MLB LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics – Jul 27, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about ready to go and towing the slab, Colton Gordon. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, he’s been giving up a lot of hard contact this season. I mean, coming in, guys are hitting comfortably in the high 200s. So many times there’s some bad luck, but then also there’s just a little miss here or a little miss there that changes the outcome of the at bat. We’ll see if he can be consistent and make adjustments quickly in this one. Next offering is fouled back. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. They had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. [Applause] Next up, it’s the first year shortstop, Jacob Wilson. And that one fouled off. One out. Base is empty. [Music] Fought off. Foul. [Music] That’s off the mark and a count one and two. This hitter’s been seeing good velocity in the atbat. He’s kind of set up for that change up. He hasn’t seen it yet. Looks just like a fast ball out of the hand. On the ground to third. Throw is high and over his head around first and hustling for second. And he’ll reach second with one away. Batting third, first baseman number 16. Sometimes early errors can be just as costly as errors made late in the ball game, but you just don’t know it at the time. Second batter of the game gets on base for free, bringing up the number three hitter. So, we’ll see if they can take advantage right here. So up next, Nick Curts. Really strong hitting performance recently, hitting better than 350 this month. First pitch, just misses. Wilson leads off second with one gone in the inning. Let’s go st [Applause] on that fast ball. One ball, two strikes. swings through and for the K. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. So, the go ahead run in scoring position. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. That’s a ball in the dirt. Two outs and one in scoring position. Let’s go. Colton swings and misses. And the count even at one. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. Going back onto the track and he makes the catch. One error in the inning, but nothing more. And now the Astros go to work for the first time. No score. [Applause] Back here with my pal Singi and today’s starting pitcher JT Gin. What do we need to know here? Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season. And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets, and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes, that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count, allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ball games. So, we’ll see if that remains true in this one. Cam Smith, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one, [Music] kicks and fires. Well, as a hitter, you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game. But if that’s how it’s going to be all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the offense. Swing and a miss. One and two. One ball, two strike. That one missed [Applause] in the dirt. Full count. Three and two. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Music] Now he breaks his back, reaching down, makes the catch. Now we check out the Astros lineup getting guys across the plate. Not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Boo it becomes extremely frustrating and then what happens is guys press especially in runcoring opportunities and situations. On top of that I mean you really make it harder on your pitcher. He feels like he’s got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game. So, they’ve got to figure out a way to relax, get those runners across when they have them on and especially when they’re in scoring position. The one and skips into D. Next offering is in for a strike. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. Two two down. [Music] Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, just missed. That one finds the corner and it’s two and one. Two outs. Base is empty. [Music] Right through there for a strike. And that is a good eye on a pitch down low. Ball three. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. 1 2 3 go. The Astros scoreless after one. Back here at Dyken Park. Second inning set to go. And the batter now Shay Langelers. Gordon back to work. Can’t glove it cleanly. Still fires to first and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Batting six left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. right down to shoot. That’s strike one. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. Cut out and miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Just overmatched on that fast right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. Makes the grab and that’s the inning. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here in Houston, we head to the bottom of the second. And now Diaz Diaz. First pitch. Not close. [Music] And that’s fouled off. The 1-1 is fouled off. fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Chaz McCormick up next for the Astros. McCormick. The other way. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two away. Batting six, second base. And stepping in for the Astros, Bryce Matthews. really bringing some thump at the plate lately. Three homers already in this series. That clips a corner. He swings and fouls one off. Second inning here. No score. That one just misses and the count is one and two. Stuck him out looking. Astros go down 1, two, three. We’ll move to the third with no score. Back here in Houston onto the third inning. And here is number 32 [Music] Gordon a 6’4 lefty 26 years old and he was drafted in the eighth round in 2021 on the ground right side Matthews leadoff man retired here in the third batting night second baseman Luis Urias Here’s Luis Oas. Pulls that one. Foul [Applause] [Music] out to center. Dubong makes the grab. Two-way down. Now batting the center. Here’s the center fielder. Lawrence Butler went down on strikes his first time through. There’s a strike. Top of the third. No score. Tap foul at the plate. just misses the mark outside the zone. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, go look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. And it remains two and two. flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. Walker, he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. And one, two, three go the A’s. And we are still scoreless. And we’re back for the bottom of the third. And now Mauricio Dubio Dub. First pitch and he just misses. Just missed. [Applause] [Music] And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. On the ground to the left and it stays fair around first, digging for two, throws to second and he’s going to get to second with nobody out. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So, digging in, Cooper Hmel right through there for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. [Music] cut out and miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Pretty much textbook pitching for the three pitch K right there. Jumped ahead 02 on two pitches he didn’t want to go after at the plate. Then knowing he’s going to be a little more aggressive trying to protect, he expands just out of the zone where he couldn’t do anything with it. He gets the strike out and keeps the pitches thrown to a minimum. Very nice. Now it’s Zack Short. And that is out of play. Dubone over at second. One down. Ground ball left side and foul ball. [Music] Next pitch misses. Now one and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. So backto back strikeouts now. And they still haven’t managed to do anything with the leadoff double. Yeah, Boo. And you just don’t want to get careless here. You’ve done a really good job to get two outs after that leadoff double as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it’s a non-issue. So the lineup flips over and now the right fielder Cam Smith first time up was a pop out. Well, squirts away a little bit. [Applause] Man on second, two down. Now one and one. And there’s a ball. Two balls, one strike. [Music] That one finds the zone. Two and two. Rudder at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. Swinging a miss. And he got him. Make it seven strikeouts for him. So they work around to lead off double. Three innings complete. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the top of the fourth. Now it’s the shortstop. Jacob Wilson. The MMO for him is contact. A guy who’s going to deliver average, not a ton of power. He’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere. Well, that’s why it’s a team. And when you look at a lineup, he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate. Waste no time there. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts struck out swinging his first time in there at the knees for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And now it’s even one and one. Ruer at first with no outs here. Swings through that one with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here in the air left field down the line. And that’s out of a foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. This one in the dirt. Tag save at second. And good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. Definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball, but it got away enough to erase any chance of that. Good job of moving up in the scoring position. Now a hit could make that wild pitch really sting. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Top half of inning number four. Three. [Music] Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. [Music] [Applause] [Music] man at second. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. create just a little bit of illusion at the end on the ground right side makes a sliding stop and very nicely done for the out as an infielder you have to be ready for anything in that spot it required going to the ground getting a little dirty and making a strong throw for the out great play so the go-ahead run in scoring position next is the designated hitter Brent Rooker scoreless here. But now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got to third. There for the out. Runner scores from third. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you’ve got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground, brought that run in. And now a chance for Shay Langalers. Grounded out his first time off. [Applause] Fast ball the inside corner for a strike. He’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point. [Music] [Applause] Ball that’s outside. just missed. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. A’s leading by a run. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball, but missed the spot. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. [Applause] Sodrom takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. That one called just inside I think and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though, but he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Can’t find it here. That’s six straight balls. Langeliers the runner at first with two gone. That clips the zone and it’s two and one. Now that fast ball, even though it’s up, that’s the velocity you want to go after. Low 90s a lot better than trying to hit the high 90s. That one fouled off. Two and two, [Music] [Applause] two outs. That one a little bit high. Full count now. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. So now two on and two outs. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast. First and second, two outs. And here is Miguel Anduhar. [Applause] Late swing fouled off. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. No, two packs and misses. It’s a strike out. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the A’s one and the Astros nothing. [Applause] Back here at Dyken Park, Jose Alt up to hit here. Third base, Jose Al. [Applause] First offering and it just misses. [Applause] And another ball right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. That one close rule the ball and it’s three and0. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] And a foul ball. making four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Oh, he’s been racking up the strikeouts. And what’s so impressive, not walking anyone. I mean, this guy’s just going right after hitters, filling up the strike zone. And it looks like hitters, they’re trying to think with him, but they just are a pitch behind. Dominating stuff out there on the mound. And now it’s Christian Walker. That’s in there. Strike one. One down. Base is empty. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Home team down a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That misses and that’s ball three. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. And a foul ball. Go out of the ground to third. And on Duhar tosses across the first. Already two gone here in the home fourth. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out in front. Rolled over on it. Exactly what it was supposed to do. Now the catcher up to hit. Yiner Diaz. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck that one back and it’s off the out of town scoreboard. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. He absolutely ripped that ball out front and almost got it out of here, man. Just a really strong balanced swing and a fraction of an inch different on the bat and it is finally out of here. Chaz McCorm up next for the Astros. 0 for one so far. That’s off the mark. Ball one. Ball one. No strike. [Applause] Runner at second. Two down. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Hard hit right side. Kurts steps on the bag and he has thrown four shutout innings. One left for Houston and it remains one- nothing back here in Houston. Now it’s the right fielder number 32 Gordon back to work. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. Strike. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. got the top of the ball a little bit but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. And now here is Luis Urias. Now snap throw to first and he’s back in safely. There’s a swing and a drive and it hops over the wall for an automatic double. And boy, do they catch a break. Otherwise, you’re looking at runners around the bases and probably a run that scores. So, the batting order turns over. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. Golden opportunity right here. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike, [Music] [Applause] swings and pulls a foul to the right side. But I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. And that is a big first out. Next up for the AS, Jacob Wilson, one for two. Fly ball to the outfield for a sack fly. Soft ground ball to the right side. Find a hole. He can attack this a few ways, but the one thing he can’t do is strike out. Spits the plate going. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as the bat expands. And that’s through there for a strike. Only two down. That one the other way now. Two away as they get a run across. Now batting number 16, Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Bowl for two in this one. [Applause] Ball one and a pitch inside. The A’s looking to add another. [Applause] That one ripped. This one’s got a chance. And that one is gone. A two-run shot. Home run number 20 on the year. And they add on. It’s 4 nothing. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Colton Gordon departs and he had a tough time keeping them in the ball game today. We’ll get a new arm when we come back. Now pitching. Hunter Brown on a pitch out of the pen here and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. [Applause] So two away with nobody on Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. And that’s in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. [Applause] swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. That misses the zone. Ball one. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Foul ball still a one and two count. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across and we’re in the top of the fifth. And he chases that one. And that is that. The A’s with a two-run blast. It’s now a four nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the second baseman Bryce Matthews. Hammered down the right side but fouled. off the mark there. One and one movement in the bullpen. JP Sears appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Lopez getting cranked up as well. Ball to strike the pitch. And that’s downstairs and outside. Fouls one off. Two and two. Swinging a miss. Struck him out. That’s his ninth strike out so far. Now batting. Here’s Mauricio Don. Doubled his first time. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Foul ball there. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Ball one there. That to right. Settles under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there are two down now. batting left fielder Cooper Hmel. Two out, space is empty. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Cooper Hmel. His first at bat was a strikeout. That one misses in the dirt. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. [Applause] Now batting shortstop Zack. And now the shorts stop Zack Short. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. [Applause] in there at the knees. One and one. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. Consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. Swang and a miss. And the count is 0 and two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Just off the inside corner and count one and two. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another Pummel off of first with two away. Come on. Now this is in the air down the line under it and makes the grab. That is the inning. So the Astros leave one. They trail it here 4 nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. For the A’s, catcher Langalers in his third season, 27 years old, and he was a third round pick back in 2019. Swinging a miss. No balls, two strikes. Activity in the bullpen. Nick Hernandez up and throwing or warming up as well. [Applause] That’s down and in. One ball, two strikes. The count upstairs. And now it’s filled up. [Music] That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken ball four. Tyler Soderstrom getting ready to hit. He is struck out and he is walked. That’s the third and that’s a fair ball. The throw into second and he’ll pull into second safely. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Just a simple ground ball the other way. Had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Next up for the A’s, Miguel Anduhar. [Applause] swaying at a ball popped in the air. Base hit. One run in already. Here comes the throw. It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s now a six-run lead. Right fielder. No outs. Runner at first. And now the right fielder right through there for a strike. Nobody out. Runner at first. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was late that time. Wow, that’s 89 on the gun and it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. dominating strike out there on just three pitches. And that’s what a good power pitcher can do to you. If he’s hitting his spots, filling up the strike zone, sometimes he bats over before it really begins. [Applause] In now takes ball one off the plate. line drive, tries to get back and save. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. [Applause] Check swing called strike. Oh, it’s a real nice cutter right there. I mean, this guy can struggle with the inside pitch at times. So, I’d say that’s pretty effective if you can continue to command it on that side of the plate. And Duhar off of first with two away. [Applause] One ball in the third but kept close. [Music] [Applause] fouls it back with two strikes [Applause] and it’s even up. Stays alive. Two outs. Goes down looking. They put two on the board with a couple of hits. No errors and one left. Top of the order. Do up in the home half of the six. It’s the A6 and the Astros nothing. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Number 50. He’s pitching on two days rest number 15. So the Houston lineup turns over. Here’s the Astros leadoff manith. Clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. [Applause] Strike on the outside and the count even one and one. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Line to left. Fair ball. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. First pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely. Christian. So a man aboard now Christian Walker. Breaking ball misses down and away. The one. Hey, I got one ball, one strike. swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can’t forget it. And they slice into the lead. It’s 62. That swing just injected more drama into this one. [Applause] He got his front foot down. He was strong on his backside. And when his bat went through the zone, there’s no question that ball was going to travel out of the ballpark. But that’s if you were putting the tape together positive to watch, that’s it right there. Just a perfect swing. Base is empty, one away. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Yiner Diaz. Swing in a liner. Base hit out into right center field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Close [Music] [Applause] one. Doesn’t get the call. And one and one. [Applause] That’s inside. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Still only one out here in the inning. [Applause] And that is in for a strike and out to a two. Two strikes. [Applause] Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. A massive home run. second home run of the inning for him as they cut into the deficit. It’s 6-4. Chris, we knew this moment was coming for him soon. Yep. And it finally came. We knew it was only a matter of time before he’s going to connect with one just like that. Just too good of a hitter at the plate. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden they’re back in this ball game. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Number 50 won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. [Applause] Here’s a new pitcher from the pen, JP Sears. and he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So, he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit per inning. JP Sears. One out, base is empty. Bryce Matthews up next for the Astros. [Applause] That one finds the zone. going on. Four runs already in the frame here in the bottom of the six. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That misses and it’s one and two. [Music] [Applause] And that’s outside. [Applause] Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. [Music] [Applause] And that’s down and away. [Applause] This to third on Duhar. Fires over to first and there are two outs. Now batting center fielder Mauricio Dubon. Mauricio Dubon up next for the Astros. And that one clips the corner. Oh, and one. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and that’ll get down for a hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now here is Cooper Hmel. Close but called a ball. That’s ball one. One and0. [Music] [Applause] Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Grabs it on the run and that’s the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 64 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Now pitching Caleb comes on now. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Jacob Wilson now at the plate. is short stop number five. And the first pitch misses for ball one. He was late there. Strike one. One ball, one strike. That’s a ball. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched it. Out to short. tosses to first and they get the lead off hitter in the seventh. Now back number 15. Now at the plate, Nick Curts can’t forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth. Yeah, one of the biggest swings of the game, Boo, as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here. And that’s through there for a strike. [Applause] Strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. pulled the string on the change up. Now batting two down, base is empty. Now the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Oh, this is just part for the course these days. Huge fast balls coming out of the bullpen. Fast for a strike. Battling here as he fouls it away. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strike out. And that is the inning. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the A6 and the Astros four. Now pitching for the on the mound now Justin Stur. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. And stepping in for the Astros, Zack Short, the short stop. Back short misses off the plate and that is ball one. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. I got a ball, one strike [Applause] the other way and it stays fair. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Stepping in Cam Smith outside low. Ball one. And that one missing low. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] [Music] tying run at the plate. And now it’s even up. [Applause] [Music] Swung on. belted and that one hops the wall. Short rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score. Big time at bat right there. Comes through and they’re back within a run. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. Really important bat coming up now. And the batter now, Jose Altuve. One for three in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] So, two balls and no strikes. [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] So the tying run at second and ball for Teal Board. definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk and that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. Catcher might want to go talk to him. Big spot late in this one. And here’s Christian Walker. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. and fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Settles under this one. Brings it in. Runner tags at second. Not in time. The time run stands at third with one out. And a fly ball could knock this one up. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Justin Sterner done for the afternoon and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this now pitching for the So they bring on the veteran number 49. No. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. And here’s the catcher, Yiner Diaz. Now, that this is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. Rudder takes off. Swinging a ground ball down the line and it’s fouled. [Music] Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. [Applause] [Music] Two on, one out. And ball one. [Applause] Right side. Squeezes it. Runner tagging from third. A big run scores on the sack fly. And this game is tied in the seventh. Well, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. And next is the designated hitter, Chaz McCormack. He’s already homerred in this game. [Music] And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. [Applause] That one off the mark. One ball, one strike. [Applause] That’s to third on Duhar. They take the force out and that will end the inning. But they score twice and even it up late. We look ahead to inning number eight and we’re all even at six apiece. Shay Langalers digs in now. He’s 0 for one. Back to work. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Astros have some action in their pen. Josh her the closer is getting loose. Susa also throwing [Applause] late swing. Fouled off. [Applause] Just missed. turned on, but that’s fouled down the third baseline. Two- two now. Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] And now the count filled up three and two. Tyler Soderstrom in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] He fouls it off. Will do it again. [Applause] chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. Pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast ball. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls. But because hitters get a swing pad that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Tied at six. Next up for the A’s, Miguel Anduhar. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. A’s looking to put the go-ahead run on base. And a popup right side foul territory. And that’ll do it. And the A’s are gone in order. Score remains tied six apiece. Now pitching for the Shawn Nukem into the game. Southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Bryce Matthews getting ready to hit 0 for three in this one. Bryce Matthews and that one fouled off. [Applause] And that misses. And now it’s even one and one. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. One ball, two straight [Music] [Applause] on the ground and it’s just fouled. That was close. [Applause] That misses and that’s ball two. [Applause] Swanging a ball line to center. Brings it in and there’s one down. Good piece of hitting right there. Nice hard line drive to the outfield. You’re trying to get on base. Represent that go ahead run. Can’t hang your head on that at all. Mauricio Dubon the next to hit. And that one fouled off. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Jacob Lopez up and loosening in the pen. Bases empty, one away here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. swings and lines a base hit into left field. That’s back to back singles for him. Really nice job staying inside with his hands to fight off that pitch. Man, that cover was bearing in on him, but he found a way to stay with his approach. Didn’t spin off it and he hit it pretty well. So now a pinch hitter, Victor Keratini. And this is a big at bat coming. Definitely a little added pressure on him here. [Applause] Check. Swing called strike. That’s strike one. [Applause] in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. Here goes the runner. Fouled off. He was late. [Applause] Now one missed. [Applause] Next pitch is outside on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, boo. And Nukem fires. So Walk puts runners at first and second. And with two outs, the go-ahead run is at second base. Here’s the short stop at the plate. Zack short [Applause] and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] There’s the strike. [Applause] [Applause] on the ground left side. Six four out three double play and the inning is over. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second base from the shortstop. Perfect turn and they’re out of this jam. Now pitching. So they turn to their closer Josh her. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Taylor Trto into the game now on defense, but in a strange way. This is not a position he’s used to playing as far as we know. Tied at six. Now it’s the right fielder. [Applause] [Applause] tapped in front of the plate and that one handled not in time. An infield knocked to start the inning. It was a healthy cut, but the same can’t be said for the contact. He got just enough of the ball to put it in play and that’s all he needed. Tough play for the defense on what was kind of a swinging bunt. Go ahead run on base. Urias now at the plate. There’s the strike of the knees. and takes low for ball one. Action in the pen down there. Hector Nerys, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. The 1-1 swings and he pops it up near the pitchers now. Short and out number one on the grab. Now batting center fielder Lawrence Butler. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler 0 for four with three strikeouts and he’s grounded out. First pitch just misses. [Music] Runner on the go. Pitching for a strike. Safe at second and he easily steals the bag. Now a good opportunity to potentially jump ahead in this game here in the later innings. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. [Applause] Next offering upstairs. And that’s outside. Jacob Wilson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Number five. Two on, one out. Jacob Wilson will hit next. Known for his late inning heroics [Applause] and downstairs. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. Missed with a change up and it’s 2 and 0. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Applause] Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. Check swing called strap. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would had a chance. Just missed. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. Two on, one out. That’s ripped into the outfield. Could be extra bases around third. He scores and they have the lead. Runner around third. Tag and he’s out at the plate. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. This one lifted in the air left field and that’ll fall for a base hit. The throws offline. He’s saved and they lead by two. Comes through with the RBI. That’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shorts stop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough. But right there it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for the base hit. Two outs, runner at first. Now it’s the DH Brent Rooker. That pitch in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. 01’s the count. [Applause] Two outs. Pop foul out of play off to the right. [Applause] The O2 swings and miss has struck him out. The couple of runs in the inning puts him ahead. To the bottom of the ninth we go. Top of the order. Do up. It’s the A’s eight and the Astros six. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Mason Miller. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Back to the top of the order now. Leading off, Cam Smith. [Applause] A change up missing and it’s one and0 Miller in his second season. He features a four seam fast, a slider and he works in a change up and a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Swing and a miss. And he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Altuve in the box with one away as he takes ball one. That one in triple digits. Outside low. Two and one. Two balls, one strike. Swinging a ball popped up. Urias. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. Walker in the box now. No balls in a strike. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Falling behind two and one. And that one is inside. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. [Applause] popped up on Duhar. That’s the ball game. Another outing, another save. That’s his 20th of the season. And this was a good example of why they rely on him so heavily in these close games. Final score of 8-6 in this one. The A’s are victorious. for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
