Other key quotes:

“Redick points to the 6-2, 205-pound Davion Mitchell of the Miami Heat or his friend and former teammate, the 6-1, 190-pound T.J. McConnell of the Indiana Pacers, as examples of the type of game changer James can become.

But part of their skill sets is a two-way relentlessness that requires tremendous stamina, a physical output James has not sustained.

‘On every single possession, they're in the game — whether that's offensively or defensively — they're able to impact it with how hard they play,’ Redick said.

‘With the defensive pickup points, the disruption, being able to get downhill … I think we have all seen these amazing flashes of it from Bronny. And to get to that next level for him, it's cardio fitness.’

‘He's cleared. … I get that there's a history there of a really scary thing that he had to live through, and I think it's tough to push past certain points for him, but he's going to get there. He's going to get there.’”

  1. If Bronny becomes a TJ style player I’d be super happy, that kinda player from the 55th pick is great value regardless of who his dad is

  2. I thought he was already in decent shape in SL, i think the issue is he isn’t good on-ball, and needs a really consistent 3P shot because of his size for him to ever make sense.

  3. Man it must suck to have nba level talent at his height. If he had his dad’s height he’d be a really good role player.

It’s interesting that JJ is saying that the main way for Bronny to get minutes in the NBA is by giving maximum effort on both sides of the ball, but obviously Bronny is going to have the heart attack incident lingering in the back of his mind. I really hope we don’t see a repeat of that in the NBA.

  5. He’s only 6-2 without elite ball handling.  His ceiling is 3 and D role player.

  6. He is going to be given every chance imaginable to become a functional NBA player. Something virtually no other player with his profile and draft position would be given.

An underskilled 6’1 player would have to prove himself for years before they were even given a shot at the NBA. A guy like Patrick Beverly is a good comp for what Bronny would normally have to do first.

  7. Is this JJ Redick’s answer for every player? Luka “needs to get in playoff shape” now Bronny “needs to get into Elite Shape”.

I’m not saying he’s wrong in fact it’s probably great advice for every NBA player.

  8. His ass is out the league the second LeBron retires. That doesn’t mean he sucks he’s just not an nba talent. Nobody with his skill set and size would even get half the chances he’s got.

  9. if this kid can get in better shape, get a better motor, learn to shoot better and grow a half foot, he’ll almost be a starter!

  10. Some of yall really don’t watch Bronny like that. He puts in big effort in spurts then disappears, both on the offensive end and defensive end. He comes across as “coasting” and it def seems to be a conditioning thing

There’s a reason he was on limited minutes in the SL.

The heart issue def has something to do with it like JJ said.. but Bronny doesn’t always give full effort in games I watch, looks gassed in spurts

  11. He’s a 2 way player at best, he’s not gonna be elite. He’s better than some of the G league players but nowhere near a lot to NBA players

  12. I like the take. He’s not saying he’s out of shape. But he’s also not elite talent. He’s saying he has to be in ELITE shape to maximize his ability to make difference. Seems like a fair take to me

  13. Idk why anyone is deluding themselves into thinking Bronny will be an impactful player on the NBA level. Not saying he’s a scrub, but he’s just basically like one of the dozens of players whose real ceiling as a contributor is G-League/overseas.

Here’s the issue: Bronny, as a 6’2” guard with not elite self creation skills, has one clear path to being a contributor: and that’s being a 3&D guy. But the problem is that as of now, he’s NOT a great on ball defender (so the “D” isn’t there), and NOT a great 3 point shooter even on catch and shoots (so the “3” part isn’t there either).

So the two main things he needs to be a contributor given his physical profile and general skill level, he doesn’t even have as of now. Of course, he could improve — work on becoming a better shooter, and a better on ball defender. But projecting him to improve enough to be an NBA caliber player is extremely optimistic and frankly not something you can count on. There’s tons of guys over the years who, if they just had a better shot/defense/etc., could’ve made it in the league — but didn’t.

I just feel like Bronny has too many flaws and too few impactful attributes to realistically think of him as an NBA level impact player, even as a deep bench guy.

  14. He’s gotta get stronger. Hes 20 and has young man energy which is good but he’s not fully built yet. Hes a smaller player so he’s gonna take a beaten playing hard on defense which is why he needs to get stronger. Conditioning will come once he plays more minutes and gets used to it.

  15. I think you’re born with truly elite cardio. I don’t think that’s something you can obtain from training.

You can go from bad cardio to good cardio, though. Or good to great.

  16. Shows how punishing NBA pace is. Bronny’s body is easily elite enough for any level of ball below the NBA but to sustain a high level consistently, night in and night out against super long and insanely quick NBA players who have been conditioned for it is a whole different beast.

  17. He’s a scrub and has never ever once been deserving of an nba roster spot lmfao

  18. And grow 4 inches. Dude is undersize. At his size, he needs Iverson level skills and athleticism, which he don’t gots.

  19. Lebron will be in LA for one more year and Bronny has this season to prove he can be a Laker, if not, they will be moving on with 54 million available to sign 2 players to build around Luka

  20. McMenamin isn’t wrong. I watched his Summer League games, and while he looked passable as a play maker, the reality is that this isn’t going to be his role in the NBA.

Unfortunately during his minutes on the court, he was trying to too hard to look like a lottery pick and didn’t put the same level of effort like he did in last year’s summer league hustling and engaging in defense. He looked better this year from a scoring standpoint, but his effort level was worse, and on a team with Luka, LeBron and Reeves he should really be focusing on his defense and off ball movement(which was sorely missing this summer League).
