MLB LIVE🔴 New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays – Jul 31, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So, just about set now. Our starter in this one, Carlos Rodon. Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surreners a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder number 14. And that misses. And away we go this afternoon. swings through that one out in front that time. One ball, one strike. That clips a corner. Swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt. Up with it. Fires to first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance. Get him out of there and deal with the next guy. Now a chance for Yandi Diaz. And that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. So next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Jonathan Aranda and he grounds one to the right side and foul ball. One out and a runner at second. Swing and a bouncer out to short. Throw to first in time. All right, let’s take a look at the Rays lineup. This team can really pile up the runs, Chris. They’re among the top teams in scoring this year. Yeah, and when you can get a lead and be out in front, it really changes what that opposing manager can do with the bullpen. And on top of that, it helps your own pitching staff. It gives them more margin for error. So instead of pitchers squeezing the ball, trying to throw darts and be perfect, they can relax, let the ball come out of their hands, and pitch effectively. So that offense and the ability to score runs also helps the pitching and the defense. One strike, kicks and fires just off the outside edge. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Dominguez right there to make the grab. And that is that. One left for Tampa. And now the Yankees will see what they can do. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back for more from the Bronx and on the mound for Tampa Bay in this one, Shane Bos. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. We go to the bottom of the first and stepping in for the Yankees, Trent Gisham. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Gisham, the rangy center fielder hitting leadoff in today’s game. A former first round pick back in 2015. And another ball. That one’s in there now. Two balls in a strike. Short hop liner. Handled it short. Walls throws to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Here’s a look at Aaron Boon’s lineup for the Yankees. Had a big part of it. A guy with a great track record. John Carlos Stanton. Y’all, he’s just been a consistent and dominant power threat throughout his career. I mean, over 400 career home runs. I mean, that just doesn’t happen to an average power hitter. This guy’s been elite. And we’ll see as he continues uh if he’s going to make it into Coopertown into the Hall of Fame. Ben Rice stands in now and watches strike one. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit in the dirt. And the count one and two. Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. Bellinger up to hit. Just missed. 10 at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. missed inside with the curb. Clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way. Left that curve ball way up. Next pitch way upstairs. Two outs. Base is empty. This one in the air center field moving under this one and makes the play and that’s out number three. Scoreless after one. Second inning set to go. And stepping in for the Rays, Josh Low. Swinging a foul straight back. Next offering is in for a strike. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. Rodon ready. The O2 on the way. And that one is inside ball one. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch off the outside edge. And now the count is two and two. And a swing and a miss. Now one away. Chris, as we look back at the pitch sequence, he hadn’t seen that curveball at all. How tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet? Yeah, I mean, you’re dialed up for something firm. You never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball. So, you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch. And right there, clearly didn’t see what was coming. Jake Mango batting with one down, takes a strike. Next pitch is outside. One down. Base is empty. That one misses and it’s two and one. Second inning here. No score. That one fouled off. Two and two up the middle into the outfield base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield and now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Tristan Gray next to hit for the Rays. Rodome keeping an eye on him looking for his first big league hit right here. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. swing and a miss and that’s strike two. Mango over at first with one away. Swings through and for the K. He notches strikeout number 150 this season. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Step off, throw to first and he dives back in safely. Rod sets and deals. Swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt and it’s in time for the third out. So that’ll end the inning. The Rays strand just the one. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back in the Bronx, bottom of the inning, and now John Carlos Stanton. He is very much your typical power hitter. I’d say he falls into the three true outcomes category. Well, we’ve seen more and more of that lately. The ability to drive the ball to slug is getting heavily favored over any discipline or strikeout concerns. And the first pitch misses for ball one. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. That clips the zone. One and two. swing and a ball lined out towards center. Pulls it in on the run and there’s a one away. They trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run. And we saw it right there. That’s a player you want patrolling center field. Someone who can attack the ball off the bat. There’s a swing and a try. That one’s back. It’s a ball. He nails one out to right. It’s one- nothing. He ambushed him right there, Singy. Yeah, swinging on that first pitch. And I think losing one over the fence is exactly what he had in mind as well. Power versus power right there. Like two locomotives colliding. Who’s going to win? But a really good job there by the hitter getting the top hand working. Powers that fast ball out of here. Jason Dominguez now at the plate. Back to right. Low has it sized up. They got it for out number two. The third baseman. Ryan McMahon steps to the plate. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. Way back there into the second deck and gone. It’s that ball goodbye. Ryan McMahon leaves the yard. His 17th of the year. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, he went up there O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. So, two down at the plate. Anthony Vulpi. And that’s off the inside edge. And that is ball one. that one to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working and it’s two zip. Back after this on the show back at Yankee Stadium. All set for the start of the inning. Matt th comes up to hit here. Rodone back to work. He was late there. Strike one. I think he was sitting off speed there. In the dirt. And it’s one and two. That one missed. Stays alive. Rodon ready. Here comes hit in the air out to center field. Gisham settles under it. Makes the grab. One away. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. That’s outside and now two and0 looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. That one finds the zone and the count two and one. One out. Base is empty and that’s in the dirt. This one lifted in the air left field. Dominguez makes the grab for the second out. Two outs, space is empty. Now Yandi Diaz doubled in his first AB. and takes low for ball one. And another ball. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. That’s out to center field. Gisham should have this one. And that is that here at New Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the Yankees catcher now. Austin Wells inside. Ball one. That’s a strike. One ball. One strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. And down on strikes he goes. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. And first offering is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. Full. Fast ball. Almost got him there. Well, you’ve got to establish the inside part of the plate early, and that sends a message not just to this hitter, but to the rest of the lineup as well. Fouls one off. Two and two. Sneaks through base head. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single. The first base number 22 Ben Rice stepping in now for the Yankees. Struck out swinging his first time. Breaking ball misses down and away. 10. New York finds it through base hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Love how he let that ball travel. He trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here’s Cody Bellinger. Fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. That misses and that’s ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Gisham the lead runner out at second. Rice over at first with one away. And that’s outside. Two and0. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Good hitters count the 200 just missed. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. The 3-1 fouled off left side. Highf fly ball out to center field under this one. That’s out number two. Up next for the Yankees, the designated hitter, John Carlo. John Carlos Stanton to the plate now. He’s 0 for one. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. The sliding play at short in time. Got him. And that’ll do it. Yank strand a pair. They’re up two nothing. back here in New York. And here is Jonathan Aranda. Jonathan outside low ball one. Well, these Rays as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations and that’s been true again today. Bellinger makes the grab. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Camo batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Chisum pulls it in and there’s two away. And as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. Low takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Two balls, no strikes to count. Just missed. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Next offering in there for a strike. Three balls in a strike. Late on that fast ball. Not sure if he could be in more of a groove. Looks really relaxed. He’s retired seven straight. This guy’s feeling it right now. and down on strikes. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Down in order go the Rays. They trail things here. Two nothing. Back in the Bronx. Here’s the second base, Jazz Chisum Jr. Chisum goes 5′ 11 in 27 years old and he was born in the Bahamas. Robert to right field way back gone. Another homer. Home run number 20 on the year and they tack on to their lead. It’s 3 nothing. Well, baseball gave us jazz and Jazz Chism Jr. gives baseballs the lucky fans with home runs like that. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So digging in Jason Dominguez. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. One ball. No strike. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitched. They’re not trusting their stuff. One away. Now batting third base, Ryan McMahon. The batter now, Ryan McMahon. He’s already homered in this game. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. 1-1. Next offering is in for a strike. Curve in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. just off the inside edge and now filled up. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. And up next for New York, Anthony Vulpi grounded out his first time. Fast for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Just off the inside edge. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Ryan Pepio warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Bole the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Yankees up by three. There’s the strike. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. Two, two, cut on and lifted in the air. Snags it on the run and there’s two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. So a man aboard Austin Wells digs in down struck out looking his first time. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just ensure safety for the fans. Last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit. McMahon off of first with two away. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two on the ground to the left and it goes just fouled. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Out into left center for a line drive base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Back to the top of the lineup. Trent Gisham stepping in now for the Yankees. No balls, one strike. Two on, two outs. Got it. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. We’ve played four. Yankees three. The Rays nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And stepping in is the speedy Jake Mangum. And that’s a strike. Well, these Rays need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. And that’s way high. And a count. Two and one. One strike. Yankees. And a strike. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Now it’s the second baseman, Tristan Gray. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat, getting that first hit at the big league level. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. The Yankees leading by three. And we’re in the top of the fifth. just off the inside edge. Left field. Dominguez moving under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down batting. Two down. Base is empty. Now up for Tampa Bay. Taylor Walls. He’s 0 for one. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point. The short stop takes the ball. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. Strike three. Got him looking on the chain up. Nothing do it for Tampa. They trail it here. Three nothing. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Stepping in the long ball threat, Ben Rice. Fast ball for a strike. 41 and one ball. One, one ball, two strikes. Good eye in that spot in the air right field and it falls. Had a good start to the inning. Nice for the Yankees. And now Kevin Cash out of the dugout and ready to make a move to the bullpen. Shane Bos will depart. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. And the Rays, they go to the bullpen. Ryan Pepio still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Here comes Cody Bellinger for two in this one. Ripped, but it curls foul. Next offering is fouled back. Rice aboard here at first with nobody out. Misses off the inside. It’s a ball in two strikes. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Dice makes the grab and there’s one away. Up next for the Yankees, the designated hitter, John Carlo. Here’s Stanton now. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Ball one there. Swinging a miss at a slider. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch and he chases that one. Two gone. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. Chisum in now takes ball one off the plate. Highf fly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Lake with the swing there. One, two. And that just misses. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Had a good eye there. 3-2, two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Good job to fight that one off. Two outs. This one chopped to first and a foul ball. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. So now two on and two outs. When you go that deep into a bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Jason Dominguez getting ready to hit. There’s the strike. Ground ball right side, but that rolls foul. This one in the air. That is the inning. Top six. Here’s the catcher. Matt th Rodone back to work. That one missing inside. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And another ball right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. And that’s fouled off. Pitch misses there. And now three and one. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball. Something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk and that one hit to first. Takes it himself. Leadoff man retired in the six. So the lineup flips over. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. And first offering is fouled off. The Rays trailing by three. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And a ground ball to first. Rice takes it himself. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Two outs. Base is empty. To the plate now for the Rays is the DH Yandi Diaz. One for two. And that one misses up and in. And it’s one and0. Now this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. And that drops in for a strike. That one is absolutely belted and it hits the fence around first, heading for two. Relay throw to second and he’s safe. It’s a wall ball double. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. So runner at second, two down. So next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Jonathan Aranda. First pitch swinging. 01. top of the zone for a strike and it’s on two. Well, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Swings and misses. Struck him out. So, another good inning for him on the mound. Six shutout innings now. Yankees three, the Rays nothing. Back for more from the Bronx. John Shami with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Ryan McMahon. Yankees. That one ripped right center field. Did one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. Throw cut off to second. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. got a good pitch to drive, stayed short with his backpack to the ball and caught it out front and he stayed long in his follow through. That’s how you split the gap and that’s pretty much a double every time. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Anthony Vulpi the next to hit. Foul ball. You know, these Yankees digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve lost six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. Man at second. Next offering misses down and away. Fights that one away. Still one and two. just misses the mark outside the zone. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Misses off the play. Three and two now. McMahon at second with nobody out. Swinging a miss. Struck him out. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strike out. And there’s one away. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. And here is Austin Wells. His split numbers between June and July there. Let’s go. First pitch misses. One ball. No strike. Next offering is fouled back. Strike three and that’s two in a row. So back-to back strikeouts now and they still haven’t managed to do anything with the leadoff double. Yeah, Bo, you just don’t want to get careless here if you’ve done a really good job to get two outs after that leadoff double as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it’s a non-issue. Back to the top of the Yankee order. Here’s the center fielder, Trent Gisham. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Runner at second. Two down here in the bottom of the sixth. chases the change up in the dirt, gets to it onto first in time. So, the drop third strike doesn’t hurt him. And that’s that. One left for the Yankees, but they lead it three nothing. Top of inning number seven. Here’s the third baseman, Junior Camro. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. Fouled off down the right side. This lineup is having a tough time finding a good rhythm at the plate. Their swings are disjointed, which tells me they’re having issues with pitch recognition. And that one is inside. Next pitch is outside. Activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Tim Hill the left-hander up and throwing. Loisa the right-hander also getting loose. Popped up foul territory behind the play. fakes the grab. One down. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Swaying at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. Now stepping in Jake Mangum. Now snap throw to first. He’s safe. Out towards right center. That’s well struck. dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Lead runner holds at third. So, two runners in scoring position and just one out. Waste no time there. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. And maybe they’ve got something going here. Trying to get back into this one. So, two in scoring position with one out. And stepping in for the Rays, Tristan Gray popped up right side. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Taylor Walls now at the plate. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. First pitch just misses. two in the dirt. Runners hold. Count moves to 2 and 0 with the tying run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. And another ball, Rio. The tying run at the plate. Fast ball in for a strike. And the count is three and one. Strike two. There’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing the run. Low on third. Mangum at second with two gone. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Oh, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Garrick Clevenger. Well, you see the ERA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Rice leading things off and takes a strike. Swing and a miss and he was fooled. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. That’s off the inside corner at a count. One and two. Two strikes. Fights it off. He’ll see another York. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. And now one away. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Puts it away for the out. Quick reactions down there at first and those can be tougher than they look sometimes. So there could be all kinds of weird spin or knuckling action on the baseball. Two down, base is empty. And here is John Carlos Stanton. Cleger, 30 years old now, and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball, born in Kansas. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Ryan Baker warming up for manager Kevin Cash. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball two. Right through there for a strike. That one fouled off. Two and two. Caught him looking for the K. So they make short work of him there. We look ahead to inning number eight. Yankees three. The Rays nothing. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Tim Hill. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year. And that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. And now the catcher for the Rays, Matt Thice. The Rays in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. Need a good at bat out of him right here. Fought off foul. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. tied him up on a fast ball inside. And now the center fielder 0 for three in this one. And there’s the strike. In this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. And that’s in for a strike over two now. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. One, two. You got this. That’s down and in. Two balls, two strikes. In the air, left field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two away now. Two out. Space is empty. Next to hit, Yandi Diaz. York. There’s a strike. No ball. One strike. Two down. Nobody on. And that’s down and away. One ball, two strikes. Outside low. Two and two. Two two. Two down. Nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Next pitch misses way outside. keeps the attack going with a foul ball. Three balls, two strikes to count. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. misses downstairs and that’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Jonathan digs in now. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. That missed by a lot. One and0. Here’s a runcoring opportunity. You definitely got to push something across because it’s not going to get any easier. You get to the ninth, you got a lock down closer ready to come in. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s one and one. Fast ball is outside. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. to the right side, but it kicks foul. Swing and a line drive and a base hit up the middle. And now first and second with two outs. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Tim Hill done for the day. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, the closer summoned from the bullpen, Devin Williams. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Junior Camroero getting ready to hit. Tap foul at the plate. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. in for a strike. And now just one pitch away from surviving the inning. Tying run at the plate. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another and a swinging. That’s a third out. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. And we’re back. Bottom of the eighth. And now Jazz Chisum Jr. There’s the strike. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. That misses and the count is one and two. And they’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. The leftielder. Now the left fielder Jason Dominguez. That’s off the mark. And that is ball one. No strike. Base is empty. One away. The bottom half of the eighth inning. This one high in the air to left center. Mango sizing this one up and there’s two down. Two down. Base is empty. Ryan McMahon stepping in now for the Yankees. He’s already homerred here in this one. And first offering is fouled off a little out front there as he swings through it. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. The next offering misses one and two to count. Throwing the ball well and they need this scoreless inning and relief right here. Been doing a good job keeping him in striking distance. And that skips in the dirt. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Yanks held in check, but they lead it three nothing. All set to start the ninth in this one. And now the right fielder Josh Low. That one way outside. And that’s ball one. And that one clips the corner. Big and bad right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. The one-1 is fouled off. got him looking and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. pulls that one foul. The Rays trailing by three here in the top of the ninth. And that one wrapped foul and that’s in the dirt now. One and two. And that’s outside. That misses. And that’s ball three. Full count. gets a piece and stays alive. Some real good life going through the zone on that one. Headed towards the corner. Reaches for it, but it’s fouled. swing and a miss for the strike out. Now only one out remaining. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. Gray the next to hit takes outside. That one clips the outside corner and it’s one and one. They’re down to their final strike. The Rays down to their final strike on the ground and this should do it. Steps on the bag himself. Ball game. A win on the last day of the month. You close it out with the W. But you want to carry that momentum into the next game. The shut out in this one. Three nothing. Our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
