Miami Dolphins Training Camp Winners & Losers (So Far) Ft. Chop Robinson, Willie Gay & Quinn Ewers
[Music] Winners and losers. We are through the first week of Miami Dolphins training camp and I want to take a quick pause to look at who’s been performing well and who has struggled. I am Nick Rolloff. This is Dolphins Today by Chat Sports. And before we get into my list of winners and losers, help out the channel cuz we want to continue to grow as we get closer to football season. Best way to help us grow obviously liking, subscribing, but also sharing today’s video. Send it to a friend, a co-orker, a family member. Just post it on Facebook, Twitter, doesn’t matter. The more public engagement we get, the bigger family we can grow here. And with the season vastly approve approaching, I want to get more Dolphins fans together here. So, help us out and share today’s video. The first winner that we have to talk about, Willie Gay Jr., the linebacker who Miami signed in NFL for agency to a one-year deal. They signed him and KJ Brett to replace Anthony Walker Jr. and um David Long Jr. from a year ago at that linebacker position with Tyrell Dodson and Jordan Brooks to be your projected starters. Well, Willie Gay Jr. has something to say about that. He has been the biggest standout through Dolphins training camp week one and it’s without question like so many people have been singing the praises of Willie Gay Jr. and his ability to cover his ability to make some plays in the run game and I got to be honest folks I have him as a starter. I mean yeah we’re getting serious here. I’m putting Willie Gay Jr. as the linebacker two next to Jordan Brooks. And we’ve had Tyrell Dodson as that LB2 the entire off season after they resigned him. But with how well Willie Gay Jr. has performed, I’m making a change. KJ Brittton Dodson could be those backups. And I just like I’m sorry. This is where things stand. Jordan Brooks is your linebacker one without question, but with how well Gay has been playing, I think it’s hard to not have him as a starter. Now, things can change. Obviously, injuries happen. You never know. But if the season was starting tomorrow and we were suiting up against the Colts tomorrow afternoon, I think Willie Gay Jr. would be the first linebacker out there next to Jordan Brooks. Loser. This sucks. Cam Smith, 2023 second round pick out of South Carolina. I think he could be caught. I I I really do. Like with the Dolphins signing Mike Hill, Dolphins signing Jack Jones. Yes, Miami needed to add more to this quarterback room after losing Kendall Fuller and Jaylen Ramsay from a year ago. But Cam Smith has just stunk. He just has. And I think Jack Jones could be that second boundary corner for this football team because he’s come in and made a lot of solid plays early in training camp. And Storm Duck has just been really solid so far for Miami. I might have underestimated Storm Duck. And like I I’ll wear that on the chin. I’ll put my hand up and say I was wrong, but he’s just been solid. Not flashy, not been getting torched, just solid. and Miami could use this solid in their secondary because that’s all they need. If the Dolphins have an average NFL secondary, they will have a top 10 defense because of how good their front seven is with those edge rushers, sealer, Kenneth Grant, Jordan Brooks, and these linebackers. So, you just need a solid secondary. Unfortunately, I don’t think Cam Smith has been that. He has not been good whatsoever. And when I’m looking as on the outlook of this cornerback room, it’s very dependent to me on Kar Coo’s injury. Because if Kater cou is injured for an extended period of time or potentially out for the season, well then that changes if Cam Smith will make this football team. But with Cam Smith not really performing to a high level to where beat reporters are talking about him in a positive direction then I just don’t like keeping him and I would like to say like it’s just the experiment’s over unfortunately. Uber talented athletic guy but he struggled throughout his entire career to this point to stay healthy and when he was on the field last year he was abysmal. Then Cam Smith could be a cut player for Miami. Predict it for me. Will Cam Smith be cut when the roster is trimmed down from 90 to 53? Type Y for yes, type N for no. Let me know your thoughts down in the comments. Winner first round pick from a year ago, Chop Robinson. I mean, this guy I you want to talk about hand up being wrong me with Chop Robinson. And I don’t want to say that I was bad like mad about drafting Chop at 21 a year ago, but I just thought there was a better pick on the board and that was Graham Barton, the interior offensive lineman from Duke. And I mean, not to like try to completely bail myself out here, but I mean our interior offensive line was the worst in football last season. So it would have been probably pretty nice to have a player like Graham Barton. But Chop’s long-term potential is just extraordinary. He was a top five pass rusher in pressures in pass rush grade in pressure win rate. Like this guy was dominant from week eight on last season. He had eight sacks. And when he’s starting to work alongside um Jaylen Phillips and Bradley Chub rather than Shaq or not Sha Barrett, I don’t know why I almost said Shaq Barrett. Alongside um oh Emanuel Agba. Can’t believe I’m spacing on that name. Agba, Ty Bowser, Quinton Bell, like Chop is going to be able to get so much easier looks in one-on-one situations. Like his teammates have noted that this is a defensive player of the year type of guy. Jaylen Phillips said that. I expect a big second year for Chop Robinson. I can’t wait to see what he can bring to the table. I think he could have 12 sacks this year. I really do. Chop is just such a freak athlete. He’s improving his strength, improving his run stopping and edge setting ability. I can’t believe there was a player or not player, a person out there, not going to name names, that said that Chop wasn’t a starter. What? Come on now. Chop’s going to have a major major second season for Miami. Couldn’t be more excited for him. Loser. And it kind of goes handinhand with the first winner of today’s show, Willie Gay Jr. And it’s the Tyrell Dodson. It’s not like Tyrell Dodson is on the roster bubble or anything like that. He’s not going to get cut. He’s going to be on this football team, but I could see him becoming linebacker 4. I don’t think he’s LB2 right now like I originally had him. We were talking a little bit earlier. I think Willie Gay Jr. has surpassed him. And with Dodson, I’ve heard some nice things about KJ Britt and his ability to stop the run. He’s a thumper, man. He’s physical. So, yeah, we resigned Dodson on a two-year$8 million deal, but I am not guaranteeing him being a starter, and I’m not guaranteeing him being a top three linebacker on this um roster. I think we’re going to have to see him give some snaps during the preseason and cement himself as the player we thought we resigned when he played pretty well at the end of last year. more winners and losers to get to, but subscribe to Dolphins today for daily updates on Miami and when the preseason approaches vastly coming. We will be live here on the channel for every preseason Dolphins game and a regular season game as well. So, subscribe and join us here at Dolphins today. Winner Patrick Paul, the secondyear left tackle out of Houston. My oh my, is this a good conversation to be having around this second round pick from 2024. He has been showing out early. We always knew this was a behemoth of a man. This is a 6667 massive human being. He’s just as scary to look at. He’s strong and it has been showcased. He has stonewalled players like Bradley Chub, like Jaylen Phillips, like Quinton Bell in one-on-one reps, in 11 v1 reps. And as soon as the pads went on Tuesday morning, Paul’s impact and excitement level just went up another notch. His footwork, his mechanics, learning behind Terron Armstead, having an off seasonason to get his body right, get his conditioning right, get his mind right. I mean, this is the player that I have a lot of high hopes for this upcoming season, and he changes everything for Miami. I’ve been very open about this. I think if Patrick Paul is an above average, top half left tackle this year, it just elevates the ceiling of this Dolphins football team because he’s replacing Terron Armstead, who was a top five left tackle a year ago. So if you’re able to get him to not be as much as a drop off as Terron Armstead to Paul originally was thought of as and then the improvements on the interior with James Daniels and Jonah Savinia. We’re talking about an offensive line that went that could go from bottom five in 2024 to top 16 top half in 2025. On the other side though, a loser is Larry Borum, who is the backup to Patrick Paul. Larry Borne was signed to a one-year deal in NFL for ANC to be a swing tackle, replace Kendall Lamb from the Chicago Bears. He’s been horrific. Got absolutely dominated one-on ones. Hasn’t performed well whatsoever in team activities. And really, the entire O line has struggled that aren’t starters. Like take away Austin Jackson, take away Savia, James Daniels, Patrick Paul. We start to see the Andrew Meyers. We start to see the Keon Smiths, the Larry Borams, Ryan Hayes. These guys have stuck. They’ve been abused by the Dolphins Dline. And maybe this is a good sign that this Dolphins Dline is deeper than we thought it was with rookies like Jordan Phillips, like Zeke Biggers, like Matt Dickerson coming in after being resigned this past off season. Like there’s two ways to look about it. It can either be this secondary O line unit is horrific or this depth on the Dline isn’t more impressive than we originally thought. I’d like to say it’s the positive with the Dline, but knowing the history of this Dolphins football team, it’s probably the Yol line. And specifically, Larry Borm isn’t a good swing tackle. Like, I know a lot of us got on Kendall Lamb last season, but like Kendall Lamb is solid, man. And I think he will be missed hopefully really not that much. Um, and Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson are able to play all 17 games this year, but we know that’s very hard to do as an offensive lineman. Um, but if Larry Boram has to start, we’re in for an issue. Like him, Iikenberg, like these backups are bad, man. And I know you can’t have elite backup offensive linemen. The only backup offensive lineman I trust is Daniel Bronco. Russy’s guys are bombs. All right, we’re gonna get to a couple winners to close out today’s show, but I want to show how you can become a winner by grabbing this Dolphins Cutoff hoodie right now. It’s on sale for $22 off, usually 55. It’s now on sale for $33. Sizes are running out. I’m not sure how long the sale is going to continue, but if you want to take advantage and grab yours today, go to chatsports.com/miautoff sale. links in the description and comments of today’s video. Like I said, not sure how long this is going to continue to go, so grab yours. Now, Kendall Sheffield has surprised me a little bit here. A depth corner has had more reps at training camp than anticipated due to BJ Adams being in wow couldn’t say concussion protocol. Um, RD Burns tearing his ACL, Kater Coo going down with injury. Well, some of these guys that probably weren’t going to get as many reps as anticipated, well, they’re getting them. And Kendall Sheffield’s been making some plays on Tuesday’s practice since pads, he had a sack coming off the edge as a blitzer. We know Anthony Weaver really likes to utilize his corners blitzing and bring dropping out a linebacker or an edge at times to confuse the offense and offensive line. and Sheffield showcased some speed. He’s had a couple nice PBUS as well throughout the first week of training camp. I’m not gonna say he’s making this roster with absolute certainty, but he went from someone I just was foregone conclusion being cut to, well, maybe he will have a chance to make this roster depending on how some injuries shake out and where other players stand. The final winner that we’re talking about on today’s show is no one other than the QB3, the seventh round pick out of Texas, Quinn Eers. I think he has done an excellent job showcasing his talent in the first week of the year. And this QB room only has three people on it. Tua, Zack, and Quinn. They released um Brett Gabbert when they made a signing last week to bring in more cornerback dep. Now you are going to see Zach Wilson and Quinn Eers really dominate most of the snaps in the preseason. And I can’t wait to see Quinn perform because it’s one thing to play well in training camp when you can’t hit the quarterbacks and you’re doing scripted plays. You’re doing red zone work. Quinn has been awesome so far in these scripted plays, in the red zone work against the second and third units, but you have to see how he’s going to be able to handle when NFL players are actually allowed to hit him in in preeason. And I’m excited to see how he compares to the veteran Miami sign, Zach Wilson. Like those two are going to be battling it out all preseason long for that QB2 spot. Zach Wilson has the heavy heavy edge, but if Quinn balls out, he could absolutely be the QB2. I wouldn’t put that past him. And that’s why I’ll ask you this question to round out today’s show. Make the call. Can Quinn Eers become the QB2 for the Miami Dolphins? If you think he can, well, type those twos. If you think he’s going to be QB3, well, type those threes. Get down in the comments section and let me know your thoughts. And man, I’m excited because the first preseason game for the fins, Sunday, a August 10th against the Chicago Bears. I’ll be fired up for that one. We’ll have a joint practice earlier that week against the Bears. But boy oh boy, we’ll be live on the channel for that first preseason game watching Dolphins football for the first time. Couldn’t be more excited for it. So, make sure you subscribe because we’re gonna continue to bring you daily content on this football team live for every single Dolphins game. The D is gonna stink!
Ill be at Soldier Field for our opening preseason game, can't wait to see our boys play in person!
They do need to cut cam smith not inshape and always hurt
I hate to say it but you're pimping your podcast every day about number of likes and dislikes and surveys and blah blah blah really distracts from the meat of your news
Yes
Armstead was injured so much being a top player didn't do much for the team.
Kader has already been ruled out for the year
I hope Cam Smith gets cut but I doubt it will happen.
I doubt Ewers will be QB2 unless Tua gets hurt.
Chop has been great.
Willie Gay Jr. is tough. It is unsettling that an older LB can come in here and dominate though.
I think the backup O-line is terrible and our backup D-Line is really good.
Y
Rolly, I thought they reached a little on Chop last year too. His first move and ability to line up almost on top of the slot and still pressure the pocket, that is special and I didn't see it in his college tape. Maybe they didn't use him the same way.
The more money you make as well
Loser: Cam Smith…I am shocked, what a surprise. I may have a heart attack and die from that surprise. Guy couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag. Just get rid of him already Dolphins, I am tired of hearing about the disappointment.
2. Zach Wilson is garbage. I don’t know why Miami even signed him to the QB roster. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
2
Quinn Ewers will be the Future Quarterback . He has the arm and touch. Hill can run as far as he likes and Ewers can hit him in stride, the same for Waddle
Good Afternoon Phinz Up
Storm Duck = Kendall Fuller
Kader Kohou is out for the season bro lol
