MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 24, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Major League Baseball on tap on this Thursday night. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. And now, please welcome First Pitch coming your way next. St. Cardinals almost ready to get underway. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michael. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this, every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark, in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Fernando Tatiz Jr. the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one and he swings and lifts one to deep center field back there and brings it in at the wall. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. This is a veteran le lineup right here. A lot of players with plenty of experience singing. Yeah, no doubt about that, Boog. These players have been around the game for a long time. And they may not have the flash that they once did, but they’ve got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations, be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent. And you always seem to see a team like this, they come to the ballpark, they know how to get down to business, and they understand what the job is at hand. Next pitch is outside. That one the other way and it’s into the gap around first. Heading for two. [Music] Not in time. He’s safe. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. One down, runner at third. Manny Machado the next up for the Padres’s. First pitch and it just misses. [Music] And Manny gets a piece. right side hard hit. Takes it to the bag, steps on first and it’s out number two. Batting fourth, the designated hitter, Xander Bogarts. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And here is Xander Bogarts. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. Come on. That misses off the outside edge. Arise on third with two out. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s one and two. goes down swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for a strike three. One hit in the inning, a triple, but they leave him stranded. Now the Cardinals will see what they can do. There’s no score. back here in St. Louis and on the hill you Darvish and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Fouled off to the right. [Music] Next offering in there for a strike. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. swing and a line drive. And that one’s a base hit out of left center field. So runner aboard to start the inner. Batting second designated hitter, Ivon. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Ivon Herrera. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Here goes 5 feet 11 in 220 lbs. And he’s usually a catcher. Today he gets off his legs a bit. He’s the DH. And this one squirts away from the catcher. No advance though. Nobody out. Runner of first. swings and misses. Went back to the slider and it was a good idea. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Here’s the left fielder, Alec Burlson. clips the corner and it’s 0 and one. And one [Music] ball one there. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield towards first into the outfield. Base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. exciting high base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus 10 in the dirt. Runners stay put. That’s ball one. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. The pitch close but called a ball and it’s 2 and 0. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Darish kicks, delivers, and another ball. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position. All hitters count. Nolan Aronado in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Here’s Nolan Aronado. This one chopped on the ground but foul. [Applause] And that one is in for a strike at 95 and two. Base is loaded. One away. [Music] that misses and it’s one and two. O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. [Applause] Stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Darvish delivers. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Applause] Swings and misses. Struck him out. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. the infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. And up next for St. Louis, Mason Win. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two in there for a strike at the top of the zone. [Applause] this to third to first, but he pulls it off the bag. Well, I definitely think the speed down the line played a factor on that throw. He had more time than he thought, but as a fielder, the speed of the game and the speed of the runner sometimes can get in your head. And he just rushed it and failed to make a clean throw. Two outs, bases full. Here’s the catcher, Johel Po. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Swinging a miss. Strike one. 01’s the count. [Applause] Cronin work tosses to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. It’s on to inning number two in St. Louis. It’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing. And we’re back now. The left fielder Gavin Sheetsielder Gavin Sheets. Michael back to work out to short. One out in second. Batting six. Shorts stop. Jose Iglacius. Jose Eacius will hit next. In the air to left down the line. Burlson gets under it. Reaching for it. Makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. So, up next, Jake Croninworth off to a great start. He’s really cruising out there on the mound. He’s got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches. That could set him up to go deep into this game. Next pitch way upstairs. Two out. Space is empty. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So they go quietly there. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing. Bottom half of inning number two now up for St. Louis. Jordan Walker Walker [Applause] swinging a foul straight back down the line and that’s a foul ball. in the dirt and the count. One and two. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Oh, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone, and then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early, and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. So digging in, Victor Scott. That’s down and in. That one finds the zone and the count one and one. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, Boo. He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with it. One strike. That’s a little bit low. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Right through there for a strike. One out. Base is empty. Right side. And that chance handled to first. Already two out here in the home half of inning number two. Now batting second base. So two out now. And here is Brendan Donovan. Scored the first run of the game back in the first after a single to reach base. Swinging a foul out of play. [Music] That one to first and foul ball. [Music] fights it off. He’ll see another. [Music] That missed by a lot. Now one and two. And they’ll do it again. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. Cut out and miss. Curve ball struck him out and down in order go the Cardinals, but they still lead it one- nothing. New inning getting started. Digging in is the switch in outfielder Rice Johnson. for you. First off, and it just misses. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. The 1-1 line drive. Pandles throws to first and one away in the top of the third. That ninth catcher Elias Diaz. Next it’s the catcher for the Padres’s Elias Diaz. All right. First pitch misses. swinging a miss as he was late. Threw that fast right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. On the ground to the left and that’s just foul. That one in the dirt and it’s a full count. Lifted in the air right center field. Walker moves towards it and there’s two away. Now batting center fielder Fernando. So the San Diego batting order turns over and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. fly to center his first time. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Contraras under it. And he’s got it. Padres’s go down quietly. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning. Here’s a Cardinal DH. Ivon Herrera. Herrera. Come on Cardinal. Swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for hit and it gets by him and he’ll pull into second safely. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. [Applause] Alec Burlson digs in now. One for one with a single so far. Smoked on the ground to second. Croninworth throws on to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. It’s early, but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score. That’s exactly what happens. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Contras [Applause] the next to hit, takes outside. Here stands at third with one gone in the inning. That one blasted deep to right way back there. And that one is out of here. He shoots one out to right. His 13th home run of the season. It’s 3 nothing. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. the challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Here’s Nolan Aronado. He struck out swinging at his first at [Applause] right through there for a strike. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. No balls, two strikes. Oh, that’s off the plate. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch and he chases that one now. Five strikeouts for him on the M. Well, that’s the money maker right there. two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. [Applause] Win at the plate with two away. Swings through that one. Sometimes a hitter will go up there and guess. And it’s not just pulling something out of the sky, but expecting because of tendencies a certain pitch in a certain location. He just guessed wrong. Highfly ball out into left center field. Sheets makes the catch and that’ll do it. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. It’s now three nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show back here at Bush Stadium. John Chi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Luis Azad. Ball one, no strikes. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Fast ball for a strike [Applause] outside. Two balls in a strike. Top of the zone for a called strike. Next offering is down low. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball. Something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk. Ripped to short, snagged on a bounce and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. Now batting third baseman Manny Machado. Now Machado up here grounded out his first time. You can do it. You can do it. First pitch swinging and it’s a knock and they have their first hit since the first inning. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Bogarts stands in now and watches strike one. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Bats in there. No balls, two strikes. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with the punch out. the only guy in the lineup with that strike out. But you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. Out there to center and that’ll get down for a hit and out to a board. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Two on, one out. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. first pitch and that’s in for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. The 01 just [Music] that one missed. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Machado on second. Bogarts at first. One gone. That one misses. Three and one. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Two on, one out. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. And they’re all loaded up. Now batting shortstop. Hosea Glacius. The next up for the Padres’s. He’s 0 for one. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in. And he spits on that one. Just missed. Pressures on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. And that is out of play. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tiny on the fast ball. right side base hit. One run is in. Here comes the throw, but it’s offline. He will score. Now batting second baseman Jake. So up next, Jake Croninworth 0 for one. But he grounded out in his first at back. That is upstairs for ball one. [Applause] Swinging a drive deep right field. And that’s a fair ball. The Glaciius rounds third headed for the plate. He scores and they have the lead. Well, he was a little off balance. He got the front foot down but was so great at keeping the hands back and allowed him still to get good wood to this baseball. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. Stepping in for San Diego, Bryce Johnson. Grounded out his first time up [Applause] in the dirt. Well, a really rough inning out there on the mound and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy’s toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward. Up the middle throws to first in time. Now batting catcher Elias Diaz. And here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. Fly to right, his first time. Blind drive. That’s a base hit out of the left center field. Here comes Croninworth around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. It’s 53. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Off the bat, it was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you got some real estate to run on. It’s such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. That one misses. Ball one. Tatis goes 6′ 3 in. 26 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Offense exploding for five so far in the inning. Top half of inning number four. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. And that one is going to go and El Nino goes deep. His 17th of the year. And they add to the lead. It’s 73. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. a slider right down the middle of the plate. It’s like slow motion for a hitter. You’re just licking your chops, waiting for it to arrive and you want to hit it a long way and he did. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Miles Michaels won’t go any further tonight and this is one he’d like to forget. back with a new arm after this. Now pitching a new pitcher in the game, Andre Palante. Well, they didn’t get much length out of their starter in this one, so they’ve got a lot of outs to eat up in that bullpen. I think they’ll look for some length out of him right here if they can get it. So, two away with nobody on. Luis Arise stands in. Check swing called strike. All ones the count. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off. [Applause] Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. The final damage here. They bat around. 10 come to the plate. Seven runs on the board to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Padres’s seven and the Cardinals three. Bottom of the fourth. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Joho number 63. That’s off the mark. Ball one. You know, these cards showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. [Music] Three and two. [Music] swinging at ball four. That was off the outside edge. That was a tough slider right there. He couldn’t get a piece of it just to try to keep the at bat alive. And hitters will tell you that slider when a guy’s able to really tunnel the pitch where it looks like a fast ball and then late has a really good bite. So tough to lay off of because you’ve made the decision you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball and then you swing and you miss. You go back to the dugout shaking your head. Walker batting for the second time and that’s strike one. That clips the corner. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Next offering is down low. Going to count one and two. I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. And now Victor Scott rolled out to second in his first at this guy’s just a tremendously talented center fielder. Gold glove caliber type out there offensively. He can do some things, but you know, also has some streakiness as well. I think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out. You know, he saves runs in the outfield, so that’s going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish. Two down. Doan gets the call and it’s on two. [Music] And that just misses. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level, have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. That one just misses. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. struck him out swinging and he strikes out the side for the second time today. Three up, three down that time. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Padres 7 and the Cardinals three. All set for the start of the inning. And here is Manny Machado. Manny Machado. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Man aboard on the leadoff single. And here comes Xander Bogarts. One for two. Fast for a strike. You know, these Padres’s putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. And a foul ball [Music] gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One ball. This one in the dirt. Goes down looking. [Applause] Now the left fielder Gavin Sheets. Leftielder Gavin Sheets. Yeah, big swing and a miss in the on deck circle. You really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable. That one ripped and it one hops the wall. Here comes Machado around third. Relay throw home and he’s out. Well, this just can’t happen right there. You can’t try to from first base with less than two outs unless you can pretty much walk across the ditch. And to get thrown out like that really throws water on the fire of a rally in this inning. Next to hit, Josea Glaciius, runner at second, two down and we’re in the top of the fifth. And that drops in for a strike. perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. One left for San Diego, but they still lead it. 73. Back here in St. Louis, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Donovan. [Music] Darvish back to work. And that one missing low. [Music] Slapped foul. That’s outside and it’s two and one. You know, these Cardinals digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. And now it’s filled up. 32 [Music] in the air fairly deep to right field. Johnson makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter and stepping in for the Cardinals, Ivon Herrera. [Applause] Swang and a ball lifted in the air and there are two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. And you feel like a wide receiver playing football. Burlson up to hit for the third time as he lays off inside. Ball one. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Jeremiah Estrada appears to be getting loose. a left-hander also throwing. Two outs. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Not sure if he could be in more of a groove. Looks really relaxed. He’s retired seven straight. This guy’s feeling it right now. Swings and misses. And the count one and two. Two strikes. And that’s outside. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. swings and misses. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. Deficit remains at four. It’s 73. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Here’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. And that’s in for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Sunny Gray, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Ley getting loose as well. [Music] Outside low and the count even one and one. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Scott brings it in. One up, one down. Up next for the Padres’s right. Next for the Padres’s, Bryce Johnson has grounded out a couple of times on the ground right side. tosses to first and they got him. Two down, base is empty. Elias Diaz the next up for the Padres’s. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That one is upstairs. One ball, one strike. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Fights that one away. Still one and two. In there. Got him looking. And that one split the plate. Nothing across here this half. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Padres’s seven and the Cardinals three. Now pitching for Jeremiah Estrada gets handed the rock out of the pen. Well, he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin. His strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season. Leading off for the Cardinals, first baseman Wilson Contra. [Applause] Pop foul out of play off to the right. And that misses one and one. [Music] Yeah, there’s a ball and Wilson down on strikes. Wow, just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Aronado at the plate and takes high there. Activity in the bullpen. Yuki Matsui up and loosening in the pen. One down, base is empty into center and that’ll fall for a base hit. Now batting shortstop Mason digging in. Mason win. Now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. That one down the line, slides, but it gets by him. Aronado makes the turn at second. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Now batting. Here’s the catcher, Johel Poso. Go for two in this one. Swing and a miss. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. [Music] Pitch is in there. And that is strike two. Great spot to be in right here for the pitcher. He can either strike this guy out or get a ground ball double play. Two on, one out. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Squirts away a little bit. One ball to second, but way too late. Safe there. win into scoring position on the wild pitch. And there goes the double play possibility. [Applause] Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Swings through it for the K. Some high cheese for strike three. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Estrada, he’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. 01 now. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. as a hitter. When a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you and it’s just attack mode coming right at you expecting to get a swinging miss. Next pitch off the play, two and one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Highfly ball down the left field line. Sheets on his way over and that’s the third out. So the Cards strand a couple. They’re down four. It’s seven to three. And we’re back. And now the center fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. Jun. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Swinging a miss at a slider. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. Two strike. And that’s downstairs and outside. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. And now, Luis Azine, [Applause] base hit. And the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out right there. He does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Manny Machado. Here’s Manny Machado. Fast for a strike. Let’s do it. Next offering is downstairs. Arise leads off first with one away. That one at 95 missed up top. And that’s ball two. Runner. Runner takes off. That one fouled off. You can do it. Next offering upstairs. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Gets a piece and stays alive. Man at first. One away. Out of the ground to third. There’s one out on the first double play and that’s the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors and no one left. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Padres’s seven and the Cardinals three. So the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Adrien bringing in the lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. So, digging in, Victor Scott. The Cards in striking distance, but had some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. And that bunny towards first arrives, steps on the bag, and the bun attempt doesn’t work out. Well, I think the defense was anticipating something here because they were really ready to defend as that ball was put down. Nice little drag bunt, but they get the out and way to go. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan, one for three. Morah, a lefty who lights up the radar gun, 26 years old and he was born in Cuba. And he pumps in a strike. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the seventh. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. outside low and the count is one and two. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. [Music] One down. Base is empty. fouls it off. Still one and two. [Music] Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. [Music] Next pitch misses way outside. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Next offering misses down and away. He goes down looking. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. Was hoping he’d get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards game. Two outs. Space is empty. Ivon Herrera next up for the Cardinals. There’s the strike. Slider misses outside. swinging a ground ball up the middle. Inning over. Starting to run out of outs as they’re unable to chip away. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s seven and the Cardinals three. Now pitching. Welcome back. get a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kyle Lee. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Here’s Xander Bogart. Off to the Padres. The designated hitter, Xander Bogarts. ripped but a curls foul. He’s bagging. Give me that pitch one more time. A hanging change up just out in front. Swinging a ground ball. Aronado zips it across. Bogart’s retired. Now batting left fielder Gavin Sheets. So digging in now for San Diego, Gavin Sheets. That one in 95 missed up top and it’s one and0. Action in the pen down there. Sunny Gray getting loose out there. that finds the mark on the inside corner and that’s outside and the count two and one now that one missed and now a little barking back towards the umpire clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. And that’s in for a strike. Now three and two and that one hammered Scott going back and he makes the catch on the track. Just missed a homer that time. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. [Applause] And a foul ball. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Got him swinging. Padres’s down in order, but they lead it by four. It’s 73. Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jason Adams. He’s thrown the ball very well overall this season. and he’s been really tough to get to. You see that erra and that’s where you love to be. Here’s the left fielder. Left fielder Alec Berles. That’s off the mark. One and0. St. Louis. Foul ball. Ball two. [Music] Next pitch is downstairs. Grow ball right side. Croninworth throws on to first. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Now batting first baseman Wilson Contrus. And next is the Cardinals four hitter Wilson Contrus. He’s already homerred in this game. And that’s in there at the knees. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Yuki Matsui appears to be getting ready. And I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. No balls, two strikes. Fly ball down the line. Sheets right there to make the grab. Two down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Aronado in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Next offering is down low. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That’s back there. Gone. That one felt good. His 11th of the year. It’s 74. [Applause] It’s like he’s playing whipple ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. The slight opposite field into the gap, man. Making it look easy, that’s for sure. Base is empty with two away. Now here is Mason Win. Short stop takes the ball. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Adam maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. [Applause] And now three and one. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. I I liking it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. beat him with a fast ball, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now a 74 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Jojo Romero. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Jake Croninworth getting ready to hit second base. Bottom of the zone and a cold stride. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Ball one there. break. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike and Jake has entered the K zone. Now that right stepping in for San Diego, Bryce Johnson. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. [Applause] That’s too low. And that’s ball one. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the top of the ninth. hit on the ground. A short win tosses across to first and a couple of quick outs. Now betting catcher Elias Diaz. Elias Diaz now at the plate. [Applause] That one not close. And that’s ball one. [Applause] on its way to the corner. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. Swearing in a miss one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Bottom part of the order. 789. Two up in inning number nine. It’s the Padres’s seven and the Cardinals four. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Robert Suarez. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with the W. And now Yelpo 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And there’s the strike. 0 and one. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Applause] [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball in the air left field. One down. Now batting right fielder. And up next for St. Louis, Jordan Walker 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. [Applause] just went out. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. The Padres’s trying to close out a three-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning and it is two and one [Applause] now. One missed swings through that. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. So they’re down to their final out. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. 0 for three in this one. [Applause] [Music] Just missed. One. Ball one. No strikes. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] That one in triple digits. This could end it. Pitch misses there. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] Fouls it back with two strikes on the ground. right side dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they can’t get the out. Blown out away from this game being over, but an infield single keeps them alive. They’re still breathing and maybe this provides that last minute spark. So, back to the top of the order, Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. [Applause] And that’s in there for strike one. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. [Music] two outs and a foul ball. He stays alive. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching, and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. This one finishes with a final of 7 to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. What the heat?
