All right, Giant fans. on today’s Locked On Giants podcast episode where we’ve got uh a look at the rookies. We’re going to take a look at each of the draft picks. I’ve got some basically one main point, a few observations if you will, on how their camp has gone so far after nine practices. So, that’ll be up first. Then in segment two, some general takeaways really from training camp. what we have seen so far, things I like, things I don’t like, concerns that I have and um you know, just where maybe things might be headed. Basically, the first part of training camp is kind of over at this point and uh starting next week or starting this week, I should say, the Giants are in preeason game mode. So, it’s going to shift a little bit. So, we’ll talk about that. And then finally, we have a segment called Follow the Leader. All right. I’ll tell you what that’s all about when we get there. But that’s basically something that the Giants, let’s just say, haven’t really had the last few years, and they finally do have. So, I’ll explain more about that once we get there. So, again, welcome on in to everybody. Let’s get into it. All right, the Giants rookie draft class. Uh, a lot of promise coming out uh when this class was announced, but let’s go through each guy individually. I’ll tell you what I’ve kind of, you know, taken note of, any concerns, what I want to see, and so forth. So, we’ll kick things off with Abdul Carter, the outside linebacker, number three overall. Two words to describe Mr. Carter. Real deal. He is good, folks. Really good. Now, what’s interesting about uh Abdul Carter is most of his snaps this summer have come with the second team defense. That will change obviously. It’s just a matter of time before they figure out where they’re going to put him in with the first team. But, you know, remember Abdul Carter has only been playing outside linebacker for about a year, you know, his last year at Penn State. So, the Giant coaches are still working with him to kind of get him to better um understand the intricacies of playing outside linebacker. You know what? When he has played inside, you know, when he’s gone uh at inside linebacker against the first team offense, he’s looked pretty good. So, I wonder if if maybe they’re going to use him in that capacity early on um to take advantage of his quick first step and have him beat the interior of offensive lines. So, he has just really been good. Now, when he did get some first team snaps with the defense, um that was when Brian Burns couldn’t practice um after having that collision with Juan Delale Robinson. And Abdul Carter against Germaine Aluminor, that kid held his own, let me tell you. Quick first step. He’s got a wicked spin move. I mean, he’ll just make you dizzy looking at it. And when you consider that he’s been that good so far and he’s still learning the outside linebacker position, the sky is the absolute limit for this kid. He’s that good, folks. Real deal. So, I can’t wait to see him when they uh start playing the preseason games. It’s going to be quite the sight for sure. All right, let’s go now to the other first round pick, Jackson Dart, quarterback. Two words to describe him. I’m going to say steady improvement. Now, again, improvement is never linear. He’s going to have some ups and he’s going to have some downs. He had a a little bit of a down day uh on Saturday um with, you know, making some of the throws and whatnot. But what I will say about him, what I’ve noticed, he’s getting the ball out of his hand a lot quicker. Um and he’s becoming more and more comfortable in this offense. And you know, he even said the other day something to the effect of, you know, hey, you know, we were running plays that I wasn’t necessarily familiar with, and now I’m starting to become familiar with those plays. So, he is doing a much better job of getting the ball out of his hands quicker. That was not the case sometimes in the spring. That was not the case early in the the uh early part of training camp. So, um, Jackson Dart also not afraid to chuck the ball down the field. Now, some of the throws he’s made, probably shouldn’t have made, but you know, that’s what practice is for. You find out what throws you can make, what throws you can’t make, and you learn from that. All right. Um, and you know, the other day, I think it was what, Tuesday, he that was the day that Brian Dable turned off the radios and basically said to both the offense and the defense, call your own plays. And Jackson Dart was inserted at the quarterback uh for the Giants on offense. And even though they didn’t bring home the drive, Dable spoke about how he liked the kid’s thought process. And that’s kind of interesting to pay attention to because different quarterbacks have different levels of autonomy when it comes to, you know, changing plays, calling plays, and so on and so forth. So, for example, Russell Wilson being the veteran that he is, he’s probably going to have very few if any restrictions when it comes to audible calling audibles or, you know, changing things up a little bit. Whereas Jackson Dart being a rookie, they might, you know, keep him a little bit closer to the vest, so to speak. But Jackson Dart so far has done a really good job with learning that. I think we’re going to see a lot of him in the preseason. My guess is we’ll probably see more of him like like in quarter two or the second half of games because I do think the Giants this year are going to give the starters a little bit more work. Some starters in any rate, give them a little more work that maybe what they’ve gotten in the past. So, I’m looking forward to seeing Jackson in a live game because those live reps, there is absolutely no substitute for that and I think they’re very important. Okay, Darius Alexander, round three, defensive tackle. I got to admit, um, I realize this kid’s coming from a small school. All right. And he’s got a lot to kind of learn at this level, but he’s kind of been quiet, I think, this camp. Matter of fact, you know, I’m going to go into it like in the next segment. The entire defensive line has actually kind of been quiet, save for Dexter Lawrence for those few opportunities that he has seen. But, you know, with Darius Alexander, he’s been in and out of the first team uh defense. Um, and right now, it just seems like he’s behind Rake Nunes, Roach, Roy Robertson, Harris, and Elijah Chapman. So, a lot of work still to be done there. Now, to be fair, remember Darius Alexander missed the spring with some kind of undisclosed ailment. So, he’s got some catching up to do, but you know what? He’s got good athleticism and I think he’s going to become a very good pass rusher at this level. So, still a lot more for him to show, but I think he’s kind of in catch-up mode right now. All right, round four. Running back Cam Scataboo. He is an absolute ball of energy. Okay. He has an attitude that basically screams, “I will not be denied or come and stop me if you dare.” So, I kind of like that bravado. Very good hands out of the back field. It’s like you get the ball within his area code and he will make the catch. All right. I’ve seen him make even some difficult catches. Um, including that one the other day where he caught a ball that bounced off a teammate’s helmet and he caught it. He was out of bounds, but he still made the catch. So, really, really good hands. The thing that I’m concerned about with Scataboo is his durability right now. Now, remember at the end of the spring last uh you know, a few months ago, he missed the back half of the OTAAS and the entire mandatory mini camp with a leg injury. Now, I don’t know if it was a hamstring or a groin. I think it was a soft tissue issue. So, I don’t know exactly what it is, but guess what? After missing a couple days of practice this past week, he came back on uh Friday, got injured again, had a setback, as Brian Dable called it. So, now, who knows how long he’s going to be. All right. If it’s a hamstring, he could be looking at missing several days because you cannot rush hamstrings. You just can’t. And I think if he ends up missing preseason games, that’s going to potentially set him back a little bit. So Cam Scataboo, you know, when he eventually does get in there, I’d like to see how he does with pass pro because we really haven’t seen a whole lot of that. I do like the game that he plays, the toughness, but that he’s got to get over that injury hump. That is a huge, huge concern right now where he is concerned. All right, Marcus Bo, round five, offensive lineman. Now, Bo has been working both at left tackle and right tackle with the twos. He’s looked pretty good. You know, I don’t know if he’s necessarily at the point now where he can maybe challenge for the swing tackle role. I think he probably needs a little bit of development, but I got to tell you, he has looked pretty good all things considered. quick, um, good setup, keeps his pad level low. There’s a lot to like about this kid, and I think he’s going to ultimately be a good one. Um, whether he gets to play this year, I don’t know, but there’s promise there for sure. All right, Thomas Fedoni, I round seven tight end. He is a very intense player who’s kind of hard on himself when he makes a mistake. Um, but as I’ve been kind of saying with him all along, needs to add strength. I don’t know if he’s got enough strength to match up with some of the NFL defensive ends and bigger boys that he’s going to be facing when he has to block. All right. He he he’s not just he can’t just be a a pass catcher. He’s got to do blocking as well. I don’t know if he has that strength just yet to to be a contributor in that regard or to at least beat out Chris Manhurz who is the incumbent blocker if you will. Um the other thing with with Fedoni, he didn’t really play special teams in college partially because of all the injuries he dealt with. He’s learning that now. U now the thing with Fedoni, he did not practice on Saturday. He got dinged in Friday’s practice. Don’t know if it was a concussion or what it was, but that’s something to keep an eye on because, you know, you want to see these young guys in the preseason game. So, I don’t know what his availability is. We’ve got some days yet before, you know, that comes down to, you know, before they have to make that decision, but um you want to see how he does on special teams because that’s going to be his ticket onto this roster if he indeed has a a spot on this roster. And finally, Corey Black, the quarterback. He’s kind of been stuck at the bottom of that quarterback depth chart. No surprise there. His thing is going to be special teams. It’s that simple. So, you know, we’ll see how he does in the games. Um, he didn’t practice the other day. I think he was held out of practice today as well. Um, didn’t, you know, he wasn’t seen out there. So, still some stuff we need to see from Corey Black, who I could see ending up on the practice squad. I mean, he’s got some talent, but you just got to see a little bit more, I think, from him. All right, Giant fans. Coming up next, we’re going to talk about some general takeaways I have from multiple days of practice. So, don’t go anywhere. I’m your host, Patricia Traina, and we’ve got five days a week, or maybe in this case, it’s going to be six this week because the Giants do have a preseason game on Saturday. So, I will of course have uh a breakdown of that game after it is played, the highs, lows, who stood out, who didn’t, and all that. Um, as far as like game planning and stuff, don’t expect much there because it’s going to be vanilla. But, um, it’s still it’s it’s a form of football. So, we are getting so so close to the actual thing. And I’m excited and I hope you are as well. All right. In this segment, we’re going to talk about some general camp takeaways that I have. um things I like and things I don’t like and things that have me concerned. And I think the first thing I want to talk about are some emerging needs that this team appears to have. And one of them I’d like to see them add more depth at safety. You know, I was kind of hoping Mari Paige would stand out a little bit more than he has and really hasn’t. Um so I I get concerned because you know they have Tyler Nubin and Javon Holland. Behind them is Dne Belton, but not a whole lot after that. Nobody’s kind of really stepped up and sees the bull by the horn. So, I’d like to see them, you know, maybe add another safety. Punt Gunner is is going to be a position, you know, I know they sign Gunnar Ovky, but I’m not really sure he’s a, you know, the ideal candidate to replace Bri Bryce Ford Weaten as a punt gunner. So, I do think they’ll kind of keep an eye out for that as well, especially once the cuts start being made. the defensive line. I alluded to this in the last segment, but let me go into it a little bit more. Other than for Dexter Lawrence, particularly in the one-on- ones and whatnot, it’s been very like meh, for a lack of a better term. I mean, guys are not getting off blocks very often. Um, and you know, look, Rake Dunes Roaches is the incumbent right now and he wasn’t really that great last year, you know, which is why they they went and they upgraded. Um, but right now, I would say he’s holding on to it because guys, look, you know, in pass in the pass rush, run game, you got to get off your blocks and we’re not seeing enough of that on the defensive line. So, we’ll see if that, you know, if that gets better as as the rest of the summer goes on. But that’s a very early concern I have because when it’s Dexter Lawrence and everybody else and Dexter doesn’t have the help that he needs because guys aren’t able to get off their blocks, that’s a problem. Okay. Um, gotta throw kudos to head coach Brian Dable because he listened to something that I actually wrote over on New York Giants on SI and that is accountability. Now look, I get it. Coach Dable does hold guys accountable, but one of the things I had talked about leading into training camp, things that I wanted to see done was to hold guys accountable in public if they made a mistake. And I’m not talking about an honest mistake. I’m talking specifically about pre-nap penalties. And we have seen quite a lot of them in the last few practices. Now, um on Saturday, that number uh shrunk a little bit. It it actually started to shrink on Friday, but what Dable has been doing that I like is that he’s pulling guys out if they commit a pre-nap penalty. The Giants have been absolutely horrible in that area in terms of pre-nap penalties. They are not good enough as of right now to overcome when they set themselves back, particularly on offense. So, you know, I don’t remember the breakdown, but I know last year they had 41 stall drives as a result of penalties, and they were above average, above league average in, I want to say, three of the four pre- snap penalty categories. So, that has got to be cleaned up. They’re making progress in that area, but you want to get those down to like one per game, if that many, preferably none, because look, it’s all a matter of discipline. And if you’re not disciplined, if you’re not hearing the snap count, you don’t know the snap count, whatever the case may be, that’s a problem. Okay. Uh let’s talk about quarterback 2. Now, Cordell Flat, you know, good player, but he gets injured quite a bit. I mean, it it for as long as I can remember, Cordell Flat ends up dealing with some kind of injury in the summer. So, as you know, he’s been in competition with Deontay Banks for quarterback, too. And DeAndre Banks, I talked about it, I think the other day when, you know, he committed a couple pass interference plays where he didn’t even turn around, didn’t even look at to see, you know, that the receiver was slowing down and starting to look for the ball and Banks just, you know, kind of kept his eyes on the receiver as opposed to turning his head around looking for the ball. Well, guess what, folks? He is getting better at that. He is now turning his head around looking for the ball. That’s going to help him tremendously. So, kudos to Deontay Banks because um obviously he got coached up on that and he’s listening and it’s going to make a big difference in his game. All right. I’ve noticed uh throughout the practices fewer concentration drops by the receivers. You know, the concentration drops often come when the receiver catches the ball and then or actually I should say when the ball is kind of coming to them and they’re already thinking about, okay, how am I going to pick up yardage? So that’s part of the, you know, the uh problem with the concentration drops. Haven’t seen a whole lot of those in camp. So that’s a good thing. And then finally, I got to give you a guy who has been quietly having a really, really good camp in my opinion and who might just be the most improved player from last year’s rookie class. And that’s slot quarterback Drew Phillips. Drew Phillips, he’s playing a lot quicker, a lot more confident. You know, he spoke about the lasic surgery that he had in the off season to help improve his vision. He talked about how, you know, prior to having that, he was practically blind, couldn’t see balls in flight and whatnot. Well, he is balling out this this summer. I don’t think he’s gotten enough credit or enough mention of that, but Drew Phillips has been doing a really good job, and I’m really excited to see what his his uh limit is. I don’t think he has a limit. You know, he could I think he could be one of the best slot quarterbacks in the NFL this season. All right, Giant fans, coming up next, follow the leader. Welcome back to Locked On Giants. I’m your host, Patricia Traina. And in this segment titled Follow the Leader, I’m going to talk about something that, you know, I go back and I look at last year’s roster and the makeup of the roster and what was missing from that roster besides, you know, the obvious quarterback play and a few other things. And a big thing that I think was missing that I don’t think gets talked about a whole lot is that the Giants didn’t have veteran leadership at every single position unit. Now, they had veterans at every single position unit, but there’s a difference between being a veteran and being a veteran leader. All right, so what do I mean by that? Let’s start with the quarterback position. For example, the Giants brought back a Dory Jackson to be the veteran in the group when the injuries started and whatnot. and to kind of, you know, show the young guys the way. Well, Adori really wasn’t that much of a leader. He wasn’t as involved with, you know, coaching up his teammates, taking them under, you know, his wing. So, I’m not really surprised that the Giants didn’t make a push to resign him. But, in bringing in Paul Sinado, you look at what Paul Sinado has done. He has taken Deontay Banks under his wing as well as some of these other young quarterbacks. Paul Adibbo has emerged as a leader, right? And that was missing last year from the quarterback room. On the flip side, safeties. Tyler Nuben was a young kid. Um, you know, they had Jason Pinoch in there, but Pinoch wasn’t really a quote unquote leader in the true sense. So, in comes Javon Holland. Javon Holland is taking guys under his wing and helping them be the best that they can be. So, you know, that was missing in that defensive secondary. So, yes, they changed over the coaching staff over there, but they also brought in legitimate leaders who are who are helping their young teammates be their very best selves. So, that got me thinking, okay, what about the rest of the positions on the team? Well, I think you could say they have leaders at every position now. All right, so we just did the defensive secondary. Let’s stay on the defensive side of the ball. inside linebacker. You can say that Bobby O’ Carrick and Mah McFaden are co-leaders. You know, they’re they’re constantly helping out the younger guys. You know, the Deontay Johnson’s, the Darius Moasos. So, they are definitely leaders there. Outside linebacker Brian Burns wears that crown, right? Burns is is is just, you know, what he’s been trying to help, you know, Kavon Tibido up his game. you know, Abdul Carter working with him, Tamman Fox, you know, Burns has been really, you know, a vocal leader there. Defensive line, the king man, Dexter, Dexter Lawrence, he is the leader of that defensive line. Heck, he’s the leader of that defense, period. All right, on the offensive side, take your pick. You know, you got Greg Van Roen who’s a bit of a leader. You’ve got Andrew Thomas who’s a leader. So, you know, you’ve got some guys, Germaine Luminor, you can say, is a leader as well. So, you’ve got a lot of guys who are veteran leaders on that offensive line unit. All right. Quarterback, obviously, Russell Wilson and Jameus Winston. Russ is the starter, so he’s the leader. And you listen to his teammates and how they talk about how much he has brought to the offense, not just in terms of skills, but in terms of leadership. He’s been that good with leadership. You look at tight end, all right, that’s still kind of a young group. Chris Manhurz has been a quiet leader in that group. All right. A veteran guy who’s who they absolutely love for that leadership ability. Receiver Darius Sllayton is the guy. He’s the longest tenur receiver, one of the longest tenure giants on the team along with Dexter Lawrence who both came in at in 2019. So Darius Sllayton is the guy. And again, you go back, you look at interviews with Malik Neighbors last year and he talked about how Darius Sllayton helped him to become a pro. You look at interviews with Jaylen Hyatt or with Juan Delale Robinson and they all give props to Darius Sllayton who goes out of his way to help them. All right. Um, let’s see. Running back Devin Singleary. He’s the guy. All right. Tyrone Tracy’s young. Um, Cam Scataboo was a rookie. They’ve got youth back there. You know, Devin Singleary, you know, I laugh when people say, “Oh, they should trade Devin Singleary.” He’s the leader that they have. And you know, he has made a difference for Tyrone Tracy. Again, you asked Tyrone about Devin Singleary and the effect that he has had on him and it’s it’s glowing. So again, for the very first time, I think in a few years, the Giants have true leadership at every position unit. Now, will that mean that they’re going to be better at every position unit? That remains to be seen. But you know what? They can’t be any worse when they have young leaders, young veterans who take on that leadership role, who try to show their younger guys uh the way, how to do things the right way, both on and off the field. And really, at the end of the day, is that such a bad thing to have? I don’t think it is. But of course, we’ll see how it all comes together. It’s going to start uh with the preseason games. We’ll see how the roster comes together, who stands out, who doesn’t. We’ll have all that for you. obviously, as well as the continued training camp reports and a whole lot more here on the Lockdown Giants podcast. 1. Is it me or do hamstring injuries seem to happen so frequently in the NFL? With today’s technology isn’t there something they can learn to prevent such injuries of able to diagnose someone who may be susceptible to it by tests?

  2. I don’t know how many game we’ll win this season but it sounds like we’ll be fielding a more respectable, competitive team, barring injury. Like none of those 30 point losses.

  3. D Alexander seems a little lazy to me. Heard he's like last in line and no hurry to get in anywhere on everything but hopefully he will learn to show initiative

  4. Russ needs to meet with all his OL guys and him teach his snap count to his guys. Maybe them do that by thereselves on the side after practice or something. Need to put things in perspective that whatever Linemen are struggling with pre snap penalties
