🔴LIVE 🔴St Louis Cardinals VS San Diego Padres / August 02/ Baseball envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25

about get started here. Pitching at our game today, Mason Miller and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Up the middle and he knocks it down. Gets it there in time though. He keeps his composure and they get the out. Here’s a Cardinals lineup now. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Booan. That can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So, we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together, and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Swanging a ground ball. Fires to first on the run on the money. Nice play. Batting third leftielder Alec Burles. Two outs. Base is empty. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give them a little bit more trouble. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that is out of play. Oh, it’s a really good pass to the ball right there. Just a little bit too quick. He’s got to find a way just let it travel a hair more on the ground. Let’s go. Delacius fires over to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. And now the Padres’s get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here with my pal Singy. And on the mound today, a guy who will give them innings, Matthew Liberator. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Fernando Tatiz Jr. leading things off and takes a strike. This guy who grew up in big league clubouses. Got to be a nice feeling, Singi, when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and two. Ball one there. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark for those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues. them being on the baseball field for some it’s pressure for them. They feel that they are right at home. Got him looking for the K. That was pretty nasty. Luis Arise stands in. Luis Arise in there for a strike at the top of the zone. One down. Base is empty. He swings and fouls one off. Dives and he can’t hang on. Flip to the pitcher is in time and they get it out on the play. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. It’s Singy against the southpaw on the mound. The skippers loaded this lineup with righty bats. Certainly following the conventional wisdom here, Boo. That extra split second can make a big difference for a hitter. So, these righty batters will need to take advantage and make this tactical move pay off. And now it’s Manny Machado. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average swinging a miss and one. He’s looking pretty sharp to start the ball game. He’s got that good fast ball working early. Hot shot to third. Gorman throws on to first. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Scoreless after one. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started. And now the first baseman, Wilson Contrarus. Miller, the tall righty, 26 years old, and he was a third round pick in 2021. Miller back to work. swing and a miss and 102 on the radar gun and a big swing and a miss. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. Good job to fight that one off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Breaking ball misses down and away. Stays alive. swings and misses. It’s a strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Usually when you see several pitches, you’re going to get at least one that you might be able to do something with, but they didn’t exactly challenge him in any way right there. And really, they just used his aggressiveness against him. I don’t think he even got a pitch in the zone. No, that’s a good point, Sigy. He goes down on strikes, but not a single pitch was actually in the strike zone. Now at the plate, Mason Win. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. One down. Base is empty. High chopper to third. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw. And they don’t get the out. Batt Nolan Gorman. Man at first. Nolan Gorman. Next up for the Cardinals. Just missed. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. Miller throws over. Win back on a dive. Second inning here. No score. Breaking ball in there for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Well, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. So, two down now and here is Jordan Walker and a strike right through there. That one at triple digits. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the top of the second. And a slider misses down and away. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Cut on and missed at 10 and one. One and two. That’s inside. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. And that one is lifted in the air. Merryill moving in on this one. He’s got it. And that is that. The Cards leave one. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Merrill. And he drops it down the third baseline and foul ball. The 01 popped up to the left into foul ground. Poso on his way over. Can’t get there. This one lands foul. And now one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. And that’s outside center field. calls it in and there’s one away batting fifth. Here’s Xander Bogarts singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. That misses the zone. One and0 Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter. This one in the air center field. Scott makes the grab for the second out. Batting six leftielder Lauriano comes up to hit. There’s the strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. There’s the swing and a miss. No balls, two strikes. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Two outs. That’s off the inside corner. And that is ball one. Two down to in the air right field. Pretty well struck. That’s back there. And one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So, runner at second, two down. Next is the designated hitter, Jake Croninworth. And the first offering is not close. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. Late swing fouled to the left. Lauriano on its second with two down. Swang at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He’ll score and the Padres’s take the lead. Not in time. He’s got a double. Seeing some good swings from him right now with consecutive extra base hits. Just a really nice job of turning on that pitch and smoking it down the line. And there’s no one playing there. So once it drops in fair, you’re on your way to extra bases. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. That one in there across the letters. Runner at second. Two down. Bottom half of inning number two. Next pitch is outside. That one is absolutely belted and it’s off the wall. Run comes in from second and they lead by two. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Man in scoring position with two away. Here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first. Did not go. Runner at second. Two down. And delivers outside. Ground ball right side. Contrarus. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals nothing. Back here in San Diego onto the third inning. And now the catcher comes up to him. Yoel Poso. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. this one in the air. A rise and there’s one away. Victor Scott digs in now. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Check. Swing. Went around. It’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty. That’s off the mark. And the count even one and one. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. swung on, popped up on the infield. Machado hauls it in for the out. Now batting second base. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Here’s the second base, Brendan Donovan. 0 for one so far. Let’s go in there at the knees. Just missed. Just missed. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Hard hit left side. Slings to first. St. Louis goes down in order. Redbirds down quietly. They trail it here. Two nothing. back here at Petco Park. And now the right fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis Jr. and first offering is fouled off. Beligi, this is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses and it’s something that you see throughout the game. sons whose fathers also played the majors. Off the mark there and it’s one and one. Yeah. And beyond that, all the other men in those clubouses that sort of take you under their wing as a son or a nephew and show you some of the tricks of the trade. It’s just invaluable that type of experience. swing and a chopper out to short. Whips it to first. Lead off hitter gone in the third. Now batting first base Louise Arise. You got to be kidding me. Did you see that throw? Not really, Boo. I mean, it happened in the blink of an eye, it seemed. But thankfully Statcast is here to help us out. I mean, you don’t see many throws across the infield that get up into the 90s. So, he really reached back for that one and he had to to get the out. Stepping in for San Diego, Luis Ais. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. And a pitch on the ground right side. Fires over to first. Two up, two down. Up next for the Padres’s. Third base. Here’s Machado 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. and Manny gets a piece and he’ll one and that one fouled off. Two outs. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he got him. Three up, three down. Inning over. Padres’s go down quietly. They’re up two nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark out of the fourth. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. You know, these Cards just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. Switch through that one. It’s a strikeout. Oh, there’s a three pitch strikeout. He can do whatever he wants with the baseball right now. Burles. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. He’s 0 for one. Let’s go. swings through that one out in front that time. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. Strike three and that’s two in a row. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Contrarus the next to hit. Takes ball one. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. And another ball. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. That one misses and it’s three and0. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Swing and a miss at 100 miles an hour. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. One, two, three go to Cardinals. They trail things here two nothing. Bottom of the fourth. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Ball one, no strikes. You know, these Padres’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count, and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Scott pulls it in and there’s one away. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Late with the swing there. Well, it was bumpy in the early going for the lefty, but he settled into a really nice groove. Next pitch misses. Going to count one and two. strikes down. Fouls it back with two strikes and a onew. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Now batting. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. One for one with a double and a run score. First offering and it just misses. And that one clips the corner. And he hits a ground ball right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still finds a way to get off a throw. The flip to the pitcher is late. And they come away without an out. So, a man aboard. So, here’s the Padres’s DH. Jake Croninworth. He doubled home a run in his first AB. Swings through that one for strike one. and one. Lauriano leads off first with two down to the inning. Pickoff throw. Lauriano on the move. Pitch misses. Throw to second. He’s safe. swing and a ball drilled in the air toward towards right center field. Scott makes the play and that’s the inning. Padres’s leave one, but they hold a two nothing lead. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. And now here is Mason Win in his second season, 22 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020. The shorts stop takes a ball. You know these Cardinals, they’re not going to be happy with the at bats they’ve been having so far. Just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for them yet. Now batting third base Nolan Gorman. Dominant performance for him today. Boo. Just two hits allowed so far. No runs across either. And he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced. So I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much. Here’s Nolan Gorman. He was a strikeout victim his first time. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Next offering is fouled back. Ah, he doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. That’s hard hit on the line. Reaching for it and brings it in. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Now it’s the right fielder, Jordan Walker. Fly to center his first time. Miller picks over. Win dives back in safely. And a foul ball. Man at first, one away. Pitch misses. And one and one. One and one. Padres swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Puts it away for the out. Now betting number 63 Yelpo. Next up for the Cardinals. He popped out his first time. outside low. Ball one. Just missed. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Swinging a foul out of play. Ripped to short, throws to first. And that is that. So, one left for the Cardinals. They’re still down. It’s two zip. Back here in San Diego, John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton and set to get us started. Bottom five, Jose Glacius. Liberator back to work and that misses and it’s one and0. That one at the knees for a strike. And that’s in for a strike. and downstairs. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. There’s a swing and a drive. Scott ranging back and that one is off the wall. Not stopping. He’s going for three and he’s got a leadoff triple. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Really nice job staying inside with his hands to fight off that pitch. Man, that cutter was bearing in on him, but he found a way to stay with his approach. Didn’t spin off it and he hit it pretty well. runner at third. Nobody out. Diaz getting ready to hit that pitch in for a strike. Go and one. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Sunonny Gray getting loose out there. Palante warming up as well. And that one fouled off. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Runner at third here. Nobody out. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Just a slow ground ball this time. Donovan in plenty of time to first. That’s out number one. And a run comes in to score. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground. Brought that run in. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Bowl for two in this one. And first offering is fouled off. Fernando Tatis Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. He two and ball one and down on strikes he goes. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, you could tell he wasn’t expecting that ball to break back in on him. He may have been looking for something away. Maybe something soft, but that slider on the inside corner absolutely froze him. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Burlson makes the grab and that’s the inning. But they push across one run on one base hit. No errors and no one left on. We’re through five. It’s the Padres’s three and the Cardinals nothing. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Nick Pavetta. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal, and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. Petta. So, digging in, Victor Scott. First time up was a pop out. Victor Scott. Out to short and it’s through for a hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Back to the top of the lineup, Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. And that’s a strike. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Scott gets his lead at first with nobody out. Goes down swinging for the strikeout. and an excellent job keeping it right there. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Now, the number two hitter, Ivonne Herrera, struck out on just three pitches last time inside. And that’s ball one. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base, but this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. The Padres’s leading by three. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Pavetta checks over to first and he’s back. That one’s in there. And a count one and one. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. The Glaciius. That’s one double play. They can’t seem to break through. Inning over. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Hard of the order. 345. Coming up, it’s the Padres’s three and the Cardinals nothing. back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Sunny Gray. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s Manny Machado to start it off. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Oh, hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Oh, yeah. You’re on. You’re on. Good job. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. fast ball for a strike. You know, these Padres’s really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Padres, the 01 swing and a pop off in foul ground. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrating with himself until his next at bat. Now, here’s Xander Bogarts now. Let’s keep it going. Runner on the go. Out to short and it finds its way through for a hit and out to a board. Raone Lauriano the next up for the Padres’s. Lauriano really thriving with the bat this season here at home. Hey, now let’s go in the dirt. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. That one fouled off. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. That clips the corner. And he chases that one. And there’s two down. Now here’s Jake Cronidworth. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. That’s strike one. First and second, two down here in the bottom of the six. Let’s go. That’s out. The one-1 is fouled off. That one not close. Two balls, two strikes. Got him swinging. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. So they strand a pair. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s three and the Cardinals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the left fielder, Alec Burlson. And that’s outside. There’s the strike. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. Go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. Check swing. He went and count one and two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Here comes Wilson Contreras who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one ripped left field in one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. And they hold him at second. Maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. One out, runner at second. Now up for St. Louis. Mason win. And that one pulled foul. Man at second. Activity in the bullpen. Wanda Peralta, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Adam getting cranked up as well. battling here as he fouls it away. In the air, foul off first. Arise pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting third baseman Nolan Gorman. Nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Man on second, two down. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. Let’s go San Diego. Next offering is fouled back. Broken bat and it’s popped up. And that is that. One hit, one left. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s a Padres’s three and the Cardinals nothing back here at Petco Park. Bottom of the seventh. So digging in now for San Diego. Jose Glacius clips the corner. Strike one. out to center. Scott makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting catcher. Here’s Elias Diaz. Yes. Lifted in the air right center field. Walker sizing this one up. Squeezes it. That’s out number two. Up next for the Padres. Two down. Base is empty. And now Fernando Tatiz Jr. 0 for three in this one. Foul ball and that’s off the inside edge and the count is one and one right side. Walker gets under it. brings it in. And that’ll do it. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Wandi Peralta. 50th time he’s come into a game this year. He’s been relied on out of the pin quite a bit. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker. The Cards in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. And that drops in for a strike. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball as diving stop at second throws from his knees and it beats him. What a play. Well, he looks so comfortable making that play. Dives, comes up with it and then from one knee like he’s just playing catch with his kid. Nice throw across the diamond at first. And here’s the catcher, Johel Po. He’s been a great free agent sign. Breaking ball misses down and away. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. One down, base is empty. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Ground ball up the middle. Bogards handles the chance onto first. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Two outs. Space is empty. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. Peralta, 33 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Now, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. And he tries to drag bun towards first. He takes it himself to the bag. And that’ll do it. And we’re back onto the bottom of the eighth. And here’s the first baseman, Luis. Arise. Arise. Gray back to work. Late on that fast ball. 0 and one. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. Nice. Here’s Manny Machado now. And the first pitch misses for ball one. arise on at first. Nobody out. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Gets a swing and a miss with the sweeper. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Let’s go. And down on strikes. That Kay is his third of the game. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Line drive and that’s just foul. That one ripped back there. Slams into the wall and hangs on. Outstanding catch right there. And I love the commitment that he showed. He knew that the wall was close, but was determined to make that catch and a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact. Bogarts in the box now. No balls in a strike. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. The shorts stop takes the ball. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. Handles, throws to first. Inning over. One left for San Diego, but they lead it three nothing. Now pitching. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Robert Suarez. He’s been so good against lefties. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan, 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Some hitters are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That misses and the count now even up. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than this one. Swung on and hit well way back there. Going gone. Home run number 10 on the year. It’s 3-1. Just relentless. This team will not quit. Well, I’m sure there’s a big grin on his face right now, Boo. He’s probably had some of those that didn’t stay fair, but off the bat, it looked like it was going to been foul. Was able to keep it in there. Tucked it nicely, and he gets the jog around the bases. Good for him. And here is Ivon Herrera. First pitch misses. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. That one a triple digits. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. Tap foul at the plate. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top of the ninth. Swang at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. All over that one right there. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a tee. Now the left fielder, Alec Burlson, 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. Got him and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. In an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. This is the guy they turned to to get the most important outs of the ball game. But they’re going to make him work to get this save. Right through there for a strike. Here stands at first with one out. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box, got a pitch he liked, and he got it done. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Two on, one out. That’s ripped into the outfield. Out of here. A three-run homer. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 43. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance and they found a way to fight back big time. Most times it’s the pitcher looking at the scoreboard for velocity, but in this case it’s the hitter. He just turned around triple digits at the dish. I don’t even know how he saw that pitch. Maybe he didn’t, but he got a home run out of it. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Robert Suarez will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Jason Adams. He has a great slider with tons of movement. One down and stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Gorman. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. One down. Base is empty. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Hard ground ball. Base knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting right fielder Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker now at the plate. 0 for three with two flyyous and a ground out. Let’s go. First pitch just misses. On the corner for a strike. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Typically that high fast ball, if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end, which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it. And it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. Poso stands in now and watches strike one. Highfly ball out to left field. Lauraniano settles under it. Nabs it. And that is that. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Jojo Romero. A chance at his first save of the year. Number 59, Jojo Romero. Well, one-run game stepping in for San Diego, Raone Lauraniano. Oh, Gloriano. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. looking to get the tying run on base. This one belted deep left field on its way. Gone. He circles the bases. His 16th homer of the year. And they tie it up. It’s 44. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage. Even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Croninworth the next to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. And another ball action in the St. Louis bullpen number 49 preparing to come on if needed. Nobody on, nobody out. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And that one fouled off. Downing ball here. Rolls. Foul and it remains two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Glacius. Josea Glaciius the next up for the Padres’s. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So, a man aboard now with one away. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And now, let’s see if they force some action with Good Wheels on the bases. And now it’s Elias Diaz. And that is out of play. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. One down. Winning run onto first. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. way to lay off that pitch down. That’s a little bit low. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Fernando Tatiz Jr. in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. swing and he breaks his bat. Reaching down, makes the catch. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. outfield deep here trying to prevent anything over their heads. That one hammered but pulled foul trying to send this extra innings. That’s down and in. A slider missed. That missed by a lot and a count two and one and misses inside. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Misses the zone and he gets him to chase. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. And ball four, two aboard. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast ball. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pad. Jojo Romero is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for new arm of the mound for the Cardinals number 49. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. First and second, two outs. And now the first baseman, Luis Arazz. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Now, just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Pitch misses there and now it’s even one and one. Winning run in scoring position with two away. That’s a strike and he inches closer to getting out of the jam. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Two on, two outs, and a foul ball. He stays alive. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. All even now at four a piece And welcome back to the ballpark. On to extra innings. Now up for St. Louis. Victor Scott. That one missed. Well, it’s kind of deflating. You blow that lead in the bottom of the ninth. So, here’s a new opportunity. Hit the reset button. Try to get some more runs and then close it out in the bottom half of this one. The one and that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit the 1-1. And there’s a ball and he chases a high fast ball there. swinging a miss. That one in the dirt. Beats him for the first out and that completes the strike out. Nice job behind the plate there. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position, Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered here in this one. Late swing, fouled to the left. Swang and a miss. There’s the change up. A little anxious, a little aggressive early in the count. Too much for me. That one just misses. It’s a ball and two strikes. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you get hurt outside with a breaking ball. Next offering way off the plate. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Squang on belted way back there. It’s got a chance. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. The run scores from second and they lead it in the 10th. In there. He’s saved. Rley gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Just a beautiful triple from start to finish. Got a pitch he could drive, turned on it, and hammered it out front into the gap. Right out of the box. I love how he was hustling, and I think he knew he was going for three as soon as it touched down. One down, runner at third. And the batter now, Ivon Herrera. swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. He’s got it. Runner tagging from third. He’s in to score on the sack fly and it’s a two-run lead in extra innings. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Jason Adam done for the day. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Jeremiah Estrada into the game. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Alec Burlson will hit next. 0 for four with three strikeouts and he’s grounded out in there at the knees. That’s strike one just missed. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Next offering is in for a strike. Chopped to the right side over to first. That’s the third out. So, two runs in the inning, only one hit, no errors, and nobody left on. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Cardinal six, Padres’s four. On to the bottom of the tenth. Here’s the third baseman, Manny Machado. in the dirt to third. Tag got him. Well, you want to see guys aggressive out there on the base paths, but you also want to see them smart as well in making their decisions. And right there, couldn’t really tell how far away that ball was. So if that’s the case, you got to shut it down. He gets caught stealing there, takes himself out of scoring position. That one ripped right center field. This one looks like trouble. Now he’ll turn for second. In safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. One out, runner at second. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill in there at the knees. Strike one. right through there for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. And they’re down to their last out. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. That one misses. Ball one with the tying run at the plate. And the home team trying to pull it out. And that one finds its way through. And they hold him at third 90 ft away with two out. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him. Boy, it’s hard to say. That runner on second to start extras is critical and you want to make sure you don’t waste him. If they don’t score this inning, there’ll be some second guessing for sure. Raone Lauraniano the next up for the Padres’s. Outside corner, there’s a strike. with the winning run at the plate. And here in extra innings and fouled off. The Padres’s down to their final strike. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Runners on first and third. Two away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this is a big win on the road and going extras into 10. uh so hard to pull those out, but I think this team did a great job of keeping the crowd out of the ball game late. When you can do that, it kind of calms everything down, keeps the adrenaline of the opposing team down a bit, and you can steal a win and get out of here happy. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
