Report says Kansas City Royals are reluctant to move their top starter, complicating deadline plans

  1. I feel like they’re hesitant to trade him because they dont have a confident timetable on when Ragens will be back.

  2. This is hard to judge if they should trade him without knowing what the offers are and the options that the team has.

They shouldn’t take the return yesterday for Josh Naylor. Just give Lugo a qualifying offer this offseason. Worst case is you get a much better prospect than Arizona got in the draft. Or you slightly overpay him for 2026, during which you probably still have an equivalent return available in a trade.

On the other hand, if someone is offering a better prospect than you would get via the QO draft pick comp, you have to seriously consider it.

  3. Can we just wait to see how this week plays out before overreacting to an article?

  4. I’m fine with it. If you don’t think you get a good deal it’s fine. You can qualifying offer him and get something when he leaves anyway. We aren’t so bad that it feels like we *have* to trade him anyway

  5. Total leverage statement the team is putting out through their MLB.com beat reporter. Nothing worth getting upset over and going “grrrr this front office wants to suck waaah”
