just about ready to go. And today’s starting pitcher, Steven Matz. What do you have on him, Singy? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. So, digging in now for San Diego, Fernando Tatiz Jr. And that’s outside. And away we go this afternoon. First pitch 115. Tatis waits and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Fernando Tatiz Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. That one just misses. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with towards first. Contrarus, he’ll do it himself. One up, one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one. Partner Luis Arise stands in Chris. Baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Slashes this one and it could be trouble. makes the turn and heads for second. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. I’ll tell you when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that. I mean, sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter more than a bolt the other way. One out, runner at second, and now it’s Manny Machado. And the first pitch misses for ball one. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end and Manny gets a piece. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. That one off the mark. Ball three. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. So, the go-ahehead run at scoring position. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Gavin Sheets delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Yeah. And I figured you would get Cat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Go, Steve. Laser could be trouble. Rounds third headed for the plate. He will score and they take the lead. Well done. Drives in the run. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Ground ball right side and foul ball. And that one a little below the knees. One and one. They’ve got him working a little harder in this first frame than he anticipated. Ruer at second. Two down. finish him. Now this is in the air down the line and that will drop foul. The pitch swing and a miss and that is that. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Padres’s one and the Cardinals nothing back here at Bush Stadium and our starting pitcher here today, Dylan Cece. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Let’s go. That one fouled off. And there’s the strike on the outside corner. It’s two and two. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty. Swinging a foul out of play and takes low for ball one. Good eye right there. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Still two and two after the foul ball. One down, base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. It looks pretty tough to start this one. Punching out the first two hitters of this ball game. And somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play, and get something going. Two down, base is empty. And now Alec Burlson on the corner for a strike. 0 and one. Two outs. And that’s a strike. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. Outside low. One and two to count and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. Got him. Strikes out the side to begin the game. What a start. Red Birds down quietly. They trail here. One- nothing. Back here in St. Louis. Top of the second. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Mats back to work. Smoked on the ground to second. Throws to first in time. One up, one down. Batting seventh, first baseman Jake Croninworth. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Croninworth, a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. Croninworth throws right, bats left, hitting seventh in today’s lineup and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2015. Hard ground ball base knock and the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Batting eight, second base. Now batting Tyler Wade. That one catches the zone and it’s 0 and one. They had a foul ball. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Contrarus over to second. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Padres’s one and the Cardinals nothing. ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now Wilson Contrus. Wilson Contin. And that clips the inside corner, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Smashed that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. On the ground to third. Oh, great stop. Throws from his knees. Oh, that one right there had the looks of one of those plays of the week. Great diving stop, but he just couldn’t set up to make a good throw. maybe got a little too excited. He was probably feeling it as well. But either way, that’s a tough play and a tough error. First and second, no outs. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. First and second. No outs. Bottom half of inning number two at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one. Well, with Simmons, it’s not always your standard strike zone. Boog. It kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others. But I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent. So, you got to stay ready. Swung on. Belted. And it one hops the wall. One runs in. The second run scores. It’s 2-1. Picks himself up a couple of ribbies. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Right through there for a strike. Win leads off second with nobody out. swings through that one for strike two. Very well executed change up right there. If he can command the fast ball consistently, that’s going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing around. Got him. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Yeah, that’s a tough pitch to stay on. You don’t want to get beat inside. And as you see that pitch continue to run away from you. By the time it’s in the catcher’s mid, you think it’s a ball off the plate away. So up next, Yohel Po. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Ball one there. good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Hey, you got this. The one-1 is fouled off. Runner at second here. One gone. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Man at second. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next pitch misses way outside. goes down looking. Digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Victor Scott. First offering misses badly for ball one. And that one sliced foul. Man on second, two down on the ground right side. He takes it on his own. They limit the damage here, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double and this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show onto the third inning. And here is Elas Diaz. Diaz. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. And that one hit to first. And that’s just foul. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. Ripped to short gets it to first. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Grounded out his first time. They’ll sing. This is a guy that grew up in big league club houses and it’s something that you see throughout the game, sons whose fathers also played the majors. Yeah. And beyond that, all the other men in those clubous that sort of take you under their wing as a son or a nephew and show you some of the tricks of the trade. It’s just invaluable that type of experience. One down, base is empty. There’s a strike. bows it back with two strikes into center and a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Good two- strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Got a change up and a pretty good one too. Outside corner, but he just got extended and put the barrel on it. Show has a lot of plate coverage on that swing right there. And now they’ve got some speed on first, so we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Arise in now takes ball one off the plate. right down the shoot and a count one and one. Next offering is fouled back and a foul ball. stays alive. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Fights it off. He’ll see another. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Missed with a change up. Full count three and two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. got him looking. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Here’s Manny Machado now. He’s 0 for one. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Tatis off of first with two away. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Breaking ball misses down and away. Hard hit right side in plenty of time to first. Bachado out on the play and that’ll do it. One left for San Diego and our score remains 2-1. And we’re back as we go to the last of the third. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Brendan Donovan. hit hard on the ground to short. Fires across the diamond. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Now batting designated hitter Ivon. And now the DH Ivon Herrera and first offering is fouled off. Chris, when you take in a stadium, I think one of the things that I always contemplate is where are you? And in St. Louis Bush Stadium, you know exactly where you are with the arch in the background. They mow it into the lawn. The Gateway Arch basically goes from line to line and out towards center field and then the retired numbers, the championship banners. I mean, it really shows off the history of this proud franchise. Yeah, Vogue. And this city is always just covered in red, especially during the baseball season, but they’ve added that ballpark village out there in left center field. Very accessible to come into this city, stay downtown, get to the ballpark, and take in a game in a great setting. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Tatis makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting leftielder. Two outs. Space is empty. Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. on the ground of first, but it kicks foul. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one when he Well, got to pause on that thought as that’ll do it for the inning. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. They lead it 2-1. as we go to the top of the fourth. Now here is Gavin Sheets fought off foul. You know, these Padres’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. He’s only giving up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. He makes the grab and there’s one down. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Yeah. And here comes Sander Bogarts. Went down on strikes his first time through. in the air. Right field. Walker has a beat on it. Hauls it in for the owl. And there’s two away. Now batting the center. Yeah. The batter now. Jackson Merrill 0 for one so far. Off the mark there. Ball one. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. That’s off the inside corner. And it’s 2 and 0. And that one clips the corner. Yeah, that’s fouled off out towards right center field. Scott sizes this one up, makes the grab, and that’ll end the inning. Nothing doing for the offense that time to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Cardinals two and the Padres’s one. Back here in St. Louis, John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Wilson Contrarus. St. Louis. And there’s the strike. He’s been known to jump all over the first pitch. So that seems like a missed opportunity right there. That’s outside. And that is ball one. Out to short. Bogarts fields it cleanly, whips it to first, and Contrarus is retired. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. So now it’s Dolan Aronado for one. He hit into a fieldielder’s choice his first time. In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Bases empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. next offering down low and in the dirt gets a piece and stays alive. Let’s go. One and two here. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Line drive. That’s a hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. And man, I’ll tell you, a line drive like that into the gap just feels so good. It’s feedback that you had everything on time and in control from start to finish with your swing. Now, a chance for Mason Win. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. That clips the corner man at first one away and that one is lifted in the air. Merryill pulls it in for the out. Now batting right fielder Jordan Walker. So digging in Jordan Walker caught looking his first time up. Come on. Just missed. And there’s the strike. Aronado off of first with two away swing and this one’s bounced on the ground. Wade flips it. Nicely done for the out. The Cards leave one as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the fifth. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. Mats back to work. Ripped, but it curls. Foul. You know, these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Steven Matz done for the afternoon. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this new arm of the mound for the Cardinals. Sunny Gray. still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Tyler Wade, the next up for the Padres’s, he’s 0 for one. Swings and misses. Strike one. and fouled off with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. That misses. Yeah, the count one and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. Nobody out. Runner at first. Just misses there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. lifted in the air down the left side. Falls it in and there’s one away. Now batting catcher Elias Diaz. Here’s Elias Diaz grounded out his first time up. definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play and that is out of play. Tying run is at first and we’re in the top of the fifth. Pitch misses and it’s a ball and a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Phil Maton getting loose out there. Palante warming up as well. Liner and this could be trouble. Croninworth around second headed for third. He boots it. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, man aboard, one down, and it’s Tatis at the plate. First pitch, and he just misses. that now that one missed. One out and a runner at second. Just missed. Well, this is a little tough for the hitter in the back of the mind. You’re wondering with first base open, am I going to get a pitch to hit? Got to stay back. Let your hands work. Stay in the middle of the field. Swing and a highfly ball out towards right field. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting the designated hitter Luis Arise. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position and next is the designated hitter Luis Arise. One for two. First offering and it just misses. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Walker sizing this one up, squeezes it, and that’s the third out. Padres’s with a runcoring double. Two two game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth now. Up for St. Louis. Yoel Poso. 3 line drive caught. Nice swing and good solid contact. That ball was smoke, but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more back spin. And now Victor Scott 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. And now the lineup turns over with one away. Everything came together for him. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Back to the top of the lineup. Brendan Donovan getting ready to hit on the ground left side. Six four three double play and the inning is over. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second base from the shortstop. Perfect turn and they’re out of this jam. Back here at Bush Stadium. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. So, digging in now for San Diego, Manny Machado. And there’s the strike. Some hitters are just more confident. They can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01 outside. And that’s ball one. movement in the bullpen. Phil Mat, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Cards. The 1-1 is fouled off. Got him. And there’s one away. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. He’s been a great free agent side. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. All tied up. And we’re the top half of the sixth. That one is upstairs. And that one fouled off. Hard on the ground to first. Contrarus takes it himself and that quickly two away. Here’s Xander Bogarts bowl for two in this one. The shorts stop takes a ball. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s one and one. It’s strike two. Aronado. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Score remains 2-2. Back here in St. Louis. Bottom of the sixth inning. Here’s the Cardinal DH. Ivon Herrera. And that one hammered. That’s back. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Safe at second with nobody out. And that double has the go-ahead run and scoring position. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. Line drive. Base hit. And they get it in quickly. First and third now with nobody out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Dylan CE done for the day. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now Nick Paveta on the pitch here and he has some nasty breaking stuff. Pava. So runners at the corners. Nobody out. Wilson Contras now up to the plate. That one misses. One and0. Sliced hard but foul. And a curve is down and in. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. And that one fouled off. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next and just misses with that one. That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated. So, he’s going to have to collect himself a little. 3-2. Got him. Foul tip. Strike three. Man, I really like the ability to bounce back right there after not getting the call he probably should have gotten. Didn’t let it affect his focus and he came back with another good pitch to get him swinging. Here’s Nolan Aronado. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. That one is absolutely belted. Out of here. He’ll take a trot around the bases. It’s 52. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. And the batter now, Mason Win. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Diaz pulls it down and there’s two gone. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run. Not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that. Two down, base is empty. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. And there’s a foul ball. Two gone, base is empty, but three runs across here in the bottom of the sixth. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Adrien up and loosening in the pen. Matsui getting cranked up as well. Swing and a miss. Two straight. Yeah, the one two misses to even the count. Two out. Space is empty. And the sweeper is off the plate. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Highfly ball out towards left center. Cheats under it. That is the inning. St. Louis gets three on the homer. It’s 52. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, John King. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big ERA. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. King Jackson Merrill at the dish. Now, if you look at his early accomplishments, most start by calling him the youngest player ever to do something. Yeah. Do you have an example? Of course I do. Jackson Merrill is the youngest player all time with a multih homer game, including a walk-off home run. Now, that’s a good night at the yard. The 02 foul ball left side. He’ll see another and there’s a ball. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Foul ball still a one and two count. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Got him. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Next for the Padres’s, Jake Croninworth. He’s two for two. That one ripped and it gets into the corner, but it’s foul. King, he’s someone that fills up the strike zone, so he doesn’t give up a lot of walks, but because he’s in the zone so much, a decent amount of hits occur on the ground to first and two away to start the seventh. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff, just like we saw. Two outs, space is empty. Tyler Wade will hit next. That one outside. Ball one. And he’s got to get ahead early in the count and then be able to mix up his speeds, add and subtract some velocity. But command is the big key. Throwing the ball where he wants to. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire and he felt this was his time. And that is low for ball four. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. John King out of the game. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching new pitcher for the Cardinals, Andre Grano. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Andre Glano runner at first with two away. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Cardinal grounds one to short. Quinn sends it across to first and that is that and the Red Birds bullpen comes through midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Cardinals five and the Padres’s two. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Adrien Morome and we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. And now the Cardinals catcher, Johel Poso. Catcher number 63. And that misses off the outside edge inside. And that’s ball two. That finds the mark on the inside corner. And that’s outside. And that’s ball three. Check swing called strike. That one ripped left field and it one hops the wall. Now he’ll turn for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there off the bat. That one registered at 105 mph. Man, that is smoking. And these days, you hear it all the time, but the numbers just don’t lie. If you can drive a ball like that, more often than not, you’re picking up a knock. So, up next, Victor Scott trying to bunt his way on. Croninworth to first save and runners at the corners after the infield single. It doesn’t surprise anyone when he gets on base by dropping down a bunt. I mean, this is just the latest example of him using his speed to his advantage and showing off his skills with the bat. That was very nice. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. Now, it’s the second baseman. Brendan Donovan 0 for three in this one. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. Ground ball could be two onto Bogarts and a run scores on the double play. First and third, nobody out. You’re thinking you’ve got it lined up for a pretty big inning right here. So that double play is pretty deflating. They get the run in, but now they’re starting all over. And now here is Ivon Herrera. One for three on the ground to the left and it goes just foul, two outs, and a swing and a miss. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it and that’s off the inside edge. Going to count one and two. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished inside. Almost got him. two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the bottom of the seventh. Swing and a fly ball well struck left field. Sheets makes the play and that’ll do it. So they get one run, two hits, no errors and no one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals six and the Padres’s two. And we’re back. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. up and in. And that’s ball one. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Let’s win upstairs. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Luis the next up for the Padres’s. If you’re gonna get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving. Don’t try to do too much.” Oh, can’t get out of the way of the fast and that’s going to sting. Manny Machado up to the plate 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. close but called a ball. Ball one. He was looking to come up with the shutdown inning and off to a shaky start. Swag and a miss. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Ryan Hley, the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Romero, a left-hander, also throwing. Cardinal. The one-1 is fouled off. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensures safety for the fans. Last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit. line drive and this might be trouble. Here comes Tatis around third. One run is in coming home. The relay to the plate. He’ll score. Two runs are in. And now just a two-run deficit. He was all over that one. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside. saw it deep into the zone and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. Now, a huge atbat in this game coming up. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Andre Greno will depart. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Jojo Romero into the game. Pretty big spot he’s coming into trying to strand that runner at second base. So, he’s going to need to make some quality pitches. He does have first open if he needs to use it. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. And the first offering is not close. with the tying run at the plate. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Two balls, no strikes to count. Fast ball for a strike. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. Xander Bogarts in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Runner at second. Nobody out. Swing and a miss. and he struck him out and one gone. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Here’s Bogards now. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Tying run at the plate. Fouled off down the right side. Next offering is down low. swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s out number two. Stepping in for San Diego. Jackson Merrill. Jackson. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is, I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head. That one finds the corner and two now. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Next pitch is downstairs. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. hit on the ground a short win. That ends the inning and they limit the damage, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now a 64 ball game. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Yuki Matsui. Well, walks have certainly been an issue for him this season, so we’ll see what kind of command he has. 345 do up for the home team. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. There’s the strike. Matsui in his second season, 29 years old and he was born in Japan. Swings over the top of that one. And Gary Simmons punches him out. That’s a strike out. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. That one the other way. Snags it for the second out. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Two down, base is empty. Natto comes in to take his cuts. He’s already homered here in this one. And that misses. And that is ball one. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Steven Kolick getting ready to go. Two down. Nobody on. Swing a popup. Foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Ground ball right side and foul ball. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that one hops the wall. Safe at second with a double. Third hit for him this afternoon. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Mason Win in there at the knees. ball one there. Pop foul out of play off to the right. man at second. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. And that is that. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals six, Padres’s four. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer, Ryan Hley. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. And here’s the first baseman, Jake Croninworth. And that drops in for a strike. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One ball, one strike. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. That catches the corner. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Scott sizes this one up and there’s one down now Tyler Wade. He’s two outs away. So digging in now for San Diego, Tyler Wade in the dirt and it’s one and0. Let’s go. And that skips in the dirt. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. In for a strike and a count two one. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never had a chance. Swing get a ball popped up. Quinn towards the line. Won’t get to this one. It drops. Foul. One down. Base is empty. swing and a miss. Now only one out remaining. Oh, we see it more commonly in the sport these days, but man, a tripledigit fast blown right by someone is still pretty awesome to witness. I mean, you got to be geared up and ready to swing it when a guy like this comes out of the bullpen because that fast ball, it eats. And if you’re not ready, you’re going to be walking back to the dugout. Diaz stands in with two away as he takes a ball. The Cards up by two here in the top of the ninth. And another ball Next offering in there for a strike and the count two and one This one in the air, Donovan. And that’ll do it. Well, this was a total team effort using six pitchers in this ball game to get the win. Outstanding job of passing the baton, the next pitcher stepping up and getting it done. You got to give them a lot of credit cuz this is not easy to do. We’ll see how it affects them over the next couple of days. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
