The Wishlist For The 2025-2026 Winnipeg Jets Is Short But SWEET
The countdown to the start of the 2025 2026 NHL season is underway and I’ve got a wish list of a couple of things I want from the season for the Winnipeg Jets. You’re Locked On Jets, your daily podcast on the Winnipeg Jets, part of the Locked Onet, your team every day. Tonight’s episode got a couple of fun things to talk about. I want to talk about a wish list that I have for this upcoming season because I think this year uh may appear to be in some ways a bit of a a wash season, right? Uh not one where I’m setting very high expectations, but I still think this year can be a win for the Jets as an organization if they play their cards right. So, I have a wish list and we also are starting to get hyped for the Olympics here coming up in just a couple of months. Uh, Shiffley and Morrisy have been invited to orientation and so, you know, it’s time to start getting hyped about international hockey again after an incredibly charged Four Nations tournament. We are really just a few months away when you think about it from what could be uh a truly legendary return for the NHL to the Olympics. And then lastly, I want to talk about the next great Winnipeg Jet. Who in our prospect pool could become that one young player that everyone starts to view as iconic years down the road. But first, let’s chat about our wish list. Right. So, this upcoming season, I I don’t want to say that I’m thinking uh it’s going to be a bad year because I don’t necessarily view it that way. Um I think the Jets will take a step back, which kind of just is inevitable. I mean, you went, you know, basically as far as you could with this group and won a President’s Trophy, so anything after that is likely to not be nearly as good. And, you know, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a bad year. But maybe the Jets fall into more of like a third seed uh or even like a really high wild card seed. And if they slip to a wild card, I don’t think that that necessarily means uh what it might mean in say the Eastern Conference because don’t forget like every team in the West basically had 100 points heading into the playoffs. So no matter what, whether you were a wild card or you were one of the top three seeds in your division, you were a really darn good team uh or a squad that maybe had a miraculous turnaround in the season, right? Look at the Blues. Look at how good they were in the playoffs and how hard they pushed the Jets all the way to the very last seconds of uh the game as as late as you possibly could. So um you know, this this is going to be an interesting year for the Jets. But if I have a wish list for them, I think my first thing is to get uh ice time for at least three to four rookies throughout the season. Doesn’t have to be simultaneously, not expecting it to be simultaneously. Uh the Jets never do that, and if they did, it would be a huge uh gamecher for really the thought process behind what’s going to happen with the team going forward. But I think throughout the season, you know, due to injuries and call-ups, I’d love to see at least three to four rookies get some NHL ice time, right? Maybe it’s just a couple of games as a reward for an amazing year with the Moose. Maybe it’s because somebody needs to fill in and you need a talent injection because maybe some of the veterans need a little bit of a break. Uh or maybe you have some sort of an injury crisis and this provides opportunities maybe for some of the youth that are a little bit closer than the others to making the jump. uh getting a call up and getting their taste of uh the first games of NHL action for their careers. So, um I think that would really be a good thing and I think for the Jets, you know, over the next several years, ELC’s might play a really vital role in what happens with this team. And yeah, you know, it it could come with some serious risk. uh you know, you may have to swallow some years where perhaps um the Jets competitively may be a little bit uh up and down with their regular season uh performances, but in my mind, it’s all to set you up for that next playoff run. And you know, on the related note, if I’m having a wish list item, uh I would like the Jets to win more than six playoff games. Um I think that was a really good improvement from previous playoff runs. Obviously, the last several years, we really haven’t seen the Jets win more than one game. That was pretty rough. But now the Jets have not only won more than one game, they won a series and they won it in the most exciting fashion possible. Uh the Dallas series was really unfortunate and I think the way that that particularly ended was especially heartbreaking for the guys. Um I legitimately had a a misty eye for Shifley. I I felt so horrible for him because um you know he was forced in a really unfortunate situation. not his fault at all, but he had to take the penalty. And I know that he felt uh completely responsible for it when No, it it just happens, right? You know, it kind of reminds me of when Samberg had the giveaway. I think it was against Vegas uh that ended up being the series losing goal, but it it’s not, you know, an individual moment that causes uh a team to lose, right? you just have to uh you know pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and with all the emotions that were probably going through his mind and the team’s mind at the time. Um you know it’s just one of those scenarios where you shouldn’t uh you shouldn’t take it for that face value and hopefully you know coming into this season is feeling better. Um, you know, I I you know, my thoughts are always with his family and with him. And so, uh, you know, this is a really good opportunity for the team to kind of pick itself back up and hopefully, you know, this year go on a deeper playoff run. I think last year we all thought maybe they could push through some of their issues and and really get far. And they did, you know, relatively speaking, they they did make uh some really good headway. And now it’s time to build on that success and uh truly go further uh than the last year. Now, I guess if I have one final major wish list item, uh it’s that the organization really goes out and acquires a big young piece. Um this is not something the Jets usually do. Not unless they’re forced to. And in my mind, this is one of those times where you should be forced to. But I think Winnipeg is probably going to be patient on that front. But, you know, I I think the days of where the team can just sort of sit back and wait for maybe a trade of disgruntled assets really is kind of over. Winnipeg needs to look at the market. They need to start to try and take some risks. Uh because, you know, as the league moves towards this higher revenue structure and the cap continues to go up, the Jets are going to have some issues with free agent recruiting. And you never should build your team through free agency to begin with, but it’s just going to take one more avenue out of Winnipeg’s hands. And so, I think the Jets really have a unique opportunity to look for guys who maybe on their own teams are looking for a change of scenery. maybe they feel they’re not really being viewed um in the right light and deserve more ice time. Come to Winnipeg, give the Jets a shot. If you give a young player who maybe doesn’t have as many attachments to where they are, uh maybe they’re not dealing with as many familial responsibilities and obligations and they’re willing to spend a year or two in Winnipeg to see if it’s, you know, the right place for them, maybe this is how you really start to build uh that that future core. I mean, look at Valardi, a guy who, you know, is used to California uh sun and and beaches and he has committed for six years to the Jets. Yeah, probably partly because he had some injury history and, you know, this is a really good opportunity to get guaranteed money, but it also just seems like he’s happy to be here. He plays on the top line. Uh the fans love him. He’s got his own goal song, the Macadena. So, you know, I I think that there’s some real draw, especially for a team that just won a President’s Trophy. So, you know, if you can bring in that big young piece, it not only accelerates Winnipeg’s retool, but it gives you an even bigger weapon for a potential playoff run this year. Uh, it can, you know, check off multiple boxes. And I think for the Jets, you know, take that swing, really prove to this fan base and to the players on the team that you are serious about winning a cup. Tabes is a big signing on on paper, but I think if you’re really talking about difference makers on the ice, you need to find somebody else. uh relying on him to do all of that I I don’t think is really fair and I think the Jets need to make sure that they set themselves up for present success and for the future. Would love to hear what else is on your your wish list. I mean, I’m sure you have quite a few things you’d like to see this season. Drop them below or in the comments section uh or at my uh mentions on Twitter and I will probably react to some of those and maybe even make a segment for a future episode about what you want on your Winnipeg Jets wish list for next season. But of course, amidst all of that, there is some good uh non-NHL news for the Jets. Shley and Morrisy have been invited to orientation uh for team Canada ahead of the Olympics. This is exciting, man. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Locked on Winnipeg Jets, uh part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Everyday, thank you so much for rejoining us on tonight’s show as we are chatting a little bit about, you know, some of the offseason stuff. Uh we just went through a wish list of what I hope to see for the Jets this coming season. And you know, we also have uh coming up this year um next calendar year, but this season the most exciting thing possible for all of you who are absolute international hockey dieards. It is the return of the Olympics. Been what 12 years now since uh we last saw the NHL at the Olympics. Uh it’s been many, many, many moons. And I think we’ve all been just waiting and foaming at the mouth for a truly elite international tournament where, you know, the best of the best go. And look, the last couple of Olympics where we’ve had uh maybe some players who didn’t quite make the cut or or survive as long in the NHL as possible got mixed in with um some standouts from overseas. That was really cool in its own right and it gave a lot of nations that usually didn’t have a real opportunity a chance to shine. But now we have the return of true elite best on best for the Olympics the way it should have been and I am extremely hyped. Um I I think that this is going to be a really fun tournament uh in Milan uh or sorry um is it Torino? Um uh but you know that that or Turin maybe. Um but either way I’m I’m just hyped for it. you know, the Winter Olympics uh is always one of the most exciting sporting events possible and you know, a February time where we’re going to have a couple of weeks to just sit down and watch it, I think is is super fun. Now, as far as the Jets are concerned, right, they’re going to have a couple of invites and Team Canada has already had their orientation going. Um, and Shiveley and Morsy have both been called up. Uh, I think they selected what around 42 players total uh to invite to this orientation to talk through it. And uh for the Jets, you know, this is uh this is a really exciting time. You know, I think if you’re looking at Shley and Morsy both going, not both uh will start for the team, but I do think Morsy probably has a really good shot at being one of the six or at least one of the seven uh big defenders to get chosen for this lineup. Um if you know, nothing else, he’ll probably at least be uh on the bench and in the rotation. But like you know the only reason he missed the four nations final was because it was terribly sick. Uh so this is really his chance to in my mind get a big trophy, get a big medal. I you know would have to think Canada are easily one of the favorites for gold. Um and you know Morrisy getting an Olympic medal. How freaking cool would that be? You know you had one of the best regular seasons the previous year. Uh he missed the four nations final. Still got the medal and award for it. you know, this is the real hardware, right? The Four Nations was great, but I think what really made that special was kind of the socopolitical context at the time, but this this is the real deal. And if Morsy can bite that metal and get that taste of gold in his mouth, I think it would be uh such a truly special experience. I think Shaley has a little bit of a more uh competitive track to get onto this team. Um, unfortunately, you know, the the team Canadian forwards are just so insanely deep that you’d probably be looking more at an injury situation before he would really get the nod. But if he does, and if he actually does play for team Canada, uh, I think, you know, that would be so sick as well. Um, and really just on a personal level, I, you know, selfishly, I want to really see him make it. You know, he’s had, uh, same way Morsy a couple of years ago really went through it. Shley, you know, had to deal with a very sudden loss this past year. And I think it would just be so inspiring and so wonderful if he got a chance to have, you know, a sort of uh tournament like this where, you know, the team comes out on top. It fills him with confidence. Um, and he’s just surrounded by positive vibes. You know, the Jets really rallied around him in that moment. The entire NHL community did. And it would just be cool if um you know rather than the memory of that playoff series against the Dallas Stars, he can go in and win gold with Team Canada. Uh I can’t even begin to describe what seeing both him and Morrisy uh sitting on the ice with a gold medal would even mean. And I say this as an American, right? I still would love to see uh the Jets guys come away with gold. Now that may be a little challenging because team USA is likely to be on the other side with Connor Hella. Um, obviously Team USA hasn’t made their camp selections or whatever yet. Uh, it’s still a ways out and like we all kind of know who on the Jets would probably uh probably qualify. The one guy that I’m going to be watching very closely um and I’m a little bit interested in is if Dylan Samberg maybe gets a nod. He didn’t really get much conversation last time uh for the Four Nations, but if Samberg hits the ground running this year and really has a very successful start to the season, does he get some conversation about joining Team USA, maybe as one of the reserves? Um, obviously Hella Buck and maybe Connor are are probably uh going to go to the Olympics. KFC, you know, we didn’t have as good of a Four Nations tournament and maybe that’s going to be held a little bit against him, but Hellbuck, I mean, it’s it’s Connor Hellbuk, right? he’ll probably go uh be their starter. Um you know, Dustin Wolf and and maybe some other guys are probably the only dudes that you’d really talk about uh other than like Otter uh maybe getting a real shot, but um Hely, right? It’s it’s Hel’s net to to really lose. And so uh you know, even though I’m American for a lot of reasons, I’m sure you can understand, I don’t know that I’ll really be rooting for this team specifically other than just rooting for some of the Jets players to have a good tournament, right? Um, but it would be great to see uh at least some of the Winnipeg Jets get themselves uh, you know, a gold medal, a nice thing to come back from, um, Italy and come back to Winnipeg with a ton of confidence, a renewed focus, and a a fresh mindset heading into uh, the backstretch of the season because like that March and April window could be really brutal on on Winnipeg. It could be a very tiring time. You’ll have a lot of guys dealing with fatigue who maybe didn’t get as much rest. Um, but you know, of course the rest of the guys who had the time off, hopefully they’ll be ready to pick them back up, help them through and get this team through the final stretch heading into the postseason because like I, you know, I absolutely think the Jets will make the playoffs. Uh, I really don’t worry about that too much. Um, but, you know, it’s going to be it’s going to be a fun time, man. I I’m looking forward to it. I would love to know what you think about this upcoming Olympics. Uh, I haven’t really seen as much conversation about it just yet because I think, you know, we’re still not even into fall yet. And, you know, February is still a ways off, but like, you know, in uh in in the blink of an eye, it’s going to be here. We’re going to be all hyped about international hockey. I can’t wait to stay up until like 2 a.m. watching uh, you know, these gold medal games and really some of the group stages, the knockouts, all that stuff. I’m looking forward to it, man. Uh, I just love the Winter Olympics in general. For me, it’s the best Olympics. I know the summer ones are usually some of the biggest, but when it comes to the winter sports, I’m just always partial to it. I love skiing. Uh I love a lot of the luge stuff and of course international ice hockey at, you know, the the wee hours of the morning. Is there anything truly better than that? The answer is no. Uh and I can’t wait for it. I hope you’re ready for it. Uh, I expect at least a couple of Winnipeg Jets to come home back uh to Winnipeg with a big nice shiny gold medal on their chest. Uh, love to hear your predictions for the tournament. Which nations do you think are going to surprise people? Um, if I have to take a sleeper nation, uh gosh, maybe the checks. Uh, Czecha, you know, they they’ve got some pretty good talent. Obviously, it’s going to be a real uphill battle. And look, you know, no one’s really going to touch the uh the Finlands, the Canada, the USA of the world, but you know, uh tournaments are always a fun time. You never quite know what’s going to happen. And during the groups, sometimes there are really big upsets. Um so keep an eye out for all of these nations that are maybe upstarts. Maybe they’ve got some intriguing talent that is yet to really hit their stride. The Swiss could be fun, too. So, uh I’m just ready for it, man. February is going to be so much fun. And you know, if the Jets are maybe having a little bit of an up and down season, a couple of weeks off to take a break from the Jets hockey side of things and a focus on the Olympics hockey could be just what the doctor ordered. But give me your tournament predictions below or at my social medias at age of living loco and at l winnipeg jets. Closing us out, I want to talk about, you know, the next great Winnipeg Jet. You know, where is the next Morrisy, the next Schiffley, the next Heluk? who could be uh from our prospect pool the guy that Winnipeg fans remember forever or have the Jets not brought that player in yet? Let’s chat about that coming right up. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Locked on Winnipeg Jets part of the Locked on Podcast Network your team every day every day. Thank you so much for rejoining us at tonight’s show. as uh I just want to close out with some quick thoughts on the next truly great Winnipeg Jet. And it it seems a little funny to phrase it this way, but when you really think about it, right, it’s been many years since we’ve had a player of a Morrisy or a Shively or a Hellibu’s caliber really join the team. Now, I think there are some intriguing candidates in Winnipeg’s prospect pool who could reach a a level that is uh at this height, but you know, it’s a really big long shot. I don’t know that there’s anyone that I point to immediately right now who I feel is at that level and is guaranteed to make it. Uh but I’ve got a couple of candidates who I think are are on really good tracks and could be very interesting, intriguing bets for the long term to eventually hit the levels that we’re really hoping for. If there’s a guy that I think right now is on the team and could become something special, uh it’s Cole Perfetti, right? Perfetti is the guy that I’ve really felt, you know, is is just waiting for that massive breakout season. You know, the year where everything really finally comes together and he becomes the truly elite player. This past year, I think a lot of his game really grew by leaps and bounds. He looked a lot more defensively mature. I think the forcheing game really grew. uh he was, you know, frankly a bit of a prick with the puck and off the puck. Uh and he sort of talked about wanting to be prickfetti as, you know, the personality archetype going forward. And he’s not like a nasty player, but he had a bit of an edge and it really helped him win battles in the corner, it helped sort of suit, you know, the the lack of foot speed where instead of being the guy who maybe skates past opponents, he just harasses the crap out of them until they turn the puck over. uh kind of like having a really annoying gnat swinging about your head and he would create offense and stuff out of that. The upcoming years, I really want to see him take that next step to be consistently the elite threat. I think that there’s a lot that he does right, but it still hasn’t consistently coalesed into just the most complete game ever. But I think he’s getting there. Um, and if there’s a guy that I think, you know, from the Jets could become a future star, Cole Perfetti is probably one of my favorite picks for this title, uh, I don’t know that he’ll ever reach some of the heights of, you know, a Shifley or those guys, but I think he could become a really household name for the Jets. If we’re looking elsewhere in the org, I’ve got two other candidates uh, that I think or or we’ll say I’ll say three candidates that I think uh, could potentially do this. We’ve talked about a lot of these guys before. Uh the first one is on defense and it’s Salammonson. Salammonson I I do think the world of and I think as far as Winnipeg’s prospects are concerned, he is near the top. Uh I think Joerger has now given him a run for the number one status, but Salow really is close. Like this is the guy that’s probably going to replace Dlo. I think he’s going to be Morrisy’s pairing mate of the future. And I am super excited for him. his growth in North America was so fast. Uh obviously he’s still got a lot to work on, but in terms of young players coming into uh you know, new ice and and certainly a smaller rink with a faster game, he immediately looked like he was ready to start playing North American hockey and he did it so fast. It’s been a hallmark of his career to play against players older than him and really thrive within the first couple of seasons. And so I’m just excited to see him really mature his defensive game to understand timing and spacing at this level and to continue his trajectory because I really feel like he could become a stealth star for the Jets and a player that you know maybe has like a rasmus Anderson sort of track. Uh I don’t know again if he’ll ever reach that elite level height, but if there’s a defender on this team that I think could, it’s probably him. He’s a dude that I I really do think is going to be special one day and I have a ton of time for him. If we’re looking at two other prospects, uh it’s Lambert and Joerger. And Joerger, I think, has the real potential to become, you know, an eventual two seed for the Jets. Uh, we’ll see how his offense in this first year or two really happens at the pro level, but he already plays such a defensive mature two-way game and his brain seems to work at a very elite level to where I really feel like it’s just getting the tools to match up. He already has a great shot. His skating is reasonably solid. Um, and you know, the passing is there. So, how will it be at the, you know, NHL and AHL level? I have a lot of time for him as a player who, you know, even if he doesn’t hit crazy offensive highs, is going to have the defensive maturity and mindset of an Adam Lowry. Now, Lowry will be a lot more physical, and I don’t think Joerger’s game is really the same. Um, but if you’re if we’re talking about players that I think people are going to love and who are going to be talking about wearing some sort of a letter for the Jets down the road, Joerger is easily a guy that I see being in that conversation. I think he’s going to be really hardworking. I think he’s going to be a very industrious player. I think he’ll probably be at least a 40 to 50 point guy each year, uh, if not more than that. And so, I’m really excited to see him at the NHL level. I think his time is actually sooner than many people seem to suspect. Uh, it’ll really just come down to the Jets making that decision rather than him, you know, being the one to force that move. So, um, I’m excited for him. I think he really has a very intriguing ceiling and one that maybe we haven’t fully uh seen yet. So, keep an eye out for Braden Joerger. Lambert is the wild card. You know, this kid is electric and he’s always thrived uh off of uh a lot of confidence and that elite skating of his, but so far, you know, it’s been up and down in terms of his prolevel performance. At least on the face of it, I think he’s done better than people really assume. And a lot of people look at this past year as a huge failure. Uh I think the Moose just being really bad held him back a lot. And so I think if you put him in the right supportive environment and you give him the right players to work with, you’re going to see why Lambert has, you know, just boundless confidence in himself um and really in his ability to create offense. And I think in camp and preseason, we’re going to see a kid with a real chip on his shoulder. uh he is the closest player we have to uh in Eers in the system and if he can finally start to find that traction at the pro level and really rip it up here with the moves or with the Jets uh I think he’s got the potential to be one of the most exciting talents the Jets have ever drafted. All the tools are mostly there. Um it’s just the decision-m and really the confidence that I think are are still works in progress with him. But I love his game. I think he’s a really exciting player and if there’s a guy that has the potential to hit 70 or 80 points uh with the tools alone, we’re talking about a Lambert, right? He is an effortless skater. He’s got a wicked shot. You know, he’s got great vision and passing. It’s just getting all of it to work together at the NHL level consistently that I think is going to be his next really big hurdle. But curious to know which players you think might be the next great Winnipeg Jet. Drop your thoughts and comments below or at my social medias at HL Living Loco and at LO_Winnipeg Jets. I think there’s a fair argument that that player maybe hasn’t been drafted yet or traded for yet, but you know, I’m always going to be a homer. You’re always going to hear me uh back some of our own prospects. So hopefully one of these kids really rises to the occasion and becomes that future cornerstone. But for tonight’s episode, that’s going to be all the time that we have. I thank you so much for listening and making Lockdown Jets your first listen of the day. every day. We’ll see you back here next week. So, have a great weekend. Have a great night. And as always, go Jets. Go.
