Are Darnell Nurse’ days with the Edmonton Oilers numbered? | Oilers Rumors

Elliot Freriedman said that the Oilers approached every player with a no movement clause and asked them about their future. That includes Arvidson who was the only one willing to wave. That includes Adam Henrique and that includes Darn Nell Nurse. If the biggest insider on one of the biggest hockey podcasts in the world, 32 thoughts is and listen, Freriedman is not clickbay. Freiedman is not Ecklund. Freriedman does not throw stuff out there with his connections for the sake of going, I wonder what kind of reaction this is going to get. If this is coming out, it’s legitimate. The Oilers went to Darnell Nurse. And I think again, if Elliot is putting his reputation on the line, it’s pretty damn I’d say it’s 95% true. The Oilers went to Darnell Nurse to see if he’d be open to waving. That does not mean they went to Darnell Nurse and said, “Get out.” That does not mean they went to Darnell Nurse and said, “We have a trade. Will you wave to go to Pittsburgh? Will you wave to go to Columbus?” Whatever teams you all want to drum up. But the Oilers are obviously somewhat open to this conversation. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have even asked the question. Yeah. Which I think is actually a pretty positive thing that Stan Bowman’s willing to go down basically every avenue to try and make this team better. And you know, all obviously the whole conversation this summer so far has been like, well, McDavid’s not going to like this move. McDavid’s going to love this move. Like they’re finding every way possible to make this team as great as they can. And if moving 9 and a half million on 925 should probably know it by now off your cap is the way to go about and do it like for all you people that complain like oh they need a goalie they need a goalie moving a $9.25 million contract would definitely help them do that. Uh obviously nurse said no and he has every right to go out and do that but again like I appreciate that Bowman’s willing to ask the question and it just shows like there’s no he has no connection I guess to all these guys right I don’t there’s very few contracts he’s actually signed at this point. most of them just coming this year and what other extensions came off last year. But yeah, I think it’ll be a while before we see someone like Donnell Nurse moved off this roster. And for people saying he was the best defenseman in the cup final, um, strong disagree. His play fell off quite significantly once the playoffs began. Good moments of course, everyone did, but really good regular season by Nurse. Everything after that once you were able to start matching up against him and going night to night against the same guy, if you look at it, he fell off a cliff. Yeah, team team teams expose them. I’m not saying they don’t. And if you want to talk about defenseman who had a good cup final, the list is Bard Wman and that’s it. So, just the short for Giant question is this. Do you think Darnell Nurse finishes out his contract with the Oilers and we’ll put a poll question up as well so uh so people can have their say on it. But Darnell Nurse is signed for 1 2 3 four five more seasons at $9.25 million. as it goes on. I mean, the percentage of the cap that it takes up certainly starts to go down. Um, his trade protection changes by year three. Um, again, it becomes a 10 team no trade list, 10 team no trade list. Well, for the last three years, if you had to take a guess right now, Liam, would you say he finishes out this contract with the Oilers? Uh, no. I don’t I don’t think you will. I know the percentage of the cap is going to change like you said, but still like it’s such a large number. Like even with the cap going up, you can still get two really good players with that three if you really want to push it out. I just think eventually it’s going to get to a point where the Oilers find a younger player that’s just going to be able to do what what he’s able to do. Maybe like Nurse is very unique player and his athleticism and he’s very physical and he has that edge to his game. There’s very few players like him in the league, but eventually it just gets to a point where it’s like you’re not worth that much money. And I like what Nurse has done throughout his time in his in with an Oiler, but eventually it’s just like, okay, you’re not performed in the playoffs year after year. You’re arguably getting worse in some categories of it. You’re having a good bounce by regular season. Like we said, that was really promising. But again, it’s it goes to show that like the regular season can only show you so much about a certain player. Like Evan Bushard is almost the complete opposite, right? Like everyone’s so upset about what he does in the regular season, but as soon as you bring up the playoffs, it’s like, “Oh wow, he’s on the top unit in power play. McDavid and Dad will step up, but you bring up Nurse and it’s like, well, he has to play with Troy Ster. What’s he supposed to do?” He’s like, “Well, no, he gets paid enough to be the guy that’s supposed to drag his line, not be dragged down when his under million dollar partner doesn’t play with him.” So, no, I don’t think he’ll end his career as an Evans Oiler. Yeah, I think I would lean no as well. And I saw someone say, hey, like, you know, wait till he wins a cup and then it’s easier to get rid of him or convince him to go. And I actually think that might honestly be the opposite. I think you might win a Stanley Cup with Darnell Nurse and then be like, or I mean, you might need him to play better to win a Stanley Cup. So maybe these things do go hand in hand to some extent. Um, but like you might win a Stanley Cup this year or the year after and all of a sudden be like, “Ah, it’s only three more years. You’re not going to trade him after you win the cup.” And then, you know, after that there’s two more years left. I don’t know. I I I could see a path to it happening. Like, I’m not sitting here saying it’s a 100% definitive. No, Darnell Nurse does not finish his career with the Edmonton Oilers. Um I I think the door is is open to it and and there’s a pathway to that happening, I should say. Um but I wouldn’t again, gun to my head, Tyler, pick one. I’m probably sitting here and voting no in the polls. What’s up, Nation citizens? After rumors of Darnell Nurse being asked to waive his no movement clause, it got the guys thinking. Could the Oilers actually be looking to move on from Darnell Nurse? While it doesnt seem like it will happen anytime soon it is clearly on the radar.

Today, Tyler and Liam unpacked what Nurse sticking around means for the Oilers’ offseason plans. They discussed how his presence impacts cap flexibility, pairings on the back end, and the potential ripple effects it has on targeting other additions.

Do you see the Edmonton Oilers moving on from Darnell Nurse anytime soon?

  1. Would love to see it but sadly Nurse has full control of the situation (thanks, Holland!)… I think it will be too difficult to move him

  2. That they asked him if he would waive ntc then they are signalling they would like to move him for the right deal.

The message that sends to nurse and the team – that management sees the future of the team being better with nurse gone is not good.

  3. Trade to the Rangers for Rempe. Get some picks, draft a defenseman, heck develop Rempe into defensemen. You can do a lot with 10 million.

  4. Trade them both…Atleast Henrique…too slow….find some player who's more useful…a bigger faster physical player who can forecheck n penalty kill…., doesn't have to be a scorer…,

  5. Why cant they restructure his contract / term? Increase the term an additional 8 years, dropping his annual salary to 5 mill a year? Done! Easy Peazy……Everybody is happy – jubilations!

  6. You two have too much time in your hands. Its all BS. Nurse stays and wont waive his non trade clause because a stupid GM gave him a lot of money and a bad deal for the Oil.

  7. Such a clown channel keep using darnell for content. Darnell is good, trying to trade him he will end up like petry. Even after getting beat having all the skill in the world by good structure and a great strategy (florida). Build to beat the best team, become stronger, we are always gonna get pushed around by them until we can push them back. We never beat Paul Maurice in the playoffs ever. Darnell scores in the finals, everyone else dissappears like greedy oilers fans give up a good dman thats a stay at home for what? What are you hoping to get for him? Everyone thought skinner, arvidsson was the missing piece and look what happen. Keep nurse. Sign a bunch of minimum contract players and find out who actually wants to play. We just keep going for these popular guys because it looks attractive to the fans. Id take shutting out a team over winning 7-8 if anything should have traded bouch for an entire line or something. Maybe bouch for seth jarvis who we could have drafted by the way. Jarvis has perf position, knows where to be. Thats what connor needs someone who knows where to go

  8. Oil shud never have signed Nurse to that contract – dear Old Ken’s legacy – overpaid so called D man , then they sign Bouchard to another ridiculous contract, so what if it was a offer sheet – they should have seen Bouch is another Nurse, BOUCH HAS A SHOT THAT”S IT

  9. People criticize EP40’s contract, and after last season, for good reason, but he’s still in his 20s. Nurse’s chances of rebounding and being worth anywhere near his cap hit are far less.

  10. Well, at my work if you want someone to quit, you make their work unrewarding and/or their job unpleasant.
If Nurse wants to stay, the coaching staff need to get him to process things faster. Jamie McLennan said Seth Jones was shocked when he arrived in Florida how much video work each player was expected to do. So by the time the Oilers ran into them, Florida had seen all the schemes and tendencies. Nurse would do well to take ownership of his career like that. I don't what he's doing now, but he needs to do something different.

  11. Get rid of Nurse that bum. He is an overpaid athlete, and an under performed player. For 5 mill he would be a good keep on the team.

  12. Eklund said McDavid is going to LA this summer. Hockeybuzz is now washed. As bad as it used to be it's actually 10x worse now. When Mike Augelo and Russ Cowan leave, you know it's really bad.

  13. We knew the day it was signed the deal was going to be a millwheel for the next eight years. The throwing in of NMCs like candy needs to stop, especially with gross overpayments like this.

  14. Nurse makes 9.25M and has no ability to take the man. Hes a mess in his own zone, and does no special teams. What does he even do?? Breakout passes ?!

  15. Here is a suggestion
, maybe put Nurse up on the wing. Get another defenseman. Now, the cap is the only issue. I don't mind Nurse at 5 mill, but 9.25 no way.

  16. Let’s get one thing straight, people are not complaining that the oilers need a goalie, it’s a fact Edmonton needs better goaltending.

  17. Oilers are trying to swing a deal for Pastrňák. The thread has to include nurse and a ton of future picks. Bruins are in full tank mode for McKenna. Sweeney was Extended to take the blame

  18. Bouchard had a good cup final??? I saw him get walked like a dog and not attempt to get back and recover.
Nurse and Bouch should go and you get some D that actually defend, you got the best 2 forwards on the planet so help them by stopping the other team scoring. Not an oilers fan but honestly facinated how yall see your team. Next you will be saying Skinner is as good as Bob …
