How Will The Chargers Utilize Justin Herbert This Year? Daniel Jeremiah Discusses | 7/29/25
you uh are at Chargers camp and like we’re seeing Jim Harbaugh make this a Michigan looking offense and they run the ball, resign Slater, they’re, you know, they draft, they draft a a running back, you bring in Naji, uh but their best offensive player is Justin Herbert. It it’s always it’s like JJ McCarthy. I didn’t know how good he was at Michigan because he sort of deemphasized JJ McCarthy. Uh is Jim kind of deemphasizing Justin Herbert? I mean, he had his best year, not statistically, but I think his his quarterback rating was. So, it almost feels like is this Michigan 2.0 for the Chargers? Yeah, I I think you know, look, he protected the football until they got to the the the playoff game. unfortunately turned it over a little bit against the Texans, but um I I think the game plan is, you know, hey, maybe we can major in Clark Kent and minor in Superman and then uh you know, may that’ll keep you fresh and when we need you to kind of bust that out, we can do that. I mean, really, truthfully, it’s what the Chiefs have done with Momes over the last couple years. Yeah. Um hasn’t been really the driving force of that offense. So, I think that’s that’s part of it. But I I was there last year at camp the day that Herbert, I believe it was his foot. He hurt his foot, then he missed a couple weeks uh of practice and then they didn’t really use him much in the run game. Um, but I mean at the practice I was at Dan, you I was seeing like quarterback power and they were they were some designed quarterback runs where it was like, oh my gosh, like if they if they’re willing to do that and Herbert can, you know, add that a little bit of that Josh Allen element to to his game and he’s a big athletic strong guy and you saw with with Andrew Luck and and obviously he had Kaepernick with the with the 49ers. I’m not saying it’s going to be that level of of of volume in terms of of running, but that could be an area of Herbert’s game that they haven’t really tapped into yet. Yeah. I go back to his Rose Bowl performance and I mean, his legs stood out to me when he was at Oregon in that game and I don’t know where coaches stand on having my quarterback run. um you kind of hold your breath when Josh Allen runs because he’s not running necessarily away from you whereas Lamar and Kyler and some of those guys are avoiding contact. Um can you I I mean I would try to utilize Justin Herbert the way they do Josh Allen. I just wouldn’t have him take on defenders like Josh does. Yeah, I mean that would be preferable not to initiate contact which Josh likes to do. I I I mean for for the first couple years he was in the league and doing all the Charger games, I would always go down the field for warm-ups and I’d always get a chance to talk with the opposing GM and other personnel buddies and they would all say the same thing, Dan. It was just like, good night. I had no idea how big Justin Herbert is. Like he is huge and it’s not not much difference between him and Josh Allen size-wise. They are both big, strong, sturdy guys. So, I don’t think it’s something you want to do 10 times a game. But, you know, having that element even even on zone reads, Dan, just having the threat of him as someone who could pull the ball. Yeah. Um, now you’ve got Omar and Hampton who is big and explosive. Um, and he can help the run game even if he’s not necessarily carrying

Justin is my QB ❤️
I think they will have him hand off and throw the football, very rarely will he run the ball
I think we can agree Jim is one of the two best coaches in AFC named Harbaugh 🤔
Among top QBs J.H. definitely better than J.H. and if you disagree you are just wrong 😮😅
Herbert broke every passing record possible his first 3 years, but couldn’t make the playoffs. Now he’s making the playoffs but not putting up video game stats. But he’s had 3 head coaches in 5 years. Once he finds stability (which he’s getting with harbaugh) he will get better each year
His quarterback rating wasn’t that much better. Maybe a sliver better. He never had a lot of interceptions. Hope they use him a lot this year.
