MLB LIVE🔴 New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays – Jul 31, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
ready for baseball here in New York. And going to the mound in this one for the Yankees, Carlos Rodon. Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. Number 14, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. No, that one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Yandi Diaz now. First pitch and he just misses. Nobody out. Runner at first. There’s a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. And here’s the first baseman, Jonathan Aranda. That gets the top of the zone for a strike. Popped in the air. Left field. Squeezes it and there’s one down. Now a look at Kevin Cash’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays. And something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure. Chris, right now it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout and they want to do the same thing. And before you know it, you start to get base runners on and you get a big hit and all of a sudden you ride that way for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use. Rodon fires. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not got him swinging. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Josh Low next to hit for the Rays. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. York. Two aboard, two outs. Little tardy on that fast ball. Is going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. That one missed. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Rodon sets and deals. Slider misses outside. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. Fast for a strike. First and second, two down. Down looking. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. back in the Bronx and our pitcher in this game, Shane Bos. What do you have on him, Chris? Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Trent Gisham, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Let’s go. That’s a ball. Two count. And there’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Two strikes. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. And there’s one down. And time now to check out the New York Yankees lineup. At the very bottom hitting ninth, Austin Wells. Yeah, definitely someone I always enjoy, you know, when I get a chance to watch him, whether he’s hitting in a game or even taking swings during batting practice. Man, this guy’s always so focused on what he’s doing on that task at hand. He’s got so much attention to detail that when he steps in the box, his success rate is really high. Ben Rice now at the plate as he swings through strike one. Boss, he has a reputation, I don’t know, maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in. You know, you like that in a relief pitcher, but when you have it for a starting pitcher, a guy that can get out of a tight spot, that is pretty valuable. No balls. Two strikes. And you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble. This guy’s earned a longer leash. And because of that, confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there, they know he’ll find his way through it. And a weak ground ball to the left side. Fires across the diamond and that’s an out. A well thrown slider like that one can be tough to get in the air. Good downward break on that one. How much of the ability to do that in a tight spot is the mental approach. I think it’s very much being able to have a laser-like focus, slow everything down, stay right in that moment, pitch to pitch execution and focusing on that catcher’s mid. Cody Bellinger in the box now. No balls in a strike. just missed. That’s off the mark and it’s two and one. and it gets by him. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll make it to second base with two gone. Everything came together for him. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, lifted into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. So, now the Yankees cleanup hitter, John Carlos Stanton. And that one is inside ball one. Well, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two-out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. hit in the air center field makes the catch and that will end the inning. The Yanks leave one scoreless after one. Back in New York now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Jake Mangum. Rodone back to work. Just missed. One ball, no strike up the middle and that chance handled. Leadoff man retired here in the second. showed us right there why he’s considered one of the best middle infielders in the sport. That’s always a tough play going up the middle on the backhand, but what really made this play happen was that quick release, smooth exchange, and that was as smooth as it gets. And it had to be with the wheels going down the line. Digging in Tristan Gray, first pitch doesn’t find the zone. One down, base is empty. Woody Keller making the calls behind home for us today. And Boo, something to keep an eye on is how pitchers utilize the top part of the strike zone. We see a lot more of that in today’s game with pitchers going up there with hard stuff. Keller definitely an umpire that isn’t afraid to call strikes up in that part of the strike zone. Just missed. What about some non nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly. Uh you call the umpire blue, you better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the bat alive. Swings and misses. He notches strike out number 150 this season. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a very hitable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. Just pulled the string on it. Ah, that ends the inning. So, we take a break. Three up, three down for him there. We go to the bottom of inning number two. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. We head to the bottom of the second. Jazz Chisum Jr. now. York. That one fouled off. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Here’s the left fielder, Jason Dominguez. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. in there for a strike at the top of the zone. 02. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. There’s Ryan McMahon now. Yankees. And there’s a ball. Nothing. Nothing here in the bottom of the second. There’s the strike. Good pitch down around the knees. You want to be there all game. In a park like this, a popup sometimes will carry out. Centerfield under it, makes the grab and the inning is over. We’ll move to the third with no score. Well, here we go. Top of the third, scoreless game. Matt th comes up to hit here. Thice getting the started catcher. 29 years old and they traded for him earlier this year. And that one upstairs. Ball one. One ball, one strike. Swings and misses in the count. One and two. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. That one misses. And that’s ball three in the air left field down the line and that’s a foul ball. Here comes a 3-2. Got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. Number 14 in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Top of the third, no score. fast ball for a strike. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box, fake bunt, do something to break it up. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Now this is in the air down the line. Bellinger sizing it up. Makes the grab. Two down. Up next, the designated hitter. Yandi Diaz the next to hit. One for one with a single so far. Lifted in the air right center field. Gisham on the move and he hauls it in. And that is that. Home half of the third coming up. No score. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the shortstop. Anthony Vulpi. first off and it just misses. I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. And the righty deals hard on the ground to first. Arena takes it to the bag and a quick out number one. Austin and stepping in for the Yankees, Austin Wells. And Singy, we already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. New York. One down. Base is empty. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. So the batting order turns over. So the batter now will be Trent Gisham. Fly to center his first time at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Two outs. Ball one there. The 1-1 is fouled off. Two out. Base is empty. Pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes to count. can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. Down in order go to Yankees and we are still scoreless. Back here in New York out of the fourth and now the first baseman Jonathan Aranda. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one and ball one ball. Two balls, one strike. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. And a swing and a miss. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Pretty simple plan of attack on the mound right there, huh? Yeah. Nothing but fast balls. They just kept putting down the number one and letting it fly. I like it. Yeah, me too. And I’d love to hit against that, but of course when you’re in the box, you think he’s bound to change speeds on you at some point. You’re just kind of locked up. Sort of like reverse psychology. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. Bellinger going back on this one on the warning track and holds it in. Josh Low next to hit for the Rays. Struck out looking at his first at bat. That misses the zone. Ball one. Fourth inning underway. No score. Next offering is fouled back. Let’s go. Come on. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. One, two, and down on strikes. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Rays go in order. One, two, three, and we’re still knotted at zero. Back in the Bronx, bottom of the fourth. Here’s a big power thread. Ben Rice. And the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Yankees just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. The 20 is in for a strike. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. The 3-1 ripped on the ground to second on to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. Fast groove right down the middle and usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air, maybe drive it into the gap. And up to the plate comes Cody Bellinger. Doubled his first time up. pitch misses inside. Ball one. Deligi. This is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses and it’s something that you see throughout the game. Sons whose fathers also played the majors. Walls hauls it in. Two away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. John Carlos Stanton at the plate. scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark. For those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, then being on the baseball field, for some it’s pressure for them, they feel that they are right at home. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. So the Yanks go in order. Still no score. We go to the top of the fifth now up for Tampa Bay. Jake Mangum Rodone back to work and that one fouled off. Rodan ready. Here it comes. And a foul ball on the ground right side. Chisum. The throw to first. One away here in the fifth. the second Tristan Gray. Here’s the second base, Tristan Gray. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. Just missed. And that misses and the count is 2 and0. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Next offering in there for a strike. Now two balls in a strike. Hit hard on the ground to short. Slings it across and the first two set down in the top of the fifth. Next to hit, Taylor Walls fly to left his first time. That’s inside. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away on the ground right side. Rays retired in order. Nothing do it for Tampa. Halfway through this one, still no score. We head to the bottom of the fifth and stepping in for the Yankees, Jazz Chisum Jr. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. You know, these Yankees, they’re not going to be happy with the at bats they’ve been having so far. Just one base runner to this point, and it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for them yet. Ball two. Next offering is fouled back. You can do it. Next pitcher slider that misses outside. Really good take especially with two strikes. Swings and misses. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Jason Dominguez stepping in now for the Yankees. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Slap the other way. Foul. One out. Base is empty. That’s to third. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. And he’s going to make it to first. And we’ll see how they score. Well, looked like a pretty routine play. Just couldn’t get it to stick in the glove as he gets tagged with the error. Should have been two outs in the inning, but now they have to work around it and get two more. Brian McMahon steps to the plate. Runner on the go. Pitch misses in. Safe at second. And he easily steals the bag. And the go-ahead run is now in scored position. You know what? I like the aggressiveness right there. It looks like it’s going to be tough to score in this one. Really good pitching so far. So, why not try to put some pressure on him and see if he can steal the bat, get in the scoring position and the one one out, the runner at second. Last half of inning number five. Next offering in there for a strike. Now two and one. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So you really have to execute on the mount. Line drive. That’s a base hit into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. Well, that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over. A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head. That’s what I’m trying to do. Just that approach simple and right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely. And next for New York, Anthony Vulpi grounded out his first time. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Dominguez the runner at third. McMahon at first. One gone. inside. Just missed. Swing and a miss. And that one missed by a ton. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside. Effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. The one two and that’s in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too, too. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. Still two and two after the foul ball. Ruers are at the corners. One away. swing at a ball popped up. Gray brings it in and there are two down. Number 28, Austin. Austin Wells will hit next. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Pitch is in there. Go and swag belted that one. carrying, reaching for it, makes the catch. Yanks strand a pair. Sixth inning coming up. Still nothing on the scoreboard. Back at Yankee Stadium. New inning getting started. And stepping in for the Rays, Matt Thice. That one got close and it’s one and0. And the slider just misses inside. Three balls, no strikes. And there’s the automatic. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Let’s get down here. That one’s in there. 0 and one. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. a little bit high and a count even one and one. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side and there’s one down. Got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick. front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit, and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. At the plate now for the Rays is the DH, Yandi Diaz, one for two. And that one in there at the knees for a strike one. That curve ball’s been a big pitch for him today. He’s been able to get ahead in the count with it. He’s also been able to use it to put guys away. And a swing and a line drive into a right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there are two outs. And here’s the first baseman, Jonathan. For two in this one. And that’s fouled off. Two outs. That’s too low. Now one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away with a go-ahead run at first. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. That one just misses. 3-2, two out, runner on first. A lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Junior Camro would be next. Big bat with a potentially huge opportunity. And ball four to a board. Oh, that could be a big walk in this ball game. Moves the go-ahead run into scoring position. So, some pressure pitches coming up in this next AB. Next to bat will be the Rays four hitter, Junior Camro. His split numbers between June and July there. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Two on, two outs. two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Stays alive. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. and is up to seven strikeouts. Make it six shut out innings for him out there now. No score. Back now in the Bronx. Bottom of the six. Here’s the Yankees leadoff hitter Trent Gisham. First pitch misses. One ball, no strike. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Camo snags it and there’s one down. First base number 22. Now the number two hitter Ben Rice. He’s grounded out a couple of times. in there at the knees and at strike one. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Just off the inside edge. That’s a good miss off the inside part of the plate. You’d much rather miss there than out over the plate where this guy could do some real damage. Let’s go. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. One strike. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. Fouls one off. Two and two. Let’s go. And that one is inside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Three and two. The pitch is outside at ball four. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, runner on at first with one gone. And up next for New York, Cody Bellinger and a popup on the left side of the infield. Walls snags it for the second out. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Now here’s John Carlos Stanton. Stanton measures 6 feet 6 in 245 lbs and he’s usually in the outfield. Today he’s the DH. And another ball. tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Rice leads off first with two down to the inning. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Runner, runner, runner on the go. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So, another good inning for him on the mound. Six shutout innings now and we still have no score. We go to the top of the seventh now up for Tampa Bay. Josh Low. Well, he’s back out there to begin the seventh. That surprises you at all, Chris? Yeah, a little bit. It was a little rough sixth inning there, but his skippers got a lot of confidence in him, but trust me, they will keep a close eye on how he does in this one. And that misses and it’s one and one. Seems like the hitters are struggling with their timing today. Kind of caught in between that sharp fast ball and the nasty slider. I’d like to see him settle on a consistent pitch. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. And a ball evens a count. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Here’s a 2-2. Strike three. Struck him out for the third time today. Well, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Jake Mangum. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. And now the count is even 1-1. And a swing to miss. Just an outstanding job of spinning the baseball, moving it around, doing what he does. BS another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. Gray in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. A swing and a soft liner. Fair ball. makes the turn and heads for second. The throw in and he’s out. Touchdown and that ends the inning. Bottom of the seventh. Now it’s the second baseman Jazz Chisum Jr. edge of the zone. Call the strike and it’s 0 and one inside corner and that’s called a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Fights it off. He’ll see another Andy O2 and a swing and a miss. Strikeout number eight. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. So, up next, Jason Dominguez. That one 95 missed up top. One and0. That one missed. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense, but when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. Been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap. And that one missing low. Rio fast ball for a strike at 95. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. And that gets down into the gap around first and hustling for second. and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count that pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Now that sets up a huge bat in this ball game. And now Kevin Cash out of the dugout and ready to make a move to the bullpen. Shane Bos is done and he was a tough nut to crack. Pretty stingy from start to finish. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Edwinetta will take over here. And this is appearance number 45. So digging in Ryan McMahon check swing called strike. And that one fouled off. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. That just misses at a count one and two. Oh, he’s not afraid to fall into a two strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. And at second outside corner got him looking. Big strike out there as he works to strand that go ahead run at second base. But job’s not done yet. Got to get that last out before you can exhale and get back into the dugout. It’s kind of tough to do with this home crowd applying so much pressure. Anthony Vulpi now at the plate. And that one upstairs. One ball. No strike. That’s in there and the count one and one. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Garrick Clevenger warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Angler the right-hander loosening up as well. Man on second, two down. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. And a swing and a miss. That’s out number three. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Tim Hill. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Walsh up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Gisham settles under it. He’s got it. And there’s one away. And here’s the catcher, Matt Thice. He is struck out. And he is walked. Slider right there. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. Foul ball still 0 and two. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. Ball one. One ball. Two strikes. Fouls it off. Still one and two. And a breaking ball misses outside. That’s down and in. Full count. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Due next. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit. Got him swinging. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Here’s the center fielder. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. New York. Two down. Nobody on the other way. Nice grab. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Mason Angler. They know that he can get a right-hander out, but he’s in position to face a couple of lefties this inning. Here’s the Yankees catcher now, Austin Wells. He’s a big strong guy. can untie this game with one swing. Fouled off. He was late outside low and it’s a ball and a strike. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. That just misses two and one and he chases that one below the zone. And those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Battling here as he fouls it away. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Misses inside and the count’s full. That’s a really good take. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. That one misses. So a lead off walk very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. Now it’s Trent Gisham to the plate. 0 for three in this one. Swinging a foul out of play. Here comes the 01. Just missed. Activity in the bullpen. Garrett Clevenger warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Not even close there. And it’s two and one. Out to center. Settles under it. Makes the catch. And there’s one gone. The first number 22. And now the first baseman, Ben Rice. Well, look out here. He’s going to come up ready to swing in this situation. Check. Swing and he went. Strike one. 01. just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. Well struck deep right field. Way back and out of here. He muscles that one out of here. His 16th homer of the year and they grab the lead in the eighth. It’s two nothing. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. With a low 90s fast, you have to live on the edges and pitch your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. One down and stepping in for the Yankees, Cody Bellinger. One for three. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. 10. Still only one out here in the inning. swing and a miss. One and two. One, two. That one way inside. two runs across in the inning here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Here’s a 2-2. Breaking ball. Miss is down and away. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. And there’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Very gritty. So, a man at first, John Carlos Stanton stepping in now for the Yankees and that one a little below the knees. And that’s ball one. Right through there for a strike. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes strike in there and safe. It’s a stolen base. Runner at second here. One gone. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. moved to second. Bellinger dives back. Man at second. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and now two gone. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days, but when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Mason Angler done for the afternoon. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. They turn things over to the southpaw, Garrick Clevenger. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. Here’s the second baseman, Jazz Chisum Jr. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. Come on, York. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Late in the game, everyone gets a little tighter. Way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. Bellinger stands at second with two gone. He swings and fouls one off two in the dirt but kept close. Tag save. He’s into third with a wild pitch. Well, that right there can be a tough read as a runner on second to see if the ball’s gotten away enough to move to third. You have to be sure you can make it because you’re already in scoring position. Well, he was sure there and now he’s only 90 ft away from scoring. Two outs. Two two just misses with that one. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That one down the line and that’s just fouled to the right side. Gray gets it to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Another look at the long ball for the Yankees. Last chance for the Rays coming up. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Devin Williams. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down win. So, this game has gone the plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Yandi Diaz digs in now. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Williams in his sixth season, 30 years old now. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. Swing and a miss. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. And there’s a foul ball. Oh, great stop. And that’s a great play for the out man. A lot going on on that play. Diving stop to his right in that hole and then gets up and takes it himself. Man, it’s a one-man show. He’s two outs away. Aranda getting ready to hit. There’s a strike. Next offering misses down and away. Falling behind. Two and one. Two balls, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. Set down on strikes and they’re down to their last out. Well, it’s just a great job of playing catch with the catcher. Exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all. Last chance for the Rays and next will be the cleanup hitter. Junior Camero gets the call. Strike one. No balls, one strike. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. They’re down to their final strike. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office. Even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter, not able to get anything going. Williams is just one strike away. Going to count one and two. And there’s a ball. and a swing and a miss. And that is the ball game. A win on the last day of the month. You close it out with a W, but you want to carry that momentum into the next game. Two nothing your final here in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
