Film Breakdown: Mike Hilton is an Absolute DAWG | Miami Dolphins

We’re back people and today we’re going to film on Miami Dolphins newest corner Mike Hilton. Dolphins bring him in from the Bengals free agent. In my opinion, the best corner that was available uh out of those guys. He is a one-year stop gap type of player being 31 years old. And the reason, you know, I I think, you know, I wasn’t talking about him as much, but I think with the potential Ker Kohu injury, we don’t know how serious it is. Uh they wanted to bring in Hilton, who is a nickel only player. Uh the other options were more outside guys, but I think Hilton was, you know, he was one of the league’s elite nickel corners for many years. I still think he’s pretty good. Like he has elite run defense, very good verse screens. Still does some good things in coverage. You know, more of a I think better in zone. You know, when he has help over the top and man, he does a really good job anticipating. Just a very smart player. Just an absolute dog, too. Uh he’s also one of the better blitzing nickels in the league. And the Dolphins do like to bring their nickel and blitz at it. Last year with Ramsay a lot. I think Weaver will like to do that with Hilton. He’s a very effective blitzer here. Just constantly beating blocks. And he’s he’s a smaller guy. Doesn’t have great long speed. That’s why he plays in the nickel. But man, he is tough as nails, great balance, beats blocks consistently, has just a lot of good reps. Very, very fun to watch him play run defense. Uh like it’s like top tier run defense for a nickel and very big fan. I I I and honestly out of the secondary right now, the corner specifically, he’s probably the guy that I think is the most reliable out of the bunch, like added to that group. I have a lot more faith in him than most of the other guys that would be brought in. I mean, even more faith than Jack Jones. And I still think he has a decent amount in the tank and he has that energy that you want added to your defense. So, I’m a big fan of the player. And I do believe like the Dolphins either should have signed no corners or signed multiple because I feel like if you’re gonna sign one, it just didn’t make enough of a difference to the room. But I think signing multiple can change the whole outlook of the room and make more of an immediate impact. Well, then if you sign none, it’s at least allows you to have uh the young guys play and you could see what you have out of that group. But I think signing multiple shows that they’re they’re committed to being better this year. But like watch this out of Hilton. Very smart player. Look at him creep up to the line of scrimmage, run through, beat the receiver, trying to crack back him to the point of attack, identify the mesh point here. What’s going on, bend underneath it? He works through contact super well and just has such a good feel and makes so many tackles near the line to gain. Very consistent tackler. Those type of explosive plays are all over the field. Like all these plays I think are from last year except I think one of the interceptions I show the interception I think is from two years ago. But yeah, every all these other plays are him just making plays in the back field. use him as a as a run blitzer. He gets to the point of attack so fast. Like excellent plays, great field near the line. Just he’s like your typical smaller, feistier corner and uh he’s a guy that could help break a soft label for a team cuz he plays with a lot of a lot of toughness. Here’s another example. Beats AJ Brown. Good recognition skills on screens. Uh knows what the Eagles like to do with their RPO game. Sees what’s going on. Peaks back through. sees Herz pull it uh feel it underneath to slip this block and then tackle Devonte Smith right as he catches the ball. It’s just it’s all over the tape. That’s what he’s really good at. Communicating pre- snap with his team. This is a fourth and two situation. Understand situations and like breaking on stuff what they’re trying to do. And he’s working through this bunch. The Giants are kind of bunched up. The tight end kind of works up into his leverage, but he sees through it to 17 sitting on the line to gain. knows that he’s going to stick that foot in the ground. If they throw it deep, they has help over the top and then sink. Boom. Make a play, knock that ball down. Very intelligent, smart football player. Love that about his game. Gets downhill. Really good click and close for a player like you see him click and close. Just constantly beating receivers to the point of attack. Like they’re not expecting it. Like Jacobe Meyer is actually a very good blocking receiver and he just is a little too far to the outside. Hilton’s going to make you take uh take advantage of that, make you pay every single time. It’s just constant over and over again here. And he can he he not only beats blocks with with uh with quickness and intelligence, he’ll take you on too. Like he’ll square you up, he’ll use his hands and then he’ll defeat the block, just deconstruct it and make the tackle at the line of gain or behind line of scrimmage constantly gets involved in run support. Really good run support might show like here he fakes the run blitz. You can see the receiver points him out, drops back into coverage. The Giants run a draw play. He’s still then able to get back up, beat the receiver from blocking him. uh break down, square up, finish with his tackle. He’s a very consistent tackler. Really fun to watch him go to work in that area. Uh here’s him coming off the edge again, taking advantage because when you’re nickel sometimes, you know, getting downhill, you’re not always a part of the blocking scheme and with what they’re trying to pick up or they’re trying to get up to you at the second level. So, they’re not always ready and prepared. When you’re able to fly downhill like this and make these tackles in the back field, Hilton is actually dominant there. Here’s another example of it. Beating Meyers to the point of attack, slipping underneath these blocks, just perfection, man. One of my favorite things to watch about his game involved in run fits. And you have to be able to be involved in run fits to, you know, look at him get into this B gap right here as a nickel to do that. So, hopefully Kater Koh is healthy. If Kater’s healthy, like I actually think the the corner group is much improved with Hilton in the slot. Kater would have to play outside, which is fine. He definitely showed a lot of improvement outside last year. I still think Kater’s better than nickel, but he did at least play better outside um and is better than most of your options. And then if Jack Jones doesn’t have any off-field issues, I think he’s probably, you know, the next best guy as well and at least gives you, I think, more talent on the outside. And then the younger guys are kind of fighting for depth roles and can maybe see playing time at different points of the season. But Hilton is probably your best corner uh of the bunch like at least yeah short term like Zl trying to to block him and no he’s going to shove you off like it’s nothing and make the tackle at the line uh on Derrick Henry. Here’s another example. Look at him beat the block from the receiver get around. Uh this is like a combination of everything. one recognition skills identifies what’s going on the the toss play beat the receiver work through the contact really good like contact balance then the quickness to get to the outside before the tackle can get to him slip underneath it and then make the tackle just really really good stuff here we get to some cover stuff uh I think when he has to play manto man down the field he can get into some struggles I think more so when he can you know play with anticipation playing a trail he has a really really good job here lad routes him up but he did respond after this lad had got him a couple times early in this game. I wanted to show that. But then he did respond with some other good reps against Lad who’s a very good receiver. Great job anticipating this route break. Boom. Sink those hips. Play through. He’s got good ball skills on ball productions there when ball’s thrown his way. Here’s another rep one-on-one with Manki. He has some help over the top and he knows like, “Hey, I got help over the top. I can plan more this trail, get hands on, and then feel the route break. Get ready to anticipate cuz I know I have the help directly over the top of me and he’s ready to break on it. Almost comes away with the interception knocking that ball down. Here he is finding the wheel route. Good job. Understands the situation based on his positioning where the ball probably wants to go. He’s high up field shoulder. Turn back into the receiver to locate the ball. Go up. Attack at its highest point. Make a play. Just man, Hilton’s film is really really solid. Not a lot to complain about. Very good blitzer here. is like kind of delayed blitzing around on Lamar. Actually has had some good success pressuring Lamar here. They kind of throw it away. It does get completed, but I think they end up tackling him for like a negative six yard gain. But like Hilton is going to get on you. He’s got the the quickness and closing speed. Loves to like look at him just feel this. This receiver motions across. He gets, you know, now he’s going to be a part of this uh run scheme with this receiver working across the field. And now he just takes it as an opportunity to blitz and tackles the QB before he can even hand it off. It’s actually insane and gets like a negative like sixyard play for for that. Hilton just constantly getting involved, taking advantage, great recognition skills, sees Maki work across the line, identifies the play really fast, great identification, and then takes a great angle to the mesh point to meet the running back right away. So, he has no chance to like get away from you and it’s just constantly with Hilton. Uh, he sees it kind of, you know, identify, see the the pulling lineman. He’s looking at it, looking into the back field, key the lineman. He sees the Polers now. He knows the play’s probably going to go come across this way. Able to sneak past the receivers, understands the angle, and meets Polar. Like just it’s beautiful watching him play run defense. His run defense is elite for sure. And he’s still a a good coverage player. He’s not elite in coverage, but he’s still good in coverage. And he is a nickel. Like he is will be your starting nickel whether Kater is hurt or not. He will be your starting nickel. and Kater will play on the outside. Um, and I’m excited to see him get to work because I would say after Minka, he’s definitely your most accomplished DB and I still think has enough left in the tank to make a nice impact for this year cuz at least looking at his his 2024 film, it’s not like he fell off a cliff or anything like he was still pretty good. U so I I don’t expect to see him fall off either and think he’ll be a pretty good fit for what Weaver likes to do. So usually like commiss.

  1. Hard nose run defending corner βœ…
    Ball Hawk zone corner βœ…
Basically the same philosophy as the line backer room, get guys who are very good at there own thing

  2. Ryder, LUV this signing. Cheap, Veteran/Veteran Leadership and if anyone would know Mike Hilton's play, it's coach Weaver, since he seen him play twice a season (for a couple seasons) when Coach was with the Ravens. Even as a depth move, this is solid. If Hilton can play SS in a pinch, even better. Ryder, is this also a "help change the identity of the Dolphiins (Defense) as well? Hilton's Toughness?

  3. No more missed tackle in secondary. We go play with attitude on defense. If our Defense can get Tua ball back consistently we will beat anyone. Even holding teams to fgs instead of TDs

  4. Ryder, I like this "being patient and see what is out there" approach, before the Fins just try to "knee jerk" reaction and trade for a player (like the Miami Media and a lot of fans keep pushing for). Let these young guys develop, look to add guys who have something to prove (Jack Jones) and adding a Veteran (Hilton) to help mentor and still has something in the tank to contribute.
This secondary could be really a really treat to watch, if say:
    1) Jack Jones as CB 1 (keeps showing what he is going in practice)
    2) If Kader injury is not serious and able to play, CB 2
    3) Mike Hilton locking down the slot CB spot
    4) Minkah being the leader at FS
    5) If McMorris can continue what he showed with maybe taking the next step at SS.
(TWO Veterans who can really "quarterback" that secondary in Minkah and Hilton!!)
All the rest cast, Duck, Smith, Marshall, I Johson, BJ Adams, etc, adding young hungry depth. I know, it's a lot of "if's" and that is how sports is. This is a foundation year. Fins Up!

  5. Dolphins DB Depth

    CB Jones / C Smith
CB Kader / Storm Duck / Boyer
    NB Hilton / Marshall
    FS MINCA / Trader
    SS Melifongwu/ David

Kader was being groomed to play CB this offseason

About getting our best DB’s on field same time .

If Kader hurt we have to sign another CB
    Fuller is out there z

The day before we found out MINCA was coming we had the worst DB room in the NFL

Now we are middle . πŸ†πŸ’ͺπŸ™

  6. All these big media organizations that have been poo pooing the dolphins gonna be eating their words when this seasons over I think the dolphins will be competitive

  7. Hilton seems to be the type player whom would do well against Buffalo and what they like to do on offense. Like that he's a 'Football Player' first with a πŸ‘ƒ for the ball.

  8. Give credit to the coaching staff. They have improved our team so much with the last 2 signings. I didn't want us to get the other 2 that have been hurt so much. I can't remember their names. Got 3 dbs for the price of ?? We'll see. Great breakdown Ryder, as usual.
