I got a hard one and I got an easy one. I’m Mike Fisher, your trusty investor reporter on the subject of your Dallas Cowboys. This is the Fishbowl and the Fish Report. Get in, get on, be good. So, this was a day for Stephen Jones to do some media stuff. uh and he uh he hung around with one our old friends at 1053 the fan and it was gold not in terms of the brilliant things he said but in terms of the headlines that are going to result from it. Let’s start with Nate Thomas. And one of the things uh as I hope you guys know after you’ve been with me for all these years here, when you’re wrong, you’re wrong. Just say it. I’ve been wrong. I’ve been wrong three times in my life. I won’t go there. Every time I do that joke, Marcia goes, “Are you counting me as one of your wrongs?” And she’s got a great point. So, I’ve been discussing ever since Tyler Gayton got hurt a little bit, hurt a lot, and then hurt medium. Awesome Richards is the guy. Awesome Richards, right? Put him at left tackle and let’s roll. You don’t have to change. You don’t have to move guys positions. You don’t have to No. Let’s go with Nate Thomas. And that’s kind of been echoed now throughout the organization. Nate Thomas is the guy and Steven said it. I believe Shotti mentioned him too. So, by the way, that doesn’t preclude something else that we’re going to get to, but um who knew? Everything’s fine with Nate Thomas. Which leads us to number two. Wait now. Who? Do what now? As Jimmy Johnson used to say, uh, do what now? Seventh round pick from 2024. Seventh round pick. Great to catch you live. How is Blue at Pax Protection? That’s where Zeke was still really good. Yeah. Uh I’m gonna Let’s call uh Jaydon Blue a tryhard guy so far in pass protection. He’s not big enough to be that guy. Um, but that lazy thing is dead. He’s a tryhard guy there. Cowboys fan 65. Move Tyler over to left tackle again. I don’t think so. They’re talking so much about Nate Thomas who I mean I didn’t I didn’t have on my radar. Douglas Sloan, awesome Richards or Nate Thomas against that Philly pass rush. How about we sw Yeah, I get it. And then in the scenario of switching Tyler Smith out, put Hoffman at left guard. There is also this. What if Gayton’s okay in four weeks? [Music] Alabama. Let’s see if Zack Martin will unretire. No. But you know what? Nobody’s laughing at your idea because I have seen smart people on Twitter going call Tyron. No, they don’t want to do that. This is football. It that that’s you can there there’s sports that you can do that in. This this ain’t that. Oh, by the way, he’s from Louisiana. Oh, like LSU? No, Nate Thomas. He’s from Louisiana. That’s the That’s the name of the school he’s from. So So we’ll see. But um they they they talk about him like he’s a pros pro even though he’s just a kid and only been here a year. That’s your guy. That’s going to be your preseason guy. How about that? Then we’ll see where she goes. So, you won’t know until you ask Tyron. I feel like uh Tyron who’s a friend of Marsha’s. I feel like we know. Item three. Uh Stephen talking with 1053 the fan uh on the and the question was you know do you guys drag out contracts or why do you guys drag out contracts and he says we don’t drag deals out what Reed Fish we’ve seen quarterbacks get off off the couch on a Tuesday and throw for 300 yards. Joe Flacco. Kiran could do it if he’s in shape. Well, I will tell you this, he’s in shape. I’m not saying he couldn’t do it. My prediction, same with Zack Martin. Zack Martin could do it. The only guy that can’t do it is friend of the show Ron Liry because Ron Liry, who must have played at 300 something, Ron Liry is like 240. So, he couldn’t do it. Stephen. Oh, we don’t drag deals out. We do deals when there’s an opportunity. Sometimes players and agents aren’t ready to blah blah blah. Stephen, your boss admits that you drag them out waiting for the leaves to fall. What are you talking about? And then he adds, I don’t think there’s a pattern here. I you guys know I I I like Stephen. I’m friendly with Stephen. I have a fondness for him. You know my feelings about the Jones family. I think Stephen is a very bright guy and I I I think he’s a good guy. But he doesn’t come across that way when he does this. Oh, there’s no pattern here. But your dad says there is and he’s your boss. The idea of the Cowboys moving slowly on big contracts with their own superstars is a pattern 100%. Doesn’t mean they do it every time and it doesn’t even mean it’s wrong. But now we’re pretending they don’t even do it. Uh Cowboys have signed the quarterback Christian Matthew, 6’2 quarterback. They cut uh Kelvin Harmon, the wide receiver. And of course, they bring in Christian Matthew, not just because of the diggs issue or the Rella issue. But um Kayn Carson now is a little banged up. So in comes Christian Matthew and uh we’ll get a chance to see what he’s got. 6’2 quarterback played with the Bears. Item five, back to Stephen. The subject comes up on Digs and this little spitten match that they have with him. Now, I said a couple days ago that given that Jerry said I saw him out there, uh Mr. uh Mr. M. I saw uh I saw Diggs, old Trey, uh he’s helping the younger players. We need that from him. need his leadership and uh I’m counting on him when he’s going to be out there. We’ll be counting on him big time. Great. The end. Steven’s asked about the same topic and dog gone it, Stephen, there’s an opportunity for you to say, you know what, we got a contract. We got a good contract with a great player, dude. That’s all I got to say. Mark P, I got a Substack email from Fish and there’s a picture of Fish at training camp looking as jacked as Dwayne Johnson. Yeah, I’m trying to catch up with Solomon Thomas. William Alexander, Uncle Fish Premium. I agree with Stephen with Digs though. Fish, that’s okay. You can question digs his leadership, his intensity, his rehab. Do it anything you want. But why would he do it? They already did it. It’s It’s done. Why do we keep having to go there? You ever been in an argument with your wife? Once it’s done, drop it. Joey asks a great question. Are we worried about Digs’s feelings? Yes, we are. Why? Because I was standing there. Was it San Francisco when he came up the tunnel and and found Mike Leslie of Channel 8 and started accosting him verbally because Mike Leslie had put something negative about his performance on Twitter? So, are we concerned about Trayvon Diggs’s head? Where Trayvon Digs’s head? Because I’ve st I’ve been standing there and watching it. I’m not saying you got to give the guy a hug every day, although that might not be a bad idea. But you’ve already given him an ass whiapon. You got to give him an ass whapon every day. And by the way, let’s say he is the kind of player that you need to give an ass whapon to every day. Then why’d you give him a big contract? You knew him best. Baby him, I don’t know. Hug him. I don’t know. but whip his ass every day from the CEO of the team. There got to be a better way cuz I’m going tell you something. If they’re still worried about him and thinking about him and qu well then then whatever they’re doing isn’t working. Marquita, for any of you who has more knowledge what’s going on with the Cowboys. Wish my name was Fetch. That’s nice of you to say. And again, the number of people who do a great job covering the Cowboys is big. But I do think I bring a perspective after doing this here for 36 years. I do think I have an understanding. Not that I can run a football team, but I’ve seen how it’s been done right. I’ve seen how it’s been done wrong. Uh I do think at my advanced age, understanding how to work with people. I I I think I have some grasp for that. There’s no reason to poke this bear today. Not today. Let him do something wrong first. Item six, George. He loves him some Cowboys. He said, “I’ve been watching the Cowboys for years. I’ve always wanted them back. in the Super Bowl. He says this to 1053 the fan. That’s why they’re legendary. George, you’re on to something. And then he’s asked about making Dallas your permanent home, which is very clever. Herb Tap, it’s called the carrot and the stick on Trayvon. And I’ve discussed that a great deal, but Herbit’s already there. Herb, they already did it. And he already did it. He has now gone public multiple times saying, “Don’t put me on pup. I can be back in week one. That’s the carrot. That’s the stick. Leave it alone. It’s done.” If you’re a parent, tell me you know what I’m talking about. Nate, do your dishes. Tony, brush your teeth. Nate, do your dishes. Tony, brush your teeth. Dad, I’m doing the dishes. Great. Tony, I’m brushing my teeth. Great. I told you to brush your teeth and do the dishes. They’re doing it. George, you want to be here permanently? I sure do. Most definitely. I’ve watched this team a long time. I’m into the camaraderie here. The Cowboys known for the Super Bowl. If they weren’t known for that, nobody’ care about the Cowboys. I don’t know if that’s true, but I get his point. And he talked about the camaraderie with his fans. With you, with the fans, Kurt S, are the Cowboys going to use the curtains to block the Sun this season? No. I mean, that’s a pretty I don’t know that. I just know it. Uh, too stubborn. Jerry’s too stubborn on that. He He He’s His hand is in the cookie jar on that one. And he’s just gonna leave his hand in the cookie jar and just kind of go, I don’t know what you’re talking about. What do you mean? What cookie jar? What hand? What? H uh what? What curtains? It’s like a top secret around here that I keep trying to tell people for since they built the stadium. They have curtains. Why did Jerry build it? They have curtain. They They don’t The sun doesn’t need to come through the building that way. So, the easy signing is Will Hernandez who announced today, I’ve got a clean bill of health. And we’ve talked a lot about this. Will Hernandez big and thick UT Texas roots. Cowboys loved him in the draft. He was a second round Giants draft pick. Injury issues. Goes to Carolina. Doesn’t quite work out. He’s available. I’m not. Stephen said something about the the cap and the signing and he said, you know, I you know, why spend an extra $5 million for a player that’s not good enough just for to make get attention? That’s not what we’re saying. I’m not saying that. I’m saying spend $5 million on a good player. Not an extra $5 million on a bad player. Stephen, you’re you’re pulling a red herring on me. You’re pulling a red herring on the fish. Very nautical. very seaorthy. I don’t I have no idea what Will Hernandez wants for a contract. Make that call, Vinnie. He just got cleared. I just said just got medical clearance. That is the easy call. You call Will Hernandez. And call Will Hernandez because he replaces a starter. I don’t know about that. call Will Hernandez to replace Rob Jones for the next three months. Deal. Done. If if if the money’s right. And Stephen, I’m not telling you, you know, he you you want to pay him three and he asked for eight. That’s the 5 million extra you’re talking about. Okay. Don’t do it. What’s he want? Got to make the call. Easy one. Harder call. Item seven, the weird and freaky Christian Wilkins. We told you the other day there’s something else going on there. MP $2 pitching. When Steven takes over, we’re screwed. The the money’s wrong, the foot’s wrong, the legal entanglement’s wrong, everything. But everything and Christian Wilkins is and I told you he’s a uh the day that broke. I said, “He’s he’s a nasty. He’s nasty.” Well, now there’s other stuff coming out like he’s weird and freaky. And the idea that that they cut him because he tried to kiss one of his teammates on the forehead. It’s probably more than that. It’s probably a lot more than that. JMC, is that any weirder than Charles Haley was in the locker room? I’ve told you the Haley stories from San Francisco. I’ve told you some of the Haley stories here. I don’t know what that, you know, that was 1988. I don’t know what you would do now if you had a Charles Haley doing that in your locker room now where he spots a guy that he can see is um no not going to fight him, you know, a guy that Charles would say is a pencil neck geek and walk over to him and drop his towel and waggle himself in front of him and then start saying, “This guy’s looking at my deep bleed. this guy’s look or walk up to a woman and do it. A woman sports writer. I don’t know what I don’t know. I don’t know what the NFL would do. What would a team do now if your best player did that? Kristen Wilkins didn’t do that. But he did more than just try to kiss a team on the a teammate on the top of his head, right? Quiet, Wyatt. Maybe we need a real freak. Not like that. I’m telling you, he they cut an allp pro player because he tried to kiss a teammate on the top of his head. Cannot be the whole story. Item eight, Don Bland. And uh we told you the other day he said, “Yeah, contract negotiations started.” I’m still seeing people say, “Are they going to pay him like a slot corner or a corner?” I I’m Hey, listen. I just work here. I’m not the preeminent expert on the salary cap or franchise tagging, right? There’s no difference. There’s no there’s no designation for what a slot corner makes. A corner is a corner. So, stop it. It doesn’t matter where they play him. He’s not going to get paid less if he plays in the slot. If he makes plays from wherever, he’ll play more. He’ll get paid more. Item nine, uh, Clayton Adams, too early, he says, to think about moving Tyler Smith to left tackle. And let me correct him. It’s not too early to think about it, but smartly for the new offensive coordinator here, it’s too early to talk about it. They are thinking about it, but he smartly chooses to not talk about it. And finally, item 10. Tuesday the 19th, they’re doing training camp here at the Star right there. Wednesday the 20th doing training camp here at the Star right there. Happy birthday to Dak Prescott.
