We’re opening up the mailbag to figure out how Joe Missoula will handle this new roster. Screaming like JT Carnis every game, every practice. Prime time white on the sideline raining J. How we started razor business. How we finish locked on Celtics P home of the winners. Hey there. It’s a mailbag Monday, which means questions get submitted to johncorales.combag. johncorales.combag. Submit your questions. Every Monday I am answering them until the regular season starts. Gets a little more sporadic during the regular season because there’s more to talk about and less time to just answer questions. But get your questions in there. Later on, we’ll get questions about Robert Williams, Jason Tatum’s recovery, Brad Stevens drafting, why the heck are we even talking about Ben Simmons, but oh, before I get to this, I want to shout out I was in the Bahamas recently. Shout out to Dr. Mendoza, uh, listener of the podcast. Very cool to meet Celtics fans and listeners of the podcast elsewhere on vacation. So, shout out Dr. Mendoza. Thanks for, uh, uh, stopping by and saying hi. It was a good time over the John Batist uh Jazz Club at Bahamar in in the Bahamas. If you have a chance to go, if you’re able to go, the Jeet Jazz Club. Awesome. All right, let’s get to the questions. First question here comes from Sophie, who asks, “In your opinion, how is Joe Missoula going to handle this entirely new roster situation? He’s an extremely competitive guy, but he will have to play multiple guys as new rotation pieces and deal with the inevitable losses. I can hardly imagine him doing that. This is the tough part for Joe this upcoming season. He has walked into uh a very ready-made championship contender at the beginning of his career as an NBA head coach. He’s won a championship already. Now he kind of like backs into the slow rebuild. It’s it’s this weird kind of regression of the team and hopefully for not too long, but ultimately the team will go into a rebuild and all of that stuff, but for now it’s this step backwards where you still have to play Jaylen and Derek and Payton and Sam and all of those guys. And obviously, if Anthony Simons is around, he’s going to have to play a lot. And if George Niang is is around, he’s probably going to play a bunch. But you also have to play Luca Garza a lot and deal with some of those uh mistakes. You’re trying to figure out who can kind of fill gaps and you can’t just be like, “Oh, he made a mistake. This is going to cost us the game. He’s got to go.” Like, you’re not playing for seating anymore. So, it’s it’s difficult to just play guys the same way you’ve been playing them. Uh, so how is he going to handle this? It’s going to have to be tough. But look, Joe, I think, understands that different situations call for different approaches. What does success mean this year? He’s very fond of saying success looks different on different nights. What does success look like for Boston? Yeah, I think his competitiveness is his greatest strength, but as people who know me know, I’m going to say your greatest strength is actually your greatest weakness. And that competitiveness I think is the thing that holds Joe back sometimes because he doesn’t he doesn’t I think take certain steps that um he thinks might jeopardize a win. doesn’t take certain steps where I think like in a game might be better in the short term or in the long term, but in the short term would would hurt the their chances at winning. So, I think there’s still some of that that he needs to kind of get past. And he’s going to want to win every game. I think now on August 4th, the the biggest I think obstacle for Joe is going to be this notion of I want to show everybody that they’re wrong, right? This rah rah, let’s just prove everybody wrong and try to win, I don’t know, 50 games, which would be, I think, a miracle. If they win 50 games, this roster is not equipped to win 50 games. And if they do, my god, what a celebration it’ll be. Is there a path to getting to 50 games, 50 wins, but also kind of not uh going down that developmental road that you’re supposed to go? You got to figure out Garza. You got to figure out my not. You got to figure out are these guys going to be good role players next to Jason Tatum as well. Do they have the capability of filling in these gaps when Tatum is back and and you’re 100% healthy? And if you have to figure that out because you have next off season to kind of put together a theoretical contender and have another last gasp for a year or two or three and try to contend for a championship at the tail end of the peak of Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum. So, he’s going to have to develop, evaluate, and give guys time to play through certain things. And that that’s going to be tough that he he’s going to have to handle this situation a lot differently than um than he’s handled other things. So, good luck, Joe. Like, this is this is this is what you get paid for, right? This is why you get get the big bucks. Uh, by the way, today’s show is brought to you by Monarch Money. Did I say this already? Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use code lockdown NBA at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. Uh, let’s get to the second question here from Doug. When will the Celtics make decisions on camp invites and final roster spots? I’m particularly curious about what their plans are regarding Charles Bassie, who I think should get a real shot to make the team. Nothing has gone out to Bassie yet. Uh, I would have thought that if he was going to get a camp invite, it would have happened by now. They um they have offered a bunch of the summer league guys there exhibit 10, exhibit 9, exhibit whatever contracts, the contracts that allow you to come into camp, compete for a spot, get cut, go to the G-League, all of that stuff. To my knowledge, Charles Bassie has not gotten that invitation yet. still possible. The reporting is that he is uh considering uh overseas offers but wants to stay in the United States, which you know, of course, of course, a fringe NBA guy who is getting offers from overseas is like, “Hey, before I go out this door, before I stamp this passport, are you sure Boston Celtics? Are you sure of somebody else? you don’t want me to stick around. But um I and look, when it comes to the Celtic center situation, yes, I think give Charles Bassie a shot. Give every big that’s available out there a shot. Just who knows? Just give them all a shot. See how they play in the preseason. Whittle it down and whatever. Um, I I just I don’t know what the situation is is with Bassie other than it’s when Brad was asked about it before summer league, his quote of, “Yeah, Charles is out here, you know, playing for what’s next.” That that didn’t seem like a guy that was interested in signing Bassie. He he he sounded like a guy that was uh doing Bassiey’s agent a favor. Uh and I think that’s where we have landed. I just I just don’t again I think it would be great to bring in every big possible. I’m also looking at what the Celtics have are are doing, how their actions, and I I just if if they had if they wanted him in camp, he would have been signed to a contract. This is a player who wants to sign a contract with the Celtics. And maybe they’re waiting, maybe they’re whatever, I don’t know. It’s possible. You have until you have up until camp, but you can sign anybody up until camp. There’s most of the most of the camp spots are filled. Final roster roster spots don’t have to be decided on until to answer the question directly until like camp is like over. Camp ends. You have your final cuts and that’s it. So, they have time. But as much as Bassie is, you know, front and center in a lot of people’s minds, I think the obvious statement is if the Celtics wanted him be, he’d be here because he wants to he wants to sign a contract with the Celtics. So, uh, I’m assuming that he’s probably just going to end up overseas. All right. when I come back. Why the hell are we talking about Ben Simmons and question about Brad Stevens drafting ability? That is coming up next. Today’s show is brought to you by Monarch Money. We’ve all had our financial difficulties in life. We’re talking about the NBA. I’m there on Fridays with Jake Madison. So, go check out that show. Uh as well as this one. So, make this one first and then that one second. Anther. Let’s get back to the questions. Uh, very simple question. This comes from a person who says, uh, I love these names that people submit. Every true fan ever. No, Ben Simmons. No. Please, God, no. Why are we even talking about this? I don’t want him. I think I’m I think I got that tone right. Indicative of many questions I got about Ben Simmons. Why? Look, one of the things I’m trying to do in this podcast is I am trying to get into somewhere close to the headsp space of what the Celtics are trying to do, what they’re trying to accomplish, so I can operate in what I think they’re trying to do. And it’s a little bit of a different thing than uh what I think they should do or shouldn’t do. like I have that element to it as well. But Brad is looking for weird uh you know discarded talent uh weird fits that who knows maybe a guy trying to reclaim his career. Ben Simmons fits into the supremely talented young guy, 29, athletic, trying to rebuild his career theoretically has, you know, he’s 610. He has a certain skill set that is untapped if and like this is the whole thing here. It’s like you go to a store, you go to whatever uh I don’t know, a Kohl’s or a Marshalls or and you pick up thing like well this could this could be something or like a yard sale even that’s probably been you pick go to a yard sale you pick up a thing you’re like well well if we did this and if we move this here and kind of hollowed that out we could use it as a this and that no that could that could work and it’s only $2 so we this could be this could be Great. Like that’s the mentality when it comes to Ben Simmons. Like am I in honestly saying like, “Oh, hey, Ben Simmons is available, we should go after.” No. But also, well, Ben Simmons if this, if that, if that, maybe there there is a if if if the more ifs you get to, the less likely it is. But if if if if you have yourself a cheap option that could fit something and like that that would work. So that’s why that’s why to the people who say like the vibes would be like yeah totally totally understand that. I’m not I’m not sitting here advocating for it like crazy. I’m just saying in this yard sale environment that’s a guy that we’re uh you know you throw it out there. like, hey, maybe it’s also August, you know, like you talk about things like this in August. Jason says, I’ve recently started to question Brad’s drafting a little bit. Totally understand expectations are low. Uh they have they don’t have a lot of time uh playing time, but looking at Kyle Philipowski, who’s a stretch big from Duke, that would have been a perfect piece for the future. I definitely have questions. Why did they pass on him? So this is I think for Jason this is a guy that you probably I assume you liked before. Um Philip Philipski is you know it’s all right. He’s all right. Who knows what he’s going to be. He’s had you know he’s played for one year in Utah. Um has looked good in moments, not so good in others. Um why did they pass on him? Number one, to answer that question directly, first of all, I don’t think they anticipated Luke Cornett blossoming the way Luke Corett blossomed. Uh they didn’t expect Chris Sporzingis to be this unavailable, right? Uh they didn’t anticipate Jason Tatum’s injury, which contributed to Al Horford ultimately at at some point leaving. There’s a lot of unanticipated things. So they drafted Baylor Shyman because like well you need shooting around Tatum and Brown and so the the wing shooter kind of guy is the guy that they decided to go for. The Celtics could have drafted Philipski and he could have languished in Maine. He could have blossomed in Maine. Who knows? Uh but just because a guy has looked okay or better whatever you think in some in some other system doesn’t mean he would have worked in Boston and like you said the Celtics didn’t have a lot of playing time for a guy like that. U so he wouldn’t have he would have sat there he would have been in the G-League all year and so it would have been a different conversation. So, I don’t think the the the criticisms of Brad Stevens drafting are are valid. I think that Brad has uh first of all, he hasn’t had a not even like a middle round like he’s had late end of the first round picks. So, give him give him a little bit of time to find some like give Shyman a little time to develop. Shyman could be a hit. You know, Ugo Gonzalez could be a hit. Like, you don’t I I like the kid. So, we’re not anywhere close. Not anywhere close to judging Brad Stevens drafting ability. Big Zer asks, “How reasonably excited should we be to see Jason Tatum out and about without a boot on? Is this a normal time frame for this injury, Dr. Carales?” Well, yes. in my experienced medical opinion. Uh first of all, he is in the boot some days, he is out of the boot some days. Uh a scout that was at the Chris Paul uh Jordan elite camp in Las Vegas recently talked to Steve Bullet at heavy.com. saw Jason Tatum out of the boot uh at the camp kind of walking around coaching and saying basically he said I’ve seen guys recovering from this type of injury before and he looks ahead of the game so that’s good. I think that he’s probably healing better than most people in this situation, which listen, my expectation is that he is going to heal faster than most guys who suffer this injury because, again, I’ll repeat myself, his uh speed at which he had the surgery, he the next morning he was already in in surgery faster than basically anybody who has this injury. Uh the type of injury that speed bridge uh unique new thing it’s it’s a designed to recover faster. He is in his absolute athletic prime. So you normally guys like that are also going to uh heal faster and so I think he will heal faster will he be ready sooner that’s a different conversation the injury itself can heal the Achilles tendon can reconnect scar all of that can heal over and the Achilles can be 100% physically ready, but then the body has to be built back up. Mentally, you have to be ready again. You have to get your cardio back. You have to trust your body again. All of that stuff. The healing process is only part of the recovery and return process. So, I do think that he can heal more quickly than most people who have this injury. Now, will he be ready faster? I think there’s a a very linear way of thinking of saying, well, if you heal faster, you’ll be ready faster. And it’s totally possible. I still think he can return with NBA games left on the schedule, which would be great because then you can get to some NBA action and that would be part of the recovery. It’s not even about getting to the playoffs and oo maybe they can make a run or no just I’d love to see him get out there and start getting some NBA minutes so we can start regaining the trust in his body, regaining the the explosiveness and all of that stuff. A month or two of NBA basketball and then season’s over, head into the off season would be fantastic, fantastic for him as part of his recovery and getting back to his normal self. I I really don’t want the first NBA action for him to be the following October. So, uh, we’ll get back here with questions about Namish Kada, Robert Williams, uh, and a lot of, uh, other questions, including a beatwriter cage match. We’ll do that next. Uh John asks, “What do you hope to see from Nimish Kada in Eurobasket?” Uh short answer is anything. Anything at all in Euro Basket. Um I’m curious to see how he performs. I I I just want to see him play well. I’m not even looking for anything specific and it might feel like a copout answer, but seriously, I am not the highest on Mish Kada. I I if if I think if Kada is your center of your of the future, it’s not the best future. Uh but look, he’s still young enough to prove me wrong. And so I want to see in Euro Basket, I want to see him just play well. Uh, yeah. I’m just going to leave it at that. I I just want to see him do anything at all. Tom says, “If Time Lord is brought is bought out by Portland, should the Celtics bring him back? Does acquiring a non-shooting center even make sense in the current system?” Well, they just lost a very important non-shooting center in Luke Cornette. So, yeah, I would listen. I would love Robert Williams back in the Celtics. I don’t care if he doesn’t even play. I just want Rob back. I want an interesting quote machine. And like he is just the coolest dude. All positive. Um he’s also just a really good basketball player. I hate the injury stuff and everybody acknowledges the injury stuff. Man, I just want that dude back and playing basketball and talking to us. It would be so great. Now, does it make sense? Are they going to give him a spot? I first of all, I don’t even know if he’s going to get bought out. Um, but if he does, if he’s available, I don’t know. I I I honestly don’t know that that that’s going to be the best use of their money. I think because of the injuries and they all they know exactly what he’s um what he’s prone to suffer. So, I’d love him back. The team does not. I mean, the team loves them, but I just don’t think that that’s the direction they they want to go. Troy says, “All the talk of 15man roster spot limits. Do teams with players who have year-long injuries like Tatum and Hallebertton get a free roster spot through the injured player exception?” No, they do not. uh the rosters were expanded so teams didn’t have to make active inactive, right? Like baseball, you can put somebody on a DL and that opens up a spot. You can call somebody up. Can’t do that in the NBA. You’re just on the roster. Now, you you have to there are inactives on the roster, but what I’m saying is you can’t deactivate Tatum and open up a roster spot to fill that. Uh you do not get that with the injured player exception. You have to naturally have one of your 15 roster spots open and you get a certain amount of money to sign a player. uh to theoretically take that player’s spot. So, um which the Celtics aren’t going to do. Even if they might apply for it, they might get it. Uh but I don’t even think they’re going to use it. James says, “Okay, now two fun questions to end this.” James says, asks, “If you could create a starting five of your favorite non Celtics of all time, who are you going with?” So, it’s a starting five. Point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, center. I’m going to cheat on the point guard because I’m going to say Gary Payeyton, who was a Celtic, but I think we can all agree Seattle SuperSonics Gary Payton is a a different animal. um that I don’t even know like if he was um I what he played one season with Boston. Yeah, one season with Boston. So that doesn’t even that I I didn’t even count that. 36 years old with Boston. Seattle Sonics Gary Payton with Shan Kemp. Absolutely one of my favorite teams of all time. That team with Deadlift Shrimp. Um, oh god, was it uh um drawing blanks on some of these guys’ names, but that that team just I cannot believe they didn’t win a championship. That Gary Payeyton was so much fun. The glove two-way player just unbelievable. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Loved him. My shooting guard Clyde Drexler. I loved Clyde Drexler in Portland. Oh my god, Portland. Those Portland teams were so good, man. I loved watching Clyde. So, like Clyde was so underrated playing in Portland when Michael Jordan was dominating. Like remember Clyde was the reason why Portland didn’t draft Michael Jordan, right? They were like, “We already got a a a shooting guard, so we’re not going to take Jordan.” Now, we all know that you should have taken Jordan, but he’s the reason why they did, but I loved him in Portland. Again, cannot believe that that team didn’t win uh a championship. My small forward, if anybody knows me at all, you know what I’m going to say here. Grant Hill, my absolute favorite basketball player of all time, nonB Boston edition. Grant Hill. I’ve said this on Twitter. I’ve said this everywhere. People can hate me for it, but Grant Hill, if he never got injured, if his ankles never gave way, we would be talking about hm Michael Jordan or Grant Hill. Like it would have been or like when LeBron came in and be like, “Well, who’s the best of all time?” Jordan Grant Hill or LeBron like I think that highly of Grant Hill. He was so incredible. He was so damn good. And he This is how good he was. If there are two teams that I hate, just viscerally hate in my entire just from my childhood growing just this deep seat. It’s Duke and the Detroit Pistons. You can throw the 76ers in there, too, but Duke and Detroit. And he played for both. And I still absolutely freaking love that guy. You know how good you have to be to transcend Duke hate and Detroit hate? That’s how good Grant Hill was. So good. I just absolutely my favorite player of all time. Non Boston edition. Power forward Tim Duncan. obvious. I think um especially since the other I think option like okay my other option at power forward would be Charles Barkley. H I did love Charles Barkley but Tim was such a winner. I don’t know toss up but I wrote down Tim Duncan. I was going to say Tim Duncan, but Charles Barkley, Charles was something. Uh, Hakeiman, my favorite non Celtic center of all time. Dream was so good, man. Dream, that image of Dream just faking David Robinson. Boop. Boop. Left. Nope. Up and under. Under again. Under again. Like, oh my god, that dude. Dream was absolutely perfect. Just perfect. And I don’t know, somehow still underrated. He’s in the conversation of greatest centers of all time and still somehow underrated. So, Gary Payton, Clyde Drexler, Grant Hill, Tim Duncan, and Keem Elijah. Oh, baby. That is a team. That is a squad. Final question. This will be quick. Rob asks, “All the Celtics beat writers go into a cage. Who’s the last person standing?” That’s me. That is the obvious answer. And yeah, of course. Of course, it’s me. I mean, I’m 52, so there’s a couple of young guys out there, but the young guys are small. I’m big. I’m sorry. I’m 6’5. I’m 260. I have martial arts training. No one no one is leaving that cage other than me. I’m the first one out. I’m stepping over people. So that’s the answer. Saved that for last. Thanks everybody for the questions, the comments, all of that stuff. I really en do enjoy the mailbags. Questions go to johncarales.combag. johncares.combag. Obviously, you can answer you can ask any question and I try to answer I save the fun questions for the end. So, uh that’s that’s the formula. Uh back on Wednesday with Tom Westerhome with a we’ll see we’ll we’ll gather some of the uh the topics, some of the things that are going on around the Celtics. We’ll talk about that Wednesday. Friday is a flashc card Friday similar to mailbags except we don’t know the questions ahead of time. I can’t think about the answers. It’s like a freestyle. It’s off the top of our head. “Anything..” best answer to that Neemias Queta question. 🤣😆Thank you John ☘️🔒
☘️☘️👊
Joe's first real test as HC as he won't have his superstar JT. And not having the 2023-24 Holiday and Porzingis firepower.
League is going in the cutting direction. A lot of top teams last year, (cavs, pacers, thunder) cut a lot, brad loves the idea of following the trend, joe would be wise to listen to him
Grant Hill was so damn good before the injuries omg
Ben would be the third best player on the celtics
