Could the Edmonton Oilers Benefit From NHL Rule Changes
What NHL opinion will have you like this? We’ll share ours in a little bit. Um, but there was a bunch of there were some really really good ones going around and then there were some that people definitely missed the boat on what it’s supposed to be. Like I saw our boy Frank said allowing the teams the ice the puck after committing an infraction makes no sense. I have had that take for I remember it was one of the first like somewhat viral clips I had when I started working at the nation. It was me saying that because it really does make no sense how you commit an infraction and the sport is like immediately here. It’s like such a Canadian play way to be like yes you tripped him that’s two minutes in the box. You can ice the puck though. Yeah. Like we’ll just we’ll forget about that one rule. That’s a rule all the other time. It’d be like in the NFL if you know the defense went offside and then players were allowed to like commit offensive pass interference or the reverse of that. If if the offensive team went offside is like you know what defense you can just grab them just play however you want. Like Yeah. It’s weird that you commit an infraction and then get like a little treat, a little bonus to make your life a little easier. Yeah. I don’t love it because it if you if it was the opposite, you would probably get a lot more goals as well. You would get a lot more goals. A lot more goals. It would it would increase scoring without like fundamentally changing the game. It would also probably make for like you wanting to have some more finesse players available on your PK because you can’t just have guys who hammer it around the glass. You would need guys who can chip it high and out of the zone. I also think from like a younger age level, it would develop better puck skills for you. Totally. Cuz I think USA hockeyy’s done this at the youth level. A lot of um a lot of tournaments you go to in the US for like just say US hockey development camps for example, they will have stuff like that where they’ll put in certain rules where like you can’t change if the other team has the park or like yeah ice in the park stuff like that. It’s a good way to just kind of keep people thinking about the game rather than just like okay now I just have to hit this as hard as I can down the ice. Yeah. Um Sean said the guys on the PK would be absolutely exhausted but I do like it. Joe says PK percentage would tank. Absolutely. Um it would, but again, it would be in the name of getting scoring up, which granted, I don’t actually think scoring’s in a bad spot right now in the NHL. Like save percentage is down, goals per game, I think, is generally up. So, and also too, like I think people are exaggerating how much the puck actually gets iced. Like a lot of times like guys have enough time to to ice a puck, but also too, they would have just as much time to just like chip it up. Yeah. I would love to like see how many scenarios where like the putt going down the ice is the result of a shot that missed the net, a block shot that ricochets out or a scenario that’s a good point by you where like yes a guy did ice it but did he have time to like take five steps up and then just chip it softly like it happens it happens a lot and I think the refs would become how do you say more lenient to it too like you said if a guy blocks a puck and it goes all the way down the ice whatever it may be. Um, Aaron, if you want to flash up the little image again, cuz I do want the chat, YouTube chat, and I see a couple of you dropping them in. I want your kind of like hot takes. It can be Oilers related, it can be NHL related. I got a couple that are just like generally fandom related as well. Um, so Liam and I are going to share ours in a bit, but I do think there were a few people that answered this thing who like totally missed the boat on on what it’s supposed to be, which isn’t surprising. No, not surprising at all. Um, but some of the quote tweets were like, um, okay, this one from Ross Lipton. If a penalty continues through intermission, the opening faceoff should be in the offensive zone for the team on the power play. I mean, how often does that happen? Like once every eight games there’s a power play that continues in the next period. Like that one was whatever. Um, I saw one that was like players should have to wear neck guards. I’m like, who that’s not going to have the knives out at your throat in like I think players should wear Yeah. ironically. I think players should wear neck guards. like, uh, all right. Um, I saw one being like, if you have more than one favorite team, like whatever. Eh, yes and no. You can have other teams you enjoy watching. I always hate that stuff. Whereas when people are like, “Oh, you wear another man’s name on your back.” I hate that one. Some people go to the damn game. Yeah. And like also, if your team sucks. Yeah. If your team stinks, let’s say right now you’re a San Jose Sharks fan and you know you’re not going to be good for the next few years and this year during the playoffs you’re like, “Man, I think the Montreal Canadians were a lot of fun to watch and next year you want to watch Montreal Canadians games and be like, I kind of want them to win. Just watch them. Just watch them.” Um Aaron said, “Not knifeworthy, but I do not understand the point of the goalie trapezoid thing.” Yeah, I think that’s another one where like if if the NHL changed that tomorrow, who argues it? Yeah. No, I don’t even think goalie people would argue it. No, I think it’s a bit of a sill especially to be penalized for it. Like I don’t know. I think it’s just dumb. Like I feel like they could be less harsh on it being like or the goalie touched the cuz Skinner did, didn’t he? In the playoffs that one game like offensive zone draw, no change. Just something like that or just get rid of it. If a goalie wants to go out, it’s at his own risk. Um Craig said teams should be able to pick the dimensions of their home ice between NHL or international size and builds their build their rosters accordingly. That is something like it is wild to think about in baseball. Every park is just different. Yeah. In soccer, especially in England, I know this for sure. Your field just to be has to be a certain area. So you can do a shorter but like fatter. Yeah. So it can be like wider and shorter or longer and short and narrower. Yeah. Which is interesting. Yeah. And like can you imagine the Oilers, they draft McDavid and they’re like, “Oh shit.” Mhm. We’re playing on international ice next year. and the Oilers just have more space. It would be cool to create like more of a true home ice advantage, but I do think it’ll obviously never happen. Yeah, cuz in baseball is there like obviously everyone’s different like regulations. Is there Yeah. Like what is it? Cuz the I think people the green monster is one thing is Oh, but it’s also like not that far. Like it’s that a lot of guys should be able to hit it over, you know? Also, I think if a team were to build a stadium tomorrow, like if whatever pick a team was or an expansion team in baseball was like, “We’re putting a green monster in baseball probably be like, “No, you’re not.” Yeah. Fenway is kind of allowed to do that because it’s 100 years old. What’s up, nation citizens? The NHL is long overdue for a few bold changes — and we’re here to throw some hot takes into the fire. Should the league switch to international-sized rinks to open up the game and boost skill? And why is icing allowed on the penalty kill when it’s punished at even strength? We dive into these controversial ideas and debate whether they’d actually improve the on-ice product.
Tyler and Liam go back and forth on some of the NHL’s rules, the resistance to innovation, and what the game could look like if the league wasn’t afraid to shake things up. From rink dimensions to special teams strategy nothing is off limits.
Is there any NHL rule you’d like changed?

ice surface change would be awesome, but if you go to international size you would lose a lot of seating, less revenue.
The trapezoid was there to help bring up the goals.
Goalies got really good at handling it, and killing dumps ( which is lame imo )
I’m Diehard Oilers fan. But if we have no Canadian team playing I may watch a favourite American team but no one team in particular. I did get a Minnesota Wild shirt as a gift but WTF ?
