Training Camp Live: Not Slowing Down | Dallas Cowboys 2025
[Music] Welcome back to training camp live in Oxnard, California. Day three of Cowboys training camp and it’s practice number three. Tommy Arsh alongside Mickey Spagnola in the middle of team periods right now. Let’s go ahead and get right to it. Mickey has got looks like we got the second team offense working a little bit. There’s Phil Mafa at the end of that last play. a guy that Brian Shottenheimimer was very complimentary of earlier today in his press conference. Yeah, he acted like he didn’t notice him in the OTAAS in mini camp and then he said he’s showing up here. So, uh that adds another level to the depth in that running back position that they’re going to have to sort through while we’re out here. Maf certainly the biggest just in terms of pure size in that room as now the first team offense is back out there. Here’s Miles Sanders on the carry. A solid carry there for Miles Sanders. So pass Ker Elim there at the end of the play. And that was a a really nice hole, too. Sanders didn’t really have to work that hard to get to the uh second level. So, uh, compliments to the offensive line blocking on that play. And speaking of the offensive line, you might notice over at right tackle, no Terrence Steel today. There’s no word on that or why that is, but it’s Hakeem Adeny in his place. the free agent, the Cowboys sign in the off season. Well, you know, and one of the things that they’ve got to figure out is who’s going to be that third swing tackle, and I think he and Awesome Richards right now are probably the leading candidates. Prescott in the shotgun will go quick in a screen pass to CD Lamb, who bobbled it initially and then is able to turn up field. So, probably not as much as Lamb would have wanted to get on that play, but still able to Does he get credit for two catches on one pass? We’ll give it to him. Why not? Thought CD Lamb was very good in a press conference yesterday. That’s the most we’ve heard him talk in quite some time. And he was very open with the media about a number of things. His relationship with George Pickkins reflected on last year and overcoming an injury and being away from his teammates. And this is the first time he’s been at camp since 2023. I labeled him all first team podium. That is a prestigious honor that will certainly sit high on CD Lamb’s trophy cases. Javvante Williams doesn’t really get a lot there. Tom, Salomon Thomas and Sam Williams up front doing a good job of closing things down. And see, that’s something you want to see from Sam Williams. You know, when you talk about defensive ends, everybody wants to talk about sacks and quarterback hits, but those defensive ends have to set the edge uh in the running game. Otherwise, you don’t get a chance to rush to quarterback. Prescott under center. Jake Ferguson in motion. Fakes the toss to Miles Sanders and goes over the middle. Luke Skoonaker has it punched out. Demone Clark knocked it out and the run on turnovers for the Cowboys defense continuing here on day three as they go over and talk some trash to Dak Prescott. That was an excellent play by Deon Clark. It was an excellent throw by Dak. He looked the the uh defender off and threw it over the middle. Overshon’s got to be ready to hang on to it. And that after Shottenheimimer gave him some praise during the press conference today. You know what that I I don’t know if we have to factor this in, but they’re not tackling. They don’t have pads on, right? And then they’re getting hit and I don’t know if they’re it’s coming in unexpectedly or not. Only shells today. This is Yeah. some more protection after they’ve been without shells the last two days as you see the second team offense on the field now that’s Joe Milton at quarterback Duce Vaughn with the carry and his staff continuing to preach staying up and trying to not hit the ground there was a little bit too much of that in the first practice for Brian Shanheimer’s like liking saying they’re a little bit better yesterday but you can tell that he’s trying to instill discipline into his guys still see and they’re moving awesome Richards around now he’s at left tackle uh previously uh he was playing right guard too. So he’s versatile and that’s what you have to be if you’re going to be a backup offensive lineman. This is Phil Mafa on the give from the ground. So you see Brian Shanheimer coming in on the play late there. He’s frustrated. And some news here from our own Patrick Walker. Terrence Steel is getting evaluated for his right ankle. So he’s not practicing for that reason. And then linebacker Kenneth Murray also absent today for the same reason as his fellow defensive counterpart Don Bland out of corner. Both of them welcoming newborns to their family. Well, look at that. Something in the water. Good timing. All the best to them and their families as Milton lines up in the shotgun. Jaden Blue, the rookie from Texas to his left. Milton has all day to throw. Goes over the middle and connects with Paris Campbell. You saw the undrafted free agent linebacker Justin Baron kind of just a half a step late there and Milton able to fit it in. And you know, we we’ve talked about the rocket of an arm and how far he can throw it, Mickey. But I think maybe we haven’t talked enough about how quick Joe Milton can get the ball to his receivers. We saw him try to layer it a little bit yesterday and that ball hung in the air, but that time he he got it in pretty well. And and I think after watching yesterday, I thought there was too many times that he didn’t see the play quick enough. uh and chose to pull it down and run. Uh I know he can run well, but you want to be able to throw the ball on time and he was hesitant I thought too much yesterday. And now you see before this play starts, Dak Prescott came out from behind the play and stopped everything to make sure that Joe Milton and Jaden Blue were on the same page. Looks like Blue was a little confused as to which side he was supposed to be lined up on. So Prescott making sure that things are correct. Now Blue switches to the other side and goes motioning to the left of Milton. They fake it to him and Milton keeps it on the read option and that was not the right decision as Tyrus Wheat was right there waiting for him and Blue was wide open. He should have let go. Well, that’s why you learn and you know, decision making certainly on those run option plays and even the throwing the ball for Joe Milton is kind of the next level of the evaluation of his game. All right, now we’re going to red zone drills as Dak Prescott on the first team offenser back out there. There’s a quick completion over the middle to Jake Ferguson who is holding on through all kinds of contact. This defense continuously trying to punch the ball free. A lot of peanut punches going on, huh? And they were successful earlier as you saw earlier. Yeah. On in the team period. Now focusing on the red zone work. Brian Shatimer said earlier today this would be more of a individual drill based practice and we saw that in the early gun. So good to see Deone Clark out there giving him some opportunities with Kenneth Murray uh missing today. Absolutely. Prescott under center. and gives it cutting back into the middle of the field. Giovante Williams who and and and and that was a lot to do with Deone Clark. He kind of set the edge and turn the running back inside which somebody has to do. You don’t want him to get on the edge. Sam Williams, Oso, Diggy Zua, Mazy Smith, and Marshon Neland, the starting four on the defensive front there. Ron Shanimer talked about if you can get pressure with four. We’d like to keep it that way. Let’s see if they can do that here as Prescott just goes quickly to Miles Sanders. That pass a little bit low. Sanders hits the ground but pops back up and goes down the far sideline. I think Miles Sanders has put together a solid few first practices here in training camp. he has, you know, and when they went through uh the offseason uh plays, uh he was at second. So, Javvante Williams was getting uh the first shot, he was second. And they’ve kind of switched it up here the last couple days. He’s gotten more opportunities, I think, with the first team. That corner, you got Andrew Booth who had a nice pass break up on George Pickkins yesterday. Kaire Elum on the other side outside and then it’s Israel Mwamu in the slot now. He kind of motions like he’s blitzing. Prescott sees it. Good job using the cadence there to identify that as he goes back into the shotgun. If he wins that job, he’s going to be the tallest slot corner. Boy, he was open too, wasn’t he? Prescott just missed him. He had pressure caving in on him. Arshawn Neland got in there again, but I think Sam Williams too from the other side was in there and you saw Mwamu go on the blitz. So Neland beats his man and that would have been a sack for Marshon who had the first interception of camp. He kind of went out into the flat as Prescott tried to check it down on the first day and picked it off. All check down was trying to go to Miles Sanders and that time he gets in there for a sack as Joe Milton’s getting ready to lead the second team unit out now. Yeah, I think the blitz caused Dak to rush himself and he would have liked to hold the ball another uh second to let George Pickkins finish his route. Here’s Milton with the give to Deuce Vaughn who makes the man miss. And that’s a great move from Duce Vaughn who scampers in for a touchdown and will celebrate with his teammates. You see how fired up Derek Foster, the running back’s coach there, is Joe Milton celebrating with his back as they’ll go back for another rep. Now Darius Harris won’t want to have to watch that film. By the way, Donovan Ezaraku, Tyrus Wheat, Jay Dia, and Solomon Thomas up front on the defensive line here. So the rookie seventh round pick Dia lined up right over the center of Brock Hoffman there as Cavante Turpin goes in motion. Milton looking to throw checks down at Jaden Blue in the flat and Aszraaku would have got him. You see him celebrating with the defense back there but Blue keep things going again to training camp reps. But man the second round pick Donovan Asaku has put together some really good practices today and yesterday. This is two days in a row now that you see him flashing. Uh he would have blown up that play if they were in pads for sure. Uh his speed to the outside and I think, you know, he’s a little deceptive cuz I think the first knock on him was well, he might be a little too light. I don’t know. With his speed out there, uh if he’s strong enough, he can play that defensive end spot. Pretty good celebration there, too. Yeah. Are you going to hit something like that? Yeah, I’ll pay to see it. Look, he led the AAC ACC in sacks last year, so he probably knows how to celebrate. Yeah, he does. There’s Cavante Turpin over the middle from Milton. He’s Brian Seanheimer talked a little bit more about him being utilized in multiple different ways in this offense as a receiver, as a running back. We saw him take some running back snaps earlier. And you know, for a guy his stature, you think maybe sometimes you’re not able to use him as much, but it seems like he can really kind of do it all for this offense. There’s ways to get him the ball despite his size. Uh throw him those quick things, hand them the ball. I And I like the way Shottenheime is trying to utilize him in more ways. Joe Milton goes empty set here as he sends Jaden Blue out as a receiver looking to throw and lost one into the end zone and it’s picked off. Oh my, a one-handed interception by Zion Childress. The undrafted free agent out of Kentucky. What a play. Another turnover for Matt Eberloose’s year. This time Joe Milton throwing the interception. See, he’s got to be able to David overraight might be the happiest person on the planet, right? Uh he’s got to read that the back part of that defense for him to uh just kind of lob that ball over the middle. He looked like I think it was was it overshown he was trying to throw to? It looked like he was open but undercut it. So got to be careful when you’re throwing into the end zone. Yeah, he was trying to layer it over the top to Luke Skoon Maker and came up just short and Childris makes an incredible play. Joe Milton just went over to him and gave him a hug, said, “Good job, man. That was a certainly a highlight for Childress.” As Dak Prescott on the first team unit is back out there. He dumps it off to Miles Sanders and he just didn’t look that one in. It falls to the ground. Catch the ball. Got to catch the ball. That’s usually pretty important, right? Yeah. Can’t run downfield first, right? And now they’re hurry up. They’re getting to the line of scrimmage in a hurry. Tempo is something Brian Shanheimimer wants to use as Prescott takes the snap and looks to throw. Nothing going. He’s going to tuck this one and run. There’s Prescott using his legs and he’ll get in the end zone for the touchdown and lay it up over the crossbar at the end. I would have liked to known if they had pads on if Sandborn could have made that tackle cuz Dak put a pretty good move on him. Well, there’s always been a lot of talk about, you know, Dak Prescott and his legs in his 30s now. Is that something he can still do? And we’ve asked him about that several times and he said, “You know, when I need to, I will.” And those plays like that show you that he can. As now, yeah, but do you want him to? Yeah, that’s that’s a good point. Now, at the seven yd line, they’re moving inside the 10 here in this two tight ends. Spoon maker sent out. And that’s another play by Azaraku on the edge, but Malik Hooker with a one-handed interception. and Demaron Overshown leading the convoy down the far sideline as that’s a second pick in this period for Matt Iberluse’s defense and it’s Malik Hooker the veteran safety who was with Iblouse in Indianapolis getting the play there Ezrau uh had the pressure and caused that entire play and I’m thinking if you were in a real game uh you’re throwing that ball over the goal post asaku just blew flew right past Tyler Gayton on that play and was in the back field in a hurry. And now looks like there’s some confusion there as they’re trying to get a substitution off Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, and Donovan Ezaraku all on the field. Solomon Thomas out there. This is a heavier front here as the Cowboys offense going inside the five now. Well, they’re in goal line. Jay Toya is in there. CD Lamb in motion as Prescott goes quick looking for Pickkins and he’s got him for a touchdown. He beat Andrew Booth on the outside and he’s letting the far sideline where the defensive backs are standing know about it. Well, you know that play was uh exactly what Shottenheimimer was talking about the other day. He said if they got man coverage on George Pickkins, he’s open. And he was in fact open. Prescott puts it in the right spot for him. And the offense gets one back after two interceptions earlier on in this period. And now Joe Milton, the second unit coming onto the field. I’ll go just outside the 10. Looks like they’re at the 11. Two tight ends again. Milton quick pass to Paris Campbell on the outside who had some blockers downfield. So that time the screen game works. I don’t know if I just noticed it, but this is the most I’ve seen them uh utilize Campbell uh in the passing game. Had a catch yesterday, a few of them. They’ll go quickly back to the line of scrimmage here. Now the ball at the 8 yd line with Milton in the shotgun. Milton looking. He’s got Deuce Vaughn wide open and he will score. Think the officials will mark him down right around the three yd line or so there as once again David Overreet one of the happiest guys I’ve ever seen is really happy with how CJ Goodwin closed in on Vaughn there. Now you know what Shenheimer was talking about when he talked about David Overre’s excitement right he called him annoying earlier today in a in a loving way as lovingly as you can make that sound. Well that’s what you get when you get a DB uh coaching from the University of Missouri. Okay. Absolutely. Okay. Says the says the guy who’s wearing every journalist needs to come from Missou Cowboys hoodie today. [Music] Jaden Blue. Yeah, that took a little too long to develop. Couldn’t get the hole there and it allowed the defense to penetrate with that long handoff. And so now the Cowboys offense inching closer and closer to the goal line. We got third like it’s at the one. Third and one. I heard somebody say third and three. It’s third and one. So again, a heavier package. You see a number of defensive linemen up front there. Payton Turner, Sam Williams, James Houston, the newest signing Cowboys made after he had a successful try out. Milton sends Phil Mafa out of the back field and he’ll go empty set and now checking things in the line of scrimmage. I think I saw Tommy in there too. The King Bot, the rookie out of Maryland as Milton looks to throw. It’s coming right towards us and it is caught by Jaylen Craropper for the touchdown. That one came right towards Mickey. He could have made the catch if he wanted to. That would have been I had to drop the mic. I think he got one foot in. I don’t know if he got the second, but nonetheless, that will do it for the team periods today. And Cavante Turpin now in front of us says it’s a touchdown. So, we will listen to him. That’s going to do it for us here on Training Camp Live for Mickey Spagnolo. I’m Tommy Y. Thanks for hanging out with us and we’ll see you later on this week. [Music]
On the sidelines at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Tommy Yarrish and Mickey Spagnola observe and analyze some of the team periods, including a red zone 11 on 11 sequence, where the Cowboysβ defense came up with several turnovers and the offense responded with big plays of their own.
