Three Things: Valentine vs. Golden, Ty’Ron Hopper, Elgton Jenkins
Hey everybody, it’s three guys with three things from day two in pads. Michael, you are up. Well, Larry, I’m going to take a wild guess and say while the one-on- ones were going on, you and you were watching the offensive and defensive linemen. That’s why I was watching the pass catchers against the pass defenders one-on-one. There were a lot of really good matchups, but the matchup of the day, Carrington Valentine against Matthew Golden. They went head-to-head three times. Valentine blankets Golden on the first one. The second one, a deep ball. Golden makes a really nice adjustment and is able to make the catch. Valentine thought maybe he got pushed a little bit. And then the third one, Jordan Love actually comes over to Golden before the snap, whispers something into his ear, and then Golden runs a nifty little stop route and is able to make the catch. Two to one, I guess, is how you’d score it. But those were two young guys really competing hard. That photographic memory. Weston, you are up in Golden later in practice, too. A 60-yard touchdown catch as well from Jordan Love. So, he put it to good work for me. We also saw live tackling for the first time in this training camp. And one guy that caught my eye was Tyron Hopper, the third round pick from last year. We spent so much time talking about Edin Cooper, but Hopper, when given opportunities last year, made the most of them. He had 11 tackles last year in the preseason game down in Denver. He showed again that when he gets those pads on, he can make them pop. And he was kind of a little bit of a disruptor there on some of those drills. They are so deep at inside backer. And Tyron Hopper is kind of adding into that mix. Guys, today Elton Jenkins took most of the team periods with the other starters. So that’s progress. And I want to tell you a little story about Elton. Going back to the 2020 season, Packers are playing at Indianapolis. Elton as a secondyear man is a starter at left guard. 10 plays in, Cory Lindley goes down. They move Elton to center. Now, this is a secondyear man, starting left guard. He’s had little or no practice at center. Now, the Colts are not stupid. They run every stunt in imaginable right at Elton. Tough stunts for a center to pick up and he is flawless. He played the rest of the game, 50 snaps at center. And it was that point I said to myself, that guy could be a Pro Bowl player at every position in the offensive line. And I still feel that way. I’ll tell you what, there’s been some talk about Elton moving to center and everything like that. The Packers just got better at the center position with Elton there. The money deal, it’ll take care of itself because the Packers, history says, take care of the folks that take care of them. And that is three guys with three things. See you next time.
Wes Hodkiewicz, Mike Spofford, and Larry McCarren share what caught their eye at Tuesday’s training camp practice.
