🔴LIVE 🔴St Louis Cardinals VS San Diego Padres / August 1st/ Mlb Tv envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25

Right, just about set to go. Today’s starting pitcher, U Darvish and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And that misses. And now three and 0. Right through there for a strike and a foul ball. Three and two now. And a foul ball. He stays alive. That one misses. So a leadoff walking second leftielder. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. First offering runner goes swing and a miss. Throw there. Safe. St. Louis. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. squeezes it. Grounder tags at second and it comes in too late. He’s up to third on the fly out with one away. Let’s take a look at our lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Fought off foul. No score here, but at third with one down. Come on. You ripped on a line. Merryill right there to make the grab. Runner tags for home. run scores easily and it’s one- nothing. Good piece of hitting right there. He’s thinking off the bat that’s getting down for extra bases, but nice job of the outfielder running it down, making the catch. Still comes away with the sack fly though. RBI. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. Swing and a highfly ball left field. There we go. Sheets puts it away and that’ll do it. So they scratch across a run on no hits, no errors, and no one left on. Onto the bottom of the first, it’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing. Back here with my pal Singi. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michael. What do you have on him? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Fernando Tatiz Jr. leading things off and takes a strike. Tatis goes 6′ 3 in 26 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. The wind and the pitch battling here as he fouls it away and El Nino is stifled for the K. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Luis Arise stands in. That’s in there. That’s strike one. One out. Base is empty. And that one missing low. There’s the strike of the knees to the right side. Contrarus takes it to the bag and the home first moving along quickly today. Two gone as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. Singi, this lineup has the benefit of playing behind a great pitching staff. They’ve got a really low ERA. Yeah. And you know, with that said, there’s not as much pressure on the offense. But make no mistake about it, players want to hit the ball hard and they want to score runs. They want to jog around the bases hitting the ball over the fence. So regardless of how dominant the staff can be, the attitude is we want to go out there and have some fun with the bat. So we’ll see. One big inning in this one, you know, could be all they need, but you’d like to have multiple big innings. Manny Machado in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. There’s the strike. cut on and lifted in the air. Walker gets under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And that is that. Second inning set to go. Now up for St. Louis, Nolan Aronado. St. Louis. Darvish back to work. That one clips the outside corner. That’s strike one. Hard hit to third. Machado throws to first in time. One up, one down. Batting six, catcher number 63. And now the Cardinal catcher, Johel Poso. Padre, that’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. Darvish, not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. One of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. Ball one there. He moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity and because of that he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. It seems like this type of is well exactly when teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a stat sheet, you might overlook him. Got him swinging. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Jordan Walker stands in now and watches strike one. Two outs. That’s inside. San Diego. That’s towards center. There you go, baby. Merryill makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Offense held in check there. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing. Bottom half of inning number two and now Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill late swing fouled to the left. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Eric Summersgill, our plate umpire. One thing to watch out for, Boog, is what side of the plate Summers Gill might be favoring. He usually sets up at an angle. Pitchers sometimes will try to figure that out early so they can attack that spot and get as many strike calls as possible. That was pretty nasty. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. Hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely, but you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after him. Xander Bogarts stands in here. tried to hold back his swing there, but went around. That’s a one knee high. That’s in for a strike. That’s to third. Aronado sends it across to first and that quickly. Two away. Batting six, second baseman Jake Croninworth. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Let’s go. Just missed. Two outs. Base is empty. Swinging a foul out of play. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Falling behind. Two and one. That one at the knees for a strike. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Everything came together for him. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. Let’s go. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. So that’s two straight two out hits. First pitch swing in. Went up there with a plan to be aggressive. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. First and second, two outs. Next for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets outside low and it’s one and0. Two aboard, two outs. Next offering is in for a strike. Hit hard. Should be extra bases. Here comes Croninworth around third. He scores to tie it up. Glaciius rounds third headed for the plate. He scores and they have the lead. Gets the job done as he brings home a pair. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. So runner at second, two down. Martine Maldonado up to hit. check swing and he went and that is strike one. And foul ball. Here’s the O2. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Scott makes the play and that is the inning. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double and it’s now a two-1 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here in San Diego onto the third inning and stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay-Z. That’s out to center field. Merrill sizing this one up. And there’s one away. He was all over that first pitch fast ball. Just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit. So, up next, Victor Scott. There’s the strike. Next offering upstairs. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. Gets a piece and stays alive. Foul ball still a one and two count. way inside. Gets out of the way. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. swings and misses struck him out. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. Up next for the Cardinals, leftielder. Ivon Herrera. Next up for the Cardinals, fly to right, his first time. And there’s a ball. Donovan the runner at first with two gone. Now this is in the air down the line and that’ll do it. So one hit is all they get. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatis Jr. Fast for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. There’s a swing and a drive on its way. Gone. His 18th home run of the season. It’s 3-1. That fast ball wasn’t even in the zone and he was still able to hit it out. Wow. That’s just a great feeling as a hitter. You let the ball travel, tracked it pretty nicely. He’s almost beat there, but he gets the bat head in time and it’s true enough to stay fair. I mean, that’s a good feeling when you can hit an opposite field home run and he did it right there. Arise batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s 0 and two. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the last half of the third. That one a little bit high now. One and two. That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated. So, he’s going to have to collect himself a little on the ground on to first and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Padres, third base, Manny. And now it’s Manny Machado. He’s 0 for one. And Manny gets a piece. Next offering popped in the air right field. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single. Well, that’s one of those knocks where you almost expect to get some jabs from your teammates when you get back to the dugout. With the way defenders track down balls these days, I mean, both from the infield and in the outfield, there really aren’t a lot of base hits on balls hit like that. But there’s always a little room back behind the first and second baseman to drop a lawn dart in there. And he found a way man at first. One away. Slides, but he can’t come up with it. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Back-to-back singles. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bats speed. First and second, one out. And here is Xander Bogarts. That one missed. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. And another ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. And that misses upstairs. Now three and 0. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. And a strike on the outside edge. back up the middle and a base hit. The throw in. It’s offline. The run comes in. It’s 4-1. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Two on, one out. Stepping in for San Diego. Jake Croninworth on the ground to the left. Makes the sliding stop. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. We saw a few skills on display there for the out. Technique was great. Reaction time was there and the slide was smooth. Watching that play come together was really fun. Alacius in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Some early action out there in the bullpen. Andre Palante, the young right-hander up and throwing. Runners on first and third. Two away. Next offering is fouled back. Now he breaks his bat. Slings to first and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. So two runs on four hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. Three innings complete. It’s the Padres’s four and the Cardinals won. Back here at Petco Park. Now it’s the DH Alec Burlson. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. You know, these cards, to put it bluntly, need to put together more competitive at bats, and I don’t think they’ve lived up to their own expectations at the plate. I think things are happening a little quicker than this offense would like, and we see it in the numbers. They’re hitting into a lot of outs early in the at bat. Darish kicks, delivers off the plate. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, he froze him with a great fast ball right on the corner. It’s kind of like bowling and you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow it just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin. Well, he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called. Third strike. Here comes Wilson Contrus fly to left his first time. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. Contrarus goes 6’1, 32 years old, and he was born in Venezuela. Come on. That one drilled left field and gone. A solo shot and they cut into the lead. It’s 4-2. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden, they’re back in this ball game. Here’s Nolan Aronado grounded out his first time up. Pitch misses there and that is ball one. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Maldonado makes the grab and there’s two gone. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Poso in the box now as he leaves that one up high. Next pitch is outside. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And it’s fouled away. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. Top half of inning number four. Pop foul out of play off to the right. On its way to the corner and that will drop foul. Next offering misses and the count’s full. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. And they’ll do it again. That one hit to right and that lands in no man’s land. A foul ball. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. And Eric Summersgill punches him out. That’s a strikeout. But not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now 42. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back now. The left fielder Gavin Sheetsielderav ripped and this one looks like trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Maldonado digs in now right through there for a strike. You know, these Padres’s doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game, and the numbers back that up. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. Next one is off the play. One and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Sheets stands at second with no outs. San Diego. In the air out towards left center. Scott sizes this one up and he makes the catch. Grounder tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. So, man aboard, one down, and it’s Tatis at the plate. He’s already homerred here in this one. Fouled off left side. Just missed. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. That one fouled off the one two. Liner base hit in comes the run from third to add on. It’s an RBI single and they’re up by three. Picks himself up an RBI. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Next to hit, Luis Azide low. Ball one. One run across in the frame so far. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. Now batting third baseman Manny Machado. Here comes Manny Machado. One for two. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Pulls that one foul. Two outs. That’s off the mark. Ball one. Well, the good thing so far is that he hasn’t issued any free passes. Unfortunately, they’re making pretty good contact. So, not getting the swings and misses and making that defense work behind him. That one not close. Two and two now. will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning, but the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now 52. Back here in San Diego, ready now for the fifth inning at the plate. Jordan Walker Darvish back to work and that drops in for a strike. You know, these Cardinals just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for them, so they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Tatis tracks it down for the Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. The Cardinals trailing by three and we’re at the top of the fifth. That’s a strike and the count one and one. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and that one is off the wall and into second with one away. That’s a double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott struck out swinging his first time. Ball one there. to Jay-Z the runner at second with one away on the ground right side and it goes just foul Padre let’s go swing and going to miss. Darvis checks on the runner to Jay-Z back in on a dive. And now it’s one and two. Oh, great stop from his backside. Up next for the Cardinals, second base Donovan. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. The walk and he’s also singled. Come on, you can do it. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Pitch misses and a count even one and one. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. That one to first now two away as they get a run across. Now batting leftielder Ivon Herrera. Now the number two hitter Ivon Herrera. Bowl for two in this one. And that’s in for a strike. 0 and one. Two outs and one in scoring position. And there’s a foul ball. Two outs outside low and the count one and two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Out of the ground to third, whips it across. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. One run, one hit, one error and one left. Home half of the fifth. Coming up, it’s the Padres’s five and the Cardinals three. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Sunny Gray. And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year, so he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit for any. Merrill. Merryill in the box again takes the strike. You know, these Padres’s really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished right through there. Got him. And the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it. And kind of a gift in a two- strike count. But sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. Bogarts up to the plate for the third time as he looks at one down low. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Swing it a miss. Strike one. That’s a little bit low. Bogard swings through that one. Two balls, two strikes and it remains two and two. fouled off and they’ll do it again. One down, base is empty. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Just kept it simple. played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there’s just no one there to knock it down. Man at first with one gone. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. And there’s the strike. And that one is inside and a foul ball. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. that misses. And now it’s three and two. Come on, make it count. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. back-to-back base hits. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. First and second, one out. The Glacius the next to hit. Just missed. Padres. Two on, one out. Double play ball to second. There’s one. What a double play that was. Inning over. No runs, two hits, no errors, and one left on. Five innings complete. It’s the Padres’s five and the Cardinals three. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the top of the six. And now the DH Alec Burlson. There’s the strike. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that’s downstairs and outside. One ball, two strike off the outside edge. And now the count is two and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. A swing and a soft liner. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting the first base, Wilson Contras. And up to hit is Wilson Contras. He’s already homered in this game. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Action in the pen down there. Jeremiah Estrada, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Peralta also getting ready. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One ball, one strike. Right side hard hit and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting third base Nolan Aronado and the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you Darvish. gave him a good effort as he exits with a lead. And we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. Now pitching out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Nick Paveta. And he has some nasty breaking stuff. Nick Pavetta. Here’s Nolan Aronado. There’s the strike. Swings and misses. Aronado in an 02 hole. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Yoel Po now at the plate. Poso having a lot more success on the road this season. San Diego fouled off down the right side. Strike two. And he grounds one to the right side. They take the force out and that will end the inning. So a job well done from the Frier bullpen that time. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Padres’s five and the Cardinals three. Back here at Petco Park, there’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bats. That clips the corner. One’s the count. Let’s go. Next one misses. And now it’s even. One and one. That one ripped. And it gets into the corner, but it’s fouled. That misses. And the count’s even at two. bows that off to the left and will do it again. That one is absolutely belted and it’s into the gap around first heading for two. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. Put a really nice balanced swing on it and when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box and he’ll feel real good about that one. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And now it’s going to be Martin Maldonado. There’s the strike. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom of the sixth. Next pitch is outside. And a big swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. That misses. Two balls, two strikes. The counts at second with nobody out. That smashed towards center. Brings it in with a nice running grab. And there’s one down. Wow. He looked like he was running before the ball was hit. didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. So the lineup flips over and now the right fielder Fernando Tatiz Jr. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run and a good fast ball to start him off at strike one. Man, I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. And a base hit right there. Sheets around third. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. It’s six to three. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Luis Az. The next up for the Padres’s 0 for three in this one. Tatis runs hit well right field way back and gone. His seventh home run of the season and they boost their lead. It’s 83 away. Well, I’m not really sure how he kept that fair. When you’re out in front on a breaking ball like that, such a good chance that it’s going to hook foul, but not this time. He kept the hands moving forward just long enough to sneak it inside that foul pole. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout, and he’ll make a move to the pen. Sunny Gray will depart. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Oh, yeah. Righty reliever out of the pen, Andre Palante. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. One out, base is empty. Here’s Machado swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Still only one out here in the inning. Just off the inside edge. And down on strikes and there’s two away. Boo. He was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him look, that was just nasty. Two down, base is empty. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And that one fouled off. Going to count one and two. Stays alive. got him looking for the strikeout. That was pretty nasty. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now 83. You’re dialed into the show. Top of inning number seven. Now it’s the right fielder Jordan Walker. Pavetta, the tall righty, 32 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it on his own and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Short stop Thomas to Jay-Z. Thomas Sajay-Z getting ready to hit. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. Outside low and that’s ball one and that’s down and away. last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. A little out front there as he swings through it. and he chases that one now. Two away. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Now up for St. Louis, Victor Scott. There’s a strike. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. And now one and two. And that one got a piece of him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Here’s the second base, Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that is out of play. That one the other way. He’s got it. And that is out number three. The Cards leave one. Can’t chip away at an 83 deficit. And we’re back. It’s Sander Bogarts now. Sander Bogarts. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Hit in the air. Center field. Scott moving back for this one. And there’s one down. Now batting second base. Now it’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Brown ball to the right side and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting the shorts stop Jose Glacius. Jose Glacius digs in now. And a strike. Foul ball there. I wouldn’t say the game’s close right now, but it’s not out of reach either. I mean, these guys really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Three up, three down for San Diego, but they lead it 8-3. Now pitching Ron Marinacio gets the call from the pen. This is his third time out this year. Ivon Herrera now at the plate 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. And a foul ball. Next pitch is outside. Breaking ball misses down and away. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Next is the designated hitter, Alec Burlson. First pitch misses. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Adrien Morahon, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Matsui getting cranked up as well. Herrera aboard here at first with nobody out. That one catches the zone and it’s one and one. Just missed. drilled out towards left center field. That one is back. Tattooed to tater town and gone. That’ll fire up the dugout. It’s 85. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game and just like that, they’re back in it. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. To the slight opposite field into the gap. Man, making it look easy, that’s for sure. Here’s Contraras now. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And that’s a strike. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Man, he’d like to have that pitch back. swing and a high fly ball out towards right center field. Tatis puts it away for the out and there’s one away. Now batting third base. So now it’s Dolan Aronado one for three. Now one out to right. Tatis after it. Snags it for the second out. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Ron Marinacio done for the day. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Jeremiah Estrada will take over here and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Two outs, space is empty. Yoel Po will hit next. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Just missed. Swinging a miss. 99. How do you do the high fast ball? Particularly for young hitters, can be hard to lay off of because you see it so well at eye level, but it’s really hard to catch up and get that top hand to work on time. just misses the mark outside the zone. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That one is hammered right field. That’s back there. And that lands inside the party porch for a home run. Bottoms up. That one felt good. And they close the gap. It’s 86. That gives them hope. They can pull off this comeback. They just need a few more swings like that and they’re back in business. That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched. Taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. Base is empty with two away. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Now batting shortstop Thomas Sajay-Z Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals in there and it’s 0 and one’s fast for a strike perhaps. Not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. The tying run at the plate out towards right center field. And that is that. But two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 86. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. And here is Gavin Sheets.av Sheets. Palante back to work. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. Swinging a foul out of play. Just missed. Swings through that one out in front that time. And that one hammered. That’s back. And that is gone. He flexes his power with that swing. And they tack one on the board. It’s 96. Singi. The ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact, man. It’s been impressive. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So, digging in now for San Diego, Martine Maldonado. There’s the strike. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. That pitch just misses the inside corner. One and two to count. Slider misses outside in the air right side of the infield. Contraras settles under it, makes the grab, and there’s one down. Now batting right fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Check swing called strut. And there’s a ball. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Oh, that high force seam fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off. They’re trying to stay back with two strikes, make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate, good rotation through the zone, elevate it a little bit, get a lot of swings and misses. And that’s a really nice job right there. Arise in the box now. No balls in a strike now. One miss. fights that one away. Still one and two. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. Last chance coming up here for the Cards. Back now and on the mound the closer Robert Suarez. He’s been so good against lefties. Victor Scott getting ready to hit. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. Guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. Swings through that one for strike one. And that misses one ball, one strike. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. And that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Singy. That’s a start. Yeah. As soon as that ball got through, I could see down in the dugout, players pumping their fists. They know that they got a chance in this ball game. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Here’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan, on the corner for a strike. 0 and one. Scott leads off second with nobody out. Come on. Just missed. On the ground to third. Arise takes it himself. Nice job to recover from the offline throw. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Herrera. Ivon Herrera digs in now. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. He is an absolute flamethrower, of course. And you don’t have to watch very long. And the radar gun is lighting right up. Well, you can see all the fans looking at the scoreboard after each pitch. I don’t think you see it at the plate. You hear it go by. And that’s off the inside edge at a count one and two. And downstairs, Chris, it seems like more and more pitchers are training to up that velocity. Yeah. And they’re understanding efficiency as well from mechanics, from biomechanics. These pitchers are paying attention. They’re trying to get better and they’re trying to get an edge and a pop off right side. Foul territory. Arise makes the catch. Two down location as well with the velocity. So many of these hard throwers are working up in the zone at least in part to combat the launch angle swing. Right. Yeah. And if you’re effective with that pitch where you can throw it at the top of the zone as a strike that can be called, now you can start to elevate and try to get that swing and miss with two strikes. Burlson stands in now and watches strike one. And that one missing low. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Suarez is just one strike away. Breaking ball misses down and away. That turns out to be a really good take right there, but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Burlson checks his swing. Appeal down to third. No swing. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, with this sixth win in a row, all of a sudden, you start to look around up and down the lineup to your left, to your right as a player, and you say, you know what, we’re good. Uh we may have had some tough times earlier on, but this is a good team and you start to expect this kind of play out of yourselves. We’ll see if this translates into a longer winning streak than it is right now. 96 the final in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
