, held up. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] man at second. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Runner around third. Here comes the throw, but it’s offline. He will score. Four to three. They take the lead. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. right on time, good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. One down, runner at first at the plate. Mason Win in the air out towards right center. Tatis settles underneath it. Carous it. Two down. Now batting number 63 and stepping in for the Cardinals, Johel Poso 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. [Applause] That one a little bit high. Ball one. [Applause] Two outs. Here’s a sling to drive left field and he knew it. He sends it out of here. Home run number five on the season and they add to the lead. It’s 63. A little more breathing room is always a good thing in baseball and now they have it. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Jason Adams done for the night. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. [Applause] So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Adrien Morome, he last pitched two days ago. Adrien Morome. Jordan Walker digs in now. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Ball to strike. The pitch sliced down the right side. This one in the air. Arise and that’s the inning. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. Last chance coming up for the Padres’s. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Ryan Helley. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with the W. And now the right fielder, Bryce Johnson. Helley. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Oh, this is just part for the course these days. Huge fast balls coming out of the bullpen. [Applause] Inside and it’s one and one. [Applause] [Applause] foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Applause] tapped out front of the plate, fires over to first. Now one gone in the ninth. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Helley in his sixth season, 30 years old now, and he was a fifth round pick back in 2015. Diaz batting with one down, takes the strike. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. And the breaking ball drops in for a strike. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing play. Struck him out swinging. Padres with only one out remaining. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized he wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your sway. Tatis the next to hit takes outside. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] That’s a little bit low. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. Two and two now. So many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Fast ball. Almost got him there. Straighten him up a little bit. The Padres’s down to their final strike. And a swing and a miss. And that is the ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. 6-3 our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami saying so long. Heat. Heat. That’s the move.
