Spencer Horwitz Hits 1st Career Grand Slam in Win | Tigers vs. Pirates Game Highlights (7/23/25)

Pirates a chance to sweep the team that had the best record in baseball coming in Monday night. The Pirates send Lefty Bailey Falter to the hill trying to rebound from a couple of rough starts, ground ball to start the All Star torres. Good way to begin the game for Bailey Falter. That one stays fair. Has that metronome inside his head and knows just how much time he needs swing. And a Miss Perez strikes out 1234 Falter Tigers today will send Troy Melton to the mound. This is always exciting, dan, but I think especially exciting because Troy Melton was in a ball last year. He’s worked his way to the major leagues because of how well he’s pitched with the power arms. Can’t wait to live through him and share this excitement today with Troy Melton. His family came all the way from Southern California sisters here. His mom and dad Charles and Tracy Melton sister Christina, as well as this is a line drive right at Jy Baez. That is, I would venture to say the best shortstop he’s played in front of in his career and one away J claims the first out of Troy Melton’s career. You want to get that first big league hitter out? Yes, it was hit hard right at J made a nice play, but now you can kind of settle in and let the game come to you. That struck well, deep center field from the cut. He hits it out of here. Home run for Andrew Mccutchen. What a rude greeting by one of the greats. Melton won’t forget that anytime soon. One pirates that just get some of those first out of the way quickly. You got to get your first out. You got to give, you’re going to give up a homer at some point, get it out of the way early. Here’s matt Beerling 12 pitch, fly ball to center Cruz is back that’s hit well to the wall and at the wall, Cruz jumps up and makes the catch. He still had, oh good two strides before he reached the ball, but he thought it was closer. And so he kind of jumped up ready to bang up against the wall, but makes the grab here with a slider away and another 123 innings for Bailey Falter second walk of the inning and now loaded up for Kiner-Falefa and this is a moment where he’s a rookie pitcher making his major league debut. You see it so often don’t know if he’s rattled or not. And this is where you just got to lock in. You got to go after him. Melton on and two called strike three, his first major league strikeout on a breaking ball on the inside corner. That was the entire menu of stuff from Melton. You’re not out of it now. He faces Spencer Horowitz bases loaded. A big swing to break it open. Keep bowing your neck. Really make some pitches. There’s a drive to right center field deep to the wall. Much. CIN spencer Horowitz. it’s a lovey time. His third pirate homer. You talk about a game changing at bat spencer for hire. He’s got to jump right back on the pony and keep going. Especially with no off day until like he’s going to have to get out here and get through some innings bucks up five zip on the Tigers, Troy Melton, the rookie pitcher, his major league debut. He’s given up a pair of home runs. Reynolds over to with one out in a five game o’neill Cruz, the infield comes in 12 pitch and a fly ball to center field plenty deep to score a run. That will be a sacrifice fly as Meadows makes the catch ribby for Cruz. Reynolds coasts home Pirates lead six nothing in the third inning. Liber torres faces Bailey Falter again to the opposite field. Good jump by Brian reynolds. Little extra loft in your step when your pitcher hasn’t allowed anything yet. I like the way he looked like a strike, the strikes. Billy Fter retires the 1st 11 batters of this game the most to start his career. That is a line drive to left and a base hit. So the first baserunner, the first hit today for the Tigers is Weell Perez. Here is torque high pop foul territory. He’s a notable guy from Taylor Alder Fencer Horowitz will make the catch at first with one out 60 Pittsburgh in the fourth inning. Flee at the plate melton in his major league debut gets his swing and a miss that is strike three on a breaking ball strikeout. Number three for Elton, it would be close swing and a breaking ball down. That was the splitter. Oritz went too far in the C check swing on the appeal to third CB Buckner rings up the hottest hitter going right now for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Matt Beerling leads off against Bailey Falter. There’s a swing and a miss at a high fastball. The strikeout base hit for Mckinstry with one out in the fifth. Dylan Dingler. The other two pitch called third strike inside corner to Dylan Dingler. Second k of the inning five on the day for Falter runner goes from first pitches grounded to short back can play. Kiner-Falefa throws on to first gets Baez and that’s five shutout innings for Bailey Falter strikeout number six for me who has each of his last four outs have been recorded via the strikeout. Here’s Cruz who singled in a sacrifice fly has to get through. Reynolds turns the bag heads to third. Cruz is two for two today. Love him to get through this inning. Absolutely. Let him get through five and just keep the score right here. Then just leave like, hey, you know, leave with two shutout innings. Pham hopes to put a punctuation mark on it. Cruz taken off and he’s got another stone base the second day trying to get in scoring position with two outs. Now baseball’s leader again, 33 steals for Cruz. That’s a good finish for Troy Melton. Maybe some frustration of the way it started. I think he’s going to take out of this game a strong finish over his last three innings. Parker Meadows leads off sixth inning. There’s a swing and a miss closer to home plate than most pitchers. And that is six K’s for Bailey Fter two outs here and he pops this ball up foul territory room for Spencer Horowitz as he approaches the netting makes the catch 123 for Bailey Fter Blanking. The Tiger is going to the bottom of the sixth inning six nothing. Bucko Bailey Falter back on the hill to start this seventh inning. One of the hits off of him. We Perez is at the plate singled in the fourth. Here’s the 02 called third strike seven K’s and that was right down the money. His longest outing of his major league career is seven and two thirds. That was last year at Wrigley field on May the 18th and he is going to challenge that here today. A one out double. Here’s matt right field that is down. It’s a hit for veering off the backhand side. Reynolds. He’ll keep him to a single. But there’s run number one for the Tigers just trying to put on a little game pressure late on this Wednesday. Mckinstry reaches two outs. Here’s Dylan Dingler pitch. Did he go? Yes, he did on the appeal to the first base umpire dan I, and if that is it for Fter, that’s one of his better starts of the season as he strikes out his eighth. Torres at the plate has grounded out lined out and flied to center 32 pitch, fly ball to center field. Cruz started back now comes in and makes a diving catch. He gets up and shakes his right hand. He trots toward home and, uh, looks like he’s gonna be ok one more out to get Carmen Magy for the Pirates. The pitch swinging and a miss struck him out. Pirates. Sweep the Tigers. Raise the Jolly Roger all three games dominated the Tigers, all three games from the pitchers mound from the batter’s box defensively, baserunning all phases.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-1 at PNC Park on July 23, 2025. Andrew McCutchen homered and Spencer Horwitz hit his first career grand slam, while Bailey Falter tied his career-high with eight strikeouts.

  1. Congratulations, Spence, I'm so proud of you bubeleh;
    you've become quite the mensch! 🕎 💖 🏃 🏃🏿 🏃🏽 🏃🏼
    Bucs played an impressive series Hoist the 🏴‍☠!

  2. I was fixated on Elly de la Cruz for a while but clearly I had the wrong Cruz (although Elly is great!) as O’Neal is some kind of alien, with something like 75% of the hardest hit baseballs in MLB all year and had a throw clocked at 105mph!!! I’d definitely try him out in spot relief (like a teenage Nolan Ryan) just to scare the shit out of the opposition.
