MLB LIVE🔴 Los Angeles Dodgers vs Tampa Bay Rays – Aug 3, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

From inside Tropicana Field here in Tampa Bay, inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch coming your way next. your Tampa Bay Ray. Just about ready to roll today’s starting pitcher, Zack Latell. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Mookie B leading things off and takes a strike. one to the right side and it’s through for a hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Just a simple ground ball the other way. They had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Now the number two hitter, James Outman. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Kicks and deals. Ball. No. One ball, one strike. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Sit him down. Outside low and the count’s even at two. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch up the middle. Nice grab. Here’s the Dodgers lineup now. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. James Outman. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. She didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Freddy Freeman up to the dish. And the slider just misses. One out. Runners at first and second. Little chopper rolls foul. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Now a screamer into the outfield. Squeezes it. Runner tags at second and he moves up a base. So two away with runners at the corners. That is fifth. The right fielder Fernandez. And now to Oscar Hernandez. Keep an eye on this at bat because even though it’s early, it could change the outcome of this game. Look for your pitch and attack it. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Low hustling after it. Drops into the glove. And that’s the third out. Dodgers strand a couple. Now it’s the Rays turn. No score. Back after this on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the hill in this one number 80. And Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that RA down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Number 14, the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Let’s go. Swing and a miss. Gasted right by him. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. And now it’s Brandon Laauo. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. And there’s a foul ball. One out. Base is empty. Next offering is in for a strike and downstairs. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that Next pitch is inside. Two balls, two strikes. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Hit in the air. Center field. Pahes sizes this one up. out number two. Now a look at Kevin Cash’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Rams. And something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure. Chris, right now it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout and they want to do the same thing. and before you know it, you start to get base runners on and you get a big hit and all of a sudden you ride that wave for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use. Swings and misses. No balls, two strikes. Stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Pitch misses there. Ball one. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field and that extends the inning. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. And here is Jonathan Aranda. One ball, no strike. Two outs. Yep. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Here’s a player known for playing better in day games, which is not always the case. I mean, day games are different, boo. Things change from game times to your daily routine, but he sure makes the transition look easy. Inside. Almost got him. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Diaz off of first with two away. Knocks that one away and will do it again. On the ground of first and he can’t come up with it, but they get the out at first and that’ll do it for the inning. The Rays strand just the one. Scoreless after one. New inning getting started. Here’s the center fielder, Andy Pahes. Andy Pah. Pah goes 6’1, 210 lbs, and he was born in Cuba. that catches the outside corner. Strike one. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. Takes low for ball one. That one missed. Ball three. Full count on the inside corner for called strike three. You think he caught him off guard with a fast ball right there, Chris? He didn’t look ready for it. Yeah, no doubt. I think that’s exactly what happened. You looked at the sequence of pitches. He didn’t see anything firm until that last fast ball. So, you got to think he was still sitting off speed and just couldn’t react quick enough to even get a swing off. That’s good pitching right there. The batter will be Michael Conforto. That’s outside one. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Settles underneath it. He makes the grab and there’s two down. Batting it the second baseman, Miguel. Two outs, space is empty. Miguel Rojas steps to the plate for the Dodgers. That’s off the mark and it’s one and0. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Walls and that is the inning. So they go quietly there now to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the inning now for Tampa Bay. Junior Camero. Chris has been a good year for him having already set a new careerh high for RBI’s in a season. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And that is out of play. Got him. And that’s the first out that exists. Next to Josh Low. Low. Ball one. No strikes. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Making the calls behind the plate in this one is Woody Keller. Yeah, and Woody does a pretty good job back there, Boo. He’s got a pretty fair strike zone most of the time. Maybe some inconsistency here or there, but usually he’s back there doing a solid job. And a foul ball. How much were you aware of the umpire scouting report or even who was going to be umpiring? Not a whole lot. I mean, there were a couple of umpires that weren’t real good, but outside of that, you just kind of went into the game, especially back when I was playing. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubous where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. And stepping in, the rookie left fielder, Jake Mangum at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. lifted in the air right center field. Hernandez makes the play and that is that. We’ll move to the third with no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now it’s switch hitting third baseman Alex Freeland. Latell back to work. That one to first but it kicks foul. Ball on there. Swinging a foul out of play up and in. Two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Just missed. Full count. foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Has room and he makes the catch. Now batting the short side, Muki. So the lineup flips over and now it’s Mookie Betts. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single. Foul ball there. Betts can claim something not many players can. He’s won the World Series playing in the National League and the American League. Top of the third, no score. Foul ball still 0 and two. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Now two balls and two strikes and he takes full count. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. Hard hit left side. Tosses across to first. So it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. Designated hitter James Outman. James Outman steps to the plate for the Dodgers. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. There’s a swing and a drive. That one’s carrying. And that is gone. And they jump out front. It’s one- nothing. Boo. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. Will Smith to the plate one for one with a single so far. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. We’re here in the top half of inning number three and misses inside. Let maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run. Chris, yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Freddy Freeman waiting to bat for the Dodgers. And that wasn’t even close. Ball four. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Freddy Freeman will come up to hit. 0 for one so far. Line drive base hit. And now they’ll have runners on the corners with two away. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Nice line drive to the pull side. met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Here’s Taskser Hernandez. He’s 0 for one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Two on, two outs. That’s towards center. Sizing this one up. Brings it in. And that’s the third out. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now in Tampa Bay as we go to the last of the third. Matt Feice comes up to hit here. And that one upstairs. Ball one. One ball. Go strike. This one in the air center field. Makes the catch for the out. And there’s one away. Batting n the shortstop stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Taylor Walls. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris thought foul. That was a nice bid right there to try to tie up this ball game. Just couldn’t keep it from bending. Foul. He looked locked in on that swing. pitcher better be careful with him right now. Swung on. Belted. That one’s back. Gone. He leaves the yard to right. And this game is tied. It’s 1-1. Wow. What a clutch swing right there. And now anything can happen in this game. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the back that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive. Shook to the baseball. Squared it up and the back spin buried it out of here. So the batting order turns over. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Fast in for a strike. 0 and one. just he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That one not close. And that’s ball two. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the last half of the third. Next pitch is downstairs. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That’s a walk. Went with another change up, but missed the spot. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch. Wasn’t even much to think about. Ladder number eight at the plate trying to center his first time. He’s 04. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. Runner to go in the air out towards left center. Conforto makes the grab for the second out. The batter number two, designated hitter, Yandi. Yandi Diaz down. A single his first time. Pickoff throw and he’s back in on a dive. That one ripped. Nabs it. And that’s the inning. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. Call even now at 1-1. You’re dialed into the show. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Andy Pah. And that’s outside. You know, these Dodgers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. And now two and one. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Just missed. Three balls, one strike. And that’s in for a strike. And now it’s three and two. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with the punch out. The only guy in the lineup with that strike out. But you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. hit on the ground to the right side and foul ball. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. just not able to put the bat on the ball. Michael Conorto. And here is Michael Conforto 0 for one with a fly out to center. And that’s in there for strike one. All tied up. Top half of inning number four. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Walts on the move. Won’t get to this one. It drops. Foul. One down. Base is empty. Line drive. Fair ball. That play looks routine defensively, but with all of the little nooks, it can get real tricky down in the corner. Kept it to a long single. Nice defensive play. Miguel Rojas at the plate. Grounded out to short in his first trip. Ball one low. Conforto the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Runner takes off. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second. The 1-1. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Next offering down low and in the dirt and a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. out towards right center. That’s well struck. Low going back and that one is off the top of the wall and he’s in at second with a two out double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Here’s the third baseman, Alex Freeland. And there’s the strike. Man on second, two down. Fast ball right back to the mound. The throw to first. That’s a third out. One left for LA. Score remains deadlocked at one. Back here at Tropicana Field. Here’s the first baseman, Jonathan Aranda. That one fouled off. And that’s in for a strike. had a good eye there. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Camo takes the ball as he stands in for the second time. That one almost got him. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. So, a man aboard now with one away. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Fast ball pretty much middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. One down. And now the right fielder Josh Low. And the first offering is not close. That one pulled. Foul man at first. One away. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Ball two off the plate. Three and two now. Ground ball right side and it goes just foul to him and ball forward to a board. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie, he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. First and second, one out. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Jake Mangum. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn two quickly. And that one is inside. Got the dish looking to look the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play boo and fouled off. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. He swings and hits a fly ball center field and it drops in. Throw back in, holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded away. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Activity in the bullpen. Show Otati preparing to come on if needed. trying warming up as well. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Got him looking now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. Oh, that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead. You had the infield back. All you got to do is just put the ball on play on the ground and you drive across. It’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter. Now, I’ll still have a chance, but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs. Taylor Walls now at the plate. He’s already homered here in this one. Right through there for a strike. Camero on third. Low over at second. Mangum at first. Two out of the inning. And it’s one and one. And that one fouled off. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Makes the grab and that ends the inning. Huge opportunity miss there. Onto the top of the fifth we go. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s bets swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. You know these Dodgers doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every. And that’s a fair ball down the right field line. And that’s going to roll a while. Around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Next is the designated hitter, James Outman. Breaking ball in there for a strike. Two bullpen movement for the Rays. Ryan Pepio up and throwing. Boil getting loose as well. One, two. This one in the dirt. that misses. It’s two and two. Swing and a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Mangum makes the catch and there’s one away. Now batting catcher Will Smith. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. The batter now will be Will Smith. This guy makes great contact. One of the best in the game and putting bat on ball. He’s got such quick hands and he’s gaining pitch recognition that keeps him square to the plate. There’s a good chance. Oh, gets dirty over to first. Got him. Nice play. And that may have saved a run. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there. And of course, the most important part was getting the out. Here’s Freddy Freeman. Now, one for two. And that misses. And that is ball one. No ball. No strike. Runner at second. Two down and we’re in the top of the fifth. That one the other way. And that’s the third out. The double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. Last half of the fifth coming up. All tied 1-1. We head to the bottom of the fifth and stepping in for the Rays number 14 Simpson. That clips the zone and one. Well, these Rays need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. And that one is lifted in the air. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. One away. The batter number eight, second baseman Brandon. And now here is Brandon Laauo. Lao measures 5′ 10 in 30 years old now and he was a third round pick back in 2015. Fouled off. He was late. Here’s a 1-1. and a foul ball. Here’s a one-two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Swings and misses. So, he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. You usually are going to see that inside basketball a little longer coming in from the opposite side. That pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball out to short. Betts throws to first in time and the inning is over. Nothing doing for Tampa. Still tied 1-1. Back now in Tampa Bay. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now Tay Oscar Hernandez. Latell back to work. Swaying at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a TE. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Zack Latell will depart and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. On the mound now, Ryan Pepio. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Andy Pahes the next to hit. Go for two in this one. first pitch and he just misses. And that one fouled off with a go ahead run at first. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. And a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Not close with that one. And it’s two and two. And a swing and a miss. And now one away. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Michael Confoto will climb in. Pickoff move to first. Hernandez back in on a dive. First pitch misses. Hernandez at first. One gone. Ball off the plate. tried to back door him with that slider right there, but just missed off the plate. Good pitch though. Here goes the runner. Pitch in for a strike. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. Full count. Miguel Rohos in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Man at second gets a piece there. We’ll do it again and ball four to a board. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. Go ahead. Run on base. Miguel Rojos getting ready to hit. That one off the mark. And that’s ball one. rolled softly but that goes foul. Runners at first and second with one gone and a count one and two. Two on, one out. And that’s downstairs and outside. Way to lay off that pitch down. on the ground. Two ball on a second. They get one and that’s two. Pry in motion there as the second base turns the double play. Nice throw to first. And that’s the way to end the inning. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Show Otani. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid. So, they feel great about handing the ball over to him. And now the first baseman Jonathan outfield playing pretty shallow. There’s the strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Anthony Ba looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. Diaz getting cranked up as well. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Got it. Really had to move for that grab. And there’s one down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And there’s a foul ball. All right, Sing, you know I’m a dork. Show Otani. Go back to May 5th, 2022 at Fenway Park. He tossed a complete game through 99 pitches. Get this, 81 strikes. It was the most strikes thrown with less than 100 pitches in a game since they started tracking pitch counts. That’s just unreal. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. Fights that one away. Still one and two. got him looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. The right fielder covered stepping stepping in. Josh Low Low. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Gets the call. And now it’s even. One and one. And strike two. Two strike misses and the count is two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Rays go in order. One, two, three. Score remains tied 1-1. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Garrett Clevenger. Well, he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin. His strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season. Alex Freeland steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Switch hitter batting right. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one in the air right side low ranging after it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Mookie Betts will make his way to the plate. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Swinging a foul out of play. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. and he swings and lifts one to deep center field and it looks like trouble and that’s going to roll to the wall. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Now it’s the DH James Outman. He’s already homered in this game. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Swinging a ground ball towards first, but foul. Swing and miss. Stuck him out. The high heat too much on that one. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. And up to the plate is Will Smith. Intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. Oh, and there’s a base open. So, it gives you options defensively to get an out. Freeman in the box now. Takes strike one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Outside low and one and one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Go ahead run at second here in the top half of inning number seven. That one outside. Ball three. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. And that one ripped to left and it stays fair. Flying around third is Betts. He will score. The Dodgers have the lead. Ro cut off now to the plate and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. They get a run on two hits. No errors and the man left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Dodgers two. The Rays won. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Anthony Bund. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Well, one-run game now up for Tampa Bay. Jake Mangum. That’s a strike. looking to get the tying run on base and a swing and a miss. One out. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Matt Th. First pitch, not close. One down, base is empty. and fouled off in the air left side. Confor, he’s got it. And there are two outs. The batter number six. Here’s the short stop at the plate. Taylor Walls. That one way inside. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office, even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter. Not able to get anything going. That clips the corner. swing and a pop off in foul ground and the inning is over. Rays held in check here and they trail it here two to one. Now pitching. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Mason Angler, pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one game Oscar Hernandez digs in now, one for three. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike late in the game. Everyone gets a little tighter. Way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. Foul ball there. Fights that one away. And the count remains 0 and2. And that’s down and away. Swaying and a ball popped in the air. Aranda should have this one. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. The center fielder number 44, Andy Pahes. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Andy Pahes, 0 for three in this one. Angler, 25 years old, and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2018. First offering misses badly for ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Kevin Kelly warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Baker also throwing and another ball. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Next one misses. Three balls, no strikes. Three balls. No strike. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. Run around at first with one gone. Michael Conforto steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And that is out of play. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken back as you jog back to the dugout. One- run game. One out, one on. Bouncer to second. La tosses to first. He’s out. And that is out number two. Now batting second base Miguel Miguel Rojas steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. And that traps in for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Mango makes the catch and that is that. So it’s no runs, no hits, no errors and one left on base. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Dodgers two. The Rays won back here at Tropicana Field ready for the bottom of the eighth. And now the center fielder number 14 Fast ball is outside. Action in the pen down there. Kirby Yates, the closer, is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Next pitch is outside. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another ground ball up the middle. Bats up with it and he’ll be safe at first. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question in the dirt. And an excellent job keeping it right there with the tying run on at first here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next pitch off the play, two balls, no strikes. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Yandi Diaz in the ADC circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Next offering is in for a strike. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in scoring position. lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. And the Dodgers will go to the bullpen. Anthony Ba won’t go any further and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching new arm out of the bullpen Alexis Diaz. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So the tying run in scoring position now. Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. Line drive. That’s a base hit around third. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single tie game here in the eight. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. First and second, no outs. Jonathan will hit next. And that’s in for a strike. That just misses. One ball, one strike. That one missing inside. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Next one is off the plate. Three and one. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter off, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike and the 3-1. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Conforto makes the grab. One down. The third baseman number 13, Junior. Junior Cabanero next to hit for the Rays. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play in the dirt. Blocked. Nice job behind the plate there. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. Misses outside and that’s ball two. No strike. Tap foul at the plate. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Brings it in. And there’s two down. The right fielder number 15, Josh Low. So, two down now. And here is Josh Low. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Just missed. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Two outs, fast for a strike. 1-1. Two on, two outs. Cut on and lifted in the air. Bet settles underneath it. Drops into the glove and that will end the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. Two-2 game. We go to the ninth. At the plate, Alex Freeland leading off for Los Angeles. The third baseman, Alex Freeland. Angler back to work. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Pete Fairbanks, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Swinging a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they have the lead. A massive home run. His first homer of the year. And now they’re out in front. It’s 32. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there he made him pay. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Mason Angler out of the game and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching Kevin Kelly into the game. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Back to the top of the order now. And next for LA Mookie Betts. Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box, got a pitch he liked, and he got it done. And up next for Los Angeles, James Outman. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? And there’s the strike. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Now the one popped up foul territory behind the play. Has room and he makes the catch. Now batting catcher Will Smith. Here’s the catcher Will Smith. First round pick out of Louisville in 2016. to third and that’s a fair ball. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. The batter, the first base, Freddy. Here is Freddy Freeman. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. that catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike one. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. takes it in for the out behind the runner. They’ve got it double off. And some late inning drama here in the ninth as this homer gives them the lead. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Kirby Yates. Now, this is an extremely confident pitcher. He loves the pressure. Actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable three-run save opportunity because that’s when he pitches his best. For the Reds, stepping in for the Rays. Jake Bangum. Three pitch strike out last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. One-run game. Bottom nine. And another ball. Late swing. Foul to the left. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Swinging at a highf fly ball. Well struck on the move. Racing back. caught just shy of the wall. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Now at the plate, Matt Thice. swing and a highf fly ball left field. Confor brings it in. Two down. The batter number six, short stop. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Now, it’s the shortstop. Taylor Walls. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. gets the slider in there for a strike. That’s off the inside corner. One and one. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. ball. Two balls, one strike. Trying to close out a one-run lead. And the home team trying to pull it out. Next pitch is outside. Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. Two down. Nobody on and that one fouled off. Raised down by a run. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Yates is just one strike away. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. The other way. He’ll squeeze it for the final out. And the Dodgers hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, you take a tie ball game into the ninth on the road, you know that you’ve got some work to do. You got to score, but then you’ve also got to get three outs in the bottom half of that inning. They did just that today. Very well played ball game. Get this win on the road. Everybody’s happy with the W.
