Canadiens Prospect LJ Mooney Talks About Habs Fans, Lane Hutson And A Hot Start At WJSS
All right, LJ. Uh, you didn’t have much time off, but it looked like you had no time off out there. It seemed like, uh, things were clicking pretty good for you today. Yeah, it’s good to be back on the ice playing with everyone and getting in that game shape uh, before the season starts. So, it’s pretty fun. I mean, it’s been kind of a busy month for you. Obviously, the draft, you go to Canadians training camp or development camp. I mean, what was that what’s this month been like for you kind of preparing for this? Yeah, you got to love it. Like, just all the things uh building up to this, the draft, the camps, so much fun. And then coming here is obviously so fun to see all the guys and getting a couple games in and playing the international games are so fun. So, had you been on campus much yet? Uh you know, is this or you know, obviously this is where you’re going to be, so it’s kind of a a cool experience. I mean, what what have you been up to? Uh getting used to your surroundings here. Yeah, I haven’t been up here this summer yet. So, uh it’s good to be up here. Uh, I think I’m going to stay a couple days after the camp and everything and just see it all around here. It’s good to be back and I can’t wait to get the season started here. Yeah, people can’t see it on the video, but we’re interviewing you in Maruchi Arena, so you’ll be on this ice. Next time you will, you’ll be wearing the Gopher uniform. Um, you know, what’s that experience been like? Just obviously I think the hometown crowd is behind you here as well. Yeah, I love it. The fans are awesome here. I I can’t be more excited to get started here. Um, how many games I mean did you ever get a chance to see Logan play here or did you you know did you come see a game and experience something here before? I never have uh got to see a game here. I uh he was at Penn State played there so I got to watch him there. That was the only time. But yeah, I I wasn’t lucky enough to see him play here at all, but I wish I would. Yeah, it’ll be a little bit louder next time you’re here. So, um you know, I think Canadians fans are are you’ve got a crazy fan base here in Minnesota. Canadians fans are a different breed. I think you made a lot of people really excited with how you played at development camp and then they saw a couple highlights here. Um, what’s it been like kind of uh being under the spotlight of being a Montreal Canadians draft pick? Yeah, I couldn’t be more happy about that. Uh, they give so much support. They’re awesome, the fan base there. So, I was so lucky to be drafted by them and just have them behind me. So, it’s awesome. Um, you know, you’ll be here with with Cole Hudson, but obviously Lane Hudson uh is is a fan favorite now with Montreal. similar, you know, a guy that’s been doubted because of his size, you know, how much inspiration do you take from that? And obviously the Canadians believed in him and now they believe in you. So, what’s that kind of say about where things are with them and you? Yeah, I mean, obviously he’s unbelievable. I watched him play at NTDP a little bit. Uh, just seeing the moves he would pull off there and then he didn’t change at all throughout the years at college. He lit it up here and then it’s doing unreal in the NHL. So, getting to watch him throughout the years has been pretty unbelievable. and then being drafted by the same team and uh I think he was doubted so having people doubt me also I think it’s like pretty cool to have that guy. Yeah, obviously good inspiration. The other thing head coach of team USA for the world juniors is going to be your head coach here at Minnesota, Bob Matskow. What kind of impression are you trying to leave him with for both the world juniors and for your freshman season here? Yeah, I think just show them that uh I’m here to compete, work hard every day, every time I come to the rink, just stuff like that. Bring positive attitude. uh just be a good teammate and yeah, get to work. Then uh last thing, you know, what are those last steps going to be for you the rest of what do you have planned for the rest of the summer? You’re going to spend a couple extra days here, but then just a couple couple weeks back home and then it’s right back at it, isn’t it? Yeah. Uh just try to get in the gym after this a little bit more and uh just keep building up towards the season to start. I think that’s all you can do now with uh only little time left in the summer. So yeah, just keep building up towards the start of the season. Thank you.
LJ Mooney had two points in his first game at the World Junior Summer Showcase. Afterwards, he talked about his crazy summer, being picked by the Montreal Canadiens, taking inspiration from Lane Hutson, catching Habs’ fans attention and looks ahead to his freshman season at Minnesota.
