Padres Acquire Closer Mason Miller from Athletics in Deal for No. 3 MLB Prospect

We got breaking news out of Major League Baseball where the San Diego Padres’s have acquired closer Mason Miller in a trade with the Athletics. That’s been confirmed by our very own Jim Bowden. The Padres’s will also be receiving lefty starter JP Sears in a deal. And this one is earthshattering for both sides. And for more on this trade here, we’re going to bring in our very own Jim Bowden to break all this down. This news coming in. And Jim, your impression on both sides of this deal? Uh Brennan, I think it’s a great trade for both sides and both teams are in completely different situations. So for the Padres’s, they’re trying to win a World Series right now. They’ve committed all the long-term money to Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogards and their window to win is now and they can’t wait. And so they make this deal. Mason Miller obviously impact young closer that’s controllable. JP Sears controllable starting pitcher. So Miller goes to the back end. Sears to the rotation. So, I think it’s a really good move for them to win now. But on the other side for the Athletics, I got to be honest with you, in the long run, they’ll end up winning the deal because Leo Deere, the shortstop they acquired, who’s a teenager, he’s a switch hitter, is one of the top two or three prospects in the entire sport. He’s got a chance really to be a star and actually brings back some memories uh perhaps of when the Padres’s traded James Wood to the Nationals or when they acquired Fernando Tatis Jr. from the White Socks because this is a young player that has that type of upside. So, I think it’s going to be a deal that works really well for San Diego in the short run, but more importantly for the athletics in the long run. By the way, looking at his numbers, hitting 248, six homers this year and number three when it comes to the MLB pipeline. So, as you said, the future’s bright for him. Want to go back to the Padres’s though because they’re probably not done. What’s next for AJ Prowler? Well, that’s a great question because this trade absolutely screams that the next thing they’re going to do is trade their closer, Robert Suarez, who will be a free agent at the end of the year now that you’ve replaced him with Mason Miller. And then they’re going to probably trade Dylan Cease, the starting pitcher, who’s a free agent at the end of the year because you’ve just replaced him with JP Sears. So, this sounds to me like this is just going to be the beginning of a flurry of moves by Padres’s president, AJ Prowler. If you’re looking at Mason Miller, uh, we’re assuming that he’s not going to be a closer long term. There may be a chance to start. There’s some stories swirling around there. Yeah, look, Brandon, there’s a lot of teams out there that have been trying to acquire Miller for the last couple of years, not to use him in the same role the Athletics are using him in, but rather they want to make him into a starter. There’s a lot of teams that believe that he can develop into a number one ace type of starting pitcher if developed right now. Miller has tried to start in the past. It didn’t work well. He was one that wanted to be in the bullpen. The Athletics accommodated him, but I think what you’ll see happen is the Padres’s will use him to close this year and then I think you’ll see for next year they’ll probably convert him into a starter. But the one thing we do know, he’s got as good a stuff as anyone in baseball. Hit triple digits consistently, nasty off speed pitches, and has great makeup and character. This is a huge huge pickup for the Padres’s based on this Padres’s pickup here for them. Jim, I have to ask you, does this help them contend there for years to come with the Dodgers in term of that pitching when it comes to Miller and the upside? I mean, I think it helps them continue this run as a contender, right? I’m not saying it’s these are moves that are going to push them past the Dodgers, but in terms of being a postseason threat as a wild card team or being in contention, it expands the window, right? Knowing you’re going to lose Suarez and Cease, that’s a blow for next year, not just this year. So, be able to get those two guys today, Miller and Sears from the Athletics, that allows you to extend the window another year or two. And I think that’s what’s really important about this trade for them. Also, Jim, just to put a bow on it. Henno Suarez, that deals official now to Seattle, of course. So, if you’re the Mariners, you’re very happy because you finally get officially that bat added there with Cal Raleigh. But just your interpretation and reaction to see those two in that lineup. Yeah, look, I think what the Mariners have done is significantly changed the landscape of the American League West. The Astros have been in first place. The Rangers are coming. I think the Mariners trades for both Naylor and Suarez and their pickup of reliever Caleb Ferguson has now put them in a position in my opinion to be the favorites in the West. I also will argue that this is the best chance they’ve had since they’ve been in existence of winning their first world championship. This team is that good. The starting pitching is five deep. Their bullpen has a lights out closer in Munoz. And now you have a lineup top to bottom that is well balanced right and left. They’ve got power, they’ve got speed, they’ve got defense. This is a team to watch here in August and September, which will lead to October, which could be exciting in Seattle. Two bats we can see hit 50. That’s something we will be watching. Jim Bowden, I told you we were going to be busy. No nap time, my friend. Appreciate you with all the breaking news when it comes to everything on the diamond. And take a look at it. The Mariners moving up in the world 16 to1 odds there when it comes to the World Series. Obviously, Suarez has something to do with that and maybe those other key additions. Outside of that, the Dodgers are still the favorite at 220, followed by the Phillies and then the Mets and Yankees as those top three odds to win it

  1. Typical A’s. Miller has 4 years of team control left, but he’s eligible for arbitration after next season. JP Sears is eligible for arbitration after this season. The A’s are known for trading players with years of team control left because they don’t want to pay for their arbitration years. If de Vries pans out he’ll also be traded with 3+ years of team control left. Wash, rinse, repeat.

  2. Reminds me of when they dished Mark McGwire for TJ Mathews, Eric Ludwig and Blake Stein and he proceeded to go ahead and break the single season Homerun record the next year

  3. Oh good the A's got a shortstop to replace their aging future Rookie of the Year shortstop they have now! This is insane they aren't trying to build a dynasty they are only getting guys to replace others before we have to pay them
