REKAP: ⚾️ Chicago Cubs 8-4 loss to Milwaukee Brewers. Remembering Ryne Sandberg (1959-2025)

Welcome into the recap of the Cubs 8 to4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Monday evening. Cubs are now one game back of the Brewers in the NL Central. I’m David Kaplan. It’s brought to you by our great partners at Winrust. They are the exclusive home of Cubs checking. Click the QR code on your screen or go to winterrust.com/cubs and get your very own Cubs checking account. We’ll get to the ball game in a moment, but we got just such awful, awful news tonight. Cubs Hall of Famer, legend, ambassador, and just tremendously good guy, Ryan Sandberg succumbed to his battle with cancer tonight at just 65 years of age. Uh he was an incredible baseball player. Obviously, he was an even better person. Times 10. As good as he was as a player, times 10 is how good he was as a human being, as a father, as a husband. Uh I got the chance to work with him in the 2016 postseason run. We hired him at Comcast Sportsnet to work with me and Todd Hollinssworth, and we were together, I’ll never forget it, doing the pregame and the postgame for game six in Cleveland. And Rhino said at the end of it, “I’ll be here for pregame tomorrow, but then we’re going to win the World Series and I won’t be here for the post game cuz I’m going to celebrate with the team.” And I said, “I hope you’re right.” He said, “No, I am right. The Cubs, it’s time. They’re going to win the World Series.” And the next day, we took a picture on the set, and I have a bunch of pictures that we’re going to have here on the recap. Uh, and I said after the pregame, “Hey man, you going to come back out when we win?” He said, “Absolutely not. I am going to party with the team.” Party he did. He had a great time. Uh, the last time I spoke with him, he did our Cubs recap podcast with me and Gordon Whitten Meyer when he had been declared cancerree and we celebrated with him on the air and we talked baseball and he was just in such great spirits. and then to get the horrible news in December that his cancer had returned in a much more aggressive fashion and then to start to hear that things were not going well. Uh, a lot of broken hearts around Cubs Nation tonight. He was as good a guy as you would possibly have hoped. And if you were one of those lucky ones that got to interact or got to meet him out there, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Ryan Sandberg was just a Hall of Famer in every sense of the word. Uh we send our deepest sympathies to his wife Margaret, to all of their kids, and to all of his friends, and all of you fans out there that loved number 23, Cub second baseman Ryan Samberg, who died tonight at the age of 65 from complications from his long battle with cancer. Uh the game seems so trivial, but uh the games do go on. Cubs had a three- nothing lead after one. Jacob Miserowski, the tremendously talented rookie pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, had a ground ball that he threw away at first base that scored two runs, gave the Cubs a three nothing lead uh in the first inning. And then Matthew Boyd was uncharacteristically wild. Just not very good tonight. not the Matthew Boyd that we have seen throughout this season so far. Uh let me take you quickly through how some of the scoring went down. Uh Cubs have the two nothing lead. Michael Bush scores on a wild pitch and then Ian Hap is the one that hit the ball that Ms. uh threw away. And then in the bottom of the third, Christian Yelich a double to right. It’s 3-1. Isaac Collins with two strikes on him gets a base hit, two-run score. It’s 3-3. Bryce Terang, a sack fly to Pete Crow Armstrong in center. And by the way, PCA, please hit the cut off, man. It didn’t cause any further damage, but there was no chance you were throwing the runner out. You allowed the base runner to move up, the the uh man on first to move up to second because you threw all the way through to home. Got to be better fundamentally. It has to get cleaned up. Bottom five, Andrew Vaughn, who’s just been great for the Brewers. A homer to center. Sal Felick in the six. A homer to right. Kyle Tucker got a hit uh to drive in a run and then Christian Yelich a two-run home run. Bottom seven. There’s your ball game. Cubs lose this one 8-4. Our Hooters winging it. Starting pitching matchup for Boyd. Five innings, five hits, five runs. All earned. 2Ks and five walks in a home run allowed. Miserowski wasn’t great, but he was better. Four innings, three hits, three runs, two of them earned. The error was charged to him on a throw. Sevenks, two walks, and the Brewers win that ball game. Player of the game. I could go a number of ways, but I think I’m going to give it to Isaac Collins with that gamety hit. That was a big big at bat. So, Isaac Collins is the apt player of the game. ABT.com. Next up for the Cubs, it’s a Tuesday night, 6:40 pitch at American Family Field. the Cubs and the Brewers in game two of this three-game set and then they’ll close it out Wednesday afternoon in a game I will be at at Amfam Field. The Cubs and the Brewers at 110. Cubs lose tonight 8 to 4. And again, our deepest condolences to the family and friends and fans of Ryan Samberg who died tonight at the age of 65. Have a great rest of your evening. We appreciate you greatly. Take that.

The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers came into a 1st showdown with what looked to be a pitchers dual. It didn’t live up to the hype and both teams played sloppy at times. Matthew Boyd had arguably his worst start as a Cub, walking 5 and allowing 5 runs. Highly touted Jacob Misorowski had a rough 1st inning, allowing 3 runs with giving up an RBI. A wild pitch and a throwing error gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Boyd quickly gave it back and Christian Yelich eventually delivered the big blow with a HR.

However, the game feels secondary on this night as Hall of Famer and former Cub MVP Ryne Sandberg passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 65. Kap gives a touching tribute to one of the all time great guys. He’ll be missed by Cubs Nation, baseball fans and family and friends everywhere.

Take That!

  1. PCA should have run on that strikeout wild pitch instead of go to the dugout. Or is he not allowed to do that in the situation at the time? Because some have said that.

  2. Boycott Wrigley Fields now! Da loveable losers forever cubbies gots massacreds buys da Brewers. Cubbies gots no heart. Theys done. PCA an Nico actins da ignant uneducated fools. 3. GOD Bless your Soul Ryan Sandberg. My dad's favorite player, Peoria Chiefs coach who was always kind to me. I Pray 🙏 for your Soul, that GOD Blesses you and your family. In Jesus name I Pray 🙏

  4. The passing of Ryno sure puts things into perspective. So sad that he’s gone 😢🙏 Games go on and it’s disappointing to see Boyd had a difficult night pitching and it just wasn’t good for the Cubs, but it happens.

  5. Boyd averages less than one walk per game. When he comes out and walks the first two batters, something is definitely wrong. CC knew it in the first but kept him out there way too long because that's what he does.

  6. It's because of Ryne Sandberg that I, and I'm sure many many kids became Cubs fans and baseball fans. What a horrible 7-8 days for losing so many Legends and stars we love and will never forget. RIP Ryne "My Baseball Hero"

  7. I remember being fourteen years old and watching a young Ryne Sandberg at Wrigley Field. He was not the most out going player. He was a total professional. Never said no to an autograph and will always be one of my favorite players ever! My condolences to his wife Margaret and his family. God Bless! You will be missed.
