NFLN’s Cynthia Frelund weighs in on expectations for Broncos, evaluates Nix & Denver’s top FAs
here with NFL Network. Cynthia Freeland at Broncos training camp. We know things are just getting started, but how excited are you for how this team can take a jump this season. This team looks amazing, especially I was here last season as well, and there were so many question marks surrounding Bon Knicks. Now, we don’t even talk about him anymore because it’s just a foregone conclusion that he’s going to kind of continue with what we saw last season, building on his success. But, I don’t know, they look like they’re having fun. Some of the free agent acquisitions are being like silly. I mean, Evan Ingram saved me from getting hit in the face with the football, which is always much appreciated. I’m not going to catch it. I I don’t have that those good late hands. I don’t have those. So, everyone looks like easy. There’s like a nice relaxed feeling. And last season, it was a little bit more tense. So, I think that is a really good sign for things to come. You talked about those key acquisitions in the offseason. How do you see them developing under Shawn Payeyton? Well, Sean does one thing that exceptionally well that I’ve learned the most from him probably more than any other coach is he knows what he wants. He identifies the prototype, the dynamic. He’s like, I want XYZ. I want them to do ABC. All these things are upside. This is the downside I’m not willing to live with. And he keeps that prototype. So, I think any of these people who have come in, they fulfill a need that he explicitly wants. They fulfill something that he’s planning on doing. And that is a way to have success because if you know how the pieces fit together, the puzzle comes together a lot easier. The Broncos made the playoffs last year and with this division being as competitive as it is, what are you looking forward to the most, especially as Bon Knicks enters year two? I mean, every time you have a quarterback in his second season, everyone’s like, “Uhoh, sophomore slump.” I actually think that Bo Nicks was kind of trained in this way where, you know, they he started off with the easier throws and then he went with the harder throws and then he went with the exceptionally hard throws and then he threw into traffic to like, you know, Marvin M, whatever. Like all these things happen sort of in a nice progression. So, when you have this defense and you have these free agents and you have probably an improved running game because I think that’s a focus for Shawn this off seasonason, I think you’re going to get a chance for him to minimize any sophomore slump and maximize the opportunity to overcome that sophomore slump quickly. You’re going to get a pretty good look at it cuz we’re going to see you on the sideline. How fun is it to be part of these preseason broadcasts? It’s amazing. The preseason is one of my well number one I get to hang out with you which is always so much fun but number two you get a chance to really like live and breathe what it’s like to be a part of the team. You get to see you know conversations like everyone’s a they’re playing a little looser. You know the guys who know they’re going to make the team they already know they’re going to make the team but 53 is the number on the roster. So you get to see you know kind of the guys on the back end fight for who wants to be there, who embodies being a Bronco the most. And not only is that inspirational for me cuz like I’d be one of those like very last minute acquisitions to anything that that just that that resonates with me, but it’s nice to see heart and soul and remember what this is all about. It’s a game. It’s a sport. It’s fun. It’s teammates. It’s working together. And it teaches us a lot of other life lessons. And you really get to see that in preseason. Well, we can’t wait to see you on the sideline. We appreciate you spending back together Saturday with us again. Broncos country. This is NFL Network’s Cynthia Freeland.
