Phenomenal article with alot of new information in it that i'm going to sum up below.
1: Perrotto says that it's an embarrassment that the front office spent a high pick on a guy like angel cervantes without checking first to see if he'd sign or knowing he'd sign. He said it's embarrassing that both ben cherington didn't do their due diligence on this and the director of pro scouting jason horowitz didn't. He said that gambling on a 9th round pick is fine and dandy but gambling on a second round pick like cervantes is inexcusable and frankly mismanagement by this organization which i agree with completely. He also said he got texts from people around the league who were baffled that this could've even happened.
2: I'm copying this directly from Perrotto's article 'give it a click plz because it's a great read' because it's the most crucial piece of information in this entire article. I'm posting this entire quote down below.
"According to sources with direct knowledge of the situation, Nutting raised the baseball operations’ budget by $20 million at the end of last season. Cherington opted to spend a significant portion of that money on analytics and technology rather than acquiring players" So ben cherington directly chose to spend 20 million dollars on nothing essentially. We spent it all on analytics instead of signing any players in free agency. Great job on that one ben because obviously we didn't need to sign any players!!!!

20 million on nothing. He also said that bob nutting is at the park more often because people in the MLB’s central office are getting more and more frustrated at the pirates organization for being as bad as they’re, and that it’s embarrassing that one of the sports oldest franchises is so bad. So people high up on the ladder are turning their gaze to this organization and pressure is mounting on bob nutting.
The front office was working on a data project in the fall of ‘23, that they were still advertising for a position to get it off the ground this summer. They honestly can’t even do the little things right. It’s a total crap show top to bottom. I do not understand how they are dragging this out and letting Cherington handle the draft and the trade deadline.
Broke: Having the Cobra on your team
Woke: Having the Python ^((programmers)) on your team
I’ve seen an alarming number of people defending the complete waste of a 2nd round pick. This guy does NOT deserve any benefit of the doubt. He completely fucked that up just like he has fucked up nearly every single decision he has made as GM of this team for SIX YEARS.
The money spent on analytics nerds instead of Major League Baseball players is well known at this point but he needs to be dragged for it at every opportunity until his ass is out of Pittsburgh.
Spending money on R&D is certainly not essentially nothing. The Rockies and A’s notoriously have small R&D departments year after year. The Dodgers, Rays, Guardians, Tigers, and a few other consistently good teams recently have some of the bigger departments in the league. Give the Pirates situation spending 20 mil on a few players will roughly give them 3 or so WAR (based on average WAR/$ numbers). Focusing some money into the front office and on technology will help develop the players in house, who are more affordable with team control. That’s how the Rays and Guardians succeed with a small budget.
I find it hard to take anything else in the article seriously if he disagrees with this move
Easy answer. All of them.
What if I told you a strong analytics department is important and increasing operations budgets shouldn’t have a direct correlation to the budget for the roster?
We could’ve rented Kyle Tucker (making 16.9 million this year) and pay out another 3 million for “analytics” to analyze other trades. What a freakin bonehead
[“Nutting is said to be a more frequent visitor to the ballpark this season, trying to ascertain why the Pirates have a 42-61 record during a season in which they entered with postseason aspirations”](https://media0.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTZjMDliOTUyampyY2ZtZGhpeW1iZ2tqOTRwc3VjZ2pnNnFqbWJtbzFud3g1M2Q0MiZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/7Eipor01ypMm3LeG4v/giphy.gif)
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.
It’s possible that they are just that far behind on baseball tech. I remember that they spent a bunch on nutrition and wearable tech around 2015, wonder if they just stopped investing after that outlay and they needed to upgrade.
Either way, they are the worst offense in the league by 20 runs right now. 20mm in players wouldn’t fix that.
