🔴LIVE 🔴Tampa Bay Rays VS New York Yankees/July 28 /MLB THE SHOW 25
Utah second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the New York Yankees. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, almost ready to get underway and today’s starting pitcher, Carlos Rodon. What do we have on him? Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. Okay, all set to go. And stepping in is the speedy number 14. And a foul ball. Oh, that got him. First batter of the game is hit by the pitch. Yandi Diaz nowated Yandi Diaz. No ball, one strike. [Music] And it’s quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter. [Applause] Nobody out. runner at first. Foul ball still 0 and two. Rodon sets and deals. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you can get hurt. swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, even though he strikes out, he saw a lot of pitches and he battled. Plus, it gave the guys behind him an opportunity to see more from the pitcher. Not the result he wanted, but that’s still a good at bat. And stepping in for the Rays, Jonathan Aranda. Snap throw to first. Back in safe. Really close inside. One and0. fast ball for a strike. Man at first, one away. The one-1 is fouled off. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate. You know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Now a chance for Junior Camro. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s nothing and two. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. gets a piece and stays alive. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. The Rays strand just the one and now the Yankees will see what they can do. No score. Back after this on the show. Back in the Bronx and starting on the mound for the Rays, Shane Bos. What do you have on him? Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch, he’s going to get a swing and miss, get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. Trent Gisham, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Gisham, a guy that understands the strike zone. Come on, let’s go. That misses now. Two and0. Next offering is fouled back. Missing inside now. Three and one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. and foul ball. [Applause] That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Digging in, Ben Rice. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Gisham gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. swing and a hard hit grounder to third. And that’s a fair ball. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count. Up against it with two strikes right there. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. First and second, no outs. Cody Bellinger stepping in now for the Yankees. Squirts away a little bit, but no advance from the runners. [Applause] Come on, Cody. Andy O2 on the ground. Two ball. Slings to second onto first. Double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Stanton the next to hit. Another solid power season right through there for a strike. That’s outside. Ball one. Two outs with a runner at third. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Yankees 22 now. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going two outs. Misses outside and it’s three and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Let’s go Yankees. Got him. That’s the inning. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Top of the second. And now the right fielder Josh Low Rodon back to work clips the corner and one man I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Oh, he’s really dialed in. And this offense is going to have to do something to try to break that rhythm. Maybe it’s square around the bond, step out of the box, agitate him a little bit, do something that just changes what’s happening right now because at this pace, it’s going to be a long game. So, you got to figure it out quickly. Jake Mangum, batting with one down, takes a strike. Mangum, 29 years old, and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019. bottom of the zone and a called strike. [Applause] Fouled off and they’ll do it again. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Tristan Gray digs in now trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. Tap foul at the plate. Get the double play. Rodon fires. Closed but called a ball. And that’s ball one. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Taylor Walls now at the plate. And that one fouled off. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the top of the second. Here’s the O2. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Rodon ready. Here comes ground ball left side down the line and it’s fouled. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still. That one is absolutely belted. This looks like extra bases. One runs in coming home. Across is the runner from first and they lead by two. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Matt th comes up to hit here. Line drive and that’s just foul. man at second. Swing and a miss. That’s strike two. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult, especially for a left-handed hitter to track. Struck him out looking. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. They’re hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after him. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Just missed. And another ball. Next offering is fouled back. Little tardy on that fast ball. Is going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. And here it comes. And that’s downstairs and outside. Yandi Diaz up next for the Rays. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Dominguez makes the play and that’ll do it. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double and it’s two zip. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show here at New Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. And now Jazz Chisum Jr. Jazz Chisum Jr. Thought after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. And that drops in for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger. And perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. inside. Almost got him. Hard hit right side in plenty of time to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting six, left fielder, Jason. Jason Dominguez stepping in now for the Yankees. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris and first offering is fouled off. One out. Base is empty. outside and the count is one and one. [Music] Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. You tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. That’s down and in. A slider missed. [Applause] And that one hammered. That’s back. That’s back some more. Out of here. Home run number 10 on the year. And they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 2-1. Well, there goes the shut out. Just like that. They’re still behind, but this is a start. [Applause] He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. There’s Ryan McMahon now. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. A lot of pitchers have caught on to how good he is hitting the first pitch. Smart to avoid the zone right there. One down. Base is empty. That pitch gets the inside corner and the count one and one. late on that fast ball. Baya, you got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. Cut on and miss. Struck him out and there’s two down. Toughest pitch to hit. Fast ball and then the outer black. Man, sometimes you just got to tip your cap. Stop. Anthony Vulpi. And stepping in for the Yankees, Anthony Vulpi. And first offering is fouled off. No, that’s a ball. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across. Bottom half of inning number two. swings and misses and it’s one and two. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Got him swinging. The Yanks do get one on the solo homer. And it’s now a two-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. All set for the start of the inning. To the plate now for the Rays is the DH Yandi Diaz. Just missed. Well, these Rays doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count, and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Still relatively early, but with the pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Got him. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Jonathan Aranda next to hit for the Rays. He was a strikeout victim his first time. That’s out to center field. Gisham settles under it. puts it away for the out. Two down. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Next to bat will be the Rays four hitter, Junior Camro. First pitch misses. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Two down to that one down the line and it goes just foul. And that just misses. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. That one 95 to finish him off. Down in order go the Rays. They lead it 2-1. Back at Yankee Stadium as we go to the last of the third. Here’s the power hitting catcher Austin Wells. Check swing called strike. That one in there across the letters outside low and the count is one and two. stays alive. Yanks out of the ground to third and he can’t come up with it. Still manages a throw and save. Couldn’t recover from the misplay. Leadoff man aboard on the error and that puts your pitcher in a little bit of a tough spot right away to start the inning. not where you want to be. So, we’ll see if he’s able to work around it and pick the defense up. Back to the top of the Yankee order. Here’s the center fielder, Trent Gisham. Let off the bottom of the first with a walk. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. Welds on at first. Nobody out and a swing and a miss. One ball, one strike. [Applause] Two one. [Applause] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Brings it in and there’s one down. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. And up next for New York, Ben Rice, one for one with a single so far. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Yankees fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 Yankees hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it. And not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Here’s Cody Bellinger. He hit into a double play his first time up down the middle for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. And that is out of play. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Come on, York. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. One error in the inning, but nothing more. Three innings complete. It’s the Rays two and the Yankees won. back at Yankee Stadium as we go to the top of the fourth. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low and that one wrapped foul. [Music] [Applause] ball. One there. him down and a swing and a miss. Strike out number eight. Wow, just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Jake Mangum. And first offering is fouled off and he drops it down the third baseline. Scoops it up bare-handed on the money. Nice play. Well, he gave the bunt a shot there, but not able to execute. Yeah, I think he rushed it a little bit. And when guys rush, can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player. Two outs, space is empty. Tristan Gray will hit next. Just missed. One ball, no strike. fouls one off out of play. Back to our left, back to the mound and it finds its way through for a hit and that extends the inning. That’s backto-back singles for him. Just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. So a man at first, Taylor Walls next to hit for the Rays. He drove in two with a double his first time up. Fast for a strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. And that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Gray the runner at first with two gone. Swing. Get a ball popped up. Chisum on the move. He makes the grab and that is that. One left for Tampa, but they still lead it two to one. Back in New York. And now it’s John Carlos Stanton. Jean Carlos Stanton. And that one is downstairs. And it’s one and0. You know, these Yankees showing great discipline at the plate, and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. And that’s outside. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. That one fouled off. Two and two on the ground out to short. Jump throw and they get the out. Now batting second base Chisum Jr. Man, Chris, a jump throw like that is certainly worthy of the stackcast treatment. Let’s see what the numbers have to say about it. Yeah, these are some favorable numbers, Boo. This is the type of play that showcases his arm strength. I mean, he made it look easy, but I promise you that’s not a throw every shortstop can make, especially with that much behind it. Jazz Chisum Jr. now grounded out his first time up, swinging a highfly ball out towards right field. snags it for the second out. Now batting Jason Dominguez the next to hit. He’s already homered here in this one. And there’s the strike. That just misses and that is ball one. Two out. Space is empty. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. No runs, no hits, no errors. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Rays two and the Yankees won. Back in the Bronx, top five, John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Matt Thice. Let’s go. New York. Rodone back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Thice measures 6 feet even 215 lbs and they traded for him earlier this year. quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. The two fights it off. You’ll see another. And that one way outside. And it’s one and two. Strike him out. To the right side. Rice steps on first for the out. Now batting center fielder Chandler Simpson. So, the Rays batting order turns over. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. He’s 0 for one. Foul ball there. The next offering misses. And now it’s even one and one. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. shortened a bunt and missed it. One and two and that’s downed away. and down on strikes. That’s his ninth strikeout so far. And the batter now Yandi Diaz bowl for two in this one. First pitch and he just misses. Right through there for a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. That one missed. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Gisham is there. Makes the catch and that’ll do it. Three up, three down that time. Last half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Rays two and the Yankees won. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s the third baseman, Ryan McMahon. Ryan McMahon. That one almost got him. out to short into the outfield base hit. Off to a good start with a leadoff nine. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. No outs. Runner at first. And now the shorts stop. Anthony Vulpi 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Fast ball for a strike at 95. McMahon gets his lead at first with nobody out. Come on Yankees in the air. Right field pretty well struck back there. Holds it in on the warning track. Now that in catcher Austin Wells. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. And that’s fouled off. Tying run is at first. Last half of inning number five. And a swing and a miss there. left field. Mangum pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two down. Now here’s Trent Gisham. Center fielder Trent Gishaw MVP and the first pitch misses for ball one York. swinging a foul out of play. Oh, he’s got to be pretty proud of this outing so far. Sometimes guys cower coming into a ballpark like this, but he is attacked hitters. Pitching on the road like this is very impressive. This has been a treat to watch. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And they don’t get an out on the play. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Rice up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. The 10. Slapped hard the other way, but fouled. Let’s go. There’s a 1-1. Fast ball for a strike. That one missing inside [Applause] on the ground right side and it’s just fouled. That was close. [Music] Next offering upstairs. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Two aboard, two outs, and that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense booth. It’s all about creating opportunities, and this is one of them right here. Two outs. Bases full. Bellinger up to hit. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Edwin Usetta warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Angler getting cranked up as well. Next pitch is outside. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. [Applause] Downing ball here. Rolls. Foul. Hit hard on the ground to short. They get the force out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed. Huge opportunity miss there. Five innings complete. It’s the Rays two and the Yankees won. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher number 31. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So digging in, Jonathan Aranda. First baseman Jonathan Aronda. Let’s go Yankees. And that’s outside. One and0 movement in the Yankees pen. Ian Hamilton getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Next offering is in for a strike. Yeah, there’s the strike. [Applause] This one high in the air to left center. Dominguez on his way over. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Junior Camro getting ready to hit who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. upstairs. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitters count at 2 and 0. Check swing and that’s a ball. Clearly taking all the way there in that 3 count. It was a cookie right down the middle way inside and that hit him. And now the right fielder Josh Low. Josh Low. And that drops in for a strike. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and the count even one and one. This one in the dirt. Runner on the goal. Fouls one off. Two and two. Now a fly ball to right center. Gisham settles under it and there’s two down. [Applause] Here’s the left fielder, Jake Mangum. Jake Mangum, New York. First pitch just misses. Camro leads off first with two down to the inning. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Not close with that one. Two and two. down. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. Third out and that ends the frame. So no runs, no base hits, no errors and one left on. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Rays two and the Yankees won. Bottom of the six. John Carlos Stanton to the plate now. Jean Carlos Stanton. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Just missed. If he’s able to connect on that, look out and one. That’s inside. Fouled off. He was late. Swing and a miss. Catcher has it. Fires the first. Got him. One away on the strike out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curve ball down low to get him swinging now. Especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days. That’s a devastating combination. And now Kevin Cash out of the dugout and ready to make a move to the bullpen. Shane Bos is done and he was a tough nut to crack. Pretty stingy from start to finish. Back with a new arm after a quick break. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Ryan Pepio. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. So up next, Jazz Chisum Jr. Yankees check swing. Did he go? No, he didn’t. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the six. On the corner for a strike. And there’s a foul ball. Swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. Now the throw to first on the run. Nicely done for the out. Now batting left fielder Jason Dominguez. Now, here is Jason Dominguez. He’s already homered in this game. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] That catches the corner. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. And there’s a ball. Swing. And a ball lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. That one’s back there. And that ball is gone. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And this game is tied. It’s 2-2. They just sparked this home crowd in a big way. What a swing. Get as many high fives as possible. Man, this guy’s a ball of energy right now and having the game of his life. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Ryan McMahon steps to the plate, delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. That’s hard hit on the line and that’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Now batting the short and next for New York Anthony Vulpi his split numbers between June and July there. And a foul ball missed with a change up. Ball one. just off the inside edge. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. Out to short Walls. They take the force out and that is the inning. Another look at the long ball for the Yankees. two two game. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Tim Hill. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Tim Hill. And now it’s going to be Tristan Gray. He’s two for two. Tristan inside just missed Yankees. [Applause] Come on Yankees. That clips the corner. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. And a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Good job to fight that one off. hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit and after grinding through that at bat, he gets the best of him. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Taylor Wall digs in now. A switch hitter batting right. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. [Music] There’s the swing and a miss. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. Chopped to third. Feed to second. That’s one over to first. Safe now. Matt. Now up for Tampa Bay. Matt th you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher and what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head that’s in for a strike one away tie game go ahead run stands at first pulled hard but it’s a foul ball with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. Ground ball up the middle. Oh, look at the stop and he beats it. He’s safe. Well, with his speed, he doesn’t get a whole lot of those infield hits, but he was giving it everything he had right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Number 14 in the box now. Takes strike one. York in the air right side. Squeezes it now. A long throw to first. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. Diaz. [Applause] Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. A pair of strikeouts and he’s flyed to center. And that one fouled off. Two on, two outs. Fought off foul. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Just misses. One and two to count. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Good eye right there. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And they’re all loaded up. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay. Jonathan Aranda 0 for three with two flyouts and a strikeout. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Just missed. Boo. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down with a go ahead run at third here in the top half of inning number seven. And the slider just misses. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Deep breath. He’s ready and he fires in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. Runner around third on his way to the plate. The relay and he’s out. That ends the inning, but two runs do score. They get two runs on three hits. No errors and one left. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Rays four and the Yankees two. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Edwin Usetta. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees. The Yankees looking to rally. first pitch swinging. You know, these Yankees need to bring up the quality of their at bats and specifically their swings. They’ve got to be frustrated with how many balls they’re hitting on the ground. It’s been one grounder after another, it seems. And I’m not sure the infield grass could take much more of this. Boo. Handles, throws to first, gets the catcher by a step. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. [Applause] Fouled off left side. Of course, you have to credit the pitching for making them beat the ball into the ground so often, but I haven’t seen much of adjustment from the hitters yet either. Got to find a way to get under the ball a little bit more and get it in the air. Hard ground ball base knock and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Now the number two hitter Ben Rice. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes tap foul at the plate. [Music] Y’all, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. And that one is inside. Activity in the bullpen. Garrick Clevenger preparing to come on if needed. Angler, the right-hander, loosening up as well. With the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the seventh breaking ball misses down and away. Way to lay off that pitch down. You can do it. Let’s go. Still two and two after the foul ball. Tying run at the plate on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. [Applause] This one driven deep way back there and it’s gone. We are tied. He sends it out of here. It’s 44. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Here comes Cody Bellinger. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And that one missing low. Swing and a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they have the lead. They do it again. back-to- back homers. Home run number 20 on the year. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s 5-4. He put a charge into that one. That was a lightning swing right there. No doubt about it. [Applause] Backto back jacks. And this club is fired up right now, Boo. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other. And the collective confidence just continues to grow. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Edwin Usetta will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now on the mound for the Rays, Garrick Clevenger just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. [Applause] John Carlos Stanton at the plate. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering is in for a strike late with the swing there. Well, that’s today’s style of baseball right there. Right. Big time VO on the bump and big time pop at the plate. swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days, but when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Chisum in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Goes down looking but two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 54 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jonathan Loisa. Well, he’s had trouble at times keeping the ball in the park this season. Something to keep in mind here. Number 43. Jonathan Lisa. Well, one-run game now. The third base, Junior Camo. A lot of times you’re looking for a guy to get that tying run on base, but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game with one swing here. Hard liner drops into the glove and there’s one away. Clearly ready to hit right there. First pitch of the inning hits a bullet and it just is one of those bad luck abs. Josh Low will hit next. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. [Applause] And ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Devin Williams getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Hamilton, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. looking to get the tying run on base. That one clips the outside corner and it’s one and one. Blind drive could be extra bases. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. Here’s the throw. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And stepping in for the Rays, Jake Mangum, third baseman, playing on the edge of the grass, looking for the sack bunt and fouled off. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. a base hit, it’s probably gonna be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. So, the tying run at second. That pitch in for a strike and a count is 0 and two. Rays down by a run and misses inside. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. really think the outer half is open that misses the zone and the count is two and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again with the tying run at second as the Rays try and punch back down a run. on the ground to the left. Fair ball heading for the plate. He’ll score and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Huge advant to bring home the tying run at this point in the game with a pitch away. That’s exactly what you want to do with it. Drive it the other way and right there just barely able to keep it fair down the line for the double. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. Tristan Gray now at the plate. Three for three with three singles. Gets the call. Going one. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Not even close there. And one and one. Here’s the pitch. Runner breaks for third on the ground, but it kicks fouled. Next pitch is downstairs. That’s a little bit low. Taylor Walls in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. One out. The go-ahead run is at second and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Music] [Applause] That’s the third down the line and it’s foul. [Music] and ball four to a board. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Jonathan Loisa done for the night and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Ian Hamilton gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. Now up for Tampa Bay, Taylor Walls. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame wrap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. That one is upstairs. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. And that is out of play. Mangum the lead runner out at second. Gray over at first with one away. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. And that one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. [Music] spoils that one and it remains two and two. That’s a strike out. Woody Keller says he won a round. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. And I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. In the box now takes strike one. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Strike him out. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Two outs. Swanging a ground ball and that’s just fouled. [Applause] Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Two strikes. Two strikes. First and second, two down. Got him. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back here in New York now. It’s the switch hitting outfielder Jason Dominguez. Jason Dominguez. Hey, stay hot. Clevenger back to work. This one in the air center field. He’s under it. Makes the grab and there’s one away. Now batting third base. Aaron Boon making a move for a new bat. Paul Goldmith looking to start something with one gone. Goldmith. That’s outside and that’s ball one. That one missing inside. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. In for a strike and it’s two and one. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. swing at a high-fly ball right field and there are two down now batting. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees 0 for three in this one. Clevenger 30 years old now and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Kansas. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. ball. One strike. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. Ball a strike. The pitch right through there for a strike. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] breaking ball in there. Got him looking and he’s registered three Ks in this one. So, the Yanks go in order. Our score holds at five apiece. So, they turn to their closer Devin Williams. Well, he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin. His strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season. Now into the game, Oswald Pza. He’s the new third baseman. Oswald Pza. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Now, this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. And that’s outside. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on, see if you can get a stolen base, maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. And a strike in there. really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. [Applause] Chopper to second. Chisum throws to first in time. They keep a big threat off the bases. Huge in a tie game like this. One out. Diaz. Now it’s the DH Yandi Diaz. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Brent Hedrick appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. York. swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Spoils the two strike pitch and he’ll see another [Music] Little bit high now. One and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. So, two down now and here is Jonathan Aranda. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. All tied up here in the top of the ninth. Outside corner. There’s a strike and a foul ball. Come on. Punch him out. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. Going back and it’s off the wall. Not stopping. He’s going for three. In safely with a two out triple and the go-ahead runs at third. Everything came together for him. Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been, but obviously you have to be happy with that result. A lot riding on this next at bat now as they look to take the lead at a critical point in this one. So here’s the cleanup hitter, Junior Camero. That misses and that is ball one. Two down. Go ahead. Run in scoring position. And that drops in for a strike. Swinging a ground ball up the middle and a base hit. Runner from third in to score and it’s an RBI single and in the ninth they take the lead. Oh, that atbat had a lot riding on it. Certainly a pivotal swing of the bat in this ball game. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. So, two down. Josh Low next to hit for the Rays. One for four with a double. Swings through that one. 0 and one. swinging a foul straight back just misses the mark outside the zone. His understanding of the strike zone very impressive. That was a very close 02 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball two. That one missed. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. battling here as he fouls it away. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in the scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. First and second, two outs. Jake Mangum next to hit for the Rays. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. That one finds the zone. 0 and two. [Applause] Ball one there. Gets a piece and stays alive. runs it up to 96 to record the punch out, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 65. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Pete Fairbanks. And this is his 40th appearance of the season. So, he’s starting to log a decent amount of work this year. Pete Fairbanks. Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees. Austin Wells. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But left the bat on his shoulder. One-run game. Bottom nine. And that one is inside ball one. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. And the tying run is on with a leadoff single. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. Back to the top of the order now. And stepping in for the Yankees, Trent Gisham. That one not close. Ball one. [Applause] Tying run at first. The winning run at the plate. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. [Applause] Come on now. Come on. in the dirt. Blocked and the runner stays where he is. Trying to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Walks out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. Bottom of the ninth, one-run game. Two on. Ben Rice stepping in now for the Yankees. Yankees. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. on a line and this one looks like trouble around third. He’ll score and the Yankees even it up. Across is the winning run and the Yankees win it on a walk-off 76. [Applause] In this situation, this guy’s looking to put the ball in play and find a hole somewhere. Well, he did exactly that. Drives into a very cool walk-off win. [Applause] [Applause] One-run game here today. Your final score 7 to6. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
