MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Oakland Athletics – Aug 2, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
and welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks going up against the Athletics. First pitch coming at you right after the break. All right, just about set to go. And on the mound for the A’s in this one, Luis Severino. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boo. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. But he knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Corbin Carroll, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch 706. Swung on. Belted. That one’s carrying. And it’s gone. What a start to this one. His 22nd homer of the year. And they grab the lead. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, we see this so much more today. Lineups with pop in the leadoff spot. And it really puts the pitcher in a tough spot out there where he has to execute right away. You can’t just get over a couple of strikes to settle in, get comfortable because at the plate that guy’s looking to do exactly what he just did. start the game off with a huge bang. Marte stands in here. Tried to hold back his swing there, but went around, swings and misses, and it’s 0 and two. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. Highf fly ball out towards left field. Going back onto the track and he makes the catch. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavello. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustment. So if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Heraldo stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Right through there for a strike. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front, so off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast. Butler makes the grab and there are two outs. Two down, base is empty. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Adrien Del Castillo. Del Castillo measures 5′ 10 in, 210 lbs. And he’s usually a catcher. Today, he gets off and makes the grab and that’s the inning. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. Back after this on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the mound today, Brandon F. Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. We go to the bottom of the first. And now, the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. And the first pitch misses for ball one. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. The pitch. That one missed. Swaying at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. Just kind of sliced that one into center. Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Stepping in, Nick Curts. Seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Batting average this month over 400. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Kurts working on a massive campaign right now. Putting up some big home run numbers. Well, we’ve seen him flex some impressive power this season and there’s still a lot of time to go. If he can keep up this pace he’s on, we could be in for something really special. Grounded to third. Could be two. Alexander to second. Plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. And next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. There’s the strike. No balls. One strike. Two outs. Base is empty. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back there. And that one is off the wall. And he’s in at second with a two out double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Punched that one down the line for extra bases. And that was an excellent job going with the pitch on the outside. Got his bat on plane and just drove it. So, runner at second, two down. Next to hit, Shay Langalers. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. And the first offering is not close. Well, here’s a chance right here for one of the better hitters on this roster to get him on the board in the first thanks to the three-hole hitter extending the inning. Good at bat with two outs. Pitch misses there. Two and0. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Man on second. Two down. Slice the other way and foul. Let’s go, baby. That one at 95 missed up top. And that’s ball three. Tyler Soderstrom in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So now two on and two outs. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. First and second, two outs. Tyler Soderstrom will hit next. Closed but called the ball. One and0 and downstairs. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Tap foul at the plate. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. bows that off to the left and will do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Ryan drive base hit runner around third on his way to the plate. He scores and the A’s tie it up. It’s an RBI single. It’s 1-1. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. Back to the mound. He’s got it. Tosses to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. All even now at 1-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. And now here is Tristan English. Severino back to work. Fouled off. He was late. And it’s one and one. Boog, one of our favorites. Jerry Hillsdale umpiring behind home plate in this one. Pretty much by the book with his strike zone. And because he’s so by the book, you’ll sometimes see pitchers questioning him. They’ll make a good pitch on the edge of the zone, want the strike, and not get the call. But most of the time, Jerry gets it right. He’s a good one. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience? and what the strike zone is like. Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four guys, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. And it’s fouled away. Almost got it. Oh, two strikes tied up here in the early going. That’s off the inside corner and a count now. Even up and there’s a ball. on the ground and that’s just foul. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. One down, base is empty. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Drilled out towards left center field. That one is back and it’s caught just in front of the wall. Man, is he fast. It’s so fun to watch. Alex Thomas. Two outs. Space is empty. Here’s the center fielder, Alec Thomas. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. headed towards the corner. Cortez makes his way towards it. Won’t get to this one. It drops foul. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that’s strikeout number 100 on the year. Nothing across here this half. Now to the bottom of the second. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the rookie right fielder, Carlos Cortez. That one to first. English takes it himself. Leadoff man retired here in the second. Luis Orias. Here’s Luis Orias. How about this one, Boo? In 2023, Aras hit grand slams for Boston in back-to back plate appearances. They happened on different days, but he still became the first Red Sox player to do it since Jimmy Fox in 1940. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. That one missed. One out. Base is empty. And that’s ball four. That’s ball four. Take your base. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Daryl Hern and that misses. And that is ball one man at first. one away. And that one missing low. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. There’s the strike. That’s the third and it goes just foul. Still two and two after the foul ball. Fights it off. You’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Good eye in that spot. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire. And out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Got him. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping he’d get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. Back to the top of the lineup. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. One for one. He let off the bottom of the first with a single on the ground right side. Marte throws to first in time. That’s the third out. Inning over. The A’s strand one. Score remains tied 1-1. New inning getting started. Here’s the catcher, James McCann. It feels like we might be headed towards a rain delay if the weather doesn’t ease up, Chris. Yeah, the umpire and crew are going to pay attention to how the weather is impacting this game. And the moment it becomes dangerous, I think is the moment we’ll be forced to take a break. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. left field. Sodro away third base. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Get out of here. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So that will bring up the top of the order with one away. Waste no time there. Pretty good spot hard and inside. But that’s a perfect example of keeping your hands inside the ball tight to the body. The ability to take that back up the middle shows his approach is to use the entire field. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. This is Corbin Carroll. That’s outside. And that’s ball one. And there’s a foul ball. Alexander the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Ruer takes off pitch in for a strike. Throw to second. Wow, what a great throw from his knees right there. You’re not going to see that every day. Such a long throw from the plate to second base. So to have no bottom half behind it, but still deliver a seed on target. So impressive. And most catchers practice that throw, but not many have the arm strength to actually make it work in a game. Two outs inside and it’s two and two. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Oh, he hit him. You hit him. And that got him pretty flush. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. So, two down. Here’s Catel Marte. fly to left his first time. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Next pitch in for a strike and a count. One and one. Severino throws to first. Carol back on a dive. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side up the middle. Hern get the out on Marte. That’s the third out. One left for the Diamondbacks. Still tied 1-1. as we go to the last of the third. Now the number two hitter, Nick Curts. Swinging a miss and one and one. got him swinging for the strike out. And that’s strikeout number 100 on the year. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. And the batter now, Brent Rooker line to second, snagged on the bounce. It’s there. And that’s a great play. Now batting catcher Shay Langalers. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. That misses and it’s one and0. Right through there for a strike. The one-1 is fouled off. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the offbeat pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Nothing doing there for the A’s. School remains deadlocked at one. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Peralo. and he pumps it a strike. You know, these Dbacks as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. Makes the grab. One down. Now hitter Adrien Castillo. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s 0 for one. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. All tied up. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is down low. One and one. Lifted in the air right center field. Cortez sizing this one up. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two down. Batting first. And now the first baseman Tristan English. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. English 27 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2019. He swings and fouls one off. Ball to strike and that’s in there at the knees for a strike. It’s just been an impressive outing so far. Continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down. That’s what’s been key. Two down. Doon swing and a ball lifted in the air. Cortez moving under this one. Hauls it in to end the inning. We go to the bottom of the fourth. Tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go. Bottom four now. The left fielder Tyler Soderstroke and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. You know, these A’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. McCarthy sizes this one up and it’s caught for the out. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Miguel Anduhar the next to hit grounded out his first time. That is upstairs for ball one. That missed. That’s a ball. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. No strikes. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. Hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. There’s the strike. Fouls one away. And now three and two. And a seed into center. That’s a base hit. And they have their first hit since the first inning. Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. Grounded out his first time up and that gets the top of the zone for a strike. on Duhar stands at first with one out. Next pitch is outside. Oh, he’s really working in the way of this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Next offering is fouled back. That’s the ball in the dirt. Tag save at second and good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. Well, that right there erases the chance at the inning ending double play. So, good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch. Changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way. Got him looking and he did not like the call. Most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base paths and can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat. You’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now Luis Rias first off and it just misses one and0. Oh, man at second and fouled off. That’s down and in. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Swing and a pop up. Foul territory for the catcher. Drops into the glove. That is the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We’re headed to the fifth. All tied 1-1. All set for the start of the unit. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Jake McCarthy. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Severino back to work. That pitch in for a strike and one. Well, these Diamondbacks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. And that one hit to first. He takes it on his own and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas now struck out swinging his first time. Swinging a foul straight back. The 01 and a foul ball. that just misses. And it’s one and two. Two and two. Down and in. Moved his feet. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. One down. Base is empty on the outside corner. Got him looking. Here is James McCann. fly to left his first time. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Ripped to short and Arizona is set down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona. Halfway home. All even, one a piece. We head to the bottom of the fifth and the batter will be the shorts stop, Daryl Hernades. It really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called. This rain is not letting up. Yeah, and if we do get a delay, the unfortunate thing is the clock’s going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won’t be able to keep their arms warm forever if it’s a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early. Comebacker to the mound, slings to first. One up, one down. Now, the center and now the center fielder Lawrence Butler one for two. And the first pitch misses for ball one. 10. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. This one could be trouble. Safely into second. He’s got a double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. One out, runner at second. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Bowl for two in this one. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. One ball, no strikes. Man at second. Right through there for a strike. And a count one and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Just off the inside edge. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Swinging a ground ball. throw to first in time. He’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Rooker now at the plate. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. Swing and a miss. looked off balance that time. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. The throws offline. He’s safe. And a 21 ball game now. Well, he comes through clutch with the RBI single. That was big. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And now a chance for Shay Langelers. A strike out and a walk. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. 0 and one. A’s leading by a run. That was the sweeper, but it missed. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Anthony Dclafani up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 27, a left-hander also throwing in the air. Right field, nabs it, and the inning is over. But the RBI single pushes across a run as the A’s are on top. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. Here’s the third base. Bla1 Alexander. Alexander down the middle for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And that one fouled off outside low now. One and two. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. That one misses. Two balls, two strikes. That’s a really good take. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another 2-2 to third on Duhar. zips it across. Now one gone in the top of the six. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. So up next, Corbin Carroll. He’s already homerred here in this one. Swang and a miss. And that’s strike one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And that is a good eye on a pitch down low. One and two count. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Next pitch is downstairs. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count, he’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. Yeah, that’s too high. Now, one down, base is empty. Oh, that plunked. Got him. And that’s now twice he’s been hitting this one. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. Singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Oh, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Carol, the base runner at first with one out. One and one. Squirts away a little bit. Nothing doing. Count moves to one and one. And now two on the one. Way to lay off that pitch down. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field going back. feeling for the wall as he makes the catch. Excellent play out there and he does it in a huge spot. That wall, it can very easily jar the ball loose when you bang into it. So that could have been a really different outcome. Now it’s the short stop. Peraldo Peromo runners low. safe at second and he easily steals the bag outside and it’s 2 and 0. ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning. One left for Arizona. They’re down two to one. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pincher on the mound. Anthony Dclani. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Tyler Soderstrom getting ready to hit. Leftielder Tyler just inside and that one hammered pops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. Now the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. man at second. And that one is popped in the air. Shallow center and that’ll fall for a base hit. The run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single. It’s 3-1. Well done. Drives in the run. Kind of got it off the end of the bat as he punched up the middle there. maybe pulled off that outside pitch just a little bit, but he stayed on it long enough to get something on it. So, digging in, Carlos Cortez on the ground to the left and foul ball. Outside activity in the bullpen. Kendall Graveman, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Number 27 also throwing out to Short. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And they don’t get an out on the play. First and second, no outs. And here is Luis Rias. He’s 0 for one. And that misses off the outside edge. One out. Foul ball there. The A’s looking to add another. The 1-1 is fouled off. Not close with that one. Two and two. And there’s the ball. There’s the ball. Full count. That one lace to center in a base hit on Duhar around third. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. It’s 4-1. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Next up for the A’s, Daryl Hern. Well, bottom of the order here, Boo, you got to go right after this guy as they look to pick up an add-on run and the number nine guy at the plate. Check swing. No appeal. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count. Just not able to square it up. Right back to the mound. Could be an easy two. Over to Pertomo. Next one on to first double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Butler. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Line drive, base hit, runner in from third to extend their lead. It’s an RBI single. It’s 5-1. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Takes an inside pitch and just lays it over there to left field. And that’s all he had to do is get up to the outfield grass to push that run across. Now, the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. That’s it for Dcliffani. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. pitcher on here. Number 27 bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Two outs, runner at first. Nick Curts will hit next. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. Snap throw to first. Pitch misses. Ball one. Butler the runner at first with two gone. hit in the air center field. Thomas gets under it and that is the third out of the inning. So they get three runs on five hits, no errors and one man left. We’re through six full. It’s the A’s five and the Diamondbacks won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top of inning number seven. Now it’s the DH. Adrien Del Castillo Castillo called strike right there. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Number 49 preparing to come on if needed. Lopez warming up as well. That’s out to center field. Butler pulls that one down and there’s one down. Now batting the first Tristan English digs in now. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. The Diamondbacks down by four here in the top half of inning number seven. On the ground out to short and he’ll be safe at first. Well, that’s a pick you want to come up with as a first baseman. That’s how you win that gold ball. But it’s never on him to take the error on a throw like that. And he’ll probably tell you he should have picked his teammate off, but he gave it a good effort, just couldn’t get it to stick. Jake McCarthy now at the plate. Deal one. That one’s upstairs. All one in the dirt but kept close. Foul ball still a one and two count. Next offering misses down and away. That one outside and now three and two. Swimming misses. Struck him out. Now up next for Arizona, Alec Thomas, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Ball one there. That’s in swing at a line drive. Ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. James McCann in now. A guy who’s turned himself into a good framer. was originally drafted by the Tigers. Second round pick in 11. First pitch and that’s in for a strike and McCann fouls it off. in the dirt. English on second. Thomas at first. Two out of the inning. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strike out. And that is the inning. Diamondback strand of pair. They’re down 5-1. Set for the last half of the seventh. Now Brent Rooker and that’s in the dirt. And now two and nothing and another ball. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk. And that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. Catcher might want to go talk to him. Here’s the catcher to hit. Shay Langalers known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. Lead runner to second. It’s a two on and nobody out. First pitch swing in. Went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Sodstrom in the air left field. McCarthy gets under it, tries to make the play, but it’s fouled. First and second, no outs here in the bottom of the seventh. Next offering is fouled back. Caught him looking for the K. Next to hit, Miguel Anduhawk Sigy. He’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. And that one is in for a strike. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. This one in the dirt and that’s downstairs. And it’s two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his own, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Misses inside and a count is three in one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense booth. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. So up next, Carlos Cortez, one for three. This is again five in a row. Two walks in the inning already. And he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. This one popped up. Infield fly called there. Now that is Luis Rias up next for the A’s. First pitch misses. Rooker at third. Langaliers over at second. On Duhar on at first with two down. Swinging a miss and the count one and one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That misses the zone. It’s two and two. two two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Can’t glove it cleanly, but they get the out at first and that’ll do it for the inning. A’s threatened, but leave them loaded. They leave this one though 51. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Number 49. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck that one back there. Makes the catch gliding out of the warning track. Really nice job to get your first down of the ball game. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s already homered in this game. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat, automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. 3-1 is on the way. And that is out of play. One down, base is empty. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball, but missed the spot. You know, I think he’s okay with that outcome. It wasn’t an intentional walk, but he wasn’t exactly trying to attack the zone either. Catel Marte up to the plate. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base, but this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. Full at bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. The Athletics leading by four and we’re in the top of the eighth and one and two. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than to have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Way side gets out of the way. Deep drive down the line. Foul ball. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Swing and a miss. No advance. Good job behind the dish. That’s that classic wipeout slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. Peromo in the box now. No balls in a strike. And that drops in for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Two outs. That misses the zone. Now one and two. His understanding the strike zone very impressive. That was a very close O2 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. inside and he had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. So first and second with two outs and now the DH Adrien DelCastillo 0 for three in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Movement in the bullpen. Jacob Lopez getting ready to go. Miller, the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Two on, two outs. That smashed towards center. Butler puts it away. And that is that. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 43. Now pitching for Arizona. Number 43 Kyle. So digging in Terrell Hern offering is fouled off. That one pushed foul. Fast ball is outside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. John Curtis, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Good eye right there. Two balls, two strikes. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And now it’s three and two. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Swang in a soft liner out to left field and that’s just foul. gets under and pops it up. Marte makes the catch for the out and there’s one away. Now batting center Lawrence Butler. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. just missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Swinging a miss at a slider. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. And that one is lifted in the air. Thomas makes a nice run of catch. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Curts in now takes ball one off the play. fought off foul. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning and delivers outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Makes the catch in and over. And the A’s are gone in order. They’re up 5-1. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Jacob Lopez. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. English in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Ben Bowden getting loose out there. Next pitch is outside. That’s a little bit low. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. Next offering is in for a strike. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. That one down the line and it goes just fouled. line drive. Base hit right center field. Had a good start to the inning. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. He didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. And here is Jake McCarthy. And that misses. And that is ball one. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Swinging a foul straight back. English gets his lead at first with nobody out. started to go after it. Now we’ll look down to third and that’s going to be ruled a swing. Alec Thomas getting ready to hit. Not even close there. One and0. The Dbacks down by four here in the top of the ninth. And that’s off the inside edge. And the count is 2 and 0. That’s a strike. That one fouled off. Two and two. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. And that just misses. Really nice two- strike pitch right there. Very tempting, but couldn’t get the chase. Ground ball right side. Could be two to second. There’s one throw to first, but he beat it. Diamondbacks down to their final out. And now the catcher comes up to him. James McCann 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and0. Right through there for a strike. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. The Diamondbacks down to their final strike and a swing and a miss and that is the ball game. I don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team. Every ball club wants to be dominant at home. Winning a game like this just helps to boost the confidence and makes you look forward to coming out again for the next one. 51 is how it ends. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. Drop it.
