SAN DIEGO PADRES VS ST LOUIS CARDINALS ⚾ MLB REGULAR SEASON | JUL 24, 2025
about the work level that it takes to be a Major League Baseball player. The level of work like up here is it’s on another level. Like you don’t see anybody in the clubhouse ever. And I think at first I was like, where is everybody at? And then you realize like why there’s nobody in the clubhouse. They’re not not in the clubhouse just cuz they’re just hiding out. They’re they’re in getting work done. They’re in getting the lift in. I mean, just being around these guys and seeing like the work they prep like the work they doing like day in and day out is it’s unbelievable. just like just the work they put in on their bodies when they go out to catch play, how serious they take catch play, how serious they take their bodies and how serious they take the food they put into their bodies. It’s it’s it’s so much more than the people see what they just see on TV. It’s a lot more they see in the clubhouse and what you see in the weight room and what you see in the training room. He’s obviously walked in with a lot of confidence because he’s been able to have success at the big league level right away. He says he has that confidence because he knows he’s supposed to be here. I think the biggest reason I’ve I’ve realized these last couple days is like I’m a big believer in God. Um God obviously put me here for a reason. Um he didn’t put me up to here cuz he didn’t think I could do it. So I mean if he’s got this belief in me and then I mean I’ve got to believe in myself cuz he’s not going to put me in in a situation that he doesn’t think I could handle. So I mean I’m kind of upset that I didn’t mention that the first time. It just was there was so much going on. There’s a lot of emotion going on and that should have been my first answer. It was obviously like my my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. part of the process of being a confident major league baseball player is being a confident single AAA baseball player, double A, AAA, so on and so forth. And he talked about that process of gaining confidence at each level of his baseball journey. You go every level and you kind of like you you you get to high A and you’re like, well, I I did good at low A, but now I got to prove it in high A. And the same thing, you get to double A and then you get to triple AAA and then now I’m at the big leagues. And I just think it’s it’s just building that confidence that every single time that I’ve I’ve done I’ve had bad stints. I’ve gone out there and had five innings or five runs and didn’t get an out and and it sucks and you go back and and you contemplate like do I belong at this level. Um then you just realize like you’re here for a reason. Like I said, um God wouldn’t put me here if you didn’t believe in me. So I think that’s one of the biggest things that I’ve I’ve realized is just every single day I I just take every day like a lesson. If I do bad, then it’s even bigger lesson than when I when I do good. You heard him talk about the faith that he has in his last couple answers. He expounded on that a little bit and said that his faith absolutely plays a part in what he does when he’s on the mound. Before I go out to the field, as soon as I’m done um throwing my last pitch, I I’m I’m thanking God for putting me in on in this game. I don’t I don’t pray for for success. I I [Music] [Music] heat [Music] Well, if you look at the infield, they just came out and put, you know, diamond dry everywhere except where McKinstry needed it right here. Wonder when he realized he broke his chain with an All-Star bonus, he can get a new one. I don’t know what is causing this, but we have seen more bats leave players hands at the plate this year than I’ll ever remember. Shot got a chance. [Music] They counted it though. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. Heat. A lot of baseball fans have some familiarity with the T206. American Tobacco card set of course features the famous Hannis Wagner card. What we have here are three cards from the lesserk known T205 set which really was a successor to T206. T206 came out in 1909. These three cards as part of the T205 set came out in 1911. [Music] [Music] We are wrapping up this edition of Amarind to Total Access Cardinals Padres tonight. Generally, this is the time of the show where we tell you what else is going on in the NL Central. Well, that’s easy. Nothing. Or we would tell you what other games that impact the wild card race are going on. Also, nothing there. only five total games tonight uh in all of Major League Baseball and this is actually the only game that involves National League teams as the other four games are all American League matchups. So it’ll be back to a full schedule coming up tomorrow night across Major League Baseball. Sunny Gay is on the mound tonight for the Cardinals. Cardinals are 11-1 in his 12 starts at Bush Stadium. So that’s good news. The Cardinals also have a 689 winning percentage against the Padres since this ballpark opened up in 2006. So hopefully uh each of those things are good omens for tonight’s game. We will just have to wait and see how it’s all going to play out. The voice of the Cardinals, John Rooney along with Ricky Orton. They will have the call of the game. Hopefully we are hearing from Mike Claybornne after the game. That means they start. I’m Jonathan Mayo and for more than 20 years I’ve traced the path of baseball’s rising stars, navigating the back roads of the national pastime and basking in the glow of small town America’s spirit where the team is woven into the fabric of everyday life. This is called a Crawford dog. Hamburger bun. Yes. Two split top Angus beef hot dogs grilled on the skillet on the plancha. And then we do a bacon onion jam with Crawford bok chip. This is how I grew up eating hot dogs. Heat. Heat. [Music] left center profile spreads on. Oh, he lost it. He did not see that ball. He didn’t even come close to it. These interactions between Jayla Cruz and Tito Frankar have been priceless. You got it there. Yes, indeed. And the ball wasn’t the only thing that landed in the basket. What in the world happened out there to Jun Lee? That’s wild. I mean, you don’t see that in the big leagues. [Music] Welcome to St. Louis Cardinals baseball from Bush Stadium downtown St. Louis. It’s the Cardinals and the San Diego Padres’s first of four. Very important series for the Cardinals after they came off a really rough road trip last night, a one and five trip. They were swept in the desert in Arizona and then won just one out of three against the Colorado Rockies. And the Cardinals will go with Sunny Gray tonight who has pitched very well here at Bush Stadium. And this is Ricky Horton. I’ll be alongside the voice of the Cardinals, John Rooney. And Jim Jackson is our producer engineer, Mike Claybourne with us as well. And we’re glad you’re with us on the Cardinals radio network powered by Greybar. Let’s go over our starting lineups here for the first of four with the Western Division San Diego Padres’s. And the starting lineups are presented by Bet 365. The Padres’s are managed, of course, by Mike Schult, a former Cardinal manager. 56-year-old Shilty, long time in the Cardinals minor league system. I feel like food and sharing a meal with someone is a universal language. You can’t go to a ballpark and not have a nice hot dog. So, if I’m at the ballpark, I’m going to get a nice heavy glizzy. You got to have chili on there. You got to have cheese. If your hot dog isn’t bending in the middle because it’s like about to fall apart, then you’re not doing it right. So, you got to have a gizzy and then something cold. Whatever it is, beer, lemonade, you got to have something cold to wash that hot dog down with. [Music] There’s the bunt. That could be trouble as Petri No. Stevie dives in and beats it. Good effort by Steve Lions. That’ll be a base hit right there. Good job. I’ll tell you one thing, not a bad defensive play either by the Tigers. Did you see that? He’s going to get the dirt out and all of a sudden he unbuckled his pants and they fell down. [Music] It’s a fiveman umpiring crew here today and this young superstar. And did their feet get tangled up? Yes. So Hoppy tripped. They got their feet tangled up before the ball came down. That goes helicoptering into the net. It’s Kar. And that ball is off the ladder. It’s actually off the ladder. You never see that. A little tumble behind the mound. Hat fell off. That was awesome. I mean, you just don’t see that. [Music] really. Cardinals have taken the field. Sunonny Gray is completing his warm-up tosses. He will deliver tonight’s first pitch eventually and it will be sponsored by Rawlings as always, the official baseball of Major League Baseball. Let’s talk about the umpires here for this series. Alfonso Marquez is the crew chief of this crew and he will be behind the plate for game one. Clint Vondrach will be at first base, Lance Barrett, the umpire at second, and Tom Hanahan will be over at third base on a very warm night. The scoreboard temperature right now says 95 degrees. I know the feels like is much worse than that. We’ve had heat advisory throughout the St. Louis area and uh and the areas beyond most of the day today. Supposed to break later tonight. We shall see, but it’s still pretty toasty here at Bush Stadium as the crowd still files in for what is going to be an important game against the Padres’s. Over 30,000 expected here as the crowd for the first of four. The Padres’s are eight games over 500 and currently the third wild card in the National League. The Cardinals three and a half games behind them and they play them four games here in St. Louis. The Cardinals were four and three against the Padres’s a season ago. And the ball goes around the infield and back to Sunny Gray who will be making start number 21. And nice to have the voice of the Cardinals back with us and he’s going to give us our first pitch here tonight from Bush Stadium. That of course is John Rooney. All right, thank you Ricky. Good to be back with you and thanks to you and Claves over the past couple of weeks, but it is good to be back home here in St. Louis. The Cardinals and the San Diego Padres’s the first of four. Sunny’s first pitch. A strike called on the outside corner. 6:46 p.m. 93° here in St. Louis. Shadows have covered about half the field. The Sunfield in right and in center field. There’s a line drive base hit to left field for Fernando Tatis Jr. Sunny Gray the last outing a loser on Saturday at Arizona. 11 hits over three and a third, eight earned runs. He allowed two homers. Didn’t walk anybody and struck out five, throwing 66 pitches. This Padre team has not been swinging the bat well lately. Tatis gets the leadoff hit. But what the Cardinals have to fight is the thought that during this last road trip they were outscored 28-1 in the first three innings of all those ball games. Here’s a check swing and a pitch a little bit high to left-handed batting Luis Rise who has won batting titles in both leagues with Miami and then with San Diego. Just getting started here in St. Louis on Thursday night, July 24th. The pitch by Sunny Gray that’s taken for a strike right down the middle at 91 miles an hour. So it’s a hot one here in St. Louis. 72 wonderful degrees in San Diego. The pitch on the way taken high for 11 innings in a third. And in Cleveland at the end of June, it was a one hit shut out, 11 strikeouts, and he went the distance on just 89 pitches. Little Greg Maddox piece right there. True Maddox. Here’s the pitch to a rise. Swung on, lined into right field. That’s a base hit down the line. Walker long way to go to get it. Fernando racing towards third. He’s going to be waved around. On his way home is a rise round second. It’s an RBI double for Luis Arise. And the Padres’s have a one- nothing lead with nobody out here in the first. This is the way you’d love to start an inning. A leadoff single. Luis Arise gets himself in an aggressive count. They tried to sneak the cutter in and he blasts this ball down the right field line. Totty on his horse. Scores from first base. Padres’s get on the board here. One- nothing. So you got to figure the wheels already turning between the ears for Sunny Gray. So yeah, he had a Maddox a one hit shutout. 89 pitches at the end of June. In four starts since he has been terrible with an RA over 7 and a half, including again one of the worst starts of his life his last time out. Here’s Manny check swing and he takes up and away ball one. So go figure. Loves to pitch at home. Two of the four tough ones as of late were away from here. They have won 11 of his 12 starts at Bush Stadium here in 20. Runner on second, nobody out. One and0. and Manny waited on the breaking ball and then knocked it foul into the back stop. Cat is even at a ball and a strike. They are calling the official game time temperature 93°. It’s brought to you by Lineage Watch Company, San Diego’s very own watch brand and the official time piece of the Padres’s Radio Network. Order yours today at lineagewatchcco.com. That’s lineagewatchcco.com. One and one. Manny fouls it off the catcher paj and the count is now one and two. The ACU Jesse says the heat index, the feels like temperature is 104°. That’s the only thing that really matters cuz that’s what we’re feeling. So they could say 93 all at once. It doesn’t feel like 93. No, it does not. Also feels like one- nothing Padres’s arise at second. Nobody out. And Machado swings and misses strength three. So the first out here in the top of the first inning for Sunny Gray and Manny kind of quietly has been slumping a little bit as of late. Really the first time all year it seems. Last series was particularly tough. Sunday Greg gets him to chase the slider down and away for out number one. So here’s Jackson Merrill who had in all three games in Miami and now back in the cleanup spot. First pitch to him and Jackson takes the curve ball low from Gray 1 and 0. Merryill cleaning up for the first time since June 14th. You might remember back on July 8th about three weeks ago, he was dropped down kind of to five and six where he hadn’t been all year long. Now he’s back up in the cleanup spot and he looks here to change up downstairs. Two balls and no strikes from Greg. He’s been a little more selective at the plate to go along with the clean shaving. Starter kind of turned over a new leaf here. I know he said it last week, but he never looked that old, but when he shaved maybe Yeah. could have walked out of middle school with no problem. Two pitch is in the air down the right field line. That’s down at a base hit. A rise rounding 30. He’s going to score. Merryill going to challenge Walker. No. Slams on the brakes. Heads back to first base. It’s an RBI single and a two nothing Padre lead. Just like that, Padres’s take a two nothing lead. The fast ball gets in on the end. It’s not a bad pitch from Gray, but Merill able to muscle it into right field. Padres’s now one for two with runners in scoring position here all in the first inning. So here is Xander who they have announced as Xavier twice now. Bogarts, we heard it during the pregame lineups and they just said it again as he came to bat. They’ve got his name wrong and there’s a reason they keep announcing it wrong that Tony figured out. First pitch and Bogarts takes a strike on the outside corner. It’s a very anchormanish thing, right? They have it on our scorecard as Xavier Bogarts and so I’m sure that is what the PA is reading right now. Don’t know who the public address announcer is here at Bush Stadium, but yeah, I can’t blame him, right? He’s just reading what they give him. Throw to first. Merryill is back. Sunny Gray had a lot of issues with stolen bases last year. This season, he and his captains have done a much much better job controlling the running game. Obviously, if Bogarts has a big night tonight, everyone’s going to want to call him Xavier. Here’s the 01 and it is low and outside even the count of the ball in a strike. Might want to call himself Xavier with a big night. Particularly confusing in my mind because we just saw Xavier Edwards in Miami the last three days. Right. And there not that many X options. You know Xander Xavier usually the two that we’ve come accustomed to knowing. Swing and a miss. One and two. You’ve actually brought up a tremendous question. The number of names that begin with X. You have Xavon Curry. Okay. Xavon. He’s the only other active X guy. And then yeah, I think they’re all Xavier’s. Xander is of course the only Xander in Major League history. One and two to Bogey and a swing and a miss. Got him to chase a sweeper way. Second strike out here in the top of the first inning for Sunny Gray. Look, he’s still going to get his strikeouts. He is not going to issue a ball. And the Padres’s have had some hard hit balls against him here in the first inning. Carol at first. Two down, two nothing. Gavin Sheets coming up. Everything Sunny’s been burned on has been fast balls. Been able to get some punches with the slider and sweeper away from the right-hander with the exception of the leadoff hitter, Fernando Tatis Jr. Gavin cheats gets in left-handed batter, swings at the first pitch, cues it towards third. That’s Aronado Country. He’s got it and a one-footed throw to first base is in time to end the inning. Padres’s get two runs on three hits. They leave a guy after a half in hitting in St. Louis. Padres’s two Cardinals coming up on the Padres’s radio network. Now that baseball season is in full swing, get ready for major league winning when you join the most generous players club in Southern California at like build this for them and spend the last year of coming up with this concept and getting it off the ground and getting everybody here. Like it just feels really good to have everybody coming and experiencing the thing that we’ve been working so hard on. To be able to like take the experiences of Comic-Con and add that to a card show just is really fulfilling because as somebody who grew up going to card shows and still goes to the same card show, the same church basement in Trumbo, Connecticut every month, like it’s great. Card shows are amazing, but to be able to add all of this experience is what makes this great. [Music] [Music] Padres’s with an early two nothing lead. And as Padre fans, we know what makes a great team. That’s why I choose the friendly pros at Petco as my home team for my pets food, vet care, grooming, and more. Petco, official pet partner of the San Diego Padres’s. Nice to get Darish a couple of runs before he begins his night. And the left-hand hitting all-star Brendan Donovan will lead off for the Cardinals. He is their second baseman and Darvish’s first pitch of the night. Pretty much right down the middle with a fast ball. That’s a called strike. Nothing and one. Obviously good to get Darvish a lead. Also good to get a couple of early runs. Remember the three games in Miami. Padres’s total seven runs in three games. Here’s the 01. Donovan lines it sharply over the leap of Fenworth and into right field. A base hit. Jake gave a great effort there. Came up just a little bit short. And Brendan Donovan, the seventh leading hitter in the National League, continues to hit a leadoff single here in the bottom of the first. Always liked his approach at the plate. Cutter catches too much plate. He slaps this ball in the right field. Leadoff knock for Donovan. You and I have kind of kept an unofficial list of guys who know how to hit. You know, we talk about him with grid frequency. A rise certainly the top of the list. Jacob Wilson of the A’s is the newest guy added to that list. Pitch to Herrera is outside ball one. We just saw Xavier Edwards. No relation to Xavier Bogarts in Miami. Uh I think Brendan Donovan could find his way onto that list. I I think so. Even in a year in which he struggled last year, he still found a way to kind of fix that year by the end of the season. Rare the DH takes and on the inside corner. Well played sinker for a strike. one and one really placed a lot on his plate from the moment he he got to this Cardinals team. Starting to come together here in 2025. Runner on first, nobody out. Bottom one. Padres’s lead by two and the 1-1 pitch is fouled at the plate. Strike two to Ivon Herrera who was 5 for 24 on their road trip. Mentioned it at the top. It was not a good road trip for the Cardinals. They went to Arizona, Colorado. Got swept last weekend by the Diamondbacks and then dropped two out of three in Denver, including a shutout loss yesterday to the Rockies. Here’s the one-two pitch that is in there for strength three called. Curveball froze Herrera and one away in the bottom of the first inning. That was the Rocky’s first shutout win since May of last year at Petco. 220 games ago, the longest stretch between shutout wins in major league history. Guess had to end at some point. Here’s Alec Berles, the burly left fielder, left-handed batter, and he takes a little bit outside ball one. Ali Marmal, the Cardinal manager, put it quite succinctly yesterday afternoon at Kors. Quote, “The worst game we’ve played all year.” If you’re curious about the temperature over on the Cardinal side, 1 and0 Berles lifts up the hands and takes a low strike. One and one. Might be my favorite thing about Ali Maro. He’s never one to u not tell you what he’s thinking. We like that in a manager. Absolutely. And look, there’s times when publicly you can’t go all the way, but this would be one of those times where it makes sense. No doubt. Kind of teetering for these guys heading into the deadline. 1-1 in the air the other way to left field. Bryce Johnson out there tonight over towards the line. Plenty of time to get there to make the catch. Two down. Donovan back to first base. And we’ll pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Padres’s radio network. KWFN and KWFN HD1 San Diego. Hi, this is Jackson Merrill. The Padres’s play here on 973 Delan and Odyssey Sports Station with Tony Gwyn Jr. and our producer engineer Dave Marcus. I’m Jesse Agler. Bush Stadium in St. Louis. Two nothing Padres’s. Runner on first. Two outs. Bottom of the first inning. Wilson Contrus the batter. First pitch to him and Darvish’s fast ball basically down the middle for a strike. Nothing at one. Contras if you haven’t been paying attention is now a full-time first baseman DH guy. He no longer catches. and in 97 games this year hitting 258 13 homers and 57 runs batted in. Leads the Cardinals in home runs and RBI’s. 01 slow curve hits the inside corner for a strike. Nothing at two and Contrarus appeared to be absolutely flumxed by that Udarvish offering. I see that look quite a few few times here tonight. But the move to first base has done well for Wilson Contraras this year. Not only offensively, but defensively. Here’s the 0 and2. Contras checks and takes outside. A lot of good reviews for Contras over at first base. They might might have the best defensive infield of baseball. Yeah, they got some guys who can pick it and are high IQ players on the defensive side. Right around first two outs, the one-two pitch popped up right side out of play. They did not do a ton of scoring on that road trip. uh starters got knocked around in a really big way. Their bullpen was great, but unfortunately for the Redbirds, those relievers were coming in with the game kind of out of reach. Teras will use his timeout and back out. They were outscored 38-7 during the six-game trip. So, it has been ugly for the Redbirds. If they lose today, they’ll be 500 for the first time since they were 19 and 19 on May 9th. They are nine and a half games out in the central. Donovan at first, two outs. A ball and two strikes. Pitch to Contreras line over Machado down the left field line. A fair ball towards the corner. Johnson over to get it. Donovan speeding towards third. He’ll be waved on his way. Bogard’s relay to the plate and it got through as the run scores. Contras ends up at third base and the Cardinals on the board. It’s two to one. had a real shot to get him at the dish, but Maldonado unable to handle the throw from Bogarts and no tag was made. Knew they had a chance. Johnson did a great job cutting this ball off before it got to the wall and his throw was on point. I thought it was a good enough throw from Bogey. Maldonado just couldn’t handle it. It beats him instead. It gets away. Contras advances to third on the throw. So the RBI double for Contrarus. He’s near the top of the National League in doubles this year. And as Tony said, he’s at third base. Aronado now with a tying run 90 ft away. And the first pitch to him just kind of served out into right field. Fernando had him played well. Had to back up a couple of steps, kind of stumbled, but able to make the catch and end the inning. Cardinals get a run on two. Hence, they leave Contras at third base. [Music] Control Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Yeah. You got termites? The trust in will score is the Padres’s two and the Cardinals one. So a couple of offenses that have been pretty quiet as of late. Both do damage in the first inning. We’ll see if this game settles in. Jay Cronorth leads off and he takes a fast ball strike from Sunny Gray. Nothing in one. Croninorth Johnson and Maldonado. 789 here in the second inning and Jake Cronorth reaching something of a pretty cool milestone here tonight. A one pitch is high one and one. This is the 431st career start that Jake has made at second base in a Padre uniform and that is more than any Padre has ever started at that position. Here’s the one and one. Ronorth swings and sends it in the air shallow center field. Win went back, but it’ll be Victor Scott the second coming in from center field to make the play. One away. Jake had been tied with Bobby Alamo, the Hall of Famer. 430 starts at second base, but once this game goes official, he will be the new record holder. Congratulations to Jake. Certainly a nothing to kind of smirk about. I mean, that’s a big deal. 431 starts at second base. all times start leader in Padre history. Bryce Johnson now will hit left-handed against Gray and take a fast ball for a strike at the top of the zone. And you know, you think back to the start of Jake Croninworth as a Padre in 2020. First of all, he wasn’t the primary guy acquired in that trade with Tampa Bay. It was Tommy Fam. Jake was a big piece, don’t get me wrong, but he wasn’t the guy everyone was talking about. On one pitch, grounded to second base. Donovan lets it roll to him. He’s got it. And the throw to first in time to get Johnson. Top of the second brought to you by Sinly Food. Ignite your taste buds with the freshest flavors at Sinly Food. Discover authentic ingredients at 4665 Elcohone Boulevard, the cook’s Asian resource. But Jake was, you know, remembered spring training of 2020 before co shut everything down. Kind of looked at as something of a curiosity. Was he going to be a two-way player and maybe do some pitching for the Padres’s in addition to work on the infield? And then co shut everything down in 2020. Cronorth ended up going to San Diego. Here’s Mald Donado swinging at the first pitch and popping it into center field. Victor Scott the second over into left center. He makes the catch. Then a very quick one two three. Top of the second inning. Middle two. It’s the Padre. A lot of baseball fans have some familiarity with the T206 American Tobacco card set. Of course features the famous Hannis Wagner card. What we have here are three cards from the lesserk known T205 set, which really was a successor to T206. T206 came out in 1909. These three cards as part of the T205 set came out in 1911. [Music] [Music] left center profile spreads on. Oh, he lost it. He did not see that ball. He didn’t even come close to it. These interactions between Jayla Cruz and Tito Frankar have been priceless. Okay, you got it there. Yes, indeed. And the ball wasn’t the only thing that landed in the basket. What in the world happened out there to Junhi? That’s wild. Bottom of the second is brought to you by Symbiotica, the official wellness partner of the San Diego Padres’s. Take charge of your health with premium supplements. Visit symbiotica.com. Padres’s up two to one. Mason win. Jordan Walker. Pedro Pah 678. Coming up against Udarish. Got to finish the Jake Croninworth story. Six pitch inning by Sunny Gray trying to cut me off. So 2020 happens. CO shuts down spring training. Jake goes to San Diego basically just so he can work and you know have a place to go and and do some baseball things as limited as they may have been. And that really put him in a position to make the team when the co camp opened over the summer. So he was on the roster kind of as an extra piece when the Padres’s began that 2020 season deep into that year. First pitch to win a right-handed batter is a curveball strike nothing at one. Darbish likes his curveball early on tonight. And then I don’t know it was a week or two into the season. Eric Osmer who was of course starting at first base had what was described to us as some kind of mysterious stomach issue that really was sidelined. 0 and one win fouls it back strike two that gave Jake opportunity uh to go in and do something and he started playing first base played it beautifully he hit like crazy and really from that point on in his Padre career he’s been an everyday player oh and two to Mason Win who’s got a sevename hitting streak will look in now delivered and win takes in the dirt ball one yeah I mean even before that I mean he had to in a truncated completed spring training had to basically play his way onto the team. He was able to do that and then as we talk about often at the big league level, you get an opportunity, you got to cash it in and he’s cashed it in for 431 starts. One and two is hit on the ground over to the right side. Luis Srise has it way off the line. He’ll bring it himself in time and one out in the bottom of the second inning. So yeah, Jake Cronorth now has started more games at second base than any Padre ever has. That’s something to smile about. Brought to you by Smile Spirits. Real vodka cocktails, not a boring selzer. Available at smilespirits.com. Can get in bottle or swing by Baja Ricks before the game and enjoy Smile Spirits before first pitch. Smile Spirits making San Diego smile. One out, nobody on for big Jordan Walker. The right fielder with a cannon arm. Swings at the first pitch, breaks his bat and lines it over Bogarts into left field. A base hit. Walker had a great road trip for them at the dish. Now six in a row with a base hit and a one out knock in the bottom of the second inning. Good example of being beat but staying with the swing. Breaks his bat, but because he didn’t try to kind of shorten the swing or try to do something cuz he knew he was beat, he just stayed with his stroke. Able to get it up over bogey for a single. Does it help to also have superhuman stren? And it does help to be 662 plus man aboard for the number eight hitter PZ and the Cardinal catcher takes outside ball one 2-1 Padres’s runner on first one out in the bottom of the second inning. Stat of the day brought to you by Culligan Water of San Diego providing advanced water treatment solutions including softeners, filters and bottled water. They’re ensuring cleaner, safer and great tasting water for homes and businesses since 1936. One pitch is sent high in the air to left field. Bryce Johnson a little bit over towards left center. Kind of tiptoeing to his left and he makes the catch. Second out of the inning. Walker back to first base. And our stat of the day, if you can believe it, has to do with the Padres’s playing close games. We have seen them endlessly. How about this? 22 of the last 45 Padre games have been decided by one run. Insane. That’s insane. So, when we talk about it every day, there is no exaggeration. Here’s the number nine hitter, Victor Scott. The second left-handed batter, takes a little bit up, one ball and no strikes. Walker at first, two down. Padres’s with a 2-1 lead. Both teams scratching runs across in their halves of the first inning. Scott with great wheels and the one pitch to him is looped foul behind home plate and into the seats. Cat is now one and one. Match of the weather and they beat him down. The other nice thing is the hot wind blowing right in our faces. That’s your favorite. Think you enjoy that most? I mean, is it maybe better than stale air? I don’t know. Have to ask one of the locals. Throw to first. Dad Walker who’s got three steals on the air. goes back pretty easily without a tag from Arise. I don’t know. Blow dryer in the face can dry you out after a while, so it may be worse. Well, the good news is we got 4 days to find out. Stay tuned. All weekend long. Little rush hour baseball back home. Thanks for making us a part of the commute. Pitches outside two and one. Decent enough crowd here in St. Louis. They have not been drawing three. They do have an Aussie Smith back lip bobblehead here tonight. But as we remarked last August when we were here, it was stunning to see this place as empty as it was. Two and one to Victor Scott the second and the slider misses outside to the left-handed hitter. Three and one. Scott had a tough trip. Went three for 19 at the dish in those games against the Diamondbacks and the Rockies. Walker. Pretty good lead over at first base. Held on by Arise. And now the 3-1 pitch is way away. Ball four. That’s the first walk of the night issued by U Darvish. It comes to the number nine hitter. And it puts two men on with two out for Brendan Donovan. So now the lineup turns over and the Cardinals best hitter coming to the plate and Brandon Donovan. Yeah, it’s a bad walk to state the obvious for Darbish. Not that you can’t navigate around stuff like that. He’s been doing it his entire life. Two on and two out. Donovan there. Allstar second baseman has singled and scored. The only run of the night for the Red Birds and he takes a fast ball a little bit in. One and0 not missing by much. He’s missing just in, just off. But this is part of the rust. I think he’s still knocking off. Remember he hadn’t before his first start hadn’t really pitched in a game since spring training. Only his fourth start of the year. One and0 to the left-handed batter. Donovan rips it in the air down the right field line headed towards the wall. Going to go. Three-run homer. Brendan Donovan. Oh, he tore the Padres’s up last season and now two for two tonight as he gives the Red Birds a 4-2 lead. Hung the sweeper center cut. Just finished talking about this is one of the best hitters in the National League. You cannot leave a pitch in that spot. He makes some pay. Three-run shot to right. Cardinals jump ahead. Four to two. I believe that’s one of those you refer to sometimes as a cement mixer. Yes, it’s great visual. Just rolls right up there. So, a threerun homer for Brendan Donovan. Base is empty. Two down for the DHRA. and he takes at the knees a slider for strike one. Well, for the Cardinals, that’s got to feel like 10 runs with the way they’ve been hitting. 42 St. Louis in the bottom of the second inning. No balls and a strike and the pitch inside. One and one. Donovan, a top 10 hitter in the National League, an all-star for the first time. He was their leading hitter last year. Hit 423 against the Padres’s last season. He had a homer, two doubles, and a triple in the seven games. Back at it again, here’s a hard hit grounder up the middle and into center field for Ivon Barrera. Boy, that walk to the number nine hitter. Absolutely huge as the trouble continues here for Darvish in the bottom of the second inning. Another pitch in the middle of the plate. It’s a slider. It’s on the corner, but it’s up that allows the good swing from a rare singles up the middle. Ruben Ya out to chat. Visit to the mound. Brought to you by The Window Depot. Remember, they got shut out at Kors Field yesterday. They now got four runs in two innings, not even full two innings here tonight. Listen, you get shut out in Colorado, I imagine there’s a little bit of embarrassment there and you’re going to come in the next day a little bit more prepared to play. They already have as many hits tonight as they did all day yesterday in Colorado. And again, two outs in the second inning. You know, you mentioned those three runs must feel like 10. It probably feels that way on the other side for the Padres’s who are struggling to score runs of their own. M is it over? Berles, a strong left-handed hitter gets into the box. Dozen homers on the air and he takes the first pitch curveball for a strike. Nothing in one. So, their two biggest power threats now. Berles and Contras who’s on deck are going to test Darvish here with Herrera at first and two away in the second inning. 4-2 Cardinals at Bush. 0 and one. Berles with a wild swing at the miss and the count now 0 and2. Nasty sinker there from Darvis. Now moves to 02. [Music] Herrera at first base with a small lead. 0 and2 to Berles. Darvish delivers and a little bit outside. Cat is one and two. And you’re right. I mean the misses are not by a lot right now. It’s kind of like some fine tuning that needs to take place. That split in particular. Probably don’t want it that height. It was off the plate. Certainly want that pitch to be down. So now one and two to Berles who flew to left his first time in a slow curveball banker the other way up the third base line. kicks off that short wall. So Johnson has to come in and get it. They’ll hold Herrera at third, but Berles into second with a double. That’s just good hitting right there. Tried to back door the curve ball at 69. And with two strikes, Berles able to keep his hands back long enough and just shoot that ball in the open space right down the third baseline. Padres’s fortunate as this ball kicks off cuz if it rolls all the way to the wall, Cardinals would have picked up another run. So they now have more hits tonight in not even two innings than they had yesterday in Colorado. And three of the six Cardinal hits have gone for extra bases. Contras the batter, second and third, two down. They had a slow curve inside nearly hit him ball one. And of course Contreras can’t get hit by a pitch with the best of them. [Music] Gutteras had the RBI double last inning. They got the Cardinals on the board and he is the eighth guy to bat here in the second. Again, the two out walk to Mr. Scott the second. Kind of unlocked the inning. Here’s the one and a big swing in a miss. Got loose on a slider. Could not connect and the count is even. Sometimes it’s the little things that can turn into big things. Two out walk bottom of the lineup to Scott the second and that has turned into three runs so far. One and one to Contras Darves deals and a swing and a miss strike two. You made one start against the Cards last season very early in the year at Petco. He went seven innings allowed three runs but he took the loss and the big hit in that game was a two-run homer by this guy Contreras. Padres’s had a 2-1 lead. He homered to put the Cards up three-2. They’d win 5-2 already with the RBI double tonight. He’s got Burles in at second, Herrera at third, two down. 42 Cards in the second. All two strikes. Darbish delivers. And that’s it in the air to very deep left center field. Johnson’s going back into the gap at the wall. Going to go. Second home run of the inning for the Cardinals. Wilson Contreres adds another extra base hit to the ledger. A threerun homer and it is seven to2 here in the second inning. Another hanging sweeper. This one backed up on Darvis right into Contraras’s barrel. They want it down and away. It ends up middle middle. He couldn’t have split the plate in half anymore. And Another three-run shot, this time off the bat of Contras. And it’s a 7-2 ball game. Pair of threerun homers this inning. And Nolan Aronado will get it. The only guy who hadn’t batted yet here in the second. First pitch to him way high. Ball one. All of a sudden in the Padre bullpen in left field, Matsui, Morgan, and Hart are all starting to move their arms around and loosen up a little bit. A six run in a Maronado with an ugly swing and a man has tried to check when he was about 80% of the way around and the count is even one and one. I mean the tough part is Padre starters just haven’t gone long. Kolic went five and two/3. That’s the longest start the Padres’s have had. One-1 pitch. Aronado rips it in the air down the left field line. that all of a foul and now one and two. I mean, they got a three-run homer this inning with two outs. And then three batters later, another three-run homer this take that back. Pavetto went six the last day in Washington. That’s been the deepest start so far. Everything else has been underneath that. And so those are innings the bullpen has had to cover. Aronado cracks it on the ground as shorts stop. Xander has got it and Bogard throw to first base is in time to end the inning, but damage done. All nine Cardinals come to hit. They get three-run homers from Donovan and Contraras. And we go to the third in [Music] days for the fans. Fernando Tatis Jr. leads off top of the third inning. The Padres’s come to bat against Sunny Gray down 7-2. Cardinals with a pair of three-run homers, both of which came with two outs in the bottom of the second. One to Tatis is a fast ball strike and the count is even one and one. So, I mean, some real heavy lifting is ahead for this Padre offense here tonight. Good news is that it is early, only the third and they’ve already gotten a couple of runs against Sunny Gray. Curveball missing way outside. and two balls in a strike. That’ll be important as the Padres’s try to chip away at this. What kind of bats are they putting together as they try to mount a comeback? That’s where it’s going to start if it’s going to happen. Two and one to Fernando. Gray delivers and a bouncing ball foul at third. Two and two. Hey, if you can get it in your wayback machine and think all the way about the first month, maybe 6 weeks of the season. Remember, comebacks were kind of the specialty of the early year 2025 Padres’s. And we saw a lot of games in which they were down not necessarily seven to two in the third inning, but they were down four or five runs and they came back to make something of it. Pitch is apparently high. It looked good, but Gray doesn’t get the call. And now three and two to Tatis. It has certainly been a while since we have seen the Padre offense pull something like that off, but as they say, no time like the present. Three and two to Tatis. Gray will kick and fire and Fernando sends it in the air to deep right center field. Scott is back into the gap looking up. This one going to go into the Cardinal bullpen. 17th home run of the season for Fernando. He’s two for two on the night and the Padres’s make a loud noise to begin the third inning. It’s seven to three. Those are the type of at bats it’s going to take. Fernando kind of setting the tone here after the Padres’s have fallen behind 72. Great at bat gets to 3-2. Gray tries to run that sinker from outside to the inside to the outside corner and it catches too much plate. Oppo taco for Totty. 7-3 ball game. There you go. So now a four-run deficit. Lisa Rise gets hit. He’s already got an RBI double and a run scored. And the left-hand batter swings and misses at a first pitch fast ball. Strike one. Just for a visual, Sunny Gray tried to do the Michael King pitch to the right-hander. Started on that left-handed box outside and run it back over the outside corner and it just ran back over the plate too much. Way high to arise. One and one. Now remember, Sunonny Gray coming off one of the worst starts of his entire career. His last four starts have all been bad. His RA has gone from 336 to 404 in the last four starts. So what’s in his mind right now? Pitch outside 2-1. I think you’re maybe on easy streak getting the kind of run support you haven’t often gotten this season. But Fernando changing the mindset with that long home run the other way to lead off here in the third inning. 402 ft by the way into the bullpen. Two on to a rise is a fast ball on the outside edge. That’s a called strike. two and two. So, the Padres is going to have to turn back the clock here tonight and pretend like it’s April. Whis used the timeout now. He gets back in the box. Gray staring into his catcher, Pah. Now the 2-2 and Arise takes way high ball three. Another 3-2 count. Totty got the 3-2 homer to right center. Now the very next batter, Arise, gets to the same count. We’ll see what he does here. 3-2. Here comes the payoff pitch and Arise hits it the other way, but foul on a line. Probably ball four, but also almost a double. That is the beauty of Luis Rice. That is his superpower. He better than anyone else in this league can go outside the zone and find Barrel. We’ll do it again here. 3-2. loves to shoot it the other way. Left fielder Berles as always shallow against him. 3-2 hit the other way into left field and a base hit. Berles a long way to go to get it into the gap. He can’t. It rolls underneath of him. Scott has to pick it up on the warning track and a rise into second with his second double of the night. That’s the one way it can backfire on the left fielder. I I watched my dad do that for years. Berles playing him in and shallow towards the line as we often see, but Arise beats him into that that left center field gap. Berles just couldn’t get to it. I was just about to say it. That was the whole point of bringing it up. And and you have to add in that Berles is not the quickest guy in the world. So, if it’s not hit where they think it’s going to be hit, he’s going to be in trouble. Here comes the lumber brought to you by Dixie Line Lumber and Home Centers. Fix it, build it, enjoy it. Here’s Machado and Manny takes a fast ball near the outside corner for a called strike. Nothing and one starting to spread the baseball around. He doubled the right field down the right field line to first this time left center field gap setting up Machado with a runner in scoring position. Manny hits it hard but fouled on the ground at third base in an 02 hole. Machado struck out back in the first inning. He’s 0 for one but a lot of success in his career against Sunny Gray. 32 at bats against him and a 344 average with two homers and two doubles. Rise at second. Still nobody out here in the third inning. Padres’s down 7 to three. And the pitch to Manny hit in the air to right center field. Tailing away from Scott. He’s on the move. He looks up. It’s going to go. Two-run homer the other way for Manny Machado. Padres’s have answered right back. And this is a two-run game. This is the exact response you wanted to see from this ball club and it was all going to start with the type of at bats. Totty set the tone in this inning with the 3-2 homer. Arise does a 32 double and now down in the count 02 again. Sunny Gray tries to run that sinker on the outside corner. He does a better job. This was just elite hitting by Manny Machado. Opposite field shot cuts the lead to two. Now Jackson Merrill still nobody out in the third. First pitch swinging a sharp grounder foul right side. I got to tell you that is when you realize this is the big leagues. You make a mistake, you pay for it. Then you make a pitch that you know should get you an out and it still goes out out of the ballpark. That is the fun from a Padre perspective of having guys like Fernando and Manny in the lineup. Swinging a miss and two to Maryland. Jackson an RBI single back in the first inning. Paul is jumping on a warm night in St. Louis. Teams have already combined for four homers and four doubles as the Padres’s bat with nobody out in the third inning. 75 St. Louis. Buckle up. 0 and2 to Merrill. Gray delivers and Jackson hits it sharply off the mound out to shortstop. Wind has it behind the bag and throws him out one away, but that was not softly struck by Jackson. Maryland and the elusive first down here in the top of the third for Sunny Gray. Yeah, they’re set up on Jackson playing them right behind the back. I don’t know that we’ve seen a ton of teams do that, but otherwise that’s a hit if they’re not stationed where they are. But fortunately for Sunny Gray, they get the out. I think he said it right. Did he get Xavier? I think he said Xander. Yeah. Okay. He got it right this time. I think he got it right. Yeah. I think they they noticed their mistake. First pitch, swinging a miss by Bogarts. If you weren’t with us earlier, they had been introducing Xander as Xavier earlier tonight because it was typed out that way on the lineup sheet that they handed out, but I’m pretty sure the guy just said Xander. Fun while it lasted. Xavier struck out anyway. So, fresh start pitch here at the knees and 0 and2. Xander’s the one that’s been hot, so get Xavier out of here. Yeah, that was no good. Padres’s with two home runs this inning after the Cardinals had two homers last inning. And Bogart’s waves and misses strike three. So he strikes out the second time. Two down for Gavin Sheets. Boy, having Tatisa Rise and Machado all have the kind of success they had to begin this inning after falling behind 72 just huge. Put you back in range and game was a little bit out of hand until Padre is able to respond with three of their own. First pitch to Gavin is high. Ball one. Crew Chief Alfonso Marquez calling balls in strikes tonight. Clint is the first base umpire. Lance Barrett up at second and Tom Hanahan the minor league fill in is the third base umpire. You see a lot of these guys the next four days pitch is a curveball strike and now one and one to sheets. Sunny Gay’s home erra this year 2.84 and the Padres’s five runs on six hits against him as they bat in the top of the third inning. Here’s the one and one. Sheet swings lines it into right center field. That’s down and a base hit. Walker over to get it, holding him to a single, but the fourth hit of the inning for the Padres’s. Two out knock for Gavin Sheets. And that’ll bring Croninworth to the plate. Padres’s continue to put good swings on Sunny Gray. It’s a change up. It’s elevated. It’s off the plate, but because it’s up, it gives Gavin a chance to line this ball in the right center. Going to have a mound visit for the Cardinals here as Sunny Gray has hit some rough waters in the top of the third inning. Visit to the mound brought to you by The Window Depot, offering the best prices and biggest inventory on in stock vinyl windows and interior and exterior doors. Order online or find a location near you at the window.com. Told you the start. Sunny Gray coming off one of the worst starts of his career. Gave up a couple of runs in the first inning, but then had his team give him a fiveun lead. And here he is in the third, giving back three runs and really putting himself and his team in a difficult position. On the road trip that again we told you for the Cardinals was a really disaster. Their starters had an erra of 10. Their relievers were great, but it didn’t matter. It was all too late. Pitch to Cronorth after the mound visit. His cued foul and strike one. This is Sunny Gray, their best starter. So, the Padres’s taking it to him here as they try to close the gap. Still searching for two more runs. Tying run at the plate. Gray delivers and Cronorth grounds it to second base. Should be the inning. Donovan has got it. And a throw from about halfway between first and second is in time to retire this side. But the Padres’s get three more runs including two homers. And we will go to the bottom of the third inning in St. Louis with the Cardinals ahead 7 to five. And now here’s what’s happening at Valley View Casino and Hotel. Now that baseball sees to see all this excitement around what I love to do growing up. It’s crazy. What’s your favorite thing about this whole event so far? The the fusion of sports, entertainment, and cards because to me, cards have always been entertainment, and they’re getting their just dessert now. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. What is it that that kind of got you hooked as a foodie, so to speak? My dad was really into food when I was a kid. He traveled for work and he would go to places all over Europe and stuff. He was in sales and feel like he would come home and and try and cook the things he ate overseas. And so as a kid I was exposed to a lot of like stuff that kids aren’t usually exposed to. And so I credit my dad for that trip. Our DJ keeps the party going. And when you got to go, did I mention our new banos? Come join us at Baja Rick’s Cantina in the gas. Limited to the first 40,000 fans in attendance when the Padres’s host the New York Mets this Tuesday at 640. Visit padres.com/giveaways. Bottom of the third inning. Already a wild night in St. Louis. The Cardinals have the lead, but the Padres’s have the momentum. 75 St. Louis. U Darbish has been given some new life thanks to his offense. see if he can settle in here with Mason Win leading off. Walker and Pahes to follow. 67 and eight against Darvish. And his first pitch of the inning is a wellexecuted slider right on the outside corner for a strike. Nothing in one. Look, I think there’s a lot of game left. This is where you’d like to see a zero thrown up from a psychological point more than anything. No balls and a strike to win. Darvage delivers and out in front he swings and taps it. Foul at the plate. strike two. So bottom three, the Trustin will score. The Cardinals seven and the Padres’s five. Seven hits aside already. And if you’re a Padre fan, you know they haven’t been hitting like this lately. Well, neither have the Cardinals, but it’s been that kind of night so far. 0 and2 Darvish deals and win fouls it straight back on a line. Cal remains nothing at two. Meanwhile, we got action. Jeff Passid of ESPN is reporting the first what I would call big trade trade deadline time period here. Josh Naylor is reportedly on his way from the Diamondbacks to the Mariners. Here’s the 0 and2 check swing pitch a little bit down. ball one guess gets a little closer to his native country and can go that’s a good pickup for for the Mariners. Yeah, it’s a it feels like a really good fight. One, two, fouled the other way. I mean to go along with Cal Raleigh, you put him in front or behind. That’s a that’s a nice move there for the Mariners. I guess odds were either Jerry Dotto or AJ Prowler was going to be involved in the first big deal of the week leading up to the deadline. One and two to Mason Win and that’s line to right field. Fernando had him played perfectly. Backs up a couple of steps and makes the catch one away. Been a lot of conversation revolving around Jerry Dotto and him finally making the type of move that I think a Josh Naylor move does for him. seemingly making a lot of moves kind of outside of the Azerania trade that he made. Been a lot more of kind of on the margins type deals. There’s no doubt. And I think, you know, if I were a GM, and of course I never will be, but we all think that way, right? Right. Well, here’s Jordan Walker. He takes a run. If you’re getting a year like Cal Raleigh is getting, can’t capitalize. Got to go. Yep. For sure. Got to go all out. You’re having a legit MVP, maybe history making kind of season out of your best player. Swinging a ballet tip at the plate. Strike two. Knowing when to strike is is as much a part of the job as striking when it comes to the GM. They’re six games behind the Astros in the West. That’s certainly not insurmountable. They’re picking the wild card thing in the American League. And yeah, Cal Raleigh is doing something historic. You got the pitching staff. I know it’s been banged up at times this year, but this is the time to put pedal to metal. Yeah, it’d be tough to poo poo that that trade. Yeah. One out, nobody on in the bottom of the third inning. Darvish ahead 0 and2 on Walker and used pitch swung on and missed. Strength three. Second K of the day for Darish. Two down in the bottom of the third. Who’s hot, who’s not? Brought to you by the grilling store at Hillrest Ace Hardware, the official grilling store of the Padres’s Radio Network. All your grilling needs, visit them on University Avenue or the grilling store sd.com. Who’s hot? Jesse and Tony. And we got weather, too. Uh, also show Otani, Dave tells us. Apparently, he’s homered in five straight. I hadn’t heard. It’s hard not to. takes a strike, ties a Dodger record. I mean, I don’t get caught up in the Otani craze, but he did hit Durant who’s throwing 102 opposite field the other day. Not a normal human thing to do. No. One to PZ and a swing and a miss. All right, so he’s hot. Not hot. the Royal rookie outfielder Jack Kagle Leone who we saw at BCO uh 106 average in his last 23 games and he’s hitting 148 on the year. This is the the big leagues is hard. It’s very very hard. They keep telling us an opportunity for his first 123 inning of the night. Oh, and two on Pah the number eight hitter U deals and the pitch is taken a little bit low and outside Paul one. I mean, look, doesn’t mean Jack Kagle can’t be an all-star next. Absolutely not. Yeah. So, please, let’s give my man some grace. Let him figure it out. I think he’ll be fine. On two strengths and pot has lines and fouls. I mean, look at Kyle Towers who we just saw in Miami. He had those kinds of numbers last year when he came over. I know we look at Jackson. That’s that’s not reiterated. It’s not the norm. Yeah. Yeah, what Merryill did last year. As a matter of fact, he’s in a probably a small percentage of rookies that come in and have that kind of year on the position player side. Saw Fernando do it, too. I mean, it’s unspeakably difficult. Aldonado going to go out and chat with Darbish here prior to the one-two pitch. Aldonado seems very convicted about whatever they’re talking about. I and I think Garve was indicating he was going to call the pitch and he went out there anyway. Wanted to make sure they were on the same page. Cardinals got six runs last inning on a pair of two out three-run homers. And now you trying to go one, two, three in the bottom of the third. Cardinals lead by two. A ball in two strikes. Here’s the pitch. Bah swings. Lines it foul again. [Music] Dave Marcus has passed along a note. It says, “Can you please say hi to big Padre fan from San Diego who stopped by earlier on a tour? Susie Smith. I guess you and I were not here.” Hi, Susie. Hello. One and two. And a swing and a miss. Spun him around with a slow curveball and a one two three third for you Darvish with a couple of Ks. Good work Susie. We’re under the fourth inning in St. Louis. Cardinals seven. Padres. Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Hey, lunch Monday through Saturday. Dinner 7 days a week and a spectacular Sunday brunch buffet before the game, date night, or just because. Make it valley high. Book at Valley High restaurant.com. Locally loved, tropically inspired. That’s Valley High. Top of the fourth inning at Butch Stadium in St. Louis. The trust and will score is the Cardinals seven and the Padres’s five. Probably doesn’t feel to the Cardinals like they’ve got a two-run lead. Padres’s are in control of this game as much as you can be when you’re down two runs. Rice Johnson will lead off. Maldonado and Tatis to follow. Rice a switch hitter batting left-handed. And Sunny Gay’s first pitch curveball misses high 1 and0. It has been a bonanza of early offense here tonight for a couple of teams that have not been hitting this way. Here’s the one and0 and Johnson cracks it foul on the ground right side. Cat is even at a ball in his strength. See if the pods can stack a couple innings in a row of of some runs. Two in the first, three in the third. 891 here as we end the enter the fourth. One-1 pitch coming and Johnson takes a fast ball strike. And again, if you kind of think back to early in the year where the Padres’s were with some regularity coming back in games like this and we always said like this is the hard part that they’ve already done. You made it feel like a normal game and now you’re down by two. No big deal. Pitch is on the outside corner at the knee. Strike three call. Wellplaced breaking ball by Sunny Greg strikes out Bryce Johnson for his fourth K of the night. One away and Maldonado coming up. Good back door sweeper there. Johnson gives up on it. Didn’t agree with the call, but it looked to be a good pitch. Bottom of the zone, out of third for the punching. Top of the fourth brought to you by Genesis Home Improvements. San Diego’s trusted painting, roofing, and window company. Aldonado swung first pitch, his last at bat. He takes a breaking ball here and a strike nothing and one. Martine of course has hit four home runs this season. They have all come on the first pitch of an atbat. So, you know, that’s what he was thinking when he would eventually pop out in the second inning. 0 and one and another good slider for a strike. Quickly 0 and2 on Mald Donado who’s on a little bit of a heater here. He’s hitting four straight and he has doubled in each of his last three games. So, running his little tail off in Miami. Diaz caught yesterday. Martine back there tonight working with Darmish. The 02 and Maldonado takes another breaking ball. This time apparently low. It was close and the count is one and two. 75 Cardinals. One out. Nobody on top of the fourth inning. And that was good, better, best on those breaking balls. Didn’t get the call on the 02 pitch. Maldonado swings, rips this one into left field and a base hit. Sunonny Gray not happy. And Martine Maldonado now is hit in five straight games. A one-out single here in the fourth inning. Tying run is going to come to the plate for the Padres’s. And it is Fernando Tatis Jr. who is already homered and singled and scored twice here tonight. Sunny Gray threw his best three sweeper sliders. And then he hung to fourth after seemingly making a good pitch 02. Maldonado singles on the one-two pitch in the left field. So, Fernando is in. Gray working out of the stretch. First pitch taken and that slider is low. One ball and no strikes. I don’t know if I’ve seen Toddy do this very often, but he is tracking the ball all the way to the glove on his takes. Well, Donado obviously a short lead pitch to Fernando is a good sharp curve and a called strike one and one. And that’s just a small thing, but sometimes we take for granted seeing the baseball. And so those little exercises, tracking it all the way, kind of reinstall those things that we take for granted, specifically seeing the baseball. 1-1 check swing, but a cold strike on the inside corner. One and two. Cardinals with a seven to five lead. Padres’s have a runner on first, one out in the top of the fourth inning. Now the one and two. That’s a chopper over the mound. It’ll be fielded by the second baseman, Donovan. Long throw to first. Not in time. Donovan and Win both went for it. And so nobody was able to cover second base where maybe they would have had a shot to force Maldonado. No chance to get Fernando who sniffed the infield hit. Tatis is now three for three and the Padres’s have two guys on with one out for Luis Arise. Yeah, it was interesting. The balls hit closer to Donovan, but Wayne would have had to go a longer way to get to second base. So, was kind of hitting that no man’s land in the infield. And Toddy picks up the infield single. Ray will wheel around and watch Maldonado back to the bag at second. So, the Padres’s have the makings of something here in this fourth inning. Arise already two for two with a pair of doubles. First pitch coming and Luis takes low. Ball one. Not a lot of history between Arise and Sunny Gray prior to tonight. He’d been two for six against him with a double. So he’s kind of continued there. Four for eight, four doubles now in his career against Sunny Gray as the lefty Steven Matz starts to warm up in the Cardinal bullpen. Statue take and a high strike to even it up. One and one. Big opportunity here for the Pods. Tatis with all world speed at first. Aldonado without all world speed in front of them at second base. 0 and one the pitch and rise reaches for it. Chops it to second base. Donovan has it. Flips to second. That’s one. No time to turn two as they force the middle runner. So Tatis is out at second base. A rise aboard on a fieldielder’s choice. Aldonado rumbled over to third. And now men on the corners. Two outs and Manny Machado coming up. I mean, it was kind of funny. Wayne got that ball and spun around cuz he knew he had no play at first to see if Maldonado had rounded third. Maldonado hadn’t even gotten to third yet. It’ll be first and third for Manny Machado. Here comes the lumber brought to you by Dixie Line Lumber and Home Centers. Fix it, build it, enjoy it. Yeah, it’s a different look for you. Manny had a two-run homer last inning. swings and misses at a first pitch sweeper here. Strike one. So Machado his 19th home run of the year. He is now driven in 63. Rise at first. Maldonado at third. Two outs. Padres’s down 7 to five in the fourth inning. Here’s the 0 and one. Manny takes. That’s in the dirt. Blocked by PZ. And it’s even one and one. That’s the pitch there that he’s gotten Manny to chase. got burned when he tried to run that sinker back over the outside part of the plate, but he has had some success with the sweeper. That time though, Manny lays off, moves the count to 1-1. Gray stares in now. He comes set and ready. Ball into strike to count. Here’s the pitch on the way. Manny swings, pops it up, shallow right. Walker in and towards the line. Still coming and just in fair territory. He makes the catch to end the inning. No runs, couple of hints. Padres’s leave a math in quarters after 3 and 1/2 in. Heat. Heat. [Music] Here [Music] [Music] we are, Arlington, Texas. This is the Graham Slam Burger. So, two patties, brisket, caramelized onion, American cheese, ranch aioli or ranch mayo, if you will. Padres’s had a 2 nothing lead. Cardinals had a 72 lead. And as Tony said now 75 St. Louis bottom of the fourth inning. Darvish had a one two three third. He’ll try and pick up where he left off against Scott Donovan and Herrera. 91 and two. Victor Scott II drew a walk in the second inning and that was kind of the lynch pin moment of that inning. It was a two-out walk to the nine hitter. So often he end up paying for that very next guy. Brendan Donovan hit a three-run homer, then a single, a double, and another three-run homer. That one by Contreras. First pitch, the left-handed batter and Scott takes a little bit low. Ball one. Darvis wanted that call from Alonso Marquez, but he did not get it. Pitch looked good. Either way, it’s one and0. Scott eating 230 on the year. Five homers, 33 runs batted in. And the 10 pitch swung on and missed. So the cat is even and a ball and a strike against the Cardinal center fielder. Was his walk with two outs and unlocked that second inning for the Cardinals. Never know what it’s going to be, but sometimes you can kind of feel it. Here’s the one and one. And Scott tracks that curve ball all the way down and in. Two balls in a string. Scott made his major league debut last year. Played in 53 big league games. Made his major league debut as the starting center fielder on opening day. Here’s the two-1 pitch. And that is inside. And pretty wild, but he was the first Cardinal to pull that off since 1957. Wow. Bobby Smith, last Cardinal to make his major league debut as the starting center fielder on opening day. Three and one. The pitch to Scott is swung on and fouled back. We’ll pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Padres’s Radio Network. KWFN and KWFN HD1 San Diego. Hey, what’s up? This is Nick Paveta. You’re listening to Padres’s Baseball on the Padres’s Radio Network. An Odyssey Sports Station. Cardinals 7, Padres’s five in the bottom of the fourth inning. Three and two to the speedy Victor Scott. I second. Darvish delivers and a ground ball foul right side with Tony Gwyn Jr. and our producer engineer Dave Marcus. I’m Jesse Agler. A warm humid evening in St. Louis, Missouri. 93° at first pitch. He’s come down a couple of ticks since then. Three and two again to Scott. This will be the seventh pitch of the atbat from Darvish. And the slow breaking ball little bit outside ball court. So a two out walk to Scott in the second inning caused trouble. Now it’s a leadoff walk to Scott in the fourth inning. Certainly a dangerous man to put on the base pass. He’s got 25 bags on the season. Near the top of the National League in that stolen base department. Both mom and dad ran track at Morris Brown College in Atlanta. So there you go. Yeah, it’s not accidental. There he goes. First pitch running. It’s low. Maldonado’s throw is good and the tag not in time. He stole that with straight speed. The only throw. Good tag. The only hope was that he slid off the bag from sliding too late, but he’s able to hook the bag with his feet there as Bogart’s able to keep the tag on, but he never came off. Now 26 bags on the season. As fast as advertised. So runner on second, nobody out. Brendan Donovan, by the way, the batter didn’t even get a chance to say that. And the left-handed hitter, who’s had a big night already, is up one and0. The pitch. Ground ball second base. That’ll move the runner. Ronorth collects it. And the throw to first is in time. Nothing they love in St. Louis. More than a productive. Scott at third. One down. And Ivoner coming up. It’s a fundamental ball there. Hardy with a two-run lead. You can add to it. puts a little more pressure on the Padres’s as Yuki Matsui continues to get loose in the Padres’s pin, but Padres’s will bring the infield in except for Manny Machado. Right-handed hitting Herrera and the first pitch is golfed on the line into center field base hit. That’ll score Scott easily. RBI single for Herrera and the Cardinals reextend their lead. It’s 8 to five. Whether it’s the leadoff variety or a no out variety, walks at this level tend to come back to bite you. And I mean the crushing thing for Darbish, right? Those are the only two walks of the night. Y it’s not like his command has been worn off and he’s walking the yard. I mean it’s just twice to Victor Scott. So Herrera at first, one down for the left-handed hitting left fielder Berles. Dangerous guy at the dish. 85 Cardinals here in the bottom of the fourth inning. And Maldonado going to go out talk to Darvish. This might be a stall tactic. U is now at 69 pitches. Yeah, this is definitely a stall tactic. certainly wasn’t called out there by you and Maldi certainly not going to go out there in this situation unless he’s trying to stall. He not as a matter of fact Mald is not even conversating. It is Manny and the infielders. Further kind of evidence that this is a stall tactic to give Yuki some more time out there. Manny, they had a great shot on TV. He’s kind of standing on the third base side of the mound. and he just sort of with the eyes peeked to his right waiting to see how long it’s on the nightlight umpire. Alonso Marquez got out there and as soon as Marquez got about halfway they broke up the meeting. That’s also how you know Alfonso Marquez is a veteran umpire. He definitely could have gone out there way earlier than he did but he knew what the gig was up. All right, so mound visit over. Herrera at first one out. Verison waiting and a throw to first base. Herrera goes back head first. three for three stealing bags here in 2025. And now Mike Shield will come out. So one last stall there with that throw to first base and I guess Yuki just needed a little bit of extra time to get a couple of more pitches in. So Shill going to make a pitching change. Go lefty to lefty here against Berles. Is already doubled tonight and Udarish has a bumpy one in his fourth start of 2025. pitch exchange with the runner on first, one out in the fourth inning. First pitch on the way. Berles takes in the dirt and kicks away from Maldonado. Rolls back towards the mound and a wild pitch will allow allow Verra to take second base and erase any shot at a ground ball double play. [Music] I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a ball in the dirt get that close to the mound before on a ricochet. Caught him I think on the knee that hard plastic the shingard and just shot forward. One and0 the pitch from Matsui. Runner goes. It’s a strike throw to third. Attack from Manny in time. Herrera thought he had it all timed up and decided to make an aggressive push for third base. And Martine Maldonado throws about two away. And if you’re going to take an a shot there, that’s probably the chance you take. He had a running start, but he stopped. And that’s what ends up costing him as they’re able to get the throw and tag down from his knees. Maldonado for out number two. Great throw by Maldonado and a brilliant tag by Manning. Just no time to waste there. So two outs and the count is one and one on Berles. Matsui kicks and deals in a ground ball underneath Matsui’s glove, but it rolls out to Xander on the outfield grass behind second. And a long throw to first is in time to end the inning. Cardinals get a run on a hit and after four in Heat. Heat. [Music] It’s a fiveman umpiring crew here today and this young superstar. And did their feet get tangled up? Yes. So Hoppy trip. So many times this year we have sat next to one another and talked about oh another one of these games when it was two to one. Pitch here hit sharply up the middle into center and a base hit. Second knock of the day for Jackson Merrill. Tonight has been a very very different kind of game. A bird of a different feather if you will. 18 hits now between the two teams after Merryill’s lead single in the fifth inning. And kind of fun to have one that looks a little bit different. We aren’t used to seeing these type of games. We talked about earlier in the game about how many one-run games the Padres’s have played in. And this could very well end up the same way, but on a different flavor. A little more runs scored, a little more hits. Yeah. I mean, most of them have looked like the last couple of days. Three to two, four to three. Nothing like this. Here’s Xander for two with a couple of strikeouts. Swings at the first pitch, sends it in the air to deep right field. Walker is back in front of the wall, jumps, and he can’t make the catch. It hits the fence, rolls back towards the infield. Merryill is going to be held at third and Xander into second with a double. So, the Padres’s are right back in business here in the top of the fifth inning. Second and third, nobody out, down by three. I tell you what, great swing by Bogey first of all. doubles off the right field wall. But you saw some little confusion here with Merrill and Leap. And that goes back to Miami the other day when Merryill kind of ran through the stop sign. Leap was a little bit indecisive of whether he wanted to hold him. And you got to know that that’s probably in the back of his head. I think Merrill was the one that ends up putting the brakes on there. First pitch to sheets outside and it was the right decision. No, I mean when you saw where the ball came in, Jackson would have had some trouble scoring there even if he had been full speed all the way, but you’re right. It was a very late stop sign. One and Otis Sheets second and third. Nobody out. Tying run at the plate. Gavin rips it foul right side. Tell you what, if Mason Win doesn’t have the elite arm that he has, Sheets has himself an infield single. wind had to come from the outfield grass virtually on the second hop and then a bullet to get sheets, but the Padres’s do pick up a run. No, you’re right. He’s got arguably the best arm of any shorts stop in the game. He’s one of those guys that’s looking to be the cut and relay guy. Croninorth takes a high strike. So Bulgart’s now at third base, one out. Audrey’s out hitting the Cardinals 118 and it’s only the fifth inning. Who are these guys? One pitch, swung on and missed. I don’t know. I like them though. No, it’s very enjoyable. Very nice change of pace and I know it probably sounds weird that we’re this excitable with the team down by two, but this one has had a totally different feel from Jump Street and it’s been a lot of fun. Lotteryy’s going to have to win this one in a way they have not won a lot of games the last couple of months and they certainly appear capable. Runner on third, one out. Ow and two to Croninworth. Gray delivers and Jake swings and misses at a breaking ball in the dirt. That is strike three. Fifth strike out of the night for Sunonny Gray. And now two down for the switchhitting Bryce Johnson. See if the Padres’s can finish their plate. Second and third. No outs to start this inning. They get the one run. Can they get the second one in? Cardinals eight, Padres’s six. Bogarts at third. Two down. Top of the fifth inning. Johnson batting left-handed looking for his first hit of the night. And he takes a breaking ball. Strike nothing at one. Rice making his ninth start of the season. His fifth in left field. Sheets getting a DH day today for the first time since July 9th. has been very intentional about using that DH as of late. Here’s the 0 and one. Johnson swings, hits it off the handle to the right side. Contrarus way off at first, has it, feeds the pitcher Gray. It goes off his glove. Bogarts comes in to score. Johnson is safe and it’s a one-run game. That’s on Gray. I think Contraras got to it and then he did the right thing. He’s took his time to make the throw. They’re going to give Contras the error, but this is certainly a throw that Gray, I would say, expects to handle. He looked down right as that ball was getting to his glove to touch first base, and that caused him to drop it. The throw was a little bit behind, but nonetheless, the Padres’s get the run. Pitching coach Dusty Blake of the Cardinals is out to visit with Greg. Blake’s got to be the biggest pitching coach in the major leagues. He’s up there for sure. Fire’s pretty pretty big as well. Yeah, [Music] we should uh check with all our our colleagues around the league, figure out who the biggest pitch pitch coach is. Yeah, good project for tomorrow morning. Well, we see all of them. You know, we probably should take a a test ourselves. We’ll have Dave look it up. Riley O’Brien is warming in the Cardinal bullpen as Gray’s Knight is obviously nearing the end. Whether it’s here in the fifth or not, time will tell. Martine Maldonado might be the deciding factor. He gets in here with the speedy Johnson at first. Two outs and a ball in the dirt, one and0. Cardinal lead is 8 to7. Padres’s have not led since they got two in the top of the first and the Cardinals answered with only one in the bottom half. Johnson three for three stealing bases not going and the 10 pitch is on the outside corner called strike one and one inning began with a single by Merryill a double by Bogarts had second and third nobody out both guys came in to score to first Johnson back without a tag from Contraras so they did I think it’s fair to say what they needed to do here in this fifth inning And that’s kind of been the theme of this game. Padres’s so far have generally done what they’ve needed to do offensively. Here’s the one and one. Maldonado takes low and outside. Ball two. Martine won out of two with a single. And I would almost guarantee that if Sunny Gray does not retire him, his night will be over. 87 St. Louis in the fifth. 19 hits between the two teams. Here’s the two in one. Maldonado hits it hard on the ground, but right to Aronado. He’ll take his time with it and the throw to first is in. Plenty of time to get Maldonado. That ends the top of the fifth inning. Padres’s get a couple of runs on two hits. There was an error and Johnson [Music] Heat. Heat. fight. Yeah. Heat. Heat. We have not really had a game like this it feels like all year and it’s been very entertaining, very weird and uh only halfway through. So, who knows what the rest of the night has in store for us. teams have combined for 15 runs, 19 hits. Arnold’s committed an error in the top of the inning that allowed an unearned run to score. And now the guy who committed that error, Wilson Contrarus, will lead off. Big night already for the former Cub. RBI double in the first inning and then a three-run homer in the second. That made it 7 to2 St. Louis. It is now 8-7. Matsui, who got the final out last inning, begins this inning. And his first pitch to Contraras, is in the dirt outside. One ball and no strikes. Both Tatis and Machado have homerred tonight. That’s always a good thing for the Padres. 25 times now. It has happened since they have been here together. And the Padres’s 21-3 all time when they both homer the same game. What a pitch way outside. Two balls and no strikes to cont. Obviously a long way to go here tonight. Aronado on deck. Mason win to follow. So it is the teeth of the batting order here for the Cardinals. And a little bit bumpy as of late for Yuki. We’ll see how it goes. 20 pitch. Swinging a miss. Today’s question of the day brought to you by Kaiser Permanente. If you have questions about your health, visit kp.org/ San Diego. Kaiser Permanente for all that is you. Question comes from a bit north of here, Jennifer in Chicago. two and one to Contreras is in the dirt ball three. Jennifer asks, “In a blowout game, what are your biggest challenges as announcers?” Let’s start here. We have had so few blowouts in 2025 that when it happened the other day in Washington, the Sunday game, Padres’s won by 8 to1. It was totally unfamiliar feeling to me. Typically, we’re in a good spot because of my man next to me and all his 3-1 is at the top of the zone, but call the ball and a lead off walk here in the fifth inning. Love to have gotten that call there. Hono Marquez didn’t agree. Lead off walk to Contra. Usually we’re in good spot because of all the research you have on different things. But I would say uh keeping your ADHD at bay is when when the game gets out of hand. That’s the toughest part. No doubt about it. First pitched Aronado swung on and missed strike one. You know, I got my little, you know, file of stuff and you always have a couple of things scribbled down if a game is going to get out of hand. But again, this year there have been so few games that have been blowouts either way, wins or losses. And on Sunday afternoon in DC, I think it was a couple of innings before my brain kind of like realized what was happening because as we have said almost every single night, hey, look, another close one. The first is low and a good job by Arise to make sure it didn’t get away. And we have another close one here tonight, but of a very different variety. 87 Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth inning. Could very well look back at the end of the night tonight and say this was the first time all year the Padres’s have played a game like this. See how it goes the rest of the way. Runner on first, nobody out. Oh, and one to Aronado. Matsui is always milking the clock and the pitch just kind of served out into right field. The base hit. So a tough start to the inning for Yuki. A walk to Contreras now. Base hit for Aronado. Did a great job of not trying to do too much. First and second, nobody out for Mason Win. And remember, Darvish only walked two guys. Both came back to hurt him. And now lead off walk here in this fifth inning. And we’ll have to Yuki’s going to have to buckle down here. try to get some empty outs [Music] as Mason Win comes to the plate. Padres’s have pretty much responded in every inning that the Cardinals have been able to score, but it’d be nice to get another zero up here. Win is 0 for two on the night. That was all against Darish Matsu. His first pitch to him is a slider outside ball one. Oh, called it a strike. All right, we’ll take it. Looked to be a good couple of baseballs off the plate. No doubt. And they all even out. Nothing and one to Mason and win. And this time, same spot, but called the ball one and one. The interesting part was the previous pitch was a slider, so it it started further. Yeah, I tell you what, it it seems almost certain there will be ABS challenges next year. There are going to be games where you see an awful lot of them and it’s going to be a tough one. One and on to Mason win way high ball two. That’s my prediction. I think it’ll be a net positive. If I was the commissioner, I would not do it, but I’m not the commissioner. And I understand why people like it. I understand why they want it. And I’m all about technology and change. I’m good with things generally, but there going to be some games next year that are going to be really hard to watch, I think, because of ABS challenges. Two and one is low ball three. And he continues to put himself in a tough spot. Fallen behind 3-1. Had the lead off walk first and second. Still no outs here in the fifth. Thanks to Jennifer in Chicago for our question of the day. Remember to submit yours. You can go to 973thefansd.com/quest. 87 Cardinals with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the fifth inning. They are looking for more after the Padres’s got two in the top. Here’s the three and one to Mason Win. Swinging a man. Scott loose on a fast ball could not connect and the count is full. Three and two. Probably ball four there. tried to take advantage of his 3-1 count, but not necessarily a pitch he could do the type of damage he was looking to do. So, it moves to 3-2. Aronado at first. Contrarus hit second. The ball hit in the air to deep right center field. Fernando into the gap. Going to get there. He’ll make the catch. Runners trying to tag in advance and it’ll be cut by Bogart’s keeping Aronado at first base. But Peter does go to third and now one away. Runners on the corners and it’ll be Jordan Walker. Padres’s I hadn’t seen that particular cut before, but Bogey set up at third, but Cone was at second base. And so although the throw seemed to be high at initially, Bogey was able to cut it off and keep Aronado at first base. That could be big here if Matsui is able to get a ground ball off the bat of Jordan Walker. One for two with a single and a run scored so far. All right, Otto at first. Contraras at third, one out. Cardinals by a run. Matsui delivers and Walker takes load outside. One and0 [Music] behind. He been ahead of Aronado in this inning. One ball in no strength the pitch. Walker takes again low and outside. Two and0. Matsumi staring in like he wanted that call, but the pitch was not particularly close. No. Who’s on deck for the Padres’s in the six is brought to you by Timberch decking and railing. Everything wood should be visit timbertch.com for the Padres’s. It’s the top of the lineup. Tatis Arise Machado coming up in the fifth or excuse me the sixth. Two to Walker. The pitch is downstairs and smothered in the dirt by Maldonado. Ball three. [Music] All the more reason why you would love to get a zero up in this inning. Got the top of the lineup coming up. You’ve cut the lead to one, but Matsoule struggling through this fifth behind three 0 to Jordan Walker. Aronado leads at first base. Contraras at third now. The three-0 pitch to Walker on the way. And he’s taking all the way. It’s a strike near the outside edge. He thought it was ball four. It certainly was not. And the count now three and one. Here’s the pitch to Fernando. Swings and loops it into shallow right. Walker in and towards the line will get there to make the catch. Two down. Time for our next game preview, but a reminder, the party starts before the game on the coaster train. Join the winning team. Buy your coaster train tickets to Padre games and score big at go nctd.com/padres. Game two of this 4game series coming up tomorrow, a little bit earlier, 4:15 Pacific time. Nick Pavetto will be on the mound against former Padre Miles Michaels. Base is empty. Two outs for Lua Rise. He’s had a big night. Two for three. And he takes on the outside corner. Strike one. RBI double and a run scored in the first. Doubled and scored in the third. He drew a walk his last time. If he reaches here, Manny Machado would come to bat as the potential tying run. One pitch hit hard on the ground, but right at the shorts stop Mason win. He’s got it. And a perfect throw to first base and a 1 2 3 eighth inning for Phil Mtop after seven and a half. It’s still the Cardinals nine in the Padres’s seven on the Padre. Biggest thing we’re bringing is a random Tony Gwyn drop I did with his estate. So we just signed a deal at the realist.com to actually go through his entire archives and present them and auction them off. to announce it. We did this limited edition 1994 the loss season card cuz you know between August of 93 and May of 95 Tony win batted 406 and 162 games. So in the back we have the stats of what could have been [Music] [Music] And you’re just too stylish to have superstition. Zero. Zero. I can’t do it. Too many collar cleat, too many gloves, too many gloves, too many pads. I do put on my right glove first, then the left, then the thumb guard, then I put on my leg guard, my elbow guard. Anything you put on first? Nah, not really. No, I like to say I’m not super stitious, but a little stious. [Music] [Music] Trusted painting, roofing, and window company using energy efficient and warrantybacked products. Visit genesis home improvements sd.com. Genesis home improvements. A new beginning for your home. Bottom of the eighth inning as will score. The Cardinals nine and the Padres’s seven. Pahes Scott Donovan. 8 n and one coming up for St. Louis against the new Padre pitcher left-hander Kyle Hart coming on to try and keep this thing right where it is at. Hart went two innings in yesterday’s loss in Miami. He threw 24 pitches and now making appearances in back-to- back games. Remember he began the year in the rotation. He’s looked terrific in his time out of the bullpen so far. First pitch to Pah who’s 0 for three, swung on and miss. Slow curveball strike one takes over for Estrada who had a perfect seventh inning with a strikeout. Pitching change brought to you by Sids Carpetbart. Sids Carpetbart stands alone as San Diego’s floor covering leader. From a huge selection of premium high-end choices to quality budget friendly options, Sids has you covered. Oh, the dirt. One and one. Pay struck out each of his last two times up. Hard. The tall skinny left-hander delivers and the 1-1 pitch is a check swing grounder foul back behind home plate and the countdown one and two on the Cardinal catcher. Vah is 26 years old, born in Venezuela with a high school in Miami and then played his college baseball in Florida, Atlantic in Boca Raton, FAU. San Diego State beat him in the final four in basketball a couple years ago. Nice job. One, two, cracks down third base. I couldn’t really hear what you were saying because of the So I thought you might have been asking me what this mascot was. 30,601 in the building, but the sound system is set up as if there were 60 60 or 70,000. You’re exactly right. One, two, hits it hard right to Machado at third base. Wrong guy. Manny’s got it. And a perfect throw to first is in time. One out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stay tuned. The Hamul Casino Resort postgame show with Sam is coming up immediately following the game. Victor Scott II is fittingly the second guy to bat this inning. Lefty to lefty shows bun, pulls back and takes low ball one. Scott officially 0 for one. He grounded out to a rise in the fifth inning. Walked each of his first two times up. Came in to score both times. Those were the only two walks Darvish allowed and they were huge. Here’s a liner over Cronorth into right center. Fernando going to try and cut it off in the gap. He does with a slide and that’ll hold him to a single. What a play by Fernando. If that gets past him, you can almost guarantee Victor Scott II is standing on third. Yeah, that’s a guarantee. Great decision to leave his feet to cut this ball off. He got to it so quick. I mean, even with the speed of Scott, he couldn’t get to second base. Yeah. I mean, if that guy isn’t willing to test Fernando, nobody should. Art the left-handed pitcher looking right at him. Not running. Comes home. Donovan fouls the first pitch. Back strike one. Donovan Knight got off to a great start. Singleton scored in the first. Hit a three-run homer in the second, but he has grounded to Croninworth each of his last two times up. He grounds to Croninorth here. It could be an inning ending double play. 01 pitch and Donovan takes strike right on the outside corner. Bottom of the zone. 0 and2. Tell you what, if Scott continues to hone his swing like that, be a dude who’s challenging for batting titles often with his speed. A lot of infield hits in there. Oh, and two. The pitch. Donovan loops it over Cronin Worth into right field. A base hit. Stop will advance one station. Backto back one out singles against Hart here. And now first and second for Ivon Herrera had a huge height including a home run in his last at bat. They bring Kyle Hart to face the two lefties. And those are the two batters that have gotten hits. Line drive hits one to right center for Scott. This one almost in a similar spot. Dumps it in front of Totty. First and second now for Herrera who’s already exit stage left once in this ball game. By the way, nobody throwing in the Padre bullpen. This is, “Hey Kyle, we need three outs. Go and get them any way you can.” Donovan at first. Scott with elite speed at second. One out for Herrera. Our couple looks back at Scott now the pitch and a fast ball up one and0. talk about batto ball skills and speed and kind of being able to manage all those things. We heard a great trivia question the other day one and O to Herrera and he takes down and in. There has only been one guy in Major League history to play all 162 games for his team and not ground into a single double play. It’s only happened once. And see, obviously you think about, all right, a guy who had good bat control, but also good wheels. It’s a great trivia question. 20 down the middle and a call to strike. It took me a while, but eventually came around to it. It’s a very good question and it was a lot of fun kind of figuring it out. We won’t tell you guys the answer. You have to figure it out on your own, but you know. Wow, that’s cool. Two and one to Herrera who will now back out and call for time. Were you planning on giving the answer? I I thought so. We answer that the main thing to do. Yeah, I guess so. It was Craig Vio. Here you go. I might have strung it along another couple pitches just to keep people, you know, like in the drive. You made me feel bad at that point. So, it’s a great great trivia question from our friend Jim Mchugh. Two-1 pitch and Herrera takes low ball three. Jim, one of the advanced guys from the Padres’s doing a lot of video work and many other things. First and second, one out. Bottom of the eighth. Cardinals up 97. Kyle Hart desperately trying to keep it there. Padres’s will have Machado Merryill and Bogarts in the ninth inning. And now Hart has stepped off and been charged with a disengagement. Brian Hley, the Cardinal closer, is up and throwing. Three and one. The pitch is taken low. Ball four. So Kyle Hart has put himself into a little bit of a predicament here in this bottom of the eighth inning. The bases are loaded. There’s only one out. Alec Berles is coming up. [Music] And obviously a big inning here would drastically change the complexion of this game. Man, I think it’s important to note that the landing spots for Kyle in yesterday’s ball game a lot different than what he’s being asked to do here in the eighth. One- runun ball game. Excuse me, two-run ball game. Trying to keep it there. Brought on to face the two lefties. surreners a couple of knocks. So now the bases are loaded as Alec Burles comes to the plate. Lefty on lefty matchup here. Obviously if you’re Kyle Hart, you are hoping for the ground ball right at somebody. Working backto back days for what has to be, I think, the first time in his career. Starter, he hadn’t thrown out of the bullpin very much. So it’s all kind of a new experience. overall for Kyle Hart. There is something to that. There really is. But this is the job and the assignment right now is to somehow leave them loaded. Erles gets into the left-handed batters box. Sacks are full. One out. 9-7 Cardinals in the eighth. And first pitch is a little low. Ball one. Looked good. Didn’t get the call. Euron one out of four with a double and a run scored. Both teams have been hitting the ball all over the yard tonight, but it’s the Cardinals ahead in the bottom of the eighth inning. One and0. The pitch is outside. Two balls, no strikes. Here at first, Donovan at second, Scott at third. One out here in the bottom of the eighth. Two the pitch. Burles swings, grounds it to first base. Arise has it, fires to second. One. Bogarts to first is in time. And a double play to end the inning. Little 363 to get out of trouble in the eighth. And we’ll head to the ninth inning in St. Louis. Last chance to dance coming up. Pacado Maryland Bogarts with the Cardinals ahead 97 on the Padres’s radio network. This summer is all about beach days. And if you want to say young 735 and six, I’ve got an extra five. And then it says has worked as a TV commentator, you know, and I did start back in 1978. I did the Yankees and the Red Sox playing in the one game playoff and ABC said if the Yankees win, Reggie will play and then you’ll go broadcast with Howard Coell and Keith Jackson. And that’s how I started my broadcast. And that’s the Bucky Den home run. So every time I see Bucky Den, I go, “Thank you for making me a broadcaster [Music] and use code Padres for 15% off plus shipping sitewide.” That’s symbiotica.com code padres for 15% off. Top of the ninth inning in St. Louis. The trust in will score as the Cardinals nine in the Padres’s seven. Kyle Hart got himself out of a bases loaded jam when Alec Burles grounded into a 363 double play to end the eighth. And now the former Rocky and other things Garrett Hamson replaces Berles in left field. Machado, Merryill, and Bogarts coming up against the excellent twotime all-star closer Ryan Helley, who has not been quite as good this year as he was last year. First pitch, Manny takes in the dirt ball one. That was the curveball. You’ll see a lot of tripledigit heat from this guy most nights. In 2024, he led all of Major League Baseball with 49 saves and he had a 204 ERA. But it has been again not quite that good here in 2025. 10 pitch. Machado takes in the dirt outside. Two balls in no strikes. The RA a very respectable 3.18, but he’s 19 out of 24 in the save department this year. He has been hit much harder in 2025 than he was in 2024. Now he’s gone 2-0 to Manning. Pitch on the way and Machado takes a fast ball strike at 99. Chad in his career against Helsley, by the way, three for six with a home run. Two and one to Manny. Helley delivers and it’s fouled straight back. Two and two. One of those at bats, by the way, came in that wildcard series at Petco back in 2020. Ellley debuted with the Cardinals under Mike Chilton in 2019. Here’s the 2-2. Manny swings, rips it into left field in a base hit. Leadoff single here in the top of the ninth inning. And with nobody out, the Padres’s will bring the tying run to the plate. It’s exactly how you want to start the inning off. Annie Machado picks up his third knock of the night. A bullet through the left side gets things rolling here in the ninth. Cool 109 off the bat for Machado. So it’ll be Jackson Merrill. Boy, if you could be forced to define the second half of last season by one thing, it might be late inning heroics by Jackson Merrill. Let’s see about 2025. First pitch, swinging a miss. Good slider coming into the left-handed batter and the count is nothing and one. Jackson an RBI single in the first. He singled and scored in the fifth. Two for four in the night as he cleans up here tonight for the first time since mid June. Pitch on the way. Merryill battles it back. And the count now 0 and2. Arrow’s two for four on the night. Down 02 here. Have to battle. Got one opportunity to see Helley as a rookie last year and Helley struck him out. Ellie relieves Mton who had a very easy one two 38 eighth inning. Oh and two to Merrell the pitch. Jackson swings and misses strike three. Higher tried to check but he went around and that’s out number one here in the top of the ninth inning. Jackson just trying to do too much there. Uber aggressive and Ellley uses that against him as he punches him with the high eater. Round number one, 101 miles an hour. Now Bogarts one out of four with a double in a run scored. Padres’s down by two in the ninth inning. Pitch to Xander is the slider strike nothing in one. 97 St. Louis Padres’s out hitting the Cardinals 13-2. This game was wild from jump street. But the Padres’s down to their final two outs. Two of the tying run at the plate. One pitch. Bogart sends it in the air to straight away right field. Walker backs up a couple of steps. Now he comes in one to make the catch. Two down at the top of the ninth and Gavin Sheets will come with the Padres’s down to their final out. A power verse power matchup. Cardinals led by as much as 7-2. Padre’s got to 87. The Herrera homer in the sixth made it 9-7. And that’s where we are in the top of the ninth inning. They will let Machado run as the first baseman Compares backs up to play behind him. First pitch to Sheets outside. Manny takes second base. Sheets one out of four with a single. Also an RBI ground out in the fifth inning. Tying run at the plate. Two outs in the ninth. Here’s the one. Sheets swings and misses. That was a backup slider that kind of faded away like a change up would. That’s what I thought it was initially. Backup slider moves the count to 1-1. Ellley comes set. Pitch on the way. sheet swings and misses and another slider. Strike two. That time he got it to move the way he wanted to in the middle of the plate but diving below the zone. Count now one two down to their final strike. Tying run at the dish. Two outs here in the ninth inning. Helley deals, sheets, takes, and another slider. This time it’s low. Cat is even. Two and two. [Music] Game one of four here in St. Louis has been wild. 30,000 plus on their feet at Bush. Here’s the 22 swing and he just got a piece to foul it off behind home plate. Another slider that’s backing up way off the plate. As a left-handed hitter, that’s got to be tough, right? Cuz you’re expecting it to come down and in. And then all of a sudden, it’s floating away. You see it’s spinning like it wants to come back towards you, but it’s going the other way. That’s how you get a lot of guys looking at that backup slider because it’s moving away and it’s your eyes and brain are just not computing it. Two and two. The pitch sheet swings and misses at a ball in the dirt picked up by he’ll tag him out. That is strike three in the end of the ball game. So Helley works the scoreless ninth and a wild night at Bush comes to a close with the Cardinals ahead 97. We’ll take a break, come back, give you some final thoughts and the totals on the Padres’s radio network.
