Chicago Bears STORYLINES TO WATCH || Position Battles, Sleepers and MORE

[Music] I want to take this opportunity to talk about the biggest storylines to watch, the biggest stories of Chicago Bears camp. Let’s go ahead and get right into it. First up, all eyes will be on the left tackle position almost daily. The first few practices were split between Azie Trapillo and Karan Amagaji. Meanwhile, Braxton Jones has been ramping up on the sidelines, and he might be considered slightly behind the other two. So, early on, it’s been a twoman race between Karan and Azie. However, Braxton has three years of experience in the NFL that the other two don’t offer. That should help him get back in the battle. I truly believe that any of the three could wind up starting in week one. All three have the size, length, and talent to succeed in the NFL. It’s about who fits this scheme best, stays healthy, and has the best camp. Both Braxton and Karan are coming back from injuries. Karan had a major injury in 2023, and Braxton had season ending ankle surgery last year. Azie Trapillo, meanwhile, is moving back to the left side after spending the last two years at right tackle. So, all three players could be a bit rusty or struggle early on. This battle will be decided during the joint practices and the first two preeason matchups. Next up, everyone will be watching Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson in their relationship. If it wasn’t for the battle to protect Caleb’s blind side, this would probably be the biggest story. QB1 and our new head coach. Their relationship is one of the most important factors of the entire season and the future of this franchise. There’s bound to be some growing pains here, but the excitement to see Caleb and Ben Johnson grow together is through the roof in Chicago. There will be bumps in the road and everything won’t be easy, but Caleb is a huge part of the reason that Ben Johnson chose this franchise. He wanted a QB that had the talent to take his offense to a level that Jared Goff simply couldn’t. He’s building this offense around Caleb Williams. A QB that has all the tools. And that is exactly what Caleb Williams is. A QB that has all the tools. These two together should form something special. And all eyes will be on both Caleb and Ben going forward. But then let’s talk about a couple of the other rotations the fans will be keeping their eyes on. The running back to job is up for grabs. So while DeAndre Swift is the starter, most people believe there will be some sort of rotation at that position. Swift has never been a short yardage or goal line type of back. And we have three other running backs on the roster that are all better suited for that role. Roshan Johnson, Kyle Manungi, and UDFA Dion Henkins are all bigger, more bruising style of runners than DeAndre Swift is. Ian Wheeler, meanwhile, brings a similar skill set that Swift has to the table. Home run speed and great receiving ability out of the backfield. So far in camp, we’ve already seen Kyle Manungai and Roshan Johnson get some first team reps early in camp, but how will this rotation play out? It’s something the fans will definitely keep an eye on and these guys should get a chance to showcase their skills during the preseason games. The Dline rotation will also be very important and we’ve already seen Dominique Robinson getting some early reps with the first team. The biggest question is who gets the most reps opposite of Montes Sweat and Deo Odingbo was supposed to be that guy, but he is going to face competition from Dom Rob, Austin Booker, and potentially even Big Dex or Shamar Turner if he’s healthy. Turner’s injury is something else that could affect things here. At defensive tackle, I believe Grady Jarrett and Javon Dexter are going to be the starters regardless of how snap counts play out in camp. But unfortunately, injuries are always a big story in training camp. Hopefully, the team can remain relatively healthy going forward as we’re already dealing with injuries to Jaylen Johnson, Sheamar Turner, Luther Burton, and more. These are going to be monitored throughout camp, but so will the guys coming back from injuries such as Colston, Lovelin, and Braxton Jones. They’re going to have a lot of eyes on them when they’re on the field as well. But the last category I want to talk about is finding underdogs or sleepers to root for. Fans love to find the diamond in the rough type players and oftent times some of these guys end up being fan favorites. I know that Ian Wheeler, Theo Benedict, and Jamry Chroma are already well known by a good portion of the Bears fan base. I believe Kyle Manungai and Ian Wheeler also bring that kind of potential. Manungai is one of the guys who could be the newest fan favorite as an underdog. He was a seventhround pick and most people don’t expect much from the Ruters running back. But man, I love the way he runs. He’s shifty, quick, powerful, and has a nose for the end zone all while protecting the football. On top of that, he’s a hard worker and an excellent blocker. And I believe this coaching staff is going to love his style. So with Kyle Manungai, Roshan Johnson, Ian Wheeler, and Dion Henkins all battling it out for that RB2 spot behind DeAndre Swift, I believe our running back room is a little better than most people think. But we have a lot of other things to watch in training camp, but other things like who continues getting the reps in Jaylen Johnson’s absence, who establishes themsself as our backup on the offensive line, especially in that interior position. We’re gonna need someone to be the backup guard and center. Is Ryan Bates healthy? Is a rookie like Luke Newman gonna step up? Or could Bill Murray potentially fill that spot? And then after we find our left tackle, we’re going to have to figure out who the swing tackle is as well. Wide receiver three, could that be a battle? Wide receiver four, there’s a lot of other things to watch cuz training camp is finally in full swing. And there are plenty of storylines to keep an eye on and monitor throughout camp. What will you be watching? And is there a certain player that you really want to hear about or get updates from in camp this year? Let me know in the comments. As always, I’ll try to get the best information and answer all of the biggest Bears questions for camp. Stay tuned. I’ll be here with daily coverage of everything Chicago Bears. Please remember to hit that like button for me. And until next time, bear down. [Music]

  1. Great analysis Swifty. The coaching staff is definitely a big upgrade ..Our roster is definitely worthy of a playoff contender. Gonna be fun to see if they reach their potemtial

  2. @Swifty Love the breakdown, love the discussion on what your seeing. I am looking forward to FINALLY seeing the amount of talent on the roster with a real HC and a real NFL coaching staff

  3. QB1 definitely has the tools. He's not stupid either. Glad he wants input from coaches wants to be in Chicago, is NOT a diva, doesn't get in trouble, shows up on time all promising things. I'm looking forward to his evolution in 2025. I hope he has more B1g Penix Energy in the 1st half, the first play. I hated watching this offenses 1st half funky cold modina every week last season. Glad its a new season ⬇️
