MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Aug 1, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So almost ready to get underway and our starting pitcher here today, Dylan Cease. Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Brendan Donovan clips the outside corner and we’re underway from San Diego. Off the mark there. One and one. Swings through that. Two. That one missing inside. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Fights it off. He’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that one almost hit him. Straighten him up a little bit. Line drive, base hit right center field. So runner aboard to start the inning. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. And man, I’ll tell you, a line drive like that into the gap just feels so good. It’s feedback that you had everything on time and in control from start to finish with your swing. And now it’s Ivon Herrera edge of the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Let’s go Dylan. right through there for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Some heat there at 98 mph. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. Got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Next is the designated hitter, Alec Burlson. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, runner on the go. Swing and a miss. Throw there safe. I think that steel kind of sets the tone, not just for this game, but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. Come on. And now it’s even up. Donovan the runner at second with one away. swings and pulls a foul to the right side. Line drive, pulls it down, and there’s two gone to second with the throw in. No chance to get back. It’s a double play. No score as we head to the bottom of the first. And we’re back on the mound for this one. Steven Matz. Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season. And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes, that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count, allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of the ball games. So, we’ll see if that remains true in this one. And here is Fernando Tatiz Jr. That’s inside. Fernando Tatis Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000. and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. That one misses. Two and one. Two balls, one strike. swing and a miss. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Outside with a breaking ball. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And here it comes. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Tatis waits. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. line drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. He saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go up. And right there we see the result. of Royale. Luis Arise stands in. Hey Louise, let’s go. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Let’s go. Let’s go to first and they’ve got him picked off. The tag and he’s out at second. So much for their first hit right there. Good move and he had him leaning all the way. That one pulled foul. One out. Base is empty. And that one hit to first and he takes it himself for the out. Batting third. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. This group was shut out their last game. So we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. you’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored and you want to get off to a great start. Score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Swang and a highf fly ball well struck that’s back there and it’s caught just in front of the wall. Natada for the Padres’s in the opening frame. will go to the second and San Diego no score on the show back here in San Diego. Top of the second now up to the plate. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. CE back to work. CE the 6’2 righty 200 lb and they went out and made a trade for him last season. That one outside going to count one and two. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. just tried to overthrow that pitch. Next offering misses and it’s two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Outside corner. Got him looking. Yeah, that’s a tough pitch to stay on. You don’t want to get beat inside. And as you see that pitch continue to run away from you. By the time it’s in the catcher mid, you think it’s a ball off the plate away. Mason win next up for the Cardinals. Tap foul at the plate. There’s the strike. Joe McDonald, our umpire behind the dish. Yeah, Boo. Joey Mack. Sometimes a little tough to figure out. We may see some hitters and pitchers asking him where a pitch was here or there, but most of the time he keeps it reasonable. Next pitch misses way outside. Singy, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away and down. And look out. Almost got him upstairs. Well, you’ve got to establish the inside part of the plate early. And that sends a message not just to this hitter but to the rest of the lineup as well. One down, base is empty. Line to left. Johnson right there to make the grab. Two away. That is it. The right fielder number 18, Jordan. And now the right fielder, Jordan Walker, taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s what it was. If you swing at it, he had a broken back jog back to the dugout. Next offering is outside. Two-1. Two out. Space is empty. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Batting seven, the catcher, Yoel Poso. So, a man at first. Here’s the catcher, Yoel Poso. And it’s fouled away. right through there for a strike. No score here in the second. And that’s outside. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another Blind drive, base hit right field. Walker around second, out his way to third. And they hold him at third. 90 ft away with two out. The third baseman, Thomas Saji. Thomas Sajay-Z. Next up for the Cardinals. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Fought off. Foul in the air. Left field down the line. Fair ball and the Cardinals score first. It’s one zip. A costly mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. First and second, two outs. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. swing and a ball popped in the air. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the top of the second. Pitch misses. One ball, one strike. Hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just fouled. Two on, two outs. Got him looking. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s the center fielder. Mer. There’s the strike. had some cut action to it. Velocity pretty good on that slider so far. Moving the ball around nicely. Swinging a ground ball on the run. Throw to first and it’s going to wind up out of play. Well, that was a throw that just shouldn’t have been made. They scored a single and an error. The official scorer doesn’t believe a good throw would have gotten it out and neither do I. We can’t hear it from up here, but I wonder if anyone was telling him just to eat the throw. You know, that’s where communication on the runner takes off for third. Pitch in for a strike and the throw out of third. That’s just a poor decision right there. And I’m sure somebody’s going to talk to him when he gets back into the dugout. You have to understand who’s at the plate and who’s coming up. These are guys that can drive the ball in the gap, hit the ball over the fence. You don’t have to worry about being aggressive and trying to get yourself up, especially at third base in that situation. Just doesn’t make any sense. Up the middle and that’s a base hit. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single exist. That’s a good hitter. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat, step off throw to first. Bogard dives back. I think you want to get a one-way lead, be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. Ground ball left side could be two. The throw to second is offline. Two on, one out. Now it’s the second base, Jake Croninworth. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed on the ground. Could be two. Donovan for one throw to first, but he beat it. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. You’re right. So digging in now for San Diego, Bryce Johnson, a switch hitter batting right. That one catches the corner for a strike on the ground to Jay-Z. throws across the diamond. Out number three. Padres’s leave a pair. They trail here one- nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. First off, bringing it just misses. And that’s fouled off. Ball to strike the pitch. Now batting the left fielder, Ivon. Ivon Herrera next up for the Cardinals. Struck out looking his first time. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and a superb diving catch. Now that designated Burl. So, a great diving catch and that was only possible because of the route he took to get there, right Chris? Yeah. Statcast shows us just how efficient that route to the ball was. In fact, that’s about as good as it gets. Pretty much a direct line to it. And perhaps he was a wide receiver in a different life. I don’t know. But man, great job to hold on all the way through the dive as well. No fumble caused by the ground. man at first. One away. Now that’s smacked to right center. Diving makes the grab. Just a great job of concentration there as he leaves the ground to go airborne to make a diving catch. That’s a tough play, but he got the job done. Here comes Wilson Contrarus. He’s 0 for one. Right through there for a strike. Andre, let’s go. Next offering is fouled back. Donovan, the runner at first with two gone and a foul ball. He stays alive. Ground ball up the middle. Croninworth tosses to first and Contrarus is retired. And that is that. The Cards leave one. They lead it one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark set for the bottom of the third. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Diaz swing and that’s ripped towards right center. Walker snags it and there’s one away. Now batting the right fielder. So with one down it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Junior one for one with a single so far. And the first pitch misses for ball one. With Tatis at the plate, we’re looking at a player that is never going to be considered boring. He’s an electric player that manages to make plays most players wouldn’t consider trying. And he plays the game his own way. It’s a big reason why he’s considered such a fan favorite. And that is downstairs. Now two balls in a strike and a swing and a miss. Two balls, two strikes. A change up. Missing. Full count now. And a base hit up the middle. So a man aboard now with one away. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle. Even on ground ball. So a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. One gone runner at first. And now the first baseman, Luis Az. And that drops in for a strike. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and2. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher cuz you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. Liner base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Machado in the box now takes strike one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning and a base hit on the line. Runner around third. He scores to tie it up and the go ahead run stops at third base. Huge gamet right there. Came through in a big spot to drive in the run. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launched that one into center. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s reached on an infield single his first time. Fast ball for a strike going one. That one is absolutely belted and it gets into the corner, but it’s fouled. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. Inside now. One and two. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Runners at the corners with two outs. Next pitch is outside. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. There’s the strike now. Two and one. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Runners on first and third. Two away in the dirt, but no advance from the runners. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. He fouls it off. Will do it again. Tied up here in the early going on the ground to the left to Jay-Z. Whips it across. Bogart’s retired. Inning over and it could have been worse, but the RBI single pushes across a run. All even at one a piece. Back after this on the show back here at Petco Park. And now here is Mason Win. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Right through there for a strike. B. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. That’s to third. Handled by Machado. Zips it across. One up, one down. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Not even close there. Ball one. And another ball all tied up. Top half of inning number four. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Next offering is fouled back. Ground ball right side. He steps on the bag. Two quick outs here in the top of the fourth. Now batting the catcher, Yoel Poso. Now up for St. Louis, Yoel Poso. And he’s already singled in this game. First pitch just misses. And strike one to the catcher. Just not able to catch up to that velocity. Two down. Nobody in the air right field and it falls. Now batting the third baseman, Thomas Saji. Go ahead run on base. And up next for St. Louis, Thomas Sajay-Z RBI single his last time up. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Poso off of first with two away. Here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. That’s back to back singles for them. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know hitters they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly. First and second, two outs. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott in the air, left field, down the line, and that’s the third out. So the Cards strand a couple score remains tied 1-1. And we’re back. Bottom of the fourth. stepping in. Gavin Shitterav, you know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. You know, these Padres’s showing great discipline at the plate, and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Contrarus steps on the bat down. Second baseman. Now here’s Jake Croninworth 0 for one. He hit into a fielder’s choice his first time. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. Next offering is in for a strike. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is downstairs. And there’s a ball. No, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that ball. Bryce Johnson digs in now. Grounded out his first time. There’s a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Sunny Gray, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Palante getting loose as well. Swinging a ball line to center and that gets down for a base hit. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Steven Matz out of the game and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this new arm out of the bullpen, Kyle Ley. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. First and second, one out. Here’s Elias Diaz 0 for one so far. And that one fouled off at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play, boo. Croninworth on second. Johnson at first. One gone. Next pitch misses. Ball one. keeps the attack going with a foul ball. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Oh, really expanded the zone right there with that fast off the outside corner of the plate. Got him to chase it. That’s a tough one to lay off on because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batter’s box. So, it’s a really nice pitch with two strikes. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. He’s two for two and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. ball. Two aboard, two outs. Pitch is in there. One and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. I really think the outer half is open. Two outs. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Third out. That ends the frame. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back here in San Diego, we go to the top of the fifth. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. Cease back to work. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Donovan goes 6’1, 28 years old, and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2018. And that’s downed away. No, he hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. in there at the knees and now it’s three and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. on the ground right side steps on first for the out. Now batting the left field Ivon Herrera now up for St. Louis. Ivon Herrera bowl for two in this one. All right, let’s go. Line drive caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control towards first. Arise takes it to the bag. St. Louis goes down in order. Offense held in check there. Last half of the fifth coming up. All tied 1-1 and welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton and set to get us started. Bottom five, Luis Az. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. swing and he breaks his back. Reaching for it, makes the catch. The third baseman number 13, Manny. Here’s Machado. He gets a shot right here against the righty. And he is elite against right-handed pitching. The contact, the average, and delivers the slug. Slides for the stop over to first. And that’s a great play for the out. Well, Boo, as an infielder, you have to be ready for anything in that spot. It required going to the ground, getting a little dirty, and making a strong throw for the out. Great play, Merrill. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. That’s a ball went with the sweeper. Two down to that’s a strike across the top of the zone and that’s off the inside edge. Now two balls in a strike. swing and a base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Bogarts in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. Last half of inning number five. Ley throws over. Merrill back on a dive. Two outs. Fast ball for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Cut out and miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. One left for San Diego. Score remains deadlocked at one. All set for the top of the sixth. Now up the Cardinals number four hitter Wilson Contrarus. And that drops in for a strike. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Jason Adam getting loose out there. Pavetta getting cranked up as well. That one not close and the count even one and one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense, but when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. and painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult when you tip your cap. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. The one two. Ah, that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Dylan C won’t go any further and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching from the gets the call from the pen and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Go ahead. Run on base. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Mason win. That misses the zone and it’s one and0. Way to lay off that pitch down. fouled off down the right side with a go-ahead run at first and we’re in the top half of the six. Runner takes off and that is out of play. Squirts away a little bit in there. He’s safe. Wild pitch and into second moves the go ahead run. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Runner at second. Nobody out. Swing and a miss. him out. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. Well, that high forcing fast ball has become such a staple as a strikeout pitch over the years. And what’s so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well. The problem is the velocity at spin rate just happens to jump by you. You expand your zone. You don’t stay tall on the backside and you’re really not even able to make contact. If you do, many times it’s a popup. Walker in the box now as he leaves that one up high. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Makes the grab. Two down. Now batting the catcher Yel Koso. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Yoel Poso the next to hit. He’s been a great free agent side and a swing to miss. Well, a come and get me fast ball right there. He didn’t look ready for the velocity. I think it’d be a mistake to throw him anything off speed right here. Swinging a foul out of play. Contrarus at second with two down. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Battling here as he fouls it away. man at second. Chases the fast ball up the ladder. Struck him out. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one left. 6782 in the bottom of the six. All tied 1-1. Bottom of the inning. So here’s the Padres’s DH. Gavin Sheets. Check swing called strike. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Sunny Gray preparing to come on if needed. And a foul ball. Swung on. Belted. a foul ball. Here’s the O2. And that one upstairs. Ball one. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Swing and a pop off in foul ground and makes the grab. One down. Now batting second baseman Jake stepping in for San Diego Jake Croninworth. Come on. That’s in for a strike. And there’s a foul ball. Ball one. Swinging a ball hit out towards left center field. Scott pulls it down and that quickly two away. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Swinging a highfly ball out towards right field. Walker tracks it down for the out now pitching for. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jason Adams. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. and the numbers are really solid. So, they feel great about handing the ball over to him. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Saji. Thomas Saji. Just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. There’s a swing and a miss. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down. That’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Croin work calls it in and there’s one away. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind swirling around out there. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. And strike two. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. All tied up here in the top half of inning number seven. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Brendan Donovan now at the plate. And that one wrapped foul and that’s in there at the knees. That misses. Now one and two. on the ground to third. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And now Ivon Herrera. Slider misses outside. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Two gone. the possible go-ahead run at first. That one ripped right center field. Merrill flying after this one and it one hops the wall coming home. He will score and they take the lead. Picks himself up an RBI. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside. Saw it deep into the zone and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. So runner at second, two down. Intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Now batting the first first and second, two outs. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. Come on, you can do it. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. That missed by a lot. And one and one. Here the lead runner out at second. Burlson on first with two down. One, two to Contreras up and in. Ball two. Two balls. Two strikes and delivers outside. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Mason win in the St. Louis on deck circle, stays alive, and with two outs and the count full, the runners will be on the move. Good job to fight that one off and they’re all loaded up. A real bad time for a walk. You’re trailing in this ball game trying to keep things close. They’ve been in a difficult spot and things aren’t getting any easier. So bases all loaded up. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. And that’s in for a strike. One. Tough situation right here. It’s so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. down to the dirt, swinging them in. They kept the force that ends the inning and they limit the damage. Cards on the board with this double and it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Phil Mod. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Leading up for the one- run game. And here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. Diaz. That clips the corner. line to the left center field and that’s going to fall for a hit and that turns the lineup over. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Off the bat, it was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you’ve got some real estate to run on. And such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. First pitch misses. and downstairs trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Slap the other way. Foul. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. And a swing and a miss and one away in the bottom of the seventh. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. That’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. And here’s the first baseman, Luis Ais, one for three. up the middle. Off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Here’s Manny Machado. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. and ball one. Typically, the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front, make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. That one is upstairs. Arise off of first with two away and a swing and a miss there. 2-1. Ground ball left side and that goes foul. 32, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Jackson Merrill in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Popped up left side win. He’s got it and that will end the inning. Padres’s leave one and they trail it here two to one. Now pitching for welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the Wandy Peralta. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Now here is Jordan Walker, the right fielder number 18, Jordan Walker. That one finds the corner. Strike one. Peralta in his eighth season. He features a change up, a sinker, a slider, and he works in a fourseamer outside low. And that’s ball one. That’s a little bit low. Fly ball center field. Merrill sizing this one up. He’s got it. And there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Come on. San Diego. And that one fouled off. And the next pitch is way outside. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Yuki Matsui, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Koh warming up as well. Come on. And that’s in the dirt. Now one fouled off. Two and two. There’s a high chopper and that’s just fouled. Fouls it back with two strikes. Next offering is down low. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Due next. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch. Even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. And now Thomas Sajay. Come on, let me get the ground. Missed with a change up. One and0 run game. One out, one on and another ball. Ah, he doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. Swang and a miss. There’s the change up. Didn’t recognize off speed. Thought it was fast ball a little bit out in front. Sliced hard but foul. Fights it off. He’ll see another that one missed. Got him. Two gone now. Well, he froze him with the change up right there. And I think he was so geared up for fast ball once he recognized that it was off speed, he just wasn’t able to make an adjustment. So a really good strike out and pitcher just won the battle. Scott in now takes ball one off the plate. If you’re the pitcher, you’ve got to go right at this guy. It’s the number nine hitter in the lineup. You can’t be afraid of contact in this situation. And a big swing and a miss. One ball, one strike. Fall two. Line drive. Base hit. Ruer puts on the brakes at second. So it’s first and second with two out. Up next for the Cardinals, the second base. First and second, two outs. Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. Just missed. Two on, two outs. Ball. Two balls. No strike. And a foul ball. Makes the count two and one. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and the defense pumps away with nothing. Couple of singles back to back now. Base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. Now the left fielder Ivon Herrera. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Ball one on a pitch inside. So, two balls and no strikes. Pressure is on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Two outs. Little chopper rolls foul. And that one is downstairs now. Three and one. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. 3-1 now. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One runs in now. A long throw home and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. They get a run on, three hits, no errors and two men left on. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Cardinals three and the Padres’s one. Now pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jojo Romero. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year. And that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Now at the plate, Jackson Merrill. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Out of line out towards center. Dives. What a play. That diving catch right there is the kind of play that just fires up the team. Whether it’s to make more great defensive plays or to get back in the dugout and swing the sticks. Here comes X to the plate. Late on that fast ball. No ball, one strike. One down. Base is empty. Check swing and he went. That’s strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Swing and a miss. and he chases that one in the dirt on to first and there’s two gone following the strike out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Now, the DH for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets, 0 for three in this one. First pitch and he just misses. Next offering is fouled back. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. The batter number nine, second baseman. So man aboard Jake Croman work the next up for the Padres’s. fouled off left side. All right, let’s go. The tying run at the plate. Fought off foul. looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out and they’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Foul ball still 0 and two. Tying run at the plate. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and the inning is over. One hit, one left. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals three and the Padres’s won. Now pitching for we’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Steven Kick. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball. Not an easy guy to take deep. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Alec Burlson. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. Tatis going back on this one, reaching for it and brings it in. I tell you what, this is a really cool feeling when you can make that kind of catch over the shoulder. Doesn’t happen very often. It’s not easy, but he made it look easy right there. Nice job. Here’s Contrarus now. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Base is empty, one away here in the top of the ninth. Next one is off the play and it’s two and one activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Yuki Matsui, the left-hander up and throwing the 2-1. That’s down and in. One down, base is empty. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Two down, base is empty. Next to hit, Mason win. First pitch misses on the ground right side. Arise. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So they go quietly there. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. It’s the Cardinals three and the Padres’s one. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Ryan Hley. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So, digging in now for San Diego, Bryce Johnson. No left fieldielder. You’re right. Johnson. And that’s fouled off. That one. the other way. Win fires over to first and they get the lead off man in the N. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. He’s two outs away. Elias Diaz getting ready to hit. Basketball is outside. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Next offering upstairs. This one in the air to Jay-Z under this one. Two down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Fernando Tatis Jr. will hit next. Swing and a miss. There’s the slider going one. two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. Foul ball there. This could end it on the ground and this should do it on the first out ball game. Start of a new month is a great chance to hit the reset button. Whether you’re coming in hot or cold, getting that win today is a great feeling to continue through the rest of the month. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shambi saying so long.
