Nationals vs. Astros Game Highlights (7/28/25) | MLB Highlights
A new series starts and a new pitcher on the mound. Somber Valdez is at left. He making his 21st start. We talked about how good he is here at Dykin Park. He wants to continue that success here and stop this skid. But he has got great numbers on the season. 2.67 is at erra. Tried to hold up on a pitch down and away. And Abrams is down on strikes as he could not hold his swing. Ryan Wills, a third base umpire, rings him up for the first half. He’s down for a ball. Three and two. Got him. Other strike out with the curve ball. Bramber starts and ends the inning with a K. Nationals nothing Astros coming up and Brad Lord gets the start tonight on the attack. Forcing fast ball slider little sinker. We know the upshoot on it. But the big thing for me with Brad Lord is the whip. Sub one. Here’s the pitch. Swing a ground ball left side. House over near shortstop. The third baseman scoops and throws and Brad Lord matches Frober Valdez with a one two three inning. Next up is Paul D. Young. Great veteran. You can plug him in anywhere on the infield. going to slap one near the right field line and that’s going to be a fair ball that’ll go spinning into the seats for a one-out double. That makes it an eightgame hitting streak for D. Young ball to the right side. Bryce Matthews right next to Christian Walker will make the play with the short toss in the second out. On the play, D Young moves to third. Here’s another 22year-old coming up for the Nationals. Third baseman Brady House. House goes down on strikes. Braber another strike out with that main weapon. in the curveball has all three today. He strands a runner on third. We head to the bottom of the second. Rad Lord mows him down. Three very soft ground ball outs. So Lord, six up, six down and second starts. It’s coming back out of the bullpen. We go to the third. Riley Adams stepping in. Riley could get fooled and hit one out of this ballpark down the line with one hand, but he’ll stay back and line a single. And the good news is Jacob Young is back in there today. Oh yeah. Called third strike. Bottom of the zone. Young threw the bat away. He was questioning that last call, but that had all kinds of plate for the four strikeout for Proverbs. Downside ball four off the glove of Diaz. Big carum off the wall behind the plate. But that’s a chance here. Runners first and second and one out. Alex Cole the batter. Got him. That is strikeout number 1,000 in Frober Valdez’s career. He becomes the 10th Astro ever to reach 1,000 strikeouts. It’s fitting that he does it on a curve ball, breaking it well below that MD Anderson strike zone. The back footer gets strikeout number 1,000. Got him. 1,00 and 1,01 in his career on the curve ball. Rice Matthews 5 for 32, hitting 156, three homers, swinging a miss right back with a fast ball. Struck him out 96 mph with a heater and Matthews got on three pitches. The first strike out for Bran Lord. Two out, nobody on here in the bottom of the third inning. And Zack Short is the batter. Out over the plate, Brady House. He’ll just turn and bounce it casually over there. He looks like he’s been playing on this diamond for two or three years. Three straight one, two, three innings for Brad Lord. Here’s Paul D. Young doubled into the right field corner his last time up. Swinging a miss. Strike three. Good breaking ball there. Seventh strike out for Fber. Yeah, three straight curve balls to Young. Dalon Lyle now the batter. Left fielder grounded out his last time up on the ground. Christian Walker has it. Tells Bra, I got you. And he does for the final out of the inning. A smooth 1, two, three, four Valdez. Another opportunity for a strikeout with the curve ball here as he’s got a one-two count. Already has seven strikeouts. Another strikeout. Another strikeout with the curve. That’s now eight for Prober on the night. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just continue to attack with that breaking ball. You might see some of these national hitters try and be a little more aggressive early in counts to avoid getting to that breaking ball because it has been wiped out in this game. Strike three call on the outside corner with the curve. That is nine strikeouts for Frober. And there are two away. Half of the ball on the plate, half of the ball off of the plate. 10 strikeouts all on the curveball on a night where he crossed over the 1,000 career strikeout plateau is having a big K9 tonight. And that is outside ball four pitch walk to Yiner Diaz. So there goes the perfect game for Brad Lord who had retired the first 14 in a row. So the Astros have a two-out base runner for Duban. Lord delivers and Duban lines it down the left field line. That’s a fair ball and will bound all the way into the corner. Lyle digging it out of the corner. Yiner gets the way from Tony Perez. Tikica. There will be no throw to the plate. Yiner scores. Astros lead one to nothing on their first hit of the game. An RBI double by Mauricio Duban. Comes with two outs. What a dagger. Paul’s got good numbers this year facing lefties. 280 hitter on the season. Got him. Number 11 for Prober. 11 of them on the curveball. Outside high ball four and Bell has drawn a wall. The second issued by Valdez in the game. A two-out base runner brings up Nathaniel Low. Breaking ball hit in to right. A long way to go for Traml. Ricky Guty Everest sending Josh Bell. He will score and the Nets have tied it. Each team with a two out walk and then an RBI double. And the first curveball put in play today is Nathaniel Low. He finally gets one that stays elevated in the zone. And Josh Bell gets to go for a nice little stroll. Low off second, the 02. Got him. Frustrated at the end of his outing, but he has a dozen strikeouts tonight. He’ll walk off the mound in a 1-1 game. Another lefty for the Astros. It’s Brian King now in for Valdez. Fra went six innings, gave up three hits, one run, two walks, and a dozen strikeouts. Riley Adams, one for two. High in the air to right. It’s got some carry. See you later. And Riley Adams, six of the year puts the Nets on top. It’s the Nationals two of the Astros one and it’s two low with another splinter. Ball four. Now the Astros have runners on first and second with nobody out. So now here’s Diaz coming to the plate. He’s bounced to short and he has drawn a walk. Ground ball to the middle. Abrams has it. He shovels to D Young. Throw to first. Double play and a sparkling 643 for the Nets. Nicely done knowing your runner. Paul D. Young not rushing. Great job. Oh, but a third goes Walker there with two out. Front door and he got him. Duban gave up on it. And how about that? The Nats with a double play ball and this strike three call. Cooper Hmel comes off the bench with a ground ball base hit into the left field. And the Astros have a two out base runner for Altuve. Well, Jose always finds a way to come up in a big moment. Abrams has it backpedaling to the outfield grass. He throws to second. It’s in time to retire Hmel on the force play and Ferrer gets a huge out to retire the side in the eighth. Well, the game of baseball has done it again. 345 in the ninth against the Nets closer. Cal Finnegan looking for number 20. Victor Keratini 0 for three. Switch hitter batting left. One pitch top spin low to Finnegan. Best way an inning can start for a reliever. So Keratini 0 for two against Finnegan. Christian Walker one for two steps in. 02 pitch with one out up and in. Check swing. He tried and Kyle Finnegan completely handcuffs a good hitter. Two outs. Great ride on that fast ball by Kyle Finnean. Jacob Melton left-handed hitting center fielder. Houston’s final hope. And Melton lifts it down the left field line slicing toward the corner. Long run for Lyle. And it is just fouled. Home run distance. missed a game-tying long ball by three feet. If that would have been his first major league homer. Two balls, two strikes. Finnegan deals. Swinging a miss on a splitter in the dirt. Adams applies the tag and the Nationals win the ball game two to one and the Nationals start this series off right with a win here in Houston. The Houston Astros suffer their fifth consecutive defeat, a season high losing streak.
