Joshua Ravensbergen Media Availability As A San Jose Shark

you’re Locked on Sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the Locked On podcast network Your team every day Well John first reaction I mean you told us before you didn’t you didn’t really kind of expect What was your reaction when you heard your name get called yeah I had no clue It was a big surprise but couldn’t be more excited So cool I mean did you you know have any conversations with the Sharks i mean in your preparation whether it was at the combine or just leading up to the draft what experiences with the Sharks if any did you have yeah I had a couple Maybe not as many as other teams So wasn’t really on my radar as much but when I heard them call my name yeah kind of threw me off guard but just so cool Can’t really even describe the feeling We know that you’re uh at least friends or know Min Cabrini I mean how cool is it to have another Vancouver kid on the team especially one of that caliber that you’re joining in you know the core piece Yeah Yeah it’s really cool They’ve been skating a lot with him lately and you know he’s there and Carson Wch is there and uh King Yan is also there so there are quite a few Sharks prospects in band so it should be should be really cool You think that maybe you put in a good word for you maybe Maybe that’s why How long have you known Mlin uh last year I think I met him and then it’s more like this summer come back started skating with him quite a lot You know um like Luca or Carson more or just out Carson Yeah Carson just from skates a couple times and then Luca just playing against them Is that our winter club there or Yeah like we’ll we’ll skate they use the winter club and yeah there lots of skates area Just about where you thought you might go or what were your expectations coming into today i kind of had no clue like obviously you want to go as early as possible but I also wasn’t drafted the job so I knew it wasn’t about when I went but what would I do after and yeah I didn’t know if I was going to go first or second hear my name called now and just get it over with so cool you’ve always been kind of a taller kid or is this a late spurt or kind of your growth just you know 6’5 you know you’ve always been kind of one of your taller kids in your class or uh I was kind of average height in banttom and then after banttom I grew another inch pretty much every summer after that Yeah So definitely helps How much do you think size helps you just your position I mean obviously that’s a trend over the last few years the bigger goalies How much do you think that’s helped you i don’t think it really matters as much anymore Like you see a lot of smaller goalies like Wolfe kind of step into the league and starting to dominate So I think size isn’t really as much as a factor anymore It’s more you know skill-based which is you know good for the game And you know anybody have can have an opportunity It doesn’t matter you know where you will you know mark on the measuring board Part of the surprise uh being drafted by the Sharks that they also have another young goalie there in in Asar Rock Yeah Yeah So I wasn’t I wasn’t really expecting it but still so cool to hear my name called And um you you catch right-handed I understand there’s a story to that Yeah Yeah I I kind of got into hockey I played road hockey with my cousins and the goalie that they somehow managed to find was a right-handed catcher So when I started actually playing goalie that’s the one that kind of just felt natural So stuck with it Uh who do you uh model your game after goalie wise or who do you try to kind of steal from maybe I like watching a lot of Jakeer He’s big like me Skates really well He reads the play really well and I’ll try to take some things from his game and yeah he’s just goalie I really enjoy watching You mentioned you weren’t drafted in in the dub Now you can say you’re an NHL first round pick I mean is there somebody you can attribute just getting to where you were to now and having that behind you now i’d say you know just everybody around me that supported me There’s so many people you know from all my goalie coaches to my family who sacrificed you know so much to give me the opportunity to keep playing and keep chasing my dreams and the goalie coaching and staff up in PG and you know kind of everybody that’s been around me Everybody’s been great and you know I wouldn’t have been able to get this far without their help Who you have here tonight i I assume your parents but is there anybody special that you had here with you or somebody you want to call uh just my parents and my brother and my uncle So it’s nice that you could come but just keeping it small which is nice Is there a best friend at home maybe who you know a long night maybe watching and maybe sent you a text already saying “Oh my god I can’t believe you went in the first round.” Uh a couple guys from our team who are you know hoping hoping we’re going or they’re going to go tomorrow But we got a lot of texts for guys from the team some guys friends back home some old friends too So it’s really Yeah it’s really cool You hit a gold Uh I think I started when I was eight or nine Yeah I I want to say that’s when I first started What drew you to the position what did you uh from what I remember i just hated waiting in lines in practice That’s that was one of my first memories Like I just hated it Like I just wanted to be in the action all the time and I just enjoyed goalie a lot more Nice Nice Do you get that some of like you know you mentioned that just as a goalie mentality is a big thing does that just kind of keep you locked in in the moment because confidence as a goalie is key for success Does that you know maybe not wanting to wait around stay the way does that kind of help your focus during games yeah Yeah I’d say so I’d say the biggest thing for me like you do care about the game a lot but I find like when the puck drops just to go out there have fun you know trust yourself that’s kind of when I’m playing at my best and you know sometimes easier said than done but but if you’re able to kind of replicate that feeling and mindset and just know you’re prepared and have that confidence and belief in yourself you know I believe anything can happen I know there was a couple more here guys and we got to get another car wash Okay to do uh we know Mlin skates a lot in the summers from a glaze perspective how tiring are those skates this summer Uh one of the first couple ones I came out was ridiculous It was like hour on the ice and then he was out there shooting pucks for another hour and breakaways just kind of ridic I got off the ice I lo I actually lost eight pounds I measured myself from the gym in the morning I dropped 8 lbs of skate So you guys are practicing back Kind of ridiculous Yeah Uh sorry if this is out there but uh for next year is the plan to return to Prince George or you know NCAA or just do you have any sense of that yet yeah as of right now I’m going back to PG Okay And um Chris Mhouse mentioned that you had gone through some kind of you know adversity that kind of shaped you um lost a goalie coach I can you speak to some of the adversity that you went through that to get here yeah Yeah I was sadly my goal to coach Sean Murray when I found out he passed the kind of beginning of my rookie season cuz he was the one who got me the opportunity with PG once I wasn’t drafted and he was kind of the first one who put that belief in my head like I remember in peewee that he came up to me and was like uh how far do you want to go with this game like I believe you can play at a high level and that was the first time you know I’m thinking in my head you know what maybe I can do this so that I was really sad to hear that he passed but I’m sure sure he’s smiling up there right John Murray Shawn Murray Yeah Thank you

  1. Arguably got the best forward and best goalie in the draft, LFG! LET GMMG COOOOOOK! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³

  2. Like the pick. I think it's clear the sharks' scouts see him as a potential big impact on the system. And looking at the d men available, probably looking at second pair ceiling. If you're choice is between a second pair ceiling guy like Havelid, Pohlkamp, Misskey, Roberts, etc., or the giant goalie that might just make a huge impact in 3 or 4 years, seems like a solid choice.

Of course, it better be Fiddler at 33, but i really like this pick.
