Padres trade deadline reaction! Traded DeVries, acquired pitching and offense help

Point to the go my chest and tell them a slam. Hey, get it up. Hit him with strike. From the national anthem to the bottom of the night. I’m in Slamyo. Slamy a slam a slam. Hey, you already know what’s up. What’s that? Another home run. You know ain’t donerophy. All right. What’s up everybody? Welcome to Talking Friars. Hopefully you can hear me here because this is recorded and so hopefully I’m not going to be talking here for like a half hour and then you can’t hear anything that I say. But deadline day, the Padres’s, man, did they make a lot of moves and was my head spinning as I saw these moves happening? It was a long day for me. Uh, and then just seeing all these moves like this morning. Wow, what a whirlwind. I see Mason Miller, Padres’s get Mason Miller and then you see like a minute later, couple minutes later that they give up Leo Dere for Mason Miller and JP Sears. I don’t want to make this just about Mason Miller. Like JP Sears, it’s a controllable pitcher. But I was pissed. I was pissed probably like a lot of Padres’s fans. In fact, I know a lot of Padres’s fans are pissed. Um, since then though, as I’ve kind of cooled down, I have cooled down me being so pissed off about it. Like, at the end of the day, it is about winning baseball games and trying to win the World Series. And we know that starting pitchers don’t go long every time in postseason games. Even when you’re a really good starting pitcher, you’re not going to go seven innings. You’re not going to go six innings. So, if you can have a super bullpen like the Padres’s have, your chances of winning increase. And not only did they better the pitching staff rotation wise, by the way, they didn’t trade cease, they kept Suarez, and the bullpen is the best in baseball in my opinion. Some other teams can, you know, have their thoughts on that, but frankly, I don’t care. Um, they improve the offense as well. And so, you know, could that 24 scoreless inning thing happen again? Yeah. But this is something that AJ Pller can’t control. What he could control to a degree, you need you need the two sides to tango, but what he could control to a degree was who you could go get. Who’s going to be in this lineup? Could could you make an addition to this lineup? And he didn’t just make one, he made multiple additions. He got Ryan O’Harn from the Orioles. He got Raone Lauraniano from the Orioles. and he got Freddy Fine from the Kansas City Royals. I didn’t know very much about Freddy Fine when this happened and I was driving around when this happened and I was like, “All right, I’m not very excited about this move. It’s not a bigname catcher. Um, you look at the numbers as well and it it doesn’t like blow you away. He’s got three homers this year, a 255 average, but he also hasn’t been playing in, you know, every game. He’s got 67 games played. He’s also got someone named Salvador Perez who’s who will probably get some Hall of Fame votes by some when he hangs him up and then there’s that fiveyear period right after those five years are up. He’s probably going to get some Hall of Fame votes. So now to share time with Elias Diaz and that’s who the catcher will be because if you didn’t see this, the Padres’s they designated Martin Maldonado for assignment. I don’t know if another team’s even going to pick him up to be quite honest. so he could just be in El Paso over there with Campy. And they also designated Trenton Brooks for assignment because they had to make room for players. Uh Brandon Lockidge ends up going to the Brewers, the Padres’s. They acquired Nester Cortez. Also shortstop Jorge Canatana, but I’m not going to act like I know who that is, so whatever. But Cortez, he has been dealing with some injuries this season. Um left elbow flexor strain. He was on the 60-day IIL. He’s only had a couple of games this year. So, we’ll see when he can end up actually pitching for the Padres’s, but this could knock Randy Vasquez out. They did have to give up Cole today. They did give up um Ryan Bert today to get Freddy Fine from the Kansas City Royals. But if you’re the Padres’s, you know that you got JP Sears, you got Neester Cortez, you still have Randy Vasquez, you still have Matt Waldron, you still have some guys that can make some starts. And then you get Michael King back. You have Darvis, you have Pavetta, you still have Cease. Like that gives you more than the five starters and you still have some depth to work with. Um, did they give up a bunch of prospects really like talented guys that Padres’s fans, casual Padres’s fans even would know their names because those are the top prospects in the system that you hear on, you know, sports talk radio and all that. Yeah, they did. And we’ll see if it ends up hurting them. But would I rather have my GM sit back and be cautious? Would I rather be Craig Brelo, have that be my GM, or would I rather have my GM, you know, for a lack of a better phrase, have some balls and go make moves and not try to be, oh, this is a big risk. I don’t want to give up my top prospects. They could turn into something and be cheap and that could really help us long term with these big contracts we have. No, he wants to go win right now and he saw that the catching position could use improvement and it’s a little bit improvement, I would say. Um, I to be quite honest, I was not expecting that. I thought the catching position, they were good with that. It was going to be Maldonado Diaz. You get what you can get offensively, but you don’t want to mess with the relationship the catchers have with the pitchers. It’s one of the best pitching staffs in baseball. You just run with it. So, I do applaud AJ for for trying there. And, you know, Maldonado could very well just be in the minor leagues if he if he passes through. He’s not a very good um definitely not a good offensive catcher anymore. Never really was his strong suit, right? I think he had some good seasons with the Astros, but he wasn’t known for that. Um so this could be just like you’re just adding to the catching corpse and could end up being fine. Um but really like the big move obviously was acquiring Mason Miller and JP Sears. You give up Leo Dere. I think also the significant the two significant ones, right? And it was multiple players, the Miller trade and the O’Harn trade where you get two bats, O’Harn and Lauraniano. I’ll get to that here in a second after going through the first big one, but just improving overall and going for it like like I respect AJ for that. I can be pissed off that Dere is no longer a Padre, but a prospect is a is a prospect. You look at the past years, and this is kind of what helped cool me down was take a step back. Look at the prospects that AJ has dealt in years past for bigname guys. You’re trying to win now, right? You go get Sodto and you give up Gore. What has he turned into? Was he an all-star this year? Yeah, but like he was getting floated out there in trade talks and the Padres’s tried to acquire him back actually. Um, but he to me he hasn’t turned out into that ace as of now. Garland Susanna, no idea what’s happening with him. Uh, Robert Hassel could end up being good. James Wood very good. Like out of all of these trades, like James Wood is the one guy that has been like, “Yep, that’s Yeah, that’s gonna that’s going to suck. That would be great to have him.” But again, like I would have done it again because you took the shot. You took the shot to get Juan Sodto. He took it and they couldn’t control that Tatis was going to get suspended in 2022. They thought they were getting him back. And that’s going to be one of the that is one of the biggest whatif whatifs in Padres’s history. What if Fernando was was available to play? They made it to the NLCS without him. What would have happened with him? He’s one of the best players, one of the most talented players in baseball, you know? So, there’s that. You got like Dylan Leco, Robbie Snowing that they gave up, right, to get I think it was Jason Adam last year before the deadline. Maybe maybe one of them was Tanner Scott, I forget, but big prospects, big arms that we thought maybe they’d help the rotation like this year or next year. Well, what if I haven’t heard anything about those guys? One of them probably hurt right now. Like I guarantee you if something was happening good with those guys, I would have heard something about them. haven’t heard any um other moves, you know, this one like Dere, I feel like it’s going to trend towards more like James Wood, not some of these other ones where you don’t hear much about him. I feel like Dere is going to end up being an all-star for the A’s. Um but you’re trying to win baseball games and not just baseball games, but October baseball games. And to do that, having the starting pitcher helps. you know, JB Sears could contribute to that, but to be quite honest, hopefully it’s Pavetta, it’s King, it’s Darvish, and it’s CE because CE is pitching really well going into the playoffs. Could be Sears, though. Um, but obviously the big three does not include JP Sears, and it doesn’t include Dylan CE um if Michael King is healthy, you know. So, if you’re trying to win now, you’re going to have to give up a lot. And when you’re getting a big big talent like Mason Miller and JP Sears, both of those guys controllable. Mason Miller’s controllable for I think four more years or maybe it’s three plus years. JP Sears is controllable for I think three years as well. So it’s not just you’re trading for those talents as rentals. You’re trading for those talents and what they could develop into and be even better than they are. uh specifically JP Sears. Mason Miller is already really good. Um but yeah, like once Mason Miller was acquired, I’m like, don’t trade Robert Suarez. You’re clearly going all in on a bullpen. You don’t trade Robert Suarez. You already gave up the top prospect. Like just deal with it. You know, maybe they were going to trade CE, but I was like trading Swars doesn’t make sense once you acquire Mason Miller. Maybe someone would be like, “No, it actually makes perfect sense because you can now trade scores because Miller will be the closer.” And I was listening to um uh John Janeiro section 1904 his reaction today and he was mentioning like, “Yeah, I made a trade for a reliever that you didn’t really need.” And I’m like, “No, you need all the relievers that you you can get.” Like, I’m not passing on Mason Miller. I prefer that they didn’t include Leo Debris, but you don’t pass on that guy. If you can build a Super Bowl bullpen like this, you do it because your starting pitchers are not going to go long every postseason game. And even if they do, I’d love to have Mason Miller to be able to go out there in the ninth inning or go out there in the biggest lane cuz guess what? He doesn’t even have to pitch the ninth inning. Suarez doesn’t have to pitch the ninth inning. There’s different options. Um, so you know, in a postseason series, if these guys are pitching every day, especially like Mason Miller, let’s say, and doesn’t make the most sense for him to, you know, let’s say they’re down a couple of runs in a postseason game, they’re leading in a series, maybe you have the luxury to go to Suarez instead of Mason Miller. You know, like it regardless of even if the starting pitchers are going a good distance in these postseason games, I will always vouch to have more star superstar relief pitching like Padres’s do. They’ve got f not four horsemen, they’ve got five. And then Wi’s been pretty darn good this year, too. So, I love the bullpen. Like speaking as a Padre fan that wants to win right now, Dere may end up being something, but I think it’s awesome that the Padres’s went all in in this deadline and they’re trying to go win the World Series. They’re trying to go win the NL West. I think it’s a three-game gap right now. Dodgers didn’t do a whole lot. And I know that they’re relying on the talent that they have, the star talent that they have to come back and be healthy. They paid a bunch of money for it. Uh, but like the Padres’s, they made these big additions and you know, some people would say Dodgers, yeah, of course they still have the edge over the Padres’s. I wouldn’t blame you for saying that, but the edge, if the Dodgers still have the edge, the gap between the two teams definitely got smaller here for sure. Um, you know, it goes to the Peter Sidler thing. Honoring Peter Sidler is something that’s come up by people that run the team. Now, you know, you want to honor him by trying to go win and putting the best team together. If they didn’t do this stuff today and they kind of just stood Pat, maybe made a minor move, maybe they acquired Nester Cortez, they acquired uh who’s the catcher? Um Freddy Fine from the Royals. Maybe they did that, but they didn’t go get Mason Miller. didn’t go get uh Rhino Hearn, Raone Lauraniano to add to this lineup. They just did those little moves. Is that honoring Peter Sidler? What would Peter Sidler think about that when you’ve got Manny Machado performing like an MVP caliber player? You’ve got the talent of Tatis healthy. Bogarts, this is probably the could be the best Bogarts that you’re going to get. Arise is a free agent at the end of the year. King’s a free agent at the end of the year. Cease is a free agent at the end of the year. Suarez can leave at the end of the year. You got fans packing the ballpark every single night for this team. Wednesday day games, it doesn’t matter. What would Peter Sidler have done? He would have he he would be smiling so big seeing what AJ did because he’s going for it. That’s who Peter was. And uh I got a little emotional like I’m not going to lie when uh Per was talking to the media today and I think one of those questions was like what what do you think Peter would be would think of what you did today? U and to be quite honest I don’t even like really remember what AJ said, but really what I was focused on was AJ was he had that smile. Um, you could just tell he lit up like this guy’s probably really tired all nighter, I’m sure. Maybe got a couple hours of sleep when the East Coast GMs were probably sleeping too. Um, but this guy’s been working tirelessly to improve this team and now he has to speak to the media. Probably doesn’t want to be doing that, but when a question about Peter comes up, he just lights up. And, you know, he’s kind of as you can tell when AJ’s smiling when he talks. like you can hear the difference and he’s smiling and talking about how Peter would sit in the room and you know give some thoughts on stuff on these deadline days and all that. Um there was just a special and we already knew this but there was a special bond there and I think AJ even when Peter was here he operated like not his job was on the line but like I have nothing to lose. I’m trying to go win a World Series here. So f them prospects, you know, kind of like that. And uh maybe that has grown since Peter has passed. I don’t know. Maybe it’s the same. Um but I’m just proud that AJ hasn’t lost that and like if it has gotten stronger then that’s awesome too. Um obviously wish that Peter was still here. I think he, you know, up there in heaven right now, he is, he has a big smile on his face because he thinks the Padres’s are going to go run down the Dodgers in the NL West and they’re going to go win the World Series because they improve their lineup. They’ve got stars already on this team. They improve the pitching staff. The bullpen’s the best in baseball. You know, obviously has faith in Mike Schill, AJ running the show, like he would be so optimistic about this team. So, um, I don’t want to spend too much time. You’re talking about honoring Peter. I don’t want to spend too much time on what Leo Deere could be. Like I said this morning, I was pissed off like Leo could end up being, you know, short, he was supposed to be shortstop of the future. Lou Bogart’s over and you have Leo come in and be this allstar and, you know, him and Marilyn Tatis as like that young core. I know Tatis will be, you know, like years years older than Leo, but you get the point. Um, but how about we enjoy it? How about how about we enjoy being a World Series contender? Like, who knows if the Padres’s would have been a World Series contender in a couple of years if Dere was ready at that point in time. Would they get as good of a year as Bogarts? Or, you know, Bogarts, this probably could be as, like I just said, could be best year as a Padre. Are they going to get the same production from Manny a couple years down the road? Is Tatis going to be healthy a couple years down the road? Is Michael King going to be on the team in a couple years? You know, the these the talent that they have, you know, Darbish, right? Like, you don’t want to waste that. And prospects are prospects. Prospect, what’s the phrase? Prospects are prospect. I’m probably botching that, but like um they’re prospects for a reason. Like they haven’t proven. And Dere, he could turn out into James Wood. It would be great to have James Wood, but they tried it with Juan Sodto. Some things they couldn’t control happened. They made it to an NLCS, though. Like, that was the best season of my lifetime. I know I’m young and there’s older Padres’s fans um out there that you know they maybe they enjoyed 1998 more because you know made it to the World Series, right? Like those are memories that like what is the point of this, right? It’s to have that optimism that your team can go win, right? To have those great memories of the Padres’s winning games in October. Who knows if they’re going to go deep on a on a run, but I feel like their chances have improved and you just don’t know what was going to happen down the road. So, I’m probably just totally contradicting myself from what I was thinking this morning. But, um, you know, I’d rather have a GM like I just was saying moments ago, like I’d rather have AJ Per as my GM than have Craig Brezlo. like Red Sox fans, you think they’d rather be, you know, in the Padres’s spot right now or in their spot where they disappointed? You’d rather be the Cubs GM have Jed Hoyer be our GM or be or AJ Prowler? Now, I know that the owners have to approve things, right? Like the GM I think Jed Hoyer would probably want to go get these guys, too. You got to have you got to approve it. You know, your owner has to be willing to do it. But, uh, I said this the other night, like, and maybe it’s just how I can relate to AJ, but I like to think of myself as a grinder and just someone who works really hard. And for that to be reflected in the GM that we have, the president of baseball operations. I know a lot of San Dieans work their butts off to have the money to go to Padres’s games and pay for the Padres’s TV package. So to have a GM that works his tail off as hard as AJ does, uh it it’s it’s awesome. It brings me a lot of joy. So um it’s not just AJ. Like I do want to shout out the scouting staff and those that are in the front office. Like I can’t, you know, name every role that played a part in this, but I know that there’s a big group that played a part in this. And I think you got to give props to like the international team too that brought Dere in because without these talent that they traded away, you don’t get these guys. So it really isn’t just the major league staff, not just AJ Prowler. It’s not just uh Chris Kemp, uh you know, scouting directors, but what about those area scouts? What about those international guys that discover these guys and convince them to sign here um through the draft? These guys that get drafted and developed and you can go make a trade. You know, you have Ryan Burgerer who comes up through the system is appealing enough, developed enough, Reds or the Royals are like, “Yeah, we’ll give you Freddy Forine and Freddy Forine could come up with a big hit in October for the podcast, you know.” So, there’s a lot of people that deserve credit here. Um, I’m not going to act like I know all of their names or all of their titles, but I just want them to know if they are listening that I I do appreciate, you know, the work, the days on the road that they’ve they’ve had to go through. Um, time away from family. Uh, it is appreciated and it is it’s recognized. So, thank you to them. Um, but yeah, Mason Miller, just going over the numbers of these guys the Padres’s acquired today and give your thoughts obviously in the comments on YouTube. I’m on social media, Instagram, Twitter, talkingers. Uh, but Mason Miller has a whip just above one, 38 and a third innings. He’s got 59 punch outs this year, 20 saves for a Sacramento team. Uh, 38 games. the RA like it’s not stunningly great, but you go watch this guy pitch and it’s not someone that you want to be facing if you’re an opponent. Like other National League teams are they’re going to have no fun. They’re going to want to get to that starting pitcher early because you’re not going to have fun facing Jeremiah Estrada, Adrien Morome, Jason Adam, Robert Suarez, and Mason Miller. Like the Padres’s could do that in postseason games where all five of all five of those guys pitch and all you need your starter to do is get through four innings and you can win a baseball game like that. We saw the Dodgers last year with the bullpen games. Obviously the Padres’s could do that. It’s not just I know the big five is going to be mentioned a a bunch in this bullpen and I understand why. It’s not just those guys though. Like Wii’s been good. Yuki can be good. Um there’s other talent in this bullpen. So yeah. Um made made their strength even stronger. That’s for sure. And it’s going to be fun watching him pitch. Definitely going to be fun. And it might hurt years down the road, but I respect AJ trying to win. Now then you got JP Sears who the numbers don’t you know they don’t fly off the page and they’re like oh my gosh this guy potential ace but he could turn into it could turn into it. Um, you know, you look at he had that blow up outing, four innings, six earned runs at Cleveland on July 18th, but his last two outings, five innings, one run, four and a third, two runs. Doesn’t look like he’s going deep in a games. He hasn’t been going six innings very much this year. And that was like way beginning of the season when he did that. But with this bullpen, do you need him to be going that long? If he can not just keep you in a game, but you know, go five innings and give up one run like he’s done recently, that could be good enough with this bullpen that the Padres’s have. And and both guys are controllable. Um Mason Miller, let me look up his contract. He is controllable through 2029. So yeah, four plus seasons of Mason Miller. And then JP Sears, he is controllable through 2028. So three plus seasons of control for him. So Dylan Cease leaves, you can have JP Sears maybe be that replacement. Uh somehow maybe they keep cease and it’s King that departs and you can have someone in there. So they didn’t land Sandy Alcantra by the way didn’t even get traded. There were some of these big arms that didn’t even get dealt. Um so for the Padres’s to end up with some starting pitching, you know, Nester Cortez, all right, like had a really good year with the Yankees that one year and uh he’s got the funky windup and I definitely think he could be a fan favorite if he can be healthy. could be like the the Martine Perez for getting to the playoffs last year, you know? So, um I don’t have a ton to add on Nester Cortez, but it’s kind of like, yeah, why not, right? Add that depth, especially when you lost depth with some of these deals today. Um getting Ryan O’Harn, I should probably go actually go through all these moves, not just talk about the players they got, but the actual full move. So the A’s won. They traded Mason Miller to us. Mason Miller and JP Sears. Padres’s traded them Henry Bayz, Ed Warinell Nunees, who had been in the big leagues briefly. Dere and Braden Net. Braden Net was someone that maybe could have helped this team this year, definitely next year. He was one of the Padres’s top prospects. And so the A’s, I think they did really well. you get Dree and Net, you did very well if you’re the A’s. Uh don’t have a ton of fans, but to be open in Las Vegas and to have Dere be like the face of the franchise, like I could totally see that. Um excuse me, sorry about that. But he’s not going to be making much money either, which totally fits the A’s. Um the Brewers by the way. So that trade it was Cortez Canana and Cash the Padres’s Padres’s trade Brandon Lockage to Milwaukee. And I like Lockage. I did. But they still have Bryce Johnson. So not the end of the world there. The Royals traded Freddy Fine to the Padres’s again. Burger and Cole to the Royals. I would have been more irritated with this. Well, this is probably the one to be honest that I’m most irritated about now looking back at it because Bergen and Kak that would be great to have them as depth arms and Kak and Burger both showed like good signs this season. How much of an up that’s my question is how much of an upgrade is Freddy Fine to this Padres’s team at the catching position when if you’re the Padres’s you’re already adding O’Harn and Lauriano you have stars in this lineup is it worth it to get Freddy Fine who you look at his offensive numbers this year it’s not like he was you know crushing this is not anywhere near Cal Rally like let’s be clear he was sharing time at catcher so for the Padres’s to give give away depth. And I know they got Cortez, they got Sears, there is depth still there. I mentioned some of the other names earlier, but there’s I think it’s still a question mark with Darvish and his health. King obviously cease with the inconsistency. Like it would have been nice to still have that depth and I was content on this is what the catching position is going to be. if they were going to upgrade. I wish it was it would have been a little bit better of an offensive upgrade. Um I hope Freddy Fine, you know, ends up coming through with a huge hit in the postseason, but that one it’s kind of like at least I know they gave it to so I I should probably be pissed off about that, right? Uh that that would be the one that I’m most pissed off about, which that definitely was the case this morning. Um, but at least you can justify it with you’re trying to win right now and Mason Miller’s one. That guy will that guy can shut down any hitter in baseball and JP Sears controllable starting pitcher who could slot right into the rotation and you give them those starts and you’re not really like at least I don’t think they will. I don’t think this is going to be a situation where they’re going to have him start and then send him down and then have other guys start. No, I think you give JP Sears one of the rotation spots and you let him go. Um, so I think that one’s more justifiable when you acquire especially someone like Mason Miller than marginal. It is an upgrade, but how much offensively to and he gave away Burger and Colola. Um, they also acquired Will Wagner from the Blue Jays. Not going to act like I know anything about that guy. So, that’s really all I have on that is just to tell you that that was the trade. Brandon Valenuela, who wasn’t going to have a future here anyway, um, he ended up get getting traded to Toronto in that deal. So, there’s that. But uh let’s get to the O’Harn and Lauriano one. Orioles traded O’Harn and Lauraniano and Cash to the Padres for Boston Baitman, Tyson Neighbors, Tanner Smith, Brandon Butterworth, Cobb High Totower, and Victor Figueroa. That is a huge hall for the Orioles. I feel like Neighbors and Baitman, those are names. If you’re probably a little bit more of a c more than a casual Padres’s fan, you know those names. Um, you probably know Cobb High Tower and Butterworth you probably heard because of just how great of a name that is, but like Boston Baitman could be a big-time starter for the Orioles in the future. And they gave him up and Lauraniano O’Harn I want to say, is he controllable? I don’t I could totally be wrong. I should just look it up. Ryan O’Harn. Um, he can play first base and he can DH. He is a free agent after this season, but he’s not making much money. So, rental there. And then Lauriano, I think, is a club option. Yeah, club option next year for like six and a half mil. So he could be the starting left fielder for, you know, rest of this year and next year. This allows the Padres’s to have Gavin Sheets and O’Harn share some time dhing instead of having uh this is just a spot where guys can get their a day off their feet and dh and then you have a Glaciius or not Tyler Wade as much recently but like Bryce Johnson you have someone out there like that now it can be no this is the best lineup that’s what it is and you could have a rise DH to if you want Oh to be playing some first base. I’m not going to act like I know anything about how he plays first base or is he a big upgrade? I don’t know. I do know that he is an upgrade for this offense offensively because this guy has 13 homers on the year. Got a 283 average, 35% better than the rest of the league OPS plus-wise. Um, so left-handed hitter and against righties to stack an order like that where you can have if you want like sheets can go play left field. I don’t think this is going to be a situation where Lauriana would play every single day. He doesn’t have to play every single day. and to be able to put him in there as um you know that guy to come in as a backup um you know if the Padres’s have an advantageous score. Pretty darn good. I don’t know if you guys saw that highlight. I know that was years ago, but that guy has a cannon for an arm. Now you look at his numbers offensively and it’s like, well Ben, maybe he should be playing every day. The guy’s got a 884 OPS or 145 OPS plus. He’s almost hitting 300. like yeah he’s playing every day and okay you know that’s valid point too but like this is the thing it’s it’s options right Gavin Sheets had been struggling and so now if he continues to struggle well you have O’Hart you have Laura to go play left it’s not well we don’t have any other option and they improve the bench right I didn’t want Trenton Brooks to be out there getting the big pinch hit opportunities I know he’s a San Diego kid and I love the story. Wanted him to have success obviously like every San Diego athlete that comes to play in San Diego. I’m biased towards I love them and I want them to be a star. Uh but it just wasn’t working out and I want this team to win. So now you can have Gavin Sheets be your hitter off the bench or oh her or Lauriana and that’s an upgrade right there. It’s an upgrade to the starting lineup and upgrade to the bench acquiring those two guys. So I love it. I’m not attached to any of those prospects that they gave up. Like I was attached to Degree because of everything we’d heard and the clips that I’d seen and all that. Uh, but again, like I do respect AJ Prowler and him wanting to win right now. Prospect. I think that was that’s what the phrase is. Prospects are suspect. I don’t know who said it, but I’ve heard it and it sounds good. But, um, yeah. So, now what could this lineup end up looking like? don’t love giving credit to Jim Russell. Just kidding. But he did put together a lineup earlier today. And it’s Tatis Arise, Machado, Mel Bogart, O’Harn, Lauriano or Sheets, and then Cronorth hitting eight for me catching hitting nine. And you compare that to what the lineup was, which I will actually pull that up right now. the lineup yesterday against the Mets. I mean, they won the game 5 nothing, but this is obviously an upgrade. You had Tatis Rise, Machado, Merrill, Bogart’s, you had Croninworth hitting what is that sixth. You had Jose Glaciius starting with a 570 ops. Sheets and left Maldonado catching with a 204 average and a 572 OPS. Now you go to Freddy Fine catching who still it’s it it’s not that big of an increase but it’s still better. 255 average and 648 OS. It’s still, you know, looking at the ops plus, it’s still 19% below league average, but it’s a little bit of an upgrade. I I don’t love that deal. I hope that Freddy Fine proves me wrong, but um we asked for an upgrade, and I guess that is a little bit of an upgrade. Diaz, I I still would want Diaz to be playing most of the time, especially with the familiarity that he has with the pitching staff. Like when I saw Fine, I was like, “Oh, so he must have much better offensive numbers and slam dunk starting catcher. Maybe he will be, but I’m not super impressed by,” and this is just numbers. I’m not watching Kansas City Royals games. I’m not watching Freddy Fine. I personally couldn’t even um, you know, name him. I didn’t even know he was on the Royals before today to be quite honest. So, I’m totally on the outside looking in on who Freddy Fine is, and I totally understand that. But that lineup, you have a Glacius on the bench, you have potentially Gavin Sheets on the bench, your outfield of Lauriano, Mel Tatis, I mean, heck yeah. And you can have Cronorth hitting eight. Like, what a luxury because I think he’s had a little bit of an underrated season. So overall, the Padres’s, they got better. They’re going for it. They can contend for this NL West, and they can contend for the World Series. I truly do believe that. Um, I’m not going to sit here and say that they’re going to go win the NL West. Like, I need to see it to believe it to be quite honest. But I will say that they’ll be right there and I’ll say that they’re going to be a postseason team. And I don’t know if they’re going to host a wild card series, but I definitely see them getting to the division series and then it could totally be like last year where they are right there with the Dodgers if they face off in the division series. And I think they can beat the Dodgers in a postseason series with this team, the upgrades to the lineup, that bullpen. Yeah, especially with the days off you can get in postseason series. for the podcast audience. I’m nodding my head like, “Yeah, they can do it for sure.” Um, yeah, Lauriano, I did not realize he had that good offensive numbers. A 145 OPS plus 15 bombs. Dude’s got a cannon for an arm. He’s one of those guys that I feel like’s been long rumored to be a Padre and we were just waiting for that day to come and now it’s come. Uh Joey Galla was one of those but that just wasn’t going to happen. Uh I always thought it was going to happen eventually at some point and then it once you know he ended up like really sucking then it was like maybe a minor league deal. I still left open the possibility, but I was like, it’s probably not that. But it felt like every year he was rumored to be uh to be coming to the Padres’s, like the Padres’s could go get that guy as a as a cheap option, you know? So, happy to see Laurian’s on the team. Um, anything else for me to add here? I mean, I could go through uh the moves around baseball, like Carlo’s career to the Astros. I feel bad for Twins fans, family I have in Minnesota. Like, they traded like 10 players. And Buckston was like, I want to be here. I’m going to be a twin the rest of my life. And the twins said, all right, you don’t got teammates now. They’re gonna be calling up a bunch of minor leaguers. Kareah’s gone. Paddock’s gone. Uh, Don Knack’s gone. Joe Ryan, I don’t think they traded. Uh, Rice Lewis is still there, but uh, um, who was the reliever that went to the Dodgers? Brock Stewart, he’s gone. They they clean they almost cleaned house as much as you could. So, that sucks. Um, the Giant, but teams around the Padres’s in the NL, that’s something else I should mention. Debback’s obviously selling. Suarez ended up going to the Mariners. Uh Naylor went to the Mariners. Merryill Kelly, I think he went somewhere. Where did he go? Red Sox or Mel Kelly. I thought I saw that he was traded. Rangers. Sorry. So, they didn’t trade Zack Gallon, but like Yeah, they they’re tearing that apart. the Giants. They I saw they traded uh Yaz to I think Kansas City. That was like a really late one. Came in after the deadline. At least it leaked after the deadline. Um I’m pretty sure they traded more people. Yeah. Uh who was the Dval? I think he went to the Yankees. Um other splashy moves that stood out. I should probably just look up on mob.com. Here we go. Six winners of the deadline. Mariners. Yeah. Astros. Bringing back Korea. Like that’s going to be mustwatch. Phillies got Yan Durant. The Mets also improved their bullpen. They got Cedric Mullins as well. Um yeah, acquired Ryan Hley. The Mets did. Tyler Rogers. Gregory Sodto. Why can’t these teams be American League teams? that all improve like this with their bull. Um, how many I should go through this because the Padres’s are obviously one of the winners here. How many players did the Padres’s give up at this deadline? And I’m not talking about Maldonado and Brooks because they weren’t in trades, but uh, let’s see. Bayz, Nunees, Dere Lockidge, Cole, Burger, that’s seven. Eight on the Will Wagner trade. Valenuela eight. 9 10 11 12 13 14. I think it’s 14 players, unless I’m missing one. 14 players that they gave up today. A lot of them are prospects, but that’s a lot. But again, it goes back to me respecting the Padres’s, respecting AJ to like go out there and be like, “Yeah, I could end up looking like a fool here, but I’m going to go try to win.” Says that A’s are one of the winners. Yeah, because they got Dere, they got Braden Net. Like, Dere could end up being a star. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does. The A’s don’t deserve him, by the way. Just saying. They don’t. All right, that’s what I’ve got. Shout out to the great partners of the show. If you want to go watch some of these new Padres’s players this weekend, check out Gaglin Bros while you’re there at Petco Park. They’re down the third baseline. They’re in the upper deck as well. Uh, great cheese steak fries, best Philly cheese steaks in San Diego. So, go check them out. If you don’t want to wait in the long lines, but long lines mean that it’s very good, which I can back up because I’ve had it very many times. Um, if you don’t want to wait in the long lines, then go earlier. Show up 45 minutes before, half hour before. Don’t show up at game day. Just a dip. Breaking tea. They’ve got Padres’s and Aztec shirts and sweatshirts. I don’t know if you guys saw, but I did tweet out the uh and I think it’s in the a YouTube post as well. The new Mayado breaking tea t-shirt that has been selling off really fast because I get notifications when people use that link to purchase and I got a lot of emails yesterday. So, if you missed that, you can go get it um online breaking tea. Click that link in the description. And if you want to go to one of these Padre games, see some of this new talent. Raone Lauriano, Ryan O’Harn, Mason Miller, maybe close out a game. Don’t know what his walkup music is, but we’ll see. Or walk in music. Um Freddy Fine. Go to see code talking friars. $20 off your first order when you sign up with your email. So, use that to your advantage. trying to help you all out. But yeah, give your thoughts in the comments on YouTube. Podcast listeners, thank you so much for the time as well. You can give your thoughts. Go to YouTube and put your thoughts down or on social media. Want to hear from you. I would say a successful trade deadline for the Padres’s. They got better. They’re a World Series contender. They’re an NLS contender. They are a postseason team. Uh, I think if you’re a Padres’s fan, you are leaving this deadline more excited about the Padres’s than you were 24 hours ago. And Cece is still here. He’s talented still. Suarez is still here, which I love. Like, go all in on that bullpen. I would have been sad if Suarez would have been traded. Uh, so yeah, let’s go.

A.J. Preller was busy on deadline day and I react to it all!

  1. AJ waited until after the draft because they wanted to evaluate its potential. Bottom line, they upgraded all weaknesses and kept Suarez and Cease.

  2. AJ gutted the farm system including the number 3 rated prospect in Major League baseball, WHAT A SURPRISE 😁. If I hear one more person say AJ's going for it this year I'm going to throw up. AJ has gone for it every year since the day he arrived in San Diego. He has ALWAYS gutted the farm system. If they don't win a world series this year this team will be starting it's slide down the drain. They will lose a ton of free agents and ownership is tightening the screws and counting the pennies. This year AJ really had no choice but to do this because of what he's done to this roster. PLEASE DON'T SAY AJ IS GOING FOR IT THIS YEAR. We've only had one player on the Major League roster in 12 years of any substance because he always trades everyone away. Understand the reason why teams need productive young players on their roster is because they're inexpensive and it allows the GM to trade for a player making more money or sign a free agent something AJ is no longer allowed to do. No GM in baseball guts his farm system every season. Can't think of any GM that even guts his farm system once in a while. And every GM holds back a couple prize picks for his own use. I give up because I realize nobody cares. Not surprisingly some are already trying to figure out which street to have the parade on, kind of sounds familiar. I'm not saying don't make any trades at all and hoard all the prospects for yourself, THAT'S AN EXAGGERATION. BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO GUT THE FARM EVERY SINGLE SEASON.

  3. Y’all have the most irrelevant stars in the league! No matter who y’all acquire the locker room is doomed because of the grindless egotistical loozers in it! Typical preller thinking for today and not for tomorrow lmao!

  4. I used to follow Padre prospects over the years but it's pointless now and has been for quite a few years. Who cares who we have on the farm, we will never see them in a Padre uniform.

  5. I'm happy with what AJ Preller did. We have to go all out while Manny is in his prime. Our window is open now and it's time to go for a WS. The Dodgers don't look like the juggernaut we thought they would be. We had huge holes that should be filled now and the bullpen is even stronger! Go Padres!!!

  6. Lmao did you really just say what if tatis played in 2022 as if he was injured lmao the cheater took roids you fool! He’s a bum! He let sd down and he chose to cheat! Ringworms a hell of an illness huh lmfao!!šŸ’šŸŖ±šŸ•ŗšŸ½šŸ¦š

  7. To those who are saying we have no more farm remember they say that every year and then all of a sudden we have enough depth to pull off whatever trades we need plus our 2025 draft class has yet to suit up and they are all signed. While Salas, Fountain, Rodriguez, Pena, tirso, Tears, Mayfield among others are still here too. Did we give up a lot? Yes but if this equals our first championship well worth it. With Miller, Sears, and Fermin being controllable for years and cheap on the payroll we have established big league talent that will contribute to future seasons plus Laureano at 6 mill next year is a steal. Our current roster is more complete than yesterday and our bench finally has a potent bat to pinch hit in late innings for crucial situations. What we should be talking about is who doesn't make the 26 now?

  8. I was glad to see AJ improve the 2025 Padres today, especially since the NL West has quickly become a two-horse race. The prospect haul was STEEP, I was really looking forward to seeing Leo DeVries play for the Padres,…..that won't happen, but a World Series appearance just might. Go Padres!

  9. Your thoughts are good Ben and it’s easy for those like me who value star like prospects to criticize AJ, but if you are going to give up DeVries do you do it for a reliever when your problem is offense and the reason we couldn’t close out the Dodgers was lack of offense

AJ does not understand balance and makes deals for the sake of looking cool and standing out by overpaying

If you trade DeVries you do it for offense that is young and controllable . Why not instead trade for Rogers instead of Mason who could have been acquired without giving up DeVries if you think you need to make your bullpen better

Yes prospects are just prospects and no one really cares about overhyped pitching prospects . Wood and Abrams would look good in a Padres uniform and then we wouldn’t be stuck with Bogsrts contract . Gore Hassell Lesko Snelling are throw in lottery ticket types

DeVries is woods Abram’s type player and we gave him up when we didn’t have to if the goal was improve the bullpen. While I would not have liked it I would have understood doing it to get the right offensive player. If that deal say for a Duran wasn’t there then hold on to your stud prospect

The bullpen is great but it’s the offense that needs help if you want to do more than just make the playoffs . Merrill has regressed and is not doing what he did last year, profar is gone, and we can’t expect Bogarts to be a difference maker . We needed an offensive player and no matter your belief as to the value of a Woods type prospect like DeVries you need to do better than Mason if you are going to give him up.

Hopefully I’m wrong and just another boomer Padre fan who has been watching the Padres basically be bad since Nate Colbert and Winfield as a kid at San Diego Stadium when nobody really came to the games and we bought Loge level seats only to have the ushers move me and my dad to Field or Plaza level seating depending on their mood. It’s a different set up now and how I see things has never lead to a world title but AJ just seems to get it wrong at a high cost .

Maybe this is the year but he overpaid to get the wrong guy .

  10. Even though we gave up a bit, we got even more in return. Just the Miller trade is huge. If Suarez does decide to opt out of his contract and test free agency, we have Miller until 2030! Sears has a lot of potential working with Niebla. 2 solid outfielders, that can switch out, or give Merrill, Tatis a day off! I'm excited for the rest of this season even more than I already was! LFG!

  11. The Padres are dumb. Not only did they give up a top 5 overall prospect for a reliever, they didn't even trade Robert Suarez, who they will lose in 2026. Now I think they will make Miller a starter in 2026, but it is a head scratcher.

  12. I couldn’t be happier, even if de vries turns out to be a beast, you can’t be mad about this. We did not have enough for a World Series realistically and our stars are in their prime NOW! Preller did the right thing for sure. Hopefully we win one this year or next year because I’m tired of waiting. I like big moves in the offseason better than now, to get the team more acclimated, but still. I hope the players fit and have a shot at a championship
