Jaguars Training Camp Competition, Coughlin Rules & GM Post-Draft To-Do List | Jacksonville Jaguars
He can JP Shadrick and welcome in. It is Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Heritage of North Florida, Jacksonville’s premier roofing and remodeling company. JP Shadric, Jeff Loggan. Here’s what’s coming up on the program today. Training camp is underway and we’ll get to Travis Hunter’s practice schedule. It is robust. A ramp up period is upon us now. The Jags will put on pads next week, Monday and Tuesday, and then the debut of the Liam Cohen show at 5:00 on the Jaguars Radio Network without Liam Cohen. He’ll be with us starting in the regular season. We are scheduled to have James Gladstone and Tony Baselli in studio and we won’t get a word in Edgewise. Jeff Logan, good afternoon. Good afternoon. You are a hairy fellow in certain areas. Are you uh you trying to grow beard like me? I’m trying to grow up and be like Jeff Lago in so many ways. You’re looking good. Thanks, man. Trimmed it up. I like it. I was looking a little grizzly for a while, but I decided, you know what? I’m going to keep it. I like it. Um, it shows a little of my experience. Shave the top. Groom the the, you know, I ain’t shaving the top. I mean, it might ever come back if I do that. Uh, if I use the Bick razor. No chance. Back to work. We’re back, baby. Back to camp. It’s um it’s yeah it’s been good first two days of camp ramp up period a little light like an hour you weren’t here the first day but about an hour or so then they went up to about an hour and 20 minutes today and they keep doing that the first four or so say I’m I’m a little jealous you know I think you are we always talk about the old days yeah I mean you know I’m not I don’t ever want to be one of those guys but uh you know you always one of those but I mean seriously like you know me and Belli used to have these discussions all the time and He he was like, “I can’t believe how easy they got it now.” And I and I used to always say that it should have been like this 20 years ago. I mean, it really should have been. I mean, it would have been fantastic. It would had, I think, uh, lasting effects on your long-term health. It would have made the career longer, possibly would have made for, I think, less injuries because of the wear and tear that can happen through the old rules. But, uh, but I like the way it is set up. I’m not one of these old guys that goes, “Oh, these guys should have two days and and full pads every day.” No, you just wish you had this is what you’re saying. Well, I I just think this is this is what is best for the game. I really do. I really believe that this is best for the game and and I look forward to watching this team progress to the point of pads just because from an analyst standpoint that’s where you really kind of get the nuts and bolts of your evaluation is when they go to pads and you can really see what the big guys can do because right now I can’t tell you anything about any of the big guys. They all look good. You can see a little bit of the timing with wide receivers and quarterbacks, you know, but that all can change too. All of a sudden, defensive backs have pads on and they’re making contact with you in your route. It changes the timing and just a little teaser. We’ll get to all of this. Um, along those lines, because you can really evaluate the skill position players, I thought that Trevor Lawrence might have had one of his best days yet of the 2025 off season into training camp so far. today. I thought he had a really solid day. Uh I thought he had command of the offense. He looks really good physically. I guess he got an 85 out of 100 on his test. You know, let’s hear from him on that cuz he was asked yesterday first day of camp about the offseason coming back to camp and um let’s call it a B so far after the test. Common? No, it’s not common. Uh it was it was pretty difficult and not all the questions. Some of them were some layups, but I mean yes, there were some good there were some good questions in there, some tough ones that kind of got us back get us back going for camp and get the minds going and you know all the stuff you have to do as a quarterback. It was good. It kind of encompassed our whole offense and whether it’s scheme protections, it was a lot of stuff that was good to do as like one of our first days back to kind of make sure we’re ready to go and we’ve been looking over our stuff this offseason. I think he said it was an 85. So that’s a strong B, which is means there’s wrong. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. There’s no such thing as a strong B. No, you could have a B minus. A strong B would be a B+. Okay. It’s just a B. Okay. Right. I mean, 85 is a B. It’s a solid B, right? But it means there’s room to improve. No, I could be a whole lot. I like that idea. I mean, look, get the player back into the mindset of, hey, look, you know, what did you do while you were away? Did you study? Did you hone in? Did you take a playbook with you to the Bahamas besides just, you know, throwing the ball around with some of the guys a little bit on the side? I mean, so I like it. I mean, it’s I think we need to do like pre-season training in the Bahamas. Like let’s just go. We’ll we’ll have like two coconuts and pretend they’re microphones and we can practice broadcasting, right? We can work on the intro and then we can cut the coconuts in half and add a little bit of rum to it on the inside and then we’re golden. Sounds like a plan. the broadcast will get better because we drank the coconut. Yeah, we might not remember how we did it, but whatever. No, but I I like that. Physically, he looks great. I mean, I think uh he’s as big as I’ve ever seen him, but it’s it’s all in the right places. You know, he looks in great shape, so I’m excited for him. Uh along those lines with the the seven on seven stuff that we were talking about, there were a couple defensive backs and the defensive back room as a whole, I thought had a very good day. And people what might ask, well, how can Trevor have a good day? And then the defensive backs have a good day. Well, last time I checked, there’s a few quarterbacks on the roster. In fact, there’s one, two, three, four. So, it’s not all on Trevor if the DBs make a play. So, uh, defensive backs had a good day as well. I I I like I like the ramp up period. I think it’s great. And uh and I’m looking forward to the pads though because I really believe that that’s where this offense needs to take a huge step forward. It’s with the big guys up front. We’ll get to a little more of the offense coming up. Certainly the defense and the DB’s day today. They had a good one. Uh that’s a little bit later. We’re on 1010 XL 92.5 FM. Jaguars.com and Jaguars YouTube. It is Jaguars happy hour. We are back for training camp and PRI Productions, the official event production company of the Jags, has everything you need to bring your next idea to life. Visit priouroductions.com. JT Shadric, Jeff Loaman. Well, the other big story of training camp so far is Travis Hunter, wide receiver, defensive back. You might have heard of who? The number two overall pick, of course. Uh he’s been working at wide receiver so far, right, on offense. And then during special teams, correct, he’s been going to the other field and going through some walkth through things with defensive coaches and not wasting a minute of practice at all. Yeah. Typically, for example, going back to most rookies when they come in. Okay. They they really limit the focus to allow the rookie to put on blinders to to concentrate on singular purposes, singular jobs. Okay. with Travis Hunter. Obviously, that’s not the case, but they want to allow him to focus on on offense in particular because I think it requires a little bit more timing, um, understanding of the scheme, the verbiage. That’s that that takes a lot more than on the defensive side of the ball. So, I think there will be a a lean towards the offensive side of the ball as far as the number of practices go if you actually calculated them up at the end of the year. But during the course of practice, like today, Travis Hunter is working with the wide receivers. And then during special teams drill, some wide receivers have to play special teams. Yes. Okay. Some of them do. Parker Washington’s going to be a special teams player. Other guys can be gunners and get down there. Um Tim uh what was a guy that was here last couple years uh that was a wide receiver, played a lot on special teams. Tim Jones. Tim Jones was a core special teams player. A lot of the wide receivers gonna are gonna have to be that. Travis Hunter’s not in that category. No, no, no. So, every time Well, that would be the ultimate 60minute man. I mean, he’s playing. Yeah. We don’t need We don’t need to try that. Come on now. He could probably do it though. I mean, I I wouldn’t put anything past them. Yeah. But when they go to those special teams periods, which I think they have about three of them during the course of a practice. Me and you broadcast the practice. You remember it was like three, right? three big periods in practice, right? So, when those three special teams periods are in, Travis Hunter is over there with Campanelli, the defensive coordinator, and the defensive backs coach, and they’re going over scheme and techniques. Now, they’re not asking him to uh do backpedal drills or anything like that because look, you know, you want to make sure that you limit the uh the miles on the body just like any other player in training camp, but at least taking him through the mental aspects of a practice so that he has it all on his mind fresh. Now, I’m here to tell you JP, I’m not saying the football is rocket science because it’s not. Okay? But I played on the easier side of the football to learn, which is defense. I You said that, not me. And I’ve heard that some of the verbiage. Okay. And Liam Con’s offense is a little thorough. Okay. Like um like really thorough. Um yeah, pretty thorough. Okay. It’s Spider two wide banana like uh it’s all kind. Yeah. All kinds of things. All all kinds of things. So there there’s a lot of motion shifts, adjustments. Yeah. Exactly. So, uh, you know, so with Travis, I mean, he’s got a lot to learn. Got a lot to learn. He is, uh, he’s going to have to be spending some time uh, when he’s not on the field or or in the facility, he’s going to have to he’s going to have to sleep with his playbook. He really is. I mean, that’s not going to be easy for him. And I thought he had a good day today. I you know during the uh the OTAAS just watching him he was he was doing it and he’s an individual period he was you know 100% 100 miles an hour and then when he got the team you could tell that there was just sometimes a little bit of hesitancy in the OTAAS because you’re still trying to figure out what you’re supposed to do and uh and I think today there were moments where he was a little bit hesitant but there was one play in particular you might remember it u I think it Tre Trevor hits him on a checkdown and it was at about 10 12 yards down the field and then all of a sudden then you saw the talent take over because as soon as he made the catch he turned up field and then it was another gear and was just running away from everybody else and it was just like okay that’s that’s the guy that you know you’ve watched on film at Colorado and he’s playing fast. That was good to see. Let’s hear from the head coach Liam Cohen earlier this week, yesterday in fact, asked about the balance of time for Travis Hunter. As we’ve said, the first couple days on offense could flip that over in the next few days to defense mainly. That could change as camp goes along and beyond. According to the head coach, a span where maybe he practiced on offense, let’s call it a Thursday because we didn’t do anything on the Fridays and then he had Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and then Monday he was on defense. That’s like four days without doing anything on offense. Well, we learned that it was too long, right? That’s too long to kind of go without doing anything on maybe the other side of the ball. So, we learned something there. And we also um within these blocks where we’re kind of three days on with an off day, it allows us to map it out maybe a little bit cleaner and give him more opportunities. But every single day that he is on one side of the ball, he will meet with the other side of the ball at least once, maybe twice as well. So trying to not let that happen where he goes offense, offense, then practice on defense, but he hasn’t heard a single thing on the defensive side of the ball in two days. So we absolutely learned and I could see it continue to evolve this training camp. Yeah, that’s the approach from the head coach and and with that approach there is no uh room for anything except locked in vision from that player. I mean there’s you cannot have any distractions at all. It’s got to be all ball all the time. Well, and I I like listening to Liam Con talk about the process because you kind of admitted there that look uh we tried something, okay, we felt like we needed to improve upon it and they took action to change it. And when the the whole uh I think uh plan that was announced initially with Travis Hunter included the words fluid and he’s exactly right and that’s and that’s good that they they see something um they see the results they maybe say let’s tweak it a little bit and let’s change it to make it better. And and I like that. And from the very get-go, they said that it’s kind of a work in progress and it and it probably will remain a work in progress throughout the course of the year. You know, I think you just, you know, what’s the old term? Adapt and adjust. And I think that that’s going to be, I think, the philosophy throughout the year with Travis and because, you know, look, nobody’s ever done this before. There’s not a road map that, hey, you know, Joe Smith did it last year, so let’s just do what Joe Smith did. Well, there’s no Joe Smith, and he’s probably not as good. If there was, probably not. No, they didn’t trade up to number two against you know, again, it’s it’s such a a curiosity, a point that I think everybody around the league that’s big fans of the league are going to follow. And, you know, look, in Jacksonville, we’re going to have a front row seat to it. And I and I’m excited to see it. I’m excited to see it. And, you know, the one thing that you you want to make sure that there’s an old saying, right? Jack of all trades, master of none. M you want to make sure that you can get the preparation for for Travis that he is a master of two. Okay. Offense and defense and not just a a jack of trades, master of none. Uh when was the last time you went jogging, Jeff? Uh it’s probably been a minute. 20 years ago. Wow. Yeah. I I don’t Yeah, this body does not jog. Okay. Um, I won’t tell you how long it’s been for me either, but you can get ready. Those who do jog for the Jaguars 5K Sports Complex Challenge. I couldn’t do a 1K. It’s Saturday, August 23rd. That’s the main thing. That is Trayvon Walker, Jaguars defensive end. It is hard to believe he’s entering year number four in the NFL. He’s a big strong good football player. Yes. Time flies. Certainly. That’s Jeff Logan. I’m JP Shadrick. It’s Jaguars happy hour from the Hyundai Studios on 1010 XL a.m. 92.5 FM. Jaguars.com. Jaguars YouTube all the places as we begin 2025 training camp at the Miller Electric Center. Glad you’re with us on Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Heritage of North Florida, Jacksonville’s premier roofing and remodeling company. That leads us into defensive talk. You said, “Okay, yeah, the line you’re not going to get a great look at early in camp because no pads are on.” No. But as we mentioned earlier, the back end of the defense actually had some plays today. A lot of deflected balls, couple interceptions. Uh Ransaw, the rookie draft pick, made a nice play along the sideline. Antonio Johnson had an interception at one point. So they seemed active today on the back end and they’re a long way from finding whatever solution they’re going to have for a starting lineup. Ransaw, the play that he made, it literally or we thought it was going to be a completion and then Ransaw immediately just punches that ball out. Great great ball awareness by by the young rookie and Antonio Johnson. great anticipation, jumps the ball, makes an interception, you know, and he’s a guy that last year we were incredibly excited for. I thought that uh he was going to be able to take a big jump from year one to year two just because his athleticism, I think, is and size and his versatility, I think, is unmatched. I mean, it’s and last year just turned into a a tough year for him. And uh so I hope they get him dialed back in because I really believe that he’s got some some some skills, especially ball skills. So, but the back end of the defense, I mean, if you’re looking at this football team from uh an an improvement standpoint, that position group, the defensive backfield might be the most improved overall on They did the most work on paper, you know, on paper most changes. Well, you had, you know, you participated in free agency with, you know, at safety position, the corner position, and then you utilize some draft capital at that position group. So, a lot one year, you know, so when you invest in it, and we’ll have James Gladstone in here to talk about that here. We’re going to get some answers out of him. We are some answers. You can’t hide anymore. When you invest in a position, you want some return. And I I think that this team is going to see some returns at that position. Yeah. Uh it seems that way so far. Um by the way, not just uh a couple other guys to highlight there were in the in the very last period and I’ll go to two plays to BTJ. Brian Thomas Jr. who who by the way is so fast and runs so hard and practices at full speed which is super impressive. There was a last period they throw a deep ball and Trevor just launched it. I mean, launched it and right between the hash marks deep down the field. I mean, and impressive. It was like, hold your breath. This is this is gonna be it. And DeAndre Prince makes a great play. Yeah. And breaks it up. And it was a play that you thought for sure it was a guaranteed home run. BTJ is not going to drop it. Credit DeAndre Prince. Heck of a play. another one down the boundary that Trevor threw and and it wasn’t a great throw by Trevor. He’s got to give his wide receiver a little bit better chance because it went out of bounds, but it was to Brian Thomas Jr. as well. And Tyson Campbell was right in the pocket of BTJ. So, defensive back, strong day. And again, I’m going back to what I said. You know, when when this team played the Green Bay Packers and you watched the Green Bay Packers leading up to the game, my film study, it was one of the most disciplined um uh hard playing defenses in all the National Football League that I saw on film last year. So, if Campanelli can bring some of that to this football team this year, then compared to where we were last year, it’ll be a monumentous jump. Jordan Lewis making some plays, too. Ninth year defensive back, cornerback from Michigan. Yeah. And he, you know, and it’s a three cornerback league. Yes. And who who as of today picked the three corners? Well, Tyson, Lewis, and then uh Travis Hunter. Okay. You know, you’ve got other guys that are working in there. Uh, look, Jarian Jones had a good year last year as a rookie. He’s got some size. He’s physical. I think he’s going to be in the mix. You know, depending on where Travis Hunter is at. I think Trey Prince is a guy uh that has a really strong skill set for man. Uh, what will this team look like? Will it be more man than zone or more zone than man? What are you doing with Mont Brown? Wait to see Montic Brown. What are you doing with him? I like him. I think I thought that last year he special he might have been the best corner on this roster last year, right? Better than Tyson because Tyson was a little nicked up here and there. So I I think he’s right in the mix too. I mean those are the things that you’ve kind of as a if you’re a coach or if you’re a general manager and here we are talking about oh oh yeah we forgot Montter Brown. Well, you got some options. And the options also interpret or lead you to the conversation about competition. And competition is what makes people get better. It’s what makes position groups elevate their level of play. And that’s what you’re looking for. Jaguars happy hour. JP Shadrick with Jeff Logan. Um, let’s continue on defense at the linebacker position. And everybody kind of looks at that big number zero that’s out there in the white jersey on the defensive side in practice. Devin Lloyd, year number four, former first round pick, has been inconsistent so far. What does this defense do for him? I think it’s a question we still have to have answered over the coming weeks of training camp. And that’s and that’s a it’s it’s an interesting question and I don’t know if I can answer that because I think time will tell on that because Devin Lloyd last year I thought had uh some struggles. He he got bigger this year. He’s back to to being lean. Looks like he can run better, which in this defense you got to be able to run. It seems like a theme for the entire group last year, by the way. Everybody was bigger. Yeah. And uh kind of got carried away with it, you know. It was like uh okay, everybody wants to get bigger, faster, stronger. But let’s remember, let’s get bigger, faster, stronger, but still be able to play 65 snaps at the same speed. And in Travis Hunter’s case, maybe 120 snaps. Okay, which is mindboggling. Um, but you know, before we talk about Devin, I think you got to go and talk about Foyer Luan because I still can’t believe that they moved him to the will position last year and I’m going to keep saying that and for the next decade or more. It was one of the dumbest moves in all of football. Guy had missed a snap in like four years all of a sudden he’s got to come off the field and I get it. I well on on then that’s a whole another discussion. Yeah. You’re gonna take the NFL’s leading tackler over the last four or five years, however long it was, and you’re going to move him to the will position. I was like, why are we doing that again? But now he’s back to normal, right? He’s back to the mic position where he’s comfortable at. And and and I had a talked with him for about I don’t know 10 15 minutes today. and he’s one of my favorite players because he’s committed, he prepares, he studies, he is uh he’s one of those guys that you can always count on. And in this game, if you don’t have the word dependability attached to you, it’s tough, right? I mean, this is one of those games where that’s got to be kind of the first thing that that goes to your name plate, dependability. and having Foyer move back to the mic position, having Foyer healthy again. He had some wrist issues, some core issues that he dealt with, and he said that I feel as good as I ever have in a long time. And so to have that, that’s outstanding. Had a foot issue last year, if you remember, back early in camp kind of slowed him up. So having him back at where he belongs, where he never should have been moved from, having him back healthy again and in the leadership role of the defense because I think he is a front of the huddle guy by far the number one guy that needs to be there and that will help Devin is the stability of having the mic position squared away with foyer and that will obviously filter down to everybody else. But look, there’s going to be some position uh battles going on there at the other position. I think Foy is your guy at the mic. Well, he drafted a kid from Notre Dame, Jack Kaiser, who’s going to compete in there for that position. Um with Devin Lloyd, and and so that to me is going to be a fun position to watch to see where that ends up. At the very least, I think you’re going to get a better version of Devin Lloyd than what we saw last year, which is very encouraging for this team. Plenty ahead. We will come back in a moment. We’ve got to get in the running back room. Speaking of competitions, that that that’s probably the offensive version to the defensive backs. you know that we we talk about competition and depth at that defensive back position which I say corner safety nickel all lumped together in that but the running back position might be that version on offense. We’ll dig into it when we return and from the backyard to the beaches. The Ford F-150 with available pro power on board gives you the power of a mobile generator. They’ll both join us at the same time at 5:00 on the Liam Cohen show on the Jaguars Radio Network. That’s good. That’s great. It’s going to be fantastic. We’ll let them uh suck all the air out of the room and talk. That’d be great. I’ll just be right here to throw it to Braith whenever it’s time. Uh, for sure. Now, I’m excited because you know what? As a I got questions for both of them, obviously, but as a general manager, once you get to this point, a lot of times people think, well, the general manager manager’s job is done. Okay, there’s your roster. Go ahead and now coach them up and win football games. I I think want to delve into now what, you know, for James Gladstone, you know, and then also I would love to hear what he has to say about the cap situation for this team because the health of the cap at this moment and the ability to um add to this roster maybe, but then also in the years ahead, what is the outlook on that? because sometimes that’s not really at the forefront of people’s minds when a team is not winning. They just want to know how can we get better players, but in order to get better players, you’ve got to have a healthy cap. So, I think that’ll be a great conversation. It’s coming up 5:00 on the Liam Cohen show on the Jaguars Radio Network. Well, let’s get into it. On the offensive side, the running back room is of interest. Here are the five that are on the roster. Travis ETN Jr., fifth year. Tank Bsby third year, Bash Tutin, rookie. Laquent Allen Jr. out of Syracuse, a rookie, and Jaquindon Jackson, a rookie out of Arkansas. Five running backs on the roster. And this should be an interesting watch over the next month. I think it really will be. And Jackson’s a big dude, and don’t count him out because he’s not really one that’s I think gets a lot of conversation because he’s undrafted. He’s never been around. um you know and you’ve got two draft picks ahead of him and with Tootton and Laquin Allen I think this might be the most interesting watch in all of camp and I think it was you that posed the question to me today that uh so who’s your running back? Yeah. You know what’s your running what who’s your running backs on game day? That’s right. And my answer to that is is that you know how do you make that decision based on where we are right now which is hard but then also I think all of these guys have a skill set that’s going to help this football team and when you have a lot of guys in the room which by the way that this might be the healthiest this room has been and I’m not talking about top end like going back to the Fred Taylor Moraurice Jones Junior Jr days because that was special but overall the depth in this room I I think is spectacular and it’s I think it’s been neglected over the last number of years and right now I think it’s a a real positive for this football team. And when you get to that point, much like the Bucks were in, you know, last year, you’ve got a couple running backs that you feel good about, who’s got the hot hand? You know, when you get a hot hand and you just roll with it. You know, the interesting thing too to about this conversation is is that sometimes running backs have the ability to be special teams contributors. Who can do that role? Quinn Allen, I think, is going to have to do some of that because I think his focus is going to be on being a third down back and a special teamer. Basel Tootin, I think, is guy that can tote the rock and carry the load. And the same thing goes for ETN and and Tank Bsby. Tank Bsby had a move today. Oh, he came through, broke through the line, safety coming up on him. And obviously, it’s no pads. Nobody’s going to hit anybody, you know, but the defender’s trying to square up on him. I mean, he made that guy go, you know, five yards to the right as he cut to the left. I mean, it was a beautiful cut. and Tank Bsby Toutin. Both of these guys though, if you go back to our broadcast of the practice, we were announcing to the fans right out of the gate. What was the first period? Ball security drill. And that’s got to be a point of emphasis because no team is going to win if they turn the ball over a ton. Got two running backs in that room with Tank Bsby and Bashel Tutin. And obviously Tootton in college, but Bsby here got to hold on to the rock and ball security’s got to be an absolute premier point with both of those guys. Travis Eten Jr. is going into year number five is a rookie contract. They got the fifthear option. How would you grade his career up to this point? Who picked up the fifth year option? That would have been last off season, right? That’s right. Okay. And so you have a new staff, you know, new draft picks and, you know, new competition, fresh fresh slate for everybody. Absolutely. So, uh, that’s going to be an interesting watch. How would you grade his career so far? I think he’s been solid, but he’s been, uh, hurt a little bit and that’s and look, when you’re hurt a lot. I mean, missed his whole rookie year. I mean, when you’re hurt that much, I mean, that’s very difficult. But, you know, here’s the reality. The fifth year option on a running back is not incredibly high. I don’t think six and a half million something. Yeah. I mean, okay. I mean, that’s not 15 million like uh Cook wants in Buffalo. Well, he’s a different kind of player as his contract is. Yeah, absolutely. But uh yeah, he’s got to stay healthy. And here’s the reality. In the past, if you had an injury to ETN, who was up next? Well, I mean, before Bsby, you really didn’t have an option by committee kind. And now you got Bsby, but now you also have two other guys that are pretty good. And and and I say two other guys. I look again, I don’t want to count out Jackson because he’s in the mix as well. And he’s a big dude. 6’2 233 to Quinden Jackson. He’s all a 230 whatever. I don’t want to be in his way. I mean, it’s noticeable. I want to see that guy tote the rock when it’s live. I do. I I I haven’t watched any college film on him yet. Uh but he moves really well. He’s got a lot of size. Um let’s see him in action. You never know. There’s been a lot of undrafted running backs that have had great success. Oh, absolutely. in the National Football League going all the way back to the old name Washington Redskins had one who I think he by the way he was a Super Bowl MVP instead of like a Super Bowl record uh Smith I believe his name was Smith anyway Tim something or other I mean he was amazing may have had an amazing day in this day and age too like not many running backs are going high so the the more value you can get late the more chips you can throw at it then Okay, let’s let’s get some running backs. Well, and you need you really need that room to have an impact this year. They’re going to run the ball. They’re going to run the ball. They’re going to run the ball with Liam Cohen. They will throw the ball a little bit. You know, you go back to last year when they had two receivers, premier receivers hurt with the Bucks and all a sudden you have Baker Mayfield throwing the ball 50 times in a game. Says, “Well, not exactly what you would expect.” But Liam Comb believes in running the football and last year if you look at the the way they ran the ball, they got a hot running back and they just and got better and better as the year progressed with the offensive line and and also the running game. So take advantage of it when you can and I hope that it’s strong. It starts out strong for a quarterback and an offense that’s the first time you’re in it. It’s a much smoother transition into all of that when you’ve got a strong running game. And again, we with the running game, it all begins up front, the O line, but two days into practice, we’ll hold a lot. They still they still look like they did a month ago, right? We’ll hold off a lot of that until the pads come on next week. Monday, Tuesday, and then next week we’ll talk about that. We’ll probably dig into it. Yeah, we’ll dig into that next week for sure. There’ll be a lot of uh two days of pads. We’ll have two or three days in pads. Monday and Tuesday, and then they’re off Wednesday and then pads on Thursday. I think I think in pads on Thursday, too. I got the schedule right here. Lots. So, we can we’ll have three days, I think, to pads Monday, Tuesday, and then spiders Thursday. Okay. We’ll have two days of pads to evaluate. Yeah. Again, Friday, next week. I like it. And then scrimmage on Saturday. Uh scrimmage. Scrimmage on Friday. That’s the pads Friday. Friday. Friday night. Cool. And people can go there, I heard. Yeah, you can register. jaguars.com/training camp mock game. I like it. That’s always fun to to get in the stadium and we’ll have by that time we’ll have an idea of how to get in the stadium. There’s a lot of construction going on. We’ll give you the latest of course when that comes around as part of the there’ll be some orange signs that says detour. Just follow the sign. Follow the person in front of you. We’ll get to that of course closer to scrimmage time. Jags fans want customized Jags furniture for your home. And one of the beautiful things about football is um it can be so personnel and package oriented, you know, based on the opponent, you know, what they’re putting out there from a personnel perspective or who those guys actually are, what’s the best matchup. A lot of times that decides who you play uh and who’s playing in the game. So, we try to do that all the way through, you know, all the way through uh to the end of the season. And I think that’s a big part of evaluation as a coach. Anthony Campanito, the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Welcome back. It’s Jaguar’s happy hour. Neil Nelly, he’s good with both. He’s It’s who he is. As long as he’s okay. As long as you That’s He’s The one thing he’s not worried about is the pronunciation of his name. No, he’s he’s good with either way, you know. And um I asked Foyer about him. I said, “How do you like him?” He goes, “Man,” he goes, “I come from the Northeast.” He goes, “I like that kind of brash, you know, uh edge that he’s got.” He says, “That’s kind of what I’m used to.” I said, “Good, good. I like it.” Love that. Uh we are on 1010 XL a.m. Jaguars.com 92.5 FM Jaguars YouTube all the places for Jaguars happy hour and coming up in about 12 minutes or so a little less than that. It’s the Liam Cohen show. No coach this week but Tony Belli and James Gladstone will step in uh at the start of the show we’re told to uh join us. So that’s coming up in just a few minutes time. Uh time now for the injury report presented by UF Health the proud healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. two players on the physically unable to perform list, active list. So that means that they can get out there and do some side work. Dennis Gard brought in in the off season, eighth year player out of Sou Falls, was in Arizona his entire professional career, had an ACL injury last season, I think week seven, so he’s off to the side getting work done on the PUB list. And then Mason Smith on the defensive line, of course, draft pick fairly recently, is off to the side as well on the PUP list. Those are the two notables at least early in camp. Yeah. And uh look, with Mason Smith, I mean, the they don’t have to disclose injuries at this state point of the year. Correct. And so they’re not talking about it. From what I do understand, though, is that it’s nothing serious. They’re just kind of taking some prec precautions with Mason. Uh he’s worked his tail off all year. I mean, worked his tail off. Has stayed here, worked hard. Um has changed his body, looks really good, and uh the one thing that I want to see him really mature with is his mindset a little bit. And that in the past you would see he he plays hard, he practices hard, but sometimes he’s a little extracurricular after the whistle stuff. I mean, he’s got to keep his energy focused to the stuff between the whistle and and that’s okay, but sometimes that’s Look, I was that way a little bit when I was a younger player. Um, was more than willing to participate a little in things after the whistle. Yeah, you’re not uh free of any of these charges either, by the way. That’s what I’m saying. I and Mason’s such a good guy and he’s got you see the the just the measurables, the size, the he’s got all the tools and I thought last year in training camp he was the best interior pass rusher this team had. I’m talking hands down. But once the game started, you know, now you got a assignment responsibility, you know, the mind makes things slow down a little bit and the production wasn’t quite exactly where you wanted it, but this is a player that I believe is really going to develop. You know, you go back to Marcus Straoud, and I’m not saying that he’s going to be Marcus Straoud, but Marcus Straoud’s first year, many people were like, I don’t know, is this guy going to be any good? Well, he turned out to be one of the best defensive tackles in all of football during his time frame. Again, we’ll get to the Dline and O line coming up next week once some shoulder pads go on. That starts early next week. We’ll have something to really sink our teeth into. There’s nothing better than training camp practices that have full pads and you have the one-on-one drills with offensive and the defensive linemen. That’s the stuff that you really look at and go, “Oh, yeah. You can really get a good good look at these guys.” in competition, man. It amps up. Oh, it’s Yeah, you you you put offensive and defensive linemen and if they do a drill and no pads, it’s kind of a dance. Okay. Because, you know, you’re Yeah. You’re you’re getting your steps and your hands placement, but there’s no none of that. You know, you got to have a little bit of that practice. You know, that’s what makes the football world go round. The uh sound effects department. That’s my best. That’s all I can do. No grunting though. No. Well, there’s grunting. I’ll give you a funny story. Please do not I’m not going to grunt, but I’m gonna give you a funny story. So, I remember my my second year in the league. Oh, yeah. Pete Carol, this been uh 890 90. And Pete Carol moved me to defensive end. Him and Greg Robinson was D Lions coach. Greg was our defense or Pete was the defensive coordinator and going against the New York Giants and I I think it was a preseason game. We always matched up against the Giants in a preseason game and it was like the first snap or something like that and I line up and Jumbo Elliott was the left tackle for the Giants that good player, right? Absolutely. And he’s growling at me and I went, “Come on, man. Really? Are you going to growl at me?” And the best part was growl like a dog growl. Yeah. Yeah. And I’m going, “What is this? What the world?” Right? And so I’m kind of chuckling because I’m like, “This is the first time I’ve ever actually had an offensive lineman growl at me.” And I was laughing because I had what was called a Niner stunt. So I’m in a five technique outside shade on his shoulder. And we had a g a stunt line where the nose tackle went up the field in the A gapped as fast as he can. One step for me at the tackle and then loop underneath of the nose tackle. So, I was laughing because he’s growling at me, which is awesome because he thinks he’s going to come out and punch me in the mouth. But, I’m going to take one step and I’m gone. And sure enough, he comes at me. I one step knock his hands down, go up, get a hit on the quarterback, incomplete pass. And I was like, “Dude, stop growling.” Did you growl back? No. later. We just played it against No, I did walk by him later in the uh in that game and I just went see you did but not but not like while we were lining it up once it was over. That’s good stuff. By the way, when does uh Jaguars All Access TV start? It’s going to be on Thursday. Great question. I’d have to look in my email to be honest. Yeah, I’m I’m sure. But uh all these shows start. You got to give me the pro. You got to give me a little heads up on that question. I mean, I was just curious sometime soon. People were excited about the show always. Yeah, that’s a great question. Where’s Dave Danis when you Dave? Where you at? Who knows? Yeah, there ain’t no town. Ask me that question. Next Thursday. Next week, I’ll do that and I’ll give you an answer. Yeah, I just knew that we were starting today. This is Yeah. And then we’ll start phasing in some other shows in the afternoon in the coming weeks. Like uh the Monday show will be a couple weeks out. And Jaguars AM was on today, right? They were. I’ve got an answer for you by the way. Jaguars All Access. You do? You got it in your ear. Sources say Sources say it’s August 28th. Okay. All right. What is the sources telling you now? No, that’s it. Oh, that’s August 28th. That’s all I got. So, put that on your calendar. The reason I wasn’t in the in in my mind yet because I knew that it was starting later, you know, because I knew we typically started before the regular season. Sometimes we would have a special going into that by weekend. That’s going into Labor Day weekend, right? Yeah. Which is uh like the last weekend until with the grind, you know, the season begins of the season of excitement. Yeah. And then they’ll go before the open of against Carolina at 1:00 on the 6th. Yeah. Right. It’ll be nice and cool that day. Oh yeah. Yeah. It’ll be, you know, high 75, birds chirping, wind blowing, a gentle breeze out of the east at 10. Perfect day. So, and then of course it goes straight in through London and then the by-week’s right after London this year. So, that’s a good little stretch of football there. Yeah. A little different schedule this year. Um, Monday night game in there. Yeah, I’m excited about that. That’s the Chiefs game. That’s a that’s a that’s going to be a big game. Huge. When I say big game, they’re all big games, but I mean a big game from a oh, just the buildup, the from a demand standpoint. I mean, look, you’re talking about the Kansas City Chiefs. By the way, did you watch the uh quarterback series on Netflix yet? No, I haven’t either. Good. Oh, you haven’t? Well, I watched the first one. You haven’t watched it? I’ve watched the first one and and I want to watch the second one because they did quarterbacks and they did receivers. Correct. And now it’s quarterbacks part two or whatever it is, you know. Okay. I think that’ll be a a pretty cool thing uh once I get into it. I like that kind of stuff, man. You’re all in. I like that kind of stuff. You know, between quarterback on Netflix and uh and the Hunt on YouTube, right? The Jaguars show, The Hunt. Sure. Uh just watched the last episode. What’ you think of the uh the Jaguar game? What do they call it? The Iron Jaguar. The Iron Jaguar game. It’s awesome. I I think it’s a great concept. And Foyer’s team, by the way, Foyer Belikan, linebacker, ended up winning. Smart guy, okay? Evaluated all the events. Okay, folks. And if you want to understand what I’m talking about, go to YouTube, okay? And subscribe to the Jaguars YouTube channel and watch the hunt. Don’t start with this series, okay? Go back to the beginning and watch the first one. And then you could eventually advance to the third one, which is what we’re talking about. and the Iron Jaguar games where they had a draft and and Foyer, smart guy, man. Okay. Uh, Ivy League school, Ivy League educated, I’ve heard, looked at the actual contest, evaluated what the skill set needed was going to be, picked the right guys, and ended up winning. And they got to forego the conditioning test coming into camp. And he told everybody about it, too. I think I would too. I would too, guys. That guy right there now, I’m telling you, he’s he’s a smart guy. Smart guy. Hey, coming up uh about a minute and a half, the Liam Cohen show makes its debut, but uh not Liam Cohen. He’ll be with us at the start of the regular season. It will be James Gladstone, Tony Belli in studio with us. What do you want to hear from these guys? They just walked in. I know they’re coming in. We’re on the What do you want to hear from these two coming up? No, you’re not on the air yet, Tony. We’ll turn them on the air. I mean, turn them on. I have no control over these mics, Tony. This is like the good old days. This is what I had to deal with. James, tell years Joe to turn it on. I don’t think he did. Yeah, I don’t know. Joe’s not going to turn you on just to spite. Yeah, probably not. So, uh, these guys are in studio with us clearly. And he is on. Hey, Tony. Hey, what’s up, guys? What’s up, James? You on, too? I think you are. Test test. Yeah, you’re on as well. Uh, we’ve got less than a minute, then we got to take a break. We’ll come back with the Liam Cohen show. We appreciate you guys coming in today. Looking forward to the conversation. You’re on like the first time you ever been on time. What are you talking just talking about it walking in? He’s like, I’m always on time. Shy. I was on time right as we started the show about 10 seconds before I’d show up. There’s something wrong with you. Let’s write this down. This is a first. This is early for him. The first time he’s ever Tom Cough on the show. I love that it carried over from the home. And it’s the same exact conversation. We’re back in a moment. The Liam Cohen show without the head coach Tony Belli, James Gladstone with us after this. This has been Jaguars happy hour. [Music] Welcome to the Liam Cohen Show presented by Fresh from Florida. JP Shadrick and Jeff Loggerman keep you informed and upto-date with the head coach of your Jacksonville Jaguars. The Liam Cohen Show starts right now. Welcome in the Liam Cohen show presented by Fresh from Florida from the Hyundai studios, the Miller Electric Center. We’re on the Jaguars Radio Network presented by the University of Florida, number one university in the US News and World Reports number one state for education. JP Shadric, Jeff Blogman. We’ll have Liam Cohen, the Jags head coach, with us starting in the regular season. I think these guys will do tonight. Tony Belli, James Gladstone, joining us in studio to get things going at the start of training camp. Tony Belli for those joining us on the network was a minute early. It is a new land speed record. All our fans are going to be like, “Hey, didn’t show up right when the show started.” Amazing. Welcome in, guys. James, glad to have you in here as well, man. It’s awesome. What’s up? To be on the on the mic. I know this. We got two rules in this franchise. The first one is be on time. Tony is abiding by that rule and is committed to the process. I need you to hold him to that. Well, no, but you’ll love this first meeting departments. It was like we have three we the before this was before Leah put in the whole football rules and stuff. We talked about how we’re going to operate as a uh operation staff. You know, we had three rules. Be on time. Respect everyone in the building. And work your ass off. That’s it. If you do those three things, you are gonna be good. I know where you got those three things from. Well, actually, you know where I got them from? The be on time’s like Tom obviously. Yeah. But that was be early. Be early. Yeah. So, but we actually one of the things and um I believe in it. Liam highlights it and James Liam and I talk about it being on time. We will not start a meeting early either. So, if like the meeting starts at 9, it starts at 9:00. That doesn’t mean like you’re not 8:55. If you get there five minutes early, we’re not going to start five minutes early, which was TC time, which is that’s his mode of operation. That’s great. But 9:00, if we have a meeting, it starts at 9:00. So, I got fined one time. I got fined. I was 3 minutes early and I was late. I crossed the concentration line 2 minutes before the practice was to begin and I got fined. the concentration line. Where was the concentration line? Well, this was back in Steven’s Point, you know, so it was like, you know, going it was a little bit murky. A game. It was more of a blurred line. No, no, no, no, no, no. He had a line. That’s right. Yeah. You had like baseball, you’ve got the guy with the chalk machine. They had a line that was run across this gate that was there. Remember when the practice field used to be where Dies is now in lot D? Yeah, that’s where it was for the our whole time you and I played here. There was a chainlink fence around the whole field with early there wasn’t even any coverings. They finally covered it so people couldn’t uh spy on us, but there was one gate you could go through and there was literally a big wide yellow line. Yep. And that was the concentration. Step over and lock. You’re locked in. And if you’re not across that line in Tom’s world five minutes before practice starts, you’re late. You’re late. Fin. Yep. The money’s coming. Here we go. He made it rain. No doubt. But you know where I got those with influence that kind of how I think about it in a big way is John Robinson. Yeah. Because I remember when he came to SC and Larry Smith was the coach before great had a great was a great college coach. He was more in the Tom Coughlin school of thought. Lots of rules very like a lot. And I remember coach Robinson came in and you operated just fine tonight. Just operated with Tom here. No problems. when John Robinson came to SC and we had our first meeting, team meeting. I’ll never forget three rules and they were similar to that. Be on time. Um, respect everyone in the building. He was big on respecting because he did not like if you respect if you disrespected people underneath you. He had a real issue with that. Yeah. Rule rule number two has been framed many different ways. It has. And some of them not so clean language wise. That’s a good point. And then the last rule was play your play your tail, play your and and so and I remember being a player in that situation for me it was a lot of freedom from the stance of not lack of rules as and James has articulated this best I never articulated this way but allowed me to be who I was and just hey it’s easy show up on time respect the building respect everybody you respect people by being on time because you value their time, you know, treat everyone as a human, as we should, with respect and love and kindness. And then finally, just do your job to the best of your ability. And amazingly, if you do those three things, every other rule you can think of pretty much gets covered. It falls in line. Now, except for no white socks. That I couldn’t find a place for that one, but uh and so that’s kind of how we operate. And it’s interesting Liam when he beca our head coach we sat down the first time and he and I we talked about the three of us like what are the team like what’s the culture how we’re going to do things and what are the rules and Liam’s like I got two rules. Yeah. Be on time protect the team. Yeah. The one the one thing I think that um by having those ground rules kind of talked about and established for I know for the locker room because you know I came from an environments that didn’t necessarily have rules spelled out. when I came here with Coughlin and he had those rules and his rules were way long. But but the gist of it was those three things. By the way, if you if you if you summarized all of his rules outside of some of the travel things like he had his nuances of what he wanted you to wear and stuff, yeah, James, you would have gotten fined. No, James hates white socks, too. Yeah, but he’s got white sneakers on. That was not allowed. He didn’t like those. Okay. Trust me, I know the rule book because I got fined for that, too. I’m halfway there. you’re halfway there. But but the thing that I was going to get at is that when you have those those rules in place as a player, it gives you an environment that you can thrive in. You don’t feel like that you have to end up cleaning up the locker room or establishing what the rules should be as a leader. I mean, it’s already there and it allows you to do more than just pick up the pieces of trash, so to speak, you know. Yeah. Uh Jeff Logan, JP Shadrick, Tony Belli, James Gladstone. This is the Liam Cohen show. Liam Cohen will be with us at the start of the regular season. Uh yeah, you’re stuck with us during training camp. James Lstone’s here, too. I don’t think he’s gotten two words in yet. I’m going to ask the GM a question. Is that okay? He’s happy with that. No, probably. So, so here’s the question. Um the the team has been assembled. The team is on the field being coached. Training camp is here. Logs, you know where I’m going. I do go there. James, what do you do now? No, that’s a great question. You know, Tony and I spend a lot of time together and I’ve done a ton of talking over the course of the spring, uh, the early portion of the summer. And, you know, I’m looking forward to seeing all this come to life and really round out the remaining items on the to-do list, so to speak, before the the season gets here, which right now, obviously, with the kickoff of camp, we’re focusing a lot of our attention on the return to play and uh, what that all looks like. While at the same time, we’ve got our scouting staff back in the facility full-time right now for a twoe window here. We’re working through what we’ve labeled as our scouting summit and we’re uh walking through our modes of operation, the things that we’re going to be placing an emphasis on as we head into this next cycle. And uh really getting a chance to be under the same roof with them uh is a good thing for us as we we all get to know one another on a deeper level and uh have a clear understanding for for what it is we’re looking for as we start to hunt up the next iteration of players that will come in uh through all the modes of uh of acquisition that will be in front of us. And uh really just looking forward in the now to see this group really as as Liam has mentioned it offer their edge and create it together and really what the identity of this team is going to look like here throughout 2025. I I got I got two questions for you and uh I’ll stick with the first question first. I don’t want to overload your brain there because I if you’re like me, you got to focus on one thing at a time. I don’t think he’s like you. No, I think he operates at a little higher level just I’m glad I’ve got you two fooled. We got hit in the head a lot. It’s one thing at a time. Um, how do you balance as a general manager the here and now with this football team and also the future? Because your job is not just about, okay, I’m I’m you’re not done with this roster yet. I mean, there’s still opportunities to improve this roster here and now, but then also you’re looking down the road. So, as a as a general manager, how do you balance that as far as handling the now, but also handling the future, right? I see them as one and the same in a lot of ways, right? Both can be true. you’re you’re focusing on both and uh you know one has impact on the other and uh I think it’s you can try and compartmentalize as best as possible but at the same time you got to know that uh you know rooting yourself in the current moment is probably uh what’s going to lend itself to to the most production and knowing that that’ll definitely have layered impact on on what lies in front but balancing the logic the line of thinking uh is certainly going to remain at the forefront and uh I think it it is fun vacascillating between uh sort of our conversations in the meeting rooms throughout the course of a day and then jumping out to the field and seeing what’s taking place and then engaging in some strategy around what comes next. Uh but knowing that the the current moment is the the one you got to root yourself in. All right, part two. Um so that my brain can handle all this. Okay. Uh every year every team is in a different cap situation. Mhm. How is the health of the cap of this football team this year? Because at some point you may need to tweak or add with injuries or with just supplementing the roster. Uh and also how is the cap situation of this this team moving forward because you know a lot of times that’s not the conversation of this football team because where it’s been the most of the conversation is about wins and losses. Most of the time the teams that win the conversation is about salary cap. But is the salary cap, how is it now and how’s it look in the future? Yeah, we currently have about 18 million in cap space and you got to account for and project. There’s al also an idea you roll over salary cap. So what you don’t use ends up in the next cycle. So that’s not a bad thing if you have a little extra. We’re kind of in the middle of the the league on the current space that we have at our disposal, which gives us flexibility. It allows us if we uh feel like we got to we got to go after somebody, we can we can entertain that. we’re not sort of limited by that at this current moment. Um, and obviously that has to be entertained with a lot of forward thought, right? Knowing that you can roll over and injuries may show themselves that force your force your hand a little bit. Uh, opportunities pop up that you may or may not have anticipated. And, uh, we certainly want to give ourselves the flexibility to to think about those things as they progress. And you also got to take into consideration that our practice squads on the horizon that’ll take a chunk out of the the current cap space and and things of that nature. So, uh, it’s definitely balancing a lot, but in a healthy spot, uh, heading into the season for sure. I think I think as you look forward, Jeeoff, I think the unknown is because you you’re going to have some rollover, at least where we sit today, not knowing what the future looks like. But the other thing you don’t we don’t know specifically what’s the cap going to be next year? What’s the increase? Like I think the cap standoint from the league standpoint, like the cap increased a little bit more than people expected this year. So, a lot of things go into that with revenue and everything else. Seems like that happens every year. It usually does. It goes up a little more than expected then which means the business is going down. You’re right. Doesn’t go down. Let’s hope not. No. That would not be good for anybody. How long do we have you guys by the way? Uh 30 30 minutes. 30 minutes from now. So we got 30 minutes. So that’s cool. Write it down. I wish we weren’t on time. We’re going to take a timeout. We’ll come back with more. Tony Velli, James Gladstone with us in studio for the opening Liam Cohen show of the season on the Jaguars Radio Network. We’re at the Hyundai studios, the Miller Electric Center. Tony Belli and James Gladstone live in studio with us. We’ll have the head coach starting in week one of the regular season on this program each and every Thursday on the Jaguars Radio Network. Let’s uh let’s get into some personnel first couple days. Uh James, what stood out to you on the field from the balcony over here? You know what? It’s been fun to see it. The competition across all three phases really shine and been some great moments from from each side of the ball and a lot of things that are are easy to identify and coach up and and lean into in terms of getting better each day. Um, but to see uh the level of competition where it’s at, players doing what’s being asked of them and committing to it, uh, really showing a sign of buyin, uh, has been really neat. Right? You look at our offense, there is a there’s a high level of complexity attached to it. And it it requires it’s got a high level of mental demands pre- snap to make post snap easier. Um, and obviously preparation is necessary for that to look clean. And the operation being as clean as it has been on the offensive side of the ball through two practices is really something to to give praise to. And you got to point to players who didn’t take time off uh from their mental preparation in the leadup to these couple of days, right? uh for Trevor to have walked in and have a 100 question quiz sprung upon him just like every other QB and walk away as the the winner of that output. It wasn’t just uh right or wrong answers. It was the speed at which you were answering and scored according to Did they Did they know they were going to have this test? They had no idea. They were going through a normal meeting and then bam, right before they left. Here you guys go. What do you get? 85. Is that right? Yeah. And again, again, it’s not like 85 out of 100, so to speak, as much as it is a a scoring system that takes into account the speed at which you’re answering, that type of stuff. Um, which obviously is. So, so what would it be? What would be is great. I mean, if 85 is actually an A thing on that, the bigger thing on that is this in that room. You had obviously Trevor, Nick Mullins, John Wolford and our rookie Hennean. Wolford and Mullins both have been in this system and operated this system for years. So very familiar with the language, how they call it can plays. Trevor’s first exposure to this was this spring. I would have expected and this is not a knock against Trevor. It’s a complex system as James said that either Nick Mullins or Walford would have been the highest score based on just based on time experience and everything else to me where Trevor gets an A in my book because these are Wolford and Mullins are both very smart, very intellectual, understanding, like almost coaches on the field in some sense. for Trevor to have the highest score. Like to me, I was like, “Wow, what a pleasant surprise.” This is a guy who has dedicated himself since the day he got here as he’s rehabbing his shoulder with our coaches to be diligent of understanding the system, the calls, the checks, the formations. It’s multiple formations. And you don’t do that by just the time that you’re required or you’re asked to spend here with the coaches. you have to do that on your own and for him to do that shows what kind of pro he is and the fact that he’s um achieved that mentally is a real positive sign. I I I thought that physically he looks the best he’s ever looked. Do you guys look agree? I mean I thought he’s looks in great shape than he has been I think in his career. I I don’t know what he weighed in. Yeah, I don’t know what he’s weighed in in the past but I think he came in in great shape and and like all our guys did. I think they had a great offseason. I give a ton of credit to Eric Ciano, our strength uh head strength coach, and his staff and the buyin from our players. Uh I think all of us were very pleased with the offseason. And then a number of our players, some went to other places to work out, go home, which is very normal. A lot of guys, more than normal, stayed in Jacksonville on their own because it’s all voluntary. can’t be coaches involved during that dead period to work out at the facility and to really train and work out together. Trevor taking the receivers once again to the Bahamas to do that work. The dedication from the players to be as prepared as they possibly can before camp was uh was very encouraging. All right. So, I was watching the hunt, okay, on YouTube. You guys might have heard of it. I don’t know. Okay. And uh you guys have been stars on that uh you know, episode one, two, and then three. in episode three was the Iron Jaguar and I saw Trevor lifting weights. Okay. And I was sitting there thinking back to the days, you know, of old and I was going, I wonder if Trevor was doing power cleans. It’s a different dynamic nowadays. Yeah. It’s a little bit different weightlifting. It’s not the old days yet where Jerry Paul Mary’s having Mark Brunell do power cleans with the rest of us in the weight room. The reason I bring that up is that that really happened. It did happen. Our starting quarterback was power cleans. And by the way, he had one of the highest power queens guys in the weight room, man. And we Yeah, he hurt his back. He did hurt his back. That was the last day. What are we doing? In 19 I think that was 96. It was the last day of his career he did power cleans. He was forbidden to do power cleans from that moment on. Yeah. Trust me, I asked Tony a lot of questions about what was it like back in your day and oh the stories. Starting quarterback power clean. It’s a little bit different. What are we doing? It’s a different deal. Tony Melli, James Gladstone with us. This is the Liam Cohen show, first of the season on the Jaguars radio network. A lot of eyeballs on Travis Hunter, certainly the fans in the stands are excited every time he touches the ball on offense, but the first couple days he’s also had very light defensive walkthrough work during special teams times. And they’ve said every moment of practice is scripted out for him. So far so good. But what’s the next step now for Travis Hunter? You know what? Got to give a ton of credit. Liam put a ton of time and attention into what that progression is going to look like for Travis over the course of the training camp and and obviously building up for the regular season, but it’s cool coming off of our plan in OTAA is seeing him bounce back uh from offense to defense um every other practice and things like that more heavily loaded on offense. Obviously knowing that that’s such a critical phase of the calendar year where it is a mental load and with the complexity on of our offensive system wanting to place an emphasis there. Um and then also learning through that uh of where there can be uh issues or hurdles to overcome when as an example you have a a 4-day weekend right in front of you and you go offense on Thursday, you go Friday off, Saturday off, Sunday off, defense is the next one up for them. And now you have such a significant gap between time on task. It can be challenging to recalibrate the mind being detached from it like that. Um so using that as a nice example and building out our training camp approach. I know uh Liam’s got a a really wellwritten out plan. And obviously we’ll remain agile as things uh show themselves or or feel like we need to put more emphasis in a certain area, but uh with Travis’s commitment, the coach’s commitment uh to making sure that this is all an option to bring to life here in the early going is a really cool uh thing to see play in real time. I’m I’m excited to watch kind of that Travis on offense, but not just because of him. You’ve got BTJ who is incredibly fast. Uh you’ve got Dammy Brown who can fly. So you got three guys that can fly and Parker Washington is a powerful quick you know after the catch kind of thing. Got a lot of weapons there on offense and but the speed I think of those three guys. I’m holding up four fingers. Wait a minute. Of those three guys goes back to we were talking about earlier. Exactly. The speed of those three guys. I can’t wait to watch those guys play football game. Yeah I think you can certainly point to that as some version of a superpower. for the offense as a whole. I think it shows up in uh a number of different position groups and that includes our offensive line. There’s uh a group of guys up there that are very mobile and I I think you can expect to see that, you know, be a part of our game as we move into this regular season and obviously, you know, know that sort of what we’re leaning into most can evolve. Uh it may not be the exact same as what we’re seeing now four weeks from now, may not be the exact same week one as it is week five. Uh but look forward to seeing the identity of the group come to life and them them be a part of that here in the early down and do their part. Uh Tony, are you ready for pads yet? Well, I was Yeah, it was funny when Jeff asked or maybe it was you JPS James the questions like who stood out and I said well in this non-foot activities that we’re doing right now on the field because we haven’t played football yet. No. That in all in all I mean I’ve joked about this every year I was on this show. Absolutely. In all seriousness, now sitting where I sit, there’s only so much evaluation you can do of who you are as a team through what we’ve done so far. It’s a necessary, it’s critical. James talked about the mental side of it. Critical of the conditioning, the strength, become a becoming a team, establishing a culture, how you’re going to operate. All those things are so important. You cannot do that without the phases we’ve gone through. This acclamation period’s important. get everyone back in the building, you know. Well, you’ve made a 180. No, but I’m saying it’s critical. The guy that used to complain about the way things are and now you’re saying it’s great. No, no, I’m not saying it’s great. I said it’s critical, but you don’t know who you are as a football team until you start playing football. Like we talked about our offensive line. I think what we’ve done in the offseason, the work the guys have done, I think we have very good depth, but I can’t sit here right now and tell you who we are as an offensive line. and how are they going to work together? You look at the other side of the line of scrimmage, Trayvon, Josh, man, they had great offseasons. Their bodies look different. They are hungry to get to another level in their careers, in their games. Mason Smith had did everything we asked. Dedicated, works his tail off. Devon Hamilton looks like what he did. What’s he weighing right now? Uh, he he weighs what he we want him to weigh. He’s weighing right where we want him to weigh. But Jeff, you and I have watched him for a long time. Before the back injury, he was ascending to being one of the better war techniques. Gets hurt. Bad injury impacted them in a major way. You can see him in his body getting back to what we saw before, excited for what he can do. and you just go down the list, but I can’t tell you what any of them are until you put the pads on and you see that competitive uh in a competitive environment where you’re being physical because I think one of the things Liam has harped on, we all believe is we have to be a more physical team. We have to be able to run the ball and we have to control the line of scrimmage and then on the other side we got to stop the run, give ourselves a chance to rush the passer and get in um positive downs and distance for our defense that can attack, take the ball away, create turnovers. So we are such an early stage, it’s really hard to make a full evaluation of where we’re at until you get and start playing football. The other element to just lend itself into an understanding of how we’ll scout, our style of scouting, it’s rooted in authentic football exposures. Right? The idea of watching game film, turning on the tape, pressing play, quarter 1 to quarter 4, play after play, letting it speak to you. the nonoff authentic football exposures, the one-on-one settings where it’s offensive line, defensive line, and it’s not true to form. It’s not a real football exposure, or the onfield workouts where there is no enemy across from you. The combine, those are not authentic football exposures. We will root ourselves in the authenticity of football as a part of our evaluation process. And this just points back to what Tonyy’s saying. We’ve seen very good things as a part of the phases that we’ve gone through to date. We will not know who we are until we put the pads on upcoming. One more time out. We’ll come back. Final thoughts with Tony Belli and James Gladstone. It’s the Liam Cohen show on Jaguars Radio. [Music] Fidians, do you know how close you are to freshness? It’s not a plane or a ship ride away. Final moments with Tony Belli and James Gladstone on the Liam Cohen show presented by Fresh from Florida. JP Shadrick with Jeff Logan and uh yeah, tell Liam we’re waiting on him. You know, the start start of the regular season. Glad to have you guys here though. Well, right now he is a little busy. There’s a lot going on. They’re walking through right now doing walkthroughs. So, you’re stuck. You’re stuck with us. Do you miss radio, Tony? Uh, not one bit, JP. Oh, you do, too. I miss hanging out with you guys, though. Oh, that’s great. So, uh, so a little different schedule. Um, because, you know, practice in the morning and then walk through in the afternoon. Uh, I like it as a player. I would like that just I mean, you know, take advantage of any cool part of the day you can get, you know, and and not only that, it’s I mean, it’s still been hot. It was hot this morning, but I think you get away from those afternoon thunderh showers where you’re forced inside. We do not want to practice inside if we don’t have to, obviously. Um, and I think just the overall schedule of how it’s laid out. I think it’s beneficial for um, obviously the weather I just talked about, but also for our coaches and how they prepare for the day, our players, the kind of the rhythm they go into. So, so far so good. Um, obviously we’re early in the down and uh but I think everyone right now is operating pretty well in the schedule. James, you excited for pads next week? Oh, can’t wait. Hear those babies pop. Authentic football exposures on the horizon. Yeah, we’re juiced up for that to uh to occur and I think at that point we’ll we’ll start to see some things that we haven’t yet and start to pivot based off of them. I think there’s always a level of excitement, you know, when the pads go on. I mean, because you know, there’s a lot of unknowns and there’s some guys that you watch when they’re not in pads and you go, “Yeah, yeah.” But when they get pads on, they’re different. I mean, it’s some guys just distinguishing themselves when they the pads go on. Are there a couple guys that you each, you know, and this is for each of you to answer on your own? Are there a couple guys that that you want got your eyes on when the pads go on that you’re like, I can’t wait to see him? Yeah, I think that’s for me it’s probably fair to say that that’s across the board. Uh there’s never an instance where uh I’m evaluating somebody that that’s not the case. Uh everything else is is just sort of the the baseline elements and until you’re in the pads, it’s hard for me to really say with any certainty what you’re actually going to be. But, you know, across the board when when you start to look at the trenches, that’s probably at least where the internal sentiment would be as wow, that was a great rep here in OTAAS. But I have no idea if that would have been the case had the pads been on. So, from tight end to to interior O, it’s certainly top of mind. And the fact that we’re going to ask our receivers to do a little bit more uh in that phase of the game than the they’re probably used to, right? knowing that this system asks that all 11 participate in the run game offensively. Uh it’ll be it’ll be exciting to see those guys get engaged in that. Yeah, I got 14 individual guys. I’m really looking forward to watching here. You just read the offensive line. No, but I’m with James. I mean, I think you go across the board. Obviously, I’m drawn to the offensive line. I was joking with James as we were doing some scouting work uh uh the last couple days looking at OTAAS and different things. I have to tell myself I have to tell myself to look at other positions because I found myself yesterday we were watching as a group and I missed the first two plays. Uh, all I watch is the five guys up front and then you naturally watch the defensive guys and after two plays I’m like, “Oh gosh, I got to watch see what the DBs are doing, the wide receivers are doing,” which has actually been a ton of fun for me. Um, super thankful to James as we work through the process and uh allowing me to dive into some of the uh cross uh check scouting, but also looking at the overall thing because I love the game of football and we’ve talked about that for years forever. And uh and it’s been a ton of fun for me to really dive into different positions and watching our backs and watching the back end. And you look at a guy like Kale Old Bransaw that we got out of two lane and again we’re not in pads but watching him operate and and or whether it’s him or Jordan Lewis positions I probably would watch as we watch film together Jeff obviously we’d watch every game and kind of evaluate what we saw but those are glances you kind of watch and always drawn back to the trenches and so really to dive into that I think that’s been a privilege for me and a ton of fun and super thankful for James and hold on talk about I get the luxury of sitting in a room with a Hall of Fame offensive lineman when we’re evaluating the oil. So, yeah, it’s I’m thankful that I get that off as well and also get to ride the tales of, hey, Tony’s been asked to go be a speaker at a an O mastermind setting that he hadn’t gone to in years, but offered I’m like, hey, would would you mind if I come with you? He messed up my He messed up my summer. He goes, “Hey, did you invite that online mastermind?” I go, “Yeah, I’m not going to go.” What is that? It’s a It’s a great event. uh started by Lane Johnson and a guy named Duke Merryweather who’s a really good football player like and a great dude just maybe the best tackle in football right now. Yeah. And I I love his thoughts on the current state of the union by the way. Just my personal You’re a union guy. I’ll let you we’ll talk about that another time. But um they’ve been doing it for I don’t know how many years. Probably seven I think it is now. This was the kind of like tight end you equivalent for. They bring in not only NFL but top college guys because Duke Merryweather is a guy that has a a facility that he trains both college players and NFL players. And who is Duke Merryweather? Uh I don’t know his background that well to be honest with you. I believe he started as a high school trainer and eventually a lot of those players uh began finding success collegiately and and professionally. Uh and so he’s built up a good clientele list and okay uh has a has a a pretty big following but obviously in conjunction with Lane who was one of his early clients uh have structured this this O masterminds event annually and I think it’s either seventh or eighth year and uh just like that of tight end you um sack summit it’s the equivalent. Yeah and it’s great. So you talked them into going. Well you weren’t going to go. Well, usually I don’t go because it’s it’s in July. I’m on vacation and I exactly right, JP. I enjoy the islands. Um, and this year I was happened to be in uh town and the schedule wasn’t working. James like I think you should go. Where was that? It’s in Dallas. Dallas. He goes, “I think you should go.” But he did. Then he quickly followed up. He goes, “And can I come with you?” So, yes, we’re working on It’s been a blast being in the bunker with Tony, and I’m sure we’re both uh thankful for different elements, but I’m I’m certain that I am uh I’m probably reaping more rewards than he is as a But get this. So, we end up we we’re scheduled to stay the night. The event gets over earlier than anticipated. So, we’re like, “Wait a minute, there’s one more flight back to Jacksonville.” So, we had flown out 7:00 a.m. We get a chance to get on uh like a 5:00 p.m. to get us back here at 7:00 p.m. And as a part of that, we’re on standby. Well, Tony gets crammed middle seat economy and it’s all everybody going from Dallas to Jacksonville. So, there’s plenty of people that know who’s sitting. Yeah. You think so? you’re in the gym and me walking past everybody to the back crammed in and I think James got a kick out of I’m sitting there. But I’ll tell you what, to get home 24 hours early, that’s pretty cool. When you know that you’re getting ready to go into camp and listen, next seven months is full full speed and can’t wait for it. It’s exciting, but you you you relish any moment you can have in that time off at home and with family. And James is like, “What do you think about going back?” I’m like, “We’ll be in coach.” And he’s like, “You okay with it?” I’m like, “Hell yeah, let’s go. I don’t care what pain I’m in for the next two and a half hours.” Two and a half hours of pain. I’ll be fine. Those poor people you had to sit. Oh, man. They suffered more than I did. Well, I got to say that uh incredibly refreshing listening to James Gladstone when he talked about the evaluation process of players and how uh you know the evaluation process has got to include the contact, the physicality, actual football, actual football, right? He was not saying that the combine is a throwaway tool, but he was saying that there are things that are incredibly important, and that is the football aspect of it of actually playing football, you know, and I’m not trying to point to anybody that has been here or anybody at any other organization, but if you want to find the best football players, okay, for your team, watch when they’ve played football and evaluate that part of it and not so much the 40 times the the four cone or broad jump or vertical jump or all these other things. Look, I think that’s all interesting. Okay? Cuz you have numbers attached to them and you can grade players and rate players and all this stuff. And it’s an easy way analytics wise to say, “Well, this guy, he’s faster than this guy and this guy.” Well, look, the the the hard part and the part that AI and analytics can’t evaluate is if a guy’s a good football player. I mean, the trained eye has to be able to evaluate that. And and that point of view to me is incredibly refreshing. And that one of the reasons why I’m I’m very excited about the the three guys that are in place right now. Tony’s a football guy. James is a football guy. Believes in watching and evaluating football. And obviously Liam Cohen is a football guy. And and the one thing that I love about Liam, the more that I watch him, only been around him a little bit, but watching him, I love the edge that he has. I think there’s I think all coaches need to have a little people have to have a little bit of an edge to be successful in this game and I’m excited about the three of those guys. I think this organization is in great hands. Let’s come back in a moment. We’ll get to some of those position battles. We promised some skill guys. Sorry to distract you. It’s a great comment. Yeah, we love hearing from you. It’s been a while. I know it’s been a while. It’s the Liam Cohen show on the Jaguars Radio Network. James Gladstone, Tony Bastelli joining us earlier in the program. Looking forward to the podcast version of that to go check that out again. Uh position battles as they were talking about logs. It’s kind of hard to look at the trenches right now, but in terms of skill guys, both sides of the ball, give me the most intriguing position battle on each side, offense and defense right now. I I I think the two position groups that we had talked about during happy hour to me are the most interesting. Running back I think is uh going to be highly competitive and I think there will be some changes on a week- toeek basis until they find a hot hand in some situations. The third down back position is going to be up for grabs just I just like I think the workhorse position is going to be open for competition. I don’t think there will be one guy that fulfills both roles. I think that will be divvied up between two guys and maybe even three guys at some point. The defensive backfield I think is also very interesting to me and it starts with a conversation about Travis Hunter. How much will he be available? What packages will he be a part of? Which packages will he not be a part of? And I think that leads into, okay, now that you’ve established that, now you kind of know where the battles for the rest of it are. But until you know the roles and define the the playtime amount and the packages for Travis Hunter, I think then you really don’t know where it’s going to be at. But I can I can tell you this, whether Travis Hunter is playing defense or not, there is an interesting battle going on with that whole back end. If there is one guy that maybe has a a lock, it’s Tyson Campbell, Jordan Lewis. Other than that, I think that there’s there’s open competition there at all the other positions in the background. And as Kanelli said today, you know, it might not be over. It could be a week to week. Let’s see who is the better matchup, right? Hey, maybe we don’t need Travis on defense this week cuz the matchup’s not great. Or we have a better matchup. somebody who matches up against their receivers better or you know that could change the whole dynamic you know it really can and and I think that’s going to be fun to watch and and you know a lot of times like when you you talk about your opinion on something like when it comes to a stock or or something like that you know you have a you know what is it they you’re bullish on something or you’re bearish or whatever yes okay I’m bullish on the back end the secondary for two reasons one I think they’ve added a lot of talent the two different ways that they could in free agency then also with the draft but then also because of Campanili or Campanelli whatever you want to say his last name is I think that he’s going to bring a standard of execution to this defense that is going to make last year’s defense look even worse than really what it was because the Green Bay Packers in the past couple years have been incredibly thorough an incredibly mistakefree and highly competitive and I expect him to instill that same thing here in Jacksonville. The Liam Cohen Show presented by Fresh from Florida continues right now. Final couple of moments here on the Liam Cohen show. JP Shadrick with Jeff Logaman. the upcoming schedule for the Jaguars. They’ll practice tomorrow morning at 8:45 or 8:40 or so officially. So, um that’ll be open to the public, of course. Jaguars.com/training. Players off Saturday, then they are back at it logs on Sunday in spider pads. The shoulder pads come on Monday and Tuesday before an off day Wednesday. Yeah. I mean, I’m going to be here tomorrow with you and then we’ll obviously be announced in practice, but uh the excitement to me really starts on Monday when the pads get real. And and the one thing I will say I appreciate in Liam Con’s interview today, he was asked the question about pads and all of that. And along the lines of what James Gladstone said about the evaluation process, pads is the most important thing and contact and playing football. Liam Con said that he’s going to take advantage of every opportunity that he can with the pads to get his team ready to play football. And and I love hearing that because just like you said and they said that, you know, to evaluate football, you got to do the football things. Our thanks to James Gladstone, Tony Baselli, Joe Fortunado, Brent Reaver, David Cho, our entire crew for Jeff Logan. I’m JP Shadrick. Thank you for listening to the Liam Cohen show on the Jaguars Radio Network. [Music]

Love JP
Duuuuval!!
Loving this level of access. Going from turning off games last year to not being able to turn away from these programs has been a welcomed surprise. Yall have dictated a clear and transparent vision for the franchise and followed it up with observable authenticity. Great job on rekindling this fanbase, can’t wait to see what the next decade of Jags football has to offer
We heard that what the hell 😂😂😂😂
JP Shadrick into the pride of the Jaguars when???????
85 is a B- borderline C+ Broski's a 93 is a B+ I hope the decision making for tlaw is MVP like this year!!!
AI actually would be very good at evaluating good football players if you spent the time compiling the data
New logo is very nice!
FYI: 85 is a solid B, a B+ would be a 87 to 89.
Good Show 👍
Football isn’t Rocket Science… it’s Jaguar Science. 🐆Speed. Chaos. Precision in the Field of Mirrors. Rocket Science is about launch. Jaguar Science is about the strike. Tempo never sleeps. Motion breaks codes. Defenses chase ghosts. This isn’t about reaching the stars—it’s about hunting under them. Welcome to 2025. Welcome to Our Hunt in 2025!
Looks like no BS this year!! Love the transparency of the franchise. There is definitely a different vibe from management all the way down to the media!!! Let's go DUUUUUUUVAL FOREVER!!!!
